Corey Cushing Crowned World's Greatest Horseman Champion
After 10 thrilling days of nonstop reined cow horse action, the National Reined Cow Horse Association’s Celebration of Champions concluded on Saturday, February 23, from Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas. After four grueling phases of the DT Horses and Hashtags World’s Greatest Horseman, it was Corey Cushing riding Sonita Lena Rey (Dual Rey x Sonita Lena Chick) who emerged victorious in front of a sell-out, standingroom-only crowd. Cushing won a plethora of first-rate awards and a check for $40,000 thanks to Finals scores of 212 out of the herd, 217 in the reined work, 223 in the steer stopping and 225 on the cow. Cushing and Sonita Lena Rey, who is owned by Sheri Jamieson and was bred by Jim Holmes, achieved the highest scores of the steer stopping and fence work portions of the Finals. The team fought their way up from the last qualifying hole into the Finals in order to snag the win. This marks Cushing’s second World’s Greatest Horseman title. Boyd Rice riding Royal Smart Fletch (Royal Fletch x Little Smart Ginger) took an early lead with a spectacular 222 in the cutting, which was held in Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum. Next came the reined work in the John Justin Arena where it was eventual reserve champions Rubys Radar (One Time Pepto x Ruby Bagonia) owned by C Ranches, Inc., and ridden by Zane Davis who took the round win with a 224. 2019 World's Greatest Horse Champion Interview Texas Lighting World’s Greatest Youth Horseman In addition to all the excitement of the DT Horses and Hashtags World’s Greatest Horseman, the Texas Lighting World’s Greatest Youth Horseman featured promising young riders competing on the big stage alongside their idols. A finals for the top six youth riders was held immediately following the World’s Greatest Horseman Steer Stopping to
Corey Cushing Guides Sonita Lena Rey to the DT Horses and Hashtags World’s Greatest Horseman Championship determined the champion. Trevor Hale rode Survive These Lips (CD Survivor x Lipschic) to a 723-point composite to earn the inaugural Texas Lighting World’s Greatest Youth Horseman title and $2,430. Hale had high praise for “Lippy,” a 2008 mare that has been his partner for the past four years. “I got her through Brad Lund and Brad and Todd Crawford have helped me a lot with her,” said Hale. “I’ve been preparing for a while, we started preparing ever since we learned we could enter it. I’ve had a lot of good help along the way. For this event I had to just work on all the parts—the steer stopping, cutting, down the fence and the reined work. I just tried to get through all the events
without any mistakes. We came in here in the cow work and I was a little behind and I knew I needed to come in and lay down the best run that I could, and luckily it all worked out.” 2019 World's Greatest Youth Horseman Championship Interview National High School Rodeo Challenge As part of the NRCHA’s commitment to the youth of the reined cow horse industry, the National High School Rodeo Challenge also took place today. The invitation-only competition featured contestants who placed among the top 20 at the 2018 National High School Finals Rodeo Reined Cow Horse competition. Addison Coutts rode Peppys Please (Chic Please x

In the Limited Division it was Brenna Braddock riding for West Texas to earn 16 points. The Novice Division champion was Monty Sperry who earned 15 points for North Central Texas College. North Central Texas College earned the Overall Team Championship with 46 points accrued by team members Joshua C. Briggs, Rieta May Dufurrena, and Monty Sperry.

How This Trailblazing Navajo Cowboy Made A look at the life of Derrick Begay, one of the first Navajo cowboys to qualify for pro rodeo’s national finals. Growing up on a Navajo reservation in rural Arizona, Derrick Begay always dreamt of making it as a professional cowboy. But the idea of someone from his tribe hitting the big time seemed out of reach—though folks, including his own father, had tried to do it, no Navajo had ever managed to. After years of hard work, Begay finally succeeded, becoming one of the first Navajo cowboys to qualify for the national

finals. He’s gone on to compete there six more times. That’s made him a hero in his hometown of Seba Dalkai, and in the Navajo Nation as a whole, where he’s become an inspiration to young cowboys who want to break into the pro rodeo circuit just like he did. In this Yeti Presents Film, made in partnership with VICE Sports, Begay talks about his trailblazing career in rodeo, and we hear from his biggest supporters—from his family to his fellow pro cowboys—about his impact on the Navajo Nation and the sport at large.

CREED BOTTS
This is the story and life of a true gentleman…kind, caring, and faithful… a man of few words- Delman Creed Botts, born May 15, 1952, to Delmer Brock Botts and Gloria Isobelle Jesson in Paradise, Calif. In Paradise, his father was a sawyer, and his mother was a homemaker. When Creed was about 12, the family moved to Cottonwood, Calif., where he graduated from high school. While in Cottonwood, Creed worked with a butcher and eventually became a journeyman butcher. In the early ‘70s he moved to Reno, Nev., where he worked for a meat wholesaler. It was there, that he met Donald Baldwin, a grocer who was opening a wholesale meat company and he asked Creed to come and work for him. He soon became best friends with Don’s son, Monty Baldwin who introduced his little sister, Berva Baldwin, to Creed. Creed married the love of his life, Berva in 1977 and a few years later they were blessed with the birth of their daughter Sally Jean Botts Drescher. The family moved to Phoenix in 1980 so that Creed could pursue a career training race horses owned by his father-in-law Don Baldwin. In 1982 they welcomed their son, Donald Brock Botts and also bought a ranch in Wickenburg, and moved there soon after. Creed raced horses all over the United States and became lead trainer at Turf Paradise in Phoenix. Creed and Berva opened Double D Western World, Arizona’s largest tack and feed store in 1987. The couple successfully ran the store for more than 30 years until selling it in July of 2018. An avid roper from the start, he won his first buckle at the age of 5, with his dad as his partner. He never lost his love for roping and racehorses or living the true western way that he was raised. This is one of the reasons why Creed loved Wickenburg so much. He recently expressed that he loved the people of Wickenburg who help to keep Wickenburg’s western heritage alive. He loved his family fiercely and would drop everything to stop and help wherever he was needed. In fact, family or not, he would go out of his way to help anyone who needed it. Creed had a special gift of making everyone feel like they were family. Creed will be lovingly remembered by his loving wife, Berva; daughter and son-in-law Sally and Scott Drescher; son Brock Botts; grandchildren, Evan, Luke, Lola, Margo, and Francis; sisters O’lene Kofoid, and Roxy Jo (Sam) Williams. Creed will also be lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews and extended family and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Aarrol Dean; and his grandson Duke Warren Drescher. Family suggests memorial contributions be made to Elks Lodge charities "Roper's Night Out" in care of Diane Crosthwaite. 12

A Ridiculous Prediction Comes True In 1848, James Collins Brewster, 24, had visions of a promised land—The Land of Bashan—and his passionate message gathered adherents wherever he spoke: “Fear not, for I am with you. I will bring your people from the east and gather you into the west. The wilderness and the wasteland shall fall away and the desert will rejoice and blossom as the rose.” And where was this so-called Land of Bashan located? At the confluence of the Gila and Colorado Rivers, today known as Yuma, Arizona. Never mind that the area rarely gets more than 3.5 inches of rain a year, is mostly sand dunes and harsh desert with daytime temperatures reaching triple digits every day for months on end. Oh, and never mind that James Collins Brewster had never been to Yuma Crossing and spoke of the banks of the river being lined with pine trees. His bizarre prediction led to the tragic deaths of six members of the Oatman family who were on their way to this promised land when they were brutally attacked by a Yavapai raiding party. When other members of the Brewster Wagon Train made it to Land of Bashan, they were bitterly disappointed and pushed on to the California coast.

Yuma Crossing For eons, Yuma Crossing was as desolate as it comes, with sand dunes in every direction. In 1902, thanks to Teddy Roosevelt and the newly minted Bureau of Reclamation The Yuma Project, diverted Colorado River water to irrigate more than 58,000 acres along the river, all the way to the Mexican border. The water turned the harsh desert into a lush tableland supporting 275 farms and 90,000 residents. Farming year round, today these farms produce $196 million in crops every year. The Yuma Chamber of Commerce claims that 90% of all wintertime leafy vegetables in the United States come from this area—an area once prophesied as the Land of Bashan.
“The wilderness and the wasteland shall fall away and the desert will rejoice and blossom as the rose.”
New advances in equipment (above) helped build canals on the Yuma Project.
—James Collins Brewster
Miracle on the Desert Brewster himself faded from history and no one knows what happened to him, but here’s the crazy part: his ridiculous prediction was only off by fifty years. The Brewsterites who gave up on him probably didn’t live long enough to see the miracle on the desert. But, it’s a sobering reminder for all of us to be a little less judgemental when we hear ridiculous predictions.
Only 25 copies of this pitch synopsis were printed and they are not for sale, but you could have predicted that.

Go Behind the Scenes of 'Yellowstone' Season 2 With the Cast THE CAST GATHERS FOR A GROUP SHOOT.
Yellowstone was one of TV's biggest summer hits last year, and the crime/family drama is returning for a second season later in 2019. The series, created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, is helmed by Oscar- and Emmy-winner Kevin Costner. He plays John Dutton, the patriarch of a rich, powerful and dysfunctional family of ranchers. John owns the largest largest contiguous ranch in the United States and battles politicians, police, and corrupt business people every day. His influence comes at a cost, though — the adult Dutton children are rebellious, angry, and constantly fighting with each other. Production on the second season recently wrapped and will contain 10 episodes. While onset, some of cast posted behind-thescenes photos of their time out west filming. 32

ARENA ROCK REMOVAL IN ARIZONA About Rock Relief
HOW IT WORKS
We’ll pull into your existing arena and allow Rockyln to do her thing…Pick up rocks. With her pristine design, she is able to pick up a variety of rock sizes, as small as 3/8 going up to 6 inches deep of the surface sifting through without removing your footing.
Here at Rock Relief, we pride ourselves for having the one and ONLY Rock Relief machine. Unlike “those other companies” that claim to have an arena rock removal machine, Rocklyn is designed to remove rock specifically from arenas. She is the Queen of the arena. This is why we have a superb reputation.
Rocklyn employs a sifting technology used to lift the existing footing from your arena on to a special/secret screen. The screen then sifts the unwanted rock from the arena, while the footing returns to the arena, and the remaining debris is deposited in the bucket.
Meet Rocklyn... She’s a badass arena rock removal machine designed with few moving parts and extremely durable components.
We’ll gather the rock and neatly pile it up for easy removal. She’s built of steel to ensure durability and consistency.

Tim & Matt Gannon - Mini Horses Conquering Obstacles - Overcoming Limitations
The Gannon Family have been longtime strong supporters of the Horse World in Arizona. Going back many, many years ago to when their mother Rita built Santa Rita stables at Tatum and Bell Road. Home to many great trainers over the years like Alice Sarno, the property featured a full sized Eventing jump course and was home to many shows and events. Tim and Matt were always at the stable
and it was their second home. Years later Santa Rita would become a housing development, but the Gannon brothers are still involved with horses, only now they are a bit smaller than warmbloods. Both Gannon brothers will show in COOL (conquer obstacles overcoming limits) Halter and the Open Color classes at the Arizona Miniature Horse
March Festival at WestWorld on March 28th - 31st, 2019. AE American Anthem AKA “Ace” will also be shown in driving by trainer Dennis McCoy. The Gannon Brothers hope to be showing in driving later this year. Tim & Matt contacted Lynn Bateman of Arabian Echo Miniatures looking for someone to mentor them into the mini horse world in January 2019. Lynn

and the brothers are working on their halter showing skills and basic driving training with the goal of showing at every event they can schedule. Get over to the Mini Horse Festival and see these these lil horses show like the big boys, and take a moment and stop and visit with Tim, Matt and Lynn to learn more about this great NEW program. If you have anyone you know that could enjoy this program, or would like to mentor or volunteer, Lynn can help you get started. COOL Classes are recommended to be included in all shows to encourage physically and mentally challenged individuals to expand their enjoyment of ponies and miniature horses by offering the opportunity to participate at pointed shows. At least one Halter, Showmanship and Driving Class must be included in the Area and National Shows. It is recommended that shows not charge an entry fee for the COOL classes and that the classes may be split for Youth and Adult. Of course, Safety First! All modifications must be designed to maximize safety in the show ring.
Cowgirl Up! turns the spotlight squarely on women’s voices and perspectives, serving up a new, deeper understanding of the American West. More than an exhibition, CU! is a crossroads where artists, collectors, and enthusiasts come together to explore what it means to be a Western artist. During opening weekend in late March, Frontier Street transforms into a tented venue for catered dinners, dancing, live auctions and artists’ quick draw. Your purchase of original artworks supports the endeavours of women artists working today and of the Desert Caballeros Western Museum. Art can be purchased throughout the run of the exhibition at the Museum or online at westernmuseum.org.

Ralph Lauren
50 Years of Equestrian Style
Ralph Lauren commemorated its 50th anniversary late last year with a stunning event set against New York’s famous landmark, Central Park’s Bethesda Terrace. The 50th Anniversary Collection articulated Lauren’s singular vision of American designs and exemplified those themes and inspirations throughout his career. “For my 50th anniversary, I wanted to create and share a runway experience that was deeply personal and a summation of the style I always believed in: personal, authentic, and forever in a place so quintessentially New York and so special to me—Central Park,” he said. In tandem, he published a visually captivating 50th anniversary book, showcasing iconic imagery from the world of Ralph Lauren. “Every one of the

So I give them back to you. That’s what I do.” Over the past 50 years, Lauren has celebrated the iconography of America and defined American style, translating his vision and inspiration into one of the world’s most widely recognized brands. The sartorial appeal of his equestrian-inspired apparel within the equestrian world has been longstanding. Lauren’s homage to the palettes and textures of the American West, and his nods to the tweeds and hunt coats of the English countryside, along with the classic breeches and jackets prevalent in the hunter ring, continue to resonate with those looking for timeless allure. Over the last five years, the Ralph Lauren brand has consistently been nominated to and won Equestrian Living’s annual Gold List favorite equestrian-inspired apparel and leather accessories categories. In 1971, the brand introduced the Polo player logo and followed a year later with the debut of the iconic polo shirt, a mainstay in any equestrian’s wardrobe and a signature choice for training. Ralph Lauren continued to integrate facets of the equestrian world into his collections. In 1978 the brand launched his Western wear for men and women, his first collection inspired by the American West. Three years later, he introduced the Santa Fe collection, and in 1985 the Equestrian Collection for women, inspired by the romance of traditional riding apparel, debuted.

OMEPRAZOLE by Denise Steffanus
Can Have Negative Side Effects In Humans; Should Horse Owners Be Worried?
If you watch television, no doubt you’ve seen commercials by law groups warning users about the dangers of proton pump inhibitors in humans. Proton pump inhibitors are prescribed for the prevention and treatment of acid-reflux disease and ulcers. They work by blocking the production of stomach acid and are marketed under the brand names Prilosec, Nexium, and Prevacid. Human studies link chronic use of proton pump inhibitors to kidney disease, fracture risk, and anemia.
Included in this classification of drugs is omeprazole, a common medication also used in horses to prevent and treat gastric ulcers. Some equine nutritionists and horsemen are concerned that omeprazole may hold the same dangers for horses. No equine studies investigating these concerns have been published, so nutritionists can only speculate how suppression of stomach acid by omeprazole might be affecting horses. Dr. Juliet Getty of Getty Equine Nutrition in Lewisville, Texas, believes horsemen’s concerns are reasonable because what happens in a horse’s stomach is not that different from human digestion. “What happens in humans is that these medications not only reduce protein digestion, but they also inhibit the absorption of key minerals and vitamins, such as magnesium, calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12,” Getty said. Protein is essential for muscle development and repair, which is crucial in performance horses. Getty explained that stomach acid activates pepsin, the enzyme that breaks apart proteins into smaller chains of amino acids. Protein digestion then can be completed by other enzymes within the small intestine, down to individual amino acids that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. She described how omeprazole affects protein digestion in humans. “If the long amino acid chain is not broken apart initially in the stomach by pepsin, which would be inhibited by omeprazole, then that protein would not be adequately digested,” she said. “It is possible that a protein deficiency could ultimately develop, but you would definitely see a compromised protein status.” Magnesium is important for muscle function, a healthy nervous system, sound bones, and healthy kidneys. Calcium’s primary role is to build strong bones and teeth. Constant bone turnover that occurs in racehorses creates a high demand for calcium. The mineral also helps muscles to contract and relax and nerves to send and receive signals. In the vascular system, calcium is essential for blood clotting and a steady heartbeat.
Digestibility Trial
Dr. Joe Pagan, president of Kentucky Equine Research, similarly was concerned how omeprazole’s suppression of digestive acid in the horse’s stomach affects digestion. In particular, he wanted to determine if omeprazole interfered with the digestibility of a calcium supplement KER devel52
oped to increase bone density. The supplement utilizes a marine-derived calcium called BMC, which is more digestible than the limestone powder (calcium carbonate) typically used as a calcium source in horse feeds. Pagan conducted a digestion trial with four idle Thoroughbreds that evaluated how well the horses were able to digest two sources of calcium (BMC and limestone) with and without two weeks of omeprazole administration at the recommended therapeutic dose (4 mg/kg per day). “The source of calcium and the omeprazole both significantly affected calcium digestibility,” Pagan said. He found the calcium in BMC was more digestible than limestone, but that omeprazole administration decreased the digestibility of both sources of calcium. Omeprazole administration decreased calcium digestibility by 20 percent in the limestone-supplemented diet, while the calcium in the BMC-supplemented diet was 15 percent less digestible. Interestingly, omeprazole had no effect on any other nutrient that the study measured, except calcium. It did not adversely affect the digestibility of magnesium, iron, protein, fat, or fiber. However, Pagan did find that serum gastrin was doubled in the horses on omeprazole. Gastrin is a hormone produced by the stomach to stimulate gastric-acid secretion. “In studies with other animals and humans, increased gastrin has also led to increases in parathyroid hormone [PTH] production, and there was a trend toward increased PTH in this study,” Pagan said. “PTH causes the body to pull calcium from the skeleton to maintain blood calcium, which is essential to support muscle and nervous function. Chronically elevated PTH may lead to osteoporosis, or holes in the bone that reduce bone strength and mass. Although this study did not directly assess bone metabolism, Pagan called this result a potential smoking gun. “Now, this study only included four horses, and the length of omeprazole administration was just two weeks,” he said. “At this point I don’t have any definitive proof that omeprazole affects bone, but I think it would be worth conducting additional studies to determine if longer-term administration of omeprazole would have an effect on PTH production that might have an effect on bone.” Pagan said the results of KER’s digestibility study indicate further research into the effects of omeprazole on calcium digestibility are needed. “This study should not be an alarm that everyone should stop using omeprazole,” he said. “It doesn’t mean that at all. It means that if you’re using omeprazole, you probably should pay closer attention to the horse’s calcium intake and make sure it is adequate, and preferably use available forms of calcium. “From our previous studies of furosemide—Lasix—we found that it increases urinary calcium excretion. So if you have a horse that is on omeprazole and Lasix, for sure you need to take a pretty close look and make sure you are giving them enough calcium in their diet.”

by Ed Golden/Santa Anita Victor Espinoza is scheduled to resume his career after an absence of almost seven months when he rides Gallantly Streaming for trainer John Sadler on Monday at Santa Anita Park. The 46-year-old Hall of Fame member suffered a fractured vertebra in his neck and a shoulder and arm stinger in a training mishap at Del Mar last July 22. “It's been a long time coming and it feels like forever,” said his agent, Brian Beach, who also represents Victor's nephew, top apprentice Asa Espinoza. “It wasn't like we were looking for a particular race or a particular horse (for his comeback). “The right opportunity came along and hopefully we can build from here.” A three-time Kentucky Derby

Victor Espinoza winner, Espinoza's popularity went mainstream after winning the Triple Crown on American Pharoah in 2015, prior to a near miss on two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome in 2014. Those achievements ultimately led to network TV appearances on the David Letterman Show and Dancing With The Stars, but now it's back to Victor's primary vocation, riding horses.

Patrick Flaherty of Flaherty Performance Horses Born and raised in Eastern Washington, Patrick didn’t stand much of a chance at a life without horses. With a mom as a doctor and a dad who ran a packing business, Patrick’s first babysitter was a 16 hand black mare. “My dad would put me on Shamrock and let her take me around while he did the chores.” Patrick has not gotten off a horse since he could sit up. He showed as a youth and began seeking a higher level of horsemanship. He began spending summers working for Al Dunning as a freshman in high
school. He continued to spend every break from school with Al until he decided he did not want to come home. He finished high school a year early and began working full time at Almosta Ranch in the Fall of 2001. In addition to learning the ways of the Reining, Cutting, and Working Cow Horse, Patrick learned about life and the importance of a solid reputation. “Working for Al, I was able to see how to make a business out of my passion. Working hard is only part of the equation; you must leave
room for God and Family.” During his four years at the ranch, Patrick finished his Associates Degree in Equine Science and met his future wife, Janelle. When another opportunity to focus on primarily reining horses presented itself, Patrick moved to Joliet, Montana to work for the Cottonwood Colt Company. He started colts and trained them through to their first show. Being away from Janelle, confirmed in both their minds marriage was the only option. Patrick and Janelle were married

in June 2006 and upon returning from their honeymoon learned of an opportunity to move back to Arizona. In September, Patrick began working for Loma Vista Farm starting and training Dealin Dirty offspring. Two years later, he was still training out of Loma Vista Farm but opened up shop as Patrick Flaherty Performance Horses, LLC; a dream that at times seemed would take a long time to become a reality. Patrick Flaherty Performance Horses currently resides at Outwest Stallion Station in Scottsdale, AZ. Patrick’s most recent accomplishments include being a multiple NRHA Futurity Finalist, multiple Derby and Futurity Champion and Reserve Championships throughout the Southwest as well as at other major NRHA events and the 2018 AQHA Professional Horsemen’s Most Valuable Professional presented by the AZAQHA. Although he has many titles, his most loved title is being Dad to his son, Logan and daughter, Layla. He has had his judging card since Fall of 2011 and looks forward to participating from the other side of the show pen.

Colic in horses is especially challenging to diagnose because, like humans, there can be many different causes for the same stomach ache. Did I eat too many nachos? A virus? Food poisoning? Gas? Indigestion? With horses, the word “colic” simply means “digestive upset,” so when your horse starts looking at his or her sides uncomfortably it is difficult to know the root of the
Discover the Different Types of Colic in Horses
problem and where it may lie in the digestive tract of your horse. To help you understand the depth of the “c” word, let’s discuss the different types of colic. Gas colic Gas colic is a mild, abdominal pain stemming from the result of gas buildup in the horse. This can
be caused by a change in diet, low roughage consumption, parasites or administration of wormer.
Sand colic
Sand colic is caused by the abnormal consumption of large amounts of sand while grazing or eating off dry, sandy ground. Upward of 80 pounds of sand have been
found in a colicking horse’s gut. Naturally, sand colic is more common in southern regions where the ground tends to be more mineralized. One way you can help prevent sand colic is to avoid feeding horses from the ground, and instead use a feed pan, bucket or feeder.
Enteritis
Abdominal pain can also be caused by enteritis, the general inflammation of the gut. This inflammation is most commonly caused by colonization of the gut by pathogens (bacteria or viruses). Learn more about this at the Importance a Balanced Gut Microbe Ratio in the Gut.
Impaction colic
Impaction occurs when forage, sand, dirt or other material gets lodged in the colon, causing the horse to be unable to pass manure and putting a halt to the whole digestive system. Impaction can also be caused in some cases by enteroliths, naturally occurring mineral deposits that can reach up to 15 pounds in size. Impaction colic tends to occur more in the winter months, due to a lack of hydration.
Displacement or entrapment
Displacement transpires when the large colon moves to an abnormal location, often occurring at the pelvic flexure, an area where the colon narrows and makes a sharp turn. In some cases, displacement can also lead to entrapment, where something traps the gut and can cut off blood supply.
Strangulation colic
A twist occurring in the gut causes strangulation colic, which often cuts off blood supply and results in dying tissue. This type of colic is very serious and the most likely to be fatal. Idiopathic colic The majority of colic cases are idiopathic. This means the cause is unknown or unable to be determined. While there are many different types of colic, one thing is for certain: prevention is key. You need to plan for your horse’s digestive health before disaster happens. Vitalize® digestive health supplements contain the precision-based prebiotic, Amaferm®, which has been proven to increase digestibility by nearly 17%. More digestion equals less colic. Vitalize customer Kinsley Gail Mascari recently said, “I’ve been using Vitalize for three years now, and I haven’t had one colic since. Not to mention it makes them look amazing and healthy.” For more information about the complete Vitalize digestive health supplement line, visit vitalizeeq.com.

Trainers gave it their all at the invitational Mustang Magic event held in Fort Worth, Texas, from January 24-26, 2019. With only 120 days to train their mustangs, 12 trainers from across the United States geared up for the exciting event held in conjunction with the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo. However, it was Luke Castro, of Rialto, California, riding 6-yearold mare Maybe Shez Gold who captured the championship. In September 2018, trainers were assigned three-to-six-year-old

mares to prepare for the Mustang Magic competition. The goal of the event is not only to give these talented trainers and mustangs a chance to compete, but also to raise awareness of mustangs and their versatile skillsets. Interested buyers were also able to purchase these mustangs after the freestyle finals. Preliminary classes began Thursday, Jan. 24, with mustang maneuvers. Friday’s classes included handling and conditioning and a trail pattern. Following each class, interested buyers had the chance to meet each mustang and visit with the trainer. The Top 10 horse-and-rider duos advanced on to the sold-out freestyle finals on Saturday, Jan. 26, and the competition was very entertaining. When preparing for Mustang Magic, something to take into consideration is the stock show environment. With over 30,000 people on the grounds watching events and competing, it can be slightly overwhelming. Just weeks before the competition, Castro was not sure his 6-year-old mare “Goldie” gathered from Cold Springs, Oregon, would be ready for the stock show atmosphere. However, his mom encouraged him to load up and make the 20hour drive to Texas. “She was a little spooky at home working with her and I wasn’t sure the Mustang Magic atmosphere would fit her. I honestly was not going to come,” Castro said. “When I told my mom, she said no, you’re going. I listened to her and here we are!” When Castro went to pick-up his mustang for the competition, Maybe Shez Gold was his second pick. He had a feeling from that first day that she would be special; however, he did not know how much she would teach him in the end. “From the first day there was a twinkle in her eye and I thought maybe she’s good. So that’s how she got her name, Maybe Shez Gold,” Castro said. “She’s been the hardest horse I’ve ever trained. I didn’t even get on her until the

and affirm the value, dignity, and importance of each person. Arizona which, tragically, has one of the highest Veteran suicide rates in America, is where Heart Rock Ranch works to raise awareness of the problem, while encouraging the use of horses in therapy for these Veterans. The on-going challenge is managed by Tracy Swanson, who lost her son Jake Swanson after serving in the Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The long-term goal is to establish Heart Rock Ranch (HRR) as a nationally recognized retreat offering a robust equine therapy program to our Nation’s Veterans. The program uses pairs a horse with each Veteran who are responsible for them during the program; providing a sense of purpose, acceptance, healing, and hope. In addition, they learn skills to help them manage their PTSD and regain control of their daily lives and relationships.

2 Clydesdale Horses Rescued from Icy lake in Pennsylvania Two Clydesdale horses broke out of their enclosure at the Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm Saturday. The 1,500 pound horses fell through the ice at Pine Grove Lake. “I saw two horse heads sticking up out of the ice. That was the only thing you saw,” Blue Ridge Hook & Ladder Fire Company Chief Leon Clapper told WBRE. The horses, named Wilhelm and Gunther, were in the icy water for an hour, as emergency responders cut a path through the ice with a boat and secured the horses with ropes to pull them to shore.

“Some of the other neighbors were horse people so they went and got heaters, their blankets and stuff like that. It was, you know, one hell of a team effort,” said Chief Clapper. The horses were given IVs and monitored through the night but appear to be okay. The horses were able to be guided out of the lake without any broken bones. "Bless their hearts, they're good strong horses. That was definitely something in their favor," Deborah DiPasquale of Quiet Valley Farms told WNEP.

Elaine Heney, the movie director/producer explains: 'It's said that it takes a least three lifetimes to become a great horse person. So I decided to interview some of the most remarkable horse people in the world, and create this free movie. I've heard some wonderful stories from people who have watched the movie, about how the movie has really helped their relationship with their horse. I can't wait for the 2019 premiere in a few weeks time.'

Longtime East Bay Parks Police Horse Trots Into Retirement By Maggie Avants
East Bay Regional Park District Police announced Thursday that longtime mounted unit member, Deacon, is hanging up his badge after 19 years on the job.
"A horse serving on the 'Mounted Unit' typically serves 8-10 years, but Deacon was honored with a farewell retirement ceremony after 19 years on the job," said East Bay Regional Park District police Sgt. Tyrone Davis. "At 30 years old, Deacon is now headed for greener pastures." Deacon, a Quarter horse-Gelding, was only 7 years old when he was acquired by the District in 1996, Davis said. Over the course of his lengthy career, Deacon was assigned to hundreds of details: Greeting citizens at the various Parks and Regional Trials, The Special District's Forum, Concerts at the Cove, Police Officer Memorials, Emergency Beach Evacuations to Facilitate Rescue Operations, Marching in Parades and School Visits. Most importantly, district police said, Deacon taught a countless number of officers how to ride. "He has always been steadfast," said East Bay Regional Park District police Sgt. Ben Guzman. "Although no horse is perfect, throughout the years Deacon was always who you put a new rider on." Deacon will now head to T.S & K.D. Glide Foundation in Davis to spend his remaining years with other retired horses enjoying equine paradise.

February Tip of the Month : Developing A New Way To Keep Cool
By Nate Brekken Working with the new 6.7L Ford trucks has been enlightening. We all have this notion that a new truck has all the bells and whistles we need and won’t have to touch it. With all the interior comfort features these truck have, you kind of get numb to the fact of what is going on under the hood. All of us, at Strictly Diesel, are information hounds. We like to know what our trucks are doing at all times. The information that
Truck Talk with Nate Brekken we get, assists us in helping our customers, which helps their trucks last longer and stay more reliable. Through our trips towing to NHRDA events, we have seen a lot of country and gathered a lot of information. Even though the 6.7L Ford has a cooling system that would rival any big rig, we found transmission temperatures were suffering when towing. Transmission temperatures should reflect engine temperatures - both systems work there tails off trying to keep these trucks cool. Our F-450 would see transmission temperatures over 210 degrees, which in our minds is not good. Through some trial and error we designed another cooler for the transmissions cooling system. THIS IS HORSE COUNTRY AT ITS BEST Wild Horse Country Located in southern Colorado, in the
Sangre de Christo mountain range. You will experience beautiful scenic views as you climb from the floor of the San Luis Valley to the top of the mesa. As you leave the small community of San Luis you will enter into a section of the west that is still “open range” (no fences) where it is common to find bands of wild horses, sometimes grazing along the highway that leads to Taos, New Mexico. Through out the area horses are found where ever they choose to wander. Additional wildlife; deer, elk, and bear abound. With the privacy afforded by few neighbors and large parcels, this is truly a great place to live free, in the western way.
