COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – In the sport’s infancy, early rodeos were informal events – exhibition matches of skill with nothing but pride and perhaps a few wagers at stake.
That is certainly not the case anymore. The PRCA is the premier rodeo organization in the world – especially when it comes to paying contestants. The PRCA recently passed more than $1 billion in payouts since 1986.
8
PRCA SURPASSES MORE THAN $1 BILLION IN PAYOUTS
Trevor Brazile, the PRCA career earnings leader at $6,485,426, praised the PRCA for surpassing the $1 billion mark. “That’s awesome, I know the last part of that has sped up from the first part and I think we are on that trend and I think we will see it continue in that direction,” Brazile said. “It’s just forward thinking.
Rodeo’s going to improve in leaps and bounds even from that.” PRCA CEO George Taylor wants to continue to build upon the billion-dollar mark, and with the inclusion of The American, a $2.3 million rodeo, the PRCA is poised to do just that. “We couldn’t do this without the unwavering support of our
Trevor Brazile
great sponsors and rodeo committees,” Taylor said. “Our goal is to escalate the sport of rodeo to heights it’s never seen before, and we want the next billion dollars to be paid out much more quickly than the last billion. We’re taking steps to ensure that happens; the PRCA strives to put more money into the pockets of its competitors.” Brazile acknowledged the sharp increase in PRCA payouts in recent years. Since 2015, the committee purse at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo has been $10 million. In the last three years, each of the 120 qualifiers for the NFR has received a check for $10,000 from the total purse of $10 million. That $10,000 counts toward their NFR and world championship earnings totals, and they compete for $8.8 million over the next 10 nights. “That’s obviously something special, and it’s easier to win the dollars today than it was before and hopefully the trend continues for the guys that come after me,” Brazile said. “With the rodeos that have improved, it’s awesome because you can see the potential with the way they run their rodeos,” Brazile said. “My hat’s off to the rodeos that have improved that much over time because it shows the potential out there for other committees.”

Yellowstone’ Premiere Draws All-Time High Viewership For Paramount Network Boosted by the star power of Kevin Costner, the two-hour series premiere of Yellowstone on Paramount Network averaged 2.8 million viewers in Live+same day to become the most-watched original scripted series telecast ever on Paramount Network — up triple-digits from the net’s primitive averages — and on its predecessor Spike. Yellowstone’s average premiere audience more than doubled that of Paramount Network’s first scripted drama series, Waco (+156%), and more than tripled the debut viewership of new comedy American Woman. Additionally, Yellowstone was the second-most watched ad-supported cable scripted drama series premiere since The People v. O.J. Simpson on FX in 2016, only behind AMC’s anthology series The Terror, which benefited from a big lead-in from The Walking Dead. Yellowstone’s premiere audience climbed to nearly 4 million when the two encores are factored in and is expected to climb further in Live+3. As can be expected given the subject matter, Yellowstone was older skewing, drawing a 1.0 in adults 2554 LSD, a .7 in adults 18-49. From Oscar-nominated writer/executive producer Taylor Sheridan, Yellowstone follows the Dutton family, led by John Dutton (Costner), who controls the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, which is under constant attack by those it borders — land developers, an Indian reservation and America’s first National Park.

Wickenburg, AZ - An exhibition featuring the work of nationally acclaimed artist Howard Post will open at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenburg, Arizona, on July 21, 2018.
Howard Post is a third-generation Arizonan who utilizes traditional Western themes in his paintings, which are based on his upbringing in ranching and the rodeo. As a young man, Post’s family reared rodeo stock outside of Tucson, and in in 1965, he won the Arizona High School AllAround Championship in rodeo. While pursuing a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the University of Arizona, Post joined the school’s rodeo team and soon after was on the Professional

Rodeo Cowboys Association circuit. In the late 1970s, he earned a master’s degree in fine art. During that time, he taught art courses and served as an art director. He also worked in commercial arts before realizing his dream to be an independent artist. Post broke free from freelance illustration work and focused on creating his own work in the early 1980s. Post concentrates on images of cowboys, corrals, horses, livestock, and wide pastures using his own signature impressionistic style and array of colors. Christine C. Brindza, Glasser Curator of Art of the American West at the Tucson Museum of Art, notes, “Howard does not include gunfights and bar brawls and other highly dynamic images. Instead, he focuses on the quiet, real moments of the American West.” Post’s work has been compared to Regionalist painter Grant Wood, Western artist Maynard Dixon, Modern artist Wayne Thiebaud, and others. But his distinctive imagery stands apart - Post utilizes his own color schemes and recognizes shapes and patterns in nature as well as in human-made structures. Howard Post will give a presentation about the exhibition at Desert Caballeros Western Museum on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 11 a.m. His talk is included with paid Museum admission or free for Museum Members. The exhibition runs through November 25, 2018. DCWM’s exhibitions are sponsored in part by AZCOMP Technologies; John and Lynne Boyer; Christine and Paul Branstad; Dita and John Daub; The DeVore Foundation, Alta and Bill DeVore, Trustees; Jim and Rea Ludke; Sharon and Lanny Martin; Elaine and Peter Schweitzer; and Kathleen Parrish and Doug Spencer. A talented young woman and her horses defy the odds to rise to the top of the show jumping world in a new family film, “A Sunday Horse,” scheduled to debut in 2016. The movie is inspired by the true story of Debi Connor, a rider and trainer from Ocala, Florida. The story is set in the present, although the main events occurred in the 1980s. The star of the film, Debi Walden (her maiden name), has drive and talent, and dreams of becoming an Olympic champion in the sport of show jumping. Unfortunately, she lacks the money and resources to train for the top tier of the sport and she is unable to afford the expensive horses needed for Olympic-level competition.
Debi defies the odds, doing farm chores in exchange for training and earning the emotional and financial support of an African-American entrepreneur with similarly humble beginnings. She buys several horses with no formal jumping skills, trains them herself and starts taking the Grand Prix jumping world by storm. When Debi and her horses make the U.S. Olympic team, her dream is within her grasp, but an accident during a training exhibition leaves her comatose and paralyzed. When she finally comes to, Debi sells her top prize-winning horse Touch of Class to her co-trainer, who takes the horse to the Olympics and wins a pair of gold medals for the USA. Despite a dire prognosis of never riding again, Debi perseveres through months of painful rehabilitation and enters the Governor’s Cup at the Virginia Horse Show, where, despite her ongoing struggles with paralysis and seizures, she competes against her old horse Touch of Class and wins. A “Sunday Horse” features a well-known cast, including Nikki Reed (Twilight), Ving Rhames (Mission Impossible), Ryan Merriman (Final Destination), and screen legends William Shatner (Star Trek) and Linda Hamilton (Terminator). The director is Vic Armstrong, renowned stunt coordinator and second unit director on hundreds of films including Indiana Jones films, Terminator 2, Mission Impossible 3, and six James Bond movies. Armstrong has a personal connection to the story: He is a lifelong horseman whose father coached Great Britain’s equestrian team for five Olympic Games.

USDA’s Farmers. gov Receives $10 Million in Funding for Development WASHINGTON, June 7, 2018 – Today, the Technology Modernization Fund Board (Board) awarded funding to support the development of USDA’s Farmers.gov customer experience portal, which helps better connect America’s farmers, ranchers, conservationists, and private foresters with vital USDA resources and programs. The Board is chaired by the Federal Chief Information Officer for the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Following the funding announcement from OMB, USDA Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation Bill Northey said, “Farmers.gov will provide a user-friendly portal for connecting agricultural producers to the USDA services and programs they need. This new resource also will reduce the time farmers need to take away from their fields today to fill out paperwork. We are very pleased that Farmers.gov is receiving funding to continue its development so USDA can improve the way we deliver services to our customers.” Farmers.gov is mobile devicefriendly and can identify for farmers the most convenient USDA office locations. Additional functions will be added to the site, including an interactive calendar, an online appointment feature, digital forms, and a business data dashboard. Additionally, when the 2018 Farm Bill is signed into law, there will be plain language program descriptions and a tool to determine eligibility.

Reading a Feed Tag: Part 3
Jyme L. Nichols Director of Technical Services Bluebonnet Feeds – Ardmore, OK Last month we discussed the minerals required by a horse in large volumes such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and potassium. We also covered the importance of incorporating the trace minerals copper, zinc, and manganese into the diet and how organic forms of these minerals may improve absorption rates and utilization. Finally, we touched on vitamins A, D, and E. This month we will turn our focus to less commonly used ingredients that really make a feed unique and beneficial to a horse.
Use B-Free of Flies to: • Kill & repel flies, mosquitoes & gnats • Kill & repel ticks, fleas & lice • Eliminate diseases from these insects • Use it for house fly controls • Save money with fewer applications • Add a beautiful sheen

Serving - Arizona, Las Vegas, California
Since we left off on the last article with the fat soluble vitamins A, D, and E it seems fitting that we should start this month with water-soluble vitamins. Let’s begin with vitamin C; many of us are familiar with vitamin C as we often reach for it at the first sign of a cold. That is because vitamin C is a biological antioxidant. Exact requirements for this vitamin have not been established in the horse, and horses have the ability to synthesize their own vitamin C from glucose, so most feed manufacturing companies choose not to add vitamin C to their products. However, researchers have found that there are some instances in which the horse may benefit from supplemental vitamin C. Horses over the age of 20 are believed to benefit from the addition of vitamin C to the diet, and since vitamin C plays a role in collagen biosynthesis it may be a useful addition to the diet of a growing horse as well. A horse’s vitamin C supply may become depleted from intensive training programs, a virus or bacterial infections. The Journal of Equine Veterinary Science published work from researchers at Ahmadu Bello University which showed horses undergoing transportation were less stressed if ascorbic acid (vitamin c) was added to the diet. The B-complex vitamins, also water soluble, include thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, biotin, folic acid, B12, B6, and pantothenic acid. Horses are capable of producing all of these vitamins in the hind gut through microbial synthesis, so again, most feed manufacturers choose not to add B vitamins to their products. Research may suggest otherwise. Scientists have found that microbial synthesis alone is not enough to prevent thiamine deficiency, therefore, the horse must consume thiamine through the diet. It is interesting to think about where the majority of vitamins are absorbed relative to where B-vitamins are produced. The order of movement through the digestive system is stomach, small intestine, cecum, large colon, small colon, and rectum. Most nutrient absorption occurs at the small intestine, however, B-vitamins are produced primarily in the cecum. Since these newly-produced B-vitamins cannot swim upstream to be absorbed, it is beneficial to provide B-vitamins via the diet rather than relying solely on microbial synthesis. It’s important to note that “minimum” vitamin requirements are very different from “optimal” vitamin requirements. Vitamin research in horses is extremely lacking, and scientists are finding that there may be a big difference in preventing deficiency symptoms (minimum requirement) and maximizing health, performance, and structural integrity (optimal requirement). It is through this mindset that many feeds designed for performance horses, growing horses, and senior horses now include an array of B-vitamins. Microbes in the hind-gut of a horse are arguably the most important component to ensuring overall health and well-being. The microbial population of the horse is like the second brain of the animal. If the microbial populations are disrupted in any way the horse will pay a price whether that be in mild or acute colic, hind-gut ulcers, poor nutrient utilization, decreased performance, or even just an irritable attitude. Adding probiotics (living microorganisms) to a horse’s diet may help improve immune function, reduce instances of hind-gut ulcers, improve digestive efficiency, and help horses gain weight and hold body condition. Probiotic use in horses has become increasingly popular over the last several
years, and it is important to note that all probiotics are not created equal. There are many strains of probiotics, and research is very limited when it comes to identifying the most ideal strains to use in horses. Another factor to consider is the ability of the probiotics to withstand manufacturing, storage, and then finally the shock of the stomach acid before finally reaching the hind gut of the horse. Some strains are certainly hardier than others, and some manufacturers employ unique and extensive processes for ensuring survivability of the microbes through the manufacturing process. Always look for a guaranteed analysis that lists CFU (colony forming units) to be sure that the product contains live microorganisms. Probiotics may be a very useful addition to the everyday diet of seniors and for horses under the stresses of training, travel, stalling, and limit-fed diets. Equine nutrition is complex and ever-changing. It is a science. Nutritionists, researchers, and feed manufactures continue to challenge past practices in an effort to improve what we already know. Education is power, we can never know too much, and it is the responsibility of each horse owner to provide the best nutrition possible in the given circumstance. Always remember that quality forage is the first and most important component of a horse’s diet, never overlook the power of a solid forage program.

Arizona Downs to Launch Simulcasts July 13 Track plans to launch live racing in June 2019.
Cool Summer Temperature!
The new Arizona Downs is bringing back wagering on racetracks across the country to the site of the old Yavapai Downs July 13. Arizona Downs’ simulcast room is being constructed on the first floor of the grandstand, part of more than $2 million in renovations. The facility will be open seven days a week beginning at 9 a.m. MST. Admission and parking are free. The local region is booming, and we will be an entertainment option for horseplayers and sports fans,” said Arizona Downs general manager Ann McGovern. “Our customers can watch horse racing, professional and college sports, and enjoy food and beverages. With more than 40 televisions, Arizona Downs will have something for everyone. And by opening in mid-July, we start accruing money toward horsemen’s purses, which will really be a boost in 11 months when live racing returns here after a decade’s absence.” Yavapai Downs last ran in 2010. The facility was bought out of bankruptcy court in January by J&J Equine Enterprises LLC, an entity formed by brothers and Phoenix-based JACOR Partners principals Tom, Dave and Mike Auther and their partner Joe Jackson, along with longtime racing executive Corey Johnsen. Live thoroughbred and quarter-horse racing in the summer will return to Arizona in 2019, with Arizona Downs running Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. The new owners chose to change the track’s name from Yavapai Downs to Arizona Downs to reflect the restoration of a year-round circuit to the state, as well as its importance to all facets of Arizona’s racehorse industries. The opening comes right before the start of two of the nation’s most popular tracks for handicappers, with Southern California’s Del Mar opening July 18 and Saratoga in upstate New York commencing July 20, as well as prominent summer signals such as Kentucky’s Ellis Park, Arlington Park in suburban Chicago, Florida’s Gulfstream Park, Monmouth Park in New Jersey and Minnesota’s Canterbury Park, where a number of Arizona trainers have spent summers since Yavapai Downs closed. Los Alamitos’ quarter-horse racing also will be a featured signal. Arizona Downs’ launch of its onsite off-track betting facility is the first step toward creating an in-state network of simulcasting outlets affiliated with the track in order to further strengthen purses paid out to racehorse owners.

The NetJets® U.S. Show Jumping Team placed third in the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ in Netherlands
Rotterdam, The Netherlands - The NetJets® U.S. Show Jumping Team placed third in the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ Netherlands on Sunday, June 24, at the CHIO Rotterdam. Chef d’Equipe Robert Ridland led the team of Beezie Madden and Breitling LS, Adrienne Sternlicht and Cristalline, Laura Kraut and Zeremonie, and McLain Ward and Clinta.
Laura Kraut and Zeremonie
“We come in expecting to medal and hoping to win, and of course it doesn’t always work out that way,” said Chef d’Equipe Robert Ridland. “But if we come out of it like we did this week, with a third-place finish with a totally different group of riders than our third-place finish last week [at Lotto CSIO Sopot], then it was a good day at the office.”

McLain Ward and Clinta The NetJets® U.S. Show Jumping Team stood tied for third with Switzerland on four faults after round one, while Germany and Belgium were tied for the lead with zero faults. Madden (Cazenovia, N.Y.) led off in round one with just one rail with Breitling LS, Abigail Wexner’s 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion, and then Sternlicht (Greenwich, Conn.) turned in a clean round riding Cristalline, Starlight Farm LLC’s 10-year-old Bavarian Warmblood mare. “There’s a lot of pressure that Adrienne hasn’t experienced before,” said Ridland. “I thought she had a good, solid day. Alan Wade didn’t make it easy; it was a tough enough course for sure.” Laura Kraut (Wellington, Fla.) had four faults in the triple combination riding Zeremonie, Old Willow Farms LLC’s 11-year-old Holsteiner mare, and Ward (Brewster, N.Y.) anchored the team's first round with a clean round on Clinta, Ward and Sagamore Farm’s 11-year-old Oldenburg mare. “I was thrilled with her,” Ward said of Clinta. “I thought she handled it spectacularly. I don’t know her at that level so well yet, and every class is another benchmark to reach. First round, she basically did everything perfectly, second round I came into the triple not quite the way I wanted and had B down because of it. It was just me learning how to tackle different combinations with her, but she jumped great.” The Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup Netherlands is one of the observation events for U.S. riders on the short list for the FEI World Equestrian Games™ (WEG) in Tryon, N.C., in September. “This summer is all about trying to peak in the fall for the WEG as well as a separate group for the Longines FEI Nations Cup Final in Barcelona.

The Dutta Corp. U.S. Dressage Team Rides to Bronze at the FEI Dressage Nations Cup™ in the Netherlands
Lexington, Ky. – The Dutta Corp. U.S. Dressage Team brings home bronze at the FEI Dressage Nations Cup™ The Netherlands at CHIO Rotterdam. Led by Chef d’Equipe Robert Dover, the team comprised of Olivia LaGoy-Weltz, Adrienne Lyle, Kasey Perry-Glass, and Steffen Peters delivered solid performances in the team’s first European Nations Cup of the season.

Sitting in third after the CDIO5* with a few points separating them from the leading teams of the Netherlands and Sweden, Chef d’Equipe Robert Dover was pleased with their continuing performances in the CDIO5* Grand Prix Special and Freestyle. Setting the tone for the U.S., LaGoy-Weltz (Haymarket, Va.), with her own and Mary Anne McPhail’s14year-old Danish Warmblood gelding Lonoir, were the first U.S. combination to enter the ring in the Grand Prix. The pair moved onto the Grand Prix Special where they finished with a 71.213 percent. Peters (San Diego, Calif.), riding Four Winds Farm’s 11-year-old Rheinlander mare Rosamunde, led the team after the Grand Prix finishing on an impressive score of 74.130 percent, advancing them as the anchor combination to ride in the Grand Prix Freestyle where they finished third with a score of 77.135 percent. Lyle (Ketchum, Idaho) and Salvino, Betsy Juliano LLC’s 11-year-old Hanoverian stallion, were hot on the heels of Peters’s Grand Prix score with a 73.913 percent. Prior to the start of the Grand Prix Special, Salvino’s noseband broke, but quick thinking from the U.S. teammates allowed the pair to fix it and get down centerline. Lyle and Salvino’s performance in the Grand Prix Special earned them a final score of 71.915 percent. Perry-Glass (Wellington, Fla.) piloted Goerklintgaards Dublet, the 15-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding owned by Diane Perry, to wrap up the Grand Prix in style, confirming a third top-ten U.S. placement with a score of 73.065 percent. Perry-Glass and Dublet shined in the Grand Prix Freestyle for a final placement of 77.060 percent. Based on the best three placings the Netherlands came in first with a score of 20 points, followed by Sweden in second with a score of 21 points and the United States in third with a score of 30 points.

Sens. Crapo (R-ID), Warner (D-VA) Lead Bi-Partisan PAST Act of 2018
On Thursday, May 24, Sens. Mike Crapo (R-ID) and Mark Warner (D-VA) introduced the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act of 2018 (S. 2957), legislation which is identical to the House companion, H.R. 1847, championed by Reps. Ted Yoho (R-FL) and Kurt Schrader (D-OR). Several senators have signed onto the bill as original cosponsors, including Sens. Moran (R-KS), Collins (R-ME), Blumenthal (D-CT), Feinstein (D-CA), McCaskill (D-MO) and Markey (D-MA), Daines (R-MT) and Toomey (R-PA). The PAST Act lays out common sense solutions to prevent the continued practice of taking action on a horse’s limb, aka “soring,” to produce an accentuated gait for competition. The bill would take important steps to build on the progress made since passage of the Horse Protection Act (HPA) of 1970, which precipitated a dramatic decline in the practice of soring a horse’s limb. The legislation would amend the HPA to establish a new system for inspecting horses, revise penalties for violations of the Act, and modify enforcement procedures. The legislation has been referred to the Senate Committee on Commerce. The AHC will continue to advocate for additional co-sponsors in order to move this important legislation forward.

Equestrian’s give up riding, more often than not, because of unrelenting back pain. Spinal stenosis is the leading cause of back surgeries in America today and is on the rise. If you have pain and discomfort that is preventing you from riding, chances are you have some degree of spinal stenosis. Spinal stenosis is a joint bio-

Spinal stenosis is when the bones of the spine move backwards and cause narrowing of the openings of the spine (the spinal canal and intervertebral foramina), disc bulging, nerve impingement, inflammation, and pain that can radiate down the arms or legs. The good news is, spinal stenosis can be corrected if treated early on! If you had a

After your evaluation, by a health care professional trained in the joint biomechanics, then you can begin some good spinal health practices, such as, minimize flexion movements, using proper joint biomechanics and doing extension

Arizona Mounted Shooting
A few of the most frequent questions we mounted shooters get at the matches revolves around the guns, ammo and horses. I’ll try and explain what we use for guns, ammo and hearing protection for the horses as well as the rider and how we keep our horses in shape in the summer months when there are not very many local events unless you are willing to travel large distances to compete. Guns - the guns are required to be .45 single action revolvers, meaning the hammer must be pulled back and trigger pulled for every shot. There are quite a few companies that manufacture guns specific for mounted shooting, some of the more popular brands are Ruger (Vaquero and Montado models), Uberti (Short Stroke KL CMS Pro Single Action), Cimarron (Thunderstorm), EMF (Pony Express) and Taylor (Running Irons and Smoke Wagon). Prices vary depending on the finish you like. Some makers offer a “Short Stroke” option for people with smaller hands or that just don’t want or don’t have the ability to pull the hammer back so far. Most of these guns can be bought and used immediately however most serious shooters opt to get and action job done which, can be anything from lightening of the trigger springs to clearance of the cylinder, knurling the hammer for better grip and grips that fit your hand better. Actions jobs can be obtained usually through the gun store you buy them from, Guns Plus in Surprise AZ as well as Legendary Guns in Phoenix have gunsmiths they work with to accommodate all your needs. As well as revolvers, Mounted Shooting also has a rifle & Shotgun class, there are numerous shotguns & rifles to choose from, the shotguns are a .410 that uses the same .45LC ammo as the revolvers. The rifles are .440 they use a different blank made specially for rifle use. Ammo – the ammo for revolvers and shotgun are a .45LC with a specific amount of black powder and are crimped on the ends, there is no projectile! What breaks the balloons is the burning black powder which has a distance (per CMSA regulations of no less than 10 feet and no greater than 20 feet). You must exercise caution and maintain safety as a black powder will burn you should you have an accident. Mounted Shooting organizations have very strict safety rules when it comes to guns, ammo and safety of both people and are equine partners! You must load your gun in a specific location and are not allowed to leave that location with loaded guns or take that gun out of your holster until you engage the course of fire, as well as once you finish your run you must unload your gun before leaving the arena area. All ammo is required to be stamped with the ammo makers name on the brass as to assure someone is not using non- approved ammo, guns can also be randomly checked to assure compliance. Hearing Protection - for both Horse and Rider – 99% of the horses competing use some sort of hearing protection that is available through many tack shops, vendors at matches or on line, some people make their own version of ear plugs using cat ball toys. Most horses will get used to wearing hearing protection in time, at first they may not care for it but they do get used to it. Hearing protection for the rider is personal preference some use the little ear plugs others don’t. Summer Months – So how do we keep our mounted shooting horses in shooting shape during the extreme heat of the summer? The answer is simple, we ride very early in the morning or late at night if you have access to a lighted arena. When I say ride, I mean taking them on a nice trail ride or taking them swimming somewhere or up north camping or the like. Early morning you may find some people practicing at the Ben Avery Mounted Shooting Facility before it gets too hot. For the most part there are very few events in Arizona for mounted shooting in the summer except for the ACMSA event held in conjunction with the Flagstaff Rodeo and the Clean Shooter Jackpot buckle series held at night at Horse Lovers Park June, July & August. If you want to travel there are many opportunities to compete depending on how far you want to go, California, Utah, Colorado, South Dakota all have events scheduled as this is their time of the year when the weather is nice. Stay Cool! Vito 2 Guns 68

UAC LOOPHOLES BY THE NUMBERS: Legal loopholes have hamstrung immigration enforcement and contributed to the crisis at our border as UAC arrivals have surged. More than 110,000 UACs have been released into the interior of the United States since the beginning of FY 2016, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. The number of UACs at ports of entry increased by 636 percent from April 2017 to April 2018. Border Patrol apprehensions of UACs were 331 percent higher for April 2018 than April 2017. Only 3.4 percent of UACs encountered at the border in FY 2014 from countries other than Mexico had been removed or returned as of FY 2017. UAC cases pending in immigration courts now total 78,000, up from less than 3,500 in FY 2009. Approximately 90 percent of removal orders obtained against UACs each year result from one’s
JULY 2018
failure to appear at a hearing. Removal orders issued against UACs based on a failure to appear at an immigration hearing have risen over 1000 percent since FY 2009. Gangs, such as MS-13, have used the influx of UACs for recruiting opportunities. More than one-third of the 274 MS-13 members and affiliates arrested in the Federal, State, and local led “Operation Matador” entered the country as UACs. ASYLUM LOOPHOLES BY THE NUMBERS: Loopholes in our asylum laws are subject to exploitation, contributing to significant spikes in asylum claims in recent years. Current law sets an easily-met credible fear standard, which allows aliens who make meritless asylum claims to remain in the United States for years while they litigate their cases. The number of arriving aliens claiming credible fear has jumped to one out of every 10, up from one out of every 100 before 2011. Since FY 2009, the amount of immigration cases originating from a credible fear finding has dramatically increased, while the percentage of cases ultimately granted asylum has dropped significantly. The Executive Office for Immigration Review has over 312,000 cases with pending asylum applications. Backlog in the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services affirmative asylum process has swelled by over 1900 percent since the end of FY 2012. The number of asylum claims received in FY 2017 was the highest annual number of claims in over 20 years.

Following several weeks of tense discussions between Congress and the Administration, on June 1 the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a final rule in the Federal Register authorizing issuance of 15,000 additional H-2B visas for the remainder of Fiscal Year (FY) 2018. As reported this spring, Congress authorized the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to raise its cap on H-2B temporary worker visas from the current cap of 66,000 to 129,500 visas for FY2018 within the context of the omnibus appropriations law passed in late March. DHS states that by issuing 15,000 extra H-2B visas – significantly below the additional 63,500 authorized by the FY2018 omnibus – the agency will prioritize employers who demonstrate that they would suffer “irreparable harm” to their business unless they are able to hire additional seasonal workers during the summer and fall 2018 seasons. DHS further states that it seeks to avoid possible abuse of the H-2B program by limiting the pool of extra visas to 15,000. According to the rule, DHS punts the broader temporary worker shortage issue to Congress, urging lawmakers to reform the Immigration and Nationality Act, which establishes the H-2B visa program. During the course of the extended back-and-forth discussions between the legislative and executive branches this spring, DHS claims that only congressional action can provide long-term certainty with respect to the issuance of more guest worker visas. According to federal regulators, addressing worker shortages through the annual appropriations process fails to create certainty, undercutting the ability of the business community to plan long-term. Since moving forward with a limited cap increase, DHS’s United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) has outlined some practical considerations for filing an H-2B petition per the new regulation: An employer “must meet all existing H-2B eligibility requirements,” which includes receipt of “an approved temporary labor certification (TLC) from the Department of Labor (DOL) that is valid for the entire employment period stated on the petition.” DHS reminds employers that “the employment start date on the petition must match the employment start date on the TLC, even if that date has passed.” Employers must also “conduct a fresh round of recruitment for U.S. workers if the TLC contains a start date of work before April 15, 2018.” And finally, a business must “submit an attestation on Form ETA 9142-B-CAA-2 (PDF)in which the petitioner affirms, under penalty of perjury, its business will likely suffer irreparable harm if it cannot hire all the requested H-2B workers before the end of the fiscal year.” The agency provides Form ETA 9142-B-CAA-2 Instructions (PDF) to properly complete the attestation. DHS further states that it “will not accept” an “expired ETA 9142-B-CAA from fiscal year 2017.” The agency will reject any “petition that does not include the new ETA 9142-B-CAA-2 attestation form for fiscal year 2018.” Recognizing the time constraints associated with the application process, DHS states that it will “adjudicate” applications within 15 calendar days for employers opting for “premium processing,” and 30 days for standard applications. To learn more about how to fast-track an H-2B visa application, please click on the following link: https://www.uscis.gov/forms/how-do-i-use-premium-processing-service. The unprecedented demand for guest worker visas this year will create a narrow time frame in which to submit an application. As details unfold related to practical considerations associated with the new rule, AHC will continue to inform members about developments and helpful anecdotes for members who are considering moving forward with summer applications. As a reminder, AHC will be conducting a panel discussion featuring congressional and industry experts on Tuesday, June 12, in Washington, D.C., as part of the association’s annual meeting. To view a copy of the final rule, click here: https://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2018-05-31/pdf/2018-11732.pdf. To learn more about guest worker visas and broader immigration policy developments, please contact AHC’s Bryan Brendle at bbrendle@horsecouncil.org or 202-2964031.

Farm Bill, Take 2! House Lawmakers Pass Ag Legislation, Boost Animal Health Programs House Lawmakers Pass Ag Legislation, Boost Animal Health Programs
76
JULY 2018
In the wake of a failed vote on the 2018 farm bill on May 18 – largely precipitated by controversy surrounding unrelated immigration policy issues – on June 21, House lawmakers revisited the legislation and finally passed the Agriculture and Nutrition Act of 2018 (H.R. 2) by a vote of 213 to 211. Since Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced that he plans to pass companion legislation in the upper chamber before July 4, Congress appears to be poised to finalize a bill prior to expiration of Department of Agriculture (USDA) programs on September 30. During meetings on Capitol Hill the week of June 11, multiple senate offices echoed a commitment to the deadline, reminding members of the horse industry that the chamber is prepared to work into the August recess to complete its legislative business prior to the mid-term elections in the fall. Fortunately for the horse industry, the $868 billion, five-year package includes provisions addressing some of AHC’s top priorities: authorization of a new National Animal Disaster Preparedness and Response (NADPR) program; additional support for the National Animal Health Laboratory Network; and creation of the National Animal Health Vaccine Bank that will prioritize risks posed by Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), among other threats. A preliminary review of the bill shows that although lawmakers generally met industry’s full funding request – totaling $250 million for the priority issues outlined above – for FY2019 only, the bill reduces those funds during subsequent fiscal years. For example, the horse industry and its partners requested $70 million each year to fund the NADPR, but received $30 million for 2020 and beyond. Fortunately for the horse industry, the final bill authorizes $150 million for a “priority FMD vaccine bank,” opening the door for funding vaccines that will mitigate other diseases. AHC will continue to advocate for industry priorities as the legislation moves forward.

Fuel economy concerns are coming up a lot lately. What can I do to improve it? Which manufacturer has the best numbers? How can I improve the vehicle I have to better fuel economy? Here are some basic answers to help you get the best mpg numbers out of your diesel pickup. 1. Use the correct oil grade for your truck. Running a base non synthetic oil in your pickup that requires synthetic oil may cause you to lose fuel economy. If your truck is older, consider starting to use synthetic oil. 2. Change your fuel filters often. Strictly Diesel recommends changing your fuel filters every 15 thousand miles for best longevity of your fuel system components. 3. Use a fuel additive for older vehicles this is a must. Any diesel pick up NOT designed to run ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel will benefit from the increase in lubricity of the additive you are using. New vehicles with the high pressure common rail fuel systems will also benefit from the added lubricity. 4. Keep your tire pressure at manufacturers recommended setting at a minimum. Keeping the tires inflated properly gives you longer life of the tires and makes it easier for your truck to move across the highway. 5. Make sure your tires are balanced and rotated properly - make
JULY 2018
Nate Brekken sure your front end is aligned and true to the rear tires of the vehicle. 6. Have your cooling system checked. Making sure your thermostat operates at the proper operating temperature will ensure your diesel engine runs properly. 7. Check, clean, and or replace your engine air filter. Without the proper amount of air your engine may suffer in performance causing added fuel consumption. 8. Last, but not least, and maybe way to obvious is, slow down. The difference in 75 mph to 80 mph on the freeway, believe it or not can be very significant. Take your time, smell the roses, pushing your truck through the hot Arizona sun takes effort. Less speed = less effort to make your truck go down the road. Although all of the above are small, making sure all of these items are in good order, could make a significant improvement in your fuel economy. Of course results may vary. Which brand of pickup has an advantage over the other is hard to say, in my mind there all pretty equal. Contact Strictly Diesel if you have concerns about the fuel economy with your diesel pickup. We will give you honest answers and help direct you in the best direction possible. 623-582-4404 Strictlydiesel.com

$5 Million Boost to Equine Assisted Therapy for Veterans On Friday, June 8, the House of Representatives approved H.R. 5895, the Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 Energy and Water, Legislative Branch, and Military Construction and Veterans Affairs (VA) Appropriations Act. Per an amendment offered by Rep. Andy Barr (R-KY), the House bill increases funds for Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies (EAAT) by $5 million. Specifically, the Barr amendment directs appropriators to “transfer $5 million from the VA’s Health Administration’s (VHA) Medical Community Care Account to the Medical Services Account for the explicit use for the VA’s Adaptive Sports Grant (ASG) program, equine assisted therapy.” On Monday, June 4, AHC sent a letter of support to House Rules Committee Chairman Pete Sessions (R-TX) urging the committee to rule the Barr amendment “in order” so that it could be adopted on the House floor. By way of background, Congress has already endorsed robust EAAT measures by approving increased funds for EAAT within the FY2018 omnibus. By approving the Barr Amendment to FY 2019 appropriations, Congress re-enforces an important commitment to our nation’s warriors when they return from combat. According to a clinical study conducted in conjunction with Columbia University, an estimated 14% to 30% of U.S. veterans suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Congress can help mitigate PTSD by boosting EAAT.
The U.S. horse industry employs nearly one million Americans and contributes $122 billion to Gross Domestic Product (GDP). EAAT programs not only provide valuable services for U.S. veterans, but the operations also support jobs for a growing number of working Americans, and “second careers” for horses who would otherwise retire from racing or other working roles. According to a 2017 economic impact study, EAAT supports more than 6,700 jobs and generates $311.7 million in annual revenues in the U.S.

Equine Gastric Ulcers: Causes, Symptoms & Management
By Standlee Western Forage
Horses are grazing animals –their digestive system is built to continually consume and digest small amounts of primarily fibrous material. Modern performance horses are meal fed high calorie feed stuffs with less emphasis placed on high quality fiber sources. This trend in feeding practices has led to a significant upswing in the amount of horses suffering from gastric ulcers.
What are equine gastric ulcers? Equine gastric ulcers are caused because gastric acid (hydrochloric acid secreted by parts of the stomach lining), and, to a lesser degree, the digestive enzyme pepsin, irritating the lining of the stomach, causing ulceration. Gastric ulcers are common in horses. Their prevalence has been estimated to be close to 90% in performance horses. What are the symptoms of equine gastric ulcers?
The symptoms of gastric ulcers vary depending on the severity and the individual horse. Most commonly owners report behavioral changes in their horse. Changes in behavior can be an increase in nervousness while tacking up or riding, a tendency toward a more aggressive behavior (ears pinned etc.), and some horses stop eating and therefore lose weight. Other signs include, but are not limited to, poor athletic performance, dull coat, altered eating behavior, weight loss, diarrhea, and colic. In foals, teeth grinding (a sign of pain) and excessive salivation are common. Ulcers also occur in the first part of the small intestine (duodenum) and in the esophagus.
What are the causes of equine gastric ulcers? Ulcers are caused by a variety of factors including: diet and feeding management - feeding high levels of concentrates, feed deprivation and types of feeds (timothy vs alfalfa, alfalfa is known to have acid buffering abilities) - stress of training or disease, mechanics of training (splashing of acid in stomach while exercising) as well as long term use of medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like “Bute.” Diagnosis of equine gastric ulcers: The only way to definitively diagnose equine gastric ulcers is through gastric endoscopy, or gastroscopy, which involves placing an endoscope into the stomach of the horse and looking at its surface. This procedure
is relatively easy to perform and minimally invasive. Horses are typically fasted for 12 hours prior to the exam and water is withheld for 4 hours. Feeding and Management: The treatment of stomach ulcers in horses involves a combination of changes to feeding management, medical therapy, as well as reducing stress on the horse. Turnout onto green grass pasture along with altering the feeding regimen is likely the fastest method to allow the ulcers to heal. If concentrates are to be fed, they should be fed in small amounts at frequent intervals. Adding alfalfa to the diet will also help by buffering stomach acid. By nature, horses are grazing animals, spending much of their day feeding. The grazing horse has a constant flow of saliva and passage of grass into the stomach, buffering stomach acid. If the horse must be stalled: Arrange for the horse to see the horses he socializes with. Consider offering a ball or other object that the horse can enjoy in his stall. Feed the horse more frequently to help buffer the acid in the stomach. Decrease grains in your horse’s diets that are high carbohydrate grains such as corn. Incorporate fat supplements to increase calories without excess grain. Medications that decrease stomach acid production are available, but are only necessary in horses showing signs of clinical diseases or when the predisposing factors, such as stress, cannot be removed.

American Horse Council
Action Alert
Call your house lawmaker today, support guest worker visa flexibility!
The House of Representatives plans to vote Wednesday, June 27, on a consensus immigration bill that addresses much needed flexibility in two major guest worker visa programs, specifically the H-2B and H-2A programs. Importantly for the horse industry, the House immigration package includes the following: H-2B visa “cap relief” in the form of apermanent H-2B returning worker exemption. By making cap relief permanent, Congress can establish certainty by removing the H-2B visa issue from the annual appropriations process. The bill also includes provisions from the Agricultural Guest Worker Act that would reform the broken H-2A visa program. The bill would create flexibility
by establishing a new, H-2C visa program that would provide visas for a baseline of 450,000 guest workers, for work periods up to three years. Please call your House lawmaker today and express support for the H-2B and H-2A guest worker visa reforms. You can reach your House lawmaker through the Capitol Switchboard at 202-225-3121. Once connected to the office, ask to speak to the staff person who handles immigration issues. If you have any questions on the guest worker visa issue and related legislative activity, please contact Bryan Brendle at 202-296-4031. For more information on the American Horse Council, visit www.horsecouncil.org.
H-2A Agricultural Worker Visa Modernization Joint Cabinet Statement Secretary Acosta, Secretary Nielsen, Secretary Perdue and Secretary Pompeo (Washington, D.C., May 24, 2018) — When President Trump addressed the American Farm Bureau Federation in January of this year, he reminded the audience that his commitment to our farmers has been clear since the day his Administration began: “From that day on, we have been working every day to deliver for America’s farmers just as they work every single day to deliver for us.” In keeping with that commitment, our Departments are working in coordination to propose streamlining, simplifying, and improving the H-2A temporary agricultural visa program – reducing cumbersome bureaucracy and ensuring adequate protections for U.S. workers. The Trump Administration is committed to modernizing the H-2A 84

visa program rules in a way that is responsive to stakeholder concerns and that deepens our confidence in the program as a source of legal and verified labor for agriculture – while also reinforcing the program’s strong employment and wage protections for the American workforce. In addition, by improving the H-2A visa program and substantially reducing its complexity, the Administration also plans to incentivize farmers’ use of the E-Verify program to ensure their workforce is authorized to work in the United States. As the agencies tasked with administering or facilitating the H-2A visa program, and thus closest to farmer and labor stakeholders, the Departments of State, Agriculture, Labor, and Homeland Security are embarking on a process to modernize the H-2A visa program by clarifying and improving the regulations governing the program. We look forward to delivering a more responsive program soon.
FARM & RANCH INSURANCE Monte Sparby Founder & President
Western Ag Insurance, Inc. was founded with the sole purpose of providing insurance services for the unique needs of farmers and ranchers.
Every farm or ranch operation comes with their own unique types of risks and liabilities. Some considerations we often see with working farms or ranches are things like workers compensation insurance, liability coverage if someone is injured visiting your operation, livestock insurance, general liability insurance, farm vehicles and more. We will aggressively work with you to determine what those unique risks and liabilities are and then help build a policy with broad and exible coverage that addresses those speciďŹ c risks and liabilities to help keep your dream alive in the face of disaster.

Lexington, Ky.– The United States Equestrian Federation (US Equestrian) announces that Debbie McDonald will succeed Robert Dover as the U.S. Dressage Technical Advisor following the FEI World Equestrian Games™ (WEG) Tryon 2018. Dover has served in the position since 2013 and will retire following the WEG as planned when he renewed his agreement with US Equestrian in 2016. US Equestrian conducted a comprehensive search process aimed at identifying the best individual to succeed Dover and ensure a smooth transition. McDonald currently serves as US Equestrian’s Dressage Development Coach and will transition to her role as the U.S. Dressage Technical Advisor on December 1, 2018 pending final contract negotiations. She will continue to serve as a personal coach to her athletes through the WEG and will not have a role in the WEG team selection or any selection to the Elite Program or WEG Short List. “Thank you to US Equestrian for entrusting me with this opportunity. I am extremely honored and excited to be taking on the position of Technical Advisor,” said McDonald. “I know Robert’s shoes will be hard to fill. His passion simply inspires me, and I will carry that same level of energy and enthusiasm as I strive to continue his success. I look forward to working with our talented athletes, their horses, and personal coaches to help achieve this goal.” As an athlete, McDonald heavily contributed to U.S. Dressage’s

early accomplishments due to her impressive achievements with the chestnut Hanoverian mare Brentina. Their string of accolades included a 1999 Pan American Games team and individual gold medal, an Athens 2004 Olympic team bronze medal, a WEG 2002 team silver and 2006 team bronze medal, and was the first American to win a FEI World Cup Dressage Final in 2003. She has spent the past 11 years advancing athleteand-horse combinations through the U.S. dressage pipeline. Her success has proved contagious as a personal coach having guided three of her athletes and their horses to the Olympics, including 2012 London participants Adrienne Lyle and Wizard and Rio 2016 team bronze medalists Laura Graves and Verdades and Kasey Perry-Glass and Gorklintgaards Dublet. “I could not be happier with the naming of Debbie McDonald to take my place as Technical Advisor/Chef d’Equipe,” said Dover. “Debbie has literally been my right arm for the past six years. Our training and coaching philosophies are identical, and this creates a seamless transition for our U.S. athletes.”

Proposed Texas Tech veterinary school gets a $69 million boost
Experts say there are not enough veterinarians in West Texas to care for the region's livestock. Texas Tech and Texas A&M are both taking steps to reduce that shortage. (Shutterstock. com.) The Amarillo, Texas, City Council recently approved a decision by the Amarillo Economic Development Corp. (AEDC) to fund up to $69 million to ensure the construction of a proposed Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine in Amarillo, according to a release from the organization. “The veterinary school will provide our community and our region with decades of economic growth,” says AEDC board chairman Brian Heinrich. The release states that the Texas Tech School of Veterinary Medicine “directly addresses the critical shortage of veterinarians serving rural communities in a cost-

effective manner by eliminating the creation of a teaching hospital and partnering with local and regional veterinarians.” In 2016, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board issued a report stating that the state could not support another traditional veterinary school but highlighting shortages of large animal and rural veterinarians in Texas—a shortage that needs to be corrected in efficient and cost-effective ways. Texas Tech has used those statements to design its proposed veterinary school. In the meantime, Texas A&M University is moving forward with its own plans for veterinary education in West Texas, announcing in March that a $22.8 million facility for veterinary education and research will be built on the campus of West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas.

Research supports use of FES to ease back pain in horses
Study showed improvement of multifidi muscle symmetry following treatments
A study presented by Sheila Schils, Ph.D. at the 2017 American Association of Equine Practitioners Convention discussed the use of functional electrical stimulation (FES), a type of electrotherapy that stimulates motor nerves responsible for muscle function, to reduce back pain in horses with asymmetric multifidi muscles. The principal of EquiNew, a company that specializes in therapeutic modalities for use in the equine industry, Schils’ presented the results of a study conducted by Diane Isbell, DVM, a private practitioner from Livermore, Calif., Suzan Oakley, DVM, DACVSMR, of Oakley Equine Sports Medicine in Florida, and Ugo Carraro, MD, of the University of Padova in Italy. The team worked with a group of 24 horses: 12 that received FES treatments and 12 that did not. All
12 of the horses that received the treatments were retired—two due to back problems and the remaining 10 for reasons unrelated to the back. None of the 24 horses in the study had been ridden for two months leading up to the study. Researchers administered 35-minute FES treatments to the 12 retired horses three times per week for eight weeks. Schils said researchers placed a back pad with six electrodes between thoracic vertebrae 10 and lumbar vertebra 4, which produced symmetrical longitudinal (from front to back) pelvic rotation for two seconds. This was followed by a two-second pause before stimulating again. After eight weeks of treatment, ultrasounds of the test group’s multifidi muscles showed a significant improvement in symmetry at all locations, with no change in the size of multifidi in the untreated group. These results, Schils said, suggest FES might help reduce back pain in horses with this condition.

STOMPING OUT EQUINE HERPESVIRUS
New vaccine development to protect against equine herpesvirus (EHV) has begun, according to the Animal Health Trust (AHT), an independent charity in the United Kingdom, employing more than 250 scientists, veterinarians and support workers. Dr. Neil Bryant of the AHT, who leads the research, said, “EHV is a major welfare concern for horses
98
JULY 2018
and foals and causes emotional, as well as financial, strains on horse owners and breeders around the world. It can strike any horse at any time, so a vaccine will be of global welfare benefit to all horses, including the thoroughbred and sports horse breeding industries, and would help control this serious and sometimes fatal disease.” A quick refresh on the disease: It’s a viral infection that can cause respiratory disease, abortion and fatal illness in newborn foals, the press release states. The extra bummer—it can also cause neurological disease in adult horses, which may manifest as only a slight wobble up to complete paralysis. The release further states that the disease can strike any horse, any time. For our equine buddies, this virus can lay dormant until the horse gets stressed. Then the horse owner transports the horse or mixes him with new horses, and bam! Neurologic signs manifest out of nowhere. But isn’t there a vaccine for EHV already? Yes. But, according to the AHT release, “there is still no vaccine licensed to protect against the neurologic form of the disease, and abortions still occur in highly vaccinated horse populations.” The release points to a high number of abortions in fully vaccinated animals in Hertfordshire in 2016 as evidence that a more effective vaccine is needed. “We’re at the beginning of a very exciting and potentially groundbreaking vaccine development,” Dr. Bryant said in the release. “Through our research, we will construct different viruses with attenuating mutations and assess their suitability as MLVs (modified live viruses). We hope our findings will enable further development by vaccine manufacturers in creating an effective vaccine to protect against the serious clinical signs induced by EHV-1.”
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue today applauded the removal of a burdensome regulation that has long plagued family farms. The rule requiring producers to obtain Data Universal Number System (DUNS) and System for Award Management (SAM) numbers to participate in U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) programs has been eliminated. Congress included this repeal in the FY 2018 Omnibus spending package, USDA’s official regulatory change will be published in the Federal Register tomorrow. “ I’m pleased Congress helped us to achieve one of our regulatory goals of cutting red tape for producers utilizing conservation programs by exempting them from SAM and DUNS requirements,” Secretary Perdue said. “These numbers were designed for billion-dollar government contractors, not everyday farmers trying to support their families. These changes help streamline the customer experience for farmers, which is a top priority at USDA.” Prior to this rule change in the

Merck updates Prestige equine influenza vaccine line-Features the most current clade 1 and clade 2 strains
Merck Animal Health announced it has added new influenza-containing vaccines for horses to its Prestige line of vaccines.
“For the past 10 years, we’ve been monitoring influenza, along with other common infectious upper respiratory diseases, through the Merck Animal Health Biosurveillance Program—a partnership with the University of California, Davis,” said D. Craig Barnett, DVM, director of equine veterinary professional services for Merck. “It was through this program that we identified and isolated a new highly infectious and relevant equine influenza strain from the 2013 Ocala, Fla., influenza outbreak that impacted a large number of horses from all over the world. This strain is now part of our updated line of influenza-containing killed virus vaccines and represents a current, clinically significant strain responsible for a large influenza outbreak in well-vaccinated horses.” The vaccines include Florida ’13 of the clade 1 family and Richmond ’07 of the clade 2 family, meeting current World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) guidelines for clade 1 and clade 2 strains. The clade 1 family of equine influenza primarily circulates in the U.S., while clade 2 predominantly circulates in Europe. “While we have not had any outbreaks of clade 2 in the United States to date, U.S. horses competing internationally should have clade 2 protection on board,” said Dr. Barnett. The Prestige vaccines feature the proprietary Havlogen adjuvant and the Antigen Purification System, formulated to maximize protection and minimize adverse reactions. The updated line of influenza-containing killed virus vaccines complements the Merck Animal Health influenza portfolio, headlined by the modified-live intranasal influenza vaccine, Flu Avert I.N., according to the company.

IEA Holds First Annual Semi-Final Competitions with Sights Set on National Finals in Oklahoma City
Columbus, Ohio—June 19, 2018 — In 2017, the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) adopted a new structure for their Western Program. This restructuring included new Regional assignments across the nation as well as a new Western Zone, headed-up by Zone Administrator, Todd Knerr. In addition, the IEA also adopted a new format for post-season competition that included a SemiFinals format (much like the competition format used by the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association – IHSA) that allowed more Western riders to compete in a finals-like setting. Using a two-judge system, each Semi-Finals included two days of competition and were held on May 25-26 in Harriman, Tennessee and June 2-3 in Findlay, Ohio. Western riders competed in regular season shows in their respective regions throughout the season with each holding a Regional Finals. The top 3 riders and teams from each Regional Finals then were divided into the two

Semi-Finals locations to vie for the chance to compete at IEA Western Finals at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on June 23-24 during the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Derby. Over 250 riders competed in the Semi-Finals with approximately 150 qualifying to go travel to Oklahoma. Senior riders in their final year of IEA were recognized at both SemiFinals with special celebratory events that included decorating graduation caps, flower presentations, and sweet treats for everyone. This weekend, riders, coaches, and parents will congregate in Oklahoma City for two days of exciting competition in Western Reining and Western Horsemanship to name the IEA National Champions. Judging the competition is the husband/wife team John and Betsy Tuckey from Liberty, Kentucky. Both Tuckeys are accredited American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), National Snaffle Bit
Association and NRHA judges. IEA Western National Finals will be broadcast on a live feed beginning at 8:00am CST on Saturday, June 23 with links at www.rideiea.org.Major sponsors of the IEA Western National Finals include: NRHA (Title Sponsor), Bob’s Custom Saddles, NSBA, Rod’s Western Palace, and Cinch Jeans. Other sponsors include: BeneFab by Sore No-More, Barn Manager, BridlePlates, Equine Journal, Equine Office, Hobby Horse, Judy Goldthwait Equine Art & Pet Portraits, The Mindful Equestrian, Montana Silversmith, Southern Equestrian, SmartPak, and United States Pony Club. “We are thrilled to again partner with NRHA in Oklahoma City”, said IEA Co-Founder and Executive Director, Roxane Durant. “The opportunity for our riders to rub shoulders with the best reining horses and trainers in the nation at the NRHA Derby is both exciting and educational and we look forward to another successful collaboration.”

About IEA:
Now entering its 17th year, the IEA has nearly 14,000 members across the United States riding and coaching Hunt Seat, Western and Dressage disciplines. The non-profit (501(c)3) IEA was organized to promote and improve the quality of equestrian competition and instruction available to middle and secondary school students and is open to public and private schools and barn teams. There is no need for a rider to own a horse because the IEA supplies a mount and tack to each equestrian for competitions. Its purpose is to set minimum standards for competition, provide information concerning the creation and development of school associated equestrian sport programs, to generally promote the common interests of safe riding instruction and competition and education on matters related to equestrian competition at the middle and secondary school levels.

Veterinary toxicologist warns of blue-green algae dangers to livestock Cyanobacteria produces microcystin, which can affect the gastrointestinal tract and liver Steve Ensley, DVM, Ph.D., a clinical veterinary toxicologist at the Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, a part of the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine, is warning pet and livestock owners about cyanobacteria, or blue-
green algae. Cyanobacteria, which grows and replicates rapidly in warm, sunny environments where agricultural runoff deposits nutrients into waterways that allow the algae to thrive, can pose a health hazard to animals and humans who come into contact with the various toxins it produces. The most prominent problem
involves a toxin called microcystin, which affects the gastrointestinal tract and liver, according to Dr. Ensley. When animals are exposed to this toxin, they may experience vomiting or diarrhea; if the exposure is severe, it can be lethal and cause liver failure in animals, Ensley said. “If there is a bloom in a body of water that animals are drinking out of, then we need to move them away
from it as fast as we can,” Ensley said. “Fence off that water source if at all possible.” If livestock and/or pet owners are worried that their animals could potentially be exposed to blue-green algae, then they should regularly check for signs of its development, Ensley said. Suggested Veterinary Products Element COAG Veterinary Analyzer Reproduction Ultrasound Solution “There is some confusion between the blue-green algae blooms and other vegetation on water,” Ensley said. “If a blue-green algae bloom occurs, then it looks like blue or green paint was spilled on the surface of nonmoving water.” With warm weather and rainy days on the rise, the risk of blue-green algae blooms may not slow down soon. “It’s going to be a concern until we get into cooler weather, so it may be a problem until September as long as the weather stays warm and we continue to get rainfall,” Ensley said. “Rain causes lakes and ponds to become enriched with an excess amount of nutrients, like phosphorus and nitrogen, causing the bacteria to bloom at a more rapid pace.” You May Also Like Cornell Receives Gift For Equine Education, Research Water samples for blue-green algae identification can be submitted to the Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. When collecting a water sample, use gloves to prevent skin contact. Collect about 20 fluid ounces (or 500 milliliters) in a clean, leak-proof container, and include any visible scum. Keep the sample refrigerated, not frozen. Samples should be shipped to the laboratory in an insulated box with a cold pack. For more information, contact the Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at (866) 512-5650 or email clientcare@vet.k-state.edu.
