Arabian the Top NATRC Horse in 2017 Beatrice, Nebraska, USA – February 21, 2018 – Tezuby, a.k.a. Ted, a 17 year old chestnut Arabian gelding, owned and ridden by Jonni Jewell of Decatur, TX, was named the winner of the North American Trail Ride Conference’s (NATRC) highest award, the President’s Cup, at its 57th annual convention in Albuquerque, NM, on February 9-11, 2018.
up food, but he is not one to drink well on the trail. I tried different methods to get Ted to drink better on the trail, and finally decided he would drink when he was thirsty. Hank always had his own agenda and I had to figure out quickly how to make things my idea. Ted, on the other hand, really does want to please, tries very hard to do what I am asking, and not second guess me like Hank would.”
conditioning, he bloomed into a handsome horse with a willing-toplease attitude, who won his first National Championship in 2016, his first year of competition. Ted is Jewell’s second President’s Cup horse and could not be more different from the first one, a bay Arabian called Hank. Says Jonni, “Hank naturally took excellent care of himself on the trail eating and drinking constantly. Ted never passes

Tezuby must be a living example of the old saying, “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.” What does Jonni think? In accepting the award, she said, “If you have a dream, don’t give up on it. One of my favorite lines from a song is ‘Keep on dreaming, even if it breaks your heart.’ You just never know when a dream may turn into what you think is impossible, possible.”

Throughout the ride year, this winning team was chasing another rider in points. It took trailering 9,800 miles and 13 rides, with five firsts, five seconds, two thirds and one fourth, to clinch the Cup at the final ride. Through this outstanding performance, Ted and Jonni also earned his second National Championship, the combined horse and horsemanship award (Jim Menefee Memorial), 1st overall heavyweight class horse, 1st overall heavyweight class horsemanship, 1st heavyweight class in their region, high point Arabian, and Ted’s 1000 mile award. All this in spite of Ted having been laid off for two rides because of a stone bruise.

Tombstone Gunfighters CLASS OF ’81
Everyone knows the names of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, but historians to this day are amazed at the incredible and legendary names that strode the boards in Tombstone, Arizona Territory along side the Earps and Holliday. A scriptwriter would have trouble improving on these fantastic names which, in many cases, the legends matched the monikers.
If you love Tombstone, Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, you will want to read these!

Anita Louise Knight Marlin October 19 1960 – July 1 2017
Anita was a true Arizona native and an advocate for all things that this great state had to offer. She was a friend to all, loved by many, and was always the life of the party. Whether you knew her for five minutes or 50 years you would never forget her. Anita spent her life with her husband Larry of 40 years and raised 4 children: Christopher, Michael, Rachel, and Matthew. She lived life to the fullest and on any given weekend could be found snow skiing up north, waterskiing at Bartlett lake, driving her rzr through the desert trails, or riding her horses. She grew up riding reining horses and then got into pleasure horses and showing AQHA with her daughter. She created a beautiful ranch within her Scottsdale home that was her sanctuary. She rescued many animals including chickens, pigs, and goats. She was a woman of god, a beautiful soul that shined so bright from the inside out. She was famous for her “I need a margaritas” and could be spotted from a distance due to her long blonde hair and friendly smile. Anita lost her battle with cancer last year but her memory lives on through her husband, children, and all those around her who’s lives she greatly touched.

Arizona Horseman’s Challenge & Expo 2018 The Arizona Horseman’s Challenge & Expo recently asked past Horseman’s Challenge Champions Thomas Clover, who is currently training in Star Idaho, and Lanny Leach, training in Ainsworth, Nebraska, a few questions about what motivates and moves them as trainers.
+We asked Lanny Leach, the 2013
Lanny Leach
champion from the very first Arizona Horseman’s Challenge, why he chose to participate; “I have been training since I was 12 years old. Each year from that time and up to today, I am always wanting to learn and improve myself as a trainer. Competing gave me another opportunity to see what my skills could accomplish in a very short time.” Thomas Clover, the 2014 AZHC champion, said, “I competed… because it sounded like a great experience and opportunity to meet

a broad community of trainers and horsemen, learn from them and compete with them. I also felt it was an honor to be selected to participate because there are many good trainers throughout Arizona.” AZHC & Expo asked what they felt was the most important thing they learned by participating in the Challenge. Thomas said he felt that competing in the AZHC was very educational to both people watching and the competitors in seeing new techniques and approaches. It seemed to be a good way to expose and spread quality horsemanship. When asked if winning the Challenge changed the way they approach training, they both agreed that it did not change their approach, it actually validated their techniques and approaches were sound and effective. When asked who the biggest influence in their training was, Lanny answered, “My Dad was my biggest influence in getting me started riding at the age of 2 and training horses as I got older. He put me on good broke horses”. Thomas said there were many along his journey that influenced him in different ways, but the most influential was his father; “Not only did he start this lifelong journey but I learned a general way of handling, thinking about, and working with horses that has stuck with me and has become the backbone of what I do now.” Both trainers are excited about returning to the Arizona Horseman’s Challenge & Expo to compete in the Challenge of the Champions. Lanny Leach and Thomas Clover will be offering ‘Ride with the Expert’ participation clinics at the event. For more information about how you can ride with the experts and to see their full interviews, visit azhcexpo.com.

What’s that Falling from the Sky, Spring Here or Winter, Whip your kids…
What the Heck was that, that fell out of the sky a bed?? Watch Imperialaz.com for our newest in February?? Did you see it?? No?? No, this is arrivals, and if you’re looking to sell…. Get it not a North Korea joke AGAIN, and no…. I’m in here! Not competing with 500 new ones here! not referring to the other Space X rocket either One more reason to like our Facebook page that got fired off, taking a Tesla into space… “Imperial Trailer Sales and Livestock Supply Although, kids and I did see the blast into the Inc, we unveiled our prototype of Imperial’s .. night sky… This time I knew what it was, so first 83”x14’ UT with removable side ramps, By Justin Legler it was a little more enjoyable LOL…. Wasn’t and 4’ ramp… Only building a select amount flooring the truck thinking my skin was gonna for this “Spring’s Quad Season”… Want one??? fall off! We were actually outside feeding the ponies and seen it…. Coop and the Don’t stub your toe!!! girls said, “Dad!!! There’s another spaceship”… I looked up, did a double take, Alright!!! Enough of my yap! Let’s get to the reason why most of ducked, almost ran, then was like, “Yeah, your right” LOL… Still spooked me you read my gibberish LOL… You ready for “Politics by A Dumb for a second! Not sure I’ll ever get over that, but probably one day I will… Then Cowboy”???? Let’s start with a moment of silence, and a prayer for those who were tragically affected by this horrific school shooting in Florida! it will be the “Nuke”… Yes… I’m kidding! “TRUMP’s” President…. That won’t Our thoughts and prayers are with you! I CAN’T EVEN IMAGINE!!! My heart happen! That, I’m not kidding about… Now if we can just figure how to change goes out to every one of you affected… As for Nikolas Crus, Satan is waiting for society’s way of thinking, so people don’t think it’s the gun that kills!!! Then you boy!!! I don’t care if your sorry or not… I will say this, and I may lose a few we’d be set… That could be the salt in the wound depending your views, but of you here… If I would have been one of those officers, my gun would have YES!!!! I’ll be chiming in on that…. BUT!!!!! You got to stick with me… mysteriously gone off during the arrest!! Just saying…. WHY????? What the Alright, back to what fell out of the sky…. Actually, wait a minute…. Back “HELL” is wrong with you kid where you have NO REMORSE???? Games they to the rocket that took the Tesla into space…. Aren’t those things (I mean cars) say… Well, my oldest plays them games, and he hasn’t shot a school up… How expensive??? You ever seen one of them on fire?? Me neither… But, I seen it on many millions of kids play those games?? If that was the case or cause, why the internet…. Fire fighters have to wear respirators to fight, because of the toxic aren’t all the kids shooting up the schools??? I don’t buy it…. What I do buy is, vapors due to the batteries or what have you, when they burn…. GREAT…. he’s a freakin psycho…. A lunatic…. One who was going to hurt regardless… Now we got one of those that could fall out of the sky…. It’s a bird! No… It’s a It’s that, or he has “NO FEAR”…. I hope one of your cellmates get you before plane…. Maybe it’s another Space X Rocket….. Nuke???? NO!!! It’s that damn Satan does… Suicide watch… Shit…. He’s in solitude…. Give the Sum Bitch a Tesla on fire falling back to Earth…. Yeah, that was a good idea, but hey…. I’m gun!! Better yet, give that Dad who stood up at the Trump deal who said, “Since a dumb ass Cowboy!! But what truly fell out of the sky?? Well, it was cupid with my Daughter don’t have a voice”…. Yeah, give him a gun! Let him send Nikolas an arrow where the sun don’t shine LOL…. Drum Roll…. You know if you read to where he needs to be!! Set the example!!! If not, it’s never gonna change… last month LOL… Hello everyone!!! Justin Legler here from Imperial! Welcome Now here comes all the Damn gun law crap… If you truly think it’s really to March! the guns fault… Well, you’re ALSO the reason this keeps happening! YEAH!!! I Who’s ready for Spring? You mean, this isn’t Spring…. This has got to be the said it!!! You probably don’t whip your kids either you tree huggin, tofu farting, warmest winter that I can remember! “GLOBAL WARMING”!!!! Yeah, tell that liberal ass wipe!! When are we as a society going to wake up and realize, it’s the to the residents in Billings MT, where my sister and her family live! Record cold parents of “TODAY”, and the Government who has oppressed society for the and snowfall there…. Just proves “Mother Nature” will do what she wants… past 16 years to get where we’re at…. Yes, that’s my opinion!! But look…. NO, I’m just glad we finally got some moisture at the end of February, and the temps FREAKIN LOOK!!! There’s no discipline no more and with that, no respect!!! dropped… I was starting to look for another zip code to live at… Summer was Everyone is scared to whip their kids… I’ll admit, going thru my divorce I was gonna be Hell, and we’d all be hanging with Satan until October if it kept it up, guilty too… Anybody who’s been thru one can relate because, you’re not all but we finally got some…. Still need more though… COME ON RAIN!!!!!!!!!!! there mentally… Your feeling guilty, and horrible that your kids are having to How about Imperial?? Well, we’re hiring! So is everyone else I guess… Last go thru… But then you wake up and realize… Especially after being around Craigslist ad I posted, I got 8 inquiries!! EIGHT!!!! Normally I get hundreds…. other kids who are not yours, and they’re freakin brats!!! Christ….. I got saints I usually get so many that I get tired of reading resumes, and conducting LOL!! I also don’t have to spank mine anymore… It’s called fear!! It makes you interviews, that I usually just say screw it!!! You’re HIRED!!! Then I miss the think twice, or respect… Whatever you want to call it… Who remembers being right guy… Then I’m yelling, “YOU’RE FIRED”…. Then the right one comes scared to death of getting whipped for doing something you’re not supposed along without an ad…. You too HUH??? LOL… Anyways, still hiring if you too…. Now, ask your kids that same question…. Most of your kids are probably know anybody! We could use them! like mine if you’re reading this magazine! But!!! Most rural areas even though Got a dealer in Prescott named Brad Miller with High Desert Buildings occupy 97% of this Nation’s dirt, only have 19.3% of the population… We’re & Barns who is just lighting them on fire!!! Jim Hoffman (YES… Hoffman seriously a dying breed… Nikolas is proof of that… He had no fear…. That’s Buildings and Barns formerly Dewey, AZ) does every one of his installs! They where the problems lies people!! That, and all these damn drugs medicating kids got 1 concrete guy…. The trio is taking the area by storm!!! If you’re in the for a condition made up for “A PROFIT”… Prescott or surrounding area, look Brad up! You call here, I’ll just refer you to I watched an interview of a Sherriff in the Northwest who hit it on the him…. YES, we are setting qualified dealers up in certain areas… Interested??? head… You see it?? It went viral on Facebook!! Where he was from, they Contact us! As for our crew, boys are busy… February was “Red-Iron Month”… hunted…. Everyday during hunting season, those trucks out in the parking lot Basically did nothing but steel buildings! Be sure to like our page on Facebook had guns in the gun rack, which was in the back window! Remember those?? “Imperial Enterprise Inc” to see completion pics… Only place we post them I’m old enough, or from a small enough town growing up, I do… That sheriff including our monthly specials, which you can also see right here in the Bridle & goes on and says, “There were no shootings then!! Did the gun change??? Or Bit! did we as a society change??” He should have dropped the mic!! Percentage Beau and our “Trailer Techs” keep banging them out… For the month of of guns in America’s households has dropped dramatically over the past 35 March, Beau is running a “Tire / Yearly Maintenance Special”! Buy any set of 4 years!!! Gun violence, massacres, shootings, or whatever you want to call it, has tires, he’ll give you 10% off of the “Yearly Maintenance”… He’s basically trying increased by 40%.... Guns are not the problem people… It’s what they’re calling to get you geared up so you don’t have to see “MAYHEM” this year… Once we Fatherlessness! A society alienating itself with the internet…. Pharmaceutical get coupons from the Bridle & Bit, we’ll also post on our other Facebook page drugs prescribed for conditions made up for “A PROFIT”, or because your too “Imperial Trailer Sales and Livestock Supply Inc… Make sure you like!! Got damn lazy to go outside a play with your kids… My opinion, this is creating a warranty job for a manufacture in here, and we got the entire side behind the the “Mental Health” issue… If we all truly want to save our children, get rid of slide exposed… Adding support gussets due to the load pressure of the slide, “Gun Free Zones”! 100% of all these tragedies have happened inside “Gun Free stressing a door in the belly of the trailer… “TRAILER SURGERY BABY”…. Zones”… Arm our teachers…. Teach your children respect by whipping their Good stuff! ass, and not letting them win everything…. Get out there and turn a wrench with Trailer side seemed like it was Truckbed month, and a bunch of Consignments them… Make them go outside… Give them a chore… Make them do the things left… Sold enough beds that we filled another load! Consignments customers were smiling because now, they have cash burning a hole in their pocket… Need continued on page 58 56

2018 Trainers Challenge
The Trainers Challenge is an unique opportunity to see 3 trainers put their skills to work to show the public their abilities and methods of
training an unbroke horse. This is NOT the way these trainers would normally start a colt, what they do in the 3 days of the Challenge they might take 30 – 60 days or more to get the horse really working well at all of the different skills they are training into the colts. This Challenge is meant to be a venue to educate the public that there are more than one or two ways that you can start a colt and succeed at getting a quiet broke horse. The format will have 3 – Trainers, 3 – Horses and 3 – Judges. Keep in mind that these horses will have just started their training to become that broke horse. The trainers are progressing far quicker than they normally would always keeping the horses best interest at heart. The judging at this challenge is based 10% on the horse, 60% on the trainer’s ability to train the horse and 30% on the trainer’s ability to educate the attendees. So the trainer that gets his/her horse to do the most or does a better presentation at the finals won’t necessarily win. The winner of the challenge will be the trainer that can achieve the highest success with both the horse & the spectators. Douglas Owens - Trainers Challenge Mark Lyon - Trainers Challenge

Standlee Offers New Bedding Solutions for Horses, Chickens and Other Livestock!
Standlee Premium Western Forage® introduces 2 new bedding solutionsHorse FreshTM and Flock FreshTM. ‘We are really excited to offer these bedding products featuring all-natural Zeolite.” expressed Dusty Standlee, CEO/President at Standlee Hay Company. “Zeolite is essentially ancient Idahoan volcanic ash with an impressive ability to absorb both moisture and odor.” continued Standlee. Horse FreshTM is positioned as a terrific solution to extend the effective life of bedding materials by absorbing odors and reducing moisture from animals. This product can also be used for other livestock and domesticated animals including goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, rabbits, dogs, cats and more. The Horse Fresh® Zeolite
granules are simply mixed in with the consumers’ preferred bedding choice. Flock FreshTM is a value-added bedding product for the backyard poultry market. This product combines straw with Zeolite granules and alfalfa forage to provide an excellent bedding solution while increasing coop activity for the flock as they search out the alfalfa morsels. Like
Horse FreshTM, Flock FreshTM effectively reduces odors and moisture in the coop and roost areas.
An incremental benefit with both Horse FreshTM and Flock FreshTM is that the used bedding materials are excellent composting agents for household gardens and flower beds. The waste byproduct from horses and chickens is excellent for soil augmentation and Zeolite’s slow release of captured beneficial minerals

Experience the healing power of horses in powerful Canyon Ranch retreat
Chicago, IL—Have you been wearing your mask so long that you no longer know who you are, what you want, or how to share your authentic self? The power to reconnect to the true you lays in a surprising source…a horse!
Join Devon Combs, the Cowgirl of the Wellness Industry, for The Healing Power of Horses Retreat on April 2326 2018 at Canyon Ranch in Tucson, Arizona. Combs is a Certified Equine Gestalt Coach and former competitive horsewoman, who has a unique gift for bringing out the different parts of who you are and helping you integrate your unique traits into living your authentic self. “My experience with Devon and her equine co-facilitators was absolutely magical and most definitely profound. Devon and the horses were able to focus in on a key aspect of my life in need of amending (one that I was not even aware of!) and together they provided me with a life transforming, healing experience.

What I experienced in just a few hours could have taken years in a traditional coaching setting.”—Wendy Kelly Intuitive and supportive, Combs will help you heal your past, get clear on where you’re headed, and unearth your dreams. Through partnering with horses, learn to speak their truth and become comfortable with vulnerability in the atmosphere of total acceptance by the animal. Each day will start and end at Canyon Ranch to experience all the rest, relaxation, and Life Management integration necessary to make this experience unparalleled. During the middle of the day, 15 minutes away at Tanque Verde Ranch, (transportation provided), you’ll explore who you are with the horses as your guides, and get clear about what you want from life and where you’re headed. “Working with Devon surpassed my wildest expectations. She has a deep and natural gift of intuition that leads you through your emotions in an
extremely organic way. Her synergy with the horses – and ability to partner with them rather than “use” them – is nothing short of extraordinary. It was more meaningful than any time I’ve ever spent with counselors or therapists in the past. Devon empowered me to speak my truth in a way I never had before. This year I have launched a business and am marrying the man of my dreams – both topics that Devon led me through during my coaching sessions.”— Jennifer Beck The four-day/three-night retreat takes place in the beautiful Sonoran Desert at Canyon Ranch, one of the top spas in the world. The retreat includes accommodations, all meals, access to fitness, pool and spa facilities, over 225 classes and workshops to choose from offered by Canyon Ranch professionals daily sessions with Combs, transportation to and from the Tucson airport, all taxes and fees and

Kelby Phillips wins World’s Greatest Horseman Title
In a field of 10 World’s Greatest Horseman finalists that many reined cow horse industry veterans described as the toughest in recent memory, Scottsdale, Arizona, professional Kelby Phillips won the coveted title riding Hickory Holly Time, owned by DT Horses. 2018 Reserve World’s Greatest Horseman Phillip Ralls, riding Call Me Mitch, owned by Estelle Roitblat. After nine days of non stop reined cow horse action in Fort Worth, Texas, the National Reined Cow Horse Association Celebration of Champions wrapped up on Saturday, February 17 with the DT Horses World’s Greatest Horseman Finals in front of a sellout crowd at the Will Rogers Memorial Center. A showdown developed halfway through the very first event, the herd work. Draw five, Kelby Phillips, riding Hickory Holly Time (One Time Pepto x Hickorys Holly Cee x Doc’s Hickory), jumped up and marked the high score, a 220. Then, the very next to go, Phillip Ralls and Call Me Mitch (Metallic Cat x Miss Hickory Hill x Doc’s Hickory), earned a 220.5.

2018 World’s Greatest Horseman Kelby Phillips, riding Hickory Holly Time for owner DT Horses. These two continued neck-andneck at the top of the leader board after the second event ,the rein work. Kelby and Hickory Holly Time were first to go, earning a 222.5 from the judges. Then draw two was Phillip Ralls and Call Me Mitch, just a point behind, with a 221.5 The third event, the steer stopping, is notorious for shaking things up but the two leaders continued on a roll. Kelby gained an advantage when he scored 224.5 - but Phillip remained a huge threat with his steer stopping score of 221. Going into the fence work, Kelby and Hickory Holly Time had a fourpoint advantage. They were second in the draw, and earned a 223.5 from the judges. However, Phillip and Call Me Mitch were last to go down the fence and still had a shot. While this team had the high fence work score of the World’s Greatest Finals - a 225 - it was not quite enough to take over the lead. Phillip and Call Me Mitch finish as Reserve - and Kelby Phillips celebrated his first World’s Greatest Horseman Championship.

NATE STRICTLY DIESEL : tip for March
Care for your Transmission
Strictly Diesel has been repairing automatic transmissions for quite some time now. With these repairs, we have learned a lot over the years. Typically, a minor repair goes a long way, whether it be a solenoid replacement, band
adjustment, wiring repair or just maintenance, - keeping your automatic transmission on the road is a priority to us here at Strictly Diesel. With some trucks, now over 20 years old, some of these units are in need of more than just a repair. Hardened seals, worn out clutches and questionable internal parts are all in need of attention after time and mileage add up.

Equestrians fear EHV with good reason
All alfalfa pellet
Ask horse owners to name their most-feared horse diseases, and chances are equine herpesvirus, or EHV, will be on the list. With the competition season underway, it’s important for equestrians to be vigilant and take preventive measures, from vaccination to biosecurity. A good first stop for information is the Equine Disease Communication Center’s website, which tracks outbreaks and provides disease information and biosecurity protocols. EHV spreads from horse to horse through nasal discharge, whether from nose-to-nose contact, droplets in the air, or shared equipment, feed, or water. EHV spreads from horse to horse through nasal discharge, whether by nose-to-nose contact, aerosol droplets sneezed or coughed into the air, or shared equipment and feed or water. The types equestrians are most likely to see, EHV-1 and EHV-4, often cause only respiratory illness with few long-term aftereffects, but EHV’s easy movement between horses and the fact that the virus can cause potentially fatal neurological symptoms have made it a serious concern for horse owners, facility managers, and competition organizers alike.

The agricultural community received a minor ELD enforcement reprieve until March 17; the AHC has also requested a one-year exemption on behalf of the horse industry that is still in the works—they are partnering with other livestock organizations to make that request. Preliminarily, AHC met with the United States Department of Transportation in January 2018 to voice the horse industry’s concerns over the ELD mandate guidelines. On Feb. 21, DOT released two guidance documents that shed more light on the rule as it pertained to horses and agriculture. They also opened a comment section on their site and put out a call for questions and concerns, which will be used to develop a frequently asked question document. AHC expects 85% of the horse industry to be exempt from the ELD

Currently, federal guidelines that might require ELD compliance include: Vehicles used for commercial hauling Hauling activities fall outside the existing exemptions for livestock Driver is otherwise required to have commercial driver’s license based on combined weight of truck and trailer Current exemptions to the ELD requirement include owners/drivers who: Operate solely within a 100-mile radius from horse’s location and work no longer than 12 hours daily Drive older-model vehicles (2000 model or earlier) Minimum numbers of operating days each month (8 days or less per month) Includes drivers who are currently not required to complete records of duty, for instance. *Note: CLD requirements might still be required if you meet those requirements, pursuant to your state regulations.

For the Record: La Fiesta de los Vaqueros
1944, cowboys have had a lot to celebrate at La Fiesta de los Vaqueros in Tucson, Ariz. This iconic, Southwestern rodeo has featured some of ProRodeo’s biggest names as they compete for one of the biggest payouts of the year. In 2017, the Tucson rodeo set an arena record for total payout as the 23rd largest PRCA rodeo of the year with $331,218. With such a large payout, it’s not uncommon for cowboys to leave Tucson with more than $10,000, but only the best make the arena record book. Cowboys have from Feb. 17-25 to leave their mark at La Fiesta de los Vaqueros if they can top the following arena records. Cody DeMers set the arena record for most money won in all-around with $14,025 in 2007. Bareback riding’s competition was fierce in 2006, as two records were set. Ryan Gray had a 92-point ride and Jessy Davis made 178 points on two head. Five steer wrestlers share the Tucson arena record of 3.8 seconds

– Lynn Nieveen, Brian Bauerle and Cash Myers (2002), Travis Carnine (2011), and Curtis Cassidy (2017). The three-run average record of 13.6 seconds was set by Josh Peek in 2011 and matched by Casey McMillen in 2013. Two pairs of team ropers set the Tucson arena record of 4.9 seconds in 2008, Matt Sherwood and Randon Adams, and Derrick Begay and Victor Aros. Their record time of 4.9 seconds was matched by Spencer Mitchell and Broc Cresta in 2011. The threerun average record of 17.1 seconds was set by Travis Tryan and Matt Zancanella in 2003. Saddle bronc rider Zeke Thurston set the arena record in 2015 with his 90-point ride. The two-head average record of 176 points was set by Billy Etbauer in 2004. Tucson’s longest-standing arena records belong to two tie-down ropers. Jim C. Smith made a 7.7-second run in 1993 and Rusty Sewalt clocked in at 26.6 seconds on three runs that same year. Barrel racer Barbara Merrill holds the Tucson record with her 16.97-second run in 2004.

Arizona Mounted Shooting Mounted Shooting Article 3, Local rising Stars
This month I’d like to spotlight a few of the local young rising stars that are making a name for themselves in this exciting sport. They are extremely dedicated to the sport and put in the work to be fierce competitors in their respective classes moving up from wranglers to their current rankings. Our 1st rising star is Cassidy Garner. Cassidy started riding horses at a very young age, her parents had her sitting on a horse at 3 months old and she can’t even remember not riding horses. Prior to her mounted shooting career Cassidy competed in barrels, poles, goat tying, obstacles and is currently learning team roping! Cassidy began mounted shooting in 2013 at 8 years old as a wrangler and earned her 1st buckle as the ACMSA 2013 Wrangler Limited High Point Champion. She also has won a 2014 Western US Championship Wrangler Limited Buckle and a 2015 Western US Championship Wrangler Open Buckle. At the age of 12, Cassidy moved from Wrangler to the Ladies 1 class. She quickly earned the required wins and moved up to a Ladies Level 2. Cassidy enjoys mounted shooting because you must incorporate so many different skills such as gun handling, riding, course management and the fact that she can enjoy it with her family. Her mom competes as a Ladies 4 as does her grandfather a Senior Men’s 4. Cassidy has a new horse named Buzzy since she recently retired her favorite horse Snickers who is now 23 years old and has won numerous events for both her and her grandfather. Our 2nd rising Star is Liam Stillson. Liam has been riding since he was 2 years old. Prior to mounted shooting he competed in Gymkhanas, and trail riding. He saw mounted shooting at the annual Ben Avery Expo when he was 4 and told him mom he wanted to try it. Liam competed as a Wrangler Limited and Wrangler Open until he was old enough to become a Mens Level 1. Liam splits his time between mounted shooting and football his other passion. He currently rides his mom’s ex jumper a 18 year old Appendix QH Dude. Our 3rd rising star is Sammy Jo Schaefer. Sammy has been riding since she can walk, notice a trend here with these youngsters? Sammy has competed in Junior & High School Rodeo, Gymkhana’s, trail obstacle courses and was on the country cuties drill team. She has also competed in team roping, barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, and calf roping, as well as competing in pee-wee rodeo before she was old enough for junior and high school rodeo. Sammy says mounted shooting gives her an adrenaline rush that she never experienced in high school rodeo events. Sammy currently rides a 19 year old dun grade mare named Dixie and has recently moved up to a Ladies level 3. Sammy’s goal is to move up through the levels as high as she can and win as many mounted shooting titles as she can. These young guns and there are lots of them throughout the country are the future of mounted shooting. As the sport continues to evolve we see more and more of the youngsters that are really talented competitors moving up the ranks. If you’d like to know how to get involved in the sport contact one of your local clubs or come out to an event and watch. I’ve highlighted the youngsters for this article but you don’t have to be young to enjoy the sport, myself, I didn’t get involved in the sport until I was 55 years old and there are many like me out there competing right now. Don’t let age deter you from trying something new! Don Vito For up to date event schedule please see ACMSA.com or Clean Shooter Jackpot Facebook Page.

Certainly, things differ about ranching from region to region. Do the Math for Improved Equine Nutrition
Reading a hay analysis report or puzzling over the ingredients in feed or supplements can be a chore, yet when considering particular elements—selenium, for example— some minor math can make a major difference to your horse’s health.
Feed tags and hay analyses often list ingredients as “ppm” or parts per million. Does this confuse you? You aren’t alone. The best way to think of ppm is as milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) of feed (since a mg is a one millionth “part” of a kg). Therefore, when using mg/kg, all you have to do is make sure you’re dealing with kg of feed (instead of lbs) before doing your calculations. Consider this example: Your hay contains 0.2 ppm (mg/kg) of selenium. How many mg of selenium does 20 lbs of hay contain? First, you need to convert the lbs to kg. Since there are 0.454 kg in one lb, make the conversion by multiplying lbs by 0.454. So, 20 lbs multiplied by 0.454 equals 9.08 kg (20 x 0.454 = 9.08). Now that you have your hay measure in kgs, you’re ready to calculate mg of selenium. Multiply 9.08 kg of hay by 0.2 ppm (or mg/kg) (9.08 x 0.2 = 1.816). That rounds to 1.8 mg of selenium in your 20 lbs of hay. Formulas to remember when

working with ppm: · Convert lbs to kg: lbs x 0.454 = kg · Calculate to find mg: kg X ppm (or mg/kg) = mg What about percentages? The concentration of many nutrients can be presented as a percentage instead of ppm. Protein, fat, carbohydrates, and major minerals are measured as grams, rather than mg. Let’s say you would like to know the number of grams of protein in 20 lbs of your horse’s hay. It contains 8% crude protein. First step, convert lbs to grams: 20 lbs hay X 454 g/lb = 9080 grams. Next, multiply the grams of hay by the percentage (move the decimal point left two spaces): 9080 lbs of hay X .08 = 726.4 grams of protein. Formulas to remember when working with percentages: · Convert lbs to grams: lbs x 454 = grams · Calculate to find grams: grams X percentage (move left two decimals) = grams

This mare has an old injury to the lateral side of her right front cannon bone, with deep scarring. There was extensive soft tissue damage which restricted her movement, causing a shortness of stride. This image shows visible enlargement of the soft tissue injury by its heat signature from recurrent inflammation. Note that the right leg is visibly larger than the left leg.
Following 8 weeks of Neprofin administration, this mare showed a marked improvement. Heat signatures have returned to normal, showing virtually no signs of inflammation or pain. Neprofin was able to digest and eliminate the inflamed scar tissue mass, which had caused lameness and a shortened stride. Note that both legs are now identical in size and shape. The mare is now sound and bears weight evenly on both front legs.

WESTERN TRADE DAYS (WTD) was organized as a fund raiser for Mayer Area Meals (MAMOW) on Wheels, who feeds 75 to 80 people a day in our rural area. It is held in our two acre open arena, 12660 Central Avenue, one block north of Mayer Post Office. 100% of sponsorship and 100% of net proceeds go directly to MAMOW. Volunteers help with this show and no fees are charged to MAMOW. However, last year brought devastation to our area. The Goodwin Fire came up to our town boundaries and authorities ordered all residence to evacuate. (For three days) Three weeks later, the July 19 Monsoon hit with vengeance. Within 18 minutes, our normally dry creek bed on the side of our arena became a raging river swelling over its banks filling our property with five feet of black soot filled water, burnt debris and dirt. The force of the water took our horse trailer and several antique wagons a mile downstream, completely destroying them, as well as severe damage to our property. My husband, Don, had to be rescued after getting our horses to safety. At this point we would not be able to get our property in order to host the WTD November Holiday Festival. It was rescheduled for May 11 and 12, 2018, 9AM –
4PM.
Many news reports said Mayer was wiped off the map, but that was MARCH 2018
Saving Don from drowning not true! Historic Mayer is the center of the state known as the” Heart of Arizona” at 4250 ft. elevation, 25 miles south of Prescott on highway 69. MAMOW will be serving breakfast and lunch for a donation, local churches donate homemade desserts for sale, pony rides for children, gold panning for anyone, vendors from all over the state will be selling unique one-of-akind gifts for Mother’s Day or any gift giving day. 2018 NRHA Convention & Awards Concludes in Oklahoma City
February 23, 2018 - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – The third annual National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Convention & Awards concluded February 10, and after four days of education, constructive discussion and networking, the event was clearly deemed a success. The convention started with NRHA Executive Committee and NRHA Board of Directors meetings, which set a productive tone for the rest of the week. The NRHA Board of Directors had their first reading of 2019 proposed rule changes, received an update on the 2018 European Summit that was held earlier this year, approved the 2018 NRHA Derby schedule and also got a first-hand demonstration of the information technology rebuild project. NRHA Directors also had the opportunity to give an update on their region including successes and challenges they are currently facing. The board also approved for the well-received NRHA Pro Trainer magazine to move to a quarterly publication and allocated the necessary resources to ensure current NRHA Professionals receive the publication.
of topics such as media training and an update on the Electronic Logging Devices mandate. Saturday night concluded with a star-studded celebration as NRHA World Champions and various other winners were presented with their awards. The NRHA Judges Summit and Annual General Membership (AGM) meeting were also held Saturday prior to the awards banquet. Attendees of the AGM received updates on the Reining Horse Foundation, NRHA financials and the strategic plan and watched as Mike Deer was awarded his NRHA President’s buckle made by NRHA Corporate Partner Montana Silversmiths. When asked about the event, NRHA President Mike Deer had this to say, “I always look forward to the NRHA Convention & Awards. It allows our membership, committees, board and staff to gather together and set the tone for all the great things we want to accomplish this year. Conversations among everyone were passionate and purposeful, making each meeting a true success. 2018 is going to be an outstanding year for NRHA.”
Other items of discussion included: Dual entry options were added and a Prime Time payout clarification was made to the 2018 Futurity Conditions. NRHA Luxembourg was approved as a new NRHA Affiliate. 2018 Election Procedures – This year’s procedures and deadlines were approved with the following positions up for election: vice president, director-at-large on the executive committee and director for the Southwest, Southeast and Mountain regions. Friday and Saturday morning were full of committee meetings, all of which were loaded with ideas and discussion on how to continue improving the sport of reining. NRHA Professionals attend the Professionals Summit1 on Saturday morning where they had guest speakers covering a variety

Blake Knowles reclaims winning ways in Tucson
TUCSON, Ariz. - The Tucson (Ariz.) Rodeo, affectionately known as La Fiesta De Los Vaqueros, translates to The Cowboy Party. After his performance on Feb. 25, steer wrestler Blake Knowles has plenty of reasons to celebrate. The 35-year-old Knowles, a three-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier, entered Sunday’s final performance placed second in the average with a two-head time of 10.6 seconds. Despite the logjam atop the steer wrestling leaderboard, Knowles saved his best for last, closing out his weekend with the rodeo’s best bulldogging run of 4.3 seconds. Needless to say, the Columbia River Circuit cowboy was pleased to add an important win early in the season. “It feels good”, Knowles said. “Obviously, anytime you can come away with a win at one of these winter rodeos, you’re always
happy. It always feels good to succeed.” Immediately before he was set to ride into the box for the concluding performance, Knowles saw fellow bulldogger Josh Clark reclaim the average lead. Despite the inherent pressure the rodeo presented, Knowles’ focus was on himself. “I tried to watch the first couple guys go to get a feel for the start,” Knowles said. “I was trying to get a feel for my strategy. I knew Josh had made a good run, but to be honest, I knew I had a good steer that I was supposed to win the rodeo on. At that point, I wasn’t really paying attention to the times because I dang sure had drawn a great one.” Behind the scenes, Knowles was scrambling to come up with a solution to a rather common conundrum. Knowles’ go-to, roan horse recently developed mild lameness issues, and he ultimately decided that hauling the horse
wouldn’t benefit either party. However, the family aspect of rodeo always seems to find a way to lend a hand. “My good friend Billy Bugenig had a horse there that he purchased last fall,” Knowles said. “I was able to call Bill and he said ‘Yeah, sure, you can ride him’. That was the first time I’d ever rode that horse and I was really pleased with him. It’s always nice to have good horses of your own, but it’s pretty valuable to have friends with good ones too. “(Tomcat) had great feet in the field, and he just felt good to me.” Knowles’ previous two seasons hadn’t gone his way following his third WNFR qualification in 2015. Still, having added a check worth $4,786 to his early season winnings, Knowles is satisfied with his pace. “I just feel like having some luck here catches me up a little bit. It takes a little pressure off
the spring. To capitalize here in Tucson makes me feel a lot better about my month of February.” Other winners at the $311,161 rodeo were all-around cowboy Sean Santucci ($6,838, steer wrestling and team roping), bareback rider Devan Reilly (171.5 points on two head), team ropers Zane Barnson/Cole Wilson (21.4 seconds on three head), saddle bronc rider Jade Blackwell (166.5 points on two head), tie-down roper Jake Pratt (32.7 seconds on three head), barrel racer Christine Laughlin (34.89 seconds on two head), and bull rider Dave Mason (147.5 points on two head).

Dental Issues and Weight Gain in Aged Horses
Equine odonotoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) is characterized by diseased dental structures and an overproduction of cementum on the exterior of teeth. Cementum is a calciferous material that normally covers the root of the tooth. As the disease progresses, teeth become inflamed and often infected, leading to severe dental problems, pain, and inappetence. EOTRH is generally diagnosed in horses over 15 years of age. Horses with EOTRH often have diseased or missing incisors, which can make grazing impossible, thus elevating the need for alternative forage sources. The diagnosis of EOTRH makes formulating a nutrition plan for horses difficult, but the goal of weight gain starts with a single premise: increase digestible energy needs to be greater than energy expenditure. When encouraging weight gain, it is important to make sure horses have adequate forage in front of them at all times. Horses require a minimum of 1.5-2% of their body weight in forage daily. Free-choice access to high-quality forage is the best way to maximize forage intake in the diet. Long-stem alfalfa (lucerne) is a good choice for underweight horses because of its higher protein and energy content. A soft, leafy alfalfa would likely work well for most horses with dental issues. Try to find hay that is loaded with leaves that are well anchored to stems, as leaves provide the most concentrated source of energy in a hay plant. Some clever horses with EOTRH become adept at grasping forage with their lips and then transferring it to the back of the mouth where it is ground by molars, bypassing the incisors, or front teeth, and avoiding potential pain. These horses tend to do well on long-stem forage, at least until the disease is in an advanced state. If, however, you notice that a horse has difficulty grasping hay or drops half-chewed hay from its mouth, then other forages are necessary.
MARCH 2018
1
Appropriate alternative forage sources include chaff, hay pellets, and hay cubes. Forage cubes and pellets can be offered, soaked if necessary. Horses with normal teeth will often use their incisors to break up hay cubes. Because horses with EOTRH sometimes have painful incisors, forage cubes, which tend to be hard and difficult to chew, may have to be soaked thoroughly, to the point of becoming mushy, before feeding. While most horses will readily eat soaked, or even watery, meals, some are more finicky than others. Owners of these horses may try concocting meals of different consistencies to satisfy their horses’ preferences. Having a bucket of soaked or dampened forage available at all times is ideal for underweight horses, though environmental conditions, namely heat and humidity, might make this difficult as these meals may spoil if not eaten in a timely fashion. The contribution of pasture to a horse’s diet depends on pasture quality and the ability of the horse to graze. Horses with EOTRH often have diseased or missing incisors, which can make grazing impossible, thus elevating the need for alternative forage sources. Once the forage component of the diet has been sorted, a highcalorie complete feed might be appropriate for horses with EOTRH. Complete feeds are designed to be fed in large amounts because they include easy-to-chew and especially digestible forage sources. These feeds are particularly useful for thin horses with dental problems. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations as to how much to feed each day. Divide the total amount into as many meals as possible, with the goal of three or four meals. In addition to the complete feed, adding vegetable oil or stabilized rice bran will boost calorie consumption. Make any changes to the diet gradually, typically over several days, to allow the horse to become accustomed to new feed ingredients.
