THE FIRST GUNFIGHTER FINALLY GETS HIS DUE He was born in Illinois in 1837 and emigrated to Kansas in 1856. When he was just a lad he told his sister he would someday do things that Kit Carson never dreamed of doing. He wore his hair long in the style of the mountain men and scouts, but James Butler Hickok made the bridge from scout to “the Civilizer,” and “Town Tamer.” He participated in a classic gunfight when he went up against Dave Tutt on the plaza at Springfield, Missouri, in 1865, shooting his assailant through the heart at 75 yards. Every gunfight in every Western stems from this one event. He was a golden young man who first became a frontier celebrity and then a legend. He commanded attention and admiration wherever he went. But the storied legend and life dovetailed into a tragic saga. Coming this fall, the long-awaited “Wild Bill Hickok: The First Gunfighter”By Bob Boze Bell. It’s about damn time!

SEPTEMBER 2017
In His Cups Wild Bill was a carouser and he loved to tell tall tales. There is an old saying on the frontier: “It takes two Easterners to believe one Westerner.” Hickok found that Easterner in George Ward Nichols who interviewed Hickok in Springfield, Missouri in 1865. Nichol’s subsequent article on “Wild Bill Hitchkock” (yes, it was misspelled) launched Wild Bill into legend and on into immortality.
Are You Satisfied? After his street duel with Dave Tutt, in 1865, Wild Bill allegedly turned to the crowd that had gathered on the plaza in Springfield, Missouri, and said, “Are you satisfied?” By all accounts, they were.
On Sale This Fall! The Age Of The Gunfighters While Wild Bill Hickok was being celebrated in Harper’s in 1867, for his various gunfights, here’s the age of his fellow classmates. • Wyatt Earp was nineteen. • Doc Holliday was fifteen. Billy the Kid, 8 years.
• John Wesley Hardin was fourteen.
• Billy the Kid was eight.
“The ‘Prince of Pistoleers’ meets the ‘Prince of Western History’ in this much anticipated new book from Bob Boze Bell— chock full of the great art, rare photos, authoritative history, and that unique dose of Boze whimsy that we have come to expect. More fun than any history book should be and a must have addition to every Western collection.” —Paul Andrew Hutton
• Tom Horn was seven. • Black Jack Ketchum was four. • Robert Leroy Parker (Butch Cassidy) was one.

Not yet since we just pushed Bryant just flipped another year older in the month of August! If you 110 at the end of August... BUT... To August's defense, pretty mild follow our Construction side on Facebook @ Imperial Enterprise Inc., you for AZ!! Storms backed off a little, and temps were as mild as I can seen him at his Birthday lunch flapping like a chicken, and waddling like a remember... August usually is pretty testing on people's moral duck bahaha.... YES.... I thoroughly enjoyed it!! Good stuff! Got to enjoy around here, but I didn't feel that this year... You? Might have been life! We also got to enjoy getting out of the heat for a little while in August, because, June tried to cook us, and July tried to wash us away.. building some fence in Forest Lakes... That too may be the reason August Made August feel mild... But that's not what's in the air! didn't seem so bad! Be sure to follow us and watch for our monthly barn How about them Friday night lights... The smell of that fresh cut specials right here in the Bridle and Bit, and on Imperialbarns.com! Click on our "Specials" page.... We'll continue to post projects as they complete grass... The sound of cheers from the crowd, and the whistle at on Facebook! Go like our page!!! the end of the play.... Blue forty two.... Hut Hut.... Omaha!!!!!! LOL!! Alright... Without further ado, or anymore of my rambling... Let’s do it!! Thank God football is back on, RIGHT? Now we got something to "Politics By A Dumb Cowboy"... I DID IT…. I went to the "Trump Rally"! watch on Sunday besides "The Pioneer Women", and "Dancing I put my social anxiety to the side for one night while Tracy laughed at with the Stars" during the week LOL.. Don't get me wrong!! I did me, and I went... Yes, I have "Social Anxiety"... Really big crowds are not learn some new moves, and few new recipes... It added to my my thing, believe it or not... I typically don't get along with leftist liberal spare tire though lol... But that's not what's in the air either!! tree huggers, who look at me and yell, "Yee freakin Haw".... I normally It's that smell... You know... That smell!! No, I didn't fart, and a then want to walk over there, and box their damn ears in... But that didn't fart goes BRONNGG!!! This sound is more like, FOOOOPPP.... happen! The same sound that an air compressed potato launcher makes! What did happen contrary to what you seen on the news is… A bunch The same sound a bouncing betty makes as it leaves its tube of supporters from all walks of life, color of skin, religion, and age... Well, we all were there to do the same thing! Show our support for our once the wick ignites the gun powder! You know what I'm talking President! IT BLEW ME AWAY.... Seriously!!! We stood and walked in about now??? It's the sound and smell of a pepper ball nailing your line with THOUSANDS of people for five miles, just trying to get in.. 3 crouch region, while live on National television for millions to see.... hours!!! And...., we still didn't get in!!! Yes….. We had tickets!! But, so did BAHAHA.... PRICELESS... everyone else! What supporters?? Or at least, that's what the media and Hello everyone! Justin here & Imperial! I'm sure you all seen the leftist (which now is pretty much all of government since he keeps that! If not, YouTube it! You have got to see it!! I'll chime in more pissing both sides off, stirring it up) wants us to believe!! about it, especially since Tracy and I were there at the Trump Since Tracy and I were there, we’ll tell the real story! One they don't Rally.!! You got to keep reading though.. Let me welcome you to want you to see or hear! Support!! Love!!! A group of multi races all getting September, and just thing, Fall is around the corner!!! Hang in along!! All getting behind the man who is single handedly taking on this there, it’s almost over... THANK GOD!!! corrupt Government, throwing fists every time he turns around, just to get Who watched the Conor McGregor fight?? I did!! Got invited to a buddie’s house, and a bunch of us watched it together... Any disappointment?? Not here! I thought it was a great fight! Of course, I was going for Conor the underdog... It would have been a fairytale fight!!! RIGHT??? But..., Mayweather prevailed! Reason he's the champ... Also, the reason he's undefeated in his career... But don't think Conor didn't pull his weight! He stepped into a ring for his “DEBUT” against the Champ! A complete different set of rules, and fighting style! It was a whole different realm, and it showed... The little punches to the back of the head, which I couldn't help but laugh... At one point, I thought he was going to hip check him, and take him to the ground... He clearly wanted to, and I kept yelling, screw it... Just do it ... He composed himself, and then he went 10 rounds!! Scored pretty even most of the fight, then the inexperience set in... For his first boxing match, much respect!! Much respect for Mayweather for flat out boxing him... That's why he's the Champ... Good fight!! Congratulations guys! Now go enjoy that business decision, and all of our money... Alright, what's been going on here @ Imperial... Sold a few trailers in August finally... We even got our first Frontier gone, which was the Warmblood... If you didn't get to see it, keep an eye out on the streets for it! Yes, I re-ordered but I've already sold that one too... So, I ordered two! Make sure you follow us on Facebook @ "Imperial Livestock Supply Inc., and have Imperialaz.com a favorite in your browser! That way you don't miss out! Word is, got a new steel line coming! That'll give the competition something to talk about... Beau and our "Trailer Techs" sure burnt some rubber in the month of August... Man, we sold a lot of trailer tires... Quite a few "Yearly's" too!! Either my preaching is sinking in, "Get them trailers in here", or MAYHEM has been having fun... Seems to me, people are paying more attention 18 18
this Country back to “WE THE PEOPLE”!! We even had a group of people from Iraq who walked with us!! You know who else was in this group?? A MARINE!! One who served in Iraq! There were no problems!! Now, if that’s not enough, this is also what I saw… I watched black man walking around with a sign that said EXACTLY what he was yelling, "ALL" lives matter, not just black lives matter"! I also watched him reach out to a white man, grab his hand, and proceed with a shoulder bump... Yeah man!!! That white man even had a cowboy hat on, believe it or not... I didn't see any Natzi's or KKK... I really didn't see any hate... There was one block corner where people were peacefully protesting which in the end, a few asses showed some hate... And.... One man will forever be remembered!!! The one who got shot while on NATIONAL TELEVISION in the "boys" for being a freakin idiot, and throwing things at the cops... The only thing controversial thru out the night was Trump mentioning, "Pardoning" Arpio! Do I agree with it... NO, I don't!! But I don't have to agree with everything Trump does! That's next month's article though... I can see Tracy now! Word limit.... Word limit... WORD LIMIT!!! You see people, don't let the mainstream media who's controlled by the swamp create the hate, and divide this Country! It's not Trump doing it... Don't believe me.... Well then, you go to one of his Rally's!! You go experience it!! You'll see firsthand just like I did, and Tracy did.. It will blow your mind!! Hell, I'll go with you just to experience it again!!! That's love for one’s Country!!! That's true "Patriotism"!! And... UNITED we stood!! TOGETHER!! You know that white man in the cowboy that did the shoulder bump with the Black man I mentioned before??? Well, you just got done reading his article! Shout out to Phoenix PD!!! Hell of a job!!!! As always, thanks for reading and coming along for the ride…#Keepgoing #Trump #Wherewithyou #Makeamericagreatagain #YouevengotGodbehindyou #Peoplearecomingout #Showlovenothate

Legacy Ranch Horse Sale Set for September 16th in Prescott
Thursday, August 17, 2017 The second annual Legacy Ranch Horse Sale is scheduled for Saturday, September 16, at 6:30 p.m. at the Prescott, Arizona, Rodeo Grounds. Once again, three of Arizona’s largest, most historic ranches – the K4 Ranch, Campwood Cattle Company, and O RO Ranch – have teamed up to present a unique offering of using horses carrying the brands of ranches
with over 300 combined years of tradition. The sale is being held in conjunction with Olsen’s Equifest Arizona, a three-day equine extravaganza that includes barrel racing, team roping, clinics, demonstrations, a trade show featuring 40 vendor booths, and more, all free to the public. The offering of 31 horses includes broke ranch horses, roping and ranch prospects, and broodmares. All have been raised by these traditional working cattle ranches on some of the roughest, rockiest country northern Arizona has to offer. “These horses are bred and trained to perform every job a big working ranch has to offer, and they are used daily,” says Rick Kieckhefer, manager of the K4 Ranch. “They are asked for a lot, and they give a lot. They are the backbone of our operations, and without them we could not be successful.” For more information, call 520/360-9524

DEL MAR, Calif. – A family connection led to a record purchase at Tuesday’s Barretts select yearling sale at Del Mar. Prominent owner Samantha Siegel paid $300,000 for a Californiabred filly by Bodemeister, the most expensive yearling purchased at a Barretts sale since the company was formed in 1990. Siegel owns the filly’s 2-year-old half-brother – Take the One O One, a colt by Acclamation who is scheduled to make his stakes debut in Sunday’s $100,000 Del Mar Juvenile Turf. Siegel bid on the Bodemeister filly through trainer Brian Koriner. “We’ve got the brother,” Koriner said. “She’s by Bodemeister, and he’s a hot stallion. We think Take the One O One will be a stakes horse.” The Bodemeister filly is out of the 9-year-old mare North Freeway, the winner of the 2012 Winter Melody Stakes at Delaware Park who earned $273,610.

and ride but a big percentage of them As we all are wishing and hoping for really do. a quick arrival at the third week of October, yes the third week. When My Mission Statement has been for the Arizona State Fair is going on, by Rocco Wachman years that we “ Build Horses that you somewhere in there will be the first could go to War on!” Which is very important but what I think more time we will consider reaching for our Vests and Jackets. A dear important is the second part of that statement which is, “And the friend of mine, God rest his soul Lloyd Bridwell informed of that Riders who can take them there!” The standard for a broke horse fact my first year in Arizona, when in September I was waiting used to be very much higher one hundred years ago and longer than for the weather to cool off. It didnt…… The best part of this time it is now. So without arguing methods or clinicians or disciplines I of year is that most people start coming out the air-conditioning simply want to share what little I know with who ever is interested. and start again to ride or attempt to ride their horses……… So I am, starting September 1st, 2017 going to offer my methods and practices, essentially what I do to produce a horse “You” could Please let me leave that “Train of Thought” for a bit and we go into War with. No tricks, gimmicks my will return later: I know many of my friends number one Ranch Horses carries an 85 and fans have heard about me moving year old woman out on trail by herself and back to town from a six year “Sabatical” in has done this for the last ten or so years Seven Springs. Myself, three dogs, seven without incident. I want to teach “You” sometimes eight horses and some of the how to accomplish this with your horse! most beautiful country I have ever seen. Contrary to popular belief, It`s not easy, It was a “Special Time” of my life that I will it`s not fast, you get back only what you always hold dear due to the history of the put in and it is all about you, not me. Ranch I was living, the Wildlife I spent my time with and the people who shared those So it is simple, teaching people, training most extraordinary days with me. Times I will horses with those people or teaching think of daily and never forget. Two things lessons on proven horses so at least prompted the move back: One was I needed you see and know what is possible on total replacement of both knees because of horseback. I have over the years been all the years that I had abused them and the fortunate enough to be training horses, recuperation was nearly impossible if I was providing livestock supervision for TV and by myself, not always having power, and no Movies right up to the 2008 Super Bowl cell phone service. Don’t get me wrong, with at University of Phoenix Stadium. Fox`s todays technology there where many offers coverage of the Game started with Howie from the Boss to install all needed technology. Long at our place in Rio Verde. We have I just figured that if I got all that stuff, what also had appearances on thirty-eight was the reason for living up there then? I did different TV Shows on eight separate not want to alter the way life was conducted Channels including six season of my own there after one hundred and forty-seven years Show on Country Music Television. What we do and how of its existence. The other reason was that even though ROCCO we do it has been featured on NBC`s Today Show, CBS I was “Living the Dream!” what was my absence from Sunday Morning, Good Morning America and I aint lying, civilization taking away from loved ones, Family, Son, and every major Newspaper/Magazine across the Nation. As the Real Grandchildren? Was my not being there with them not letting Estate Commercial states “Im not bragging, I’m applying for a job.” A them live their dreams as far as time with Papa and the Horses, job that I take very seriously and to great results………. the Lifestyle and Legacy? Hmmmm……. Long story short, I am living and working in Cave Creek. Both knees have been replaced and I am quickly coming to the end of my recoup. With that I had to decide what I wanted to do when I grow up. The most successful people I know still don’t know what they want to do either……….. I decided to go back to Training Horses, giving riding lessons and sharing the stuff I have been blessed to witness and learn. I realized upon my return to civilization that the horses I started, trained and worked with at the Ranch were so much better in the area of being broke, honest, forgiving or just plain brave than what I was witnessing in town. Not in a Horse Show, Performance Horse capacity but the kind of horses that people need to simply ride out and be comfortable with while having less of a chance of being injured. I cannot tell you how many people I see hand walking their horses on the side of the roads and yes I know not all of them want to get on 26
So if you are tired of hand walking your horse around the block, are frustrated about not getting the results you want and just plain scared or intimidated by your horse. Lets talk, cause this stuff is supposed to be fun and it isn`t when your mount is not as he or she should be.

About Us
Handlebar J, “Scottsdale’s Original Rib House” and saloon, is one of a kind; Herndon family owned and operated since 1975… (established in 1966.) Built in the early 1960s by “Wild Bill Byrd” the original name was “Wild Bill’s”. At that time there were only a few western style saloons in North Scottsdale, since then, all the others have come and gone. In the 60’s anything north of Lincoln blvd. were tumbleweeds, rattlesnakes, and cowboys. “Wild Bill’s” was a dancehall and honky-tonk that had live music, chicken wire in front of the stage and all! One of the regular performers was the then unknown Waylon Jennings. Waylon played clubs around Phoenix after moving from Lubbock Texas. Wild Bill hired and fired Waylon many times, so the story goes. A colorful character from Wild Bill’s days was “Mac the singin’ bartender”, and a good friend of Waylon’s. Mac told the story of one night at the bar (after a few cocktails) Wild Bill was demonstrating “the art” of twirling a gun…. he dropped the gun, the evidence remains in the inch deep bullet hole in the post on the dance floor, miraculously, no one was hurt! In around 1966, tax issues forced Wild Bill to sell. Locals Dick Campana and former Scottsdale cowboy mayor Herb Drinkwater came within days of purchasing the building, when a last minute change of plans made George (Handlebar mustache wearing) and Joannie (“J”) Lautz, (hence the name “Handlebar J”) the new owners. They had been managing the Lulu Belle restaurant in old town Scottsdale when the opportunity arose. Shortly after they bought HBJ, George, a consummate guitar player, hired bass-man and singer Brick Herndon to help him form a house band, the “Country Score” and the Handlebar J was up and runnin’. Still out in the middle of the sticks and tumbleweeds, they served up mouth waterin’ BBQ Ribs, Steaks, Burgers and great live music. In 1967 Brick’s wife Gwen went to work as a waitress at HBJ. Gwen had worked at the original Manuel’s Mexican food restaurant on 32nd street and Indian school for 6-7 years prior to going to work at HBJ. When Gwen moved to HBJ Manuel hated losing Gwen as she was always hard working and loyal, but she wanted to be with her husband, Brick. The Herndon’s worked with the Lautz’s for over 9 years, entertaining, feeding and bringing people together with that western style hospitality HBJ has always been known for. In approx. 1974, for personal reasons, the Lautz’s decided it was time to make some changes so they took the bar out. (The old bar is in The Hole in the Wall restaurant in Phoenix). Needless to say, that idea didn’t work, and the opportunity was handed to the Herndon’s to take over HBJ. Brick had always wanted his own restaurant and a place his 3 young boys could also perform. With the help of local contractor (and Gwen’s oldest brother) John “Jay” Lattimore and his wife Jennie, they put up the cash to put the Herndon’s in business. Handlebar J continued with a huge grand opening on September 15, 1975, Gwen and Brick were the new legacy of HBJ. Brick got sick in 1979 and lost his battle with cancer in 1981 at the young age of 58. Gwen almost single handedly kept HBJ going through it all, she kept it going, and it kept her going. Meanwhile, Ray, the youngest of their three boys bussed tables and learned many aspects of the business, until he started performing regularly on the HBJ stage with the Country Score band alongside his Uncle Mel Herndon (bass). Brothers Rick (drums) and Ron (piano) performed in the band on occasion as well. In 1986 Ray and Ron formed The Herndon Brothers band. The band brought a huge following of new-comers to the Handlebar J. Gwen managed staff, seated guests, and even cooked after the kitchen closed if needed, she did whatever was necessary to satisfy her guests, all the while enjoying working along side her boys in their family business. The love Gwen had for her boys was obvious to all, and she enjoy their music nightly. Ray Herndon’s involvement in country music has also contributed to HBJ’s visibility over the years as a member of Texas singer/songwriter Lyle Lovett’s Large Band since 1985, and as a principal member of the hit making MCA recording trio McBride and The Ride, in the 90s. Ron continued playing with The Herndon Brothers band, and held down the fort with Gwen. Handlebar J has hosted many celebrities over the years; Dick Van Dyke, Buster Crabbe, Matthew McConaughey, Huey Lewis, Jimmy Fallon, Lyle Lovett, Vince Gill, Toby Keith, Kris Kristofferson, James Hatfield, Jordan Sparks, Hank Williams Jr., Shooter and Waylon Jennings, many of whom have jumped on stage to sing with The Herndon Brothers on occasion. In 2003 and 2004, Jessi Colter and Ray hosted a couple shows at HBJ called “The Outlaw Connection” as a tribute to Waylon Jennings. At the latter, SIRIUS radio’s “Outlaw channel” was born and introduced LIVE from Handlebar J by “Little Steven” Van Zandt (from Bruce Springsteen’s band and The Sopranos). In 2007 Handlebar J and The Herndon family were inducted into the AMEHOF (Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame). The legacy continues… Handlebar J, “Scottsdale’s Original Rib House” is still known for our Bar-B-Q Ribs, Steaks, Burgers, Fish Fry, Corn on the Cob, Fried Chicken, Biscuits with honey and so much more, all made in house. Besides our good food, country music is a huge part of HBJ. But don’t be surprised if you hear various other styles of music from time to time, like blues, jazz or rock-n-roll. (Schedules are subject to change, so please call for information, or check our online calendar for information). Gwen Herndon is/was the life-force of Handlebar J, and the owner/operator for over forty unbelievable years. In 2017, Dementia/Alzheimer’s took Gwen from us. We will forever miss her physical presence, but Gwen and Brick are forever watching over us, and the incredible legacy they left for us to enjoy. Hats off to you, our guests for your continued support of this one of a kind treasure…. We hope to see y’all real soon at “Gwen’s” Handlebar J. The Herndon’s 30

Kathleen S. Swigart v. Carl Bruno
Court of Appeal, Fourth Appellate District 8 Cal.App.5th, 529 (June 22, 2017)

On March 3, 2012, plaintiff Kathleen Swigart and defendant Carl Bruno participated in a fiftymile endurance horseback riding event with 47 other riders in Perris, California. Both Swigart and Bruno were experienced endurance riders. Video of the event showed that Swigart and Bruno were riding in the lead pack of seven riders. Swigart rode towards the front of the group and Bruno towards the rear. During the ride there were multiple times when the horses bumped into the backs of the horses in front of them. At the eight mile checkpoint, Swigart dismounted. While she was on the ground, Bruno’s horse contacted the horse in front of it, causing that horse to kick Bruno’s horse. Bruno’s horse then bolted, throwing Bruno onto Swigart, causing her injury. Swigart sued Bruno and alleged negligence and gross negligence. Bruno filed a motion for summary judgment, which was granted by the trial court based on the primary assumption of the risk doctrine. Swigart then appealed. On appeal, Swigart argued that endurance horseback riding was not inherently risky and that Bruno was negligent because he followed too closely behind the horse immediately in front of him which resulted in her injury. Swigart also argued that Bruno’s actions were grossly negligent because he had continued to ride too closely despite several warnings by other riders on the trail. Bruno argued that endurance riding is an inherently risky sport. The activity is characterized as a demanding sport by the American

Endurance Riding Conference. Bruno asserted that because of the nature of the activity Swigart was barred from recovering damages and that the trial court was correct when it granted Bruno’s motion for summary judgment. The Court of Appeal affirmed the trial court’s decision, finding that the primary assumption of the risk doctrine is an affirmative defense to negligence claims arising from injury accidents that occur during inherently dangerous such as horseback riding. The doctrine recognizes that certain dangers are often integral to an activity and defendants generally have no duty to protect a plaintiff from such risks. The doctrine is commonly applied to sporting events. Many sport contests involve rigorous physical activities and injuries are common. The doctrine bars participants from suing each other for injuries that arise during the sport unless they are inflicted intentionally. Upon their review of the video evidence, the Court noted that “tailgating” frequently occurred when the horses were on sloped terrain, and all of the horses did it several times. Since all of the horses continually did this, the Court found that the risk of its occurrence was inherent to the sport. Horses are by their nature unpredictable and difficult to control. This fact, combined with the inherent dangers of horseback riding, especially in an endurance contest, relieved Mr. Bruno from any liability for his horse’s conduct. Swigart assumed the risk of injury by choosing to participate in the event.
COMMENT This case affirms the trial court’s decision that an endurance horseback riding event is inherently dangerous, justifying an assumption of the risk affirmative defense. This case follows a long line of decisions that uphold that one assumes the risk for any type of horseback riding. For a copy of the complete decision, see: Swigart v. Bruno

Tough AQHYA World Championship Show in Oklahoma City. Nearly 800 young exhibitors from 42 states, two Canadian provinces, Costa Rica and Luxembourg qualified and participated at the Ford Youth World. You had to be there to appreciate the intensity on their faces, the frayed nerves and churning gut that come with the investment of countless hours of work, effort and energy driving them all to improvement. It’s also worth mentioning the number of adults at the show as youth
advisers, helping these young people grow. I want to say thank you to all of those adult leaders who make this journey possible for so many of our youth. I particularly want to recognize a group of people who donated at least six hours of professional coaching in the covered outdoor arena. Margaret Duflock of California and Brazos Valley Equine Hospital of Stephenville, Texas, donated cattle for practice sessions, and some of the very best in our working cow horse world (Todd Crawford, Sam and Pam

Craig Huffhines Rose, Lee Keaton, Robert Smith, Darren Miller and Kim Lindsey) were on hand to teach these young people the art of the cow horse. The members of AQHYA are our future, and I would like to challenge the entire organization to think about the ways we can get more young people involved in our Quarter Horse world. We need to think broadly about how we can better use our American Quarter Horse Foundation as a fuel source for developing new young leaders for our industry. What a privilege it has been to see Team AQHA run this event and the first-class work that our judges, scribes, stewards and ring crew did to put on this major event. Recording a final time of 17:452 over 350 yards in the Lewis Wartchow Stakes, Painted Turnpike bested a field of five earning $8,460. Dashin JJ finished second a length-and-ahalf behind, and CRM Radio Flyer was third. The victory surged Painted Turnpike’s lifetime earning to $363,872, overtaking the No. 1 spot on the lifetime leaders list from the legendary Got Country Grip. Got Country Grip, a 2003 bay solid gelding by Country Quick Dash and out of Got A Grip, amassed $361,881 over his racing career. The gelding earned five consecutive World Champion Solid Paint-Bred racing titles from 2005–2009 and was the lifetime leading money earning Paint Horse for more than a decade. Painted Turnpike was the first horse to sweep the Speedhorse Triple Crown by winning all three G1 Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Futurity races in 2015. He was crowned as APHA’s 2015 and 2016 World Champion Running Solid Paint-Bred, along with earning four other year-end champion racehorse titles. Owned and bred by Nolan Pevehouse of Webbers Falls, Oklahoma, Painted Turnpike is a 2013 bay solid stallion by PYC Paint Your Wagon (QH) out of the Royal Quick Flash mare High Class Turnpike. Trained by Matt Whitekiller, Painted Turnpike has been piloted by jockey Cody Smith in all 20 of his starts, garnering a record of 17 wins and three seconds in 20 starts. ProRodeo Hall of Fame inducts TheraPlate Ambassador Charmayne James into 2017 Class
Colorado Springs, CO (August 24, 2017) —The first Saturday of August in 2017, August 5, went down in the history books of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) as the day their members were inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame for the first time. Highlighting WPRA’s inaugural class was 11-time world champion Charmayne James along with 32-time world champion Wanda Bush and a joint PRCA/WPRA equine inductee Star Plaudit “Red”. The ladies joined Randy Corley, a 12-time PRCA Announcer of the Year, and five world champions that help make-up the historic 12-member 2017 induction class. Corley, along with gold buckle winners including the late Buck Rutherford (all-around, 1954), Enoch Walker (saddle bronc riding, 1960), Tommy Puryear (steer wrestling, 1974), Mike Beers (team roping, 1984) and Cody Custer (bull riding, 1992), were enshrined with rodeo notable Bob Ragsdale, a 22-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier in three events. Also inducted into the Hall were four-time bareback horse of the year, Christensen Bros.’ Smith & Velvet, and the committee for the Ogden (Utah) Pioneer Days. James may have had to wait 22 years to join her legendary horse, Scamper, in the ProRodeo Hall of Fame, but was ecstatic to be a part of this historic class. “I finally get to join him (Scamper), and that’s emotional,” said James, who now makes her home in Boerne, Texas. “Today is really a big deal, not only for me, my family, but I think for all the barrel racers of the WPRA. I couldn’t be more proud and humbled to be one of the first inductees as one of the barrel racers.” James, who grew up in Clayton, N.M., the home of the very first barrel
racing National Finals Rodeo in 1959, won the first of 10 consecutive world titles at the youthful age of 14 in 1984. James was the first WPRA member to wear the coveted No. 1 back number in 1987, and became the first barrel racer to cross the $1 million mark in career earnings. In addition to the 10 consecutive world titles (1984-1993), James and Scamper won the NFR average title six times (1984, 1986-87, 1989-90 and 1993). In 1996, Scamper became the first and only barrel horse (until 2017) to be inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. James would add a cherry on top of her illustrious career, returning to the top of the sport aboard Cruiser (Cruisin on Six) in 2002, winning her 11th world title and seventh NFR average title. “My mom traveled a million miles with me and my whole family sacrificed, so this induction is not just about me, but also your family and friends,” James said. “The horses along the way, I couldn’t have been here without the great horses. Obviously, Scamper was a godsend. This is just like icing on the cake getting up here today and accepting this honor.” With the 2017 class, the ProRodeo Hall of Fame now has enshrined 259 people, 33 animals and 28 rodeo committees. The WPRA, headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colo., provides opportunities for women across the United States and Canada to compete in the timed events of barrel racing, team roping, breakaway roping, and tie-down roping, and is the oldest women’s sports organization in the country. The Association started in 1948 with 38 Texas ranch women banding together to create the very first professional sports association created solely for women by women – the Girls Rodeo Association (GRA). The GRA began with 74 original members with 60 approved contests with a total payout of $29,000. In 1981, the GRA changed its name to the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA). Today, it is a computerized association with more than 3,000 members, over 1,200 events and payouts totaling over $4.8 million. For more information on the WPRA and a list of events visit www.wpra.com. TheraPlate Revolution applauds the honor for James and is thrilled to have her on the company’s team of outstanding ambassadors. TheraPlate Revolution offers therapy platforms with a wealth of benefits for both horses and their human teammates. To learn more about how the innovative TheraPlate can improve horses’ health, or to arrange a no-obligation demo, visit www. theraplate.com or call toll-free (800) 920-3685 or direct (817) 629-5171.

From a wooden kitchen table and a handful of registrations to becoming the world’s second-largest equine breed association, APHA and the Paint Horse breed enjoys its current position of prominence thanks to the visionary efforts of the great horsemen and Paint Horses who came before us. To be inducted into the APHA Hall of Fame requires a lifetime of achievement and a legacy that has impacted the association and the breed. Without fail, inductees worked in their own ways to champion the Paint Horse and made a lasting impact for future generations. The honored inductees of the 2017 APHA Hall of Fame class are:

Each year, NRHA members are given the opportunity to nominate and elect representatives to serve on the NRHA Executive Committee and Board of Directors. The final deadline to nominate candidates passed on August 2, so a complete slate of candidates now can be presented to the membership for consideration. Votes in this year’s election (October 1 – November 1) will determine the names of: Two members to serve on the Executive Committee as a DirectorAt-Large One member per region to serve as a North American Regional Director (On a rotational basis, approximately half of the regions have this opportunity each year) Eligible voting members will receive voting information via email prior to October 1.
DIRECTOR-AT-LARGE CANDIDATES Each voting member will be given the opportunity to cast a vote for two Director-At-Large candidates. The candidate receiving the largest number of votes will have a two-year term, and the second-largest votegetter will have a one-year term. Four members were nominated by the NRHA Nominating / Governance Committee: Shane Brown, George King, Brian Welman and Joe Wolfe. An additional candidate, Tom McCutcheon, was nominated via the write-in process. Therefore, a total of five candidates are campaigning for member votes.
The Candidates Are Set – NRHA Elections of our prosperity in that we now have 24 NRHA Million Dollar Riders, two of which are non pros; we have 36 NRHA Million Dollar Sires and several that have turned over nine million dollars.
Shane Brown Elbert, Colo.
Brian Welman
“As a member of many NRHA committees and positions, currently and in the past, I am excited to be considered for an NRHA Executive Committee position. I look forward to becoming even more involved in programs that help to grow NRHA from the grass roots level at the Affiliates to my ongoing dedication to the Professional and non pro members at the trainer/ breeder/owner level. I am an active, dedicated NRHA non pro coach so it is important to me to continue the upward track that NRHA has established, taking all members into consideration. I would be honored to be a participant and pledge to be an active, productive member of the NRHA Executive Committee to help NRHA meet its goals for 2018.”
NORTH AMERICAN DIRECTOR CANDIDATES North American Director elections will be held for the Northeast region featuring Kelly Hedges and Heather Powell. Only one candidate was nominated for the other four regions. Therefore, no elections will be held for these regions and these candidates will be elected by acclamation: East Central – Brett Walters, North Central – Larry Handley, Northwest – Jeanine Kern and South Central – Ann Salmon Anderman.

“In 1989, we bought a horse that we thought did tricks. A few weeks later we saw Richie Fisher giving a reining demonstration at Belmont Park Horse Fair and the “penny dropped.” I was introduced to trainer J.C. Daudelin from Quebec and started to learn about reining, ably assisted by our mare “April.” It has been a passion for me and the horses and people have kept me actively involved in the sport as an exhibitor (when the trainers let me have my horses back!), owner, breeder, judge, show secretary and steward since my first show at Willowbrook also in 1989.

About Aaron Watson:
“I’ve played rodeos and in Vegas many times, but I’m really excited to add an iconic event like PBR World Finals,” Watson said. “The boys and me have been tearing it up on the road all over the world to support my new album Vaquero, and there’s nothing we enjoy more than playing our brand of country music and putting COWBOY back in country music! PBR in Vegas is definitely a great place for that, and Flint Rasmussen has been a great friend for years so I’m excited to always see him when our paths cross on the road. It’s awesome that we get to add this event to ‘firsts’ this year that include Rodeo Houston, San Antonio Rodeo, and just playing Calgary Stampede with Brooks & Dunn.” Aaron Watson continues to dominate as a true independent in the country music arena. Watson’s newest release and highly-anticipated album Vaquero launched into the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart with his biggest career sales to date, and at #2 on the Top Country Albums chart. Texas Monthly, Billboard, Rolling Stone Country, Noisey, CMT, The Boot and more have all featured the new music. Vaquero is the follow continued on page 72

AQHA Year-End Awards Celebration
The American Quarter Horse Association is moving the year-end awards banquet to November in Oklahoma City.
The 2017 Annual Awards Banquet recognizing the year-end high-point winners is being moved from the 2018 AQHA Convention to during the 2018 Lucas Oil AQHA World Championship Show in Oklahoma City. “We feel holding this awards presentation as a separate event will allow us to appropriately celebrate these exhibitors and horses for their hard work and dedication to win the top honor of being named an AQHA year-end high-point winner,” said AQHA Executive Vice President Craig Huffhines. “This move was based on exhibitor input and a desire to have the greatest participation during this very significant awards celebration." AQHA conducted a survey this spring to determine if open and amateur year-end high-point winners would prefer to modify the current awards banquet to better showcase the Association’s top athletes. The survey was sent to the 2014, 2015 and 2016 open, amateur and Equestrians With Disabilities high-points, in addition to the Justin Boots Intermediates and exhibitors of the year. “We feel it is important to regularly evaluate our programs to make sure we’re providing the best service possible to our members and customers,” Huffhines explained. Overall, the survey, which had an excellent response rate of 44 percent, showed that high-point winners would prefer the banquet to be held later in the year to ensure the winners had enough time to plan to attend and make travel arrangements. Due 72
to the quick turnaround between the Association’s compilation of year-end award winners and the March annual convention dates, previous award winners felt there was not enough time to make travel plans and take vacation from work to attend this banquet to accept an award they had worked hard to earn. After compiling the data, the information was presented to the AQHA Executive Committee at its July 2017 meeting with various suggestions by the convention planning committee. Based on the survey results, the Executive Committee agreed it was time for a change. AQHA will present the awards in November 2018 in Oklahoma City during the Lucas Oil World to the 2017 open, amateur, Equestrians With Disabilities year-end high-point winners. At the banquet, AQHA will also recognize the Markel Insurance AQHA All-Around Youth, AQHA All-Around Amateur, AQHA All-Around Junior Horse, AQHA All-Around Senior Horse, Most Valuable Professional, Professional Horsewoman of the Year and the Don Burt Professional Horseman of the Year. More details about the awards celebration will be released at a later date. The 2017 racing year-end highpoint winners will be recognized in January 2018 at the Racing Champions Ceremony at Heritage Place in Oklahoma City. The 2017 youth year-end high-point winners will continue to be recognized during the Parade of Teams at the 2018 Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show. For more information on AQHA year-end high-points, visit www.aqha. com/highpoints.
up to his history-making album The Underdog, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart, making him the first-ever independent, male country artist to debut in the coveted top spot. Watson’s rise has been paved by years of hard work and perseverance. Eighteen years later, over a dozen recorded albums and more than 2,500 shows in the U.S. and Europe, the Texas native is determined to stay true to his roots and deliver music directly to his fans. Watson shared his journey with fans via a video that has racked up over 7 Million views and 50,000 shares, proving his phenomenal connection to fans, watch HERE.
About Joe Nichols:
As multi-platinum recording artist Joe Nichols began work on a new batch of old-school country music, he found himself looking back for inspiration. From 2002’s Man With a Memory on, Nichols harnessed that passion as a steady hit maker, racking up six No. 1’s and eight Top 10s, including chart-topping modern classics like “Brokenheartsville” and “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off.” He’s a four-time GRAMMY nominee, an ACM, Billboard, CMA, and CMT Award winner, and his last album offering, Crickets, kept the success going, with “Yeah” and “Sunny and 75” achieving Platinumcertified No. 1 status. Nichols’ strong connection to singers like Merle Haggard, Marty Robbins, Don Williams, Keith Whitley and George Strait would inform his whole career. With Never Gets Old, Nichols sang with the most feeling possible and let whatever came out of his soul land on the record. The 12 tracks bound between spirit and sentiment, courage and cleverness, romance and rowdy fun, all wrapped in the throwback style he’s spent a lifetime pursuing. About Night Ranger: With more than 17 million albums sold worldwide and over 3,000 live shows performed, Night Ranger has both epitomized and transcended the arena rock sound and style. Night Ranger has earned widespread acclaim, multi-platinum and gold album status, leaving its mark on the music charts with a string of best-selling albums (Dawn Patrol, Midnight Madness, 7 Wishes, Big Life and Man In Motion) and instantly recognizable hit singles and signature album tracks such as “Sister

Christian,” “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me,” “When You Close Your Eyes,” the anthemic “(You Can Still) Rock In America,” “Sentimental Street,” “Goodbye,” “Sing Me Away,” “Four in the Morning” and more. About Shinedown: Shinedown is known to PBR fans for their dirt-slinging arena anthem featured on PBR on CBS broadcasts throughout the 2016 season. The band has released multiple albums including Leave a Whisper (2003), Us and Them (2005), The Sound of Madness (2008), Amaryllis (2012), and Threat to Survival (2015). On their latest album, Threat to Survival, Shinedown veer away from that densely layered sonic palette and take a more direct approach. Featuring lead single “Cut the Cord,” a blistering track that shot to #1 on Active Rock radio, the album finds the multiplatinum-selling band achieving its most powerful sound ever in its most important album to date. About WARRANT: Formed in 1984 in Hollywood, Calif., WARRANT has sold over 10 million albums. The band first came into the national spotlight with their Double Platinum debut album Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich, with the single, "Heaven," reaching No. 1 in Rolling Stone and No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band’s success continued in the early 1990s with the Double Platinum album Cherry Pie, which provided the hit album titled song and music video. The band’s other hit singles include “Down Boys,” “Sometimes She Cries,” “I Saw Red,” “Uncle Tom's Cabin,” and “Sex Ain’t Love.” WARRANT has recorded PBR’s new party anthem, a foot-stomping remake of Merle Haggard’s classic, “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink,” along with a music video featuring the band, top riders and bulls. The band has performed along the PBR circuit, including live in Tacoma during the Built Ford Tough Series event.
About Ryan Weaver:
Ryan Weaver, the voice of PBR’s Celebrate America initiative, is a highenergy, all-American, rockin’ country music artist who proudly served as an active duty Blackhawk Helicopter Pilot, Chief Warrant Officer 3, in the United States Army. Weaver began his career in country music while still on active duty, playing the club and festival circuit throughout the southeast.

DODGE CITY, Kan. - For the Etbauer’s, there’s a bright light budding underneath the cover of the family tree. Saddle bronc rider Shade Etbauer managed to stay hot on the rodeo trail, as his 170-point two-head score netted the 23-year-old $4,926 in winnings. Settling into his groove as the rodeo progressed, Etbauer narrowly edged away from second-place bronc riders Wade Sundell and Jacobs Crawley by a single point. For the young Oklahoman, walking away from the Dodge City Roundup as champion was special.
Shade Etbauer powers through at Dodge City
“I’m just really excited to be able to win,” Etbauer said. “This is a rodeo I’ve always tried to win. My dad won it, and my uncles always did really good at it. I’m just glad to check it off the list.” The 41st running of the Dodge City Roundup provided Etbauer a chance to digest the raucous southwestern Kansas atmosphere. “It was awesome,” Etbauer said. “The crowd was amazing. there with all of the top guys in the world - and being able to compete against them - gets your adrenaline going.” Sunday’s final performance in Dodge City was comprised of a total of 34 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER qualifiers. Undeterred by the star power in the field, Etbauer channeled the energy in Dodge City Roundup Rodeo Arena into a pair of solid rides. “The horse I got on in the first round was really nice,” he said. “Just a real nice horse from Harry Vold, got lucky enough and made it back to the short round.” “Then I got on Medicine Woman of Frontier Rodeo, and that was the first time I’ve ever been on her and she’s been Horse of the Year I don’t know how many times. Just to be able to get on that caliber of horse is amazing. It’s really fun to be able to compete on her and do good.” Knowing the reputation that a horse like Medicine Woman brings, Etbauer did all he could to remain calm and collected with the four-time PRCA Saddle Bronc Horse of the Year drawn in the final round. “The horse was really strong,” Etbauer explained. “I knew I just had to keep gassing her and keep going at it. I was just trying to do my best and it worked out for me.” Ranked 26th in the WEATHER GUARD® PRCA World Standings as of August 1, Etbauer is confident this win can compound good fortune down the final stretch of his first PRCA season. “It helps me out a lot,” Etbauer said. “I’m trying to win Rookie of the Year, and I’m hopefully trying to get to the Finals. But just to be able to go there and win that rodeo and that much money helps me out a lot. “It makes me want to keep pushing on.”

The horse should be well-broke, relaxed, quiet, soft and cadenced at all gaits. The horse should be ridden on a relatively loose rein with light contact and without requiring undue restraint. and yield to contact. The ideal ranch rail horse should have a natural head carriage at each gate. In all gaits, movement of the ranch rail pleasure horse should simulate a horse needing to cover long distances, softly and quietly, like that of a working ranch horse. This class should show the horse’s ability to work at a forward, working speed while under control by the rider. Light contact should be rewarded and horse shall not be shown on a full drape of reins. The overall manners and responsiveness of the horse while performing the maneuver requirements and the horse’s quality of movement are the primary considerations. Ranch horse riding is offered for horses three years of age and older, and is offered as an all-age divisions class. The Ranch Horse confirmation is judged based on a working ranch horse. The judge will be looking for a balanced, structurally correct horses with adequate muscling Ranch Trail will have obstacles found in everyday work on the ranch. Pain relief for your horse. Neprofin is a revolutionary new pain treatment for the alleviation of lameness in horses. Originally formulated to work on the same scientific principles as NSAID’s and phenylbutazone (bute), these enzymes have since proven effective on sprains, fractures, rheumatoid arthritis and osterarthritis. Neprofin assists with tissue repair, reduces fluid formation, accelerates the healing process and can be adopted as a replacement therapy in pathological conditions.

This mare has an old injury to the lateral side of her right front cannon bone, with deep scarring. There was extensive soft tissue damage which restricted her movement, causing a shortness of stride. This image shows visible enlargement of the soft tissue injury by its heat signature from recurrent inflammation. Note that the right leg is visibly larger than the left leg.
Following 8 weeks of Neprofin administration, this mare showed a marked improvement. Heat signatures have returned to normal, showing virtually no signs of inflammation or pain. Neprofin was able to digest and eliminate the inflamed scar tissue mass, which had caused lameness and a shortened stride. Note that both legs are now identical in size and shape. The mare is now sound and bears weight evenly on both front legs.

Internal parasites remain important health concerns for horses in all corners of the globe. In younger horses, roundworms (Parascaris spp.) can cause colic, ill thrift, and dull hair coats. Older horses, however, are primarily infested with cyathostomins, known more commonly as small strongyles. In fact, almost 100% of horses, regardless of how well they

are managed, have cyathostomins. Knowing which species of cyathostomins infect horses could provide more information about their life cycle and how they develop resistance to chemical dewormers. While you may think that there is only one “type” of small strongyles, a recent study* indicated that there are actually 50 different species of cyathostimins capable of infecting horses. More importantly, an individual horse can be parasitized with as many as 15 different species at a time. Why does this matter, you ask? After all, you can just dash off to the local tack shop or even shop online to purchase a dewormer and poof! Problem solved, right? Wrong. Three major classes of dewormers (anthelmintics) for horses currently exist, and cyathostomins affecting horses have already developed resistance to two of the three: benzimidazoles (e.g., fenbendazole) and pyrantel. This leaves the macrocytic lactones (e.g., moxidectin) as the proverbial “last man standing.” Experts believe that resistance will

also develop against this latter class, leaving owners and veterinarians with no effective chemical dewormers for treating this ubiquitous class of parasite. Knowing which species of cyathostomins infect horses could provide more information about their life cycle and how they develop resistance to chemical dewormers. “In lieu of relying on chemical dewormers to single-handedly control internal parasites in horses, owners are encouraged to implement other control measures such as pasture management,” advised Catherine Whitehouse, M.S., a nutrition advisor for Kentucky Equine Research (KER). She added, “While there are no proven ‘natural’ means of effectively deworming horses, ensuring optimal nutrition and health certainly helps horses build natural immunity to parasites.” “In addition, KER offers two products, the marine-derived fish oil product EO•3 and Nano•E, a watersoluble vitamin E product, that help boost your horse’s immune system,” Whitehouse advised.

Further, harvesting stem cells derived from fetal tissues does not involve an invasive procedure and can be used immediately in sick foals or saved for later use.For example, from where should stem cells be harvested, bone marrow or adipose tissue? Should stem cells be cultured, should a commercial kit be used so that stem cells can be injected quickly into the horse, or should a combination of both be employed? Would fetalderived stem cells be a better option? “Stem cell therapy has become a common treatment modality for a variety of musculoskeletal injuries in horses, including bowed tendons. Injuries to the superficial digital flexor tendon, among others, are notoriously challenging to heal, require months of lay-up, and are prone to reinjury. Stem cell research suggests improved healing rates and decreased chances of reinjury following therapy rather than relying on rest and rehabilitation alone,” explained Catherine Whitehouse, M.S., a nutrition advisor for Kentucky Equine Research (KER) in Versailles, Kentucky. In human medicine, many parents elect to “bank” stem cells from fetal tissues at the time of birth. Still not as popular in the equine industry, one recent study* shows that stem cells derived from fetal tissues rather than an older horse’s own bone marrow or adipose tissue might, in fact, be more effective when treating an injury. In their publication, the researchers reported that stem cells derived from amniotic membranes or the material contained within the umbilical cord, referred to as Wharton’s jelly, had beneficial properties compared with bone or adipose-derived adult stem cells. “The stem cells from fetal tissues are intermediate between embryonic and adult cells, and they appear to have an improved ability over adult stem cells to spur the development of a variety of tissue types, such as bone and cartilage,” Whitehouse said. Further, harvesting stem cells derived from fetal tissues does not involve an invasive procedure and can be used immediately in sick foals or saved for later use, such as the management of musculoskeletal conditions later in life. “Another way of protecting a horse’s musculoskeletal system is through the prophylactic administration of oral joint health supplements containing glucosamine, chondroitin, omega-3 fatty acids, and hyaluronic acid,” advised Whitehouse. “KER offers products containing each of these key ingredients that can help protect joints and soft tissues from injury and slow the progression of osteoarthritis.”

As part of this prestigious competition, Ireland’s President Michael Higgins awarded the U.S. team the prestigious Aga Kahn Trophy for the seventh time and the first for an all-female U.S. team. Lauren Hough, Lillie Keenan, Kraut, and Beezie Madden represented the U.S. and finished on zero faults. Together, they accumulated six clear rounds, while Kraut and Hough secured two out of the four double clear rounds in the competition. four riders were unbelievable today; they were aware of the pressure, but as great riders do, they rose to the occasion.” Heading into the competition, the U.S. knew they faced one of the most difficult Nations Cup courses. However, they rode through with ease. In the first round, Hough (Wellington, Fla.) and Ohlala, The Ohlala Group’s

This allowed them to drop Madden (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and Darry Lou’s four fault score. The U.S. sat tied with home team Ireland on zero faults, while France and The Netherlands followed with one and two faults, respectively, after the first round. The Netherlands’ first two combinations went clear adding pressure on the U.S. Following three combinations, the U.S. held the lead thanks to clear rounds from Hough and Madden. With The Netherlands’ resting on a two-fault total and France on a five faults, it came down to Kraut who had to jump with four faults or less. With an incredible clear round, she clinched the historic victory for the U.S. This is the second consecutive year that horses from Barb Roux’s St. Brides Farm have produced double-clear rounds in Dublin. Cavalia, a 10-year-old KWPN mare, did it last year.

Lexington, Ky. Sweeping across the Gulf Coast of Texas as a Category 4 hurricane over the past weekend, Hurricane Harvey’s catastrophic flooding has put the Houston and surrounding area equine community in a state of distress. Declared a major disaster and weather event, hundreds of horses and livestock have been affected. Banding together as a community, emergency rescues, fellow equestrian’s opening up their barns for shelter and extensive veterinary care has been required over the last several days. As the rain continues to fall, rising flood waters will make extended care for displaced large and small animals on an ongoing need. The Arizona Fall Championship Has Got Things Covered
The Arizona Fall Championship rolls into WestWorld in Scottsdale, AZ a little earlier on the show calendar for 2017 with dates of September 20 through 24. The show takes full advantage of the fantastic expansion of WestWorld facilities by holding most classes indoors or under cover.
The All Around and rail classes will be held in the North Hall’s two climate controlled arenas. Spacious, bright, and outfitted with excellent footing, these arenas were a big hit with exhibitors at Sun Circuit in March. Cow horse, Roping, Reining and Ranch Riding will show next door in the Equidome, with its indoor warm-up paddock and ample spectator seating. The AzFC also offers its full slate of VRH classes under the shade of covered arena 5A. On Friday, that arena becomes a practice pen for cattle fence work. The 2016 AzFall Championship saw an explosion of entries over the prior year. Organizers took that into account designing this year’s schedule so that great show days do not turn into long nights. The schedule also benefits Youth exhibitors with those busy school schedules. All Youth classes will be held Friday through Sunday. The AzFC is known as “The Show For Everyone”. The show has been committed to welcoming all levels of exhibitor, and creating an environment that is simultaneously first-class, fun, and exhibitor friendly. No matter your level of expertise, there is a level in which to show, and great rewards for winning. Scottsdale Performance Saddles sponsored by Scottsdale Western World will be given to the Non Pro High Point champs in Level 1, Level
2 and in Level 3. Classes that will be counted for these awards include the appropriate level or age division of showmanship, horsemanship, western pleasure, and halter or performance halter. The coveted Championship bronze horse trophies will be awarded once again in all AQHA classes that show to 6 judges. Logo outerwear will be awarded to 2nd through 5th places in each Circuit.
The enthusiasm for Versatility Ranch Horse classes at the Fall Championship has steadily grown, as have the offerings. AzQHA CEO and show producer Doug Huls is adamant about promoting VRH on an equal footing with the traditional roster of AQHA show classes as a way to expand the overall interest in the AQHA show experience. Accordingly, Ranch classes will be presenting first-rate awards as well. VRH Trail and VRH Conformation exhibitors will show to six judges with Circuit Champions receiving bronze trophies and 2nd through 5th place circuit awards. Ranch exhibitors also have a shot at one of two awesome saddle awards. The All Around Open Ranch Champion will be awarded a Leson Classic Saddle sponsored by Leson Saddles. Classes that can be counted for this award include VRH Trail, Ranch Riding, Ranch on the Rail, VRH Conformation and Open Halter or Open Performance Halter classes. The Amateur All Around Ranch Champion will receive a Jeff Smith saddle. Points from Amateur VRH Trail, Ranch Riding, Ranch on the Rail, VRH Conformation and Amateur Halter or Performance Halter classes will be tallied for that award. A big draw year after year at the AzFC has been the Cattle classes. This year there will
be AQHA Cutting as well as VRH cutting, and two slates of NRCHA and AzRCHA approved will run concurrent with AQHA Cow Horse classes. Open, Amateur and Youth Ropers will have their turn in the Equidome as well. Several NSBA Futurities await exhibitors this year. There will be a 2 year old Open Western Pleasure, 3 year old Open Western Pleasure, 3 year old Non Pro Western Pleasure, 2 year old Open Hunter under Saddle, 3 year old Open Hunter under Saddle and 3 year old Non Pro Hunter under Saddle. There will also be a 3 &4 Year old Trail Futurity. One of the highlight special events will be the #13 USTPC Trail Challenge on Friday September 22 sponsored by Holly Hover and Chas Roberts Air Conditioning. This team event builds camaraderie pairing amateur and pro riders, often from across barns, in a highly spirited, supportive environment. There is a 100% payback along with added money, and a guarantee of $1,000 to the winning team. Payouts will be made in two tiers, and there is a judges’ choice ride off. Interested riders should contact Holly Hover. She will even help novice trail exhibitors find a perfect partner. The Arizona Quarter Horse Association will offer an Interscholastic Championship Invitational for AzQHYA and IEA members at the 2017

Arizona Fall Championship show. There will be three classes of Horsemanship and one Reining class for 6th- 8th grade students. Additionally, there will be four classes of horsemanship and two reining classes for 9th-12th grade students. Each of the 10 classes will award $1000 worth of scholarships. AzQHA will also be awarding another $5,000 worth of scholarships in honor of Joe and Suzy Jeane at the show. These scholarships will be awarded to AzQHYA members who will be interviewed at the show. Be sure to check AzQHA.org for details on the Joe and Suzy Jeane scholarships and more information on the ASCENT Scholarship program. Many thanks to Dr. Joni Hegel for sponsoring the AzQHYA scholarships! The show’s legendary GiveAways enhance its reputation for fun. The Prize Patrol is already hard at work devising interesting challenges for a treasure trove of goodies. From riding challenges to trivia challenges, from hard luck exhibitor awards to random back number draws, the prizes just keep flowing. There is so much offered and so much to win at the Arizona Fall Championship; it delivers a very good value for your showing time and dollars. Exhibitors can chose the All Show Fee option of $450 for as many AQHA classes (except cutting) as they want. Or for those with a more limited focus, they can opt for a per class entry fee. Any way you look at it, this show has you covered and WestWorld is definitely the place to be in September 2017.

Colic Signs in Horses:
Know Them and React Appropriately Horses with abdominal pain, usually referred to as colic, often display signs of distress. Like humans, though, some horses have a higher threshold for pain than others, and signs vary from horse to horse. Noticing subtle behavioral changes associated with colic will give caretakers the upper hand in overcoming colic. Signs of colic can be lumped into five general categories.

Restless, agitated behavior. Horses may show more or less movement in the stall than usual. While some horses will stall-walk, sometimes in circles, the more common sign is a propensity to lie down. Rolling to alleviate pain is also a familiar sign, though attempts should be made to keep the horse from rolling. Many horses will sweat, too. Inappetence. Changes in appetite, especially a complete lack of interest in meals, are usually a red-flag sign that a horse is not feeling well. If inappetence persists, the horse will pass less manure. Pain signals. Horses must express pain through behavior. Signs of abdominal pain include pawing, kicking at the belly, and staring at the flanks. Some horses will curl their upper lip in the familiar Flehmen response. Clinical changes. Caretakers who are well versed in taking the vital signs of horses may note that colicky horses have elevated heart and respiration rates. A horse’s gums might be dry or discolored, not the moist pinkness associated with hydration and health. Using a stethoscope, a veterinarian may also notice a change in borborygmi, or the rumbling, gurgling sounds produced by movement of ingesta through the gastrointestinal tract. Postural changes. Pain will often sap a horse of its natural alertness and curiosity. When in pain, horses may stand with their heads lowered, looking dull or depressed. Owners are sometimes tempted to seek a veterinarian’s assistance only after the horse begins to show obvious pain signals, such as pawing or looking at its flanks. It is more advantageous to call a veterinarian as soon as a horse shows any of the aforementioned signs, including a reluctance to eat. The sooner intervention occurs, the greater likelihood of a positive outcome. Some horses show frequent signs of low-level colic, and this might be associated with hindgut acidosis. For these horses, EquiShure, a researchproven hindgut buffer, will often alleviate these bouts of colic. EquiShure helps moderate the pH of the hindgut, making the cecum and colon a hospitable environment for the microbial population that resides there.

Clydesdales Keep Cool Thanks to Generous Donation
The USA Clydesdale Preservation Foundation (USACPF) just got a little cooler, thanks to a muchneeded donation by Phoenix Manufacturing, the Valley's leading builder and supplier of residential, commercial and industrial evaporative cooling products.
When Phoenix Manufacturing heard of the USACPF’s fundraiser for swamp coolers, the company champed at the bit to provide the foundation with exactly what they need: an industrial strength mobile evaporative cooler big enough to cool their largest barn. The Master Blaster 36, which retails upwards of $3,000, is a powerful industrial strength portable evaporative cooler that can lower temperatures up-to 30 degrees in areas well over 2,000-square-feet. Set on wheels, it can easily be relocated and repositioned for the horses throughout the property, while its
quite operation design keeps the animals at peace. “Our products are able to cool in locations where air condition is not feasible. In those types of spaces this is a perfect solution,” said Anne Wood. “(The USACPF) is a great cause, and they definitely need this type of equipment to improve their life tremendously, not only the horses but the people who care for them.”

The USACPF, a nonprofit who oversees six Clydesdales supported by more than 60 volunteers, focuses on raising awareness of its iconic namesake through educational events, youth programs and breed presentations. Their mission is to bring attention to the purpose of Clydesdales beyond that of a draft horse, a job that is all but obsolete today. In 2017, Clydesdales were added to the Livestock Conservancy Agency’s “threatened” list as it is estimated only 5,000 of the horses remain in the world, so it is imperative that each horse at USACPF receives the highest quality care. “We’re very fortunate to receive the evap cooler from Phoenix Manufacturing. (our Clydesdales) cool during the day while their stalls,” said Rebecca Stivers, director and founder of USACPF, who added the Clydesdales spend the duration of the summer days in their stalls to avoid exposure to the extreme heat. “Care is really important. We have protocol to not let them out above 94 degrees.” Still, with temperatures reaching well above 100 degrees even in the shade, the addition of the Master Blaster will ensure the horses safety and health. “It will be a much cooler environment and we will see less heat stress. It will cool down their whole area. We are very blessed, and the Clydesdales will also be very grateful.” For more information on Phoenix Manufacturing, please visit: www.phoenixmanufacturing. com For more information on the USA Clydesdale Preservation Foundation, please visit: www.

Del Mar’s 78th summer season continued its positive trend as Week 2 results provided strong gains in all wagering segments. The seaside track also produced another set of highquality, five-day-a-week racing cards with robust field size. The Juy 26 to July 31 second stanza of the seven-week run saw 43 races presented drawing a total of 373 horses, an average of 8.67 per race. After two full weeks of racing, Del Mar’s has offered 88 races and lured 775 horses to them, meaning the average field size is now 8.8 for each race, above last year’s standard of 8.3 and also above the national average that sits below eight horses a contest. Wagering remained strong as meet-to-date average daily handle through the second week was 8.1% ahead of the average daily wagering for the comparable period of the 2016 summer season. As was the case after Week 1, all four betting departments – on-track wagering, inter-track wagering, advanced deposit wagering and out-of-state wagering – registered gains over last year. “We’re very encouraged with the first quarter of our race meet,” said DMTC’s racing secretary David Jerkens. “The support from our

horsemen at the entry box has been outstanding. The racing has been highly competitive, our stakes (there have been 12 through the first 10 days) have been exciting affairs and both our horses and our trainers are loving what our new director of track maintenance (Dennis Moore) has done with his tweaks to our main track.” Jerkens also noted that the track’s successful “Ship & Win” program continues to do well as it draws more horse to Del Mar, many of which become regulars on the Southern California circuit. Through the first 10 days of the meet, “S&W” horses totaled 33 starts as opposed to 24 through 10 days last year. Del Mar’s exotic players have had big targets to shoot for at the session. There have been a series of substantial Pick Six prizes spurred on by the competitive racing. Four of the first 10 Pick Six pools have resulted in carryovers that have led to major payouts. Additionally, the track’s new “Jackpot” Pick Six pool – where a single winning ticket is required to take down the prize – has now risen to a hefty $441,293 and growing heading toward its mandatory payout day on August 19 when the $1-million TVG Pacific Classic will be run.

Reduce Red Tape for Guest Workers, Small Business
As members of Congress return to their home states to visit constituents through Labor Day, the American Horse Council urges members to advocate for legislative solutions to the federal government’s beleaguered temporary worker visa program. To fix the regulatory chaos that plagues the H-2B application process, tell your elected officials – whether during a town hall meeting or visit to the local farmers’ market – to support the important measures below. In the event you don’t see your elected officials this summer, you can contact their D.C. offices at 202-225-3121, where staff members will note your concerns and brief your representatives when they return in the fall:
Fiscal Year 2018 Appropriations
For immediate relief, tell lawmakers to support H-2B cap and regulatory flexibility through the Fiscal Year 2018 appropriations process. Congress is considering language in the current spending bill that will force agencies to manage the visa program in an efficient manner for at least one year. With the current fiscal year ending September 30, Congress must address funding immediately after Labor Day. For long-term fixes to the broken system, see the measures below:

Japan’s Increase of Tariff on U.S. Frozen Beef WASHINGTON, – The government of Japan has announced that rising imports of frozen beef in the first quarter of the Japanese fiscal year (April-June) have triggered a safeguard, resulting in an automatic increase to Japan’s tariff rate under the WTO on imports of frozen beef from the United States. Strengthen Employment and Seasonal Opportunities Now Act of 2017 (SEASON) (H.R. 2004) Similar to the Senate bill, this legislation would expand exemptions for workers who have previously been vetted by immigration officials, thereby increasing cap relief. Establish expedited processing of applications to meet labor demands during peak seasons. And exempt temporary visa holders from tax credits otherwise available to full-time U.S. residents, thereby reducing costs to taxpayers. In mid-January, the government hit the 33,000 visa cap for the first half of the year. In March, the agency met its 33,000 visa allocation for the second half of 2017, leaving many small businesses who rely on seasonal labor without workers for the summer months. Although DHS issued an additional 15,000 visas on July 17, the agency issued those visas on an ad hoc, discretionary basis, undermining common sense business planning. The July decision will also create limited benefits for small businesses relying on summertime help.
begin August 1, 2017 and last through March 31, 2018. The tariff would affect only exporters from countries, including the United States, which do not have free trade agreements with Japan currently in force. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue issued the following statement: “I am concerned that an increase in Japan’s tariff on frozen beef imports will impede U.S. beef sales and is likely to increase the United States’ overall trade deficit with Japan. This would harm our important bilateral trade relationship with Japan on agricultural products. It would also negatively affect Japanese

of expert business mentors, to support new and beginning farmers. Today’s agreement provides new help resources for beginning ranchers, veterans, women, socially disadvantaged Americans and others, providing new tools to help them both grow and thrive in agri-business.
“Shepherding one generation to the next is our responsibility. We
want to help new farmers, veterans, and people transitioning from other industries to agriculture,” said Secretary Perdue. “They need land, equipment, and access to capital, but they also need advice and guidance. and its partners across rural America are working with SCORE to support new farming and ranching operations, and identify and recruit mentors with a wealth of agricultural experience. Secretary Perdue announced the new partnership in Des Moines during the Iowa Agriculture Summit. Perdue was joined by Steve Records, VicePresident of Field Operations for SCORE in signing a Memorandum of Understanding that will guide USDA and SCORE as they partner in the mentorship effort, which will soon expand to other states. “SCORE’s mission to help people start and grow vibrant small businesses is boosted by this new partnership with USDA. America’s farmers, ranchers and agri-businesses will benefit from the business knowledge and expertise SCORE can offer,” said Records. “The partnership allows both SCORE and USDA to serve more people while providing America’s farmers added support to lead to more sound business operations, create profitable farms with sustainable growth and create new jobs. We are excited at the opportunity to extend SCORE’s impact to our farmers and the agriculture industry.” SCORE mentors will partner with USDA and a wide array of groups already hard at work serving new and beginning farmers and ranchers, such as the FFA, 4-H, cooperative extension and land grant universities, nonprofits, legal aid groups, banks, technical and farm advisors. These partnerships will expand and integrate outreach and technical assistance between current and retired farmers and agri-business experts and new farmers. This joint initiative leverages SCORE’s 10,000 existing volunteer mentors and USDA’s expertise and presence in agricultural communities to bring no-cost business mentoring to rural and agricultural entrepreneurs. This initiative will also be another tool to empower the work of many community-based organizations, cooperative extension and land grant universities working with beginning farmers in their communities. SCORE mentorship will also be available to current farmers and ranchers. Anyone interested in being a mentor can get more information and sign up on the USDA New Farmers’ website at https://newfarmers.usda.gov/ mentorship.

Bug-Repelling Plants to Have Around Your Barn Naturally repel bugs by simply planting a few plants that they hate. By Cari Klostermann / AQHA
Planting bug-repelling plants around your barn will help reduce mosquitoes and other pesky insects the natural way. Journal Photo. Warmer weather means being able to comfortably ride your horse outdoors or even take him for a dip in the pond. Unfortunately, it also means all those pesky bugs are waking up from their icy hibernation or returning from their winter vacations down south. Either way, they’re back and picking up right where they left off, being an annoyance. There are some great products on the shelves to keep the bugs at bay, but what if you didn’t have to worry about them in the first place? Think about history. Our ancestors were not fortunate enough to have name-brand products to spray their horses with or nifty mosquito repelling bracelets to wear. So how did they manage? The answer is plants. There are several well-known plants that naturally ward off insects while remaining horse friendly. If you place these plants strategically around your barn, arena and house, you may not have to worry about taking a bath in bug spray before you sit on your patio or feed your horses.
Marigold
Only bugs could be upset at the sight of the bright and happy yellow marigold flowers. The plant naturally contains a compound that is used in most commercial bug repellents and can also be used as an herb to treat minor wounds. These plants do best in full sunlight and fertile soil, but keep in mind while finding a place to plant, the yellow flowers and sweet nectar could attract wasps.
98
Repel insects while keeping your barn cat very happy by planting some catnip around the barn. Studies have shown that the naturally occurring compounds in catnip are just as effective as DEET, but as a member of the mint family, its scent is easier on the nose than the harsh chemical. Plus, its pretty flowers are easy on the eyes. Catnip reaches its full potential in full sunlight and poor soil.
Lemon Thyme
This plant has a tendency to spread and does best when contained to a pot located in full sun with well-drained soil. It has a significant concentration of citronella, which effectively repels mosquitoes and other insects. The citronella aroma is accompanied by a soft lemon scent, making it a wonderful addition around your property. Like basil, this is an herb that is great to add to many dishes in the kitchen.
Drinking Behavior of Horses: Six Facts About Water Intake
Basil
Growing fresh basil is a win win. Basil can help control the mosquito population around your property and leave you with an endless supply of a delicious herb. This herb does best in pots with rich, high-quality soil and plenty of sun.
Lavender
Not only does lavender keep insects away, it looks and smells lovely. Lavender grows well in pots or flower beds located where it can receive full sun and have soil with good drainage. While bugs and insects may not be this plant’s greatest fans, it has been known to have calming effects on humans and horses alike.
Catnip
Rosemary
Rosemary has a natural oil that is pleasant to humans and horses, but mosquitoes hate it. Controlling bugs is just one of rosemary’s beneficial qualities. Research has shown that rosemary contains anti-inflammatory properties and can be used as an antimicrobial. Plant in full sunlight with well-drained soil.
As horse owners, we know well the importance of providing horses with water. Consider these six facts about water the next time you’re scrubbing buckets or waiting for the trough to fill. 1. Not surprisingly, water consumption depends on body weight. Expect a Belgian to outdrink a Haflinger any day of the week. Oddly enough, though, horses of similar body weight and breed may have completely different, though normal, intakes. What’s normal, you ask? Idle horses in a moderate climate will drink 5-15 gallons (20-55 liters) of water daily. 2. Just because your old mare drank two buckets of water yesterday and the day before that doesn’t mean she’ll drink two today. Variations in water intake for individual horses may occur from day to day. Keep track of water consumption as best as you can, and alert a veterinarian if your horse seems to drink little or no water. 3. Without question, diet affects water consumption. Horses grazing lush pasture grasses, which are high in moisture content, will drink less water than those faced with a pile of hay. In fact, horses that consume all-
SEPTEMBER 2017
hay diets drink more water than those fed mixed hay-grain diets. 4. Drinking doesn’t take up a lot of your horse’s day. Researchers calculated that well-fed mature horses spend only five or six minutes a day drinking water, though this is achieved in several visits to the water source. 5. Do foals drink water, or do their dams provide adequate fluid until weaning? If you’re a breeder, you’ve seen foals hit the waterer as early as a week old. In one study, one-month-old foals drank nearly a gallon of water in addition to more than four gallons of milk daily. 6. Depending on environmental conditions and work intensity, exercising horses may require more water than their sedentary peers, especially if they sweat. Horses that sweat daily should be given electrolytes to help replace mineral losses in sweat. Research-proven supplements like Restore SR and Race Recovery provide the best electrolyte therapy. Australian horse owners should consider two relevant products: Restore for electrolyte supplementation and Drink-Up for horses that are hesitant to drink.

The United States is rapidly becoming a net exporter of natural gas for the first time in 60 years. That’s according to data from the Census Bureau and the U.S. Energy Information Administration. While imports of gas are flat or falling, exports continue to rise, and the data give weight to government analysts’ conviction that the United States is on track to become a net energy exporter, possibly as soon as within a decade. EIA noted in a report yesterday that during the first half of 2017, the United States exported more natural gas than it imported in three of the first five months.
New Census Bureau data show that, by value, the United States was again a net exporter in June 2017, selling about $593 million worth of natural gas to the world while importing $566 million via gas pipelines from Canada and as liquefied natural gas. That means the United States sold more gas to foreign trade partners than it imported for four of the first six months of the year. With new pipeline and LNG export capacity coming online soon, the United States should close out 2017 as a net exporter of natural gas, a situation that hasn’t been seen since 1957, according to EIA. Cheniere Energy’s Sabine Pass became the first major LNG exporting hub to commence shipments since the shale gas boom. That facility is now poised to expand export capacity. Freeport LNG south of Houston expects to begin liquefaction and shipments in late 2018 or early 2019. Dominion Energy’s Cove Point LNG in Maryland will be in service by the end of this year, the company says. More projects are coming in Corpus Christi, Texas; elsewhere in the Gulf of Mexico region; and at Georgia’s Elba Island. Proponents of these investments say LNG and other gas exports will help alleviate the United States’ gargantuan trade deficit.

The funeral mass was scheduled for 10 a.m. on August 8 for AQHA Past President Peter J. Cofrancesco III, who passed away August 1. A viewing was scheduled from 2 to 8 p.m. on August 7. Both services will be held at the Our Lady of the Lake Parish at 294 S. Sparta Avenue, Sparta Township, New Jersey. Peter, 45, was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in March. A case displaying his memorabilia was unveiled July 26 at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in Amarillo. Peter said his emergence as a leading force in American Quarter Horse history came easily enough, as he was constantly surrounded by a home that told the story of his parents’ dedication to the breed and passed on to their children a passionate heart for the beauty of the Quarter Horse. A sense of giving back took Peter to the role of American Junior Quarter Horse Association president – now called AQHYA – and a young Peter set his sights on becoming AQHA president, knowing that the path to leadership was through service. “Peter was basically the captain of ship in a perfect storm of growth in the AQHA youth program,” said Julie Bryant, who was youth director for AQHA during Peter’s term, and was tasked with reaching out to 4-H, FFA and high school rodeo competitors. “Peter was the perfect ambassador. “Peter just had this ability to draw people in,” she continued. “Always smiling, always hugging, always talking up the thing he was so passionate about – the American Quarter Horse. Not any other breed. Not by a long shot. Just the Quarter Horse. No matter where we went, Peter ended up becoming best buddies with high school rodeo kids, FFA officers, 4-H kids. And, because of him, a lot of those kids joined the youth program and worked to become state qualifiers for the Youth World Show. But it didn’t matter if it was a teenager or an adult, Peter had the same effect on everybody.” Atypical of the oft-assumed 104

urban New Jersey persona, Peter and his family competed in 4-H with horses and purebred Hereford cattle, but switched their focus almost exclusively to horses as the children grew and honed their interests. Moving into amateur competition, Peter excelled at showing halter horses, often homebred, competing at every major circuit across the United States and reveling in his new friends while building his own family, meeting his wife, Carmen, at the All American Quarter Horse Congress. Peter and Carmen married in 1999 and have three children: Ireland, Peter IV and Emma. On the day each was born, Peter called AQHA from the hospital to purchase the new baby’s lifetime membership. When Peter’s father died in 2001, Peter and his siblings assumed leadership of The Grinnell Group of Companies, the family’s aggregate manufacturing, waste and recycling company.
Peter’s parents had always bred Quarter Horses, and Peter stepped up to help his mother continue the family legacy while continuing to show horses. That same year, Peter was elected an AQHA director and served on committees where he could positively contribute and influence the industry. Peter was elected to the AQHA Executive Committee in 2008 and served as president in 2011-12, focusing on youth expansion and development. “From the first meeting (of the Executive Committee), you begin to realize how big AQHA is and how much it encompasses: youth, racing, ranching, affiliates, alliance associations,” Peter said. “You get a real grasp for the scope of what we do and how much the Association influences the horse industry.” Learning that range convinced Peter that AQHA needed to take a
SEPTEMBER 2017
leadership role in the overall horse industry, something he took on personally, taking his father’s place on the New Jersey Horse Racing Commission and, with his mother, developing a popular horse charity in Sussex County. “I think AQHA needs to continue working to be the umbrella organization: That’s how we’re going to be the horse resource for the world,” he said. “We shouldn’t worry about competing with other breeds and horse organizations; we need to work together as a horse industry to increase interest in horses and make sure that horses are viable as a recreational outlet throughout the next century.” Peter was influential in forming the World Conformation Horse Association, an AQHA alliance partner that has given halter enthusiasts a more significant voice in the industry while promoting correct conformation and halter competition at all levels. The group has an annual futurity as well as classes at major shows, including the AQHA World Championship Show. After leaving office, Peter remained committed to showing. In 2012, just months after leaving the AQHA presidency, Peter returned to the World Show ring, earning world champion amateur 3-year-old mare and amateur 3-year-old stallion with homebreds Virtues and Inspirado, two of 18 world champions and 14 reserve world champions shown by Peter since 1991. Peter saw the challenges ahead and remained committed to doing his part to help the horse industry grow, continuing in his goal to ensure, that like the halter horse, all parts create a better whole and working to drive an expanding focus on youth. “We have to do something to reinvigorate our youth programs,” Peter said. “I’m a prime example of someone who can be born in a city in New Jersey, go through the 4-H program and become involved in AQHA. We have to make horses accessible to kids from all areas of the country and all environments if we’re going to continue to grow.”

Kimzey stays hot, wins Xtreme Bulls LOVINGTON, N.M. – Sage Kimzey can do no wrong. At least that’s how things appear. The reigning three-time world champion (2014-16) is now on an amazing hot streak. Two weeks after winning $50,000 and a gold medal in the finals of the Days of ’47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo in Salt Lake City, Utah, Kimzey was still in top form. The Strong City, Okla., cowboy – with a 176-point score – won the two-head average at the Lea County Fair & PRCA Rodeo Xtreme Bulls Division 1 event Aug. 8. “This is good,” said Kimzey, 22. “This is the start to the fall run and it allows me to move onto the fall with more momentum. It’s been crazy because I’ve been winning quite a bit and I’m just enjoying the ride and rodeoing my tail off until I get to the end of September. What drives me is I just want to be the best. I always think about the feeling at the end of the year, stepping on the stage and shaking the commissioner’s hand and holding up the gold buckle.” Kimzey was first in Aug. 7 the WEATHER GUARD® PRCA World Standings with $187,555 and atop the Xtreme Bull Standings with $46,572. He piled some more money on those totals with his performance at Lovington as he left town after earning $11,798. “The Xtreme Bulls are important,” said Kimzey, who won the Xtreme Bulls season title in 2015. “There’s a lot of money at all of them, and usually whoever wins the Xtreme Bulls (season title) has a good shot of coming into the NFR pretty high in the standings.” Kimzey won the first round with an 89-point trip on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Tin Cup, and then followed that up by capturing the win in the short round and average with
Sage and his Dad
his 87-point ride on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Black Gold. “The first bull was a good spinner to the left and he was really smooth and he had a lot of timing to him,” Kimzey said. “The second bull was the opposite. He was one that was tough to get by. Tyler Bingham came up to me after he saw what I had and said he was a tough bull to ride that bucked hard, and I got excited then. I enjoy the challenge for sure. The hours are what matters, not the seconds in the arena. We train all year to be ready to do this. I’m always prepared no matter how many I have to get on each night.” This is Kimzey’s second Xtreme Bulls Division 1 win this season. He also took the title in Fort Worth, Texas, Jan. 17-18. The list of the other 2017 Division 1 winners is comprised of Ty Wallace (San Antonio, Feb. 25), Tristan Mize (Fort Mohave, Ariz., March 11) and Trey Benton (Reno, Nev., June 15). For his career, Kimzey now has five Xtreme Bulls Division 1 titles, which ties him for second place on the all-time list with Wesley Silcox. For more coverage of the Lea County Fair & PRCA Rodeo Xtreme Bulls Division 1 event, check out the Aug. 18 issue of the ProRodeo Sports News.

With a meticulous eye for what it takes to build a world class facility, Al spared nothing to make this a truly special ranch with superior function. Capitalizing on the serenity of the Rio Verde Foothills, and utilizing the backdrop of the Four Peaks mountain range, this property was also uniquely created to take advantage of the surrounding area’s natural beauty.
This 30-acre ranch is centered by the main show barn, which includes in part, tack rooms, saddling areas, and the ranch offices. The stud barn and mare motel can be found on either side of the main barn, bringing the total number of stalls to 45. In addition, a 130' x 110’ lighted cutting arena, 60' round pen, 160' round cutting arena, six horse Priefert panel walk-er, 150' x 300' reining and roping arena, 3 large turnout pastures, and 10 acres of fenced cow pens, all together complete this outstanding working layout.

To make this ranch a home, a 3,974 square foot owner’s residence was constructed, and decorated with country charm. Four modular support residences were also added, each with its own sense of rustic charm.

Secretary Perdue Partners with FFA to Support Next Generation of Leaders in Agriculture
Taking action to encourage and inspire American youth, and build a strong foundation for the agriculture industry of tomorrow (Washington, D.C., July 26, 2017) – U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced today that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will partner with National FFA to support youth, and prepare the workforce of tomorrow for unique careers in agriculture. Following their remarks, Secretary Perdue and CEO of the National FFA Organization, Mark Poeschl, signed a memorandum of understanding (PDF, 225 KB) between USDA and National FFA. You may click HERE or on the video below to watch Secretary Perdue’s remarks. “At National FFA, we are
Making Our Military Strong Againn Our men and women in uniform are the greatest fighting force in the world and the guardians of American freedom. That’s why the Trump Administration will rebuild our military and do everything it can to make sure our veterans get the care they deserve. Our military needs every asset at its disposal to defend America. We cannot allow other nations to surpass our military capability. The Trump Administration will pursue the highest level of military readiness. President Trump will end the defense sequester and submit a new budget to Congress outlining a plan to rebuild our military. We will provide our military leaders with the means to plan for our future defense needs. We will also develop a state-of-theart missile defense system to protect against missile-based attacks from states like Iran and North Korea. Cyberwarfare is an emerging battlefield, and we must take every measure to safeguard our national 120

We look forward to our partnership and the ability to share our ideas with USDA.” Under the newly signed MOU, USDA and National FFA will collaborate on both short and long term initiatives to motivate and prepare young people, connect them with opportunities in agriculture, food, and natural resources systems, and build appreciation for the reach and importance of agriculture. The MOU was signed in Washington, D.C., during the National FFA Organization’s State Presidents’ Conference.

We will make it a priority to develop defensive and offensive cyber capabilities at our U.S. Cyber Command, and recruit the best and brightest Americans to serve in this crucial area. Let us never forget that our military is comprised of heroic people. We must also ensure that we have the best medical care, education and support for our military service members and their families – both when they serve, and when they return to civilian life. We will get our veterans the care they need wherever and whenever they need it. There should be no more long drives. No more wait lists or scheduling backlogs. No more excessive red tape. Just the care and support our veterans have earned through sacrifice and service to our country. The Trump Administration will transform the Department of Veterans Affairs to meet the needs of 21st century service members and of our female veterans. Our reforms will begin with firing the corrupt and incompetent VA executives who let our veterans down, modernizing the bureaucracy, and empowering the doctors and nurses to ensure our veterans receive the best care available in a timely manner.
House Lawmakers Pass Equine Therapy Amendment for Veterans Prior to adjourning for the August recess, the U.S. House of Representatives approved an amendment to the “Make America Secure Appropriations Act” (H.R. 3219) offered by Rep. Andy Barr (R-KY), a bill that will increase equine therapy funding for veterans by $5 million during FY2018. In a statement released Friday, July 28, Congressman Barr expressed his pleasure over passage of the defense spending legislation. He stated that he is “particularly pleased that the final bill … expands the availability of evidence-based equine treatment for veterans who have suffered trauma while serving our country.” Before the equine therapy provision becomes law, House and Senate lawmakers must convene a “conference” to negotiate final legislation for a vote in both chambers, and present the bill to the President for his signature. Because the House will not return to Washington until September 5, Congress will not be able to negotiate a final bill until the fall. Following failure of healthcare legislation last
