Taylor Sheridan NRHA REINER OF THE YEAR
The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Hall of Fame Committee developed a new award supported by the Reining Horse Foundation (RHF) to recognize the NRHA Reiner of the Year. This new accolade allows NRHA to honor a person/entity who enacts a measurable, positive influence on the industry. The inaugural recipient of the Reiner of the Year award is Taylor Sheridan. The NRHA Board of Directors voted to approve both this award and candidate for recognition.
Sheridan, a horse enthusiast since childhood who started reining after his Hollywood acting and directing career took off, elevated his commitment to reining by producing The Last Cowboy, a reality-based TV program on Paramount Network, which tied into August’s Run for a Million event in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Last Cowboy put reining center stage by chronicling the journey of eight reining professionals as they prepared elite horses for the Million Dollar Invitational, the marquee event during the Run for a Million. Both the television series and the event in Las Vegas brought reiners together in a unique way and exposed a new audience to the sport of reining. The Last Cowboy highlighted the many positive aspects of reining, from the family atmosphere to the care riders invest in their equine athletes to maintain their welfare, and brought some of NRHA’s largest events to the attention of an expanded audience. The enduring positive energy, new relationships, and fresh perspective that Sheridan has brought to the sport of reining qualified him as the ideal recipient of this prestigious award. “Taylor is a man of great vision and determination,” said NRHA President Mike Hancock. “His tenacity and persistence helped drive the production [of The Last
Cowboy and the Run for a Million] faster and farther than anyone else could have. We’re so happy to announce that he’s our Reiner of the Year.” Sheridan will be recognized alongside this year’s class of NRHA Hall of Fame inductees during the NRHA Futurity at Sliders’ Night Out presented by Toyon Ranch on December 4 at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. On this special night, RHF will recognize new and previous NRHA Hall of Fame inductees as well as the Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and celebrate the sport’s legacy and bright future. For details on how to host a Hall of Fame table or become a major event donor, contact RHF Executive Director Leslie Baker at lbaker@nrha.com or (405) 946-7400. 5

Angelina Jolie and Taylor Sheridan Team Up for
Those Who Wish Me Dead
Angelina Jolie is joining forces with writer-director Taylor Sheridan for the thriller Those Who Wish Me Dead, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The actress will star in the film, while Sheridan, known for such films as Hell or High Water and Sicario, will direct from his own script.
The story, based on a book of the same name by Michael Koryta, follows a teen in a witness protection program evading killers in the fire-raged wilderness of Montana. The report states the film will “veer away from certain points,” rather than act as a straightup adaptation; and act as more of a female-driven “by-the-seat-of-yourpants chase movie.”

WHY ANIMAL CRUELTY LEGISLATION IS
CONCERNING
We often share information about legislation that has implications for animal owners. The facts we share can surprise our followers as they know our organization is centered around animal welfare and they don’t always understand why we don’t show some of that legislation in a more positive light.
Protect The Harvest firmly and wholeheartedly believes that all animals deserve to be treated using best welfare practices. This belief is part of why we work so hard to defend animal owners’ rights to own and use animals. Anyone that cares about and for animals feels animal cruelty is wrong, and it deserves to be punished under existing laws. It is important to remember, there are already felony animal cruelty laws in all 50 states. Many times, concerns about certain legislation will arise when the curtain is pulled back and the supporting groups and language used is analyzed.
PACT Act – Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture Act (H.R. 724)
H.R. 724, a bill that passed the House of Representatives on October 22, 2019, reads like so many other animal rights pushed bills. Vague language allows for a wide spectrum of interpretation. We see this situation frequently in pro10
posed legislation concerning animals. So, can we surmise it is done on purpose? On the surface, this bill looks good, it looks like it prevents animal cruelty. In section (d) Exceptions it looks to exempt veterinarians, animal husbandry, slaughter for food, hunting, and scientific research and testing. This is why it was such an easy sell to the majority of the lawmakers who signed it.
Cruelty is wrong so what’s the problem?
When considering the ideology of animal rights and the steps they have taken for years to sway public opinion and legislation, the use of certain words can raise a red flag. Use of words like “customary and normal” are very subjective. While there is a wide range of “common practices” in veterinary medicine and animal agriculture, not everyone agrees on all those practices being customary and normal. Practices can differ for many different reasons including climate, operating expense, education, and experience, that does not make any of those practices cruel. There are often many ways to accomplish a task. Depending on what a person’s beliefs and expertise might be, their idea of what is customary and normal may change, especially if they are animal rights leaning.
In (f) Definitions, H.R. 724 states: “(1) the term ‘animal crushing’ means actual conduct in which one or more living non-human mammals, birds, reptiles, or amphibians is purposely crushed, burned, drowned, suffocated, impaled, or otherwise subjected to serious bodily injury (as defined in section 1365 and including conduct that, continued on page 12
11
from page 10
WHY ANIMAL CRUELTY LEGISLATION IS
CONCERNING
if committed against a person and in the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States, would violate section 2241 or 2242)”
Reading the definition brings several concerns to mind. In someone’s uneducated “customary and normal” interpretation many everyday actions could be a felony under this law.
Impact on Safely Handling Animals
The following examples are all humane and good animal welfare practices used by veterinarians, farmers and ranchers, and pet owners across this country every day. They are standard, necessary practices that could be easily misunderstood by someone uneducated in animal handling and husbandry. Making these actions easy targets for animal rights groups to use to spread their cruelty message to the unknowing public. ● Putting livestock in a squeeze chute to vet, or to provide treatment – crush. Squeeze chutes are used to safely immobilize livestock for examination and treatment by veterinarians, owners, or farm/ranch employees. A chute helps keep the animal and people working on it safe during procedures or treatment. Squeeze chutes are essential when working with livestock that often weigh 500 to 1500 pounds or more. It allows handlers to treat hundreds of animals in a day. ● Branding livestock – burn. Branding is necessary to identify animals’ owners, especially in western states where thousands of livestock are turned out on tens of thousands of acres. Pastures are often only separated by a wire fence. Animals must have a permanent, easily visible identification so they can be cared for properly by their owners. The process of branding is done in one of two ways: hot-iron branding or freeze branding. Both cause only quick, temporary discomfort, much like a vaccination. ● Neck roping a calf to doctor in a pasture – suffocate. In places where there are immense, 12
open fields, it is not practical or humane to move a sick animal sometimes miles to a corral and squeeze chute to administer care. The stress that could cause the animal usually far outweighs the benefit. It is much more efficient and effective for the animal to be roped and “doctored” immediately out in the field. A good cowboy can doctor many animals in less time with less stress than it would take to drive them to a handling facility. ● Applying ear tags to livestock – impale. Ear tags are an important part of livestock identification, often used to match females with their offspring. This ensures that pairs are kept together when moving pastures. ● Home health care for household pets involving subcutaneous fluids or medication – impale. Leaving an animal at a veterinary hospital or office for extended recovery is not always in the best interest of the pet and is a large financial burden for pet owners. Veterinarians often instruct owners on care and send animals home to save on animal stress and owner expenses. This care can encompass many actions performed by pet owners including home care for diabetic pets or the administration of subcutaneous fluids for pets with kidney failure. Even more concerning than the vague definition of the term ‘animal crushing’ are the three additional sections used in that definition. These three sections were written specifically for people and should not transfer directly to animals, the implications are huge.
Impact on Breeding Animals
In section 1365 the definition of bodily injury includes “(D) impairment of the function of a bodily member, organ, or mental faculty”. The mention of this opens a door very wide for interpretation of what an animal’s mental status may be. It is a common animal rights goal to liken animals to humans in this way. Who’s to say the standard animal care practice of castration might not end up as a felony, depending on the opinion and beliefs of those tasked with enforcing this proposed law. It obviously physically affects a “bodily member or organ,” and it also changes the behavior of the animal. continued on page 14
13
from page 12 WHY ANIMAL CRUELTY LEGISLATION IS
CONCERNING
Sections 2241 and 2242 define sexual abuse with regards to people. The cause for concern here is the increased frequency of animal rights groups claiming that any purposeful breeding and artificial insemination of animals is akin to rape. They label breeding stock as sex slaves, attempting to convey these animals have human thoughts and feelings. This is done specifically to play on the uneducated public’s emotions. Under this law, would a rancher or dairyman or horse breeder end up a felon? Who would be in charge of deciding what is “customary and normal”? Artificial insemination has been key to the massive increase in efficiency in livestock production. It allows breeders access to the best genetics. Producers are now able to generate greater yields and higher quality products using fewer resources than in past years. This is vital to the sustainability of animal agriculture and the ability to provide for an ever-expanding human population. The passing of this bill seems to set a precedence that will eventually criminalize animal breeding and ownership.
There Are Already Animal Cruelty Laws in Place in All 50 States
All 50 states have animal cruelty laws in place, meaning there are already set standards held up at the state level. This law, because it is Federal, has the potential to damage many yet unmentioned industries. For example, would transportation of these “abused” animals across state lines make the list of potential felonies? That may interest livestock transporters.
Why Do You Need To Educate Your Lawmakers?
Laws like this are aiming to chip away at animal ownership on a federal level. If you are an animal owner, you have cause to be concerned and it is time to look at the big picture of what ani14
mal rights groups are working to accomplish. Animal rights groups take advantage of the fact that most lawmakers are often not experts in animal care or welfare. Usually, lawmakers listen to the loudest voices or the organization that recognizes them with awards or contributions. Organizations like The Humane Society of the United States work hard to foster relationships with lawmakers using these tactics. The PACT Act is just another example of “wolves in sheep’s clothing”. In the media, articles quote muckity mucks from the HSUS and the Humane Society Legislative Fund patting the backs of their “award winners” (who also happen to be the authors of H.R. 724) using words like “depraved”, “gruesome”, and “inhumane” to paint a picture in the uninformed minds. Who will decide what is inhumane or not? What are their credentials and experience? Animal rights groups work very hard every day to anthropomorphize animals, changing the narrative as to what is generally considered cruel or abuse. It is clear many stakeholders, including veterinarians and livestock experts, were left out of the conversation about this proposed federal law.
Animal Rights Has Nothing to Do With Animal Welfare
Let us not forget, that time and time again, animal rights groups have stated that in their opinion, simple animal ownership is the same as slavery and they consider that right an act of cruelty. Their opinion of “customary and normal” may differ drastically from your opinion. Animal rights has nothing to do with animal welfare and everything to do with the end of animals in human care. Need a recent example? On the same day H.R. 724 passed the House, Newsweek. com published an article reporting on a letter from PETA asking Dictionary .com to change its definition of the word “animal”. They claim the current definition creates a distinction between humans and other animals that they believe to be “speciesist”. Carefully consider who is educating your lawmakers. Keep those facts in mind when reading about new legislation that touts itself as preventing cruelty.
If you would like to voice your opinion to lawmakers and effect change, please review S. 479 and contact your U.S. Senator.

Unstoppable Gina Schumacher: bac
At Elementa Masters Premiere the stands were packed and all tables were taken at the elegant ringside restaurant with its candlelight tables, as the public flocked to watch the second section of the impressive Non Pro Class that followed on from the Intermediate and Limited levels disputed in the morning of Friday 8 November: an exciting presentation of the top Open riders that will take the field for the highlight of this event was held between the two sections. In addition to those fans who made it here to Verona to watch the competitions live, such huge numbers have been following the event as it unfolds via streaming that the official website crashed. The server was upgraded over Thursday night to ensure that everyone had the chance to enjoy today’s appointment with the great Non Pro competition.
The arena lit up on the second day of Elementa Masters Premiere to host an impressive field of 107 participants fired up and ready to battle in the NRHA Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro and Limited Non Pro, with spirits undampened by the grey skies hanging over Verona. A number of entries worthy of a Special Event. If we consider that within days of the opening of registration last August, the number of entries surpassed the places available, forcing many athletes to sit this one out, there can be no doubt that the appeal of Elementa Masters sets records that go beyond the rich prize money. In this carefully planned context, where care was even taken to entertain the crowd each time the arena was dragged, with the use of lights, music continued on page 22 18

and videos to interact with the public, an irrepressible Gina Schumacher slid to a thrilling 223 to clinch the title of the $40,000 Non Pro competition on Shine N Whiz (Topsail Whiz x Spark N Pretty). “This is actually my mum’s horse” explained Gina and added laughing, “in fact, I think he probably prefers her to me! I have not been riding him very long, but now mum has less time she has given him to me to show. This is our third outing together and he tries really hard, so I enjoy riding him every time.” It was a long haul for the German 22-yearold who boasts the 2016 NRHA World Championship Non Pro and FEI Reigning World Young Riders Championship among many other titles, and needs little introduction to reining fans: she was the first and last rider to enter the arena in the second section of the Non Pro event that ran through Friday evening. Her first draw was with the 8-yearold stallion Snip O Lution who officially retired tonight, closing his career on a strong 221 and placing third: “We took the decision because this horse has been competing since he was 3; he was SWRHA Open Lev 4 Champion in 2014 and has been a Derby finalist both in the Open and Non Pro categories, so I think he deserves a rest.” Gunstep, the horse she placed top of the AQHA Non Pro competition on Thursday afternoon was last in and Gina chose to take it easy as the horse has had some difficult moments in the show pen: “My main goal was to make sure he felt comfortable.” Just a single point shy of Gina’s score was Austrian Anna Lisec with a 222 aboard the flashy palomino This Wimps So Fly, by Wimpys Little Step x Fly Flashy Jac. The 9-year-old gelding, bred by Ruben Vandorp and owned by Sabine Lisec & Chuck Klipfel, has partnered Anna through a series of ventures since 2014. In 2015 the duo was NRHA European Derby Non Pro Champion at all four levels, in 2017 at the Level 4 and was back in the finals of the same event last year, placing 4th at Level 4. 22
Tying for first place on a score of 218 to triumph at both the Intermediate and Limited levels were German Justin Ketterer aboard his uncle’s 7-yearold Jacs Electric Snap by Jacs Electric Spark out of Shania Snapper and Frenchman, Gregory Morat on OK Spook, 12 years, son of Smart Spook and OK Mate. Justin, just 20 years, hails from the Black Forest where his family has a farm. “I have been reining since I was a kid and started competing more seriously when I was about 12; this is my third year showing this horse that was bred by my dad. I had a good feeling coming here and was really pleased with the way my horse went. The show was cool as well: everything looked nice, the ground was good, and the organisation went smoothly.” And Justin’s plans now? “I’m going to the States to watch my sister compete in the Okla Futurity with a horse we have there.” Maybe next year it will be Justin himself, though as he says: “You need the right horse!” Self-described “entrepreneur, globe-trotter and motor sports enthusiast” Gregory Morat has been reining since 2012 and chose to create his own facility in order to better enjoy the sport, the beautiful Bo Ranch located close to France’s “horse capital”, Fontainebleau. The switch from bikes to horses was a very conscious choice for this competitor who earned the moniker of the “True Gentleman” after stopping to aid a Russian rival recover from a fall during the gruelling 2017 Dakar rally: “I love competing with horses because they give so much to me, it is very different having a partnership with an animal to racing on a machine. I decided to abandon racing bikes after the Dakar to devote myself totally to horses. This particular horse, OK Spook, was really with me today and it was very exciting to be competing in the first Elementa event; he gave the maximum.” Despite some nerves when passing the gate, Gregory thought he achieved about the right mix of control and adrenalin that allowed the pair to reach this result. His thanks go to Stefano Ferri, head trainer at Bo Ranch who was nearby to give support and “reveal some of reining’s secrets”.

NRHA and FEI Reach New Agreement
After more than 20 years of cooperation, which produced some of the most exciting moments in World Equestrian Games’ history, the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) is pleased to announce a new agreement has been reached with the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI). FEI
unanimously approved the new agreement at its General Assembly, held in Moscow on November 19.
“I am so proud of our NRHA Task Force that worked diligently with the officials at FEI to come to a workable Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). All of these individuals have focused on our mission to promote the reining horse. Although each organization has different needs, we were able to meet those needs and agree on a path forward,” said NRHA President Mike Hancock. “This MOU provides more clarity, and the conversations have brought about better understanding. This agreement preserves the progress we have made over the last two decades, provides a means to develop more joint competitions, and protects the heritage of both organizations! Pertinent details on the agreement and its potential impact on the NRHA membership will be directly communicated in the near future as implementation plans are finalized. NRHA looks forward to growing reining alongside FEI and through its affiliates around the globe.

The 45-year-old Canadian, who came to Europe for a short stay in 1994, and has been here ever since, was the first rider to achieve a hat trick at the NRHA European Futurity, conquering the title of Open Champion three years in a row. More Elementa Masters Premiere Open
Morey on this memorable night is by the outstanding Colonels Smoking Gun out of Dun It By Chick and was continuing an excellent career that has seen him finalist in the NRHA Open Futurity, the NRBC Open, NRHA Open Derby and NRHA Non Pro Derby. Morey chooses a single word to describe this horse with which he has been competing successfully for some time: “Awesome”. The run that secured the title for Fisk was in no way a given: “It was just fantastic! I could never have predicted that I would be celebrating this win today, but one of my goals this year was to compete and do well in this show; I had actually been holding the horse back a bit so he would be ready for this Open.” Fisk works out of Horse Academy, Mooslargue France where he not only trains but follows a group of Non Pros: “It’s a part of the job I really enjoy; one of the satisfactions of being a trainer for me is being able to help people develop and in this facility our clients have the advantage of being able to compete regularly at home – we have about one show a month.” Next up on Fisk’ agenda is the IRHA/NRHA Futurity coming up at the end of this month.
Sharing reserve honours were two Belgian colleagues among Europe’s most successful reiners, namely Ann Fonck on Gunners Specialolena, daughter of NRHA Three Million Dollar Sire Gunners Special Nite out of Dolly Special Lena and owned by Diego Dalla Gassa, and Cira Baeck on Maria Cecilia Fiorucci’s power-packed, eyecatching stallion Phantom Face, previously ridden by Craig Schmersal who earned $113,089 competing in the US with this 6-year-old son of Pale Face Dunnit out of Gorgeous Like A Star, before coming to Italy. Fonck’s mount, “Dolly”, was a relative “young’un”’ in last night’s event: last year the 5-year-old mare took Laura Della Gassa to the top of Levels 4 and 3 of the 4-year-old Non Pro Italian Futurity. 34
Another very happy lady after marking 225 on Winnie The Boo (Spooks Gotta Whiz x Jac Golden Faith), was Sylvia Rzepka, who came back again after Friday night’s win of the AQHA Open here to win the Intermediate Open on Florian Aubruner’s 7-year-old mare with a great run that also placed her 4th in the Open. “I have had
this horse for a couple of years and have made quite a few changes,” explained Sylvia “and now he’s really starting to perform well for me. He can be a little bit freaky sometimes, but when he shows he has a heart of gold”. Winner of the Italian Derby in 2011, Rzepka has competed in the World Equestrian Games (WEG) twice and was part of the German team awarded the bronze medal at the FEI World Championships in 2008; on this mare, Sylvia took Reserve Honours in the L3 Open NRHA European Derby this August, then going on to gain the Sylvia Rzepk title of Level 3 Champion and Level 4 Reserve Champion at the Austrian Maturity the following month. She has been working out of the facility of H & D Schulz Quarter Horses a Neustadt, Austria for the last two years: “It’s a great place for me to train my horses, it’s one of the busiest areas in Austria for reining and we have the Austrian Futurity and Maturity there”. Rzepka summed up her show last night as “highly emotional”. She commented: “There is always something that can go better in a run, but I went in there last night with high expectations”. Expectations that certainly were not disappointed. Of the
ka 225 on Winnie The Boo (Spooks Gotta Whiz x Jac Golden Faith), event Sylvia added: “I have been in the sport for the last 20 years, but to compete in something like this was pretty cool.” Reserve Champion at the Intermediate level was Klaus Lechner, who also travelled here from Austria, guided Cody Rooster Delmaso (Ricochet Rooster X Made Of Lacy) to a score of 223. The veteran stallion, 14 years of age, is owned by wife Julia-Gaupmann-Lechner. Klaus has been working professionally in reining since 2010 and now runs his own centre, together with Julia, in Lower Austria.
Niklas Ludwig was crowned Limited Open Champion after closing his run on 218.5 aboard 2013 stallion Whiz N Spook (Smart Spook X Whizicle) owned by Margot Van Doone. Ludwig said of his companion:
“I would describe him as a big baby: he likes to play around and can be a little tricky to handle at times, but I really like him. We have been together for the last two years”. He adds, “I always knew this show was going to be special, of course, it’s partly the money but also everything around. 35

Wondering’ about the Freestyle? C Saturday night at Fieracavalli,
Verona, the pavilions were emptying as the public started for home, but in the stands surrounding the Elementa Masters Premiere show pen, as the coloured lights swept the arena in the run-up to the $ 50,000 Freestyle, no-one was budging. In fact, the area had to be closed off to limit the crowd pressing to enter the pavillion. Undoubtedly, Freestyle has a special appeal for both reining fans and the non-specialist public with its exciting and entertaining mix of technique and spectacle, music and manoeuvres. While the technical prowess may have varied between the runs, one element that all contained was an imaginative choreography and an attention to detail in the choice of music and costumes that ensured that every pair was fun to watch. At the end of the day it was Cira Baeck, a sparkling and powerful Wonder Woman on the glittering stallion Phantom Face, 6-yearold son of Pale Face Dunnit out of Gorgeous Like A Star now owned by Cecilia Fiorucci, that convinced both judges and public alike with a run awarded a whopping 231 that further underlined the fact that Freestyle is a true reining competition: while the artistic element does count, on the judges’ scoring card technique remains paramount. The crowd responded with a roar as Baeck circled and spun, shield in hand, crowned with a tiara and donning the instantly recognisable red bodice and blue pants 38

of the superhero. “The idea was conceived by my boss, Cecilia,” states Cira, “and we chose Wonder Woman as this sport is undoubtedly male-dominated, so we wanted to make a powerful statement for women. It was not actually my first Freestyle, I competed in one a couple of years ago in Poland, dressed as a Ketchup bottle! Both times it has been fun, but I especially enjoyed the run last night because this is the first event in which I have showed this horse at the Open earlier and later in the Freestyle, and he was really there for me.”
Giovanni “Dido” Masi
Pipped to the post was Giovanni “Dido” Masi who entered the show pen, or perhaps ‘show ring’, perfectly turned out as a classical English rider, complete with jodhpurs, English saddle and spurs before choosing to swap his original hard hat with the cowboy hat of Filippo Masi, his dad, whose turnarounds apparently offered greater appeal. Against the music of Bon Jovi’s ‘It’s my life’, Giovanni then performed a series of brilliantly executed reining manoeuvres on Majestic Okie (Okie Dun It Too X Majestic Ice), the 11-year-old stallion owned by Katherine Dejori to finish on 230.5 and claim reserve honours. Gennaro Lendi placed third on the World Champion Yankee Gun (Rowdy Yankee Dam x Snow Gun) belonging to his friend Marco Mele. The 10-year-old stallion recently costarred alongside – or rather under - Sylvester Stallone in the Hollywood star’s latest film to hit the box office Last Blood. Last night it was Gennaro Lendi, Stallone’s horse master for the film, to take the part of Rambo. Lendi galloped and spun like a rocket around the arena, eliminating enemies with his machine 42

gun and sliding to dramatic stops, his muscles – not exactly the real ones - rippling. The pair was awarded 228.5 at the conclusion of their run. Following her Freestyle win and reserve honours in the Elementa Masters Premiere Open, Cira Baeck drew her experience here at Verona to a rewarding conclusion as team-mate to
Evald Rifeser (Non Pro) and Vittoria Marzorati (Para Reining) in the team that triumphed in the Global Team Cup with a score of 644.

Sliders’ Night Out Pres
One of the biggest nights on the social and charitable calendar of reiners is set for December 4, 2019, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Sliders’ Night Out, presented by Toyon Ranch, will celebrate the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Hall of Fame while benefiting the nonprofit Reining Horse Foundation (RHF).
On tap are the inductions of Roberto Cuoghi, Claudio Risso, and the mare Snip O Gun into the NRHA Hall of Fame and recognition of David Silva with the Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2018, Sliders’ Night Out became the single largest annual fundraiser for RHF, which serves as the charitable arm of the NRHA. Nearly $50,000 was generated to support the Foundation mission of caring for and honoring our reining community. Core programs include the Dale Wilkinson Memorial Crisis Fund, youth scholarships and leadership development through the National Reining Horse Youth Association, and perpetuation of the sport’s history through the NRHA Hall of Fame. Members of the National Reining Horse Youth Association will participate in Sliders’ Night Out presented by Toyon Ranch and benefiting the nonprofit Reining Horse Foundation. Youth scholarships and programming are among the foundation’s core programs. Inductees into the NRHA Hall of Fame gather in 2018. They will welcome new inductees at Sliders’ Night Out 2019 on December 4 in Oklahoma City. Fundraising is again a key goal. Donations of every level are important. They come from individuals, corporations, ranches, training barns, foundations, and groups of reiners joining forces to support the event. To date, Platinum Donors include Tim and Kim Anderson, Booth Ranches, Ian and Kristen Cantacuzene, Rick Clark, and Elementa. 46
Gold Donors are Jack & Viola Scott. Silver Donors include Arcese Quarter Horses, Mark and Julie Blake, Blazer Farms & Cattle Company, Cardinal Ranch, Roberto Cuoghi, Foals R Us Repro Center & Stallion Station by Lotti, Markel/Frank & Susan Costantini, Oklahoma City Convention & Visitors Bureau, and Santa Hill Ranch. These top-level donors plus other Hall of Fame Table Hosts make it possible for all NRHA Hall of Fame inductees to attend the event as honored guests. Hall of Fame members attending in 2018 received new medallions, elevating the prestige and visibility of their awards. All Hall of Fame members are invited to be a part of the program again this year. Another high point of the evening is recognition of NRHA Affiliate Ambassadors, volunteers selected from around the world to be honored for their work at the grassroots of reining. This program is also sponsored by Toyon Ranch of Pilot Point, Texas, an NRHA official corporate partner. Toyon Ranch owners John and Nancy Tague make it possible for these honored volunteers to attend Sliders’ Night Out and receive a travel incentive as well as passes to the NRHA Futurity. Advance reservations are encouraged to ensure a chance to be in attendance at Sliders’ Night Out and enjoy the steak dinner and celebration. The benefit is held in conjunction with the NRHA Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship Show.

Toyon Ranch Recognizes
NRHA Affiliate Ambassadors
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – An inaugural program to recognize and involve National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) affiliate volunteers was deemed a success in 2018. NRHA Corporate Partner Toyon Ranch of Pilot Point, Texas, is again sponsoring the NRHA Affiliate Ambassadors through a program that showcases the grassroots level of reining. The 2019 Affiliate Ambassadors will be guests at Sliders’ Night Out, a fundraising event that celebrates the NRHA Hall of Fame while benefiting the nonprofit Reining Horse Foundation (RHF). Sliders’ Night Out will be held on December 4 in Oklahoma City at State Fair Park. The goal of the Affiliate Ambassador program is to bring together diverse reining enthusiasts to connect with the global reining community at multiple levels. The NRHA Affiliate Ambassadors receive two complimentary reserved seats for Sliders’ Night Out presented by Toyon Ranch. Some of these special guests enjoy the charity fundraiser in 2018. Photo by Bucky Harris, NRHA NRHA has reached out to its affiliates around the world to identify individuals making an impact on reining at the affiliate level. From each of eight U.S. affiliate regions, plus those in eastern and western Canada, South America, Mexico, Europe, Oceania, and Africa, a special selection committee will choose a representative and their guest to attend Sliders’ Night Out. The prestigious banquet coincides with the NRHA Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship Show, regarded as the world’s premier reining competition, November 28-December 7. These special affiliate ambassadors will be eligible to have a portion of their travel costs reimbursed and receive two complimentary reserved seats for Sliders’ Night Out, recognition in the commemorative program for them
and their designated affiliate, and two complimentary admission badges to the NRHA Futurity.
“The Affiliate Ambassador program is all about reaching far and wide to recognize the people who make reining happen across the world,” said Nancy Tague, who owns Toyon Ranch of Pilot Point, Texas, with her husband, John. “Passion for reining and our community is what drives these ambassadors to do the heavy lifting that allows others to enjoy the opportunity to compete. “It is only appropriate that we share in recognizing their efforts during Sliders’ Night Out, along with the NRHA Hall of Fame inductees and Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award honoree.” At Sliders’ Night Out 2019, past NRHA Hall of Fame inductees will be hosted and honored as special guests. New inductees include Italians Roberto Cuoghi and Claudio Risso and the mare Snip O Gun owned by Hilldale Farm of Texas. In addition, David Silva of North Carolina will be recognized with the NRHA Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award. Everyone is invited to make a donation to attend, and RHF Board members are encouraging reining breeders, owners, exhibitors, NRHA Professionals, affiliates, corporate partners, and supporters to contribute. From major event underwriters and Hall of Fame table hosts to single-seat donors, every person’s contribution is important. Platinum, gold, and silver event donors and Hall of Fame table hosts can entertain Hall of Fame members as their table guests, bringing ample opportunities to mix and mingle with the icons of reining. The first Hall of Fame inductee was the late Dale Wilkinson, inducted in 1986. Today, the distinguished Hall of Fame includes nearly 100 people, horses, and organizations for the sport that’s been in existence for more than a half-century. Individuals selected as NRHA Affiliate Ambassadors will be notified and announced at a later date. For more information and event and donor details, visit reiningfoundation.com or contact Foundation Executive Director Leslie Baker at (405) 946-7400, Ext. 106, lbaker@ nrha.com.

Auction Including Bob Avila’s NRHA Futurity Saddle to Benefit NRHyA
The National Reining Horse Youth Association (NRHyA) is set to auction a piece of history: National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Professional Bob Avila’s 1994 NRHA Futurity champion saddle.
Won riding Lenas Wright On, the saddle was donated by Avila to benefit NRHyA programming. It will be auctioned during the Reining Horse Foundation’s premier fundraising event, Sliders’ Night Out presented by Toyon Ranch, on December 4 at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. “In the last couple of years, I have participated in a few things with youth programs and it got me thinking about this,” Avila said. “I have had the saddle for a long time, and I thought it would be a neat thing for the kids. I would rather help them than anyone else.” Funds generated from the saddle will help provide scholarships, leadership opportunities, and programming to the youth members of NRHA. NRHyA is funded through RHF, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
60
“Winning the NRHA Futurity is incredibly special, and there are only 30 people in the world who have ever won it,” Avila said. “It is a dream that every trainer in the world, young or old, has. He [Lenas Wright On] was a special horse and a great athlete. You don’t get a lot of those in your lifetime. It is a very special saddle to me, and I want it to help the kids.” Not only can spectators bid on this commemorative saddle and other items offered in the live auction, but they will also enjoy an event where RHF recognizes former and incoming NRHA Hall of Fame inductees, honors the 2019 Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, and presents the first-ever NRHA Reiner of the Year award. It is a night celebrating the sport’s legacy and bright future. “I am getting older, and I would like to see the stuff I have end up with people who will appreciate it,” Avila said. Advance reservations are encouraged to ensure a chance to attend Sliders’ Night Out and enjoy the steak dinner and celebration. The benefit is held in conjunction with the NRHA Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship Show. To make event reservations or bid by proxy on the saddle, contact Leslie Baker, RHF Executive Director, at (405) 946-7400 ext. 106, or email rhf@nrha.com.

CONQUISTADOR WHIZ
Silver Spurs Equine lost a legend with the passing of NRHA Two Million Dollar Sire
Conquistador Whiz (Topsail Whiz x Sugarita Chex)
In 2011, Conquistador Whiz became the first-ever thirdgeneration NRHA Million Dollar Sire, following the path of his sire, Topsail Whiz, and grandsire, Topsail Cody. Just four years later, the 1995 stallion added another accolade to his credentials when his progeny pushed him past two million in offspring earnings. To date, his 398 foals have collected more than $2,451,000 in combined NRHA Lifetime Earnings (LTE). Most notably, Conquistador Whiz sired 2005 NRHA Open Futurity champion KR Lil Conquistador, a 2002 gelding out of Smart Little Prize who earned more than $422,000 LTE during his career 62
Photos by John Brasseaux with NRHA Six Million Dollar rider Shawn Flarida and owners Jeff and Cheree Kirkbride. Before retiring to the breeding shed, Conquistador Whiz earned just over $100,000 LTE in his own right with NRHA Professionals Duane Latimer and Tom McCutcheon in the saddle. With Latimer, he claimed victories in the 2000 National Reining Breeders Classic Level (L)4 Open Derby and the 2000 NRHA Derby L4 Open, among other titles. In 2002, he competed with McCutcheon at the FEI World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain, helping earn the team gold and netting the individual silver medal. After being purchased by Silver Spurs Equine in 2008, Conquistador Whiz stood at sire at the ranch’s headquarters in Scottsdale, Arizona. Our condolences to Michael and Michelle Miola of Silver Spurs and all of Conquistador Whiz’s connections on the loss of this tremendous stallion.

I use it every day on a couple of horses that have older injuries and are a little bit stiffer. If any horses have a recent injury, or any sort of inflammation, I definitely put them on the TheraPlate as a preventative. What I like personally the most about TheraPlate is using it at horse shows. I use it on every horse I show— we do about twenty five-minute sessions every day before we ride them. If you have a horse that is a little uptight or you have to get their attention, I definitely think they become a lot more relaxed after the TheraPlate. It’s really a great product.”

TOM McCUTCHEON “We use TheraPlate on all of our horses, it’s a daily maintenance for us. We started using it at a horse show, and now it’s part of the daily routine. I think it’s been really good for the horses rehabbing. While TheraPlate works well if you have a problem, it is also good to use to make sure you don't have a problem. For my show horses that have been sound, I think TheraPlate is really good at keeping them sound. Some of the rehab horses that haven’t been exposed to it come in here and get the TheraPlate treatment and I think it shortens their rehab considerably.”

BERNARD FONCK
& Ricostyle Take the Equita Lyon Grand Prix Open Last to enter the show arena in Lyon in the $15,000-added Equita Lyon Grand Prix Open was NRHA Two Million Dollar Rider Bernard Fonck. Following a last-minute decision, the Belgian professional rode Ricostyle, a 6-year-old mare by Ricochet Rooster out of Gangsters Chrome now owned by Nuria Puig Ribas. With a 215.5 to beat, posted by French Charlene Aubreton aboard A Reminic Star owned by CJA Quarter Horse, Fonck showed the 6-yearold mare to a 216.5 for the win. “I rode this mare as a 2-year-old since she was bred by Manuel Bonzano who I worked for at the time,” said Fonck. “My assistant, Lorenzo De Simone, and Manuel both showed her and I also showed – and won – the Americana Futurity in 2017. When Manuel decided to sell her I thought she would fit Andreu [Nogue Puig] and they purchased her. She’s been doing well for Andreu and I am very happy to have showed – and won — here!” Aubreton and her mount by Lenas Starfish out of Miss Reminic Chex settled for reserve honors after holding the lead until the last horse. “I was really happy with the way my horse went and hoped until the very end my score would hold; of course Bernard is always a threat and he proved it here,” said the French rider. 70

Spanish Nuig wins the Equi
In a field of 14 riders, Andreu Nogue Puig of Spain conquered in France winning the $8,000-added Equita Lyon Grand Prix Non Pro aboard his A Whiz N Cash and a 216 score. "I'm very happy with my horse and with my mare [Ricostyle]," said Andreu about his horses. "Both of them were really 'wow' for me; they always waited for me and looked really good in the pen. This time around my trainer [Mirko Midili] could not be here, so [NRHA Two Million Dollar Rider] Bernard Fonck followed me and I have to thank him a lot for everything. He's a great horseman and of course every time I learn something more." Puig’s 4-year-old mount is by Custom Cash Advance out of A Whiz N Wranglers. The talented gelding piloted the 17-year-old to the 2018 Italian Reining Horse Non Pro Futurity Levels 4,3,2,1 bringing home an impressive $$61,566. With Rocostyle (Ricochet Rooster x Gangsters Chrome), he tied for third place honors with German Gina Schumacher riding Snip O Lution (Einsteins Revolution x Snip O Chex) owned by CS Ranch Management SA. Whizkey N Diamonds Reache The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) is proud to welcome another outstanding equine athlete to the Million Dollar Sire club: Whizkey N Diamonds. Owned by Rhodes River Ranch, Whizkey N Diamonds is by the all-time leading sire of NRHA money earners, Topsail Whiz, and out of Princess In Diamonds, one of the top three highest-producing NRHA dams to date. Bred by Cristin Schuetz, the 2006 buckskin stallion earned more than $216,335 in personal NRHA Lifetime Earnings (LTE) during his show career with NRHA Six Million Dollar Rider Shawn Flarida. After the pair placed third in the Level (L) 4 Open at the 2009 NRHA Futurity, then-owner Clinton Anderson took the stallion out of the reining pen to star in his Downunder Horsemanship Trick Training Series. In 2011, Whizkey N Diamonds came back strong, winning the 2011 Wimpys Little Step Derby, finishing top five in the Level 4 Open Derby at the National Reining Breeders Classic, and taking home reserve L4 Open honors at the 2011 NRHA Derby, all with Flarida in the saddle. Now, Whizkey N Diamonds stands at Oklahoma Equine Hospital in Goldsby, Oklahoma. His 312 competition-age offspring have followed in their sire’s footsteps at major events including the NRHA Futurity, NRHA Derby, and the National Reining Breeders Classic. Their success allowed the stallion to achieve this elite status after just seven breeding seasons, with his first foal crop reaching competition age in 2016. “I think it’s pretty impressive,” shared Sean McBurney, ranch manager for Rhodes River Ranch. “He only had 11 babies in his first foal crop. We’ve just tried to match him with the best mares.” 78

Voodoo’s owner, Michael Miola of Scottsdale, AZ, recalls of the stallion, "I love his look. He is a gorgeous athletic palomino that passes his athleticism to his offspring. On the ground, he is a puppy dog: When I'm in Oklahoma, I let him out and walk him around. He's is a sweetheart!" Michael Miola has a unique relationship with all his stallions and if you wonder why and how, well, here's his answer: "First of all we like to set up our stallions in stalls where they can see and talk to each other," he explains. "Horses are extremely social animals and we make sure that there are not confined to a stall with no interaction with others. When a new stallion comes in, he may be a little aggressive with his neighbors but it truly only lasts a few minutes after which he calms down and begins to socialize. I know each and every one of my stallion's personality — I know them inside out and, when they see me they all nuzzle up to me. Truth be told, I'd rather be with them than with people," he adds with a laugh. Michael and Michelle Miola have made a point of putting together a broad spectrum of stallions to choose from and their customer service — as told by customers themselves — is exceptional. Silver Spurs is the largest stallion owner and one of the biggest breeders in the U.S. selling over 2,500 breedings a year at reasonable prices. "Silver Spurs always strives to bring stallions with great bloodlines to our breeders at the lowest breeding fees possible so that they always have economical choices when breeding their next champion," added Miola. 81
NRHA Medications update on
Cannabinoids (CBD)
With “Respect the horse. Respect the sport.” being a foundational piece of NRHA’s mission, the National Reining Horse Association tasks itself with monitoring trends in competition, as well as new products presented to owners and riders. From time to time, new products appear on the equine supplement market claiming to enhance a horse’s performance. Over the last several years, cannabinoids have gained increased attention and have become nearly mainstream. In 2018 Congress passed the Agriculture Improvement Act, also known as the “Farm Bill.” The passage of this bill has created some potential confusion with respect to the use of “hemp” and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in competing horses. The bill defines “hemp” as both the plant Cannabis sativa L. and any derivatives of cannabis with less than 0.3% THC. With the enactment of this bill, “hemp” is no longer considered a controlled substance under federal law, but THC remains a Schedule I drug with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
82
NRHA Animal Welfare and Medications Rules prohibit cannabidiols (CBD) and their metabolites. While hemp does not contain more than 0.3% THC, it does contain CBD. CBD, both natural and synthetic forms, are likely to affect the performance of a horse due to its reported anxiolytic effects. This substance is no different than legitimate therapeutics that effect mentation and behavior in horses. Horses competing at NRHA events and under NRHA rules who test positive for natural cannabinoids, synthetic cannabinoids, and other cannabimimetics will be considered in violation of the rules. It is important to note that analytical methods are being implemented to detect CBD and similar cannabinoids. Caution is important when using these products as their composition widely varies and may not be representative of their label claims as there is no regulatory oversight from the FDA, nor guarantee of their safety in horses. It is always best to consult your veterinarian before administering any new substance to your horse. If you have questions on NRHA Animal Welfare and Medications Rules regarding medications, dosages, withdrawal times, etc., please contact the hotline at 1-800-733-2472.

Craig Schmersal Wins SWRHA Billing Ford Open Futurity on Shining On R
It was a rowdy, wild, and exciting evening at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum. The Southwest Reining Horse Association Billingsley Ford Open Futurity provides a last-minute opportunity for reiners across the country to evaluate their three-year-olds who will soon be competing in the big arena at Oklahoma City. 88
This year, it was Arizona's Craig Schmersal who claimed the $18,488 bounty. Schmersal was riding Shining On Ruf, owned by Vaughn Zimmerman. In addition to the great prize money, the win also came with a custom golf cart and prizes from Shelley Martinez, SmartPak, and Dennards. Schmersal has only been riding Shining On Ruf, by Not Ruf At All out of Boom Shine Sally, for two months. "Bobby Avila Jr. trained this horse, but broke his leg. He called and asked if I would like to try him. I said absolutely!" Schmersal recalled.
gsley Ruf
"So for the last two months he has been with me. Bobby had him super broke, so that was nice. He's been easy to follow, and tonight this horse was especially good." Schmersal expertly guided Shining On Ruf through Pattern 8, earning a score of 225. "He turned big and his circles were good and consistent every time, and his rollbacks are good every time. He's a really physical, really pretty horse," Schmersal said. "He's in the hunt for one of my three for the futurity. We've got to go home and regroup and make some decisions."
He added, "I thank Bobby for giving me the shot and calling me when he got hurt, and to Justin and Vaughn Zimmerman for going along with it. We've had a lot of fun riding for those guys. They're a fun group." Andrea Fappani rode Gotta Shiney Spook, owned by Wright Reining LLC, to tie for second in the level 4 with a 224.5. The reserve co-championship came with a check for $9,847. Gotta Shiney Spook is by Spooks Gotta Whiz out of Shiney Diamond Lady.

Cade McCutcheon Wins Again!
92
Cade McCutcheon has been on a roll his first year as a professional trainer, and on Saturday night added an additional $5,621 to his lifetime earnings when he won the Level 2 championship on Tidal To The Buckles. Along with other prizes, the win also came with a saddle sponsored by Shelley Martinez.
"This horse is a sweetheart all the time, and he just keeps getting better. We had some things we had to work on after Tulsa, but he's gotten better. He wants to help all the time, and it makes my life easier," McCutcheon said. "Tonight he was really good and easy to show. There were a few places he could have been a little stronger, but that was just green spots. He wanted to be on my side the whole time."
Tidal To The Buckles, by Show Me The Buckles out of Starlights Tidalwave, is owned by Rebeca Martin.
Martin, who also owns Tidal To The Buckle's sire, noted that the colt's attitude has been there from
day one. "He's always been a sweetheart, and Cade has brought out the best in him. I have liked Cade and his riding for a couple years already. He's incredible," she said. "I thank Tom (McCutcheon) for taking in Buckles as a stallion. Because of that I brought all my Buckle babies here, and they're in the best hands possible." McCutcheon is now looking towards the NRHA futurity. "I feel pretty good about my horses now
going to the futurity," he said. "I thank Robin, my parents, and everyone at the barn. There are 20 or 30 people I could thank, but we don't have that much time." Finishing second in the Open Level 2 was Francesco Martinotti and Smoking Trash, owned by Enjoy LLC. The pair also placed in the Level 3, winning $3,657. Smoking Trash is by Gunnatrashya out of Snip O Gun. 93

95
Brian Bell and Bamn Bam won the Open Level 3 and tied for reserve in the Level 4 with a 224.5, winning $20,228, a saddle sponsored by Shelley Martinez, and other prizes from SmartPak and Dennards. 96
Competing as draw 5, Bell and Bamn Bam put pressure on the field from the start. "He turned really big both ways, and circled really good. He stopped super big two out of three times. We had a little rollback trouble on one stop, but he was great," Bell recalled. "This horse has always been easy about everything, but rollbacks have been a struggle. He's getting it figured out now." Bell has had his eye on Bamn Bam, by Yellow Jersey out of Fabulous Guns, since the colt was a two-year-old. "Me and one of my customers, Jenna Webb, bought him together. We were third at the
Brian Bell Pilots Bamn Bam to Open Level 3 Championship
Colorado Summer Slide, and now we did good here," he said. "He just had a bunch of stop and turnaround, and was pretty quiet. I just wanted him." So how is Bell feeling going into Oklahoma City? "I'm confident. When you mark a 224.5 before the futurity, you're ready to go," he said. "I thank my wife Naike, my sister, and Jenna Webb. I bought this horse from Ruben Vandorp. I'm really thankful to all the people that have been a part of this horse," he said.
There was a three-way tie for second in the Level 3. Dany Tremblay had two horses, Gunnastepya and Lil Gun Affair, and Martin Larcombe rode Drinkin Moonshine, all of which marked a 222. That score also tied them for eighth in the Level 4, bringing total earning to $8,389. Gunnastepya (Gunnatrashya x SDP A Lasting Step) is owned by ADH-Mor Ranch, while Lil Gun Affair (Lil Joe Cash x Gun Affair) is owned by Martin Brisebois/ Tremblay Reining Horses LLC. Drinkin Moonshine (Shine Chic Shine x Wimpy Little Girl) is owned by Lance Griffin.

Mandy McCutcheon Wins Level 4 C
The Custom Made Dunit Non Pro Futurity was
held Friday, October 25, at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum in Ardmore, Okla. The one go-round event provides reiners looking towards Oklahoma City a chance to compete for big money and last-minute experience. 100
Championship on Coronas At Night
Mandy McCutcheon’s entry, Coronas At Night, has shown she has all the talent to compete in the upper echelons of reining competition - but a win hadn’t happened yet. “She has had her ups and downs this fall. She’s always had enough talent, and all her maneuvers have been good. She’s just had some quirks we’ve had to overcome,” McCutcheon said. “We were just trying to see what we need to do to get her ready for the big futurity.”If Friday’s run is any indication, the pair is on the right track, marking a 219.5 to win $5,594. “She just walked in and did everything I asked her to do. She stayed real hooked up. She walked in and turned well. We might have had a turn penalty on my first turn, but I was really happy
with her,” McCutcheon said. “She was much better this week than she’s been at other shows.” Mandy and her husband Tom raised Coronas At Night, by Gunners Special Nite out of One Last Corona. “We had raised a couple of others out of her dam that I did well with,” she said. With 30 horses at the SWRHA Futurity and Horse Show, the McCutcheon crew is going many directions. “Cade, Carlee, Tom, Fernando, and Debbie are all showing here, so we’re staying busy,” she said. “It takes a whole village. All the people in the barn play a part in getting me where I need to go. We are all always looking out for each other.” 101

Addisyn Schmersal & Black Gun
Addisyn Schmersal has never shown a futurity horse, with Black Face Gun she has now won big money at two of the three events they’ve competed at. Scoring a 215.5, the pair won the Non Pro Levels 1 and 2, and placed in Levels 3 and 4, for earnings totaling $5,339.”I showed him in Tulsa but overspun, and then I showed him at Best of the West and won the Level 1 & 2. He’s a really fun horse. I love to circle him, and his stops are fun, too. He’s really sweet,” she said of Black Gun Face, by Pale Face Dunit out of Blazing In Black. “The first couple of days riding him were difficult because I’ve never had a threeyear-old to ride, but it’s been fun ever since.” Despite a small bobble, Schmersal noted most of Friday’s run was good. “He spun really 104
well both ways. I overspun a bit on the second one. Our left circles were good. When we changed leads, he spooked at the judges, but everything else was really good,” she said. “It was fun to watch my mom show today. I didn’t get to watch all of it because I was right after her.”Schmersal is done showing in Ardmore, but will be helping her father with his futurity horses on Saturday. “I thank my parents for letting me show this horse, and all our help, my friends, and my family,” she said.
Ronny Colston and Colonels Special Gun, by Gunners Special Nite out of Miss Cielo, finished second in the Level 2, and placed in levels 3 and 4 to win $3,181. Robin Mazzocca rode My Dad Is Shiney to finish reserve in the Level 1 and place in levels 2 through 4, for $2,678. My Dad Is Shiney is by Smart And Shiney out of Miss Whizarima.

Hit-and-Run Driver Arrested in Lake View Terrace
A suspected hit-and-run driver has been arrested after being accused of killing two horses and critically injuring the married couple riding them in a Lake View Terrace crash, authorities said Saturday. Rolando Garcia, 32, was driving along Foothill Boulevard near Wheatland Avenue when he
struck the horseback riders about 9:40 p.m. on Friday, according to LAPD. The 1998 Chevrolet Astro Van he was driving then collided into a wall and came to a stop. He has been arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, police said. Both horses were pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said, and the riders were left severely injured. They have since been listed in stable condition.
Footage of the crash site shows the minivan, with its front end ripped off, just outside the gate of a home. A website established to collect funds for the injured couple set up by family friend Lesly Diaz described them as Polo and his wife, Alejandra. "Last night after going trailing, they were struck by a minivan as they reached their boarding

They are pictured in a photo included on a fundraising website. facility," Diaz wrote. The couple suffered numerous broken bones, including fractured vertebrae, the friend said. "(The) horses were unfortunately killed instantly. Recovery can be lengthy for Polo and his wife Alejandra." Kevin Davis, president of the local Foothill Trails District Neighborhood Council, said horseback riding at night is a safety issue local leaders are trying to fix. "It's not unusual and it has been an ongoing concern for us because we've had other people killed or injured in the area," Davis said. "We're working to try to increase equestrian safety, but unfortunately based on what happened last night, our efforts still need to be increased." Bail for Garcia was set at $50,000 pending his initial court appearance, Los Angeles County booking records show. He had no prior criminal convictions listed in Los Angeles County Superior Court records. No other details have been released. KTLA's Brian Day contributed to this report. 108

Colonels Big Nite is by Gunners Special Nite out of Miss Hickory Tari. "This horse is owned by a group of guys who have been in my barn a couple years now. I was really happy with him. He's a little bit green, but he gets better and better all the time," McCutcheon said. McCutcheon said he was pleased with the horse's performance. "Overall I was happy with him. Hopefully between now and the futurity he'll get better. I think he really turned a corner at this horse show. I feel like we're on the right track," he said. Josh Visser brought Inwhizzable Dream to the SWRHA Futurity with a plan to simply have a smooth run before Oklahoma City, and wound up with the Level 1 championship. They also placed in the Level 2, bringing total earnings to $4,395. "I was just hoping to have a nice, confidence building run today and just show him without him thinking he was getting shown. He was really honest everywhere. I couldn't have asked for a purer run," Visser said. "I just came in here trying to step him up a little bit without putting too much stress on him. I'm more focused on the big futurity in a few weeks so I just cruised him around and kept him happy. I'm very confident about the futurity now." Inwhizzable Dream, owned by Terry Martin, is by Visser's stallion Magnum With A Dream and out of Adarable. "This customer raised this colt, and this is that dam's first foal. We're very excited about that cross," Visser said. "I thank the owners for trusting me with him and for breeding to our stallion. I also got some help from Gunny Mathison on his rundowns. It's a team effort for sure." Dalton Vanlandingham rode Not Ruf Again to a score of 216.5 to finish second in the Open Level 1 and place in the Level 2, collecting $2,455. Ginger Schmersal Wins Non Pro Level 3 and Non Pro Prime Time on Mobstop
Ginger Schmersal hadn't been in the market for a futurity horse. She'd won the Rocky Mountain Reining Horse Association Non Pro Futurity on Black Gun Face. But when her daughter Addisyn's horse was lost to colic, it was a no-brainer for her to pass him on. "It was hard to give him up, but there was no hesitation. She needed a horse. She works hard at it - harder than I do. She eats, breathes, and sleeps it, and puts the time in," Schmersal said. The search was on, and she found Mobstop, a three-year-old mare by HF Mobster out of Stop Little Sister. "I purchased her from Connie and Amy Stoney in Tulsa at the beginning of September. She's new to me and to the program, but the Stoneys did a great job getting her to where she is, and then she's had a crash course with our program," she said. Schmersal took the mare to the Best of the West, finishing near the top of the leaderboard and pocketing close to $5,000. "She was super out there. I'm tickled with her." She added, "She is super-minded. She has handled all the pressure we put on her."At the SWRHA Futurity, Schmersal and the mare marked a 217.5 to finish second in the Level 4, and 122
win the Level 3 and Prime Time, collecting $6,792. "She was fantastic today. In the makeup pen she was a little uptight. It was cold and we didn't have anywhere to lunge yesterday or today because of the weather, and she's the type that needs to be out to play a bit. "I got her out early and took my time warming up. I missed, like, six lead changes out there on her, but the minute we walked through the gate she took a deep breath and was with me the whole time. I was stunned," Schmersal said."She showed like a champ. She did that with me at the Best of the West. I think she's a show horse and wants to be by herself and have the stage." Schmersal noted that Friday's performance gave her more confidence going into Oklahoma City for the Futurity. "I thank my husband. Without him I wouldn't be where I am. Of course I thank Connie and Amy Stoney, as well as our staff, friends, family and customers that are there to support us," she said. Kelle Smith and Spookadoodlede, by Tricked Out Spook out of Tivitos Top Starlet, finished reserve in the Level 3 and Prime Time with a 216.5, and also placed fourth in the Level 4. All totaled, Smith won $4,380.

Dun It For Chex 1996–2019
NRHA Hall of Fame inductee and Million Dollar Dam Dun It For Chex was humanely euthanized at age 23 on Monday, September 23. Bred by Pat Warren, Dun It For Chex was sired by NRHA Six Million Dollar Sire Hollywood Dun It and out of Silver N Blue Chex. Cardinal Hill Training Center purchased her in 2014 and later retired her from an extremely successful breeding career to enjoy a life of luxury in Aubrey, Texas. Although she never competed, the mare’s impressive progeny, with combined earnings of more than $1,034,461 to date, testifies to her superiority as a dam. Currently, 22 of her 32 offspring—five of which are not yet performance-age—have acquired NRHA earnings, including two that have more than $100,000 in NRHA LTE and several others that are close to reaching that mark. Her foals have finished with top honors at major events such as the NRHA Futurity and Derby, the FEI World Equestrian Games™, the National Reining Breeders Classic, and more. Notably, she produced Dun It For Whizkey, a 2014 stallion that’s experienced great success in the show pen under the guidance of NRHA Professional Franco Bertolani. The stallion has acquired more than $256,018 in NRHA LTE and earned prestigious titles including the 2016 NRHA Futurity L4 Open reserve championship.

The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) honors five sires that have recently achieved new multi-million-dollar milestones in offspring earnings.
Smart Chic Olena
NRHA Hall of Fame inductee Smart Chic Olena (Smart Little Lena x Gay Sugar Chic), who was humanely euthanized in 2012, is now an NRHA Seven Million Dollar Sire.
