Italian Reining Horse Association Dates for 2019 IRHA/IRHBA/NRHA Futurity
New date: November 22-30, 2019 CremonaFiere—Cremona, Italy Roberto Cuoghi, president of the Italian Reining Horse Association (IRHA), announced that on March 5 the IRHA Board of Directors voted to change the dates of the 2019 IRHA/IRHBA/ NRHA Futurity—held concurrently with the finals of the Italian Championship—to November 22-30. The decision was made in accordance with the organizing committee and main partners of the event following the 2019 NRHA Futurity date change announced last week.
“Reining today is truly an international sport and I believe it would hurt our industry to host the finals of two of the world’s most important events on the same date,” said Cuoghi. “Following the decision made by NRHA to move the dates back, we took on the responsibility of doing our utmost to allow owners, breeders, and European athletes to make their way to Oklahoma City for the NRHA Futurity finals. The response worldwide has been positive and I would like to thank the organizing committee and main partners of the event for accepting this challenge.”

2019 & 2020 All American Quarter Horse Congress
Quarter Horse Congress stays on same dates for 2019; Moves up one week in 2020 October 1 – 27, 2019 September 22 – October 18, 2020
The dates for the 53rd annual All American Quarter Horse Congress, held October 1 – 27, 2019, have been set by the Ohio Quarter Horse Association. The dates for the 2020 Congress have moved up one week to take place from September 22 – October 18, 2020. The decision is based in large part on increasing the window between the Congress and the AQHA World Show. In the past, these shows have been back-to-back with very few days in between to recover and prepare for the Open/Amateur AQHA World Show. In 2018, there were three days in between the shows. The new date implementation will take effect in 2020 in hopes that exhibitors and attendees will have time to plan accordingly. OQHA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Scott Myers, discusses the reason for the change. “The schedule right now presents some challenges with the AQHA Open/Amateur World Show, forcing exhibitors to get ready and compete at the two premier shows in the coun-

We consider the welfare of our horses the utmost priority, and we believe this will be beneficial to our show and the industry as a whole.” This change will increase the window of time needed in between the Congress and the World Show for exhibitors to better prepare with a longer recovery period. This year’s Congress will continue to be held October 1 – 27, 2019 and the date change will be implemented in 2020.
2019 NRHA Futurity Dates Finalized
In consideration of members’ needs for making travel plans, the NRHA Board of Directors finalized its decision regarding 2019 NRHA Futurity & Adequan North American Affiliate Championship Show dates. The board held a discussion at the 2019 NRHA Convention & Awards earlier this month and reconvened on February 25 to address the topic again. Members also discussed this topic widely at the NRHA Convention expressing a variety of opinions, concerns, and benefits. With a majority in favor, the NRHA Board of Directors voted to approve moving the 2019 NRHA Futurity dates back to November 28-December 7. The Aged Events Committee will be considering the detailed show schedule in the near future with their recommendation to go to the board at their April meeting. More details will be shared on nrhafuturity.com as they become available.

AQHA Meets with the European Commission
AQHA recently met with the European Commission to clarify import/export support. By AQHA Executive Vice President Craig Huffhines On January 11, AQHA Chief International Officer Dr. Anna Morrison, Federation of European Quarter Horse Associations President Dr. Andrew Dren and I met with Dr. Alf-Eckbert FĂźssel, deputy head of animal health and welfare for the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium. The purpose of this visit was to clarify items related to the EU laws that went into place on November 1, 2018, including requirements for zootechnical certificates, so that AQHA could ensure it is following the appropriate steps to support AQHA members and facilitate trade with members in the European Union. I've put together a summary of important information that AQHA learned, as well as updates to the process AQHA has undertaken to support zootechnical certificate requirements.
Zootechnical Certificates Beginning on November 1, 2018, the European Union adopted new regulations related to animal breeding organizations and processes. Among these regulations was the requirement for zootechnical certificates for breeding animals and their germinal products (semen, embryos, etc.). While it was originally understood to be a requirement of import, AQHA has learned that the primary purpose of the zootechnical certificate is to ensure the breeding animal or the resulting offspring of the breeding animal or germinal products will be eligible for entry into the studbook of origin (AQHA), and therefore any daughter studbooks of AQHA in the European Union. The implications of zootechnical certificates for live animals versus germinal products vary slightly, and are summarized as follows: Live Animals: Zootechnical certificates are not required as an import document, except to identify the animal as a registered animal, therefore exempting the importer from certain customs taxes. EU law1 allows registration certificates from recognized breeding bodies, such as AQHA, to be utilized in place of the model zootechnical certificate form. However, in order to create a uniform set of information that can be easily understood at various import locations throughout the EU, AQHA will translate an animal's registration information into the model zootechnical certificate form to accompany live animal exports to the EU.
18
Exporters in need of a zootechnical certificate for live animals can contact AQHA by email at export@aqha.org to make this request. Included in the request should be the breeding animal name, registration number and name of the facility/individual facilitating the export. In turn, AQHA will provide by email a completed zootechnical certificate for the animal. Semen and other Germinal Products: Zootechnical certificates are not required as an import document by the EU, but rather provide a guarantee that the resulting foals may be eligible for entry into the studbook of origin, and therefore daughter studbooks in the European Union. Because of this, zootechnical certificates might be required for semen that is already being stored in the European Union. Completing zootechnical certificate requirements in conjunction with an export to the EU might help make the process smoother. Because zootechnical certificates for semen and other germinal products include information that AQHA cannot attest to, such as semen storage/identification information, semen collection and storage centers are authorized to complete the certificates utilizing the supplemental information provided by AQHA. Exporters in need of registration and genetic test information for zootechnical certificates for semen and other germinal products can contact AQHA by email at export@aqha.org to request information. Included in the request should be the breeding animal name, registration number, an indication of whether the certificate is for semen or other germinal products, and the name of the facility/individual preparing the zootechnical certificate. In turn, AQHA will provide by email a letter attesting to the validity of the registration and genetic test information provided, as well as the purpose for which it is provided, a four-generation pedigree and genetic test results for the breeding animal. While the European Commission has expressed its support of the process AQHA has enacted for zootechnical certificates, some AQHA affiliates in the EU are still navigating questions and concerns with their in-country competent authorities. AQHA continues to support open communication with its affiliates and their competent authorities to ensure that AQHA members in and outside of the EU do not experience trade disruptions. Questions regarding zootechnical certificates and AQHA's commitment to support American Quarter Horse breeders in meeting EU regulations can be directed to export@aqha.org. Questions regarding AQHA's international programs or EU support can be directed to international@aqha.org.

Pro Management Joins NRHA Team to Manage NRHA Futurity and Derby Change is on the horizon for the National Reining Horse Association’s (NRHA) Futurity and Derby. For the first time since their premiere, a management company will take on a broader scope of planning, preparation, and implementation of those events. The magnitude of these two events requires a team experienced with big shows and high stakes, which is why Pro Management, Inc. of Byars, Okla., will be taking the reins. This collaboration combines NRHA’s already well-established, world-class events with Pro Management’s veteran staff and event production expertise. Pro Management currently manages three of the top 13 NRHA-approved shows each year, including the National Reining Breeders Classic, the Tulsa Reining Classic, and the Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity. Owner Cheryl Cody, along with key staff members, also managed the reining at the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games in Tryon, North Carolina.“Pro Management brings a level of experience to our signature events that exhibitors have come to appreciate,” NRHA Executive Director Gary Carpenter said. “Our Strategic Plan identified the prospect of outsourcing our events two years ago. I’m confident that our members will enjoy the service they will provide.” NRHA President Mike Hancock echoed those sentiments. “We wanted to put show management in the hands of people who do it every day, which would allow us to focus what we do best – running the NRHA and serving the needs of our 15,000 members.” He added, “We are confident in Pro Management’s ability to handle shows of this magnitude.” The NRHA Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship Show is the world’s largest reining event with nearly 4,000 entries in all classes. It includes the 3-year-old Futurity, with a guaranteed $150,000 to the champion, as well as the Adequan® North American Affiliate Championships. The NRHA Derby features more than $600,000 in added money and hosts the Interscholastic Equestrian Association Western Championships. “It’s truly an honor to be part of these events, and we are very excited about them,” Cheryl Cody said. “NRHA has done an incredible job of growing them over the years, and we are confident that our partnership with NRHA will continue that trend.” NRHA and Pro Management staff members have spent countless hours working out the logistics of the transition, something that Cody notes will be advantageous moving forward. “Everyone on the NRHA staff has been amazing to work with, and together we are doing what is necessary to make this change as seamless as possible for the contestants and exhibitors,” she said. Although first payments for the Futurity have already been sent to the NRHA Office, subsequent payments, entries, and questions will be handled by the Pro Management staff in the Byars office. Pro Management will also be handling the event media, trade shows, and stabling management, as well as stall sponsorships and placements. For information on the events, people can either call the NRHA number (405-946-7400) and the call will be transferred or call direct to the NRHA Events line at Pro Management at 580-759-2424.

Angelina Jolie & Taylor Sheridan Team for Thriller

Jolie would star while Sheridan, who wrote the script, will direct, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Bron Studios, which was involved in recent movies such as The Mule, Assassination Nation and A Simple Favor, is producing. Also producing are Steven Zaillian (Moneyball, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) and Garrett Basch via their Film Rites banner. The project adapts a book by Michael Koryta, but sources say the feature will veer away from certain points. The novel told of a teen in a witness protection program hiding out from a pair of killers in a wilderness skills program while a fire engulfs Montana. Sheridan’s script is described as being femaledriven (the book’s female lead ran a fire lookout tower before being swept into the teen’s troubled life) and a

Sheridan was an actor who segued to writing, making a name for himself by penning acclaimed gritty thrillers such as Sicario and Hell or High Water, for which he garnered an Oscar nomination. He made his directorial debut with Wind River, a thriller starring Jeremy Renner. Sheridan also created the Kevin Costner drama series Yellowstone. The plan is for him to shoot Those Who Wish Me Dead after wrapping up the second season of the Paramount Network show. Sheridan was gearing up to shoot a black-ops thriller titled F.A.S.T. that was to have starred Chris Pratt and to have gone into production this summer, but switched gears at the last minute. It is unclear what will happen to F.A.S.T. now. Jolie, who has not appeared on the big screen since 2015’s By the Sea, next stars in Maleficent 2, which Disney is set to release in 2020.

2018 NRHA Profession Dan Huss Each year, the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) affiliates are invited to nominate their favorite NRHA Professionals for top honors in one of the following categories: Professional Horseman of the Year, Professional Horsewoman of the Year, Non Pro Coach of the Year, Youth Coach of the Year, and Up-and-Coming Trainer of the Year. Nominees must exemplify excellence in the reining community and are chosen based on their mastery and contribution to promoting the sport of reining and NRHA. Below are the winners for each category, who will receive their award at the 2019 NRHA Convention & Awards Banquet held February 6-9 in Oklahoma City.
NRHA Professional Horseman of the Year – Dan Huss
Dan Huss’ career in the saddle began over 30 years ago. Pursuing his passion, he double majored in science and equestrian studies at the University of Findlay, where he stayed to teach for 20 years. It was in the early 2000s when Huss and his wife, Wendy, decided to instead pursue the training process he had developed at Findlay (breaking down each maneuver into a few steps, allowing a client to master it, and then moving on to the next). Their first stop was Double Run Farms in North Carolina, where Huss trained Wimpys Little Step, a well-known sire in the reining industry who went on to win the 2002 NRHA Futurity. The adventure didn’t stop there; Chicago, Illinois was where they then spent the next three years, developing a successful training program for non pro rider, Jose Vasquez. In 2006, Dan and Wendy Huss were able to set up Even Odd Farms, their own training facility. Here, they made a name for themselves before moving to Scottsdale, Arizona for its potential to grow their business in the reining industry. Huss continues to coach top level non pros and youth riders at Huss Performance Horses while also bringing home big NRHA titles himself. His NRHA Lifetime Earnings (LTE) exceed $550,000 with many championship titles and finalist qualifications in the NRHA Derby, NRHA Futurity, All American Quarter Horse Congress, and many more. He also helped the U.S. Reining Team bring home a gold medal in the FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) in 2018 where he also took home an individual silver medal. To top off his accomplishments, not only a reiner 28
Abby Lengel but also as a horseman, was his crowd-wowing, bridleless run on Ms Dreamy at the AQHA World Championship Show in the Senior Reining. That moment will remain a part of reining history.
NRHA Professional Horsewoman of the Year – Abby Lengel
Abby Lengel’s passion for reining was sparked by a chance lesson taken on a reining horse with Drake Johnson, a Colorado NRHA Professional. Since 2007, when her reining career got its start in youth 1418 and rookie competitions, the Colorado native has had great success in the show arena as an assistant trainer and as a non pro coach. Lengel graduated with a degree in Equine Industry and Business at West Texas A&M University. Shortly after she started working as an assistant trainer for NRHA Million Dollar Rider Casey Deary. Between the trust Deary instilled in her early on with training high-end prospects and the passion she brings into the sport – from mucking stalls to training a horse off of the release of pressure – her talent is evident. She credits a great deal of success to the “corrective criticism” and encouragement Deary has provided since 2014. She continues to excel, placing high in the biggest NRHA competitions, all while keeping the trust of the horse as well as the horses’ mental health front of mind.
NRHA Non Pro Coach of the Year – Dave Moore
With over 20 years of experience and dedication to the sport of reining, Dave Moore has been said to “exemplify what NRHA stands for.” This is demonstrated through his promotion of reining from the local to national levels. Moore and his wife Kim live in Southwest Ranches, Florida where their ranch, Sheridan Oaks Stables, exists as a hub to many reining clinics and lessons. Moore has coached numerous youth, open, and non pro circuit champions; however, he “does not place emphasis on winning, but being the best that you and your partner can be on any given day.” His nomination said, “He teaches his students to respect the sport and their partner.” His talents extend past teaching the skills needed to be a good horseman and successfully show in reining. The passion Moore holds for horses and reining show every time he is with a student as “he has no

clue what a one-hour lesson is.” The time spent with his students always exceeds the allotted time; he even makes himself available on his days off from work. He “is very selfless and is always encouraging all exhibitors, not just the members in his barn, to be the best they can be.” During his involvement within NRHA, Moore has had much success in the show ring as an exhibitor, a judge, and most importantly, a coach.
NRHA Youth Coach of the Year – Dean Latimer
Dean Latimer of Marietta, Oklahoma first showed with NRHA in 1985. With over 30 years dedicated to the sport as an exhibitor, judge, and trainer, Latimer’s knowledge of NRHA Rules and Regulations accentuates his credibility in teaching youth reiners. As an “excellent, patient mentor,” the lessons taught in the arena by Latimer carry through to other parts of life for many. His ability to never miss a step on top of his “articulate and detailed” explanations cause him to be an impeccable coach. He is known to talk his students through each maneuver of the pattern they are about to run, provide encouragement before go-time, and end with “’now go have some fun.’” Latimer not only excels in coaching, but also in being a skilled rider in the show pen. Boasting an NRHA LTE in excess of $160,000, he has worked for both Loomis Ranch and Arcese Quarter Horses as well as shown in the NRHA Futurity, NRHA Derby, and many more elite shows. Latimer has also had individual success at the All American Quarter Horse Congress and has had many students achieve accolades in prestigious events as well—an exhibition of his premier coaching abilities! His passion for the sport doesn’t stop there. He raises, trains, and sells his own horses, sits on the NRHA Judges Committee, assists with the NRHA Judges School, and has been a large advocate in NRHA’s Respect the Horse. Respect the Sport. campaign.
NRHA Up-and-Coming Trainer of the Year – Trent Harvey
Trent Harvey became a member of NRHA in 2013 and has had much success within the industry as both a trainer and rider. Spending a combined five years working as an assistant trainer to NRHA Million Dollar Riders Casey Deary and Jordan Larson, he has learned from some
Trent Harvey of the best in the industry. Not only does his training combine the finest techniques from Deary and Larson, but his family’s longstanding roots in the sport ignite a separate passion altogether. Dale Harvey, Trent’s father, was an NRHA Member for over 20 years, and remains a big inspiration to the reining community as a whole, even after his passing in 2017. “Following the death of his father, [Trent] has easily stepped into his shoes.” Beyond helping future generations of reiners in Marietta, Oklahoma, Harvey continues to make big marks in the show pen. He has won many awards and titles at NRHA events such as the NRHA Derby and NRHA Futurity with over $100,000 in NRHA LTE. There is no doubt that he is qualified to earn the Up-and-Coming Trainer of the Year title as “a knowledgeable horseman and all-around good guy.” 29

EBONY SHINES MAKES NRHA HISTORY
Since its inception in 1966, the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) has seen thirty-eight stallions cross the coveted NRHA Million Dollar Sire mark. After the completion of several NRHA events this weekend, however, history was made when the offspring of 2016 NRHA Hall of Fame inductee Ebony Shines earned her enough to unofficially become the first NRHA Million Dollar Dam. The 19-year-old mare Ebony Shines is by NRHA Four Million Dollar Sire and Hall of Fame inductee Shining Spark and out of Ebony Whiz (by NRHA Twelve Million Dollar Sire and Hall of Fame inductee Topsail Whiz). Bred by Bob Loomis, the palomino is currently owned by Rosanne Sternberg and lives at Sterling Ranch in Aubrey, Texas. Ebony Shines spent approximately one year in the show pen between 2004 and 2005. With NRHA Professional Jerry Fowler aboard, the mare earned more than $25,000 while exhibiting at shows such as the National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) and the South Country Derby. The pair’s most significant money earnings came during the 2004 NRHA Derby with a level (L)2 open championship, an L3 reserve championship, and an L4 top ten finish. In 2004, Ebony Shines also began her career within the breeding shed where she found her true success. To date, the dam has produced 16 foals with NRHA earnings, including four with more than $100,000 in NRHA Lifetime Earnings (LTE). These foals have earned top finishes at the NRHA Futurity and Derby as well as the NRBC. When we asked Rosanne Sternberg about Ebony Shines and this historical achievement she had this to say, “I have owned ‘Ebony’ for 10 years and purchased her from Howard Mann (Manntana, LLC) when I bought her second foal, Shiners Chic, who was a 3-year-old at that time. I
bought her because she seemed perfect to cross on 40
my stallion, Smart Spook, and was out of Ebony Whiz, a good daughter of the legendary Ebony Chex. Apart from a couple of her foals, I have owned or raised all her offspring and have watched her produce great performance horses, one after the other. Her foals have gone to South America and Europe and several have become legends in reining, including Shiners Chic, the second highest money earning Smart Chic Olena offspring at $295,247, still showing after 10 years of competition; NRHA Open Futurity Co-Champion Shine N Spook; and several other remarkable show horses. The beautiful palomino has brought me much joy as a broodmare and many people happiness and success as a performance horse producer. I look forward to her offspring continuing to win and maybe reaching the second million with her!” Before last weekend, Ebony was less than $2,000 shy of crossing the million dollar mark. Warwick Schiller and his Shine Spook Shine (by Smart Spook) earned more than $1,200 at Reining by the Bay to add to the mare’s offspring earnings. At One HOT Reining – One HOT Summer Slide, two horse and rider combinations added nearly $1,000 to Ebony’s total – Shauna Larcombe with Sternberg’s Smart Spook Shines (by Smart Spook) and Sean Pulley with his Spooks Shiner (by Smart Spook). In addition, Ebony’s Hang Ten And Shine (by Hang Ten Surprize) had a great performance in the NRHA European Open Derby finals with Rieky Young at the reins, helping push the elite mare over the NRHA Million Dollar Dam mark.
Her most notable offspring include:
Shiners Chic (by Smart Chic Olena, owned by Rosanne Sternberg): NRHA LTE over $295,247 Shine N Spook (by Smart Spook, owned by Ubere Agropecuaria Eireli): NRHA LTE over $219,826 Shine Chic Shine (by Smart Chic Olena, owned by Amabile & Strusiner): NRHA LTE over $148,714 Hang Ten And Shine (by Hang Ten Surprize, owned by Christine Brazeau): NRHA LTE over $108,515

Attractive purse in Bronze Trophies and Maturities
AMERICANA 2019, Sept 4-8 Messe Augsburg, Germany €40,000-added Bronze Trophy Open Reining
For many years, the decision of the NRHA World Champion was made in the AMERICANA Bronze Trophy, and this event is still a must for those who are fighting for the World Championship. In 2017, NRHA 2 Million Dollar Rider Bernard Fonck claimed the Open Trophy aboard What A Wave – those who watched his spectacular performance, which earned a 231, during the evening show will certainly not forget it. And the two finished the year as NRHA Open World Champion. In 2019, the AMERICANA Bronze Trophy Open will offer a purse of €40,000-added – plus a €7,000-added Intermediate Open. The final will be during the Friady evening show – another reason why top reiners love AMERICANA. Where else in Europe can you ride in front of 5,000 spectators?
This year, there will also be a €10,000-added Non Pro and a €7,000-added Intermediate Non Pro plus a €5,000-added Maturity Open and a €4,000-added Maturity Non Pro. European Championship Cutting and ERCHA Futurity Another main attraction of AMERICANA are the cattle classes. There is the European Championship Cutting Open with a purse of €12,000-added plus the €6,000-added Non Pro European Championship. In 2017, it was Italian cutter Martina Annovazzi who claimed the Open title aboard Highbrow Time scoring a 154 in the final. Another fine discipline which is seldom seen at a show in Germany is the Reined Cow Horse – a discipline which has always been inseparable from AMERICANA. Here, the first ERCHA European Reined Cow Horse Futurity was organized. And ever since, the ERCHA Futurity has been part of AMERICANA every two years. This year, the Futurity offers a purse of €17,000-added. Also, there will be a €9,000-added ERCHA Nations Cup (team and individual ranking).
€5,000-added each in Trail and Ranch Riding Open, for the first time with Ranch Riding Non Pro
AMERICANA also offers top class sport in Trail and Ranch Riding with a €5,000-added European Championship Trail and a €5,000-added European Championship Ranch Riding Open. Also, there will be a €3,000-added Ranch Riding Non Pro. The European Championship Ranch Riding will be held in a go-round plus a final which will be part of the Friday evening show. For riders, AMERICANA will start on September 1. The competition schedule will be online starting mid-March. In May, entry forms will be available on www.americana.de.
Order your tickets for the evening shows now Tickets for the AMERICANA evening shows and events are available on www.americana.de or by calling -49 (0)1806 – 999 000. PATRICK FLAHERTY FLAHERTY PERFORMANCE
Born and raised in Eastern Washington, Patrick didn’t stand much of a chance at a life without horses. With a mom as a doctor and a dad who ran a packing business, Patrick’s first babysitter was a 16 hand black mare.
Vista Farm but opened up shop as Patrick Flaherty Performance Horses, LLC; a dream that at times seemed would take a long time to become a reality. Patrick Flaherty Performance Horses currently resides at Outwest Stallion Station in Scottsdale, AZ. Patrick’s most recent accomplishments include being a multiple NRHA Futurity Finalist, multiple Derby and Futurity Champion and Reserve Championships throughout the Southwest as well as at other major NRHA events and the 2018 AQHA Professional Horsemen’s Most Valuable Professional presented by the AZAQHA. Although he has many titles, his most loved title is being Dad to his son, Logan and daughter, Layla. He has had his judging card since Fall of 2011 and looks forward to participating from the other side of the show pen.
“My dad would put me on Shamrock and let her take me around while he did the chores.” Patrick has not gotten off a horse since he could sit up. He showed as a youth and began seeking a higher level of horsemanship.
He began spending summers working for Al Dunning as a freshman in high school. He continued to spend every break from school with Al until he decided he did not want to come home. He finished high school a year early and began working full time at Almosta Ranch in the Fall of 2001. In addition to learning the ways of the Reining, Cutting, and Working Cow Horse, Patrick

learned about life and the importance of a solid reputation.
“Working for Al, I was able to see how to make a business out of my passion. Working hard is only part of the equation; you must leave room for God and Family.” During his four years at the ranch, Patrick finished his Associates Degree in Equine Science and met his future wife, Janelle. When another opportunity to focus on primarily reining horses presented itself, Patrick moved to Joliet, Montana to work for the Cottonwood Colt Company. He started colts and trained them through to their first show. Being away from Janelle, confirmed in both their minds marriage was the only option. Patrick and Janelle were married in June 2006 and upon returning from their honeymoon learned of an opportunity to move back to Arizona. In September, Patrick began working for Loma Vista Farm starting and training Dealin Dirty offspring. Two years later, he was still training out of Loma

Bluebonnet Feeds Renews Corporate Partnership with NRHA In 2015, the National Reining Horse Association gained a new corporate partner – Bluebonnet Feeds. Since that time, Bluebonnet has provided awards and educational opportunities at both the NRHA Derby and Futurity and has been an important partner to the association. Beginning July 2018, Bluebonnet Feeds has renewed its corporate partnership with NRHA through 2021. For over 30 years Bluebonnet Feeds has been handcrafting high-quality horse feed. They don’t believe in the bare minimum, especially when it comes to nutrition. That is why their nutritionally advanced feeds have locked formulas with highquality ingredients listed individually on the tag, never collectively as by-products. Bluebonnet uses chelated minerals and a full array of vitamins to build a strong, healthy horse from the inside out. At Bluebonnet Feeds the staff is committed to giving their best. In every department, there are horse owners who take feed production personally as the staff feeds Bluebonnet Feeds products to their own animals. They work hard to make sure each bag is the highest-quality product on the market. NRHA is thrilled to have this continued partnership with Bluebonnet Feeds. “Bluebonnet Feeds’ commitment to the nutritional health and well-being of our equine athletes supports the growth of our sport. NRHA is excited to continue a strong partnership with Bluebonnet Feeds,” said NRHA Director of Corporate Relations Sammi Miller. Bluebonnet Feeds shares in NRHA’s enthusiasm for the renewed corporate partnership. “We have been delighted with our relationship with NRHA and their members, and we are excited to continue to build that relationship into the future,” stated Bluebonnet Feeds President, John Langemeier.

2019 NRHA Convention & Awards Concludes in Oklahoma City
The fourth annual National Reining Horse Association Convention & Awards Banquet concluded February 9. After four days of education, constructive discussions, and networking, the event was deemed a success. The convention started with meetings of the NRHA Executive Committee and NRHA Board of Directors, which set a productive precedent for the remainder of the week. The NRHA Board of Directors conducted their first review of the proposed rule changes for 2020, received an update on the 2019 European Summit held earlier this year, and enjoyed a
66
presentation about the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA). NRHA Directors approved new deadlines for both Hall of Fame nominations, now May 31, and elections.
Other items of discussion included:
- Approval of a change in the Affiliate Regional Championship (ARC) open class which will base qualification on horse/owner combination and designation rather than horse/rider combination and designation. - Addition of Prime Time Rookie to the ARC and North American Affiliate Championship (NAAC) class list. - Alterations to the European Nomination Program conditions were endorsed, changing the monies allocated in the European Futurity and Derby to a 40/30/20/10 (L4/L3/L2/L1) ratio starting
with 2020 events. - Sanctioning of 2019 Election procedures and deadlines, with the following positions up for election: director-at-large on the executive committee and director for the South Central, North Central, Northeast, Northwest, and East Central regions. The first affiliate nomination deadline is July 1. - Authorization of updates to the Youth Incentive Award Program to allow correspondence with the current NRHA Youth age splits of 14-18, 13 & Under, and 10 & Under. The Annual General Membership (AGM) meeting on Friday morning allowed NRHA President Mike Hancock, Commissioner Gary Carpenter, and other members of NRHA’s staff to share their outlook for the future in light of 2018’s successes. After watching Hancock receive the president’s gavel from NRHA Past President Mike Deer, attendees received updates on the Reining Horse Foundation (RHF), NRHA financials, and the strategic plan.
“We had a great Board of Directors meeting! The Committee meetings were well attended and there were good discussions among all that were present,” Hancock said. “To end it all, we were able to celebrate a successful year with exhibitors, owners, and breeders.” Friday and Saturday also included many committee meetings which facilitated productive discussions and contribution of ideas to continue improving the sport of reining. Well-attended Eligibility and Aged Events Committee meetings, both held on Friday, included constructive dialogue regarding a recent eligibility survey, eligibility levels, and the 2019 NRHA Futurity dates. Proposed rule changes were discussed in each committee meeting separately. Each committee can send recommendations to the board of directors who will review and vote on these rule changes at their next meeting in April. On Saturday morning, NRHA Professionals attended the Professionals Summit where guest speaker Jamie Samples of Yellow Barn Media outlined some ways reining trainers and other equine professionals can
boost their marketing efforts. The professionals also discussed new ways to raise money for the RHF Crisis Fund and give back to the reining community. Saturday’s schedule also included the NRHA Judges Summit where committee members reviewed Futurity judge statistics, watched several runs from the 2018 Futurity, and boosted their education by judging one run together. Saturday night concluded with a star-studded celebration as the 2018 NRHA world champions and other award recipients were honored for their achievements during the 2018 season. NRHyA Leadership Summit The 2018 NRHA Youth Leadership Summit took place in conjunction with the NRHA Convention & Awards Banquet. Kelly Barnes served as the facilitator, where he challenged youth members to grow as leaders in the reining industry. Summit attendees, including all five 2019 NRHyA Officers and several other members, participated in three sessions of workshops where they gained skills to help them grow in not just reining, but outside of horses in all aspects of life.

NRHA Globalizes Youth Involvement NRHA Youth Council Expands to Europe
For Immediate Release – March 11, 2019 – Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) and the Reining Horse Foundation (RHF) recognize the importance of growth in the reining industry. That expansion is fueled largely by the next generation of reiners—our youth riders. To support young reiners around the globe, NRHA has expanded the youth program globally by launching an inaugural Youth Council in Europe. Since 2001, the National Reining Horse Youth Association (NRHyA) has facilitated the development of our sport’s future leaders. NRHyA members enjoy opportunities to benefit from college scholarships, youth awards and incentives, and guidance from top NRHA Professionals while making lifelong friendships and having fun along the way. Youth programs expand beyond arena-based competition; youths can enhance their futures through a variety of opportunities with NRHyA.
President: George Sternberg Allen (United Kingdom) Vice President: Nimroid Vannietvelt (Belgium) Treasurer: Lisa Werdaner (Italy) Secretary: Pia Boonstoppel (Netherlands) Historian: Nanina Staub (Switzerland) Additional Historian: Erin Wielsma (Netherlands)
As these budding leaders begin their new pursuit, digital communication has served as a launchpad for their progress. In April, the Council will host its first face-to-face meeting at the 2019 NRHA European Futurity in Cremona, Italy. At this event, NRHA will also facilitate a youth meeting, as well as a possible youth party and fundraising. For more information on NRHyA, visit nrhya.com.
Many of today’s top reining trainers and non pros have participated in youth competition or benefited from NRHyA leadership and scholarship opportunities, citing those offerings as major influences in their development as riders and students. NRHyA’s five core programs, which were designed specifically to develop and enhance the sport of reining, expanded worldwide in 2005. This explosion of growth continues with the 2019 European Youth Council. Incorporating an international Youth Council allows NRHyA to mold the program to represent the needs of young reiners on every continent. “I’m absolutely delighted that in two short years we’ve built an active European youth scene with top-10 awards and now the first ever European Youth Council,” said Francesca Sternberg, chair of the European Youth Committee. “I’m so excited to see what this vibrant, enthusiastic, multinational group brings to NRHA, and I’m sure the future of reining is in great hands. I’d also like to thank the RHF for their support and generosity with the top-10 awards, helping to recognize our youths worldwide.” The European Youth Council is made up of dedicated NRHA members who tirelessly work for the betterment of NRHyA opportunities in Europe and elsewhere. Current members of this group are Francesca Sternberg (Chair)(United Kingdom), Gisela Haas (Netherlands), Agnes Csolle (Hungary), Jane Muir (United Kingdom), Borys Pardus (Poland), and Manon Giraud (France). WRANGLER USES 100 PERCENT ®
LOCAL, SUSTAINABLE COTTON IN NEW
ROOTED COLLECTION
™
Made in USA denim collection supports state pride in five cottongrowing states, moves brand toward 100 percent sustainable cotton adoption by 2025
GREENSBORO, N.C. (April 9, 2019) – Wrangler®, a global icon in jeanswear and casual apparel, is taking another groundbreaking step in its sustainability efforts, working with local farmers to create a traceable, locally-sourced denim collection that honors land stewardship and champions state pride. The Wrangler Rooted Collection™ is a limited, premium line made from 100 percent sustainable, local cotton. Each piece was grown, milled, cut and sewn in the United States, helping to ensure America’s denim heritage for future generations. The Rooted Collection features five state-specific pairs of jeans: the Alabama Jean, the Georgia Jean, the North Carolina Jean, the Tennessee Jean, and the Texas Jean. The sustainable cotton used for each state’s jean is fully traceable to a family farm in that state. Each state’s design includes a unique wash, as well as trim and patch details featuring the state’s silhouette and other embellishments. The collection will also include two T-shirt designs for each state, as well as two national designs. “Connection to community and taking care of land are hallmarks of Western culture. The Wrangler Rooted Collection reflects our commitment to strengthening local communities and supporting U.S. farmers,” said Tom Waldron, President of Wrangler. “Equally important, the introduction of this collection aligns with our goal to continually improve the environmental performance and traceability of our products.”
86
The family farms supplying cotton to the Rooted Collection are the first five growers in the Wrangler Science and Conservation program, which advocates for land stewardship and best practices for soil health, such as crop rotation, cover crops and limited- or no-till. These science-backed methods build crop resilience to weather disruptions while improving yield, reducing water and energy inputs, fighting erosion, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Wrangler aims to source 100 percent of its cotton from farms using these practices by 2025. The Rooted Collection is all-American, from the farm to the fabric to the cut and sew operations. The family farms that provided the sustainably-sourced cotton for each state’s collection are: Newby Family Farms of Athens, Alabama (see video); McLendon Acres of Leary, Georgia; Lassiter Family Farms of Conway, North Carolina; Pugh Farms of Halls, Tennessee; and Vance and Mandie Smith of Big Spring, Texas (see video). Mount Vernon Mills in Trion, Georgia, made the denim fabric, and the jeans were cut and sewn by Excel Manufacturing in El Paso, TX. The Rooted Collection T-shirts were made exclusively with cotton grown by Vance and Mandie Smith, with spinning at Patrick Yarns in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, knitting by Contempora Fabrics in Lumberton, North Carolina, dyeing by Carolina Cotton Works in Gaffney, South Carolina, cut and sewn by Palmetto Apparel Service in Andrews, South Carolina, and printed by TS Designs in Burlington, North Carolina. The Wrangler Rooted Collection initially will be sold through Wrangler.com and participating retailers. Jeans will retail for approximately $100 per piece, with T-shirts priced from $30 per piece.

Ralph Lauren
50 Years of Equestrian Style
Ralph Lauren commemorated its 50th anniversary late last year with a stunning event set against New York’s famous landmark, Central Park’s Bethesda Terrace. The 50th Anniversary Collection articulated Lauren’s singular vision of American designs and exemplified those themes and inspirations throughout his career. “For my 50th anniversary, I wanted to create and share a runway experience that was deeply personal and a summation of the style I always believed in: personal, authentic, and forever in a place so quintessentially New York and so special to me—Central Park,” he said. In tandem, he published a visually captivating 50th anniversary book, showcasing iconic imagery from the world of Ralph Lauren. “Every one of the

places and things in this book has to do with my life—the old plaid shirts, the tweed jackets, the coats, the cars, the trucks, the white clapboard farmhouses—they are everything that I have aspired to, lived with, and loved,” wrote Lauren. “Every nuance that I ever connected to is here. So I give them back to you. That’s what I do.” Over the past 50 years, Lauren has celebrated the iconography of America and defined American style, translating his vision and inspiration into one of the world’s most widely recognized brands. The sartorial appeal of his equestrian-inspired apparel within the equestrian world has been longstanding. Lauren’s homage to the palettes and textures of the American West, and his nods to the tweeds and hunt coats of the English countryside, along with the classic breeches and jackets prevalent in the hunter ring, continue to resonate with those looking for timeless allure. Over the last five years, the Ralph Lauren brand has consistently been nominated to and won Equestrian Living’s annual Gold List favorite equestrian-inspired apparel and leather accessories categories. In 1971, the brand introduced the Polo player logo and followed a year later with the debut of the iconic polo shirt, a mainstay in any equestrian’s wardrobe and a signature choice for training. Ralph Lauren continued to integrate facets of the equestrian world into his collections. In 1978 the brand launched his Western wear for men and women, his first collection inspired by the American West. Three years later, he introduced the Santa Fe collection, and in 1985 the Equestrian Collection for women, inspired by the romance of traditional riding apparel, debuted.

REINING HORSE FOUNDATION Show-entry Campaign Expands with Major Shows Coming on Board
For Immediate Release – March 8, 2019 – Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – More affiliates and show managers for the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) are participating in a fundraising and awareness campaign to support the Reining Horse Foundation (RHF), a 501(c)3 nonprofit that serves as the charitable arm of NRHA. Based upon small donations that add up to make a big difference, the campaign encourages show entrants to make a $10 donation when they enter select shows.
The show-entry campaign was piloted by the Arizona Reining Horse Association (AzRHA) in 2017 and then by the Florida Reining Horse Association (FRHA) in 2018. These two affiliates have contributed nearly $10,000 to RHF since piloted. In 2019, FRHA launched the program at the Florida Reining Classic February 19-24 at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center. Adding the entry donation in 2019 is the National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC), April 14-21, in Katy, Texas. Also committing is the Tulsa Reining Classic and South Central Affiliate Regional Championship, August 26-September 1, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Tulsa Reining Classic is managed by Global Reining Sport Group. The Rocky Mountain Reining Horse Association (RMRHA) is offering the campaign at The Columbine Classic, May 15-19 in Pueblo, Colorado, and the RMRHA Summer Slide, July 28-August 4 in Denver, Colorado. Southwest Reining Horse Associa-
90
tion (SWRHA) is participating in the campaign during its SWRHA Futurity Show, October 22-27, in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Also taking part is the Western Slope Reining Horse Association at its three shows this year and the NRHA Derby, managed by Pro Management. Fundraising is expected to continue at the 2019 AzRHA shows, including the AzRHA Mother’s Day Slide, May 14-19; AzRHA Inside Slide, August 13-18; and AzRHA Best of the West/Southwest Affiliate Regional Championships; October 1-6. All shows will be held at WestWorld in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Oklahoma Reining Horse Association Ride & Slide I/II shows in Tulsa, Oklahoma, March 6-10, are offering a $5 donation option. Contributions will be matched by
the organization. The Southeastern Reining Horse Association plans to offer a donation option, as well. “We are thrilled to have these prominent shows represented through the show-entry campaign,” said Tim Anderson, RHF vice president “This represents significant new funding. Just as important is the opportunity to share information about the Reining Horse Foundation and its mission of caring for the reining community and honoring the sport’s legacy. It’s a feel-good story that reiners can be proud of.” Exhibitors will find the option to donate or opt-out on their showentry form, making it an easy way to demonstrate support for RHF. The most visible of the RHF core programs is the Dale Wilkinson Memorial Crisis Fund provid-
ing grants to reiners enduring hardships such as medical crises, accidents and natural disasters. Other core programs include youth scholarships and leadership development through the National Reining Horse Youth Association and perpetuation of the NRHA Hall of Fame. “The show-entry program is an exciting step forward for the Reining Horse Foundation,” said Leslie Baker, RHF executive director. “We know that reiners will help us innovate new ideas around this opportunity. For example, in Arizona, donors Tim and Kim Anderson provided a matching contribution that doubled the show-entry donations. The power of these $10 donations can do great things.” To notify the Reining Horse Foundation that you have an affiliate or show management group willing to participate in the show-entry campaign, contact Leslie Baker at rhf@nrha.com, (405) 946-7400, ext. 106.

Renews as NRHA Corporate Partner New Title Sponsor of Green Reiner Program
The National Reining Horse Association is excited to announce their 3-year contract renewal with Classic Equine as an official NRHA Corporate Partner. This year, Classic Equine put a new spin on their involvement by becoming the title sponsor of NRHA’s Green Reiner Program. As a long-standing NRHA Corporate Partner, Classic Equine is synonymous with quality equine sports equipment in the eyes of many horse owners. The company has earned this respect through years of dedication to creating durable products that support the safety and wellbeing of performance horses. This year, Classic Equine has gone beyond renewing their commitment as an NRHA Corporate Partner to promote the growth of the sport through a new avenue. As the title sponsor of NRHA’s Green Reiner Program, Classic Equine will contribute to the education of new members and encourage continued involvement for competitors in the entry-level program. “We are excited to partner with NRHA and be a part of the Green Reiner Program,” said Billie Bray, Director of Marketing for Classic Equine. “We look forward to meeting and supporting new members and beginners while being involved with the growth and expansion of this great sport.” “Classic Equine’s passion for growing the sport of reining continues through their support of the Green Reiner Program,” said Sammi Miller, Director of Corporate Relations at NRHA. “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Classic Equine, a leader in the equine industry and a champion for NRHA’s future!” The Green Reiner Program is an entry-level class that allows reiners to grow as they learn various aspects of the sport. This educational program gives exhibitors an opportunity to gain more knowledge by talking to judges at the conclusion of classes. Other helpful components of this program include permitting riders to use two hands if needed and the option to perform either simple or flying lead changes.

Gennaro Lendi and C
Outshine and Conquer the Open B The NRHA Germany Breeders 4-year-old Open and Non Pro Futurity finals matched the weather in Kreuth: Beautiful. A repeat of the 3-year-old Snaffle Bit Futurity, the 4-year-old Open Bit Futurity kept the [over 3,000] spectators glued to their seats until the very last horse-rider-combination: Gennaro Lendi and Colonels Dancing Gun. Aboard the stallion by NRHA Ten Million Dollar Sire Gunner out of Dance Little Spook, owned and bred by Quarter Dream Srl, the Italian professional, with a 228 score to beat, performed all the maneuvers outstandingly and, once he closed his run, a 231 appeared on the score board. “I truly felt the pressure when I walked in the arena but tried to leave that feeling in the warm up pen,” said Lendi who in April also conquered the 2018 NRHA European Futurity Open Championship with his mount. “This is a great horse with a lot of potential. I tried to concentrate completely and when we concluded with his last incredible stop, I knew we had marked what we needed to top the competition. I would

like to thank all my team and Pietro [Marseglia] for being such a phenomenal owner. In this moment, my thoughts go to the amazing horses who lost their lives on the road at the end of September. This victory is dedicated to them and to their owners.” Reserve honors went to German Dominik Reminder who posted the 228 to beat riding Call Me Mr Voodoo (Shiners Voodoo Dr x Arc Sassy Snapper), a stallion owned and bred by Elisabetta Zoccorato. “My horse was incredible tonight and I cannot hide the fact that although I am truly happy with this result and with the way he showed … I would have been happier had we won — it’s the name of the game!” said Reminder with a smile. NRHA Million Dollar Rider Rudi Kronsteiner conquered the highest spot of the podium in the L3 division with HA Handsome Harry between the reins. The stallion by NRHA Million Dollar Sire Spooks Gotta Whiz out of Chic Peas, owned by Bernice Engel and bred by Hillis Akin Family Partnership, and the Austrian rider in the saddle performed to a 226.5. “I got this horse in training at the beginning of the year and he’s been good from day one. Winning this title is great but what makes the outcome of 94
this show even sweeter is the fact that Carlo [Ambrosini] took home both the level 4 and 3 Non Pro championships,” said Kronsteiner, head trainer for Ambrosini Quarter Horses, Italy. “We came here with 12 futurity horses and made the finals with 10 … I’m really happy!” Taking the L3 reserve championship as well as the L2 championship with a 218.5 was German Oliver Stein who rode Shine Lil Whiz (Topsail Whiz x Lil Wanda), a stallion owned and bred by Silke Stein. “I’m really happy with the way this horse my wife and I bred went here tonight,” said Stein. “In the qualifier he stumbled but we managed to make the finals and this result is great; I trained and rode his mother, who was really an easy horse to show, and he has taken quite a few traits from her which is great!” Fellow country man Alexander Ripper closed his ride a half-a-point behind aboard Will Work For Guns (Gunner x Fabulous Footwork). He took home the reserve championship aboard the stallion owned by Dalila Okbani-Machs and bred by David Silva Jr. Dutch Petra Van Ede rode Cee U In Tinseltown (Hollywoodtinseltown x Miss Wimpy Hollywood) to the L1 Championship for owner and breeder Gisela Haas with an outstanding run worth 221. “I love this mare

Petra Van Ede & Cee U In Tinseltown so much and, considering the fact that a bobble in the qualifier kept us out of the other levels, winning the level 1 is just great,” said Van Ede. “This is the last show of the year for us so closing with this results is special.” The reserve championship, with a 213, went to Elias Ernst of Germany riding Painted Star Partners’ Valentine Nite (Gunners Special Nite x Mi Mega), a mare bred by John Covington. Carlo Ambrosini and Saturdaynight Tag (Saturdaynight Custom x Kachina Tag), last to enter the Ostbayernhalle arena in the Non Pro Futurity seeded finals, captured both the L4 and L3 NRHA Germany 4-year-old Futurity Championships with an amazing run worth a 221 score. The gelding, bred by Ambrosini Quarter Horses, and his rider also have the 2018 NRHA European Futurity L4 and L3 Championship under their belts. “My parents gave this horse we bred for my 17th birthday so bringing home this second important title this year is pretty amazing,” said Ambrosini. “I really wanted to go in and win because I knew we could do it — when I heard our score I was thrilled. A special thank you goes to all the Ambrosini team, my girlfriend Francesca, my best friend Andrea Pedrotti, to my parents and to my trainer, Rudi Kronsteiner. I could not have done this without them all.”
Ambrosini had a score to beat; the 217 posted by Stephanie Blessing-Kuenzli aboard her RB Lil Ruf Two (Lil Ruf Poco Peppy x GP Amelia Pocodo), a stallion bred by Thomas Kühnel. The Swiss rider settled for reserve honors in both the L4 and L3 and celebrated her win in both the L2 and L1 divisions. “This is a pretty cool and special horse that I’ve had since the beginning of the year,” she said. “I came here with the goal of trying to bring home a championship because I knew he could do it. I am thrilled with these titles.” Tying for reserve honors in the L2 with a 213.5 score were Germans Pia Borgwald and
Sharpshiner (Sharp Dressed Shiner x Walla Wanda Whiz), a gelding bred by Pia Kalle, and Andreas Dick riding A Shining Gun (Shine My Gun x Lady Buena Freckles), a stallion bred by Maile/Ludwig. The latter also took reserve honors in the L1 division. Claiming the NRHA Germany Bit Futurity Youth Championship with a 210.5 was 16-year-old Georgia Wilk of Germany aboard her ND Kit Kat Spark (Jacs Electric Spark x ND Miss Sailor Jac), a mare bred by Nathalie Derua. The young rider purchased the mare as a yearling and broke and trained her herself. A few months prior to the Futurity, Wilk and her mount rode under the guidance of Guy Zemah, head trainer for La Mesa Performance Horses LLC. Reserve honors went to Julia Boppelar, also of Germany, who reined Helga Boppeler’s Hollywood Shiningboy (Sharp Dressed Shiner x Dun Spun Around), a gelding bred by La Mesa Performance Horses LLC., to a 205.5. The very first edition of the NRHA Germany Breeders Derby was held in 1993. Leading the get of sire list of the German Open and Non Pro Futurity is NRHA’s only Twelve Million Dollar Sire Topsail Whiz, with offspring having won Euro 140.550 followed by Spat Olena (Euro 113.179) and, in third place is NRHA Ten Million Dollar Sire Wimpys Little Step with Euro 83.693. The NRHA Germany Breeders Futurity offers a 3-year-old Snaffle Bit Futurity and a 4-yearold Futurity. Over 300 horses made their way to compete in the prestigious Futurities as well as the full-slate of NRHA ancillary classes, German Equestrian Federation (FN) Senior, Junior and Young Riders, and NRHA Germany Championship classes. 95
AQHA Exploring Possibility of Relocation
AQHA Executive Vice President Craig Huffhines shares information regarding efforts from key industry stakeholders, external to AQHA staff, to raise funds to potentially relocate AQHA Headquarters. The debate over the location of AQHA Headquarters is as historic as the Association itself. While the headquarters was ultimately established in Amarillo, the initial meetings organized to form the Association were held in Fort Worth, Texas. Conversations regarding the possibility of moving the Association from Amarillo to Fort Worth have been held in barn aisles and boardrooms ever since. Today, these conversations have been rekindled. Efforts from key industry stakeholders, external to AQHA staff, to raise funds to support a move to Fort Worth have accelerated. Recently, AQHA staff members and I were invited to meet with these key stakeholders and a project planning group in Fort Worth so we could be briefed on their project. While there remains a great deal of business case evaluation and economic considerations for such a proposal, it is important that we keep you informed as details become available. You may hear of
96
stakeholders, external to AQHA staff, commencing business planning and fundraising activities that will be necessary to make such a proposal financially feasible. The idea of this proposed opportunity is interesting, but is secondary to AQHA's internal operating goals. Our primary goals as a staff, under the leadership of our Executive Committee, is to continue the hard work of rolling out new registry computing technology that will improve our service levels to the membership. We are currently testing new computing technology that will be rolled out in the coming weeks. This heightened level of work has temporarily stressed our daily work flow and turn-around time, which we know has delayed members' paperwork recently. This has been much like a road construction project on a metropolitan interstate highway that has momentarily slowed down traffic. The investment in this new technology is designed to open up the freeway, increase efficiency and turn-around time, while improving the AQHA customer experience. AQHA is a business in transformation, and we look forward to rolling out new member conveniences soon. We remain focused on improving our service levels to a modern expectation, and we are excited for you to see these improvements deployed in the coming months. In the meantime, we will keep you informed as more information and understanding of this most recent development regarding Fort Worth evolves. We appreciate your continued commitment to the Association and the horse, as we work together to reimagine the future of AQHA.

Corey Cushing Crowned World's Greatest Horseman Champion
After 10 thrilling days of nonstop reined cow horse action, the National Reined Cow Horse Association’s Celebration of Champions concluded on Saturday, February 23, from Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas. After four
grueling phases of the DT Horses and Hashtags World’s Greatest Horseman, it was Corey Cushing riding Sonita Lena Rey (Dual Rey x Sonita Lena Chick) who emerged victorious in front of a sell-out, standing-room-only crowd. Cushing won a plethora of first-rate awards and a check for $40,000 thanks to Finals scores of 212 out of the herd, 217 in the reined work, 223 in the steer stopping and 225 on the cow. Cushing and Sonita Lena Rey, who is owned by Sheri Jamieson and was bred by Jim Holmes, achieved the highest scores of the steer stopping and fence work portions of the Finals. The team fought their way up from the last qualifying hole into the Finals in order to snag the win. This marks Cushing’s second World’s Greatest Horseman title. Boyd Rice riding Royal Smart Fletch (Royal Fletch x Little Smart Ginger) took an early lead with a spectacular 222 in the cutting, which was held in Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum. Next came the reined work in the John Justin Arena where it was eventual reserve champions Rubys Radar (One Time Pepto x Ruby Bagonia) owned by C Ranches, Inc., and ridden by Zane Davis who took the round win with a 224. 2019 World's Greatest Horse Champion Interview Texas Lighting World’s Greatest Youth Horseman In addition to all the excitement of the DT Horses and Hashtags World’s Greatest Horseman, the Texas Lighting World’s Greatest Youth Horseman featured promising young riders competing on the big stage alongside their idols. A finals for the top six 102
Corey Cushing Guides Sonita Lena Rey to the DT Horses and Hashtags World’s Greatest Horseman Championship youth riders was held immediately following the World’s Greatest Horseman Steer Stopping to determined the champion. Trevor Hale rode Survive These Lips (CD Survivor x Lipschic) to a 723-point composite to earn the inaugural Texas Lighting World’s Greatest Youth Horseman title and $2,430. Hale had high praise for “Lippy,” a 2008 mare that has been his partner for the past four years. “I got her through Brad Lund and Brad and Todd Crawford have helped me a lot with her,” said Hale. “I’ve been preparing for a while, we started preparing ever since we learned we could enter it. I’ve had a lot of good help along the way. For this event I had to just work on all the parts—the
steer stopping, cutting, down the fence and the reined work. I just tried to get through all the events without any mistakes. We came in here in the cow work and I was a little behind and I knew I needed to come in and lay down the best run that I could, and luckily it all worked out.” 2019 World's Greatest Youth Horseman Championship Interview National High School Rodeo Challenge As part of the NRCHA’s commitment to the youth of the reined cow horse industry, the National High School Rodeo Challenge also took place today. The invitation-only competition featured contestants who placed among the top 20 at the 2018 National High School Finals
Rodeo Reined Cow Horse competition. Addison Coutts rode Peppys Please (Chic Please x Peppys Lena Limerick) to the win with an outstanding score of 290. Intercollegiate Rodeo Challenge Winning the Non Pro Division of the Intercollegiate Challenge was Josh Briggs with 16 points riding for North Central Texas College. In the Limited Division it was Brenna Braddock riding for West Texas to earn 16 points. The Novice Division champion was Monty Sperry who earned 15 points for North Central Texas College. North Central Texas College earned the Overall Team Championship with 46 points accrued by team members Joshua C. Briggs, Rieta May Dufurrena, and Monty Sperry.

Miller Land & Livestock is the 2018 Zoetis AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder of the Year

Miller Land & Livestock of Big Piney, Wyoming, is the 2018 Zoetis AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder of the Year. The award, which is presented by the American Quarter Horse Association and the AQHA Ranching Committee, recognizes the AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders who continue to uphold the ranching tradition. The ranch is managed by Mike Miller, along with his wife, Tara, and their sons, Will and Wes. Based in Big Piney, Wyoming, on the west central side of the state, the Millers run about 2,000 cow-calf pairs and 1,800 yearlings on land that some of which was first ranched in the late 1870s and has been in their family for 124 years. The Millers brand their cattle – Irish Black, Hereford and Angus crosses – with the historic “67” brand. Their operation is spread out and requires many miles of riding. Cattle are moved around, worked and doctored regularly all year long. “It is a horseback outfit,” said Mike. Their American Quarter Horse breeding program has existed since AQHA was founded in 1940. Most of the Millers’ horses have spent their lives as working ranch horses, but they include notable show, rodeo and other competitors. Mike is a very accomplished non-pro in National Reined Cow Horse Association competition, with earnings of more than $600,000 – most earned aboard homebred horses and all self-trained. Among the horses bred on the ranch is the late Playboys Buck Fever, a son of Freckles Playboy that the family 108
bred, competed on and owned. Playboys Buck Fever earned around $60,000 in competition and has sired the earners of more than $356,000 in reined cow horse competition, including two NRCHA superior reined cow horses. The ranch currently breeds 15-25 mares per year. “The Miller family has proved its dedication to ranching for generations,” said AQHA Director of Ranching Kim Lindsey. “They breed high-quality cattle and ranch horses, and are a model of an AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder.” This award is open only to Ranching Heritage Breeders who exemplify the ranching lifestyle. Ranching Heritage Breeders are working cattle ranches that produce five or more registered American Quarter Horses each year for ranch work. Nominees for the award are chosen by their peers, with the winner chosen by vote of the AQHA Ranching Committee. The 2018 AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder of the Year award will be formally presented to Miller Land & Livestock at the 2019 AQHA Convention in Fort Worth, Texas. The Millers will receive a custom-designed buckle from AQHA’s Awards Recognition Concepts to mark the achievement. For more information on the AQHA convention, visit www.aqha.com/convention. The ranch will be featured in the March American Quarter Horse Journal. To learn more about the AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders program, visit www.aqha.com/ranching.

In Honor of the Cowboy Boot Resurgence, a Brief History
The cowboy boot might not be the first thing one immediately thinks of when it comes to covetable, fashionable shoes, but it’s quickly reemerging as a major trend. Just a few weeks ago, labels ranging from Cinq à Sept and Calvin Klein to Coach and R13 sent their own versions of the humble boot down the catwalk during fashion month. Coach’s were glittery and ultra feminine, Calvin Klein’s had a minimalist steel toe and R13’s were styled with certain country accoutrements—John Deere baseball caps, for one—that made the look all the more ironic. Simply put, the new iterations of cowboy boots are anything but typical. The trend is one that’s been steadily building. While the aforementioned boots won’t be available until spring 2018, there is a slew of retail stores currently stocking fashion’s new favorite footwear. Céline is selling their own exaggeratedly curvy version of cowboy boots. Louis Vuitton, too, has released a luxe, short embellished boot that pays tribute to the silhouette of the shoe. Even Margiela has gotten in on the obsession, with the label’s own gilded option, crystal spur and all. As it turns out, this style of boot also has a controversial history, one that even historians feel uncomfortable pinning down. Some attribute the style to Texas origins, while others suggest Kansas. Some associate the cowboy boot aesthetic to a mishmash of different styles, while others give all credit to one man:
110
Charles Hyer, who created a custom pointed toe style for a Colorado cowboy who requested the style from his shop. According to Tyler Beard’s book The Art of the Boot, “As far back as we know, horsemen have preferred higher heeled boots.” Beard cites two styles of boots that were worn by true cowboys during the 18th century, which contributed to the modern versions we have today: the Wellington and the Hessian. The Wellington was a British boot, usually rendered in black or brown leather with side seams and a one-inch heel. The Hessian was also a boot of English origins, but introduced by Germans. The Hessian boot fell under the knee and has a distinct v-cut in the front. Billy the Kid was known to
wear this style. Around this time, the San Antonio based shoe company Lucchese was also founded. Since 1883, the brand has specialized in the modern day cowboy boot—with celebrities including Zsa Zsa Gabor and Bing Crosby wearing custom versions of the brand’s shoes. To this day, rare or custom Lucchese boots from the past can cost hundreds of dollars. According to Kara McClurg, fashion specialist at the online estate marketplace Everything But The House, rare cowboy boots are always in demand. “Craftsmanship, materials and design are the trifecta when it comes to boots,” she told the Observer. “Working with leather is a true art that takes years to master, and people respect that, especially in this day and age. A well-crafted cowboy boot will last years beyond anything you could buy at the mall. Throw in some exotic skins and some artistic flair, and you’ve got something truly special.” Add customization to the mix— which has always been a huge part of the cowboy boot’s history—and these kicks become all the more covetable. Tradition has it that cowboys, ranchers or anyone else who wore this style of boots would go to a cobbler to have them custom-fitted. “We recently sold a pair of custom ostrich skin boots for Tanya Tucker which was very cool,” said McClurg. “Each boot was decorated with her monogram over the state of Texas. You can’t get much more country and western than that.”
Robyn Graves, who is also a fashion specialist in the luxury estate sale market added, “Cowboy boots that bring in more value are the custom-made boots that have the more exotic skins, embroidery, elaborate designs or more themed designs, as well as vintage boots like ‘Old Gringo.” The actual style of the shoe has experienced a major change in aesthetics, more than a few times. The first occurred in the 1920s and 1930s, during the rise of Hollywood Western films. Actors such as John Wayne and Gregory Peck wore embellished editions for the big screen, spiking demand for a more decadent cowboy boot. In the 1960s, a more simplified boot came back into fashion, followed by a resurgence of everything opulent during the 1980s. Possibly one of the most interesting things about today’s modern cowboy boots? They’ve always been associated with high quality and durability, which is why in some ways, Céline and Louis Vuitton’s recent commitment to the style isn’t all that unexpected. Cowboy boots were built to last through everything and have beautiful craftsmanship—some of the same values shared by luxury French fashion houses. Fashion’s biggest houses have also shown their love for western wear in other ways, too. Gucci, Vetements and Jeremy Scott are just a few of the labels that showed western shirts on the runway over the course of the past few seasons. It’s interesting to note too, that some of the most iconic designers who have reinterpreted the style throughout history might just have a strong connection to the culture associated with them. Tom Ford, for instance, showed cowboy boots for his fall 2014 collection. It’s no surprise that the designer is native to Santa Fe. If you’re looking to get your own piece of history when it comes to cowboy boots, Céline, Margiela and Louis Vuitton will do, but if you want something that will stand the test of time in western wear, McClurg suggests investing in a pair by Lucchese, Tony Lama and Old Gringo. “[They] churn out some great classic Western boots, as well as heavily embellished styles with a more honky-tonk feel.”

7-Day Health Certificates Required for 2019 National Reining Breeders Classic During the Texas Winter Series at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center (GSEC) which ended February 24, two horses developed fevers of unknown origin. The facility followed its isolation protocol which requires horses with elevated temperatures to be immediately removed from the premises. They also reached out to Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine and local veterinarians for additional guidance. After the end of the Series they learned two other horses that showed at GSEC tested positive for strep equi. As a precaution, the upcoming GHHJA show March 9 and 10 was cancelled and the facility will complete a deep clean and sanitize the facility. Every stall and the surrounding areas will be scrubbed, rinsed, and disinfected within the guidelines provided by the consulting veterinarians. In the immediate future, GSEC will require health certificates for all horses (showing or nonshowing) written within seven days of arrival
112
at GSEC. The health certificate must state for the past 30 days the horse has not been treated or seen for reasons that might be associated with an elevated temperature or exhibited any symptoms associated with strep equi. National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) Secretary-Treasurer Cheryl Cody noted, “We appreciate the work Great Southwest Equestrian Center has done to insure the safety of all the horses. And even with our event not scheduled to begin for another month, we are glad to protect our horses by these enhanced measures. All horses must be accompanied by health papers (current Coggins, vaccination records, and health certificate) or they will not be allowed on the grounds. There will be no exceptions. Please have a printed copy of these records to give to the check in personnel. The National Reining Horse Association is not responsible for information contained in this press release. either second or third in eight of 10 races in 2011 and 2012. “It’s that ‘it’ factor that you can’t always define, but you know it when you see it,” said Meyer, who had his eye on the stallion as soon as he stepped off the track. “Big and powerful and pretty. Lots of balance and correct in structure. And he was one of those who could continually catch your eye, with charisma.” The stallion was undefeated in his halter career, winning the halter performance stallion world championship at the 2013 Adequan® Select World Championship Show. BRTSendingMyRegards earned AQHA points in heading and ranch riding with trainer Steve Orth of Guthrie, Oklahoma. He has also earned an AQHA Champion title. The stallion and his connections are featured in the December issue of The American Quarter Horse Journal, which AQHA members can read for free at www.aqha. com/qhj. OMEPRAZOLE Can Have Negative Side Effects In Humans; Should Horse Owners Be Worried?
By Denise Steffanus
If you watch television, no doubt you’ve seen commercials by law groups warning users about the dangers of proton pump inhibitors in humans. Proton pump inhibitors are prescribed for the prevention and treatment of acid-reflux disease and ulcers. They work by blocking the production of stomach acid and are marketed under the brand names Prilosec, Nexium, and Prevacid. Human studies link chronic use of proton pump inhibitors to kidney disease, fracture risk, and anemia.
Included in this classification of drugs is omeprazole, a common medication also used in horses to prevent and treat gastric ulcers. Some equine nutritionists and horsemen are concerned that omeprazole may hold the same dangers for horses. No equine studies investigating these concerns have been published, so nutritionists can only speculate how suppression of stomach acid by omeprazole might be affecting horses. Dr. Juliet Getty of Getty Equine Nutrition in Lewisville, Texas, believes horsemen’s concerns are reasonable because what happens in a horse’s stomach is not that different from human digestion. “What happens in humans is that these medications not only reduce protein digestion, but they also inhibit the absorption of key minerals and vitamins, such as magnesium, calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12,” Getty said. Protein is essential for muscle development and repair, which is crucial in performance horses. Getty explained that stomach acid activates pepsin, the enzyme that breaks apart proteins into smaller chains of amino acids. Protein digestion then can be completed by other enzymes within the small intestine, down to individual amino acids that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. She described how omeprazole affects protein digestion in humans. “If the long amino acid chain is not broken apart initially in the stomach by pepsin, which would be inhibited by omeprazole, then that protein would not be adequately digested,” she said. “It is possible that a protein deficiency could ultimately develop, but you would definitely see a compromised protein status.” Magnesium is important for muscle function, a healthy nervous system, sound bones, and healthy kidneys. Calcium’s primary role is to build strong bones and teeth. Constant bone turnover that occurs in racehorses creates a high demand for calcium. The mineral also helps muscles to contract and relax and nerves to send and receive signals. In the vascular system, calcium is essential for blood clotting and a steady heartbeat.
Digestibility Trial
Dr. Joe Pagan, president of Kentucky Equine Research, similarly was concerned how omeprazole’s suppression of digestive acid in the horse’s stomach affects digestion. In particular, he wanted to determine if omeprazole interfered with the digestibility of a calcium supplement KER devel116
oped to increase bone density. The supplement utilizes a marine-derived calcium called BMC, which is more digestible than the limestone powder (calcium carbonate) typically used as a calcium source in horse feeds. Pagan conducted a digestion trial with four idle Thoroughbreds that evaluated how well the horses were able to digest two sources of calcium (BMC and limestone) with and without two weeks of omeprazole administration at the recommended therapeutic dose (4 mg/kg per day). “The source of calcium and the omeprazole both significantly affected calcium digestibility,” Pagan said. He found the calcium in BMC was more digestible than limestone, but that omeprazole administration decreased the digestibility of both sources of calcium. Omeprazole administration decreased calcium digestibility by 20 percent in the limestone-supplemented diet, while the calcium in the BMC-supplemented diet was 15 percent less digestible. Interestingly, omeprazole had no effect on any other nutrient that the study measured, except calcium. It did not adversely affect the digestibility of magnesium, iron, protein, fat, or fiber. However, Pagan did find that serum gastrin was doubled in the horses on omeprazole. Gastrin is a hormone produced by the stomach to stimulate gastric-acid secretion. “In studies with other animals and humans, increased gastrin has also led to increases in parathyroid hormone [PTH] production, and there was a trend toward increased PTH in this study,” Pagan said. “PTH causes the body to pull calcium from the skeleton to maintain blood calcium, which is essential to support muscle and nervous function. Chronically elevated PTH may lead to osteoporosis, or holes in the bone that reduce bone strength and mass. Although this study did not directly assess bone metabolism, Pagan called this result a potential smoking gun. “Now, this study only included four horses, and the length of omeprazole administration was just two weeks,” he said. “At this point I don’t have any definitive proof that omeprazole affects bone, but I think it would be worth conducting additional studies to determine if longer-term administration of omeprazole would have an effect on PTH production that might have an effect on bone.” Pagan said the results of KER’s digestibility study indicate further research into the effects of omeprazole on calcium digestibility are needed. “This study should not be an alarm that everyone should stop using omeprazole,” he said. “It doesn’t mean that at all. It means that if you’re using omeprazole, you probably should pay closer attention to the horse’s calcium intake and make sure it is adequate, and preferably use available forms of calcium. “From our previous studies of furosemide—Lasix—we found that it increases urinary calcium excretion. So if you have a horse that is on omeprazole and Lasix, for sure you need to take a pretty close look and make sure you are giving them enough calcium in their diet.”

Congress clarifies that horses are not Pets advances landmark livestock health measures
Horse industry highlights include a revised statutory definition that excludes equines from a blanket definition of “pets” and funding for key livestock and international market development programs through Fiscal Year (FY) 2023. In the wake of extensive horse industry outreach, lawmakers struck language in the senate version that defined horses as “pets” within the context of a “Pet and Women Safety” (PAWS) measure. Industry requested that lawmakers delete “horses” from the proposed statutory definition of “pets,” but retain “horses” as a stand-alone category. In response to industry messages communicated to congressional leaders during the past six months, the final conference report states that the bill “clarifies the definition of pet to include certain companion animals, while also providing protections for other animals such as horses, service animals, and emotional support animals.” The revised definition helps preserve the longstanding classification of horses as “livestock,” while allowing equines to fall within the scope of property damage subject to compensation within the parameters of the PAWS Act. A preliminary review of the legislation shows that
120
lawmakers are moving in the right direction with respect to funding important animal health programs. Unlike earlier versions of the bill, the legislation mandates rather than authorizes minimum appropriations totaling $150 million to fund the National Animal Vaccine Bank (NAVVCB), the National Animal Disaster Preparedness and Response Program (NADPRP) and National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN), among other programs, for FY 2019 to 2023. Of the $150 million of mandated funding, the bill stipulates that Congress will appropriate $112 million “to be allocated among the NAHLN, the NADPRP and the NAVVCB.” With respect to the NAHLN, a major priority for the horse industry, the legislation further authorizes up to $30 million per year over the five-year span of the farm bill, matching industry’s authorization request. Additionally, the legislation provides “$255 million in annual mandatory funding” for Foreign Market Development, the Market Access Program, and other programs that support the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS).

by Emily Smith, MS, Platinum Performance® Sound hooves are the result of many things. Age, breed, metabolic rate, environmental moisture, illness, shoeing and exercise all influence horse hoof health, and the most important factor may simply be genetics. While the intricacies of the equine foot are clearly multifactorial, one thing is certain: the quality of the hoof always has a nutritional component. Inadequate nutrition can be the difference between having the potential for a hoof problem and actually developing one. Providing the dietary nourishment that the hoof needs can optimize health and provide the essentials needed to reach its potential. Because the hoof is in a continuous state of growth, dietary changes can positively or negatively affect its overall integrity. A balanced, forage-based diet is the foundation for all areas of equine health, and the hoof is no exception. Horses on well-balanced diets are much less likely to have foot problems. The balance of vitamins and minerals, the balance of net calories, the balance of activity level and the stage of life of the individual animal makes nutrition as much of an art as it is a science. The basic anatomy of the horse hoof is familiar to most people. At the very top of the hoof is the coronary band, which is the primary source of growth and nutrition for the hoof wall. The hoof wall is the hard, outer layer of the hoof capsule that runs from the coronary band down to the ground and gives the entire foot its rigidity and weight-bearing strength. The hoof wall itself is actually made up of three layers that include the outer periople, a middle layer and an inner layer. When viewed from the bottom, the hoof can be divided into three main sections: the heel, quarter and toe. The hoof wall can 122
also be viewed from the bottom of the hoof as the outer most layer that runs into the white line separating the hoof wall and the sole. The sole, which makes up the majority of the undersurface of the hoof, is softer than the wall due to more natural moisture and protects the sensitive structures within the hoof. The main role of the bars is to bear weight; they are the part of the wall that have turned inward from the heel to surround the frog. The v-shaped portion of the hoof that separates the heels is the frog, and it serves multiple functions. Because of its higher moisture content, the frog is more elastic and is a natural shock absorber. It aids in traction and heel expansion as well as circulation by pumping blood back to the heart. What may be less familiar is the unseen hoof. The living, breathing, sensitive tissues underneath these familiar parts are charged with much of the growth, circulation and nourishment of the entire hoof. Analogous to the quick of the human fingernail, the corium is the part of the hoof that produces new hoof growth, or the hoof horn and contains an intricate network of blood vessels and nerves. The laminar corium (sensitive laminae) is laminae engorged with blood vessels. It attaches to the innermost layer of the hoof wall, in a Velcro-like way on one side and firmly attaches to the pedal bone on the other side. The solar corium (sensitive sole) contains hair-like laminae also teeming with blood vessels. It attaches to the sole and the frog and supplies nutrients for growth. The digital cushion resides on top of the frog and behind the pedal bone, viewed on the outside of the hoof as the bulbs of the heel. It is a tough yet elastic structure that reduces concussion to the foot and supports heel expansion as well as assisting in circulation. Lateral cartilages, the pedal bone and the navicular bone also make up the inner structure of the amazingly tough yet also delicate hoof. The dread that accompanies words such as “foot abscess,” “quarter crack” and the insidious “laminitis” reinforces the incredible importance of the health of the hoof, as well as the fact that a compromise of it debilitates the entire horse. The health of the hoof is essentially
an extension of the health of the horse, and nutrition provides a critical component in its well-being. Mark Silverman, DVM, MS of Sporthorse Veterinary Services, notes the harmonious marriage of nutrition and hoof health. “Good nutrition and a properly-functioning gastrointestinal system are critical to good hoof health. Having access to good quality nutrition is as important as regular hoof care,” says Dr. Silverman. There is a difference between providing adequate nutrition and good or therapeutic nutrition. Energy intake, protein and amino acids, fats and fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, along with clean water, are the specific nutritional areas that provide the integral foundation for hoof health, as well as the means for optimizing hoof health.
Hoof Spotlight
Common Problems & Nutritional Support Hoof problems range from superficial to debilitating. Consulting your veterinarian and farrier is the best approach for hoof care and critical if the horse is experiencing duress. There are different methods to offer support for hoof issues that include corrective shoeing, topical treatments, wrapping, etc. Providing specific nutrients through the diet can be used as a preventative measure and therapeutically to decrease inflammation, support normal circulation and ensure the hoof tissue has the necessary building blocks to heal and rebuild.
Navicular Syndrome Navicular syndrome, often called navicular “disease,” is a group of related abnormalities affecting the navicular bone and associated structures in the foot. Usually seen in both front feet, it most commonly describes an inflammation and progressive degeneration of the navicular bone and its surrounding tissues. It can lead to significant and even disabling lameness. It is more prevalent in competition horses with a tendency to affect Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds and Warmblood breeds between the ages of 7 and 14. Conformation may also be a predetermining factor. The exact cause is not known, but damage to the navicular bone may occur due to a lack of blood supply or trauma to the bone. Damage may also occur to the deep flexor tendon, navicular bursa or navicular ligaments, which may all result in inflammation, pain and lameness. If navicular disease is suspected, contact a veterinarian who will likely perform flexion tests and nerve blocks and may use x-ray or MRI for diagnosis. The veterinarian and farrier may also use corrective shoeing to improve blood flow and lift and support the heel for comfort. Laminitis Laminitis is the most serious disease of the equine foot and causes pathological changes in anatomy that may lead to long-lasting, crippling changes in function. Laminitis is inflammation of the sensitive structures in the hoof called the lamellae, which holds the coffin bone tight within the hoof horn. This inflammatory condition is extremely painful and can lead to rotation of the coffin bone known as founder. There are multiple causes of laminitis. Nutritionally, it can be related to a high intake of sugar and starch, primarily from a high intake of grain mixes with cereal grains and molasses. Additionally, overconsumption of rich, lush pasture grass, particularly when a horse is unaccustomed to it can cause laminitic changes. Diets should provide enough energy to promote growth of the hoof wall and maintenance of an ideal body condition score between 4 to 6 out of 9. Excessive weight should be avoided to help prevent complications from obesity and insulin resistance, which can be associated with laminitis. Equine rations that provide a high concentration of non-structural carbohydrates from sugar, starch or fructans should be avoided because these dietary carbohydrates can also lead to complications from laminitis. If laminitis is suspected, contact your veterinarian and farrier for a diagnosis and treatment plan. Platinum Protocol: Platinum Performance® CJ, Platinum Hoof Support, Hemo-Flo®, Platinum Longevity®
White Line Disease White line disease, also called seedy toe, is a widespread problem affecting the equine foot. Multiple causes have been proposed including excessive moisture, which softens the foot, as well as excessively dry hooves, which may form cracks or separations. Both of these scenarios allow an avenue for pathogens to invade. Another logical cause of the disease is mechanical stress due to an excessively long toe, poor general hoof conformation and several hoof capsule distortions. It is most commonly found by the farrier during routine hoof care and is characterized by a progressive separation of the inner zone of the hoof wall, beginning at the sole. The white line is the junction of the hoof wall and the sole. The separation occurs in the non-pigmented horn at the junction between the two main layers of the hoof horn. The disease process occurs secondary to a hoof-wall separation. Opportunistic and infectious bacteria and fungi may invade the separation and cause or compound disease. Field studies suggest that a higher dietary level of iodine, an anti-fungal, may offer support to resolve white line disease over a period of weeks. Platinum Protocol: Platinum Performance® Equine, Platinum Hoof Support Continued next page 123
White Line
Abcess
Hoof Abscess Caused by bacteria getting trapped inside the hoof, abscesses are a very common cause of acute lameness in horses. Trauma to the hoof sole caused by a puncture (nails, glass, etc.) may lead to bacteria and debris having access to the inner hoof and resulting in an abscess. Excess moisture may cause the hoof wall to soften and allow bacteria access through gaps in the white line. Conversely, extremely dry hooves may lead to brittleness and cracking of the hoof wall also lending access to bacteria. The hoof itself does not allow room for swelling, so as excess pressure builds up from foreign bacteria, it causes an extreme amount of pain resulting in severe lameness, often times seeming to occur overnight. In most circumstances, a veterinarian will be able to drain the abscess, with pain relief being nearly immediate and allowing rehabilitation to begin. Platinum Protocol: Platinum Performance® Equine, Platinum Hoof Support There is a wide spectrum of hoof cracks and the severity of the crack depends on location, depth and site of origin. Grass cracks and sand cracks tend to be superficial flaws caused by the environment. Heel cracks, bar cracks and toe cracks are capable of causing extreme pain. Quarter cracks, in particular, are painful, difficult to manage and have a variety of causes. Quarter cracks involve the coronary band and grow downward. They are more likely than other types of cracks to bleed and become infected, leading to extreme pain and lameness. For all cracks, the farrier should be involved in assessment and will determine the best plan for repair and stabilization. Platinum Protocol: Platinum Performance® Equine, Platinum Hoof Support
Think Positive: Energy Balance Total energy or caloric intake directly correlates to growth rate of hooves. Ensuring that a horse is in a positive energy balance means that his total intake exceeds his output; the horse is maintaining or gaining weight. The diet should provide enough energy to promote growth of the hoof wall while maintaining an ideal body condition score between 4 to 6 out of 9. Overall energy balance is higher than maintenance requirements in several classes of horses, including those that are growing, lactating, breeding, working or exercising. If a horse has very poor quality hooves, consider total energy intake first. A horse in a negative energy balance will utilize 124
Hoof Cracks
protein to compensate for energy needs for maintenance or growth, etc. This may create a secondary protein or amino acid deficiency that will directly impact hoof quality. Research has shown that hoof wall growth was 50 percent greater in growing ponies that were in positive energy balance when compared with ponies on restricted diets with a reduced body growth rate. It is a common observation that when horses gain weight on lush, spring grass, they also grow hoof faster, highlighting that the perfect food for horses truly is fresh, green grass. The recommendations for total digestible energy for a 1,100-pound horse at maintenance is between 15.3 and 18.2 megacalories (Mcals), dependent on the individual horse’s metabolism. A rough estimate of forage by weight needed per day is about 2 percent of the total body weight or 22 pounds for a 1,100-pound horse; 22 lbs of “good” grass hay contains approximately 17.6 Mcals. This is an oversimplified example but a good demonstration that energy requirements for horses at maintenance can easily be met with forage alone. The Importance of Protein Protein is the core of a solid hoof. From the Greek word proteos, meaning “of primary importance,” protein makes up over 90 percent of the hoof wall on a dry matter basis. Protein deficient diets lead to general poor hoof quality as shown by reduced hoof growth and splitting or cracking of the hoof. Hoof tissue contains many amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein, and these amino acids are what actually affect the metabolism of the hoof and must be available in appropriate amounts in the diet. Digestible and high-quality protein supplies the horse with the amino acids essential for hoof growth. The availability and balance of the amino acids are more important than the general crude protein intake. For example, the amino acids, lysine and methionine, may be deficient even if the total crude protein in the diet is adequate. Both lysine and methionine are essential for hoof growth as they are necessary for producing all body proteins, including keratin. Keratin is an extremely strong specialized type of skin cell and is the major structural protein for the hooves, as well as skin, teeth, mane and tail. Keratin is responsible for the outer protective layer of the hoof wall as well as structural support. Keratin, keratinassociated proteins and the intercellular cementing substance are all made from amino acids, which are used to synthesize these structural proteins in the hoof wall. The sulfur-containing amino acids, cystine, cysteine and methionine, play a key role in the development of the “cellular envelope,” also known as the marginal band, which protects horn cells against protein-degrading enzymes. Cystine and cysteine can actually both be manufactured internally from methionine. The pathway that converts methionine to cysteine is thought to be imperative in the production of a quality hoof. Methionine
is a diet-dependent amino acid since it cannot be manufactured from other amino acids as is the case for several others. Methionine is necessary for integrity of the white line and along with lysine, is essential for hoof growth; both are necessary for producing all body proteins. As a primary constituent of keratin, methionine stimulates strong, healthy hoof growth and is essential to prevent cracked, brittle hooves.
production of collagen, which is incorporated into all connective tissues. Fresh grass provides adequate levels of all of these vitamins. However, the overall content drops when fresh grass is cut for hay. Unlike Vitamin C, which can be synthesized in the intestines of the horse to prevent maintenance deficiencies, beta carotene and vitamin E may require supplementation for horses without access to fresh grass to support hoof health.
Fats for Feet
The B vitamins play essential roles in every organ, tissue and cell, and all of them are needed for normal protein production and cellular metabolism. Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, is synthesized from cobalt in the diet and is involved in blood cell formation to nourish hoof tissue. Biotin, a sulfur-containing B vitamin, is an important cofactor for several major enzymes and has a positive effect on the synthesis of intercellular glue used for cell-to-cell adhesion to strengthen the outer hoof wall layer. Supplementation with biotin leads to improved hoof wall strength and an increase in the rate of hoof growth. Biotin supplementation is particularly recommended for horses fed a high grain diet and not on pasture. The B vitamins are produced by the gut microbes, which protect the horse from a full-blown deficiency state. However, supplementation may be needed to
Fats play a pivotal role in a healthy hoof as they retain the natural moisture and pliability of the hoof wall, resist the absorption of water from the environment and prevent bacteria and fungi from entering the hoof horn. Hoof tissue has 3 to 6 percent total fat, which works to bind cells together and aids in repelling water. Fatty acids are important nutrients for healthy hooves as they help in connecting hoof horn cells and sustain a permeability barrier. In grass, the ratio of omega-3 fatty acids to omega-6 fatty acids is between 4:1 to 6:1, which is ideal for the horse. However, the fragile anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acid content drops quickly and dramatically when grass is cut and cured to make hay. Omega-3 fatty acids will undoubtedly need to be supplemented back into the diet if the horse is on a hay-only diet. If grains are provided in the diet, omega-3 fatty acids will need to be added to balance the pro-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acid content from the grains, especially if the horse does not have access to pasture. Deficiency of fat can be seen in skin and hoof problems, which is a reason many horses with dry, splitting feet that do not respond well to other vitamin/mineral-specific supplements improve when supplemented with a formula that provides a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. equine horse hooves
Take Your Vitamins Several antioxidants are influential to equine hoof health, including beta carotene (precursor for vitamin A), vitamin C and vitamin E as they offer protection from oxidation at the membrane level. Vitamin A specifically is also necessary for keratin production. Vitamin C is influential in the
Mighty Minerals Minerals are needed for virtually every process in the entire body of the horse, and growing and protecting hoof tissue is no exception. Providing the requirements needed for maintenance at whatever stage of life, the horse is in is extremely important. However, it is also important that minerals are in the correct proportion to each other since they interact with each other and can interfere with the absorption of another if levels are too high or too low. Dr. Silverman notes, “While biotin is probably the most common supplement people consider when trying to support good quality hooves, there are other nutrients, including lysine, methionine, copper and zinc, amongst others, that appear to be important to maintain good quality hooves. Continued next page 125
Continued from previous page “Happy Manganese is an antioxidant trace mineral that protects the hoof cell membrane from oxidation. The macromineral calcium is integral for hoof growth and strength. Calcium is known to be essential as it is involved in the creation of sulfur cross-links between the hoof proteins and in the cohesion of cells to each other and initiates cell envelope formation. If calcium levels are low in the overall
Feet”
diet, supplying extra calcium to meet requirements may positively impact hoof quality as well as bone quality. Many horses show a noticeable improvement in hoof horn quality when diets are balanced for calcium. Hoof quality suffers dramatically with inadequate levels of the trace minerals zinc or copper. Zinc and copper are two of the most com-
mon trace mineral dietary deficiencies around the world. A lack of either of these minerals can result in slow hoof growth and thin, weak walls. High iron intake, extremely common in horses, can compound the problem as it interferes with absorption of both these minerals. Significant improvement is typical for horses that receive adequate supplementation of zinc and copper. Zinc and copper are much needed for the hoof itself but also necessary for forming healthy
tissue that attaches the outer hoof wall to the living tissue underneath. As antioxidants, zinc and copper also prevent fats and oils from oxidizing. Oxidative damage to the fats in the hoof structure break the protective seal on the hoof. This causes drying and weakening of the cementing “glue” between the cells. Zinc is present in high concentrations in normal hoof tissue and is critical for a variety of functions, including the normal cell division involved in the growth and repair of the hoof wall. It is vital for the assembly of collagen and intercellular cementing substance. Zinc is also essential for a variety of enzymes that every metabolicallyactive cell needs. Zinc-dependent enzymes are involved in keratinization, which hardens and strengthens the hoof. Therefore, a deficiency in zinc will result in incomplete keratinization, which will result in a defect of the hoof horn. Copper is versatile, and so it is incorporated into many areas of the horse’s body from skin and coat pigmentation, to brain development and function, to the synthesis and maintenance of connective tissues and in immune support. In the hoof, copper enables important enzymatic functions required for metabolism in rapidly dividing cells, such as hoof cells. Copper is involved in disulfide bond formation in keratin and cell envelope proteins, which connect hoof cells and influences overall rigidity of the hoof. When there is a copper deficiency, the bridges that hold keratin strands together are often compromised. This is the reason why low dietary levels of copper are often associated with weak or damaged hooves.

A Literary Legend of the Western Frontier L. Ron Hubbard spent his formative years in a rugged Montana, among the cowpunchers, lawmen, and desperados who would later people his Wild West adventures with remarkable authenticity. Living on the frontier, he was not only breaking broncs at a tender age but also among the few whites ever admitted into Blackfoot society as a bona fide blood brother. During a long and illustrious literary career, Ron threw a wide loop over the land of his beginnings and wrote 38 tales of honor, integrity, and courage of the American West.

Ann Salmon-Anderman National Reining Horse Association Awards 2018 Volunteer of the Year
Each year, the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) acknowledges one outstanding volunteer for commitment to giving back to the sport of reining. At the NRHA Awards Banquet on February 9, the 2018 honoree learned she would be acknowledged moments before accepting her award, but her dedication to NRHA has stood a far longer test of time. Ask any one of the many reiners whose lives she has impacted—Ann SalmonAnderman couldn’t be more deserving of this honor. At just under 30 years with an NRHA membership to her name, Anderman has served the sport she loves in almost every role she could find, from NRHA board and committee member to judge and steward to competitor, and, of course, volunteer. Through extensive involvement with her local affiliate, the Southwest Reining Horse Association (SWRHA), Anderman extends her passion for the sport to others, beginners and pros alike. After serving as president of SWRHA for three years, she continues to play an instrumental role in managing the SWRHA Futurity and Show as well as
130
the SWRHA Reining Boot Camp. Her goal of giving every exhibitor a place to compete led her to introduce entry level classes to SWRHA shows. Today, her desire to improve both her affiliate and the sport of reining as a whole has driven her to pursue innovative ways to increase communication between judges and exhibitors. As an NRHA Professional, Anderman and her husband train and host clinics at their facility in Pilot Point, Texas. And her service to the sport of reining certainly won’t stop now. After 20 years of dedicating herself to volunteer work in the industry, Anderman is ready to continue giving back to the horses she loves and the people who love them. Founded in 1966, the National Reining Horse Association is a nonprofit association dedicated to promoting and encouraging the development of and public interest in the sport of reining. The focus is on developing and maintaining suitable standards of performance and judging and in providing a fun filled, family-oriented atmosphere.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA REINED COW HORSE ASSOCIATION 141
THIS IS HORSE COUNTRY AT ITS BEST Wild Horse Country Located in southern Colorado, in the
Sangre de Christo mountain range. You will experience beautiful scenic views as you climb from the floor of the San Luis Valley to the top of the mesa. As you leave the small community of San Luis you will enter into a section of the west that is still “open range (no fences) where it is common to find bands of wild horses, sometimes grazing along the highway that leads to Taos, New Mexico. Through out the area horses are found where ever they choose to wander. Additional wildlife; deer, elk, and bear abound. With the privacy afforded by few neighbors and large parcels, this is truly a great place to live free, in the western way.
