Handicapped Reinings Are they in the Future?

Handicaps are based on the rider’s ability, and the quality of horses they have, and those numbers rise and fall annually, or more often. The best way to increase the interest, participation and money for showing reining horses is to create a handicapping system, just like that used in team roping. Years ago, the big-players in roping changed the game when they transformed into a handicapped format for team roping. The resulting huge growth generated capital, and earnings, which attracted corporate interest. The original players then cashed out when the USTRC and the World Championships of Team Roping sold to AIM, the new publishers of the NRHA Reiner. AIM brought in world-class management and team roping surged ahead.

See, back in the day, a roping would be getting ready to start and suddenly World-Champions, like Jake Barnes, would roll-in and simply win it all. Over-time, this undermined the game because the toughs scared off too many amateur ropers. It became a real problem and event promoters didn’t like it because ropers started to hold back entering waiting to see who showed up, and if the toughs rolled in, often late, they simply left. The vast majority of ropers who really ended up paying the bills didn’t like it, and the business of roping had stalled. Then, suddenly, roping changed to handicapping and the sport exploded as everyone signed up, paid their dues, got their handicap, and a monthly subscription to the Super Looper. The Super Looper, as the association magazine surged in advertising, page size and distribution becoming a must-read for ropers. The result was a real boom, unbelievable growth on what the ropers knew was a level playing field. Handicapping in roping has been a break-out moment for women. Before handicaping, a wife rode in the truck now she rides as a header, or healer. An older couple from Arizona won $250,000 last year at a roping in Laughlin. Women are surging in the roping arena, just ask anyone who knows what is really going on and they’ll tell you that woman are hot in the roping pen. 4

When “Average Joes” stated winning and breaking the jackpot bank from the higher number of entries, roping exploded. Once everyone knew they had a fair chance the game was on and roping blew up and soared by all other western disciplines to attract real corporate investment. The obvious question is why would, primarily, a consumer magazine company buy the USTRC. The answer could be that millions of people are retiring and the number of those who are pre-disposed to have an interest in roping, and horse sports, is off the chart. It is a subscription based business, and it is a legal form of gambling with jackpots. The growth will be phenomoninal for years to come. The future of reining points toward a similar outcome. It’s jackpot driven, it some ways easier to teach and perform than roping, and it does not require cattle, Growth potential is huge and it has yet to be handicapped. That is an attractive market.

Imagine that nothing changes in an existing show, yet like a Calcutta, a handicapping value is overlaid on an existing class, or two classes to create an 8 Reining. One of the two classes is entered by the 2 Reiner and the other is a 6 Reiner showing in the same, or a different level class. The score of each rider in their class, or classes is added to create their handicap score. For example, 2 Reiner earned a 190, and the 6 Reiner scored 210, so together they have a 400 score in the number 8 Reining. Low rated reinings, or very high rated reinings simply target that exhibitor group. Imagine handicapped classes overlayed on futurity classes where two riders benefited from each other’s outcomes. This builds a better community by creating more mutually beneficial relationships and outcomes. There are so many combinations to play it is almost endless with the promotional opportunities. Both in roping and polo, states or regions have handicappers that define your number. Handicaps are based on the rider’s ability, and the quality of horses they have, and those numbers rise and fall annually, or more often. They aren’t based on winnings, but abilities, and horse power. Surprisingly, most folks want a number below their abilities because that gives them a little edge.

Snip O Gun

Snip O Gun, by One Gun and out of Miss Kim O Lena, was purchased by her current owner, Tammye Hutton of Hilldale Farm in Brashear, Texas, as a 4-year-old from Hill and Dollie Clements. While she has never shown in the arena, this exceptional mare has proven herself as a star dam from her first foal, producing some of today’s most recognizable reining horses. This 1993 mare’s 17 money-earning offspring have placed her fourth on the NRHA Leading Dams list, with a total of more than $930,000 in NRHA Lifetime Earnings (LTE). Snip O Gun’s first offspring, by NRHA Three Million Dollar Sire Nu Chex To Cash, was Flash Me A Chex who was a 2013 NRHA Limited Non Pro Futurity finalist. She’s produced 13 additional foals by Nu Chex To Cash, nine of which were NRHA money earners. Some of the pair’s most successful offspring include: Big Chex To Cash ($194,260 LTE) who holds the titles of 2005 NRHA Open Futurity Reserve Champion and 2007 NRHA Open Derby Reserve Champion. He’s also a prolific sire of reining horses with offspring approaching the milliondollar mark in NRHA competition. Hot Smokin Chex ($186,598 LTE) who won the 2004 All American Quarter Horse Congress Open Futurity and placed in the top 5 at the 2004 NRHA Open Futurity, 2005 National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) Open, and 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games. Chexmaster ($103,911 LTE) who was the 2014 NRHA Second Go Open Futurity finalist, 2015 Reining By The Bay 6

Pro Futurity finalist and a 2008 NRHA Open Derby finalist. Snip O Gun has also been matched with several other wellknown NRHA stallions, delivering high achievers. Her most successful son in the arena is Inferno Sixty Six ($205,690 LTE) by Gunnatrashya, an NRHA Two Million Dollar Sire. She also produced Snip O One ($32,261 LTE) by A Sparkling Vintage, an NRHA Million Dollar Sire. She had three offspring who were NRBC open finalists in 2019 and continues to produce quality offspring that leave their marks in NRHA history.

Roberto Cuoghi

Roberto Cuoghi has been involved in the reining world for more than 30 years. Today, he’s one of NRHA’s most successful European owners, breeders, and nominators with offspring both on the top and bottom side of well-known, performing reiners. Cuoghi was the first owner to enter an Italian-bred horse, Master Snapper, in the NRHA Derby. Master Snapper went on to win all three divisions of the 2006 NRHA Open Derby with Kelly Zweifel. Cuoghi paved the road for many European breeders who’ve followed in his footsteps.

Hall of Fame Inductees Cuoghi established Europe’s successful Italian Reining Horse Breeders Association (IRHBA). He has an ongoing partnership with Eleuterio Arcese to purchase reining horses from the United States to use in the program. The IRHBA has played a vital role in the Italian Reining Horse Association (IRHA) through consistent sponsorships. Beyond his success in the European breeding industry, Cuoghi has influenced other realms of the sport. He has served as an NRHA and IRHA board member, held the title of IRHA President since 2007, and been President of the NRHA European Council since its inception. Additionally, Cuoghi supports and sponsors youth reining programs. His involvement spans the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) European Championships for Seniors, Juniors and Young Riders, the NRHA World Reining Championship, and his latest contribution hosting the inaugural NRHA/RHF/ IRHA Global Youth Reining Cup in Cremona, Italy.

Not only has he supplied reining horses to almost all of Europe, but Risso is a big promoter of reining throughout Western Europe. He’s mentored many well-known European reining trainers’ careers including Maurizio Tonini, Mike Davis, Jim Kiser, Stefano Massignan, Martin Gamper, Nicoli Bruneli, Peirlugi Chioldo, Matteo Cunillo, and Matteo Nadalina. Risso is also an IRHA Past President and Board Member.

Risso has earned many accolades in the arena. Some of his top triumphs include 2002 NRHA European Championship Show Non Pro Champion, 2008 IRHA Non Pro Closed Futurity Reserve Champion, 2009 and 2011 IRHA Non Pro Futurity Champion, 2010 NRHA Breeder’s Non Pro Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion, and 2009, 2013, and 2014 NRHA European Non Pro Futurity Champion. In the race for NRHA World Championships, Risso is the 2010 Non Pro World Reserve Champion, 2011 Non Pro World Champion, and 2012 Non Pro World Reserve Champion.

Cuoghi continues to be fundamental in serving as an intermediary between European members and NRHA leadership on important matters regarding the reining industry.

He has also been instrumental in the promotion of the FEI Reining Championships in Manerbio and worked very closely with Ceasare’ Croce, the Italian Equestrian Federation, and the FEI to promote youth events around the world.

Claudio Risso

Hall of Fame Inductions The inductees and soon-tobe-announced NRHA Lifetime Achievement Award recipient will be honored at Sliders’ Night Out presented by Toyon Ranch on December 4 at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City during the NRHA Futurity. RHF is creating a special night recognizing new and previous NRHA Hall of Fame inductees. For details on how to become a Hall of Fame table host or major event donor, contact RHF Executive Director Leslie Baker at lbaker@nrha.com or (405) 946-7400.

Claudio Risso’s name is synonymous with reining all over the world. His NRHA membership dates back to the early 90s and spans many categories—owner, exhibitor, breeder, nominator, and mentor.

Risso is 14th on NRHA’s Leading Owner list by breeding money-earning offspring that have accumulated more than $912,000 in LTE. Most recently, his horse Spat Olena made history as the first European horse to make NRHA’s Million Dollar Sire list.

It took a qualifier and a final to bring home top honors in the NRHA Open with the highest added offered in Europe.

The duo – fresh off their NRHA European L4 Open Derby Championship – nailed each and every maneuver and set the stands — which counted over 5,000 spectators — on fire. They closed with a 228 score, adding the prestigious win to their accolades. Diego and Laura purchased the talented mare as a 4-year-old and passed the reins on to Ann Fonck with the idea of showing her, two months later, at the European Futurity. "That’s when I first showed her and immediately liked her," said Fonck about the mare that boasts close to $40,000 NRHA Lifetime Earnings. 14

Dany Tremblay and Lil Gun Affair Win the Futurity at Tulsa

The Tamarack Ranch Developing Horse Futurity at the Tulsa Reining Classic was created with the goal of allowing reining horses to progress and perform at their own pace. As entries increase each year, it’s evident that the reining industry has embraced the concept.

With a score of 221, Dany Tremblay and Lil Gun Affair claimed the Open Level 4 and Open Level 3 championship of the Tamarack Ranch Developing Horse Futurity. The talented mare, by Lil Joe Cash out of Gun Affair, added $6,644 to her lifetime earnings. “She was super easy to get ready today. It’s something I really like about this mare. She’s not complicated and is a team player. She’s not scared of the crowd or 18

judges,” Tremblay said. “She’s exactly the same in the show pen as at home, which is what every trainer wants.” Tremblay noted that Lil Gun Affair’s best maneuver is her stops. “After we were done with the turnarounds and circles, I just sent her,” he recalled. Lil Gun Affair is owned by Martin Brisebois. “Her owner is from Canada and is a great friend of ours and a good customer. I wish he could have been here, I am so happy for him,” Tremblay said. “We bought this horse as a yearling. She’s part of our program and we’ve done everything with her. From day one she wanted to be nice, and now she’s here winning something.” Tremblay brought twelve horses to Tulsa. “It’s a busy

Not only did Matteo Rondanina and Spooks Smokin win reserve in the Open Level 3, the duo also topped both the Open Levels 2 and 1 with a 219.5. All totaled, the pair took home $4,486. week. This year I’m lucky because I have many good three-year-olds. I didn’t know what to pick to put in which futurity. I don’t think she’s less talented than the others – I just thought I’d show her today,” he said. “After this week we will know what horses are going where.” Abigayle Mixon and Archiesgunnatrashyya tied Mathieu Buton and Mega Smart N Trashy for reserve in the Open Level 4. Each marked a 218.5 and collected $2,608. Archiegunnatrashyya, by Gunnatrashya out of Jacs Electric Belle, is owned by Dee Dee Boeckman. Mega Smart N Trashy, by Gunnatrashya out of Einsteins Dun It, is owned by Barn-377 LLC. He and Buton also finished second in the Level 2, worth an additional $1,139.

It wasn’t in Rondanina’s plans to come to Tulsa, but a busy schedule necessitated the trip to Oklahoma. “I was going to go to Vegas, but I am a little bit busy, so brought this horse here Monday. He was a little fresh Monday, so I didn’t enter the Level 4,” Rondanina said. Although Spooks Smokin, by Spooks Gotta Whiz out of Smokin Marquita, might have been fresh earlier in the week, he came through in the show pen. “Yesterday he felt really good, and today, after the first turn, I knew he was with me and felt really good. He was with me totally. It was just the first stop. I was second to last on the set and there were a lot of tracks, so I ran him down watching and I needed to be more confident, but the other two stops I pushed more, and he did stop really good,” Rondanina recalled.

The SmartPak Non Pro Derby at the Tulsa Reining Classic featured $26,000 in added money, and the one-go format meant every entry was riding for a win. It was a great day of competition, and SmartPak Customer Care Representative Annina McMillan was on hand for the awards presentation. In the end, it was National Reining Horse Association $2 Million Rider Mandy McCutcheon who took home top honors with a score of 221.5. “I thank SmartPak for sponsoring this class. My 20

husband Tom, my dad Tim (McQuay), and now my son Cade are all sponsored by SmartPak – Tom and Tim for over a decade. They’re a great group of people and it’s a great company that we’re happy to be involved with,” McCutcheon said. McCutcheon, of Aubrey, Texas, was riding Codalicious, by Electric Code out of Custom Easy Breezy. She and Tom purchased the mare earlier in the year. “Joe Schmidt had her as a three-year-old and did quite well with her, and I saw her every day at the time. The owner told me she was just going to take her home and

not show her, so I asked if she’d be interested in selling her,” McCutcheon recalled. “I had never ridden her – just watched Joe show her – so I took her home, rode her and liked her, so we made a deal.” The pair’s first event was in March at the Oklahoma Reining Horse Association show in Tulsa. Although they had some things to work at, they then made the finals at both the National Reining Breeders Classic and the NRHA Derby. “She’s just a great-minded, solid show horse. Today she was really honest and sweet, and everywhere I wanted to go, she went,” McCutcheon said.

It was a big day for the women of the McCutcheon family. Mandy’s daughter, Carlee, was also competing, placing in levels 4 through 2 and winning the Non Pro Level 1. “I am so proud of Carlee. She’s turned into such a great showman. She doesn’t get to practice very often because she’s busy jumping, but she did such a great job today,” she said. The McCutcheon crew brought a large group of horses to Tulsa. “We have 38 horses here. It takes a village to get us all where we need to go. I’m so thankful for our team. Joe did a great job training this mare. I also thank Tom, Debbie Brown, Fernando Salgado, my parents, Cade, and everyone who works for us at the barn. I’m so thankful,” she said.

$30,000-added AustrianRHA Maturity & NRHA Show for 5 to 15-year-old Horses September 20 - 22, in Wiener Neustadt / Austria

When Helmut Schulz organized his first AustrianRHA Futurity 13 years ago, who would have thought that this event would become an institution in European reining and an NRHA show which has been among the top 20 NRHA shows worldwide for years. Now, Helmut Schulz will organize another major event – this time focusing on aged horses: the $ 30,000-added AustrianRHA Maturity & NRHA Show which is scheduled for September 20 – 22, 2019 at Wiener Neustadt. The NRHA Show is also a qualifier for the NRHA European Affiliate Championships 2021. With this Maturity in Wiener Neustadt, we want to establish an atttractive event for aged horses,“ says Helmut Schulz. „Even with an older horse like a 10- or 12-year-old, there should be the possibility of earning titles and good money. With this, we want to support trainers as well as the basis of reining. I think that most of the riders this year will be from Austria, but for the future, we expect lots of international competitors. If there are enough horses, we should reach a purse like the AustrianRHA Futurity.” The AustrianRHA Maturity & NRHA Show is open to all horses. There are four levels in the Open as well as in the Non Pro Maturity. All classes are NRHA approved. Besides the purse, there are Silversmith Buckles for the Maturity Champions and Maturity Halters for the Reserve Champions. The deadline of entry for the Maturity classes is September 10, 2019. Entries can be made online via www.showmanager.info .

Casey Deary wins Tulsa Reining Classic E

Earlier this year, Elementa joined the Tulsa Reining Classic as the sponsor of the Open Derby, which features $34,000 in added money. The Elementa Open Derby completes a busy week, and Casey Deary and Lonely At The Top won the class with a 225.5. That earned a check for $6,563, a Bob’s Custom Saddle, and prizes from the Tulsa Reining Classic. For Deary, the win was a bit of redemption. 28

“This has been a special horse for Rob Curtis and me. She’s been special all along and I haven’t felt like I’ve done her justice. It’s nice to come here and figure out how she needs to be prepared to get her shown,” Deary, a National Reining Horse Association Million Dollar Rider said. “She won the High Roller Futurity as a three-year-old, and I thought I had her figured out. She’s made the NRHA Derby finals twice and the NRBC finals once, but it’s just a

matter of figuring out what works for her.” Deary noted the mare, by Gunner out of Wimpys Little Chic, is a natural. “She has tons of ability everywhere. It’s just a matter of getting her to give it to me when I need it,” he said. As for their run, Deary said he was pleased. “She was pretty good. I safetied up a little running through the gate because I’ve had a little trouble in that spot with her all week. Then she turned really

good and circled as good as she ever has. I was pretty happy overall,” Deary said. “I thank Rob for sticking with me on her. She’s been something we have had huge expectations for, and I haven’t necessarily done my job getting that out of her, but he’s been with us,” he said. “Thank you also to Elementa for sponsoring this event. We appreciate your support and couldn’t do it without you.” 29

Andrea Fappani Wins Hollywoodstinsel

With more than $60,000 in added money, the Hollywoodstinseltown Open Futurity is a lucrative training ground, and on Saturday night, NRHA $5 Million Dollar Rider Andrea Fappani won the Open Level 4 on Itsallinthegenes, a horse he owns with his wife Tish. The pair marked a 224, besting the field of 89 by two points. The win came with a check for $14,593, as well as Bob’s Custom Saddle and awards from Oklahoma Equine Hospital and the Tulsa Reining Classic.

“This is a gelding we bred and raised. He’s by Smart Spook and out of Electric Genes, a mare I showed a few years back,” Fappani said. “Pat Warren owned the mare and let us do some extra embryos when she was done getting hers, and we thought it would be a great cross with Smart Spook.” Although Itsallinthegenes was bred to be a non pro horse for the Fappani family, the gelding showed a lot of talent. “This is his first outing. We think a lot of him, and he didn’t disappoint us today. We’re still trying to figure out what the plan is. My son Luca will show him at the High Roller in the Non Pro, and after that we’ll make up our mind if he is going to go to the futurity in the open or the non pro. He could go in both if he’s that good,” Fappani said. For Fappani, the Tulsa Reining Classic presents an opportunity to put some pressure on the three-year-olds, while still keeping them comfortable. “Today was just a consistent run. I don’t think we did anything amazing, but that’s my goal the first time out. He was spot on. Everything I asked he was there for me.” He added, “As a three-year-old, I couldn’t ask for more.” While there are some opportunities to show in futurities closer to home, Fappani prefers the Tulsa event. “I have been coming for the last few years, and there is a reason for that. This is a great place. The Silvas have sponsored this futurity and it’s a great event,” he said. “It’s an amazing arena. It’s big and nice, and there are plenty of places to get ready here. It’s one of my favorite, if not my favorite, for me to take my three-year-olds. It’s a great place for their first time out.” Tying for second in the Hollywoodstinseltown Open Level 4 Futurity was Fernando Salgado and Shawn Flarida. Both riders piloted their horses to scores of 222, winning $7,772 each. Shawn Flarida, the NRHA’s winningest rider, was at the reins of Surprized. Surprized, by Hang Ten Surprize and out of Snow White Dun It, is owned by Mike Vargo. Fernando Salgado, rode Gunnabeabrightstar. Gunnabeabrightstar, by ARC Gunnabeabigstar out of Abbie Be Tuff, is owned by Big Star Partners. Cade McCutcheon & Super Marioo – Open Level 3 and Open Level 2 Champions

ltown Open Futurity on Itsallinthegenes

It’s been a whirlwind month for 19-year-old Cade McCutcheon. He’s been a cast member on Paramount Network’s The Last Cowboy, which chronicled Cade and several notable riders’ preparation and path to the inaugural Run for a Million Event. At that event, just a few weeks ago, McCutcheon was crowned the co-champion, winning more than $300,000! Still in his first year as a professional trainer, McCutcheon has also been preparing his aged event horses for the futurities and derbies, including Super Marioo, with who he won the Hollywoodstinseltown Open Futurity Level 3 and Level 2 Championship with a score of 221. McCutcheon and Super Marioo also placed in the Level 4, bringing total earnings to $12,868. “He was solid and honest everywhere. He felt like a show horse. He might have been even more relaxed in the pen than he was outside. I’m really excited to see what the future holds for him,” McCutcheon said. Super Marioo, by Gunnatrashya out of HA Chic A Tune, is owned by Freddie Brasfield. “Gunny Mathison let us buy him a few weeks ago. He didn’t really want to sell him, but I think I’m one of the only guys he’d sell him to just because he’s that good of a friend,” McCutcheon said. “I think he’s a pretty special horse. I just haven’t ridden him a ton, so there are still some spots that could use some work, but I think he’ll be a big-time player.” McCutcheon says it’s the three-year-old’s natural talent that impressed him. “He’s a sweet horse with a lot of stop and turn. The rest of the stuff you can train, but you can’t teach that. He’s just got a lot of natural stop and turn, and that’s a big deal,” McCutcheon said. “I thank his owner Freddie and Gunny. They let me have the horse and that’s a great start.” David and Bonnie Silva, owners of Hollywoodstinseltown, have strong ties with the McCutcheon family. In fact, Hollywoodstinseltown now stands at Tom McCutcheon Reining Horses. “Dave and Bonnie have been great supporters of the whole industry for as long as I can remember, and especially for my family. I rode a horse for them, too,” he said. “They’re great friends, great clients, and I’m so happy to have their support.” Finishing in reserve for the Open Level 3 was Trevor Dare and Jerseys Baby Driver, who marked a 220, worth $3,583. Dare and Jerseys Baby Driver, by Yellow Jersey out of Wind Her Up Chic, also placed in the Level 4, worth an additional $4,758. Jerseys Baby Driver is owned by Janice Laney. Not only did he win the Open Level 3 title with Cee Mr Stop, he also won the Markel Novice Horse Open and Reserve in the Level 4 with a 224, for a check totaling $11,302. Bell piloted another entry – and full sibling to Cee Mr Stop – Mr Royal Hollywood, to second in the Level 3 and third in the Level 4 with a 222. Bell’s third entry, Gunnaoutfoxya, finished third in the Level 3, fourth in the Level 4, and tied for reserve in the Novice Horse Open Derby, winning $5,897, with a 221.5. Both Cee Mr Stop and My Royal Hollywood are owned by George and Carol Bell, while Gunnaoutfoxya is owned by Vandorp-DeBruin Reining Horses. Cee Mr Stop and Mr Royal Hollywood are both by Hollywoodstinseltown out of Cee Miss Hollywood. “It was special. These two are both horses my family has raised. They have owned the mother and the grandmother, and I’ve shown almost every horse this dam has ever had,” Bell said. “The mare I was third with, Gunnaoutfoxya (Gunnatrashya x Foxynicki) is a horse I bought at the futurity from Kelle Smith. It was a good day today.” Bell likened Cee Mr Stop to a different mode of transportation. “He’s a cool horse. He’s like pedaling a bicycle. If you want him to go fast you have to ask him to. He’s a big stopper and turns around easy,” Bell said. “He’s just a fun horse to show. Anyone could show him.” Cee Mr Stop only has a short layover before heading to Las Vegas for the High Roller Classic. “He’s going to rest for two days and then we leave again,” he said. “I thank everyone on the team – my wife Naike, my dad George and his wife Carol. They bred and raised these horses and got them to be the nice horses they are.” He added, “Thanks also

to my helpers Barbara and Vicki. They work unreal hard to make sure things are perfect when we get there every day.” 32

CADE WINS AGAIN!

Cade McCutcheon took the reins of Gunnersrufride from his father Tom McCutcheon following the NRBC earlier this year. “My dad showed him last year and gave him to me. This horse just needed to grow up a little bit. This is the first time we’ve shown him since NRBC,” McCutcheon explained. “He’s a good horse. He’s good minded, it just took a little bit of time for him to get where he needed to be to be competitive in the Derbies.” With a score of 221, it’s clear that McCutcheon and Gunnersrufride, by Gunners Special Nite out of Lil Ruf Showgirl, are on the right track. The pair also placed in Levels 4, 3, and the Novice Horse, earning $5,956 for owner White River Ag Products. “He was really good for me today. I wanted to just kind of cruise through to get ready for Vegas next week. Now I know what to work on in a couple spots,” he said.

McCutcheon, who recently tied for the win of the inaugural Run for a Million, has a special connection to Elementa, who sponsors the Open Derby. “I’m very thankful to Elementa for sponsoring this event. Cecilia Fiorucci has been awesome to me. She owns the great horse Custom Made Gun that I just won the Million on. It’s great for someone to come in and support a sport like this,” he said. 34

“One of the most Beaut

Participants enthusiastic about

It was the 13th AustrianRHA Futurity & NRHA Show, but the host Helmut Schulz and his team have probably never received so many words of praise and thanks before. Four days of outstanding Reining sports with 269 horses from 12 nations and 828 entries culminated in a grand final on Saturday evening, which even a half hour thunderstorm could not harm. “It was pouring down here, but nevertheless the atmosphere was great”, said Helmut Schulz. “People were thrilled. It is something special when you stand in the mud after pouring rain, and one after the other comes, congratulates you and thanks you. Thanks are due to our entire team, which has always been there with all its heart over the years. Nobody is just doing their job here.” In fact, the atmosphere in Wiener Neustadt was once again extraordinary. Statements like “This is the most beautiful tournament in Europe”, “We always feel at home here”. Or “A great team – they are like family here”, reflect the atmosphere at the AustrianRHA Futurity 2019. Already at the traditional Welcome Party the crowd was bigger than ever before. 44

Kyle Shaw and Chics Dig Shiners Win Toyon Ranch Emerging Horse Futurity

In early August, the Tulsa Reining Classic announced a new class for three-year-old reining horses – the Toyon Ranch Emerging Horse Futurity. The inaugural event was held Tuesday, August 22, and Kyle Shaw piloted Chics Dig Shiners to win the title. The pair also collected a check for $909, a saddle from Bob’s Custom Saddles, a Back on Track sheet, and a gift certificate to Shorty’s Hattery. It was only the second time

50

for Chics Dig Shiners, by Shine Chic Shine, to compete. “We’ve had him since about May. He’s a little on the greener side, which is why we showed him here in this class. It all worked out really well,” Shaw said. Shaw noted that his goal for the three-year-old reiner, owned by Dan Atkinson, was a smooth run. “Our aim was to circle cute and stay out of trouble, so we pretty well accomplished that. He’s a big turner and a big stopper, so I think the judging on that worked out in our favor,” he explained.

The River Falls, Wisconsin, trainer added that, if the situation were right, he would show in the emerging horse division again. “I especially will if we have a horse in a similar situation that could benefit from showing twohanded. Why not? I am very appreciative that they held this class here. I give a big thank you to Toyon Ranch for sponsoring the Emerging Futurity,” he said. Shaw, who rides with Justin Michaels in River Falls, Wisconsin, will show again on Wednesday. Finishing second was Mike

McEntire and KR Smart Gun. The pair marked a 215 and took home $769. KR Smart Gun, by Smart Spook and out of Gunner Git Ya Dun, is owned by Megan Lindberg. The idea for adding the new futurity was to create a threetiered menu of options to allow trainers to choose the right level of competition for their 3-yearold reining horses at the Tulsa Reining Classic. The second tier of the futurity divisions will be held on Wednesday, with the Tamarack Ranch Developing Horse Futurity. There will be more opportunities for futurity horses later in the week with the XCS Non Pro Futurity and the Hollywoodstinseltown Open Futurity.

David Silva Sr. to Receive

Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award In 2007, the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Hall of Fame Committee initiated the NRHA Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award, supported by the Reining Horse Foundation (RHF). Each year, the NRHA Board of Directors and past Hall of Fame inductees vote to approve a worthy candidate for recognition. This year’s recipient is David Silva, Sr. David Silva, Sr., and his wife, Bonnie, have both supported NRHA for well over 30 years as exhibitors, breeder, sponsors, and owners. Silva’s loyalty to the sport has encompassed all levels of reining, from grassroots all the way to elite competition. Silva has been a major donor to the National Reining Horse Youth Association (NRHyA) as well as RHF. He’s also sponsored a variety of shows throughout the Northeast Region. Together, the Silvas have served as leaders for both the Connecticut Reining Horse Association (CRHA) and the Eastern Pennsylvania Reining Horse Association (EPRHA), hosting meetings at their home, donating equipment, funding programs, and dedicating time to running the shows. During his years in the industry, Silva has cultivated and provided support for several well-known and respected reining trainers including Tim McQuay, Randy Cutbirth, Luke Gagnon, Sam Schaffhauser, Roger Brazeau, Borak Gibori, Lars Mortenson, Barbara Williams, Debbie Brown, Melanie Petroll, and Brad Giesbrecht. 52

In 2012, David Silva was the sixth person to join the NRHA Million Dollar Owners list. Some of his more notable horses include Hollywoodstinseltown, an NRHA Two Million Dollar Sire, and NRHA Hall of Famer Miss Tinseltown. Silva has bred, raised, and shown several other top reining horses including Gunners Tinseltown, Footworks Finest, Hollywood Downtown, Shiney Workboots, Great Footwork, and Reminic N Dunit. David Silva is a prime example of the dedication to and support of reining and its continued growth that NRHA’s Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award embodies.

SPIRIT OF THE AWARD This award is named after the legendary reining horse trainer known as the “father of reining,” Dale Wilkinson, the first inductee into the NRHA Hall of Fame. Wilkinson is a multiple NRHA Futurity champion and one of the founding members of NRHA. Wilkinson was an educator, promoter, and mentor to all reiners—professional and non pro—exemplifying how riders should conduct themselves and train and exhibit their horses. Because of his unmatched lifetime of accomplishment in reining, it’s entirely appropriate that the NRHA Lifetime Achievement Award is named for Dale Wilkinson. David Silva, Sr., will be recognized with this year’s class of NRHA Hall of Fame inductees at Sliders’ Night Out presented by Toyon Ranch on December 4 at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City during the NRHA Futurity. RHF is creating a special night, recognizing new and previous NRHA Hall of Fame inductees. For details on how to become a hall of fame table host or major event donor, contact RHF Executive Director Leslie Baker at lbaker@nrha.com, (405) 946-7400.

Tanya Tucker Adopts Animal Rescue as Her Platform By Craig Shelburne

and where it’s led her. Here’s her story, in her own words: It all started when my stylist was doing my hair: “Oh, Tanya, have you seen this?” She showed me this horse, the grandson of Seattle Slew, and they had starved him. And I go, “Find out where that horse is right now.” It made me angry. Then I thought, “No, anger’s not enough. I gotta do something about it.” So I called the people at Redemption Road Rescue. It happened to be in Jackson, Tennessee, of all places. And the other place that I’ve recently become involved with is Colorado State University of Veterinary Medicine in Fort Collins. I happened to be there visiting friends on the way to California and my dog Kona, my Golden Retriever, would have died, because he had cancer in his heart. But they took him in and saved his life. The number one cardiologist in veterinary medicine was in Fort Collins. A lot of those kind of places are not on the level, and they use animals to make money for themselves. This place is not that way and I was very impressed. I said, “I want to do something to help you guys.” Because they’re all volunteers and the work they do is just unbelievable. So I went to work for them and I’m still going to work for them. And the things that they did and the way they handled it, I’ve never been treated that good in a hospital. They even had the therapist come in and evaluate me — a grief therapist, in case I lost him. And I said, “Man, I’m going to work for them, too.” … This dog is a piece of me. He’s a part of me. And without him I’m not going to be the same. And it’s going to come, it’s going to happen, but I didn’t want it to happen right now. And you never want it to happen. But I said, “I’m going to go to work for these folks.”

At the end of Tanya Tucker’s music video for “The Wheels of Laredo,” there’s a message of support for Redemption Road Rescue, an organization that cares for neglected horses. During a recent interview, she explained how she discovered the program

WCRHA Star S

By Eileen Maxinoski, Photos by John O’Hara

The Star Spangled Slide slid into action on July 4th at the West Coast Reining Horse Association’s last affiliate show of the year. Red, white, and blue decorated the grounds of the Brookside Show Park in Elk Grove, California, from USA flags greeting exhibitors as they drove in to patriotically colored awards presented to class winners to the giant USA flag which was unfurled in the arena prior to the derbies. Many of the exhibitors use this show as a “showcation” for the family, as there are plenty of after-the-show activities to keep everyone busy. On-site meals were available every evening, preceded by libations and munchies beforehand at the Wine Down Bar conveniently located next to the Warm Up arena, and many families enjoyed the pool between and after classes. Saturday was a busy day for the WCRHA Youth. Youth reining classes ran all morning. Then, youth riders and non-riders were kept busy with, not one, but two fund raisers. During the day found the kids busy at the wash rack, holding their annual Horse Wash using groom products generously sponsored by Farnam. Saturday night was extra special as the kids held a dessert auction at the “In Honor of Delbert Tullos” potluck dinner. Delbert was a past WCRHA president and loyal supporter of the WCRHA youth. Michelle Devine reported that the evening was filled with great food, love, and laughter. Ollie Galligan, WCRHA in-house auctioneer, was supported by spotters Mike Boyle, David Hanson, and Jason Richards in procuring bids for the yummy desserts which averaged $75 to 70

$100 per item. Top selling dessert was a chocolate cake that brought in $300. In order to boost the bids on the last couple of items, Auctioneer Ollie offered to display his dancing best. The bidders met his challenge, and Ollie enthusiastically responded with his native country’s Irish Jig. Kudos to the youth and their advisor Tereasa Canada and supporter Michelle Devine for raising over $2500, proceeds of which will go towards the Year End Youth award saddles. Great job, WCRHA Youth!

Open Derby L4 champion: Gunnashine Ya and Jordan Larson The highlight of the show was undoubtedly the $13,000 Added Open Derby. Eighteen riders answered the challenge put forth by WCRHA trainers via Facebook—“Are you in it to win it?” And, they did not disappoint when it came to executing speedy, precise maneuvers in the show pen on Saturday evening. Their efforts were rewarded by a “standing room only” crowd that encouraged every rider with enthusiastic and raucous cheers and whistles. In the $10,000 Added 7M Ranch Level 4, Jordan Larson took Champion and Reserve with two horses owned by Tzvika Knaani who resides in Israel. Gunnashine Ya earned a score of 148 and Rio Killer Gun scored 147. The two horses earned $10,000 for their efforts. With scores of 144.5, third place was a tie between Reddy Aim Shine On, ridden by Ollie Galligan and owned by Elizabeth Atkins, and The P I Guy shown by Chuy Chavez and owned by Linda Barsalou. Fifth place went to Mister Smartypants, exhibited by Gabe Davide and owned by Eileen Maxinoski. In the $3000 Added Level 1, Ollie Galligan emerged the Champion on Reddy Aim Shine On. Reserve Champion went to Sam Kawanishi’s The Prima Ballerina with John Irish showing, scoring 143.5. Tieing for third and fourth with scores of 143 were Thad Carr on his own Heza Mega Watt and Mister Smartypants shown by Gabe Davide. Fifth place awards went to Mob Dolled Up ridden by John Irish, owned by Deborah Walker, who tied with Whizky Drinkn Princess, shown for the McLeod Family Farms by Kelly Keenan.

Spangled Slide The Non Pros came to play in their $7,500 Added Carr Performance Horses/Boyle Ranch Non Pro Derby. Nine hopefuls laid out their best efforts to claim money and prizes. In the $5000 Added Level 4, Brooke Boyle scored a 145.5 to emerge victorious on Sunset Nite, owned by her dad, Mike Boyle. Close behind for the Reserve Championship honors, with a 145, was Cam Essick on her own, home bred and raised, Loveya. Scores of 140 was good enough to split third and fourth monies between Lady Bang Bang, owned and shown by Britta Jacobson, and Whizky Drinkn Princess, shown by Campbell McLeod and owned by the McLeod Family Farms. Fifth place went to Nicole Cox piloting her own Gotta Smart Whiz to a score of 138.5. In Level 1, congrats go to Britta for winning the Championship and to Nicole Cox for the Reserve Championship. With a score of 137, Derek Brummett came in third on Ima Shiny Mister owned by himself and his wife, Kelli. Rica Macalvey was fourth on Doree Sims’ Got Guns A Blazin. Cam was Prime Time Champion with Britta coming in Reserve. Derek took third place honors with Vicki Dias coming in fourth on her own ARC Dun With Ya. Great job of showing from all the Non Pros.

A mega thanks goes to all those who financially supported the Open and Non Pro Derbies—7M Ranch, Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, Carr Performance Horses, Boyle Ranch, Galligan Performance Horses, Dr. Bo Felix, Dr. Marty Gardner, Larson Performance Horses, Hanson Performance Horses, Gilson Performance Horses, GD Performance Horses, Padilla Performance Horses, 55 Performance Horses, Chavez Performance Horses, and Walden Performance Horses. Aged Event Buckles were sponsored by Dave & Lisa Dentoni, Ed & Connie Glavis, Dave & Anne Driscoll, Geir & Jill Ramleth, Candice Thompson, Debbie Avila, Gretchen Vogelsang and Peterson Wealth Management. Other exhibitors had great results with their reining steeds in the NRHA Affiliate and WCRHA classes as well as an assort-

ment of AQHA approved classes. This was the last opportunity for WCRHA riders to qualify for the NRHA Regional Affiliate Finals to be held in October at the Idaho Horse Park. Pleasant temperatures, which continued throughout the show days, greeted Non Pro riders as they started the day on Thursday. Ken Hamilton laid down the winning run in the Novice Horse Non Pro Level 1 class on his wife’s reiner California Girl with a 70.5. Close behind by just half a point was Derek Brummett on Ima Shiny Mister. There was a three-way tie for first place in the Novice Horse Non Pro Level 2. Scoring 70s were Tereasa Canada on her EZ On The Slide, Britta Jacobson with her Ms Benz, and Megan Lynch on Revolutionic owned by herself and Ashley Lynch.

Open Maturity L4 champion: Chics Dream and Michael Boyle

The Open riders hit the arena next. Earning the Championship in the $2000 Added Grocery Outlet Open Maturity Level 4 was Mike Boyle on Elizabeth McHugh’s Chics Dream with a score of 145. Martin Padilla, on Cassandra Kindle’s Ill Be Smokinum, scored a 144.5 for the Reserve Championship. In the $1000 Added Grocery Outlet Maturity Level 1, Kain Emmons took the Championship on Morgan Davis’ Ghostsliderinthesky, earning a 141 from the judges. Christian Rammerstorfer on his faithful Maddox scored 139.5 for the Reserve. Mike Boyle also won the Open as Mr Twister Whiz, guided by David Hanson and owned by Lisa Dentoni, tied with Westside Rambler, shown by Martin Padilla and owned by Kurt Tate, for the second place awards. Mr Twister Whiz also won the Intermediate Open with his score of 144.5. Mister Smartypants was shown to a score of 143.5 by Gabe Davide to claim first place in the Limited Open as well as second in the Intermediate Open. Second in Limited Open was Chics Revolutions owned by Anna Lohr and shown by David Worley. The Prime Time Open class was the largest of the Open classes and was won by Mike Boyle and Chics Dream. Lady Bang Bang slid to a 138 to win second with her rider/owner Britta Jacobson.

AQHA Partners with Western Dressage Association of America

The American Quarter Horse Association is proud to announce its partnership with the Western Dressage Association of America. This alliance was formed as a result from the approval of western dressage as a new class starting at AQHA events in 2020.

WDAA was established in 2011 with the mission of building an equine community that combines the western traditions of horse and rider with classical dressage. With more than 1,500 members, WDAA is recognized as the sole affiliate representing the discipline of western dressage through the United States Equestrian Federation. Throughout the 2020 show

season, exhibitors will have the opportunity to participate in dualapproved classes at WDAA events, in addition to special events hosted by AQHA. AQHA is working to promote joint education efforts for AQHA judges to obtain approval through WDAA and for WDAA judges to have the opportunity to obtain an AQHA-approved specialized-judge certification. WDAA, in partnership with

AQHA, intends to serve western dressage enthusiasts through: Honoring the horse. Valuing the partnership between horse and rider. Celebrating the legacy of the American West. The inclusion of western dressage at AQHA events allows event placings and money earned available to AQHA for inclusion on horses’ achievement records, which also will be available through AQHA’s QData reports.

The Winningest

Exhibitor

Jim Bound and Bound To Be Dun broke the record for number of Select world championships by exhibitor. Jim Bound knew this Adequan® Select World Championship Show could be one for the books. Just two gold trophies short of tying the record for exhibitor with the most Select world championships, Jim brought two horses to compete in four events. He is also only the second exhibitor in the history of the 17-year show to have won the all-around title three years in a row. So, he had his sights set on breaking a couple of records. His chances were good, but one never knows. “I wanted to keep going until I tied the record (for most world championships by exhibitor),” Jim says. 78

NRHA and NRHA Reiner Earned Awards at 2019 AHP Equine Media

For Immediate Release – Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – June 10, 2019 – The annual American Horse Publications (AHP) three-day conference features the Equine Media Awards Banquet. Held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, this year, AHP’s Equine Media Awards competition featured nearly 600 entries for materials published in 2018. After the entries were reviewed and the judging was complete, the National Reining Horse Association’s (NRHA) monthly publication, the NRHA Reiner, and the marketing department received multiple awards.

94

Gary Carpenter, NRHA Commissioner, reflected on the awards received by NRHA. “As proud as I am of what our Reiner and marketing staff accomplished in this competition, the key to me is that competition helps us stay sharp and keep our edge. Ultimately, it’s the value we bring to NRHA members that matters.” NRHA Placing Entries 3rd Place—Editorial Event Coverage Single Article Circulation or Users Under 20,000; 14 Entries NRHA Reiner—2018 NRHA Derby By Megan Arszman

Floating Horses:

The Life of Casey Tibbs

Casey Tibbs was born in 1929 in a meager log cabin 50 miles northwest of Fort Pierre. Against his father’s wishes, Tibbs started riding in rodeos at age fourteen. According to Tibbs’ father, people participating in rodeos were bums and there was no future in it. Because of his love and involvement with rodeo, Tibbs wasn’t allowed to return home and was on his own from that time on.

At 19, Tibbs became the youngest man ever to win the national saddle bronc-riding crown. From 1949 to 1955, he became a nine-time World Champion, winning six PRCA saddle bronc-riding championships, two allaround cowboy championships and one bareback-riding championship. Tibbs’ life was thrust into the limelight. He appeared on the TV show To Tell the Truth and his photo appeared on the cover of LIFE Magazine. In 1958 he took a rodeo troupe to the World’s Fair in Belgium and introduced rodeo to Japanese spectators in 1973, staging 162 performances with his troupe. 112

Though he had the highs and lows often associated with accelerating fame, Tibbs always had time to visit children in the hospital and help with charity work. He lived life to the fullest, often pulling pranks on friends. After his rodeo career, Tibbs wrote, produced, starred and performed stunts in scores of movies. He produced the bestselling video Born to Buck as well as other films. A little-known fact is Tibbs was John Wayne’s right hand technical man when the actor needed advice to produce realistic western films. Tibbs also acted or performed stunts in movies alongside actors such as Henry Fonda, Will Rogers, Jr., Rod McKuen and Steven Ford, son of President Gerald Ford. Tibbs’ dream was to build a museum where all South Dakota rodeo greats could be honored. Though he died in 1990, the Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center in Fort Pierre was eventually completed in 2009. Floating Horses: The Life of Casey Tibbs, a documentary from Justin Koehler, reveals the rags-to-riches story of the rodeo legend. The film features historic footage and interviews with Sandra Tibbs, Charlie Daniels, Steven Ford, and many others.

70-year-old American Wins 1,000km Mongol Derby

‘Longest Horse Race in the World’

Robert Long, known by the nickname Cowboy Bob,

is the oldest winner of Mongol Derby, the 1,000 km world's longest horse race, sits on his horse near Jargalt, Mongolia, Aug. 14, 2019.

By Jesse Convertino

A 70-year-old American man has become the oldest person to win a Mongolian horse race that the Guiness Book of World Records lists as the world's longest multi-horse race in the world.

The 1,000 kilometer (621-mile) Mongol Derby draws competitors from around the world to participate in what the event claims is the “world’s toughest horse race” -- a grueling 10-day journey across the vast, green Mongol steppe. Every 20-to-40 kilometers, riders mount a fresh, semi-wild horse, of which there were more than 1,300 on hand -- and are about as likely to be thrown to the ground by a bucking horse than to begin the next leg of the race. None of that was enough to deter 70-year-old Robert Long of Idaho, who was declared the winner on Aug. 15. “It was a rush. It was good, good,” said Long -- affectionately known as “Cowboy Bob” -- shortly after finishing the final leg. The derby itself, organized by British-based exploration and extreme sporting group the Adventurists, is an annual race that's meant to recreate Mongolia’s legendary “Yam” system, which Genghis Khan set up n the early 1200s as one of the first long-distance postal transmission systems. 120

Let’s Keep Scottsdale’s Equestrian Heritage Strong

By Taryl O’Shea

The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show grew up in Scottsdale. And thanks to WestWorld the event has grown to the point where Scottsdale’s proud equestrian heritage is seen by a nationwide audience. The same is true for countless other events at WestWorld. The revenue and tax dollars generated directly and indirectly from events at WestWorld keep Scottsdale’s economy moving in the right direction.

But WestWorld is starting to show its age. It needs some upgrades so it can continue to attract spectacular events and make money for the city. Voting YES on Question 2 will help make that happen. It addresses infrastructure needs all over Scottsdale including WestWorld. The plan includes new arena lights, lights in the parking lot, a modern public address system, renovated restrooms, and upgrades to the barns. It would be a shame if WestWorld and other elements of Scottsdale’s infrastructure were to fall into disrepair. Voting YES will keep that from happening. The total bond package contained in Questions 1, 2, and 3 builds new sports fields, expands services for seniors, and builds and updates police and fire stations. Please keep our equestrian heritage strong and keep Scottsdale moving in the right direction. Vote YES on Questions 1, 2, and 3. Taryl O’Shea is the Director, Arabian Horse Association of Arizona

SHERRI GILKERSON AND HER ENDURING LEGACY

The Sherri Gilkerson Memorial Horse Show & Sherri Gilkerson Memorial Scholarship Fund.

More than just a great horse show or wonderful scholarships, there was a great spirit-led person full of life and love for her fellow man. Sherri Lea Hammond Gilkerson was born in Casper, Wyoming July 20, 1972. From an early age Sherri had an incredible love and connection for horses. Growing up in Lance Creek, Wyoming, she had local and national successes showing her horses, as well as being active in 4-H and rodeo. Sherri was Miss Rodeo 1992 for her county and 2nd runner up in Wyoming in 1993 for Miss Rodeo. Her other loves included church, family, hunting and fishing. While Sherri seemed a natural talent at all she did, she was a very hard worker.

She attended Laramie County Community College, competing on the LCCC rodeo team, and graduating from the Equine Management Program. She followed her passion for horses, and head for business, into the Equine Industry, working for Dr. Joe Armstrong, Armstrong Equine Services in La Mesa, New Mexico and NMSU. She married Marc Gilkerson, her friend and partner in 1994. They then worked for Cheyenne River Quarter Horse, in Hot Springs, South Dakota and others before starting their own training facility, Sherri Gilkerson Cow Horses, in Silt, Colorado. In 2004 they moved to Cave Creek, Arizona to work alongside fellow trainers, Jim Paul Sr, Dema Paul, Jimmie Paul and TJ Good. In the years that followed she had great successes, winning many honors including the 2005 NRCHA Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity Open & Limited Open Bridle on a talented horse named “Norman” (Camiseta Peppy) who was and still is owned by Linda Mars. Sherri was a rising star in the National Reined Cow Horse Association! Sherri’s life was tragically taken too soon in a horse-related accident October 30, 2006 at the tender age of 34. Her passing left a hole not only in the horse show world, but in the hearts of her family and friends. She was a woman of faith and loved by all who had the pleasure to know her. In honor of her memory among her contemporaries in Arizona and California, the AZRCHA and SCRCHA, joined with the newly established Sherri Gilkerson Memorial Scholarship Committee to establish the Sherri Gilkerson Memorial Bridle and Hackamore Spectacular, in 2007. Initially a respected and popular regional event, Sherri will now be honored at the national level with the establishment of the Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity Horse Show, Sherri Gilkerson Scholarship Youth Bridle and Youth Limited, September 8-16, 2019. It is the hope of Sherri’s family and friends that her memory will live on through the enrichment of young lives through education and sport. The Sherri Gilkerson Memorial Academic Scholarships are awarded each July. This year, 2019, the scholarship committee awarded seven academic scholarships to well-deserving NRCHA students, in addition to the scholarships that will be awarded at the 2019 Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity in the Youth Bridle and Youth Limited classes. Sponsored by Tres Osos Performance Horses and Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity. Information regarding the scholarships is available on THE SHERRI GILKERSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND Facebook page. We thank you for your support and interest in the memory of a truly great horsewoman, loved by all who had the good fortune to know her. In her words, she was a wife, daughter and child of God. We invite all to share in her great passion and….“RIDE LIKE SHERRI” 126

WHY RISK IT

CLEAN ARENAS MAKE FOR HEALTHY HORSES A Service to Improve Your Footing

3/8 Going up to 6 inches

HOW IT WORKS

We’ll pull into your existing arena and allow Rockyln to do her thing…Pick up rocks. With her pristine design, she is able to pick up a variety of rock sizes, as small as 3/8 going up to 6 inches deep of the surface sifting through without removing your footing. Rocklyn employs a sifting technology used to lift the existing footing from your arena on to a special/secret screen. The screen then sifts the unwanted rock from the arena, while the footing returns to the arena, and the remaining debris is deposited in the bucket. We’ll gather the rock and neatly pile it up for easy removal. She’s built of steel to ensure durability and consistency.

Unapproved compounded drugs linked to equine deaths The FDA is warning veterinarians and horse owners that one lot of compounded combination drug product containing pyrimethamine and toltrazuril has been associated with adverse events in at least three horses, two in Maine and one in Ohio, according to a release. Testing completed by the agency found that this lot of the product contained approximately 18 to 21 times the pyrimethamine indicated on the label. High doses of this medication can cause clinical signs such as seizures, fever and death, the release notes. Rapid Equine Solutions of Aston, Pennsylvania, compounded the product, which was labeled as containing toltrazuril 416 mg/ml and pyrimethamine 17 mg/ml, and packaged in 60 ml oral paste syringes for the treatment of the neurologic disease Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM). The products from the lot have been accounted for and are no longer in distribution. The company learned of the adverse events in late May and initiated a recall to consumers the same day. The FDA is working with company and state agencies to investigate the adverse events, the release states. According to the release, an incident linked to a different compounder also involved erroneously formulated compounded pyrimethamine/ toltrazuril products that led to four equine deaths in 2014. It notes that compounded products are not FDA-approved animal drugs and that toltrazuril is not approved for use in horses. There are several drugs that are FDA-approved for the treatment of EPM, according to the FDA, and the agency encourages horse owners to consult their veterinarian for treatment advice. The agency asks veterinarians, horse owners and caretakers to report adverse events in horses being treated with compounded pyrimethamine-containing products.

Nate Tip of the Month

Cooling System Failure Prevention Tip

Living in Arizona we all know how important a functional cooling system is for your vehicle, so we're going to cover how to keep it that way and prevent failures within the system. The owner's manual for your vehicle is a great source of information but some are lacking in the maintenance category, especially regarding coolant. It's not unusual to see coolant recommended to be changed at 100k-150k miles. In our opinion that's severely over-due and recommend having the system flushed every 30k-50k miles depending on how it tests. In the early stages of coolant break down the coolant may appear discolored, cloudy, or just plain dirty. If you see these signs, then it's time to give us a call. Ideally the system should be serviced before you

Truck Talk with Nate Brekken see these symptoms exist. As it worsens a chemical reaction occurs affecting components internally. At that point if you see signs of rust in the radiator, reservoir or cap then you may have waited too long.

Rust can spread throughout like wildfire, so if it's visible at these access points there's a good chance it can be found in the hoses, heater core, engine block, cylinder heads, oil cooler, basically everywhere. We've seen

some that have been neglected for long enough that we cannot use a flush to clean the system and requires replacement of expensive components. As the chemicals in the coolant are lost it cannot protect the metal surfaces allowing it to eat away metal anywhere it flows through which can also be damaging to seals and both causing

134

leaks at some point. So how do we prevent these issues? Our cooling system flush method begins by running a cleaner through the system to break up rust, scale, corrosion, and other deposits from the system. We then use our flush machine to reverse flow the coolant to exchange the old coolant with new coolant using the specified type for each engine. Keeping up on this single maintenance will help prevent costly repairs and vehicle downtime. If you have any questions about your cooling system or would like to schedule in for service give us a call! 623.582.4404

A Literary Legend of the Western Frontier L. Ron Hubbard spent his formative years in a rugged Montana, among the cowpunchers, lawmen, and desperados who would later people his Wild West adventures with remarkable authenticity. Living on the frontier, he was not only breaking broncs at a tender age but also among the few whites ever admitted into Blackfoot society as a bona fide blood brother. During a long and illustrious literary career, Ron threw a wide loop over the land of his beginnings and wrote 38 tales of honor, integrity, and courage of the American West.

Comprehensive guidelines providing the most current information on diagnostics, transmission, risk factors, control and biosecurity strategies for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) have been published online by the American Association of Equine Practitioners. EIA is a viral disease with no cure and no vaccine for prevention. Horses confirmed positive can be quarantined for the remainder of their lives but are usually euthanized. According to USDA APHIS Veterinary Services, 1,187,536 EIA tests were conducted in the U.S. in 2018, resulting in detection of 51 positive horses. The AAEP’s EIA Guidelines place special emphasis on recent changes in the epidemiology of the disease in the U.S. According to guidelines’ co-author Angela

AAEP Publishes Equine

Infectious Anemia Guidelines

Pelzel-McCluskey, DVM, MS, national equine epidemiologist for USDA APHIS Veterinary Services, a new high-risk group has emerged in the past five years in which the primary method of disease spread is iatrogenic transmission—most commonly through needle, syringe and IV set reuse and possibly through blood contamination of multi-dose

drug vials and use of illegal blood and serum products from other countries. “While our cases of EIA in the U.S. used to be found primarily in untested or under-tested populations with disease spread by biting flies, the majority of EIA cases are now being found in Quarter Horse racehorses with ties

to unsanctioned racing,” said Dr. Pelzel-McCluskey. “Investigation of these cases has shown that unhygienic practices by the owners and trainers of these horses is spreading the disease by iatrogenic means.” Dr. Pelzel-McCluskey advises equine practitioners to be aware of the potential for EIA transmission in this population and to provide educational outreach to their clients on testing high-risk horses and implementing appropriate biosecurity practices to prevent disease spread. The EIA Guidelines, available as a PDF file, were co-authored for the AAEP’s Infectious Disease Committee by Drs. Pelzel-McCluskey and Katie Flynn, equine staff veterinarian at the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

June Liston,

Coming in for a Landing

a Captain for United Airlines, pilots Boeing 777’s and American Quarter Horses. By Abigail Boatwright

THIS IS HORSE COUNTRY AT ITS BEST Wild Horse Country Located in southern Colorado, in the

Sangre de Christo mountain range. You will experience beautiful scenic views as you climb from the floor of the San Luis Valley to the top of the mesa. As you leave the small community of San Luis you will enter into a section of the west that is still “open range” (no fences) where it is common to find bands of wild horses, sometimes grazing along the highway that leads to Taos, New Mexico. Through out the area horses are found where ever they choose to wander. Additional wildlife; deer, elk, and bear abound. With the privacy afforded by few neighbors and large parcels, this is truly a great place to live free, in the western way.

June Liston traded riding horses to pursue a pilot’s license when she was 17. Today, she’s a captain aboard United Airline’s largest plane, the Boeing 777. When she’s not flying around the world to places like Hong Kong and Tel Aviv, the Scottsdale, Arizona, resident is back in the saddle, riding one of her two American Quarter Horses. And this week, June’s competing at the 2019 Adequan® Select World Championship Show in Fort Worth, Texas. June says 3% of all airline pilots are female – and she says that number is gradually increasing. But of that 3%, only about 0.5% are captains like June. She didn’t start out as a captain on the big planes – she worked up to it over the years. “There are a lot of other jobs that we do – you’re a meteorologist, you’re working with load planning, you’re a manager, too,” June says. “My flights usually have a crew of 19 with flight attendants and pilots. It’s more than just flying the airplane. You have to manage a lot of people and keep everyone working together.” Now in her 31st year with United, June primarily flies to Asia, Europe and the South Pacific. Her favorite location? Taipei. Favorite airport? The one in St. Maarten, because she gets to land right beside the ocean. She most enjoys going to faraway places, and working with great people. The best part of flying, in June’s opinion, is landing the planes. “I love landing, because that’s where you get to show what you can do,” June says. “It’s the fun part, where you get to finesse it a little bit.”

SINCE 1910

PENDLETON ROUND-UP The Pendleton Round-Up is excited to announce the selection of cowgirl artist Donna Howell-Sickles as its 2019 rodeo poster artist. Howell-Sickles is an award winning artist from Saint Jo, Texas known for her colorful, energetic and joyful depictions of the American cowgirl. Donna’s work is included in prestigious museum and prominent private collections. Her art is carried by galleries across the west. A book, Cowgirl Rising, celebrates her works.Donna was selected as a member of the Cowgirl Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Texas, in recognition for her powerful portrayals of historic and contemporary cowgirls.

Donna attributes her love of the cowgirl and western imagery to a vintage postcard of a cowgirl on a horse captioned, “Greetings from a Real Cowgirl from the ole Southwest”.Inspired by the charm and confidence of the woman in the image, Donna has made the iconic cowgirl–and all that she stands for– the central theme in her contemporary Western settings of mixed-media artwork.

“Employing a bold palette of vibrant colors and dynamic visual movement, Donna is a perfect fit to capture the color and drama of the Pendleton Round-Up.There is no better embodiment of the confident, exuberant, fearless and playful spirit of Donna’s cowgirls than the members of the Pendleton Round-Up Court celebrated in the poster.Paired with the iconic colors of the Round-Up’s bucking chutes and the historic TiPi Village, Donna has created a masterful poster”, observed Round-Up Publicity Director Pat Reay. “The historic Pendleton Round-Up is rich with iconic images, so choosing just one for a poster was a challenge.Portraying a Round-Up queen in a posture of welcome and celebration atop one of the red bucking chute gates of the arena, surrounded by the triangles of the Tipi Village seemed to be a good solution. The red roses around her hat underscore the beauty of the entire event. I look forward the attending the Round-Up again in September. ”, commented Donna The posters will be available for purchase on the 25th of March, according to Pendleton Round-Up Retail Manager Nicole Herranen. In addition to the basic poster, special limited editions will be available as well.Nicole invites anyone interested in the poster, and related products bearing the image, to call the Round-Up store at (541) 276-2553 or visit the Round-Up web site at pendletonroundup.com/shop.Nicole also reminds Round-Up fans that Donna will be on hand during the RoundUp this September 11 – 14 to sign the poster and help celebrate the 109th edition of the Round-Up 150
