SINCE 1981 WE GROW 1601 NUTRITIONAL WHITE PAPER

PREMIUM WESTERN FORAGE

GUARANTEED ANYALYSIS WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? Standlee Premium Western Forage®

Every Standlee Premium Western Forage product comes with a guaranteed analysis of our forage. We list the minimum percent of crude protein, the minimum percent of crude fat, the maximum percent of crude fiber, as well as the maximum percent of ash. These values are all determined by sending samples to a laboratory and having it analyzed. While it is important that we provide you with this information, it is also important that we make sure you know why each of these values are important. Here is a brief summary of the importance of each of these nutritional components.

Crude protein: Protein provides amino acids which are involved in nearly all of the vital processes in a horse. They are also responsible for helping build bones and build and repair muscles and soft tissues. Horses at different life stages and work levels require different amounts of protein. Growing horses and those used for breeding require a higher level than pleasure and performance horses.

energy, it has to first be converted to volatile fatty acids. This is done by bacteria in a horse’s gut which then provides the horse with 30-70% of their digestible energy needs. Due to its importance in digestive health, a horse’s diet should be composed of at least 50% fiber.

Ash: Ash is the mineral portion of forage that remains after the complete burning of combustible material during laboratory analysis. The ash content in a forage can come from both internal (what the plant is made of) and external (like dirt when forage is harvested) sources. While not a direct measurement of nutrient content in forage, ash is used to determine the total digestible nutrients (TDN) which is one way of determining the energy content in forage.

Crude fat: The function of fat is to provide energy for the horse. Horses can also get energy by eating carbohydrates, but when comparing the same volume, fat provides more energy than carbohydrates. Forages contain very low amounts of fat so horses that need a higher fat diet will need to be supplemented with an additional fat source.

Crude fiber: Fiber is the most important part of a horse’s diet. In addition to providing energy, fiber also helps the digestive system function properly. Horses are not able to get energy directly from the consumption of fiber. In order for fiber to provide them with

At Standlee Premium Western Forage, we aim to provide our customers with the best forage possible. One of the ways we do this is by testing our products for nutrients analysis and providing that information to you as a guarantee. WWW.STANDLEEFORAGE.COM 800-398-0819

OUR COMPANY HISTORY

same passion as their father and grandfather. Today Dusty Standlee, the eldest of the Standlee children, is the CEO and President of Standlee Hay Company.

As a young boy growing up in rural Eden, Idaho, Mike Standlee could not have envisioned the expansive modern day Standlee Hay Company.

Gene and June Standlee taught their five children at a very young age about the meaning of a strong work ethic and the joys of farming. Mike Standlee and his siblings kept very busy working and growing up in their family’s forage fields of Southern Idaho. During Mike’s youth, he and his brother Lynn developed a mutual love and passion for forage farming.

Standlee Hay Company, Inc. now owns/leases over 18,000 acres and harvests an additional 13,000 acres of carefully managed alfalfa, timothy grass, orchard grass, alfalfa/grass and orchard/alfalfa forage. Our facility in the small town of Eden, Idaho is 142,000 square feet. We have an extensive customer base both domestically and internationally.

Lynn C. Standlee Standing by Truck 1975

Upon graduating from High School and after many years of mentoring by their father Gene, Mike and his brother Lynn set out on their own to become farmers in their own right. Mike bought a swather and Lynn bought a stacker and thus the two of them began custom farming while still continuing to work on their family farm. Mike and Lynn worked together in the custom forage business and in the horse business for many years.

to market to the Eastern United States. Mike’s vision to grow a market in the East required land and in 1990 he purchased his first farm of 240 acres. In 1991, Mike purchased a big bale press and proceeded to open new markets. In 2001, he put in a 108,000 square foot forage facility that included; a big bale press, cuber, pelleter, bagger, and cottonseed piler.

Mike Standlee and his wife Whendy with just $900 in their pockets started what today is known as the Standlee Hay Company. With an old 1969 Peterbilt truck, a used swather and baler, Mike put up enough forage

Like his father, Mike wanted to pass down the farming tradition to his children. Mike and Whendy’s children began working in the forage fields at a young age and they too developed the

3 WIRE VS. TRAINING MATERIAL COMPRESSED

= Compressed Bale Before

Compressed Bale After Expansion

FEEDING COMPRESSED BALES •

Always feed by weight not volume.

Feed 1.5-2.5% of body weight in forage per day. For a 1000 lb horse, that’s approximately 15-25 lbs per horse per day.

Standlee compressed bales weigh approximately 50 lbs per bale, but will vary slightly so always weigh your horse’s forage.

Cut bales during the previous feeding to allow for expansion and be sure bale is placed in a large tub, wheelbarrow or something of that nature to keep the forage contained.

When you cut and remove the straps from the bale, as an example, you may count approximately 11 flakes. However in this case, after 6-12 hours of expansion, you would then count approximately 22 flakes. You haven’t magically made more hay, it has just expanded into normal flakes.

As an example, if you count 22 flakes in the bale (number of flakes may vary), you would divide 50# by 22 flakes and the flakes would average 2.27# each. Using this example, a 1000 lb horse with no other forage should consume around 15-25 pounds per day or 6 to 11 flakes per day (be sure to weigh your horse’s forage).

Once you have become accustomed to the expansion of the bale, you will likely not need to cut the bale in advance of feeding the forage, since you will be familiar with the product.

For any questions, please contact Standlee Premium Western Forage® at customerservice@standleeforage.com or 1-800-398-0819. Due to natural characteristics of forage and low processing, our products are unique by their very nature and products may have some slight variations. SPWF makes every effort to ensure any variance does not affect the quality of the product.

PREMIUM ALFALFA COMPRESSED BALES Premium Alfalfa Compressed Bales are formed by allowing Standlee Premium Western Forage® to grow to the proper stage of maturity, cutting the plants, allowing them to sun-cure (dry) to an acceptable moisture level and baling the forage at the optimal time. Standlee Premium Western Forage® creates compressed bales of forage from a large 4’x4’x8’ bale that is put through a press, sliced horizontally, pushed onto a scale, weighed, compressed and then banded. Alfalfa forage is low in sugar, moderately high in protein, high in calories and digestible fiber. Forages are non-perishable and can last for long periods of time if stored properly. Always store forages in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area. As long as the product is properly stored, forages can last for well over a year or more. Available in 50 pound bales. Benefits: • Low in carbohydrates. • Natural forage length mimics grazing. • Slow intake, stimulates chewing and minimizes digestive upset. Feeding Instructions: On average, most horses comfortably consume 2% of their body weight in dry forage per day. This equates to 20 lbs of dry forage per day for a 1000 lb horse. Standlee recommends that you weigh the amount of forage provided to each horse to ensure you are feeding the proper amount. This is especially important with baled and compressed forage since similar volumes of forage (a flake for example) vary in weight. Standlee also recommends cutting the bands on compressed bales and allowing the bale to expand overnight to avoid overfeeding. Feed Standlee Premium Western Baled or Standlee Premium Western Compressed Forage at a minimum rate of 1.5% of body weight. Gradually increase or decrease the amount of forage to maintain desired body condition. Never feed moldy or insect infested forage to horses. Always provide free-access to fresh, clean water.

CUT DOWN WHITE PAPER 1302 THE CARBS

NUTRITIONAL

LOW CARB FORAGE OPTIONS Dr. Tania Cubitt and Dr. Stephen Duren, Performance Horse Nutrition and Standlee Premimum Western Forage® Consultants The statement, “I need low carbohydrate hay for my horse”, has become popular in recent years. The reasons, or potential reasons, for wanting low carbohydrate hay could be many. Included in the list of reasons for horse owners to want a low carbohydrate feed for their horse include the desire to influence or modify behavior, or sensitivity to socalled carbohydrate diseases including Tying-up, Cushing’s Disease, Laminitis, Insulin Resistance (IR) and Obesity. But before we recommend that our clients try to reduce or eliminate carbohydrate from the equine diet, we should understand more about carbohydrates in forages. Structural carbohydrates (fiber) are typically found in the the cell wall of the plant and are often referred to as fiber. Analytically the major carbohydrates associated with the cell wall are cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Baled hay, mature pasture grass, beet pulp and soybean seed coats are good sources of structural (fibrous) carbohydrate. Structural carbohydrates are resistant to

enzyme digestion in the small intestine and must be fermented by bacteria in the horse’s hindgut. Non-Structural Carbohydrate (NSC) is carbohydrate associated with the inner portions of the plant cell, or plant cell contents. NSC is made up sugars, starches and fructans. This can be further broken down into the analytical terms water soluble carbohydrates (WSC; sugar + fructan) and ethanol soluble carbohydrates (ESC; sugar). Non-Structural Carbohydrate then becomes the sum of WSC and Starch. During photosynthesis, green plants ‘fix’ atmospheric carbon dioxide in the presence of light, resulting in the production of energy. When energy is produced in excess of the requirement of the plant for growth and development, it is converted into storage, or ‘reserve’ carbohydrates. In warm season grasses (native grasses; Big bluestem, Indiangrass), starch is the primary storage carbohydrate, whereas in cool season grasses (e.g. Orchard grass or Timothy) sugar and fructan are the primary stor-

age carbohydrate. As a practical point, commonly fed legumes such as clover and alfalfa also store carbohydrate as starch. Starch production and storage occurs in the chloroplasts of the leaf, this is a self-limiting process with starch productions ceasing once the chloroplasts become saturated. Legumes and warm season grasses typically have lower NSC contents than other grasses due to this self-limiting function. Studies have shown that environmental conditions cause significant changers in the amounts of NSC that accumulate in forage plants. Factors that reduce growth, but do not affect energy storage result in the accumulation of elevated concentration of NSC. Conversely factors which encourage growth generally result in a reduction of NSC content. Standlee Hay Company scientifically monitors soil fertility and irrigation of all their forages which results in optimal plant growth rates and typically lower NSC contents.

NUTRITIONAL OR TIMOTHY 1701 WHITE PAPER ORCHARD?

THE BIG TWO FORAGE GRASSES: TIMOTHY AND ORCHARD Dr. Stephen Duren, Performance Horse Nutrition and Standlee Premium Western ForageÂŽ Nutritional Consultant High quality forage is critical for proper digestive function in horses. Forage (hay/pasture) makes up 60-100% of the diet for horses, depending on their function and activity. For horses that are stalled, or for horses that do not have abundant pasture, stored forage in the form of hay is the primary source of forage. The most popular choices for grasses to be utilized as horse hay are Timothy Grass and Orchard Grass making them the big two forage grasses.

Timothy Grass Timothy Grass is the traditional favorite among horse owners. Much of this tradition is due to the fact that Timothy was one of the first grasses cultivated for horse hay. Therefore, feeding Timothy Grass has a well-established comfort level with horse people. High quality Timothy Grass contains a moderate amount of protein, usually testing at approximately 8% protein. It has a consistent and balanced ratio of calcium to phosphorus and Timothy Grass has a low to moderate calorie content. Timothy Grass is also a rich source of fiber. Seemingly, the only potential draw-back with Timothy Grass is availability. Timothy grass usually yields just two cuttings per year and requires a significant amount of water to grow. These two factors along with its

traditional popularity limit the supply of Timothy Grass hay.

Orchard Grass Orchard Grass is the emerging super star of the horse hay world. Orchard Grass is a highly palatable grass with a high nutrient content. Orchard Grass is higher in protein (10-12%), higher in calorie content and contains the same balanced levels of calcium and phosphorus as Timothy grass. The higher calorie content of Orchard Grass is a result of higher fiber digestibility compared to Timothy Grass. The high nutrient intake delivered by Orchard Grass hay translates into potentially less grain the horse would need to eat to satisfy energy and protein requirements. Compared to Timothy Grass, Orchard Grass grows better in moderate drought conditions and provides a solid three hay cuttings per year. With three cuttings instead of two cuttings, Orchard Grass produces consistent soft texture hay that horses readily consume with minimal or no waste. Standlee Premium Western Forage produces both Timothy Grass and Orchard Grass forage products. This helps ensure your horses always have a high quality grass forage option to utilize.

PREMIUM FORAGE NUTRITIONAL

1303 PAPER HELPS WHITE TO PREVENT ULCERS FORAGE & GASTRIC ULCERS Dr. Tania Cubitt and Dr. Stephen Duren, Performance Horse Nutrition and Standlee Premium Western Forage® Nutritional Consultants The horse has evolved as a grazing animal; forage plays a pivotal role in equine health. Horse are non-ruminant herbivores also known as “hindgut fermenters.” Their digestive tract is made up of a simple stomach, small intestine and large intestine. The natural feeding habit of the horse is to eat small amounts of roughages often. Domestication has brought a change to this. Modern management practices incorporate stabling, increased grain-based concentrate consumption, meal feeding and limited access to pasture. This has led to a myriad of problems by undermining the horses’ digestive capabilities. One of the most common disorders in horses today is gastric ulcers.   Equine gastric ulcers are a significant  problem in certain equine populations: an estimated 58% of show horses and 93% or racehorses are affected. Foals are also at risk with an estimated 25-50% developing lesions. Horses that are typically fed diets high in soluble carbohydrates which produce volatile fatty acids when broken down in the stomach, can damage the protective barriers of the non-glandular areas allowing acid to irritate and ulcerate the tissue. Another issue with the current management of horses is meal feeding accompanied by long periods of fasting. This enables the buildup of acid in the stomach which can splash up to the non-glandular regions and

cause ulceration. Given the prevalence of gastric ulceration in horses today, researchers have investigated several nutritional aspects of the disorder. A study looking at feed type on gastric ulcer formation showed an increased risk of gastric ulcers in young growing horses consuming high grain diets as compared to a forage diet. After 4 weeks on the high grain diet, the ulcer scores for the horses had increased by about 30%, and after 8 weeks, the scores had increased about 3-fold. Thus, a diet high in roughage appears to promote better digestive health as reflected by the  gastric ulcer scores, whereas high grain diets caused greater gastric irritation.1 Forage contains all of the essential nutrients required by horses: water, energy, protein, vitamins and minerals. Grain concentrates and supplements should only be fed to compliment the forage being offered. If high quality forage is being fed, most horses only require a low intake vitamin and mineral pellet (ration balancer pellet). Feeding Standlee Premium Western Forage® products (bagged and baled forage) will boost the quality, consistency and nutrient profile of marginal quality hay.  This will help horses satisfy their nutrient requirements and decrease the amount of grain that must be fed, therefore decrease the horses risk for developing

gastric ulcers. Other research groups have focused on the type of forage fed to horses and its effect of ulcer formation and severity. Providing good-quality alfalfa or alfalfa-mix forage can help buffer stomach contents and reduce gastric acidity. Alfalfa forage has been shown to buffer gastric contents and decrease gastric ulcer severity in horses housed in stalls and exercising. 2,3 Also, pasture turnout when possible can help reduce stress and prevent gastric ulcers. Standlee Premium Western Forage® provides premium, high-quality alfalfa and alfalfa/grass mixed forage that can be fed to all classes of horses. This forage is grown in the Western United States and it is without equal, with respect to quality and nutrient profile. They provide regular  baled forage as well as pelleted and cubed forms of these forages.

PREMIUM TIMOTHY GRAB & GO® COMPRESSED BALES Premium Timothy Grab & Go® Compressed Bales are formed by allowing Standlee Premium Western Forage® to grow to the proper stage of maturity, cutting the plants, allowing them to sun-cure (dry) to an acceptable moisture level and baling the forage at the optimal time. Standlee Premium Western Forage® creates Grab & Go® compressed bales of forage from a large 4’x4’x8’ bale that is put through a press, sliced horizontally, pushed onto a scale, weighed, compressed, banded and then shrink-wrapped. Timothy Grass forage is highly palatable, is low to moderate in protein and high in digestible fiber. Forages are non-perishable and can last for long periods of time if stored properly. Always store forages in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area. As long as the product is properly stored, forages can last for well over a year or more. Available in 50 pound bales. Benefits: • Highly palatable.

HERE IS WHY 1706 BEET PULP NUTRITIONAL WHITE PAPER

BEET PULP: WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW? Dr. Tania Cubitt, Performance Horse Nutrition and Standlee Premium Western Forage® Nutritional Consultant

What is Beet pulp? Beet pulp is a by-product of the sugar industry. Sugar is extracted from the beet leaving the pulp. The sugar finds its way into snacks designed to appeal to kids, while the pulp is used as an ingredient in animal feeds (>5% sugar). Beet pulp is rich in fiber and is unique in its form, as it is soluble fiber and highly digestible. Beet pulp is fermented in the large intestine of the horse similar to hay, pasture and chaff. However, since the fiber in beet pulp is soluble, it is more readily digestible than pasture, hay or chaff. In fact, beet pulp provides digestible energy ranging between that of good quality hay and grains, sourcing energy from soluble fiber as opposed to energy from starches and sugars. Consequently, it is ideal for all equines, especially for horses where weight gain is desired, as it increases the caloric content and energy density in the diet.

The safe option When horses need additional calories in the diet, horse owners often feed grain. Grains, such as oats, maize and barley are digested in the small intestine of the horse. If too much grain is fed in a single meal, it can result in undigested grain passing into the large intestine. Once in the large intestine, bacteria ferment the undigested grain, potentially resulting in digestive and metabolic disorders such as colic and laminitis. Beet pulp avoids these potential digestive and metabolic issues as beet pulp is considered a super fiber – high calorie content and safe to feed. Beet pulp is ideal for horses that suffer from poor dentition due to its soft consistency once soaked and provides horses that can’t chew hay with an adequate fiber source, while still maintaining body condition. Offering it to your horse as a mash offers the additional benefit of increasing their water intake. Generally, it is recommended when feeding beet pulp alone, that it should be soaked. This helps with improving the hydration status of the horse as well as slowing down intake. Care must be taken especially in warmer climates that the soaked beet pulp is not allowed to sit out for long periods (overnight) to become stale.

Provides energy, but low in non-structural Carbs Beet pulp is widely used in the feeding of horses around the world and has been recommended as a substitute for hay in rations for horses with respiratory problems. It has also been recommended as a replacement for a portion of poor quality hay in performance horse diets to improve the quality of fiber and increase the energy density of the daily diet. It is used as a method to assist underweight or thin horses gain additional condition without the use of grains, while still lowering starch intake and retaining the digestible energy level as well. Accordingly, it is also ideal for endurance and excitable horses,

where calm conditioning is required, as it provides slow release energy and helps to restore and maintain fluid balance in the body when previously soaked. A study showed that horses had higher muscle glycogen content, and lower blood and muscle lactate content, after exercise when fed beet pulp in their diets as compared to oats. Muscle glycogen content is the main source of stored energy used for exercise in horses. Lactate (or lactic acid) accumulation can cause muscle fatigue which results in a decline in performance. Beet pulp has a lower glycaemic index compared to any type of grain, meaning it has a small effect on blood glucose levels. A low glycaemic index feed may have a positive influence on behavior (less fizz), along with helping to control nutrition levels in horses susceptible to metabolic related disorders, such as laminitis, insulin resistance, Cushing’s, grain intolerance, Equine Metabolic Syndrome, PSSM and tying-up.

NUTRITIONAL WHITE PAPER

FEEDING THE SENIOR HORSE Dr. Tania Cubitt & Dr. Stephen Duren, Performance Horse Nutrition and Standlee Premium Western Forage® Nutritional Consultant

Performance Horse Nutrition It is not uncommon to hear of individual horses that may be in their upper 20’s or early 30’s. Why are horses living so long? Several potential reasons exist including improved internal parasite control, better nutrition, advances in veterinary care, and less strenuous work. As horses become old their bodies naturally begin to fail. This leaves their owners with the responsibility of providing proper care for their senior horses. A common question many owners have is “When does a horse become a senior?” In general, horses between 18 and 20 years of age are thought to be approaching their senior years. However, a better description of senior

is when a horse becomes a “Nutritional Senior.” A nutritionally senior horse is one that can no longer eat its normal diet and maintain proper body condition. Nutritionally senior horses typically have one or more of the following conditions: decreased nutrient absorption, dental problems, increased sensitivity to stress. A geriatric horse is a condition related to diseases and disorders caused by aging, not by a specific number of years spent on this earth. Understanding these conditions will allow care givers to modify feeding programs to ensure proper nutrition.

Physical Signs Some common physical signs of aging

that require nutrition management are loss of weight, decrease in body condition, loss of muscle tone and mass over the top line, sway backed appearance, chronic diarrhea and dehydration, reduced mobility and agility, greying of muzzle and coat, decrease in coat and hoof quality, reduced fat deposits above the eyes, and dental problems.

Digestive and Metabolic Changes in the Senior Horse: Decreased Nutrient Absorption Exposure of horses to intestinal parasites causes scarring of the digestive tract. These scars result in damage to the lining of the intestine which decreases nutrient absorption.
