EE DD I T O R ’ S N OO TT EE With the huge number of responsibilities and chores we all take on in our day to day life we can sometimes find that our health suffers, getting pushed to the back of the queue of importance. That gym session that you promised yourself you would go to seems much less appealing after a hard days work, as does that morning run when your alarm clock goes off at 6am and it's raining. There is no magic trick to getting past these obstacles other than gritting your teeth and getting on with things. Some days exercising may seem like the last thing that you want to do, but trust me when I say that the rewards far outweigh the negatives.

the office, then I look forward to getting to the gym so that I can unwind (strange I know!). If that doesn't sound like you though why not enlist the help of a Personal Trainer, or start training with a friend so that you can bounce motivation off each other? No matter how high the hurdle there is always a way around it. And if you can't get around it, sometimes you just have to put your head down and bulldoze right through it! Healthy Regards, Ash

I've now learnt to use exercise as a way for me to release my stresses, not inflict them. So if I am in fact coming to the end of a particularly lengthy day at

MEETING RISING DEMANDS YMCAfit discuss the substantial growth in the UK fitness industry over the course of the last year and how there's never been a better time to start a new career with them in Personal Training

Whether it’s the success of the Olympic and Paralympic Games of 2012, Bradley Wiggins’ outstanding Tour de France triumph or the Wimbledon victory of Andy Murray, the buzz word that swiftly fills speeches by both politicians and governing bodies alike is that of ‘legacy’. How will the feats affect future

12

generations of sports stars? In reality much of the predicted rise in participation numbers drop off soon after the victory parade has concluded. However, whilst sporting numbers may not be reaching the levels that 2012 promised to bring, the fitness industry continues to go from strength to strength. The 2013 State of the UK Fitness Industry Report reveals that the UK health and fitness industry has grown its total market value to £3.92 billion. The 2013 report highlights that the industry has experienced improved growth in the last 12 months with increases of 2% in the number of fitness facilities and a 4.5% rise in the number of members, according to independent leisure market analysts The Leisure Database Company. This continues the steady rise which has continued despite the economic downturn. Since 2009, the fitness industry has grown its total market value by 4%, the member base by 8.3% and the number of fitness facilities by 3.9%. But if you consider that currently only 12.5% of the population hold a gym membership – this is a market which promises plenty more growth over the coming years.

CHANGING CAREERS With this continued growth, an increasing number of people are now training to become fitness professionals. Alongside the security that a growing industry offers, a career in fitness also allows many to indulge their passion. What’s more, nowadays training for a new career doesn’t have to be a full-time commitment. YMCA Fitness Industry Training (YMCAfit), the UK’s most experienced training provider of fitness qualifications, offers the chance to complete training courses as full-time or part-time options. This gives the opportunity for some to become a qualified personal trainer in just seven weeks, whilst others can fit their training around their work and gain their qualifications within a year. Danielle Linton completed her Advanced Diploma in Personal Training over a number of years. For Danielle, being able to fit her studying around a full-time job was crucial, so the modular course was perfect. “I could do all the modules at my own pace while I worked, so I gained experience at the same time,” she explains. “Now I’m qualified as well as experienced, which is a real bonus.” Recognising YMCAfit as the industry standard

BtnActive#14_Repro.indd 13

qualification, Danielle started out on the Gym Instructor course six years ago, followed that with Exercise to Music and worked her way up to the Certificate in Personal Training, which she finished in January. She’s also completed a number of continuing professional development (CPD) modules, including Suspension Fitness and Kettlebells. “You know what you’re getting with YMCAfit,” she comments. “From the first course I took I liked the way it was structured. You go in knowing what your aims are and come out having achieved them.” LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION Personal Training has proven to be the fitness industry’s most lucrative career choice and, in today’s tough economic times, it’s easy to see why. Few other professions offer such a degree of personal and professional flexibility, and even fewer are able to prosper in such a diverse range of environments, with the park, the studio, the gym and even the beach offering ideal working conditions and opportunities for good Personal Trainers. Yet other areas are thriving too. The rise of Zumba and Bokwa has once again reignited the desire for dance classes; whilst riding on the bandwagon of celebrity and sporting endorsements, www.brightonactive.com 13

05/08/2013 10:46

participation numbers in yoga and Pilates are soaring all of the time. Megan O’Neil is one such instructor embracing a broad spectrum of qualifications in order to maximise her appeal. Megan, 22, signed up with YMCAfit on the recommendation of her legs, bums and tums class instructor who had already completed the qualification. “She is such a good teacher and I knew that the training must be good.” Megan sailed through the qualification and on the day of her practical assessment she got chatting to some students on the Personal Training course. Their enthusiasm for their course “planted the seed” in Megan’s mind and she decided to follow up her ETM with an Advanced Diploma in Personal Trainer course so that she could tailor her work to her clients’ needs. “So many people were asking advice about losing weight or tackling a particular area; things that would be covered in a one-to-one session” she explains. “I thought if I qualify as a Personal Trainer then I can teach my classes and if anyone needs any advice afterwards then I can give that too.” Now, she teaches classes at one venue and works as a Personal Trainer at another. BUILDING UP TRUST Whilst success stories are reassuring and encouraging, undertaking vocational training can also be a daunting prospect. Changing career certainly wasn’t a decision that 37-year-old Sonam Bligh took lightly, but rather a necessary investment in his future. “I really did my research and I could see that YMCAfit was head and shoulders above other providers,” he says. “I’ve seen the success of friends who have followed the same route, and their achievements compounded that belief.”

I do group work outside as well. Whatever my client’s needs, I work with them to give them confidence and they trust me.” But Sonam is quick to highlight that, despite the readily available support that’s on-hand throughout the course; it requires hard work and dedication. A clear structure and consistent benchmarking lets students know what level they’re working at and helps them hone in on what they’ve yet to achieve. “You’re not spoon-fed,” he points out. “But the support is there - in person and online - when you need it.” For many, pursuing a new career seems a formidable task. But if a legacy is to be left from the sporting success that Britain has seen over the last year, it may be to follow your dream and do something that you truly want to do. The fitness industry is on the up and more and more people are choosing to follow their passion and discover that work doesn’t have to be a chore. If you’ve been thinking about making changes, it’s never been so easy. Wait no longer, your time is now!

Sonam embarked on a YMCAfit Advanced Diploma in Personal Training and completed the course last year. He now works as a Personal Trainer, mentoring people of all ages and abilities to help them reach their goals. “Some of my clients want to lose weight; some work at desks all day and just want to get moving more,” he says. “I have For more information about how you can start your some older clients who just want to get out of the house. career in fitness visit ymcafit.org.uk/active 14

PREPARATION

‘CHRISTMAS’ OK, so we are currently still on the edge of a great summer, but I know one thing that is rapidly approaching that will start to take over our thoughts soon and that’s Christmas... WORDS - Martin Petrie of MP Personal Training Yes I know it’s a dreaded word that is only whispered in some places. What always confuses me is that we crave summer fit bodies as soon as the sun comes out, but we never really seem to want to work towards having one in advance. Yet we always know that there will be at least three days of sun to enjoy or a holiday abroad. It is just the same with Christmas, we always know that we are going to put on a few pounds over the holiday period, but we never put a plan of action into place to help our bodies to actually cope with the extra pressure those few pounds place on our organs and joints. Why is that? In my experience people always say that they’ll start to get something in place, but then never get around to it, as Christmas and all its 16 ISSUE #14 AUG / SEP 2013

It is common knowledge these days that to burn off more calories on a daily basis you need to speed up your metabolic rate. For those who have been living in the dark, basically this is the rate in which your body burns through stored calories while you are at rest. It has been proven that an increase of muscle mass via toning + development will help you to do this. Of course this alone will help, but it would need matching to a nutritional program designed for you to gain the most benefits from the extra training.

GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE METABOLIC WITH SOLUTION If you’ve been a member of a commercial gym at some point in your life, you would have seen lines of cardio machines with people exercising while watching TV, using their mobile phone, reading a book, all the while making sure that they stay in their fat burning zone... WORDS - Paul Golding of Metabolic Solution But over in the corner there may have been a guy with headphones on, huffing, puffing and sweating to the point of exhaustion. He may be doing Burpees, squat jumps, Kettlebell moves, but there doesn’t seem to be any structure or reason to this maniac’s exercise method. It just looks intense, a little crazy and far different from anything you may have seen. But the most important thing to notice is that he is lean, fit and strong, a heck of a lot leaner than the guys and girls staying in their supposed fat burning zones. Well it’s time to forget the fatburning zone once and for all! The fat burning zone is actually only relevant for those of you training for

an endurance event, but for those of you who are looking to become leaner, stronger, faster and fitter, it is not the most efficient and time effective way to train. Yes it is nice to train in a nice comfortable manner and yes it can even be good for your health, but if you are like most people in this modern world, you want results and you want them now. So how do you train for fast and efficient fat loss? Well the first thing is that you have to be prepared to hurt a little, to be uncomfortable and get out of your comfort zone. At Metabolic Solution we follow four simple principles;

1. Chase the burn 2. Get out of your comfort zone 3. Lift heavy 4. Rest Today I want you to focus on getting out of your comfort zone, but what does that mean and what does it entail? Well, studies have shown that training intensity, not volume, determines the degree of metabolic boost from a given workout. Progressive overload remains the hallmark of any solid fitness routine and if you are not pushing past your comfort zone your body will stop adapting to ANY routine. So if you want to blast the fat, then it’s time to get out of your comfort zone.

ANDROULLA MCCARTHY

With the help of top local Personal Trainer Robbi Isenberg of Twisted Fitness, Androulla McCarthy has transformed herself from overweight mum into a lean, mean, fitness machine. Here's her story... Hi Drew! For little over a year now Robbi Isenberg has been whipping you into shape, but what was it like for you before then and when was it that you knew you needed to get fitter? Before I met Robbi at the start of 2012 I was in a real rut. After giving birth to my daughter eights years prior to this I never quite managed to lose the excess weight that I had put on. My diet was poor and I was doing no exercise at all. Basically, I was getting larger and larger and was experiencing serious knee pain from when I had previously tore my interior crucial ligament.

me feel comfortable in the classes I decided to work with Robbi on a one-on-one basis.

When I was told that I needed a second knee operation last year things really hit home as my surgeon told me that I was carrying too much weight. He gave me a lot of criticism which really hurt, but it was what I needed to hear. At the end of January 2012 I knew I had to do something.

To start with we opted to focus on weight loss. We started training together in May 2012 when at this time I was a full time freelance Personal Trainer training my clients at The Arches in Brighton.

What were your first steps to making a change? I started trying to exercise on my own, but quickly became frustrated at the lack of motivation and the small amount of weight I was losing. I didn't like what I was seeing in the mirror, and so began to participate in local exercise classes in hope that I would see better results. It was through these that I met Robbi, who at the time was teaching them. He introduced himself and after initially making 20

Robbi, what were your first steps to taking on Drew as a client? Robbi: I first wanted to find out about all of Drew’s history including her knee problem and previous attempts at exercising. We measured her height and weight and talked more about how her knee was causing her aggravation. I researched everything and in turn found out how to strengthen it.

How were the first few months of training with Robbi? Our goal was to bring me down from just under 14 stone to 10 stone. At first I was cautious about not hurting my knee any more than it was, but as I trained with Robbi so did my knee begin to strengthen and the pain lessen. I began to see changes in my body very quickly, even with my challenging shift work at Gatwick Airport. As well as the training Robbi also helped me understand the importance of nutrition and

made me competent in knowing what foods were good for me and what were not. He was always at the end of the phone if I needed to ask him anything, or just wanted some moral support. By the end of September I had reached my goal of weighing in at 10 stone. Why do you think that Drew lost so much weight so quickly? Robbi: The key with losing weight is to keep things consistent. Drew stuck to the plan, trusted me as a Personal Trainer and gave an unfathomable amount of effort into each and every training session we had together. She really wanted to lose the weight and she did. Once you reached your 10 stone goal what was your next ambition? My knee was starting to feel really strong and so I decided to enter the 2013 Brighton Half Marathon. Just to be sure though that it would hold up I visited the same surgeon that told me that I was carrying too much weight at the beginning of the year. He couldn't believe it was me when I walked through the door and told me that because of the strength of my knee I would not need to have surgery on it and that I was safe to run the race which I ended up successfully completing.

challenging herself. Whatever I do now compliments what the Connect crew do. It’s really great having Personal Trainers and local training facilities working together to get the best out of someone. What's next for you Drew? Next year I’m doing both the Half and Full Brighton Marathon's with Robbi. I'm still training with Robbi each week at The Arches and am trying to improve my CrossFit skills. I’ve also just been taken on by a fitness modelling agency which is a fantastic opportunity that Robbi helped me achieve. What makes Robbi different to other Personal Trainers? His dedication. He’s been there through my ups and my downs. I never thought that I would have the willpower or determination to do this, but Robbi has helped me find an inner fire. Now thanks to him I have the passion to carry on and look for even more new challenges. For more information call Robbi on 07877 242 674, email robbi@twistedfitness.co.uk or visit www.twistedfitness.co.uk

So you lost the weight and completed a Half Marathon. How did Robbi help you to continue the journey to where we are at now? Robbi has helped me find a new passion for training. His sessions are all varied and never the same and he always pushes me to my limits every time. He introduced me to CrossFit (CrossFit Connect) and I also now run regularly each week with absolutely no problems with my knee. Now with Robbi's help I'm pleased to say I actually weigh 9 stone 4lbs. Robbi: With my training and what Drew does at CrossFit, that gives her the motivation to keep www.brightonactive.com

As well as completely new equipment there will also be a new sound system and new flooring. We asked Class Coordinator Melanie Rooke what she was most excited about with the new renovation: “Everything!” Melanie said. “It’s going to be fantastic for everyone. Withdean Sports Complex has always been a friendly place to keep fit, it's what sets us apart from other training facilities in Brighton. SUPERNOVA SURFBOARDS

Supernova Surfboards is a unique Surfshop and Surfboard Heritage Centre in Newhaven Marina. Run by Craig Lindfield-Butler, Supernova Surfboards specialises in introducing people to Stand-up paddleboarding and providing quality, affordable surfing merchandise to established surfers. Craig has been designing and hand-shaping surfboards since 1989 and makes all his custom-made surfboards on site in Newhaven

Hi Craig! Tell us about the Surfboard Heritage Centre We’re the only site outside of Cornwall and Devon to hold a collection of vintage surfboards and we have a selection of really special and unique boards dating back to the 1950’s. All our boards in the Heritage Centre show how the art of surfboard design has changed over the decades. They are all designed and shaped in the UK apart from one special board which is the same make and model as the board that Rolf Arness surfed when he won the World Championships in 1970, so we’re very proud of our Bing Maui foil. Why are your custom-made boards so unique? I have surfed in this area all my life and most boards that you buy ‘off the shelf’ are no good for the surf locally. I design boards that will empower the surfer to ride the waves in a way they never thought they could. My designs are simple yet innovative and I’m always coming up with ways to shape the boards that bring more to the surfing experience.

What else do you offer at the shop? “We offer SUP try-outs in the lagoon behind the shop which is a calm, safe area for people to learn the basics of Stand-up Paddleboarding. It’s a sport that is growing massively in this country and it can be done on the sea, rivers, lakes and lagoons,

storage space. I also offer a board repair service with free local pick up – I can repair all types of boards from small dings upwards. We sell wetsuits, and surfwear, as well as different types of Surfboards and SUP’s, paddles, leashes, board bags – pretty much everything you need for surfing or paddleboarding!”

plus it’s easy to pick up, so anyone can do it. We sell inflatable SUP’s which are proving really popular as they pack into a bag that fits into cars easily and they inflate in under 5 minutes, so we’re selling quite a few to people who want to travel with their SUP, as well as those who don’t have a lot of
