XMAS SPECIAL Well we’ve almost arrived to the end of 2013 and will soon be saying ‘Welcome’ to the start of the New Year. Event in London We would like to extend a ‘Thank You’ to the massive support we received for our London launch of VemmaUK on Saturday 30th November, which took place in central London. It was a great day and our next event is planned for end of February 2014.

Products 2013 saw the launch of the Bode Shake, Verve Bold and the fantastic iced-tea drink, Verve Partea to add to the Vemma, Verve and Thirst products. editor’s n ote editor note 2013 ended with a bang and we could not be happier with the growth of some of the familiar faces that have featured within the pages of Brighton Active Magazine. In November our friends at CrossFit Connect moved a stones throw from their then current CrossFit box into a huge 5200 square foot facility next to Hove Lagoon. I've had the pleasure of training with the Connect crew since their launch in March 2011 (when they featured in Issue 02 of Brighton Active) and with their help I have seen some amazing increases in strength and stamina thanks to careful programming and speciality classes.

In December the Freedom Leisure Withdean Sports Complex completed its 2.7 million renovation with the Mayor of Brighton & Hove in attendance declaring the new facility officially open. Their gym is now quite possibly the most state-of-the-art gym in Brighton & Hove housing the awesome Synrgy360 multi-purpose workout station, 4 lifting platforms and power racks, a huge range of pin and plate loaded machines and the very impressive My Ride virtual cycling experience (both in its own studio and also connected to individual bikes on the gym floor). Just North of Brighton, the Warrior Run obstacle and endurance event (taking place at Qleisure) brought the local fitness community together not once but twice in April and October. For the two events planned 6

in 2014 we have been promised more mud, more obstacles and more fun! I have found it a joy to speak to all of these people and hear their stories of achievement and expansion. Many others who also feature within the magazine have seen growth with new and exciting classes, regular discounts and special offers, and more of an emphasis on social media to keep people updated with news and events. All this has come together to lay a path in 2014 that I believe will see a further surge in the local health and fitness sector. With so much now available to people on their doorstep Brighton & Hove is the place to be to get active in the UK! For myself 2014 opens yet more challenges and goals, not least because this year I turn 30. I said to myself shortly after turning 29 that I wanted to be in the best shape of my life when I hit the big 3-0, starting things as I mean for them to go on. For the next few months then I will be spending more time keeping active than ever before, and with the choice of activities available to me locally I am confident that I will be successful. Whatever your goals for 2014 I wish you the very best of luck. Perhaps you plan to run the Brighton Half Marathon, or even the full one? Perhaps you will be joining me on the Warrior Run events? Or perhaps you plan to take up a new sport or join a local gym? Regardless of what you do make each and every day count and live your life to the fullest to make 2014 your best year yet. SETTING YOUR SIGHTS ON 2014 I’d like to start by welcoming you all to your party season. Where all the good intentions go out the window and bad habits kick back in... Although it’s part of the reason why some of us have been working hard in the gym, training at home or even out pounding the streets running since the end of summer. For those of us in the know we are well aware that by speeding up our metabolisms (via increasing our muscle mass and calorie burning potential) we can almost cancel out the excesses from the Christmas habitual grazing.

PLAY HARD Centre stage in the Withdean gym is Synrgy360, combining several popular functional, dynamic exercises into one system. It can be used by individuals, pairs or small groups but Synrgy360 really comes alive during classes as disco music and lights kick in to raise the tempo and energy. The class covers the entire Synrgy360 system - think circuits in a very grown up playground with TRX, medicine balls, plyometrics, cable machines, monkey bars, kettlebells, body harnesses, battle ropes, punch bags and a lot more besides. In this high intensity training session thirty second intervals never felt so tough – or so good.

RIDE FAST If you like indoor cycling, you’ll LOVE the forward motion, video-enabled MyRide+ programme. The purpose-built MyRide Studio at Withdean Sports Complex features 22 matrix tomahawk bikes and the MyRide+ system which consists of a console linked up to an HD projector producing a giant 4mx 2.2m screen. As you ride, you’re immersed in stunning footage of roads and off-road trails in locations across the world from the California coast to the Yellowstone National Park to the Swiss Alps. CLIMB HIGH Enjoy some of the best indoor climbing in the area with the brand new 13m indoor climbing wall, opening in January at Withdean Sports Complex. The venue is set to become a regional centre of excellence for this increasingly popular sport. The wall has two auto-belay lines as well as a dedicated area for lower level ‘bouldering.’ Climbing routes range from 4+, a grade suitable for young children and beginners, right up to the competition standard 8a, which will provide a challenge for even the most experienced climbers. ‘Have a go’ sessions and beginner courses will help kids and adults reach new heights. Half Marathon challenge

A lot of the runners that you see pounding the streets of Brighton & Hove and counting down the miles along the seafront at this time of the year are training for the Brighton Half Marathon... Taking place on Sunday 16th February 2014, the Brighton Half Marathon is in its 24th year and has become increasingly popular over the last few years. The 2014 race sold out in record time with entry closed by the end of June but charity places are still available if you want to take part, just go to www.brightonhalfmarathon.com/ charities for further details. After picking up the award for ‘Most Improved Race’ at the Runner’s World Personal Best Awards 2013, the Brighton Half Marathon is going from strength to strength and will see 11,000 runners taking to the streets of Brighton & Hove in February. The first major half marathon in the new year, the Brighton Half Marathon is the perfect training ground for all spring marathons and attracts a mix of first time half marathon runners,

club runners, personal-best chasers and charity runners. Charity fundraising is a key part of the Brighton Half Marathon, with runners being encouraged to raise money for one of the official charities. The event is organised by and the main fundraising event for The Sussex Beacon, a care centre in Brighton supporting men, women and families affected by HIV. There are some charity places left for runners to be part of ‘Team Beacon’, just go to the website and register to run for The Sussex Beacon. Other Charity Partners include Scope (National Charity Partner) alongside WaterAid (International Charity Partner) and Rise (Local Charity Partner). A list of further associated charities can be found on the charity page of

the website. Event Manager Paul Bond comments: “The Brighton Half Marathon is now more popular than ever, with a beautiful route mostly along the seafront, an iconic city location and a great atmosphere.
