editor’s n ote editor note Recently someone close to me asked me how I manage to stay continuously motivated to go to the gym each week, to play sport and to eat well. My answer was simple: I set myself short-term goals that are easily achievable and which keep me motivated. For example in the gym I set myself 4, 6 or 8 week long targets to attempt to reach. If I don't make them, it's no big deal. I just set myself a new target. Playing a sport I try and do once a week. I class swimming as a sport, so I may do this. Or recently I played Frisbee in the park. Not a traditional sport you might say, but to me it counts. And to eat well I buy good food in bulk so that I never run out and I look forward to the odd treat each weekend to keep me sane. I also use holidays, camping trips, even meals out to help motivate me to keep things up. And if all else fails I know that some friends of mine will be on my case if I let things slip (Frisbee is after all no fun with just one person!)
These small steps as I think of them soon add up, and before you know it a whole year has gone by. I'll be the first to admit that I am well into the routine of thinking this way and that it may be hard for others to jump straight into things. My advice is to start small. You want to start going to the gym? Start by targeting one or two trips per week and build on things from there. You want to play a sport? Go with a friend and help motivate each other. You want to eat better? Plan your weekly meals in advance so you're not caught out. Small and simple steps will soon lead to big and impressive results. Healthy Regards, Ash

MP PT TACKLES THE BHF LONDON 2 BRIGHTON (AGAIN!) Once again this June, Martin Petrie of MP Personal Training will be taking on the London to Brighton Bike Ride in aid of the British Heart Foundation, but there is a twist. As this time he will be joined in fancy dress by his son Joshua. But first I asked him to mention what has been happening with MP Personal Training... Hi everyone, hope you’re all OK. We have been lucky enough to have created new links with EDF Energy, for which we will be taking part in their next Healthy Eating and Exercise Campaign in June. This is all before I even get to the expansion of our very popular over 60’s training group Forever Fit. As of last month we are pleased to have launched a second location, this time in central Hove.
