editor’s n ote editor note At the time of writing I have just completed October's Warrior Run obstacle event on what is a surprisingly sunny and warm Sunday afternoon. Starting the race wearing a bright blue t-shirt with my hair tied up so as not to get in my eyes, I ended up finishing the run with my t-shirt a dull brown colour covered in mud and my hair sprawled across my face in dire need of a good shampoo. Not a typical Sunday by any means, but then neither was it for the other 500+ competitors!
said for many of Brighton's other popular events such as the Brighton Half Marathon which I completed in 2012. Having that target to get my body and my mind prepared helped me endlessly with making sure that I dedicated a sufficient amount of time training in the build up to the run. Sometimes that's what you need: an end goal. Something to set your sights towards and something to warrant every bit of training that you do. Not only can training towards an end goal give you purpose this winter, it can make things easier for you when the final challenges present themselves. Not a fan of venturing outdoors in the winter? Neither am I in all honesty, but your body will thank you for it when you come face to face with Warrior Run's 'Growlers Mound' or the last couple of miles in the Brighton Half Marathon.
Events like Warrior Run are fresh and inspiring, offering something slightly different and edgy to the local fitness scene. I mentioned earlier in the year after the first Warrior Run in April that this would be the event to watch out for, and judging on how the first two runs have gone and the feedback that I have heard from people I may be right. I've already heard that plans are well under way for next year's events and that the ante will be upped with even more mud and more fun. I don't know about you, but you can count me in! Warrior Run was without doubt great fun in the moment, but it was also great as a target for setting my sights towards, making sure that I would be physically up for the challenge. The same could be 6

The one tip I would give is to start slow and build yourself up. Saying to yourself that you will go running every day each week can sometimes only help in setting yourself up for failure. So starting with a more achievable two or three runs a week, and then increasing these once you're comfortable is a much more effective way of making sure you stay strong. And if you feel you need an extra kick then be sure to utilise the experts within this very magazine. Tell them your goals and they will help guide you and make sure that when the final challenge presents itself, your body and mind will be more than ready. Healthy Regards, Ash

DARK NIGHTS ARE UPON US It is that time of the year again... There is not one day that passes lately when I don’t see a countdown of some kind on Facebook. Yes Christmas is rapidly approaching us, yet for quite a few people there is a major barrier standing in the way of their party ready bodies. You may not have guessed this, but I’m talking about the arrival of the early dark evenings. We have been so lucky with the weather over the summer that it makes its arrival so much harder to deal with. From the feedback that I’ve received of late, the reason behind this barrier is the fact that people just want to go home and curl up on the sofa. Most have done with work for the day and instead of being spurred on by the bright motivational evenings, it’s far more appealing for people to head straight home. So why not look at this issue from a different angle? This month is Stoptober, where lots of people all over the country are making changes for the better. Now is the

time to gather your friends and family together and try something new! Draw your motivation from each other, whether it be trying out a new studio class or in fact joining a gym together. There really is no reason to wait until after Christmas or even the New Year. This issue we interview David Draper, joint owner of Hove's Reebok CrossFit Connect, and learn more about how he discovered CrossFit and why it is so popular Hi Dave! How did you first get involved with CrossFit and why did it appeal to you? As a personal trainer I had always been a fan of the big power lifts (squats, deadlifts, presses etc) rather than machines, as well as gymnastics. In 2009 when visiting friends in Bath, they recommended that I try a new CrossFit gym in the area and as soon as I walked in I knew that it was exactly the sort of place I wanted to train. Full of toys such as barbells, ropes, lifting platforms, gymnastic rings and pull ups bars. It was so alien to the sterile gym environment I had been used too. Over the next year I did my CrossFit trainers course, my first Olympic weightlifting course and immersed myself in the CrossFit world. I was convinced that the 3 elements of weightlifting, gymnastics and interval training programmed into measurable workouts and strength sessions was a great way to illicit an amazing level of fitness. How do you think CrossFit has grown since you opened Connect in March 2011? When we opened Connect there were only about 60 other boxes in the UK and it was still unknown to the mass fitness market. Today we are approaching 200 boxes around the country, 7000 worldwide and CrossFit is featured almost every month in the main fitness 14

magazines. What started as an almost counter-culture, grassroots movement has become the biggest fitness trend in the world. It really can transform peoples lives! I know that sounds a bit clichéd but we have seen it ourselves over the last three years. It’s the community aspect of a box that is another massively important factor. You bond over the workouts, you cheer people on as they break new records and set new personal bests, and you socialise with people from a diverse range of backgrounds. You don’t get this at a regular gym and it’s a very big reason that people stick with it. With your second box now open just a few doors down from the original Connect box, how are you finding the influx of new members wanting to try CrossFit?
With the second unit now open it has allowed us to really expand our class timetable. We keep our classes small at 12 people to ensure that we can still coach each individual to a high level but now we have two units we can offer more things. We have over 45 classes a week now at Connect as well as Open Gym times for individual practice. We are open from 6.30am weekdays and close at 9:00pm, and are open both mornings on the weekend too. CrossFit is the talk of the fitness world at the moment. Why do you think that is and do you see things continuing this way? I think there are 3 reasons why CrossFit has exploded as much as it has: 1) It works! Quite simply, given time and dedication CrossFit will get you into the best shape of your life. 2) The community. I have never met a friendlier, more encouraging and more knowledgeable group of people. 3) Reebok and marketing. Some people considered CrossFit's relationship with Reebok to be ‘selling out’, but I believe it has helped raise its profile to the mass market. At Connect we will continue to provide great coaching, a fun and friendly environment in which to train and we thrive on helping educate people on staying healthy by eating the right foods. The way the box has grown since we opened has been a dream come true and we have many exciting plans for the future.
SO WHAT IS IT WE DO AT CONNECT? Olympic Weightlifting There is no better way to hone a multitude of skills than to start learning the two Olympic lifts; the Clean & Jerk and Snatch. Speed, power, explosiveness, flexibility, balance, co-ordination, agility and timing are all needed in abundance. Sounds better than sitting on a leg curl machine doesn’t it. They may be hard to master but anyone can start to learn these lifts at our specific Olympic Weightlifting classes run by Masters World Champ Holly G. Power Lifting The standard Barbell lifts such as the Deadlift, Back Squat, Front Squat, Press, Push Press and Bench press are all taught by qualified UK Strength & Conditioning coaches. We probably have the most qualified set of coaches at any gym in Brighton & Hove. Even if you have been doing these lifts for a while the chances are you will pick up some tips on how to make your lifts better and more efficient. Gymnastics Bodyweight training has become popular lately through YouTube videos of guys doing crazy acrobatic moves in various parks and gyms around the world. Learn how to progress your pull ups, press ups, handstands, muscle ups, Olympic ring work, front and back levers and other bodyweight movements. Start with the simple moves and move up the progressions with our skill focuses and gymnastics class on a Saturday morning. Interval Training (Metabolic Conditioning) We also throw sprinting, rowing, box jumps, skipping and burpees into the mix to hit your cardio system hard and present a stimulus for your heart and lungs to adapt and get stronger. Our CrossFit classes are a mix of these four elements and every class is completely scalable to the individual. By programming your workouts across a 6-8 week period, far from being random, your coaches devise the sessions to maximise your adaptive response to your training. There is no standing still. Improvements will come rapidly and you will see gains long after regular programmes have stopped producing results. Be prepared for the unknown and the unknowable and be ready for anything life throws at you.
