High school students and members of the community gathered at Memorial Park May 3 in "a strike for climate action" organized by Grade 12 East Northumberland Secondary School student Sophie Price. She says it's time Brighton joined other communities in declaring a "climate emergency." See page 18.
COUNCIL ASKED TO FORM ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE JOHN CAMPBELL jcampbell@metroland.com Brighton - Jeff Wheeldon, the Green party candidate for the local riding in this year's federal election, has suggested Brighton form an environmental advisory committee. "The world is in rough shape," he told council Monday, noting a
study reported in the news earlier in the day warned that more than a million species are near extinction. "The problem is us," he said. "We can stop it if we take action." Wheeldon pointed out there have been "increases in catastrophic weather events ... around the world" that have resulted in huge losses of life and
billions of dollars in property damage. Military experts "recognize climate change is the greatest threat in the world," he said. Wheeldon told council there's "a lack of leadership" in Ontario when it comes to environmental issues, with funding cuts being made to conservation authorities and other bodies that assist mu-
nicipalities in maintaining "the integrity of our environment." Municipalities "can lead the way" on this front and many have across Canada by declaring states of climate emergency. He said the environment shouldn't be treated as a single issue but "addressed as a matter of See COMMITTEE, page 2

course on every issue." But Brighton hasn't any body to "draw attention to potential environmental issues" and provide council with feedback and recommendations. As a Green party candidate and local resident, he's often approached by people about the environment in Brighton and while he's "quite happy" to offer them direction and support, "it would be far better for council" to have a committee that deals with their concerns. It could be of "tremendous help to council" and "a great service to the municipality," Wheeldon said. Council members showed interest in his pro-
posal, voicing their own concerns about what they see is happening in the world. "I can't remember the last time I saw a frog," said Coun. Mary Tadman. who recalled catching frogs as a child. Bullfrogs are seldom heard anymore in the marsh at Gosport where she lives. "There used to be frogs everywhere," she said, and the same with dew worms, "but they're not there anymore." "Something is really wrong with the environment," Tadman said. "We need to do something about it." "Frogs are now the canaries (in the mines)," signalling lives are in danger
because of contamination in the environment, Coun. Doug LeBlanc said. Green energy projects also pose a risk, he added. Wind turbines kill birds and solar panels increase the temperature in their immediate area. Wheeldon said turbines and panels, if "done without oversight ... can actually in some ways make problems worse rather than better. So we need to proceed in a responsible way which is why it's good to have people who are ... double-checking these kinds of things for their impact." Council voted to have staff prepare a report on Wheeldon's suggestion and make a recommendation.

BRIGHTON "WELL-PREPARED" TO HANDLE FLOOD THREAT JOHN CAMPBELL jcampbell@metroland.com Brighton - "We're planning for the worst and we're hoping for the best." It's a credo director of public works and infrastructure Preston Parkinson has adopted to prevent a repeat of the flooding that took place two years ago when things got pretty bad for residents living along Lake Ontario. "We're well-prepared to react to whatever comes at us," he said. "We're on top of things. We're out ahead of it this time rather than responding." Public works employees and student workers spent Thursday building a small wall of sandbags along Bay Street in Gosport. "If we get any wind from the south there's going to be waves on the road," Parkinson said. "We're trying to avoid all the water getting pushed over to the people across the street." He estimated 1,000 bags would be used to build the wall. "We received numerous calls from people just inquiring about our preparedness level and what are we going to do to help," he said. The municipality issued a news release May 1 saying the public works department had modified its plow trucks "to enable on-site sandbag filling on a priority basis. This level of ser-

erty. The locations are Shoal Point Road, the boat ramps at Gosport and Ontario Street, 67 Sharp Rd., and Greenway Circle. Anyone requiring assistance can call the public works department at 613-475-1162 during regular business hours, or 613-967-8707 after hours. Parkinson said he or operations supervisor Gord Fletcher would visit each scene to evaluate the situation and assign a priority level. "We'll respond as we can," he said. Fire Chief Rick Caddick said his department has been monitoring the levels "at least twice daily, sometimes more" in areas "that potentially could be hit first" along the lakeshore. "We've been reaching out to some individuals that we know are potentially at risk to ensure that they're aware (what the situation is)," Caddick said. "Most of them have been through this before so they know what to expect." "We learned a lot of lessons (in 2017)," Caddick said. Brighton now is "well ahead of the curve (and has) a good amount of resources ready to go." Former council member John Martinello said in an email he had "received a number of phone calls from residents concerned about potential flooding ... (who) fear a repeat of the flooding of 2017" because of what they see happening in Bracebridge, Ottawa and Montreal.
Today
John Campbell/Torstar Jon Hay fills a bag of sand in just seconds using a method that was devised by a fellow public works department employee, Murney Gibson. Martinello said "the numbers don't look good," citing reports that Lake Ontario rose one foot in just 19 days in April and the United States Army Corps of Engineers forecasting it will rise another 11 inches in the next 30 days. Lower Trent Conservation said the flood watch it issued for Lake Ontario on April 26 would remain valid until May 10. A flood watch is triggered when there is potential for flooding to occur in low-lying areas. It said nuisance or minor flooding of access roads, backyards, basements, and elsewhere is anticipated but neither people nor buildings were at risk. Anyone wishing to help with sandbagging can call 613-475-1744 or visit bfd@brighton.ca for further information.
STORY BEHIND THE STORY:
For many residents in Brighton, the floods of 2017 are still fresh in their minds. With the lake water levels continuing to creep up again this spring and a flood watch issued by the conservation authority, John Campbell takes a look at the lessons learned from 2 years ago and how they are being used to avoid a repeat scenario.
3.5 cups all purpose flour • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature 1 cup + 2 tbsp white sugar • 2 large eggs • .5 tsp salt • 2 tsp vanilla extract (optional: lemon zest is wonderful too!) Cream butter and sugar (make sure they are at room temperature) in your mixing bowl (with the paddle attachment if using a large mixer) until light and fluffy, don’t scrimp on this step, spend the time for better cookies. Add eggs one at a time, mixing each well. When both eggs have been added, continue mixing on medium for about two minutes. Add vanilla (and/or lemon zest if using), then flour and salt, mix just until incorporated. Bring dough together and separate into 2 batches, wrap each in plastic wrap for at least 1-2 hours in the refrigerator. Once chilled, roll to ¼” thick (be careful not to roll too thin, and use corn starch for rolling, it works much better than flour) Cut to desired shape, place on parchment paper and bake at 350 for 8 to 10 minutes. Enjoy as is or ice with royal icing.

CODRINGTON: A SMALL VILLAGE WITH BIG IDEAS COMMUNITY CENTRE HOME TO MANY POPULAR EVENTS, ALICIA VANDINE REPORTS
northumberlandnews.com
ALICIA VANDINE Column
To those of us who travel north regularly on County Road 30 into Trent Hills, we know about the small village of Codrington and how it is centred around the activities held at the Codrington Community Centre. The centre was built in 1982; the building is owned by the Municipality of Brighton but managed by the Codrington Community Association. It houses community breakfasts, suppers, drop-in events, seniors' gatherings, workshops, music nights, line dancing, yoga and Women's Institute meetings. It is also the location of the farmers' market which is open every Sunday from May until October. This market was established by a core group of volunteers who answered the plea from locals to have a place to purchase fresh local produce, flowers, honey and baked goods. At the height of its season you can also find local beef, chicken, pork, lamb, goat, rabbit, hard cider, handmade soap, annual and perennial plants, vegetable seedlings, garlic and artisan crafts. This market has proven that if you provide it, people will come, with a busy opening day on May 5. I would encourage you to
take a road trip to see it for yourself. Recently, the air there was full of the smell of trout on the barbecue as the association held its sold-out annual fundraising dinner. Events like these are run entirely with volunteers, and all the proceeds help support the upkeep and maintenance of the centre. As the Codrington sign promises, it's a small village with big ideas. New this year, the centre is hosting the Canadian Military Wives Choir from Trenton on Saturday, June 15 from 7-9 p.m. This choir that performs a variety of music including recent pop songs, has performed at a variety of venues such as the Invictus Games, Roy Thompson Hall, Trenton Legion, and local churches. It can now add Codrington Community Centre to its list of credits. Tickets are $10 each and $5 for children under 12. For those lucky enough to attend, refreshments will be provided, and there will also be a dessert auction too. The Codrington Community Association is great example of how local volunteers bring their energy and ideas to support their local centre so that it can continue to be the hub of their community. If you are looking for a volunteering opportunity, consider the Codrington Community Association. If you contact Liana Palmer by email at lianapalmer@xplornet.com, she would be happy to share ways for you to get involved or hear about your event ideas. LETTERS & COMMENTARY READER QUESTIONS RAILWAY SAFETY STATEMENT Dear Editor: Re: CN changes practice when preparing to do maintenance work on rails (April 8 online). If safety is a core value for CN, as stated by senior media relations and public affairs adviser Alexandre Boulé in the story, one must question why the railway's engineering department would not recognize placing materials between the rails in advance of maintenance work in a high speed corridor is an unsafe practice. Where were Transport Canada's safety inspectors while this obviously unsafe practice was going on? History has proven that vandals and track materials do not mix. One incident occurred east of Brighton on Feb. 2. Another occurred on March 20, under similar circumstances, when a
VIA passenger train proceeding westward at 70 miles per hour, struck track materials between the rails near Truro, N.S., crippling the train and requiring passengers to be evacuated. Railways have been allowed the privilege of managing their own safety conduct on a monitored basis. This may partially explain Boulé's assertion, "Safety is a core value at CN. Nothing is more important than safeguarding our employees, our neighbouring communities, and the environment at all times." The fact that placing track materials between the rails is an established and recently confirmed unsafe engineering practice
is contrary to safety being a core value. When asked about the worker who had been injured near Brighton, Boulé declined, saying, "We do not comment on personal matters." I would question the railway's stated core values and reference to an injured employee as being a "personal matter."

WINNING IS SWEET: SO IS CELEBRATION FOR LOCAL BAKERY JOHN CAMPBELL jcampbell@metroland.com Campbellford - Ah, the sweet taste of victory which Dooher's Bakery was only too glad to share with its customers last Saturday in savouring being voted Canada's Sweetest Bakery. "It was an incredible honour, particularly given the number of bakeries across Canada that were also nominated," owner Cory Dooher told a throng of people gathered in front of her business, which gave out free doughnuts and hotdogs from late morning to mid-afternoon as part of its celebration. Winning the contest, sponsored by Dawn Food Products Inc., was "amazing" and a day she'll never forget, she said. "I feel humble but at the same time I feel incredibly proud." She thanked the many people who voted for the bakery, and Alannah Haig who worked tirelessly to solicit their support. Haig handles marketing and advertising for the business. Dooher also paid trib-
ute to her employees, many of them students, who have contributed so much to the bakery's success. "This award is as much for them as it is for me," she said. Dooher grew emotional talking about her grandparents, Harry and Muriel Dooher, who started the family business 70 years ago in Madoc, and her "very special" parents, Peter and Christine, who "have never left my side" when she was feeling overwhelmed. Their "words of encouragement to reach for the stars" and to believe in herself, along with their "endless love and support," has made her who she is today. She ended her remarks by saying how proud she is of her three children Jeremy, Hannah and Spencer - who have

Campbellford in 1956. It relocated to where it is now in 1977. The store has a policy of hiring high school and college students, MC Julie Brahaney having been one of them. "We all felt part of the Dooher's extended family and we all have fond memories of our time here," she said. Peter Dooher congratulated Cory and her staff for the "tremendous job
they've done" and thanked the community for the support it has given the bakery over the years. Trent Hills Mayor Bob Crate said Dooher's has helped make Campbellford a destination for outof-town visitors. Eva Allaire, vice-president of the Campbellford BIA, said the town is "so fortunate" to have Dooher's as a draw. Phil Robinson, vicepresident of operations for Dawn, said winning the company's contest was "a major accomplishment" for Dooher's - "fantastic quality people" who make "fantastic quality products. The bakery made a record number of doughnuts for the occasion, 5,400, and served 2,000
hotdogs. The celebration continued Saturday night with a dance at the arena, with all proceeds from the sale of raffle tickets going toward the purchase of IV pumps for the hospital. Gary Wilson, a longtime patron of Dooher's, said its pastries and baked goods always taste good and are always fresh. "I go in there I know I'm going to come out with an armful," he said. "All the doughnuts are great, the pies are fantastic."

OPINION
BRIGHTON'S OWN: IT'S ALL ABOUT GIVING BACK COMMUNITY SUPPORT THE FOCUS FOR HARRY'S HOTS, VIC SCHUKOV REPORTS VIC SCHUKOV Column
In 1966, Kathy McCormick came to Brighton when her Dad Harry, an OPP officer at the time, was transferred from Cobourg. Fifteen years ago, her brother paid tribute to "Pop" by naming his business after him: Harry's Hots, a well-travelled mobile food cart that caters family affairs like birthday parties and company functions. Kathy and George (born in Consecon) took over in 2014 and turned it into a marvellous fundraiser on wheels. They started four years ago, collecting $1,100 for the cenotaph. A year later, they raised $600 for the fire department's new equipment: "We pick something every year to focus on," said Kathy. "We put a percentage of what we make into a donation jar. Two years ago, we were speaking with a bunch of kids on skateboards outside Mac's convenience store. They talked about how they approached council in 2009 to upgrade the skateboard park located in King Ed-
ward Park. So, we went down to see how many kids were using it, and it was quite a bit." The couple decided to take on the formidable project. "Once we got started, more and more people came to us, saying they were taking their kids to out-of- town parks like Trenton and Campbellford. It didn't seem right to us, so we decided to get involved. Built originally in 2004, it is a little behind other similar parks. We are fundraising to extend the skateboarding park by 50%. It is presently not accessible to bicycles and scooters for the young, something we want to upgrade." Tania Light formed a skateboard committee (also the chair) which is partnering with the Lions Club and the Municipality of Brighton. The committee set a goal of $250,000 and has raised $82,000 so far. George said, "We set up at places like the curling club and Trinity Church yard sales, and school events, to name a few. When we set up for the church yard sale and school events, we are fundraising for them. On June 2 we will be back outside the

Namesake Harry happily helps out at the events: "Just going around and meeting people, I love that." It's all about giving back in a big family way. George: "When I was sick a few years back, there
things. It was amazing to me how many people stepped up to help. You just have to, in this day and age.

were people around who helped us out, and now we want to give back. I think the kids here in town need something other than what they have. There are so many things that need funding, and they don't get it. Every little bit helps. We try and target the causes that will not get the big money. We are on this until it is completed. "There has been an RFP put out for the design. Council approved us going forward for a Trillium grant. If that works out, the shovel can be in the ground next year. That's pretty good. Campbellford Park took five years." Keep Harry's Hots - located in the heart of Codrington - in mind for all of your events. They are not just seasonal, but also do catering. ("Yes folks, we work year round!") Send them an inquiry at https://www.harryshots.ca/ and they will do what they can to make it work. (And remember: A percentage goes to the park project.) COMMUNITY
PICKLEBALL: A GAME FOR ALL GROWS IN BRIGHTON ALICIA VANDINE aliciavandine@gmail.com The Pickleball Club, which started in Brighton at the abandoned tennis court in Gosport, is expanding to three courts created in the arena space at the King Edward Park Community Centre. "We are so pleased to come to a new agreement with the municipality to move our courts inside and to be able to expand our capacity," said John Seawright, Pickleball Club member. "It's a great way to utilize this space during the off-season after the ice goes out. The municipality will be painting court lines on the floor for us and they are providing two new nets for us to use." According to Pickleball Canada, the sport was invented in Washington State. It is named in honour of the inventor's dog, Pickles, and is in the midst of a global surge.
It's a game for all and Canada is home to an estimated 60,000 pickleball players. Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. Two or four players use solid paddles to hit a perforated polymer ball, called a whiffle ball, over a net. "It is not just a sport for seniors," said Pickleball Club member Laura Quirke. "It's a game of strategy, not strength, and is a great way to get active or stay active. It's fast moving and you will get addicted to playing it." The season began May 1 in this new location and will run Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Tuesdays from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. You can join the Brighton Pickleball Club by paying a $25 membership for the season and then $1 per three-

DRAGON BOAT CLUB OFFERING FREE SESSIONS FOR 2 WEEKS JOHN CAMPBELL jcampbell@metroland.com Brighton - The Brighton Dragon Boat Club is looking for new members and it really wants people to give the sport a try. For the first two weeks of the season, which begins May 13, nonmembers will be able to experience for free what it's like to be out on the water paddling. "You can try as many sessions as you like before you commit (to being a member), to make sure it's the right thing for you," head coach Tricia Boehme said. Nonmembers will be provided paddles and life-jackets, and they will be coached through a session. It's a good workout, Boehme said, but "our number 1 goal is to have fun." Novices needn't feel "intimidated," she said. "We make everyone feel comfortable." Boehme said Brighton is unique in the number of ses-

sions it holds - every morning except Monday at 6, 8 and 9 a.m., and two more for members of the race team Monday and Thursday nights at 6:30 p.m. The club, which started in 2007, had about 60 members before a recent open house. Two dozen of them are on the race team. "Our hope is to get it up to 30," Boehme said. The cost is $160 for the recreational program, $270 to be a member of the race team. "We want more men," Boehme said; roughly 70 per cent of the membership is female. The youngest member is male, at 22 years of age, and the oldest is a 80-year-old woman.
"We teach people how to paddle properly," Boehme said. It doesn't take long to figure out the basic stroke "sufficiently" to have "a good time" but "you're always learning." "Dragon boating is a great way to get in shape, because you use every muscle in your body." You also get to meet people and develop friendships, and be outdoors enjoying nature, she added. "It's got so many pluses." "The only time we don't go out or cancel a session is if we've got white caps or lightning, but if it's lightly raining, we go out." This fourth generation business was recently awarded Business of the Year in Brighton by the Brighton-Cramahe Chamber of Commerce. Current owner, George Hamilton, started working in the store in 1984 after he and his wife decided to move back from Toronto to raise their family here in their hometown. He purchased the store from his wife's father in 1988. "The company began in Smithfield," said George Hamilton. "We moved to our current location on Ontario Street in 1977." His son, Mitch Hamilton, is the fourth generation to work in Cole's Timber Mart. Cole's Timber Mart is a retail operation and is a one-stop shop for professional contractors and do-it-yourself home renovators, stocking items like paint, electrical and plumbing supplies. The business also has a large lumber yard. "Our diverse inventory can outfit anyone's material lists for their construction products," said Mitch Hamilton. RESIDENTS SHOW UP FOR CANADA'S 'CLIMATE REBELLION' JOHN CAMPBELL jcampbell@metroland.com Brighton - High school students and members of the community gathered at Memorial Park May 3 in "a strike for climate action" organized by a Grade 12 East Northumberland Secondary School student. "Welcome to Canada's climate rebellion," Sophie Price greeted the 40 who turned out for the one-hour event held before noon, saying thousands of Canadians elsewhere were gathering
that same day across the country to demand governments take action to halt the pernicious effects of climate change caused by human activity. "We are being silently killed but I am telling you now we won't go down without a fight," said Price, a 17year-old who was inspired to do something by another teenager, Greta Thunberg, who launched a global movement of environmental protests when she staged a school strike outside the Swedish parlia-

ment building last summer. "We can't ignore our problems forever or they will never be solved," said Price, who worries that it could be too late, that even "if the whole world works toward saving the planet it still might not be possible." "We are in a climate crisis," she said, and a catastrophe is looming, "with the lives of hundreds of millions of people" at risk. Councils around the world have declared a "climate emergency," including those in Kingston and Ottawa, and it's time for Brighton to join them, Price said. Canada is "warming at twice the global rate" and "the ground is literally collapsing below the feet of Indigenous people in the North due to permafrost melt," she said. Faye McFarlane, a member of Blue Dot Northumberland, said the environmental group is "very supportive of the students' strike on climate change" because her generation "left this mess for them, and for that I apologize. I will be apologizing probably for the rest of my life." Blue Dot is asking each of the local candidates in this year's federal election to pledge that environmental rights - clean air and water, healthy soil and safe food - will be part of their party's platform. MP Kim Rudd and Green party candidate Jeff Wheeldon have made that pledge thus far. McFarlane said 150 nations recognize the right of
their citizens to a healthy environment but Canada provides no such legislative protection. "That is an outrage," she said. "We have to pursue that relentlessly until we get that." Des Rodrigues, a union activist for 40 years, said Massachusetts introduced "a really strong environmental act" that reduced its emissions by 68 per cent in one year, "so it's possible to do things" without business being "impeded."
PAY REFUNDS ON PLASTIC BOTTLE RETURNS Abby McDougall, a Grade 12 student at ENSS, has begun a petition calling for a refund to be paid for the return of plastic bottles. Most other provinces offer such an incentive, she said.
Such a program would reduce the number of bottles that get rejected by recyclers when they get mixed in with materials that have been contaminated by organic waste, she said. "It wouldn't be difficult to implement either and it would massively cut back on plastic waste in landfills." McDougall has collected more than 250 signatures in support of her initiative. Her goal is 1,000 names before asking Queen's Park to act on her request.
