it ain’t broke We had to give it another look, didn’t we? A year on from Broken Brighton and life is looking a lot better on a local level. Sure, the whole country is falling apart – politicians, newspapers, the police, the banks, all doing their very best to destroy themselves and those around them – but in Brighton we’re pretty much sorted. Great venues, amazing bands and people trying to do interesting things on very little money. It’s enough to make you forget that climate change has pretty much buggered up another summer. We’re all smiling anyway. So what do we want to be saying this time next year? Well, we’d like to report that not a single venue had been closed for noise complaints. We don’t think that’s unreasonable. We’d also like to see the slowing down of supermarkets forcing out corner shops. Unless people start walking past Tesco to spend a little bit more to support local businesses (we’re as guilty as anyone on this) that’s probably not going to happen. But it’s your money that’s controlling this town, and your voice. We asked you to speak up last year and you did, and now look where we all are. The council has confirmed your right to get yourself heard so let’s keep things heading in the right direction.

NEWS WORDS BY NICK COQUET

PRIDE’S PINK POUND PRESSURE

It’s a make or break year for Pride as it attempts to generate some actual income for once via a ticketed entry system. The days of rocking up with a rucksack full of supermarket booze and food are alas gone, which inevitably means the Preston Park side of the weekend could struggle to pack in punters prepared to pay festival prices, especially in the face of so many free alternative events going on as well. Joe McElderry and 80s pop ‘icon’ Sonia head up a new live stage – hopefully they’ll shore up the day with their many pleasing hits.

BANDS’ HELPING HANDS

Oxfam are obviously doing good things for poor folk around the world all the time, but when they mix it up with bands and DJs and that, it’s even better. Yes, it’s time for Oxjam to kick off again this month, launching on Thursday 28th at Pop Up Playgroup (ex-Hector’s) with bands and DJ sets, as well as Juice FM’s Guy Lloyd having his bits waxed live on air. It’s the start of a run of events that go through til October. Get on it like Bono’s bonnet at oxfam.org.uk/oxjam and help feed the world.

BURLESQUE FEST

Taking the splendid entertainment that is burlesque and propping it up with an array of stalls, sideshows and live psychobilly music, Heresy’n’Heelz come to the Concorde 2 on Friday 5th. It’s their first ‘on tour’ event of 2011 and features Slinky Sparkles and Marnie Scarlet as well as some fire-based performance and retail opportunities from corsetry to cupcakes. Heresynheelz.co.uk is your online pole to gyrate around.

RUN FOR RISE

Ladies – if you can run eight kilometres without keeling over and you’d like to help out women and kids who’ve been on the receiving end of domestic abuse, this is the event for you. RISE, a local service provider charity, is taking registrations now for their annual under-cliff Saltdean women’s run on Sunday 18th September. It costs £15 to take part but you get a goodie bag full of lovely lip gloss and mascara and stuff worth £20 – great value eh? Get registered at riseuk.org.uk, get sponsored and get running.

BE THERE IN THE SQUARE

Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st see Brunswick Square come alive with its 30th annual festival – a neighbourly hubbub of gazebos, face-painted children and dogs with sunglasses on (if the promotional literature we’ve seen bears true). It runs from a sedate midday til 7pm and is the most village green-y event in town over the summer, with a decent crop of local bands, fodder and booze for the toe-dipping festivalgoer.

PUB’S FESTIVAL PUN

Friday 19th kicks off Gladstonebury, a weekend of charity music and arts festivaling at the big yellow pub that is The Gladstone on Lewes Road. Like its almost-namesake, it promises a bill with something for everyone – last year saw the ASBO Retards and the Gyratory Allstars appearing, the latter presumably named after the traffic system the pub overlooks, the Vogue Gyratory. Proceeds go to the Martlets and Macmillan, so top up your do-good reserves and get in there.

LABEL SHOWING

It’s good to see record labels starting up, especially when they’re rocking a BN postcode. Little Known Records are taking bands across town from all genres and uniting them via the medium of Live Lounge-style unplugged performances. The first such compilation is out now, and it’s all run on a nonprofit basis; any dough they make gets ploughed back in. Facebook.com/littleknownrecords is where aspiring bands can mither them and punters can check them out.

FOLK FEST

When hot local promoters Melting Vinyl hook up with the estimable Willkommen Collective for a day-long outing, you know you’re getting something ace. Foxtrot promises to be just that, with a celebration of all things folk in the regal surroundings of Stanmer House on September 11th. Top French/Swedish ‘anti-folk godfathers’ Herman Dune are headlining, with special guests including Sam Amidon, Hannah Peel, Nancy Elizabeth and Stephen Craknell’s Memory Band, plus general Willkommen collaborations. Tickets are £22.50 from Resident and Rounder.

HOTEL PELIROCCO

Brighton’s most colourful artist and designer, Jess Eaton, hit national headlines in May with her Roadkill Couture collection for Brighton Fashion Week. Now she’s hitting the high street, in collaboration with renowned tattooist Jon Nott, with a combined shop and studio. EatonNott, at 26 Preston Road, is packed with oddities from the Roadkill collection, plus skeletons, taxidermy, medical and military equipment and general Victoriana – the perfect place for a “where the fuck did you get that?” gift opportunity or more general Ikea-avoiding home décor.

The Sidewinder, in the heart of Kemptown, has always had a great outdoor space, but now they’ve outdone themselves with the unveiling of a new garden area provided by the good people at Tanquery gin. What’s more, they’ve got a new chef and menu on board, a new range of beers and, thanks to Paul Jonas from Tru Thoughts and Phil Marten of Turin Brakes fame who run the place, a ramped-up live band booking policy including Turin Brakes themselves, Fip and Jennifer Left. Definitely worth a visit if you haven’t been for while, or even if you have.

This is the brainchild of Jackie Chase at Under the Bridge Studios, offering members of the community the opportunity to broadcast their own shows live across the internet. The Reel Review Show is the latest, a film review half-hour presented by Mark Booth and Jonny Russell who cast their collective eye across cinema’s biggest hits and most sensational flops. Tedium is their enemy, diversion their master – tune in on Friday nights at 7.30pm at radiofreebrighton.org.uk or listen to the podcasts at soundcloud.com/thereelshow.

THE CHANGING ROOM

Here’s a nice idea for updating your wardrobe – The Changing Room is a new clothing agency outlet at 146 Islingword Road who will punt out your old clothes (providing they’re clean and not all ripped and stuff), and give you back half the cash. There are vintage pieces amongst the stock, but it seems to be mainly day-to-day gear for all ages, kids included. Check out the website at thechangingroombrighton.co.uk for more details.

Page 6

We like re-appropriations of Brighton legends for high street premises names – it used to amuse us to get our hair cut at Fatboy Trims. This one’s nomenclature is just as obvious; a bead shop just up from Churchill Square at 12 Dyke Road. It has a big vintage feel about it with a range of pearls, cameos and swallows as well as a handmade selection, and there’s also a vintage headband collection for the growing White Mink fraternity out there. Cast a beady eye at bigbeadboutique. co.uk for more info.

If you’re out there living an urban lifestyle, then a store dedicated to its requisite apparel, art and accessories will be right up your street, especially if your street is also Church Street. Tricky-to-find brands like Sixpack France, Palace Skateboards and Pro Keds all make an appearance, and the shop’s part of a one-room boutique hotel called the Harrington, which promises chandeliers made of Lego and wineglasses. Go Belowstore.co.uk for further investigation.

The Pelirocco on Regency Square has launched a new room; ‘Cloud Cuckoo Land’ was designed by Brighton duo Ridley and Dowse, who are a jeweller and print designer respectively. They’ve done stuff for Harrods, Boxfresh and Wayne Hemingway before, and this represents further confirmation of their ace work. Check it out on the top floor, or just hang out in the Peli bar, which is always a neat place to get the right side of a few cold drinks anyway.

PLATFORM TRAINING

We get a lot of CDs sent to SOURCE from people who’ve made their music on a laptop – the fact that you don’t need huge banks of equipment anymore means pretty much anyone can do it. But not everyone really should… Platformtraining.co.uk are running week-long courses in Logic Pro 9, which will teach you about recording, editing, effects and all the tricks you’ll need to elevate your game to the review-worthy. It’s 30 hours of cranial hard drive cramming for £250 – sounds worthwhile.

EXIT TEN Hydrant Thurs 4th

Reading’s Exit Ten are steadily rising Brit metal hopefuls, with approval from the mainstream rock press and slow-building slots at the likes of Download and Sonisphere. Intelligent but not pretentious, epic but not overblown, they’re a decent bet for a deserving crossover. Having revitalised live music in their Eastbourne hometown, the tireless Rio Bravo Promotions have pulled together a strong regional support bill (Here There Be Monsters, Decodes, City Of Ashes) for this latest incursion into the Brighton scene. (SH)

WORLD/INFERNO FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY Hydrant Fri 5th

For five summers now, a cluster of Brooklyn anarchists have gathered together whatever instruments they could and descended on Brighton for one night to “fuck shit up.” Frontman Jack Terricloth, a bouncer-baiting rabble-rouser who treats his microphone as a megaphone, is backed by a punk cabaret supergroup playing deranged circus music, anarcho jazz and more. Previous visits have seen them increasingly heat up audiences, but don’t panic should an actual inferno ensue. This time the fire station is next door. (AP)

ILLNESS •

Cowley Club Fri 5th

Instrumental pair Illness create choppy, melodic tunes from the basic elements of thrashed drums and tightly wound guitar. They’re splitting up after this weekend’s brief HastingsBrighton-London farewell tour, leaving a neat legacy of deceptively simple small-label recordings behind them. Tour partners Depakine Chrono offer a Czech alternative, extracting a slightly proggier sound from the same source materials as the Brighton duo. Not speaking Czech, we could only grasp the phrase “acid punk” from their website, but that’ll do it. (SH)

JASON RINGENBERG Greys Mon 8th

The Greys’ impressive international reach brings one of the

washed out

godparents of alt.country inside its intimate walls this evening. Jason Ringenberg is most widely known for fronting Nashville cowpunk legends Jason & The Scorchers, who have spread their raucous rock’n’roll twang around the world for thirty years now. Wonderfully, the indefatigable Ringenberg also performs animal-centric kids’ songs in the guise of Farmer Jason. Tonight, expect a selection of upbeat and heartfelt tunes from Ringenberg’s broad songbook. (SH)

WASHED OUT

Haunt Weds 10th

Over the last couple of years Ernest Greene has helped pioneer chillwave; a genre whose sticky ingredients – including the signature slow pace, hazy synths and drifting vocals as well as all the bleached imagery – seemed to have permeated through a multitude of other genres ever since. Following two years of EPs and much blog hype, (some seemingly started purely to cover his genre), we now get to hear his muchanticipated debut album, ‘Within And Without’, which he’s showcasing on an extensive tour throughout the UK and Europe this summer. (TR)

GRIMES

The Haunt Fri 12th

If you want an example of just how the giant SXSW Texas festival can help bring an artist to the attention of those hunting out new music, then look no further than the Montreal-based solo artist, Clare Boucher. She had the music media’s tails well and truly wagging following her performance at the Gorilla vs Bear blog’s SXSW showcase. Her inventive concoction of ethereal pop music is utterly hypnotic live, so her support performance for headliners How To Dress Well is well worth your early arrival. (TR)

THE BEAUTIFUL WORD • Brunswick Fri 12th

For some of the hipsters walking our streets, ukulele bags and glockenspiel cases are the new handbags. Sounding like a folk session in a kindergarten, but a good one, The Beautiful Word have been playing their ‘mystery pop’ regularly across Brighton’s Land Of The Twee. Tonight’s gig is a bit special though, marking as it does the end of their UK tour and the launch of new single ‘Emily’, described by one somewhat disconcerting YouTube commenter as “a great song to masturbate to on a beach.” (AP)

FLEET FOXES

Dome Tues 16th

In 2010, determined not to become typecast as archly gifted purveyors of hymnal, rustic Americana, Fleet Foxes retreated to the underground cave they call home to record the followup to their self-titled breakthrough debut album. Ripping up the rule book with the sort of wild imagination they should perhaps consider using next time a hairdresser drops by, they emerged energised with ‘Helplessness Blues’, breaking stunning new ground as archly gifted purveyors of hymnal, rustic Americana. Where they go next is anyone’s guess. (BG)

DELS

Concorde 2 Fri 19th

Ipswich isn’t an obvious place in which to source the next big thing in UK hip hop, yet in recent months the Suffolk-born Kieren Dickins has made himself one to watch. Now Londonbased, he’s signed to the Ninja Tune imprint, Big Dada, and had Kwes, Micachu and Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard on hand to produce his debut album, ‘GOB’, which arrived earlier this year. You would struggle to find a better example of an urban record with crossover appeal, so this gig should suit all. (TR)

QUEEN TRIBUTE

Komedia Fri 19th

Fans of the British chart goliaths could be mistaken for thinking tonight’s tribute will actually come from the postFreddie Mercury incarnation/aberration. For some years Brian May and Roger Taylor, seemingly blind to exactly what it was they were doing from atop their lofty throne in rock’s House of Lords, have used the band’s legacy as some kind of pop culture bog roll. All praise then to John Deacon, who gracefully stepped out long ago, and this lot, who have no interest in such blasphemy. (BG)

CSS

Digital Sun 21st

CSS were once the coolest band in the world. But, where 2003-5 was all about so-called punk funk, the world turned and punk funk went the way of electroclash: into the annals of flash-in-the-pan genre names. The fact that knowingly dirty disco pop, played by a rag-tag mob of South American girls

Page 10

doesn’t have a handy name any more doesn’t make it any less groin-grabbingly brilliant live than it always was. And it really was. (MB)

NEW FOUND GLORY Concorde 2 Weds 24th

Fancy seeing New Found Glory in weather-protected surroundings just a few days before their main stage Reading and Leeds appearances? Well if you do, you’re in luck because they’ve chosen to warm up at the Concorde 2. They’re known for their energetic live shows so be prepared to get sweaty. Oh, and just to make your night even better (and to add insult to injury to those who can’t make it) pop punk’s next big thing Save Your Breath will be supporting. (AJM)

WATER TOWER BUCKET BOYS

Haunt Sat 27th

After selling out their two previous Brighton shows, the Bucket Boys will once again be bringing their hard-driving, fastpicking, harmony-fuelled fusion of bluegrass, old-time and country music to town and throughout the UK in support of their new EP, ‘Where The Crow Don’t Fly’. An incredible live band – if there was ever music to dance and drink whiskey to then this is definitely it. Support comes from locals Amy Harrison & The Secondhand Stringband. (IC)

AT THE EDGE OF THE SEA Concorde 2 Sat 27th

At The Edge of The Sea, the annual one-day shindig curated by the Wedding Present’s David Gedge returns to, er, the edge of the sea. The stellar line-up features London electro popsters Summer Camp, Badly Drawn Boy, Cinerama and a headline set by The Wedding Present. Also on the bill are three bands featuring members of the current Weddoes line-up: Graeme Ramsay’s shoe-gazey outfit Silvermash will appear alongside Charles Layton’s Dirty Fingernails and Pepe le Moko’s Brighton combo Stars Down To Earth. Last year’s bash sold out, so get your tickets sharpish. (GS)

OUTFIT

Green Door Store Tues 30th

Fledgling Brighton-based music promoters Be Nothing team up with hot London indie label Double Denim to bring you Outfit. They’re an art rock five-piece from Liverpool, for fans of Talking Heads, Roxy Music and early Franz Ferdinand, who (refreshingly) use their interest in aesthetics to grab people’s attention where most bands rely on internet presence. Their first single ‘Two Islands’ is due to be released in September. (JG)

EAST 17

Concorde Weds 31st

What could go wrong for East 17, as they look to recreate Take That’s astounding chart renaissance? There were fears that Brian Harvey might scupper the comeback, perhaps by reversing over the entire band in a tour bus prank gone badly wrong. So he’s been wisely sacked, while Tony Mortimer is back. Sadly, new single ‘Secret Of My Life’ suggests the quartet’s look has developed to that of ‘builder’ chic, while their prehistoric pop sound hasn’t developed at all. Give up, lads. That cement needs stirring. (BG)

RON SEXSMITH

Komedia Weds 31st

Elton John, Chris Martin and Michael Buble are all big fans, but don’t let that put you off. Now 12 albums in, Canadian singersongwriter Ron Sexsmith is finally getting the attention he deserves and craves, and not only from middle-of-the-road ‘megastars’. With the aptly-titled, ‘Long Player, Late Bloomer’, he’s even managed to combine a fair few UK sales to match the critical praise he’s had for years. The album sees him veer from crooning melancholy to rousing jangle-fests, all of which should be perfect for a late summer’s night out. (GS)

AK/DK

TWO IMPROVISING DRUMMERS WHO ALSO PLAY SYNTHS – HOW DID AK/DK BEAT ALL ODDS TO BECOME BRIGHTON’S BEST LIVE BAND? WORDS BY JAMES KENDALL PHOTO BY KENNY MC CRACKEN, ASSISTED BY Zoe Baker. THANKS TO TORA COLWILL at THE DUKE OF YORK’S CINEMA, AND ROUNDER FOR THE 3D GLASSES

It was krautrock legend Damo Suzuki who made us realise that the two synth-playing drummers known as AK/DK were Brighton’s best live band. If you’re a music geek you’ll know that the Can singer travels around the world performing with a hometown band every time he stops. The Brighton promoter thought that Ed Chivers and G Sowerby would be a good match and hooked them up for a gig at the Green Door Store. Joined by a bass player, they played a tight, blistering set of complex, noisy, leftfield electro rhythms with an ebb and flow of the most delicately programmed dance music. Obviously there was a nod to 70s German music, but this was all new – exciting and challenging but accessible and danceable. We were completely breathless. Having Damo Suzuki there seemed like the icing on the cake rather than the cake itself. We sought out AK/DK in the bar afterwards to give pats on backs and asked them how long it took them to learn the songs. ‘Oh no,’ they replied, ‘it was all improvised, we’d never played a note of that before.’ We laughed, but they remained straight-faced. They were serious, they’d just made this incredible, faultless hour of music up off the top of their heads. “I’d never even met Damo until he came on stage,” remembers Ed as we settle into the Duke Of York’s bar a few months later. “When we were asked we thought, ‘Yes, we can do that,’” says G. “It was the perfect thing. He was so passive, deliberately so. We didn’t discuss the music with him at all. Not at all. It was a real honour to play with him.” Suzuki-san seemed unfazed by the idea of playing with two

Page 14

drummers surrounded by electronics, but it’s an extremely odd band to find yourself in. AK/DK’s original conception involved booze, obviously. “It was a complete accident really,” Ed recalls. “I met G at the gig of another band of mine. We had an aftershow party and got drunk together and discussed how much we loved drums and synths. We decided there should be a band that was just drums and synths.” Like many late night plans, nothing came of it. That is until the friend who introduced them to each other booked them a gig. He wouldn’t accept that it was just drunken talk and one Saturday night they found themselves heading to London with no songs to play. “We went up and played the first set improvised and, luckily, it went off amazingly,” says G. “Who knows what would have happened if that gig didn’t have such an amazing reception?” Not having any songs appeals to the pair not least because, having been in bands before, they know knocking out the same set gig after gig can get a bit dull. The setlist is now split 50/50 between written material and improvised jams, working with amazing visuals from metaLuna. “We decided to write some songs in case the sound wasn’t that good,” explains Ed. “For two years or so we improvised or came up with different songs all the time and never really recorded anything. We found it difficult to nail down that excitement of when you’re on stage and you’ve just come up with something. Live, the audience see that and it creates this

www.brightonsource.co.uk/bands

“We look down at our hands and think, I don’t know where this is coming from” cycle. Getting that on tape is not easy.” But getting stuff on tape is exactly what they’ve done. Typically they skipped past releasing a CD and jumped back to the cassingle for their debut. “People buy mp3s now but you can’t sell an mp3 at a gig because people don’t want to buy thin air,” says Ed, wisely. “And CDs are boring. Vinyl’s great but it’s too expensive to produce. The cassette is the symbolic physical product of the mp3 download.” “I did feel proud when I saw my music on a tape because when I was a kid that was it, I had tapes,” explains G. “They were my whole world and then they were all gone. They’re charming.”

the pair point out they’ve already got enough equipment to be dealing with. “People always want to buy something and initially we were really anti releasing anything as it’s not really the point of the project,” says Ed.

The one-off, randomness of it all is clearly something the pair thrive on, to the point that if they see a friend in the audience who can sing, they’ll often drag them onstage to join in. But how can they keep on top of all these elements? If they don’t know what noise they’re going to make next themselves, how do they know what noise the other’s going to make? “We did experiment with sign language and stuff but Ed could never remember it,” smiles G. “We’re beginning to remember Lead track is the crashing, bleepy ‘Lost Eric’ – almost a pop song in comparison to their live onslaught. Of course it’s as the things that the other might do and shift accordingly. Also noisy as any band of drummers is going to be, but it’s also we begin to feel when the other person’s building an intention. catchy as hell and breezes quickly by at under three minutes. And sometime we just literally have to shout across.” “The stuff we’ve recorded recently is like radio edits of “Eyebrows!” says Ed with a smile. “The higher the eyebrows something that might go on for about ten minutes on stage,” go and the more nodding says it all.” Ed explains. “There were times when we first started playing where I felt AK/DK record their live sets and practices and then listen back totally vulnerable and foolish onstage,” admits G. “But you just to them to identify the best parts. They then spend the rest of have to block that out of your mind and try something else. the time trying to make a recording that matches up to the And then sometimes we realise, ‘Hey, we’re in the middle of a excitement of that. song here.’” “As soon as we’re in the studio and “We look down at our hands and they’re decide, ‘Now it time to rock’, it kills the doing stuff and we’re thinking, ‘I don’t vibe,” says G. “We try to record everything know where this is coming from,’” says Ed in case there’s something great.” with genuine surprise. WEB: akdk.co.uk There’s talk of recording live shows so you We don’t know either but we hope it keeps SINGLE: ‘Lost Eric’ out now can buy them at the end of the gig but as on coming. BORGORE

Audio Weds 3rd

Tonight Supercharged host Borgore, the Israeli DJ who happily ruined dubstep with his rock and hip hop inflections to create his self-proclaimed hybrid sound of gorestep. Too insolent to ignore and too carnal to resist, Borgore’s productions are chainsaw raw with lyrics full of tongue-incheek humour and blatant innuendo, so if you’re sitting on the fence about this night just get down to Audio. We’re positive it’ll be a case of Stockholm syndrome, if not, maybe he’ll just kidnap you anyway. (ZC)

IN THE FACE •

Volks Fri 5th

Brighton doesn’t have a lot of bassline, it’s all dubstep this and drum’n’bass that. To remedy the situation we have the In The Face crew. When these guys hosted at the Concorde bar during Dave Clarke’s gig, they tore the place up and started a loyal following. This evening Rrritalin tops the bill with his wonky rave and acid-driven bassline that burns harsher than Alien blood. Local lad Bruce Stallion backs him up, plus the In The Face DJs; Simtek, Gash, Hadean and Fucknose. (ZC)

LIFE IS TWO •

Life Fri 5th - Sat 6th

Who can remember life before Life? This two-day birthday party promises to make sure you forget. With Friday’s sixhour line-up including Midland, Space Dimension Controller and Blawan and Saturday’s 12-hour endurance fest showcasing Marcel Dettmann, Appleblim, Lorca and Yusuf Sebati, as well as the AKAAKAROAR residents, it’d be highly impolite not to show your face and celebrate the continued successes and innovations of one of Brighton’s most forward-thinking and freshest nightclubs. KING TUBBY’s FULL SOUND SYSTEM

Concorde 2 Fri 12th

The legendary dub pioneer himself sadly won’t be making an appearance tonight, what with being shot dead in 1989 and all that. But his famed sound system, now in its 41st year, is here to honour his dubby last will and testament and fill the room with deep bass rumbles and echoing riddims. Scrappa, Young Buck and Stevie Face are all on the bill, as well as a Brighton Soundclash featuring Aces Crew versus Unity Hi Fi in a crowdjudged dub-off. (NC)

FROCKABILLY •

Presented in association with Vavavavoom!, this night promises jet-propelled vintage tunes, burlesque performances from Stella Starr & The All Stars, a Sailor Jerry-style tattoo parlour and vintage clothes stalls, plus two floors of dancing action courtesy of the Dusty Groove Jukebox Show and Citizen Lane. Win prizes for being the best-dressed intergalactic explorer or space babe – you get the idea. Opening the Pride weekend in 50s style, the night is raising money for MindOut, an LGBT mental health project. (NC)

GO BANG •

Green Door Store Fri 12

Go Bang have been sneaking into the Green Door Store and putting on mini warehouse parties since the start, but now – armed with a new gang member in the form of VJ Matt Page – Ali and Affy are ready to go monthly. They were right at the forefront of the disco revival back in 2006, putting on one-off parties in cafés and basements, and if you’re looking for somewhere to hear “groove-based music” then there’s no friendlier dancefloor. A near-religious experience for everyone who goes, it seems. (JK)

PRODUCERS’ RETREAT •

Brighton Rocks hosts a street party for Pride every year but we don’t remember one as exciting as this. House legend after house legend is appearing from noon onwards over the weekend, though we’re not a hundred percent on who’s on when. What we do know is Chemical Brothers inspiration and eclectic hero Justin Robertson is down, alongside ex-Cream resident and Circus fella Yousef. Steve Proctor – a house pioneer from Shoom, Boy’s Own and many more – will be playing alongside our own Steve Mac, fresh from his ‘Roots’ LP on Nic Fanciulli’s Saved label. Blimey. (JK)

Producers’ Retreat are deserting the usual pub interior for a special holiday: an afternoon of music on the beach, with the theme of PARTYTRON. Local producers and artists come together each month and unite their styles over a common theme – this month’s being devoted to robotic rhythms, beeping beats and probably a lot of silver spray-paint and tin foil helmets. Strictly local, expect to see the shiniest stars of the graffiti scene, dazzling new artists and to hear some of Brighton’s spaciest new beats for free. (JMM)

DELS & GHOSTPOET Concorde 2 Fri 19th

Getting lauded by The Streets’ Mike Skinner is a good way to help artists break through and it’s certainly worked for Ghostpoet. After his recent spellbinding shows at Camden Crawl and The Great Escape we’re glad there’s another chance to catch his somnambulant style live. He’ll be on stage with DELS, the recent Big Dada signee who delivers urgent lyrics over indie electronica such as his viral internet hit ‘Shapeshift’. And now that he’s on the same label as ‘Shapeshift’ collaborator Joe Hot Chip there should be plenty more where that came from. (ZC)

JAMIE JONES Audio Fri 19th

We thought that cos it’s summer Jamie Jones would be in Ibiza all month but, no, Schtumm have persuaded the neotechno legend to our less sunny coastline. Perhaps because promoter Sam Watts’ new Maxxi Soundsystem single is appearing on Jones’ Hot Waves imprint. Whatever, it’s quite a coup and whether you like techno or heavy, groove-based house built from the bassline up we’re sure you’ll be there to see the DC10 regular preview his Fabric mix album. (JK)

GREYMATTER • Riki Tik Sat 20th

Brighton’s dark horse Greymatter, or Graham to his friends, is presenting his latest tunes to his home crowd on Saturday, on Riki Tik’s much-improved and much-hyped new sound system. Always a purveyor of original and eclectic combinations, Greymatter’s latest tunes demonstrate his commitment to jazz, blending it seamlessly with synths, bass wobbles whilst nodding towards UK funky and classic house styles. Support comes from Riki Tik regulars attak.media, JDevious and Figure of Wax, so it’s guaranteed to have a slick party vibe. (JMM)

GIRL UNIT The Tube Sat 20th

His tune ‘Wut’ was a defining track for London label Night Slugs last year and they had to bring forward the release date as DJs were ripping edits from wherever they could just to play it out. The anthemic synths and cut-up helium-style vocals create a blissful soundscape that flows over you in exaltation. The B-side ‘Every Time’ was similarly desirable; being both euphoric and otherworldly it has a fluctuating stomp to it and a stuttered female sample floating over the top. If you want to get to grips with future house, Girl Unit’s definitely the guy to show you the ropes. (ZC)

According to the histrory books, Nero fiddled while Rome burned. But that was many years ago and tonight the dubstep act of the same name are more likely to be found fiddling with their equipment and bass oscillations while Brighton gurns. Feted amongst the nominees for the BBC’s acclaimed Sound Of 2011 survey, headline duo Daniel Stephens and Joe Ray are about to unleash their debut manifesto, ‘Welcome Reality’, which will is set to seal their status as modern day Roman Emperors of the British charts. Hail Nero! (BG)

ROSKA

Riki Tik Fri 26th

Riki Tik is re-inventing itself as a legitimate electronic music venue, and this re-launch party with Roska suggests good things are coming. With a plethora of local DJs and live artists painting up a storm, this night is set to place the venue firmly back on the map. Roska’s hybrid of UK funky, house and dubstep caters to a wide audience, so get down early to sample the new cocktail range, witness some of the best local artists at work, and give your ears a treat with the refurbished sound system. Mash Tun Tues 30th

Seven local DJs playing seven of their finest 7’’ records can only have one outcome: a glorious amalgamation of 70s funk, 80s rock, 90s pop and absolutely zero idea of what will be played next. Celebrating a format that’s rarely seen outside of charity shops, with CDs, full-size records and mp3s strictly not welcome, the only thing that it’s possible to predict about this night is the rediscovery of your childhood favourites and some hilarious record sleeves. WORKSHOP: ROCKSHOP TOUR: DOME DISCOVERY Dome Mon 1st-Fri 5th

This is a week-long event which has bass legend Herbie Flowers and his muso mates overseeing youngster musicians and singers forming new bands, for a Corn Exchange performance on the Friday. Not quite sure how it works – maybe you suck your cheeks in hoping to be picked by the cool kids, but it sounds like a good opportunity to both get your career kick-started and also bug Herbie about his bassline on ‘Walk On The Wild Side’. Pre-book, nametag your gear, and you’re off. (NC)

FILM: JAWS

Duke of York’s Thurs 4th

Must…resist…saying…“timeless classic”. If you were a kid in Brighton in the 1980s there were certain films – Jaws, The Fog, maybe Brighton Rock – which nurtured the belief that you too could be sniped by a gangster off Madeira Drive or get gulped down by a Great White if you swam past the West Pier. A quick count on the Wikipedia entry for Jaws shows no fewer than 13 references deeming it the greatest film of all time, and Wiki never lies. (BM)

TALK: GRAHAM HARWOOD

Lighthouse Thurs 4th

Admirably-bearded media art mogul Graham Harwood co-founded Mongrel with partner Matsuko Yokokoji in 1995, a collective who combined electronic noodlings with all things ‘street’ in a kind of outsider art take on the personal and political. These days the BAFTA nominees, known as YoHa, make things like memorials to thousands of Second World War slave labourers, which chart their lung capacities on a screen. Harwood’s appearance in Brighton also marks a return to the city he was born in. (BM)

Dome Sun 7th

As part of a summer of behind-the-scenes snooping at local cultural landmarks, The Dome is sneaking people in the back door and showing them some fascinating stuff from the regal venue’s illustrious history. You might not see Abba’s shiny hot pants from their Eurovision win there or Jimi Hendrix’s charred guitar, but you’ll get a glimpse of a cool secret tunnel that we didn’t know about, running from the Concert Hall to the Royal Pavilion, as well as free tea and cake with your ticket. THEATRE: PARADE PROTEST PERFORM Marlborough Theatre Thurs 11th, Fri 12th and Sun 14th

Co-produced with The Nightingale, Pink Fringe survey the thorny issue of what Pride means to Brighton’s rich tapestry of beautiful people during a performance trail through the queer heart of the city. Aiming to be “playfully provocative”, they enlist a dancer, surreal performance artists and an intellectual drag queen, armed with glitter, whistles, rainbow flags, banners and loudspeakers. The person dressed in what looks like the remains of a woolly mammoth on the promo material suggests this could get interesting. (BM)

THEATRE: THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR Little Theatre Weds 17th – Sat 20th

The Royal Shakespeare Company has worked with The Little on this production as part of a scheme pairing amateur companies with hardened professional thesps, and it’s also notable because they’ve decided to transport the farce to the 1920s, adding

FILM: THE HORROR DOUBLE BILL

Komedia Sun 21st

Retro gore is clearly where it’s at in film this month, as the Classic Horror Campaign reinvents BBC 2’s gruesome double bills of the 70s and 80s, alongside giveaways, spooky trailers and competitions. The two chosen flicks are ghost bloodfest House On Haunted Hill (a California-shot 1959 number which is thought to have influenced Hitchcock’s Psycho), and Asylum, a British title from 1972. Come To The Asylum…To Get Killed!, reads the inviting poster. Who could resist an offer like that? (BM)

THEATRE: A REDUCED SHAKESPEARE COMPANY DOUBLE BILL Little Theatre Thurs 25th-Sat 27th

An ace double-bill from the Little’s Youth Group, bravely attacking The Reduced Shakespeare Company’s whirlwind The Complete Works Of William Shakespeare (Abridged), where 37 plays in 90 minutes include a rap Othello, sock puppet Hamlet and a culinary Titus Andronicus. Then it’s swiftly on to All The Great Books (Abridged), a snappy comedy hurtling through Chaucer, Dickens, Jane Austen and Harry Potter as part of a crash course in literary history. Breathless stuff, and more than likely brilliant. (BM)

Having immersed ourselves in choral sounds piped through speakers the last time out at Fabrica, the equally meditative proposition of a makeshift kinetic waterfall fills the space for their latest installation. Made by Stéphane Cauchy, a Lille artist who uses mechanical experiments to strike a balance between science and philosophy, Cascade carries water through the air in buckets operated by a revolving pulley, emptying into a pool at your feet in a gentle and poetic bit of magic. SINGLE: BELLA SPINKS • Words (Sublime)

There’s something about laying your soul bare with minimal accompaniment that lends a singer a particular raw authenticity. Bella’s gentle finger picking of acoustic guitar forms a gentle backdrop for a double-tracked, close folk harmony, encapsulating both yearning and suffering. Back-up track ‘Wonderous’ follows similar musical terrain, with an inner confusion and fear of mortality playing out through its duration – a delicious conflict of musical light and lyrical shade. (NC)

ALBUM: BETA HECTOR • Sunbeam Insulin (Tru Thoughts)

DEMO OF THE MONTH:

SKIRTS

An album timing in at a shade under 30 minutes across its five tracks, this is a triumph of quality over quantity. We reviewed their first album getting for three years ago, and the band seem to have ditched the tricksy electronica in favour of expansive post-rock anthems; this is a set of slow builders that pepper the less cynical epic-isms of Coldplay with a sprinkling of Spiritualized’s ethereal atmospheres. We can easily see them headlining a Glastonbury main stage – well, we could if it wasn’t for those damn flags. (NC)

EP: MAN RAY SKY • We haven’t heard from Man Ray Sky in a while, having apparently retreated from live work to concentrate on writing. And it’s certainly been worth the wait – this is ace. A shouldn’treally-work mix of indie drone guitars against lo-fi beats with percussive fills in all the right places form the backing for a hypnotic vocal, all layered and structured like someone really knows what they’re doing. And that’s just the title track – the others allow more experimentation that fulfils way more promise than it really ought to. An office favourite already. (NC)

Page 30

WeShouldHaveDestroyedOur GeneralsAndNotTheirEnemies (NWFA)

Having only a drummer and a bassist sadly precludes the Beatles from any further meaningful recording activity, but Skirts take this arrangement-limiting line-up and fly with it. In terms of the sound there’s an obvious comparison to DFA1979, but this has more of a sense of pop about the thrash, especially when viewed together with the excellent bandmade videos. Vintage bikini-clad rollerboot dance-offs and short shorts cheerleaders will brighten any tune but these stand perfectly alone as grungy punk promisers. (NC)

Since breaking ranks from the deep funk outfit Baby Charles, DJ Simon Hill has concentrated on his production work. Following a single release as Beta Hector in 2010, this is the first fulllength realisation of those ambitions. The funk’s still resolutely on board, with wild, crashing rhythms a la Quantic Soul Orchestra and spliced DJ Shadow-ing married to some space-age 8-bit electronica. A range of vocalists set off the tunes, which he’ll be taking to the road with the Beta Hector Band – definitely worth looking out for. (NC)

ALBUM: MONSTERS BUILD MEAN ROBOTS •

BOOK: Paul Stapleton & Alice Sharp • CAMRA Sutra* (Bedsit Press)

The latest comic book from local illustrator and fanzine evangelist Stapleton follows his house style of biscuit-headed characters exchanging witty dialogue in everyday situations. Half Man Half Biscuit and Doctor Who references abound in this story of a socially inept CAMRA Man’s courtship rituals. Co-writer Sharp, who works as a barmaid at real ale leisure hive the Evening Star, lends the book added authenticity – we’re off down there now to spot which of her regulars each character is based on. (AP)

SINGLE: SWEET SWEET LIES • Capital Of Iceland (Something Nothing)

After years at the gigging coalface Sweet Sweet Lies have built up some interesting fans. Many of Brighton’s finest music minds can be caught saying enthusiastic things – not least The Independent’s Simon Price. There’s the roughness of Nick Cave at his most shanty, but what grabs us most is the Levellers-meets-The Coral rhythm. Double bass and fiddle keep up with a tambourine and drum duel as it powers along like a runaway train, depicting a girl who knows the titular geographical conundrum and loves Johnnys both Cash and Marr, yet fails to exhibit any real personal depth. MILO BELGROVE Things I Know For Sure WORDS BY JAMES KENDALL

Some times good things come out of bad luck. Brighton-based photography scholar Milo Belgrove was having a crappy summer even before he jumped off a sea wall and busted his leg. His trip to Syria to shoot youth portraits cancelled, he started looking for something keep himself occupied. Influenced by his friend and contemporary Matt Martin – who has just released his debut book, We Are Lucky, featuring Milo and an array of other hot young photographers – Belgrove produced his first zine, ‘You’re Young Save Yourself’. It blew us away – full of life, full of energy – and sold out of its limited run instantly. So we thought, for the celebration of Brighton that this issue is, SOURCE should commission him to make another. We’re delighted with the results. Again Milo has packed his photos with emotion, just this time concentrating on one person, aspiring actress Dina Mouhandes. An expert at using natural light to express himself, one of his talents is portraying his relationship with his subject within the frame. It’s no surprise when he says “I guess it’s about love, friendship, hope, and escapism over a summer.” SOURCE readers will be available to buy zine – limited to 30 copies – from cargocollective.com/milobelgrove for “around a fiver.”

BROKEN BRIGHTON 2: BRIGHTON FIXED? ONE YEAR ON, WERE WE RIGHT TO WORRY? HERE’S OUR STATE OF THE NATION ADDRESS WORDS BY JAMES KENDALL PHOTO BY KEVIN MEREDITH We have to admit that as we sent last August’s issue to the printers, we panicked. Did anyone else care? Was anyone as worried about Brighton & Hove as us? Should we have just kept to pointing people to the best parties? But as soon as it hit the street it was obvious our Broken Brighton issue hit a nerve. Emails, Facebook messages and tweets flooded in – you weren’t happy about how things were panning out either. Supermarkets and chain coffee shops were opening as fast as music venues were shutting. Brighton’s unique quirkiness looked to be disappearing. It looked like we had a year before we turned into Milton Keynes. So, what’s changed?

It took some more bad news to get to the good news of The Haunt. The team running New Hero were ejected in a whirlwind of rumours. After a short while on the run from the wrong elements (we’d love to tell you the full story) they found a much better home in Pool Valley. Formerly KuKu, it had long suffered from a lack of good nights. In fact we were surprised to hear that it was still open. An insane new sound system and some great new lighting and we didn’t just have a brand new club – with It’s Still 1985 providing Saturday nights – but also an excellent new live music venue. Who knew it was under our noses all that time?

Thankfully, pretty much everything. The first beacon of hope was the Green Door Store. Early on in the building work (not long after the Broken Brighton issue) we took a little tour and our hearts skipped a beat. At that point we didn’t know what sort of music would be going into it but we loved the look of the place so much we shot our November cover there. The stripped-back industrial look had a feel of the places we loved in New York’s Williamsburg district. When Ed Lilo came on board to program the nights we knew we were going to spend a lot of time there. Already Greedos has settled into its own niche of great underground nights and bands you read about the more obscure blogs.

Meanwhile InnBrighton wasn’t resting on its laurels and decided to have a revamp of all its small clubs. Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar has gone from a venue with a killer soundsystem but no character to one of the most interesting clubs in town. Sidestepping dance music, Dynamite Sal and Iain ‘Hold Up’ Huddy have drafted in pretty much every good leftfield pop and indie night going. The Funky Buddha Lounge got rid of that terrible 90s name and emerged as The Tube, a cohesive line-up of underground dance music nights that are as cool as the name. Riki Tik is about to come into its own too, becoming an always-free-entry micro club. Dubstep legend Roska has been persuaded to play this month so we’ve got high hopes.

Less successful, but just as spirited, was the campaign to stop Sainsbury’s opening in the space left when Taj closed down on The Old Steine. With banner branding that would make most multinationals jealous, SaboTaj occupied the much-loved ethnic supermarket, turning it into an art gallery, but the police arrived early one morning and it was all over. Despite Morrisons being just a few doors up, Kemptown had another new supermarket. Before it could even open, graffiti saying ‘Burn Council Burn’ expressed the anger local people felt, but it was outside of their powers to stop national businesses opening where local ones had once stood. They gave Sainsbury a slap by refusing them an alcohol licence elsewhere at the North Street site. Little victories... After the failure of SaboTaj, The Mound looked like being ‘Lewes Road Part Two’ as community gardeners took their spades to the space near the Earth & Stars which had been rubble and weeds for a shocking 25 years. Despite being hugely popular with the local residents the owners kicked the gentle protesters out and bulldozed the place back to rubble. That there are still no plans to use the space – apparently other than as collateral for loans for other building work – seems almost criminal in such a built up city. Why doesn’t the council do something about it, you might ask. Again it seems there are limits to its powers. Just as they can’t stop supermarkets opening they can’t stop people not using their land or preventing community decoration of urban wasteland. But they are looking at making use of the empty buildings around the city. That’s progress at least. The current council is one of the things that gives us the most hope. Finally free of the Tories, the Greens – lead by Bill Randall (see interview on page 42) – are determined to get Brighton back on track and have already proved themselves to be hardworking, ethical and sensible. That last characteristic has been proved in their attitude towards protesting. They announced a few months ago that they believed that people had the right to have their voices heard in non-violent action. That’s never been so important and it also gives the police – who support the idea – a solid framework to work within. police move in on the sabotaj protest

But it hasn’t all been good news. Despite a spirited fight for survival The Freebutt couldn’t afford to put in the £20,000 of soundproofing needed. Now run by previous owners The Joiners it’s still not open, despite always seeming a month away from putting on live music. Work has, however, started on The Hippodrome, which has been through a range of hands but seems settled with überpromoters Live Nation. By all accounts it’s going to cost a lot more money than was originally thought but the current owners seem committed to what could be a great large venue. The Barfly’s doors remain closed though. We heard rumours that one of Brighton’s biggest club night promoters was offered the place but turned it down. File this one under ‘we’ll keep you posted’. Another venue that’s heading out of action is The Providence, this time for definite and for good. It will become a supermarket, though not a Tesco as we predicted last year. Instead Co-op have grabbed the space. It’s been a mixed bag for supermarkets over the last 12 months. The Lewes Road Community Garden protestors heroically turned opinion sufficiently to stop Tesco opening but couldn’t keep the place as a space for locals – instead apartments and shops are being built on the land.

www.brightonsource.co.uk/FEATURES

Another positive move is that the culture department has organised a six-weekly meeting of some of the key parts of the music industry to talk about any problems they are having and how the council might be able to help. This dialogue will help awareness on both sides of issues like noise complaints and shows how supportive the authorities can be about what they understand to be an important part of the city’s make-up. SOURCE was invited to be a part of it and we make sure we’re always in attendance. So what’s changed in a year? Primarily it’s that people want to fight, and they’d rather fight and lose than not fight at all. That’s amazing progress, especially with a council that understands that protesting doesn’t make you a criminal. And with successes under our belts like Lewes Road there’s a belief that it’s all worthwhile. There’s still a need to be on our guard with the encroachment of chain shops and supermarkets and while the odds are very much stacked against us – and the apathetic masses aren’t helping either – there’s a glimmer of hope that keeps us going. In terms of music venues we’ve probably got more really great venues now than we’ve had for years. Noise will continue to be an issue, especially as the need for new housing pushes town planning to its limits and existing venues find themselves with new neighbours. This remains our biggest concern. But while we were right to worry, Brighton & Hove is in great shape. Let’s keep our eye on the ball to make sure it stays that way.

LIVE BRIGHTON SINCE THE 60s

THE SIGHTS, THE FIGHTS, THE LEGENDARY NIGHTS WORDS BY DAVID COURTNEY, ALLAN FOWLER, DAMIAN HARRIS, JAMES KENDALL, THE PERV

Jimi hendrix at the Brighton Dome

Despite a spate of venue closures over the last year or so, Brighton remains an essential fixture on the music and club circuit. But this is nothing new, so we chatted to some local faces for a timely reminder of the city’s rich pop-cultural heritage over the last half-century.

THE 1960s

I fell in love with rock’n’roll when I was 12. It was at the Essoldo on North Street (now Sports Direct) – Gene Vincent came out as the support act to Adam Faith, dressed all in black leather. He was just brilliant. There were loads of places to see live music back then, but it was mostly local bands in church halls and youth clubs. Bigger bands played the Hippodrome; the Stones and The Beatles – they had all the Merseybeat bands there as well. There was the Florida Rooms above the Sealife Centre; the High Numbers (who became The Who) were regulars there, and the original Concorde was next door. But until the Brighton Centre came along The Dome was the main big venue really; I saw Jimi Hendrix there and The Pink Floyd came back every year. Brighton in the 60s did become like a mini San Francisco in the hippie era but really it was mostly about the mods and rockers. Quadrophenia did come close to how it was, but it kind of

Page 32

overplayed the violence a bit. There were riots of course but it was mostly more of an undercurrent. There were distinct mod and rocker areas and pubs; if you went into the wrong one in the wrong gear you knew you were in trouble. You just got out, quick. All the mods went to the Top Rank Suite (now the Odeon/Oceana) – it was a huge place back then with a revolving stage. Brighton’s certainly very different now, especially the North Laine area. During the war you could pick up properties there for next to nothing and just hope they didn’t get bombed. Back then it was virtually a slum; a lot of it was condemned to demolition in the 60s so where a lot of the flats are now used to be old back streets, all flattened. It was all very working class; only Hove really had any wealth in the 60s. North Laine is totally unrecognisable now; the café culture, the Komedia and arts centres – it’s a fabulous place. It’s Brighton as it always wanted to be. Allan Fowler worked in the print trade in the 60s. Today he consults for CD/DVD & Blu-ray manufacturing.

abba winning eurovison at the dome

zap fyers from the 80s

THE 1970s

THE 1980s

David Courtney was a record producer and songwriter in the 70s, a career he continues to this day. His autobiography is published in September.

The Perv was a postman and DJ in the 80s. These days he’s backstage manager at Concorde 2.

There wasn’t an abundance of live music venues like there is now, but some certainly stick out. I remember speaking to Abba in the Metropole before they won the Eurovision at the Dome in 1974, I was with Leo Sayer in the audience that night. We saw this Swedish band band with their gaudy outfits and thought, “What are they?”, but when we heard ‘Waterloo’ it was obvious it would win. I actually discovered Leo in Brighton, and wrote and produced all his hits with him – I’d held auditions at the Pavilion in 1971 and he came along with his band. I think the original Concorde was closed in the early 70s, but a lot of bands played at Sloopys (most recently New Hero); all the foreign students went there. I saw Elton John and Pink Floyd at the Dome but like I say, there really weren’t that many venues – a lot of bands played at the university. 70s Brighton was very colourful – it was dressing up time, not just jeans and t-shirts. With Rod Stewart, Marc Bolan and David Bowie, it was a glamorous time with all the make-up, and Brighton had a lot of people looking like that. A lot of boutiques in Duke Street were reflecting all of that. We had a very vibey club in The King’s Club (now the Thistle Hotel) – a private members club, that was the place to go to. The Top Rank was there of course – I saw the Stiff Records tour there with Elvis Costello, Ian Dury, Mari Wilson; that was quite incredible. We also had the first influxes of foreign students – 22,000 a year. They were everywhere; Scandanavians, South Americans, Persians as they were called then – that was quite a vibe in itself. I think Brighton’s retained the free spirit it had back then, it had something unique about it, a pioneering ground for people on various creative levels. From painters to musicians, it has a sort of San Francisco/Greenwich Village vibe to it. It was safer then though – you didn’t have the drug culture anything like you do now. And it looked a lot cleaner, but generally it’s never lost its vibe.

www.brightonsource.co.uk/features

In the early 80s the underground music scene was mostly centred around The Basement (under the art college). I played records between the bands there; saw U2 on the ‘Boy’ tour, Killing Joke when they set fire to the ceiling… There weren’t many big venues then but we also had the Alhambra (now the Thistle Hotel), with local bands like The Midnight Lemon Boys and The Piranhas. The Pedestrian Arms (now The Foundry) put bands on but most people with funny hair were banned. The best, or worst, venue was The Crypt on Queens Road (now a homeless refuge). You went downstairs, literally into a crypt, and when the music got too loud the dead just fell out of the walls. Not too funny when you’re on acid listening to deafening punk or reggae and a skull lands by your feet. Others I remember were Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV and Test Dept, who tried to get a digger in downstairs at the Escape (now Audio). Jenkinsons on the seafront (now the Odeon/Oceana) had bands like The Bunnymen and Teardrop Explodes, and I remember all the crews who followed bands like New Model Army and the Sisters Of Mercy around. In the late 80s Brighton started getting spoilt. It was sordid and dangerous before but it had that excitement – things would kick off. Oddly, we’d get looked after by the football hooligans – they’d pick on idiots and out-of-towners but they’d stick up for us. Most of the shops were independent then – the North Laine was dark and cool, selling things you actually needed… It hasn’t got the same energy now; there are way more clubs and bars but then they were proper old fashioned boozers, like the Heart & Hand. Acid house arrived at the Zap (now Digital) in 1987. No one else would touch it then, before it hit the headlines around 89 – it spoilt it when everyone else jumped on board. It was basically shitloads of ecstasy, a big community because of the nature of the music and the drugs. Tonka used to put the Happy Mondays on at the Zap and people would travel from all over the country, those parties were legendary.

THE 1990s

I moved to Brighton in late 1989. What struck me most was the sheer number of clubs, the musical diversity on offer and how relatively easy it was to put on a club night. Most musical genres had flagship nights and if, like me, you were going out six nights a week, you could hear the best of all of them. From house to hip hop, jazzy to indie. Shake Yer Wig, Tonka, Mad For It and Mufflewuffle were all big midweek nights. But it was The Coco Club on Saturday nights at The Zap that had the biggest influence. The Zap was arts-funded at the time and that allowed it the rare luxury of keeping a selective door policy; they would rather a club half full of passionate clubbers than filling up with strays from West Street. It kept the atmosphere special and built up a very loyal following. The early 90s saw dance music become more of a business; superstar DJs, club brands and exorbitant fees. Brighton operated under the radar of the ever-growing dance music media – we were seen as a slightly grubby but charming seaside town. A sense prevailed that if you wanted to be successful in music or arts you had to move to London. In 1993 I got a job with Loaded Records, pretty much the town’s only record label at the time. In 1995 they let me start up Skint as an offshoot and Fatboy Slim was born. We started The Big Beat Boutique in 1996 at the original Concorde. It was a Scout hut with a bar and suited us perfectly. Norman and I were the main residents – we built up a regular crowd who trusted us and indulged us, which, as a DJ, is a dream. Pretty soon it was packed, being written about and people even came down from that London. Brighton became, for better or for worse, the spiritual home of big beat.

THE 2000s

The 90s had a very strong musical identity in Brighton, but the first decade of the 21st century was when music exploded across the board. The Strokes – who would come to be the biggest influence of the decade – played at The Lift (now The Hope), and bands were back. There were an estimated 900 bands in the city by the end of the decade. Obviously The Maccabees, The Kooks and Bat For Lashes have gone on to great things, while Metronomy and Foals made records here and moved on to London. Brighton Live and The Great Escape (which arrived in 2006) gave us excellent inner city festivals. But dance music was still really strong for much of the noughties. Despite 250,000 people turning up for Fatboy Slim’s second seafront gig in 2002, big beat gave way to chillout and jazz-influenced downtempo, with Tru Thoughts leading the way, starting 2000 with Brighton boy Bonobo’s ‘Animal Magic’ and our own Quantic – both of whom DJed at classic midweek night Phonic:Hoop at The Enigma (now The Loft). Midweek clubs were where all the most interesting dance music was heard, not least in the shape of Supercharged, frequently voted the best breaks night in the country, and ace party night Gogglez. Progressive house had a good go at turning dancing into low-impact aerobics as everyone zoned out at nights like John Digweed’s Bedrock. Then Felix Da Housecat introduced electroclash to a handful of people at the Ocean Rooms and clubbing became fun. It was our Sex Pistols at The Manchester Free Trade Hall moment.

I find it difficult to talk about the influence Skint had on Brighton; I think a lot was down to timing. Equipment was cheaper and more accessible and it allowed people, influenced by Brighton’s diverse club culture the opportunity to make records. I also think there was an element of “Well if that lazy fucker can start a label, then so can I.”

The government gave us what we thought we wanted in 2005 – late pub serving and clubs that stayed open all night – and for years it was a disaster. Rather than three or four hours of intense madness, people arrived late and nights limped to an end as people got too tired or came down/sobered up. Throw in the smoking ban and dancefloors emptied out for years. The second part of the decade wasn’t a classic clubbing era, but it’s recovered now. Brighton’s every bit as good as it’s ever been – I’m looking forward to the good times to come.

In the 90s Damian Harris ran Skint Records and recorded as Midfield General, today he’s a writer and music producer.

James Kendall wrote for DJ Magazine during the 2000s. He is now the editor of SOURCE.

PLAYGROUP

festival turns two and graduates to big school WORDS BY NICK COQUET Some of the festivals you’ll attend this year are basically some bands on a stage, with a few burger vans and beer tents. Not Playgroup. Not by a long chalk. For those familiar with their Pop-Up Playgroup (née Hectors) it won’t be much of a surprise that they take the festival concept and breathe something magical into the experience. Bestival and Secret Garden would be its closest relatives, but this is on a smaller scale – no massive toilet queues or tent tenements, just an amazing experience in the countryside. Oh, and also some cool things to go see – as well as a top music bill there’s cabaret, games, art, magic, film, healing and of course great food and drink. Here’s just a few to look out for.

AK/DK

You already know all about our cover stars, as you’ve just read the interview on page 14, right? A messed-up mash-up of vintage synths, crashing drums and electro chaos on an everunique improvisational tip – don’t even think about missing them as you won’t see this show, or any other they do, again.

BENJI BOKO

Well he was our cover star last month, so refer to your leathereffect SOURCE collectors’ binder for his interview. Another one whose shows are never the same twice, Benji takes the art of mixing records and telly ephemera together and makes it, well, into an actual art. This will be a big crowd-pleaser.

STAY SICK DJS

This is a set at the decks that threatens to take everything green and lovely about the Playgroup setting and turn it Bourbon-brown. Filthy rock’n’roll and dirty funk’n’soul from a Tardis-like record crate – this is your soundtrack to getting messy, flattening your quiff with flying booze and generally dragging up the party from the past.

CARNIVAL COLLECTIVE

A 45-piece band – yes, 45 – makes for slim pickings on the

Page 36

GRASSCUT

backstage rider, but luckily this collective’s only hunger is to make you move. Drum’n’bass, kicks and beats from every dance genre you can think of are fed through traditional Brazilian instruments, with horns, guitars and electronics backing some sweet vocal styles.

DR DAVID BRAMWELL

The genius behind the Cheeky Guide to Brighton that everyone owns (right?), David’s also host of the Catalyst Club, an author and radio guy. This is his second one-man talk show, The No9 Bus To Utopia, based around his various travels through Europe and America in search of something better than rainsoaked Brighton.

GRASSCUT

Ninja Tune’s Grasscut make the kind of electronic music that suits Playgroup down to the ground. Esoteric and ethereal, the duo of award-winning soundtrack composer and classically trained musician take live programming, Stylophone, toy piano, double bass and guitar and arrive at a truly beautiful festival-esque sonic destination.

SAWCHESTRA

Don’t just sit there and gawp – here you can actually get involved with the music. In this performance the audience are invited to play along to a 1925 Lotte Reiniger piece with an orchestra of musical saws, toys and other unusual instruments. Bring your own percussion, bells or whatever you like, or pick from the band’s surplus gear, and help make a glorious racket.

THE CORRESPONDENTS

Playgroup regulars since 2007, this duo’s blend of vintage swing and jazz together with drum’n’bass and breaks now finds itself at the centre of the White Mink zeitgeist that’s packing out bigger and bigger rooms on an almost monthly basis. Come watch the masters of the art doing their dapper thing and you’ll see why.

STREET STYLE WORDS BY NICK COQUET PHOTO BY LOMOKEV FOR LOMOKEV.COM

Sometimes in Street Style, less is definitely more. It’s not always about making a bold statement in a try-hard ensemble – freespirited mismatching and quirky individualism will often turn heads but not always for the right reasons. Making the effort to make it all look quietly effortless will always win through. We spotted Kerry around town, who fits this bill perfectly. She says, “My style varies. When I was younger I did have that roll-around-in-Oxfam look but as I get older I like more classic, comfortable things with little quirks; little subversions like buttons to show a bit of personality. I don’t feel like I have to exhibit myself.” Read Kerry’s blog at yourstrulymag.blogspot. com, in the meantime here’s her outfit explanation. Hat from Camden Passage “I love olive green, it’s my favourite colour. My mum’s German and I love those sort of traditional, rural folk colours.” Hair “Is it natural? Ha, I wish! It’d save a lot of hassle. They’ve actually discontinued my colour so I’m on the hunt for another one. It’s always orangeyred.” Shirt from Top Shop “It’s a jersey shirt, I like it because it’s a classic style but not too stiff upper lip. It’s casual rather than austere.” Pendant from grandmother “It’s a silver locket that was my nanna’s – I inherited it. It has a photo of her and my grandfather inside.” Shorts from Top Shop “I like anything high waisted – again, I think this has quite a traditional, folky look.” Socks from H&M “I love anything with a floral print.” Shoes from eBay “These are tan brogues I got online. Yes, they were a bargain – I’m always looking for a bargain on eBay.” Kitten print bag from charity shop “I love it! I always see old ladies out with it for some reason – it’s real granny chic. I get grandmothers on the tube saying, ‘Ooh, I like your bag!’ I got mine for 20p in a charity shop.”

UNSUNG HERO

100 PEOPLE WHO MAKE BRIGHTON WHAT IT IS: NO.21 PAUL Seivewright & AMBRE FRANCE WORDS BY JAMES KENDALL & SOL BROWN PHOTO BY JAMES KENDALL

The Green Door Store owners opened their doors when everyone else was closing their, thank god. Was it scary seeing other venues closing when you were planning to open? Paul: Well, at the risk of sounding conceited, no. It reinforced in my mind what we were doing was right. Your Broken Brighton headline – that was in my mind as well. When we were planning this place it was obvious to me that this is what Brighton needed. Why has the Green Door Store been so successful? P: The venue, our musical programme, the staff that we have here, our programmer Ed Lilo – all that combined just works. And we don’t tell any lies – it is what it is. The club nights are free to get in; we’re looking for the newest music and the coolest music. Some of the music is quite challenging. P: Yeah. I sit down with Ed on a frequent basis and come up with some random ideas. He’s talking about skating indoors now and I’m like, no. We start with this stupid idea and it usually flourishes into something that is quite cool and works. But we’re open seven days a week, every week of the year and you can’t have all cool, all challenging. So we do have blues and jazz – regular kind of stuff – on a weekly basis because you need to pay the rent. The place has a really distinctive look – you told us once that if you had more money you’d have fucked it up. Ambre: I might have said that when I was drunk. P: Well, I think it’s true. If you’ve got lots of money then you’ve got lots of time, and with time comes doubt and with doubt you change your original ideas. We didn’t have time and we didn’t have any money. A: Some of the décor in there was down to me being quite nerdy. Like about exposing all the brickwork around the doorways. It pretty much took a week to get the paint off each doorway.

BBQ SHACK

THE PLACE

We’ve plugged this Grand Champion of the British BBQ Society’s Pitmasters Competition before, but it was at the Prince Albert when we first came across it. Since we’ve long mistrusted any promises of barbecue summers from our weathermen, an overcast July lunchtime seemed a good time to ignore the elements, head indoors and check out its relocation to the Worlds End.

From a menu that contains burritos and quesadillas as well as simpler meat and rice dishes, we plumped for the 14-hour pitsmoked sandwich options of hickory and apple-smoked North Carolina pulled pork, and chopped BBQ rib (both £5.95), plus potato wedges (£2.50). The pulled pork shoulder comes in a bun with crunchy coleslaw and a sweet apple BBQ sauce. We were worried this might detract from this promised meat revelation but it was so good we ended up bringing it home in a little pot. And the pork? You’d expect such a slow cooking process to make it tender, but really – nothing prepares you for how good it is. And they’re obviously proud of it; the bun positively groans with its fleshy filling. A crunchy side salad joins it on the plate; often an afterthought but here it’s got real bite. The BBQ rib is similarly good; ribs we’ve had before are a lot of sticky faffing about for little meaty reward, but the shredded slow-cook version in this bun is just as tender and just as good as the other dish; piled high and sauced to perfection.

THE VERDICT

Seriously good – tender, tasty and loads of it for the price. Barbecue food without losing your eyebrows? Makes perfect sense to us.

WERE WE SUSSED?

Only by the Argus’ food critic, who happened to be in there. We shared his only complaint – the portions were so big we couldn’t order two courses.

IN CONVERSATION WITH

BILL RANDALL GREEN COUNCIL LEADER LOVES PUNKABILLY, less keen on SUPERMARKETS

WORDS AND PHOTO BY JAMES KENDALL

It was shocking that Brighton & Hove had a Tory council for such a long time but, alongside our MP Caroline Lucas, Bill Randall is turning Brighton a vibrant shade of Green. We asked the new leader of the council about some of the Broken Brighton issues. Brighton & Hove now has a Green MP and a Green council. Did you ever thing this was possible? We thought we would do enough to at least be in a coalition this year. We did better than expected but it’s been hard work over a long time. And we think we caught a bit of the spirit of the city. Generally we’re a young party – I’m rather older than most of the people, both on the council and in the party – and we have a lot of people in our group who are interested in the music scene. If live music is important to Brighton what can the council do to support and protect it? First of all I think you need a range of venues, from the Brighton Centre right down to The Greys in my own ward where Jason of Jason & The Scorchers is playing this month. I’m certainly going – a bit of punkabilly, I’m rather fond of that. The other thing about venues is where they are. So there was the problem of The Freebutt, which I think was in the wrong place. I think the people running the venue’s intentions were good but it was impossible to square that circle. The Greys is right in Hanover but it’s not quite as loud. You do have to think of the greater good of the community around it. But certainly we encourage live music. But the Freebutt was a live venue long before the flats went up. Is what’s already there taken into account when planning permission is given? That is an issue, yes, but you have to make judgements. We also have a housing crisis in the city. And that Phoenix Brewery site was a big opportunity to provide some housing for people on limited incomes.

Page 42

One of the things that’s most interesting about the new Green council’s policies has been the encouragement of protesting. It’s not an encouragement, it’s a recognition that people have the right to protest, the right to peaceful protest. We’re acknowledging that and accommodating it where we need to. I can say too that the local police are, generally, very good on this. For instance there was the protest camp on the Steine. We were urged by some people to immediately call in bailiffs and throw the people off. But we negotiated with them and gave them a timescale and they went. There was no unpleasantness. Can anything be done about The Mound being a waste ground in the middle of town for 25 years? Or is it none of the council’s business? As a general principle, if land or buildings stay empty we should always try and find a temporary use for them. And there have been lots of good examples of that happening. We should always try and do it by agreement. I don’t know a lot about that particular space – I’ve read about it but it’s not in my ward so I haven’t actually dealt with it directly. I was more involved with the Lewes Road one which was hugely successful. What about the relentless march of the supermarkets? The gradual take over by large chains is something we don’t approve of. Brighton’s offer – what makes it different – is its small shops. We can’t stop supermarkets opening. We can refuse licensing for alcohol. Sainsbury’s just unsuccessfully appealed against a decision that they’d lost so the North Street Sainsbury hasn’t got an off licence. We can stop them in the North Laine because that’s a conservation area and you can’t knock several small shops together into one, which is a protection in itself.

BRIGHTON GIGS WORDS BY MATT BARKER, DAVID COURTNEY, ALLEN FOWLER, DAMIAN HARRIS, JAMES KENDALL, THE PERV

21st century Brighton is crawling with musical ghosts – Burger Kings and Sports Directs occupy airspace where rock history was once laid down in long-gone clubs and venues. Here’s a decade-by-decade exorcism from this issue’s interviewees, lest we forget.

1968: JIMI HENDRIX

Dome

Jimi Hendrix was huge in 68 – this was just before ‘Electric Ladyland’ but it wasn’t like he ever really played a set to plug any particular album. He played whatever he felt like playing, sometimes just one massive jam. Amen Corner, The Move, The Nice and The Pink Floyd were all on the bill, all for 7/6. Jimi just came out the back door afterwards with a couple of roadies, stuck the gear in the bus and hung around chatting with us. All very relaxed, no security. I’ve still got the whole band’s autographs framed on my wall. (AF)

1971: PINK FLOYD

Dome

This was before ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’, around the time of ‘Atom Heart Mother’ and ‘Meddle’ – I remember the amazing bassline to ‘One Of These Days’ that opens that album. They didn’t have the whole live extravaganza with the flying pigs and the special effects then – that was later on at Wembley, but I remember they’d rigged up a surround sound system. It was more about the music than the visuals but it was certainly very impressive, if you were into their music that was what carried you away. (DC)

1985: SONIC YOUTH

Zap

I saw a lot of great gigs in the 80s but the best would have to be Sonic Youth. The Zap wasn’t just a club then; it was a performance art place that did abstract things in the daytime and this was just one of them. I was one of about 40 people there. I just discovered it on YouTube, which was weird; you can see my black Mohican. You see people now going around in their Sonic Youth t-shirts and they don’t know what it’s about or who the band are, but I was there. (TP)

1997: LO-FIDELITY ALLSTARS Concorde

It’s hard to pick out a single Big Beat Boutique night but one in particular will always stay with me. I can’t remember the exact date, but it was definitely 1997. It was the first appearance at the club for The Lo-Fidelity Allstars and they were superb, encapsulating everything about the club in one performance. As they came off Norman Cook played ‘Rockerfeller Skank’ for the very first time off an acetate. Two minutes in, the whole club was singing along. (DH)

2005: LCD SOUNDSYSTEM

Concorde 2

“I was there…” sang James Murphy on the decade-defining indie-dance anthem ‘Losing My Edge’ – before reeling off boasts about being at the Paradise Garage, Suicide rehearsals, and the first Can show. All lies, of course, and we can imagine people making up being at one of the trio of LCD’s Brighton gigs in the future. Difficult to choose (Murphy’s bad mood at The Event, now Oceana, made the music so amazingly aggressive), but the ending of the second Concorde gig with ‘Yeah’ was as intense as live music gets. 2010: MIRRORS

New Hero

There’s a toss up between the satisfaction of finally seeing your idols play a greatest hits set, and seeing a band out of the blue that blows your mind. This was Mirrors’ first ever (public) show, and rumours of rucks at record label showcases only fuelled the intrigue. It was like a project cooked up for a scene set in my dream nightclub. Literally. I woke the next day with their tracks still fully formed in my head – the words, the melodies, but most importantly, the thrill. (MB)
