back in action
Did you miss us? Maybe, because every January we always have – after 14 years – messages of ‘Where are you?!’ Well, let’s be honest there’s not much to write about in the first month of Brighton’s year so we have the month off. But hopefully the SOURCE website kept you up to date, and entertained with the many, many reviews that were posted there. Now we’re back it’s business as usual – but with a few changes. We talked about ripping things up and starting again but, you know, we really like the magazine as it is right now. There are some changes, but they’re subtle enough that most of you won’t even notice. One thing that will never change is the editorial policy. Firstly we’re all about Brighton, so every interview is with a Brightonian, every gig and club night previewed happens in Brighton and every feature is about our city. The reason for this is that we want to be the best at what we do, and what we do is represent the community. And that leads us to the second strand of our ethics – honest positivity. We’ll never lie to you, but we won’t slag stuff off just for the fun of it. So, yeah, business as usual. Fingers crossed it’ll be another great year, if the Tories don’t destroy the country first.

Endless ends
Following the loss of Rounder last summer, HMV’s new year plunge into administration (a story still unfolding as SOURCE went to press) brought the difficulties facing high street record stores back into the public eye. Outside of Churchill Square there was more bad news for the indies after Endless Records in Kensington Gardens shut up shop last month, although they promise future pop up appearances in Fitzherberts. More positively, the city now has a unique triple deck of record shops at 104 Trafalgar Street, with Donga’s newly opened Well Rounded Vinyl Vendors sandwiched between Rarekind on the ground floor and d’n’b specialists RK Bass on the top. Finally, we’re pleased to report that, despite recent press rumours, Borderline Records owner Dave Minns has confirmed it’s still very much business as usual in his Gardner Street store
Bunker sale
Music institution Black Bunker Studios is up for sale. Situated down near St Peter’s Church, just about every Brighton band of note has passed through its doors over the past 15 years, from My Device to The Meow Meows, Medicine And Duty to The Mojo Fins (and plenty more not beginning with M). If you’ve ever fancied running your own studio, here’s your chance. Sussex firm Crickmay are handling the sale.
Magic piranhas
There’s even more reason to catch Sam McGarrigle, the local boy whose perfect pop procured twinkly reminiscences of Bolan and Ariel Pink from the Guardian, in a Green Door Store gig on Sun 17th. Under his moniker of Gross Magic, McGarrigle headlines a night featuring legendary 80s skapunk corkers The Piranhas and six other bands, with all profits from the tenner ticket price going to the Martlets Hospice and the Rockinghorse Children’s Charity, who help thousands of local people every year.

Right on arts
February is LGBT History Month across the UK, and this year Brighton helps celebrate with The B.Right.On Festival. Curated by artist and poet Vince Laws, the festival runs throughout the month, taking in exhibitions at Jubilee Library and the Town Hall, Queer Brighton tours, gigs, film screenings, theatre, music, conferences and performances. Festival info can be found on Vince’s website at vincelaws.com/brighton2013.htm
Honey closes
Having just mixed Ministry Of Sound’s ‘Clubbers Guide 2013’ album, Radio 1 Dance Anthem DJ Danny Howard plays The Honey Club’s closing down Vintage party on Sat 2nd. The Honey Club AKA The Honey was recently sold, and following its farewell blow out it’s due to undergo an extensive million pound refit. We’ll bring you news on the venue’s eventual re-emergence as a ‘VIP Superclub’ when we get it.
tobin back
Although electronic producer Amon Tobin long vacated our shores for the less sunny climes of Montreal, we still like to think of him as a local boy done good, with his breakthrough Ninja Tunes albums ‘Bricolage’, ‘Permutation’ and ‘Supermodified’ all recorded while resident in Brighton. Tobin returns to the coast next month with his ‘ISAM 2.0’ construction for a grand audiovisual concert at Bexhill’s De La Warr Pavilion on March 6th.
Buy a bevy
Following their local pub’s closure, Bevendean residents have formed a co-operative to get it up and running again. The Bevendean Arms – handily shortened to The Bevy – was closed in 2010 after problems with anti-social behaviour, leaving residents with nowhere to meet. Having bought shares in the building, they aim to reopen it as a co-operatively run, non-profit pub and community hub. For more information and help with fundraising, visit thebevy.co.uk

Nice Spot
Anyone seeking a decent mojito anywhere west of Churchill Square will know how badly Hove needs a quality cocktail bar. Thankfully, this month sees the opening of Nice Spot, quirkily located under an Indian restaurant on Church Road. Festooned with reel-to-reel recorders and paintings of rock icons, it’s run by Brightonian Dan Springford, who refreshingly promises “cocktails not costing the earth”, along with the promise of regular live music and DJ nights to follow.
Schmooze
Club night Schmooze has a new home at The Tube. Kicking off every Saturday night, resident DJs G23 and Lawrence Friend play the likes of Ms Dynamite, Devlin and P Money and promise guest DJ sets and live performances from big name artists. Schmooze delivers commercial dance music with sophisticated style at low cost student prices, perfect if one of your new year’s resolutions was to save more money.
Carnival Collective
Brighton’s 21st century big band kick off a new bi-monthly residency at The Blind Tiger on Fri 15th, with support from flamenco fusioneers Jardares Por Fuera and their own soundsystem DJs. If you don’t already know them, Carnival Collective are an eyeball-rattling explosion of jungle, ska, d’n’b, latin, breakbeat, reggae and funk, a 30-strong band that have torn up stages at Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Playgroup Festival and now down the pub too.
Screen Shack
The Temple Bar has started up a free film club, taking place in its upstairs room four times a month. Screen Shack offers fresh popcorn and shakes (including alcoholic shakes) to accompany your viewing pleasure, which this month includes The Wrestler, Senna, Raging Bull and Dogtown And Z-Boys. Screenings

traumfrau
alternate each Sunday and Thursday, and an optional £10 annual membership offers food and drink discounts. Doors open 6.30pm, with early punters getting their pick of the beanbags.
Traumfrau
Stepping up a gear for 2013, Traumfrau – ‘Dreamwoman’, thanks Google Translate – has a big new home at The Haunt. Since its launch last year, the alternative club night for queer girls and their friends has been steadily raising its game, notably bringing Le Tigre icon JD Samson to the Blind Tiger in the summer. Smart music choices and a strong DIY streak (who else holds ‘Cunt Craft’ workshops?) help Traumfrau stand out from the crowd. Next night is at The Haunt on Fri 22nd.
Bongo Fury!
Bongo Fury! is a free showcase from enthusiastic, exclamation mark friendly promoters Ooosh! Tours, taking place on the last Thursday of each month at Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar. February’s event brings Beatabet affiliated post rock trio Spacenoid along for a live, sampledelic set, while March brings over Irish multiinstrumentalist Fjorka. Bongo Fury! DJs fill out the night ‘til 3am, on the decks rather than the bongos. Ooosh! are calling it a social, so head down and be social with them.
Hush
Launching at the H Bar in Hove this month, Hush is a night aiming to bring back the feel of Brighton clubbing in the rave era. DJs for the inaugural Hush on Fri 8th include Laura May (Godskitchen, Dreamland), Hoopz and Gordon Darling, playing house, tech house, trance and classics, with admission just £2. Keeping things friendly and unpretentious, there’s no dress code so you can recycle your back-in-the-day club gear one more time if the mood strikes.

A DECADE after their last LP, gene’S singer RETURNS with a masterpiece Words By James Kendall Photo By Kenny Mc Cracken at Create Assisted By Matthew Ring and Lucy Beavis

Eighteen years ago this month Gene were on the cover of Melody Maker – and not for the last time that year. But their former singer has never been so acclaimed as he’s been for his debut solo album ‘The Defenestration Of St. Martin’, a set of stripped back torch songs featuring just his voice and a piano that falls somewhere between Morrissey’s heart-on-sleeve crooning and Nick Cave’s intense balladry.
excuse is for people who either can’t, or can’t be bothered to write words. “There was a slight sense of risk taking in the lyrics – a sense of ‘This is quite easy to mock,’” he admits. “I tend to like things that are quite easy to mock. I understand that as a miserablist I’m quite easy to mock. I’m never going to stand in front of everybody naked in real life, this is as close as I’ll get.”
Sales might not come close to the million records sold by Gene but critics adore the LP. The Guardian called it, “an unlikely but often brilliant comeback,” while in The Times Stewart Lee announced that we’d “lost a 20th century indie band to gain a 21st century solo artist.” Martin must be delighted, especially to see it appear in so many best of 2012 round ups.
The lyrics become so central to the album thanks to the bold choice of leaving the backing to only Martin’s piano playing. Written – like all his songs – sat at a keyboard, he gradually realised that it was “the process itself” that was making the songs better. Against the advice of his producer, who felt it would be impossible to hold people’s interest over a whole album, Martin decided to keep them stark and simple. “I think, even more than acoustic guitar and voice, piano and voice has the fewest hiding places,” he believes. “I genuinely feel I’ve never written anything as good and I think that’s been the response from most people. They appreciate the craft, the melody – all those things that people never talk about in the music industry. Hours and hours of work and love and care got put into every note – the honesty of them.”
“I am,” he says warmly, now out of his frozen cover shoot make-up. “Back in the 90s Gene were never press darlings. I lie – we were for about two weeks. It was curious because our first record came out within a week of Oasis’ first single. It was a zeitgeist shifting moment and we found ourselves on the wrong boat. So to have the amount of critical acclaim that I’ve now had is astonishing. For a few weeks I imagined I was Adele, which I’ve subsequently proved not to be.” It’s easy to see why everyone has fallen for this unconventional record. The opening minute, before Martin even opens his mouth, contains some of the most beautifully concise and emotional melodies to come out of Brighton for many years. As Gene fans will no doubt tell you, Martin is a pop craftsman, but now, concentrating on just two elements – voice and piano – he’s taken delicate control of every single note. It’s often said that pop is the most difficult music to master. Simplicity requires not a single misstep and on ‘The Defenestration of…’ Martin walks the tightrope softly and confidently. “The only thing I got from you is my name,” repeats the album’s most famous line, laying bare his feelings towards his estranged father. ‘Three Points On A Compass’ could be overwrought but, above beautiful, murmurating notes, Rossiter Jr gently hammers home one of the calmest character assassinations in musical history. It’s all the more powerful for not losing its temper throughout its never-less-than-captivating 10 minutes. “You broke my home/And I will never forget/All of the things you did,” it promises. Even if your parents are still in love it’s absolutely devastating. The rest of the album covers themes of loss, isolation and sex among others. It seems like there needed to be a bit of life lived to be able to make it. “Oh yes, I’ve lived,” he says. “To be honest I’m a fan of words in songs, things that aren’t necessarily particularly wordy. I’m a fan of sentiment but not sentimentality, and I want the truth from the records I listen to. I just wanted to live or die by it.”
Perhaps initially disappointingly for his old fans, there was never any chance of these first new songs in a decade being the basis of a new Gene album. Martin has been pretty outspoken about his contemporaries reforming (“Pulp, Blur… they can all fuck off to Butlins,” he told Sabotage Times) and is more than happy to tackle the subject again. “The Stone Roses was the one that upset me the most,” he says. “The only reason they’ve done it is money and I value pop music too much. It’s an art form that deserves better than just nostalgia. The fact that they’re playing in Qatar, happy to take that particular currency, I find saddening. They’ll happily go and play a show in a country where homosexuals are killed by the state. It hurts. It breaks my heart.” There’s been no such resting on past glories for Martin. When Gene stopped selling records he went out and got a job as a music teacher. Having worked alongside him we can only say that he’s as great in front of a class of teenagers as he is on stage. “I think in some people’s head there’s this myth of some splendid artistic isolation where I’ve been living on nothing more than carrots and mid-priced Cava,” he says. “It’s not the case – I went and got a job cos I didn’t have any money. I enjoy it. The healthiest thing is that you can live off your reputation for about 90 minutes. An 18 year old was born the year ‘For The Dead’ came out. They don’t care I was in a band. It’ll probably mean more being on the front cover of SOURCE than on Top Of The Pops.
Title aside, there’s little that’s wilfully obtuse about the album – it’s all there to soak in. ‘There’s no other explanation for this pain/I’ve been put on earth to suffer for no reason,” he says dramatically on the almost show tune-esque ‘I Must be Jesus’, while “Drop anchor with me/You’ve been at sea far too long,” pleads the soaring first single ‘Drop Anchor’. “I don’t want the songs to be mysterious at all,” he says. “I want the songs to be utterly understood. I want the same response from every listener. I loathe that, ‘Oh, we keep it deliberately vague’. That

As articulate, open and witty as you’d hope he’d be from his songs, Martin is damn near the perfect interviewee. “I enjoy interviews,” he admits. “For me singing on stage was secondary to going face to face with an interviewer. I remember our first interview with the NME – I was prepared, it was like going into combat. I enjoy the potential for violence that you get in an interview. I’d be so happy if you charged me with some sort of sense of fraud.” We just don’t think we can. He’s ALBUM: ‘The Defenestration Of St. Martin’ out now put himself into ‘The WEB: martinrossiter.co.uk Defenestration of…’ completely, VIDEO: ‘Drop Anchor’: tinyurl.com/DropAnchor so fully, that we can do nothing more than love it with all our heart.

Diagonal
Green Door Store Fri 1st
Rescheduled by one day and a matter of yards (in case you saw it advertised in last month’s SOURCE and got confused), Brighton’s Diagonal now bring their heady prog immersion to the Green Door Store, in the company of kosmische droners Eat Lights, Become Lights and the retinal pleasures of the Innerstrings Psychedelic Lightshow. Diagonal’s mix of heavy riffing and Hammer House Of Horror organ comes at you via hard rock connoisseurs Rise Above Records, a heavy stamp of quality. (SH)
King Dude
Blind Tiger Sat 2nd
Winter can be a bit of a dark, depressing time, so why not embrace it by checking out the gravelly, pagan-fuelled love songs of Seattle’s King Dude? Sounding like what would happen if Tom Waits sold his soul to the devil, King Dude’s take on those familiar themes of love, death and redemption will fulfill any desire to wallow in melancholy this month. Steeped in Americana and religious iconography, his post apocalyptic musical visions are both chilling and yet strangely uplifting. (AT)
Maria Minerva Green Door Store Tues 5th
Estonian born, global resident Maria Minerva is, so far, one of the few European artists to be picked up by LA’s smart, inspiring Not Not Fun/100% Silk axis. Combining her label’s late 70s/early 80s dance fetishism with a post-modern, academic intelligence, Minerva’s pop perspective is filtered through her Eastern Bloc upbringing, leading to a distinctive critique-come-celebration of transatlantic chart escapism. As titles like ‘Cabaret Cixous’ testify, it’s chillwave with a thesis, a vital step on from mere California dreaming. (SH)

Your Demise
Haunt Thurs 7th
Your Demise is one of the most promising local alternative bands around at the moment. Providing a mix of punk, metal and hardcore sounds which somehow work together they have a solid record touring with some big-name bands, so it’s nice to see they haven’t forgotten their roots. Don’t let the Dappy-esque outfits worn in some of their videos fool you, they’ve got plenty of tracks to jump around (or cripple your neck) to. (TT)
The Bronx
Concorde 2 Fri 8th
The last time The Bronx visited Brighton they played a packed show at Concorde 2 and an acoustic set in the Vans shop, both in the guise of their alter-ego Mariachi El Bronx. This time they return to their hardcore punk origins as part of a UK tour to promote their forthcoming album, simply entitled ‘The Bronx’ (just like the last three were). They bring with them Canadian indie punk noisemakers Single Mothers for their much anticipated overseas debut. (CB)
FAIRPORT CONVENTION St George’s Church Sat 9th
Trees blossom, crops grow, seasons rise and fall, and somewhere deep in England’s fields Fairport outlast them all. The folk rock pioneers have endured for over 45 years, with a list of acclaimed alumni as long as your arm. Singer-guitarist Simon Nichol has been there on and off from the start, with only long-serving bassist Dave Pegg putting in more time over the years. Still recording (or, in the case of last year’s celebratory ‘By Popular Request’, re-recording), never off the road, this show promises to be an intimate evening with Britain’s most credible 60s survivors (sit down, Jagger). SOURCE New Music Psychedelic Special Dome Studio Theatre Sat 16th
SOURCE’s monthly music showcase returns for 2013 with a heady five-band line up headlined by mind-shredding instrumental trio Physics House Band. Innerstrings Psychedelic Lightshow, whose optikinetic trickery lit up the Physics’ SOURCE cover last year, are bringing the visuals and co-curating tonight’s show, which also features cinematic prog group Baron, Adorable/Levitation pair Pete Fij & Terry Bickers, improv collective Reds and the sparse guitar pieces of Casey Denman’s Baal Fire project. Still only four quid. You’re welcome. (SH)
Calexico
Corn Exchange Tues 19th
On 2012’s ‘Algiers’, Calexico’s ninth album, the core duo of Joey Burns and John Convertino played to their strengths confidently, if softly. Live, the band are anything but subdued, swinging from Americana to rock and back again via the Mexican or, latterly, New Orleans influences they cherish. There’ll be horns aplenty, sure, but possibly the greatest thing about Calexico is the way they make ensemble performance look effortless, and they clearly still love it. (JKY)
the Robin Guthrie Trio Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Weds 20th
If shoegaze is your thing then there’s no better place for you this month than Sticky Mike’s. Cocteau Twins’ founder Robin Guthrie brings his new trio project to the UK for the first time, performing instrumental music and tracks from his new album ‘Fortune’. Support comes from floppy-haired pin-up of 90s teen dreams Mark Gardener, formerly of Ride, who’s also expected to collaborate with Guthrie tonight, and Brighton’s own shoegazers Bliss. (AT)

Lauded for their intense live shows, this a chance to see them before they go stratospheric. Support from Brighton’s own Dinosaur Jr-tinged Birdskulls make this an essential night. (BH)
Don Broco
Haunt Fri 22nd
It seems there really is no stopping the sheer force that is Don Broco. Having announced this tour off the back of their incredible debut ‘Priorities’, their London date sold out in just half an hour. The Bedford lads have even organised a second run of dates in April, including an appearance at the Concorde. So if you haven’t heard their alt rock anthems, complete with gutsy and boisterous vocals, you should be there. You will also bear witness to ‘the walk’ and other acts of onstage tomfoolery. (LH)
Mike Watt & Il Sogno Del Marinaio
Prince Albert Mon 25th
Dubbed one of the founding fathers of the US hardcore scene, Mike Watt is an alt-rock legend. As bass player of the seminal punk band Minutemen and then subsequently fIREHOSE, his influence on the post-punk and alternative scene has been huge. Taking time out from touring with The Stooges, Watt brings his Il Sogno Del Marinaio project (roughly translated as ‘the sailors dream’) to the intimate Albert, supporting their latest release ‘La Busta Guilla’. Caitlin Rose
Haunt Mon 25th
Nashville firecracker Caitlin Rose swaggers into town again with a maverick attitude to rival any of her male outlaw counterparts and a selection of songs designed to break your heart or bust your head. One minute she’s Patsy Cline reincarnated, the next she’s the person at the back who’s drunk too much and just wants everyone to be happy. Still in her early 20s, she’s a captivating performer who should transform the venue into a last chance saloon for country loving cowpokes. (SC)

If you spotted the gangly Elliot Gleave on the street you’d be forgiven for failing to place him as one of UK music’s biggest stars: a dead ringer for Will Self perhaps, or maybe a local housing officer, but not a rapper. Tonight, dubstep don Benga and hip hop boy wonder Sway lend quality support. (SH)

Haunt Thurs 28th
A free night of punk rock in the upstairs of a pub is something that can never be argued with, especially when homegrown talent like As We Sink are involved. Making a name for themselves with the digital release of their EP ‘Ventures’, As We Sink play catchy post-hardcore tinged punk in a similar vein to bands like Make Do And Mend and The Movielife. Also featured tonight are Brighton based River Jumpers, who will be loved by fans of Millencolin and Goldfinger. (CB)
LA duo Deap Vally are touring the UK this month, having been heavily tipped by the NME and stacks of music blogs – who back them like Donald Trump backs Republican candidates – for a big 2013. They play the same blues-based rock’n’roll once delivered by The White Stripes, only here the protagonists are two jeansshorts clad girls on the strings and sticks. Think Thelma & Louise with a Jimmy Page soundtrack. Apparently their live sets are what set off the buzz in the first place. Do. Not. Miss. (TR)

Ryan Hemsworth Life Fri 1st
Jazz Place Thurs 7th
Keen to make amends for cancelling their New Year’s Day afterparty, Critical Sound are back with another weighty drum’n’bass line-up. The night’s highlight is sure to be an old school set by Randall, but with label boss Kasra, Foreign Concept, ST, Lofty and others on the bill, it’s hard to pick. Meanwhile room two is hosted by Kung Fu. Preferring a deeper, more interesting side of drum’n’bass than that currently invading the pop world, Critical Sound can always be relied upon for a storming night. And morning. Probably not following afternoon. (JMM)
Everyone’s second favourite Canadian called Ryan, remix superhero and SoundCloud sage Hemsworth has featured on most ‘Ones To Watch’ lists we’ve seen in the past six months. He’s had no problems living up to the hype though, and in a time when the electronic music scene is swamped with glitchy, space-y samples he’s boldly leading where no man has gone before. We’re also looking forward to seeing Ninja Tune’s Slugabed and the Donky Pitch boys back at the Jazz Place, where their parties started. (JMM)

Thankfully not a night based on the Brad Pitt movie: getting presented with a box on the way out containing [spoiler alert!] your girlfriend’s head would really kick your comedown off with a bang. No, tonight sees underground house outfit Se7en travel down from London with their mates We Luv. It’s quite a crew – even before you count the busload of Londoners that come with them. Mark Radford from Audio Rehab and Rinse FM’s Dominique Danielle are leading a band of nine DJs. If the one last November was anything to go by it’ll go right off. They come to party. (JK)

Life Fri 8th
2012 was definitely Redlight’s year. Starting in January with the chart friendly banger ‘Get Out My Head’, he followed up with the huge ‘Lost In Your Love’, proving piano chords are still a winning element in dance music even after two decades. The Bristol producer hasn’t let commercial success phase him, he still plays a stomper of a set where sing-along sounds will be heard next to cochlea destroying bass music. Shed and Trus’Me are in support. (ZC)
Duke Dumont
Audio Fri 8th
There was a five year lull after his much hyped 2007 debut, but last year Duke Dumont was top of the blogs when he put out a delectable deep house bouncer called ‘The Giver’, and now the spotlight’s back on him. Pete Tong had him in the Radio 1 studios for an Essential Mix, his own productions have got props from Annie Mac, Toddla T and A-Trak and tonight he’s at Schtumm to prove that 2013 will be his year, for real this time. Kidnap Kid
Digital Sat 9th
Sheffield’s been responsible for putting out some talented artists, from The Human League to Arctic Monkeys, and the steel city’s most recent export Kidnap Kid is no exception. A deep house DJ whose sultry grooves have seen him remix the likes of Disclosure and The Other Tribe, Kidnap Kid’s pulsating beats and sensual basslines give the tunes a deft new touch. Tonight he’s supporting Jack Beats at Supercharged, so let your eardrums be taken ransom and the house sounds take control. (ZC)
Third Party
Coalition Sat 9th
Their last party rocked the roof off the Ministry Of Sound and now London’s Nightowl are back for a bi-monthly Coalition residency throughout 2013. Third Party are a pretty good way to launch that, having notched up some serious remixes – a euphoric version of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ ‘Otherside’ and an immense mix of ‘Save The World’ by the Swedish House Mafia for a kick off. Their post-electro/trance/bass singles for Steve Angello’s Size have given them another step up. Huge. (JK)
Killer Mike
Green Door Store Sun 10th
Hip hop works well in the bricked-out murk of the Green Door Store and US rapper Michael Render, aka Killer Mike, works hip hop hard. The long-time Outkast associate brings tracks from his most recent (and excellent), ‘R.A.P. Music’ album to the venue tonight, where producer El-P’s brutal synth-heavy beats and a highly charged political agenda will combine for something of a grass roots rap show. (JKY)

Plan B
Brighton Centre Mon 11th
Just when we were ready to write Plan B off completely on the back of those hugely irritating cider ads (take a chance on your mate’s band? We’d rather drink a pint of sick), he delivered with hardcore comeback single ‘Ill Manors’ and its wellreceived movie namesake. Forthcoming album ‘The Ballad Of Belmarsh’ promises to conclude the Strickland Banks story, so expect both storming hip hop and smooth soul tonight, and hopefully not a guest spot from Ray Winstone. (SH)
Hospitality
Digital Sat 16th
It’s always a special Hospitality when the label’s boss London Elektricity headlines. Tony Colman has an ear for liquid drum‘n’bass that’s unchallenged in the industry, frequently signing fresh talent to keep the label at the top of their game, as exemplified by Metrik – the science fiction loving new producer whose 2012 sets smashed it all over Europe. As if this night needed any more fire Nu:Logic – Logistics and Nu:Tone’s hybrid alias – join the party along with Fabio, who’ll add some classic jungle flavours into the mix. (ZC)
Waze & Odyssey
Audio Sat 16th
It’s easy to assume from their sound that Waze & Odyssey teleported in from mid-90s New York, carrying encyclopaedias of house and garage, hefting heavy record bags and sporting exclusive trainers. But actually one half, the lovely Serge Santiago, lived in Brighton for years and was a Stompa Phunk resident and Radio Slave member. Anyway, their classic, slick sound is perfectly of the moment and their mix for Dazed Digital will make you want to teleport back with them. (JMM)

We still listen to his Boiler Room set to remind ourselves how good the mix series from the micro-club can be. Ben UFO knows his way around a record bag, as his new Fabric mix shows, and he’s also no stranger to Brighton having wowed us at the seafront venues before. This time he shares deck duties with tech house stalwart Paul Woolford. Having previously played together on Rinse FM, resulting in a hugely popular mix, we can expect a proper back-toback set from the pair. (ZC)

Ejeca’s moniker may not ring any bells but his glistening underground house productions promise he’ll become a household name this year. Although his tracks are subtle and restrained they still pack a grooving punch, with warm basslines and shuffling percussion that stir up memories of 90s raves and the optimism of those summers of love, making him perfect to play at Warehouse. It’s free before 12 so get your names on their Facebook guestlist and move your feet to a soon-to-be young master of house music. (ZC)

He’s starred in both Come Dine With Me and a James Bond film, he’s Björk’s ex-boyfriend, and his real name is Clifford. There’s many reasons to love Goldie, but co-founding Metalheadz in 1994 is probably one of the better ones – this label’s drum’n’bass releases have been consistently strong. The night is headlined by the gold-toothed wonder, but the rest of the line-up is just as worthy, with Lenzman, Icicle, Doc Scott and others filling a fivehour, two-room extravaganza. (JMM)

There’s only one place to be when the new university term starts and that’s Coalition for the legendary Trash Mondays. What the students missed was that actually Trash was firing while they were away too. But January saw the seafront swamped by the queues to get in and once inside the revellers seemed intent on forgetting that actually they should have had a early night to be fresh for their exams. Comedy: Jerry Sadowitz
ART: 32 Paintings
A larger than usual venue for the maverick comedian who can almost always offend some misguided punter’s sensibilities so greatly that they will walk out. More complex than his rich TV copycats could ever be, Sadowitz recently appeared in Kathy Burke’s teenage drama Walking And Talking and is easily one this country’s greatest close up magicians. His stage persona can be truly terrifying, with the tricks providing brief respite, and he holds no cow sacred so prepare for a night you’ll either love or hate. (SC)
Who still drinks cider and black? Who thought making the bus announcements sound like the Underground wouldn’t sound ridiculous? And what have a fine survey of contemporary painters in Brighton been up to recently? At least one of these questions will be answered in this diverse exhibition of local practitioners. A variety of techniques and approaches will be showcased, and the overall idea is to contemplate the hidden secrets behind virtuosity and the relevance of the medium to contemporary art. (BM)

Matt Stuart’s carefully shot images of urban London demonstrate his unique take on the world around him. Fleeting coincidences are captured deftly and momentary images caught perfectly on time. These monthly discussions are always an interesting way to spend an evening. They’ve become the focus of the Brighton photo scene and not just because they’re free. (JMM)

If you want to know anything about genetics, Adam Rutherford is your man. Trained at University College London, he’s from the same mould of friendly geeks as chortler Robin Ince, curly malcontent Ben Goldacre and angular heartthrob Brian Cox, presenting The Gene Code – examining how decoding genetics will affect humanity – and a documentary on our body’s cells on BBC4. This appearance precedes his first book, Creation, which will contemplate synthetic biology and the origins of life when it arrives in April. (BM)

The critic who said Rob Auton is a comedian you won’t forget was almost certainly right, because a show based entirely around the colour yellow sounds pretty singular. Describing himself as a Turkish Prince, Naz Osmanoglu has drawn tickled reviews for his high-tempo Ottoman Without An Empire show. And, as usual, they’re only a couple we could mention from a programme busier than a sexually-frustrated parking warden in Kemp Town up in the Three And Ten cavern this month. (BM)

THEATRE: Heartfelt Dome Weds 13th – Sat 16th
Valentine’s Day is so much more than a poundshop card and a double pineapple and cheese at Grubbs. In this mini-season, under the banner of Heartfelt, contemporary Russian playwright Ivan Viripaev celebrates love in his English language debut Illusions (13th). The Dome and Brighton Museum throw a Valentine’s party (14th), before Stuart Bowden plays one-man, ukulele-looping show The Beast (15th). Site-specific theatre maker Geraldine Pilgrim then performs a new piece, Handbag, working with local performers under a mirrorball groove. (BM)

In the spirit of keeping things topical for those not totally indifferent to the notion of designating romance to a single day, here’s another date for the 14th. Cherubic Scottish arena dweller Daniel Sloss and comedy rock band Rayguns Look Real Enough limber promisingly. (BM)

Even if you’re not currently courting this is still an evening you can comfortably go to with your friends. (SH)

Blandy is running an open studio as artist-in-residence for the Science Fest, a trip to which sounds slightly intimidating unless you’re familiar with his unimposing personality. His plans for the month include turning an ancient sea voyage into a space odyssey. (BM)
DANCE: Les Ballets Trockadero De Monte Carlo Dome Fri 15th – Sat 16th
The Trocks – all male dancers, clad thick in make-up, hips wrapped in tutus, eyelashes fluttering and glimmering – have a new show: Les Sylphides, Pas De Deux, La Vivandière and Walpurgis Night. Promising news for those sensing their knowing snook on the genre was wearing slightly thin in recent years, although it could be said that they solicited such accusations by dint of being brilliant, harrumphing the stuffy trepidation some feel towards ballet in favour of high comedy and gleeful dance. Neue Froth Kunsthalle from Sat 16th
Described as small, dark, intimate and erotic (sounds like the SOURCE culture department’s kitchen), the nomadic Kunsthalle gallery has pitched up on Queens Road for a series of three asterisktitled exhibitions, of which this is the second. Linking up with some big-name London galleries, the line-up looks exciting: sculptor Phyllida Barlow and Mimei Thompson, who’s been known to create visions of floating psychedelic worlds for the Contemporary Art Society, are among those united by curators Kate Lyddon and Alex Bowen. THEATRE: How To Disappear Completely And Never Be Found New Venture Theatre from Sat 23rd
No, not the Radiohead soundtrack to lying comatose on your bed wondering if life can possibly get any grimmer, but a play about an executive in crisis who loses sight of everything he knew via a Sarfend fortune teller and a pathologist’s slab. Having published it in 2005, playwright Finn Kennedy won a prestigious Arts Council award for the script before it had even been performed - the first play in 40 years to do so, boding well for New Venture. have him take our photo that we’ll go to such lengths? Well, his portraits are thoughtful, sometimes glamorous, frequently beautiful and always revealing a layer below the surface. No wonder they’ve ended up in the National Portrait Gallery collection and on the Taylor Wessing Prize shortlist.

If you haven’t noticed his name next to portraits of Paul McCartney, Gwyneth Paltrow and Bat For Lashes, or on shoots for the likes of The New Yorker, Guardian Weekend and Agent Provocateur, then you might have clocked it on the acres of press attention his Twitter-based 140 Characters project – showing at Create at the same time – received. He photographed 140 of his closest friends on the social network, people he’d never met but spent more time with than his ‘real’ friends. Lily Allen, Caitlin Moran and Brighton music journalist Alexis Petridis (above) were just a few who took part.
When one of our favourite photographers tweeted that he was doing a portrait session up at Leeds’ amazing White Cloth Gallery we messaged back that we wished it was closer. nick cave & the bad seeds
Album: Sea Monsters 3
Album: Alice Russell
Released to coincide with last month’s seven-night celebration of Brighton’s best bands, this compilation is a musical treasure trove. If you made it to any of the gigs in January (read our reviews online) you’ll already know how diverse, interesting and unpredictable this CD will be: its only criterion for inclusion is good music from Brighton, with scant regard for genre, style or production technique. We particularly recommend cello mistress Abi Wade, DA-10’s glittering collaboration with Us Baby Bear Bones and Traams’ breakneck garage. (JMM)
Following her winning collaboration with Quantic on last year’s ‘Look Around The Corner’ comes ‘To Dust’, soul singer Alice Russell’s fifth solo album. Produced as always by longtime partner TM Juke, lead single ‘Heartbreaker’ is a languid soul ballad, broken up by stuttering snare fills and a deep Hammond solo. Elsewhere, Russell varies the organic mood with head nodding house (‘For A While’), liquid grooves (‘A To Z’) and lush disco loops (‘Different’). Another wonderfully classy affair. (SH)
(One Inch Badge)
‘To Dust’ (Tru Thoughts)
Album: Esben & The Witch
EP: Grasshopper
Dispensing with some of the overt gothic tones of their ‘Violet Cries’ debut, the second album from rock dramatists Esben & The Witch thunders in with the skyscraping massed guitars of ‘Iceland Spar’ (a tribute to their two favourite supermarkets). It’s a long, lyrical journey into the night from thereon, shadows in the trees and clouds rolling in as the trio weave subtle electronics deep into the mix for a powerful, often claustrophobic listen. Sleep tight, morning’s never going to come. (SH)
Neat little debut four-tracker from school-age boy/girl quartet Grasshopper, who are worryingly confident for a band so young. Opener ‘You Are The One’ brings tumbledown guitar riffs and bouncy drums, while the sort-of epic ‘Collide’ growls along with grumbling bass and scatterings of glockenspiel. There’s some endearing, inevitable naivety at work in the fumbling structures and Javi Fedrick’s wavering vocals, but Grasshopper’s open-minded instrumentation and DIY approach (pretty badge, lovely hand-sprayed sleeve) point to a bright future. (SH)
‘Wash The Sins Not Only The Face’ (Matador)
Album: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
‘Push The Sky Away’ (Bad Seed)
The Bad Seeds’ first album since 2008’s rollicking ‘Dig, Lazurus, Dig!!!’ finds Cave and company back in ballad mode, the last few years of Grinderman activity seemingly expelling much of their pent-up mid-life aggression. ‘Jubilee Street’’s orchestral grandeur is pricked by the line about “love in my tummy”, while references to Hannah Montana (‘Higgs Boson Blues’) and the juvenile couplets of ‘Mermaids’ further suggest Cave’s having fun puncturing his serious public persona. A fascinating, selfreferential puzzle of a record. (SH)
Page 30
‘Grasshopper’ (soundcloud.com/musicgrasshopper)
EP: Tinheart
‘tiNhearteD’ (Sad Sentry)
tiNhearT is the solo project of Piers Blewett, frontman of folkpop group Stick In A Pot, and, following a handful of covers, ‘tiNhearteD’ is his debut proper. tiNhearT’s music isn’t far removed from Blewett’s other band at all, his already gentle fingerpicked song constructions stripped further back to tightly strung strings, keyboard ripples and airy vocals. Tunes like ‘maybE’ and ‘sicK sicK’ (enough messing with our caps keys already) are breezy, sweet and soft centered. Low key but very lovely. (SH)

STREET STYLE wordS BY Hayley Simpson Photo by lomokev at lomokev.com/style
Who needs print and colour to stand out on a bleak winter day when monochrome, done well, can look just as rebelliously chic? Jenna, who runs excellent leftfield 80s pop and goth club night Spellbound (at the Komedia on Saturday 16th), is a perfect example of how fashion and music go hand in hand. “Just like I love all different music from sixties to glam rock to alternative 80s, my style is a combination of late 20s/early 30s and late 60s/early 70s psychedelic stuff.” Studying Fashion and Dress History at Brighton University may be another reason she can’t quite be defined by just one decade. From her 1920s Clara Bow bob to her love of iconic British label Biba, Jenna is testament to the fact that vintage – and by that we mean proper vintage – will always be timeless. Hat and coat from Beyond Retro “These are probably the only two things I’ve ever bought from Beyond Retro. One day I found the coat and I got the hat a week later because I just had to have a Russian hat to match with the Russian princess style of the coat.” Bag from Kate & Aud “Kate & Aud is a vintage boutique on Trafalgar Street. I generally shop in vintage shops in Brighton or online. I spend quite a lot of money on vintage just because I find it’s worth it. The fabrics and the cut are always better quality.” Boots from British Heart Foundation “With 60s style boots it’s really hard to find the right kind of heel and the right kind of toe. They’re always either pointed or a stiletto so when I found these I thought they were absolutely perfect.”

UNSUNG HERO
100 people who make brighton what it is No.37 Matt Bassant Words By James Kendall Photo By Freshtodeath.com
Under the watchful eye of Promotions Manager Matt Bassant, Audio has become the place to see upcoming house DJs. What do you do? My job basically entails the promotion of the business overall, all the way down from booking the artists, bands and DJs, to the designing of the artwork, liaising with student promoters, getting other club nights and record labels in, overseeing the distribution of the print, flyers and design, and everything like that. Wow, that’ll keep you busy. Audio has a really good cohesive music policy, especially at the weekend. I think it’s really beneficial to have a weekly Saturday night where people know what they’re gonna get. You know that downstairs you’re going to get house music, even though that’s adapted and changed over time. You’re not going to see Carl Cox on a Saturday night down there but you’re going to see good, upcoming, young UK house acts. You’re great at spotting people just before they break. How do you find your DJs? Like anything it’s research, keeping your ear to the ground. Julio Bashmore’s first Brighton gig was at Audio. Eats Everything haven’t played any other Brighton venues which is testament to how much they like Audio. You have some great residents like Blah Blah Blah and Neal Schtumm, and Maxxi Soundsystem plays a lot. We’ve had to be really strict on it. I’m not saying it’s impossible to get a gig at Audio but we have fewer residents than other weekly nights. It’s because we want to keep that quality in that music policy. I’m there every Saturday, keeping my eye on them. House music has come back in such a massive way. Is it a healthy scene? House is at a strange point now where it’s becoming so commercial. The kids that are listening to it now probably weren’t listening to it two or three years ago and you’re getting a case where people are releasing one or two tunes and getting really big. It’s kinda what happened with dubstep – everyone started charging such massive fees that no one booked the acts. I hope that doesn’t happen with house because that’s the sound I enjoy.

THE PLACE Japanese food can be incredible, but unless you get the good stuff – which can be pricy – it pretty much tastes of nothing. As anyone who has seen the excellent Jiro Dreams Of Sushi will tell you, there’s a lot of love and an intense attention to detail that goes into what can appear to be a simple food. You’re not going to get that from drones working in a Tesco sushi factory. There’s a tendency for sushi joints to be flashy but there’s little shiny about E-Kagen, based above oriental supermarket Yum Yum. In fact it’s – we have to say – a little drab. THE MEAL After going back and forth through the sizable menu we decide
to start with mixed sashimi, sushi and gyoza. The dumplings (£5) are astounding, having been fried slightly to take that sludginess away. They’re full of flavoursome pork. The sushi is just as good. From a large selection we choose sea bass and ginger (£4) which is fresh, lively with a zing. You can really taste every component. Raw fish can be hit and miss but the sashimi (£8) doesn’t let the side down, with thick slices of tuna, salmon, sea bass and squid, all of which taste different and you can’t always say that. When you get a chance to eat eel you really ought to give it a whirl and the una-don (£8) doesn’t disappoint, being rich and tender in a toasted sesame seed sauce that gives a woody edge. The katsu curry (£8.50) is large with plenty of gravy and a sizable crispy chicken cutlet. It’s as warm tasting and easy going as you’d hope of the dish. THE VERDICT This is like those places you find on holiday and then come back raving that “It doesn’t look like much but the food is amazing!” E-Kagen clearly put their every effort onto the plate. Amongst the best Japanese food we’ve had in Brighton – the gyoza were certainly the best – every item screamed its own flavour. Real food, great ingredients, beautifully presented. WERE WE SUSSED? Well, it wasn’t very busy, and there’s an open kitchen, but we don’t think it’s unusual to the Japanese to take photos of their food. We’re gonna say we got away with it.

In Conversation With
Brighton Science Festival
They fucking love science too Words by Stuart Huggett Photo by james kendall
richard robinson
Sex, zombies and the paranormal are among the subjects under discussion at this year’s Brighton Science Festival, with guests including Robin Ince, Ben Goldacre and Belle de Jour (aka Dr Brooke Magnanti) in town for the month. Festival director Richard Robinson talks to us about science, magic, religion and ukuleles. There seems to be a lot of popular science on the TV currently. Why now? Richard Robinson: Well we can get very complacent about science. We buy a thing like an iPhone, and it’s fantastic what goes on inside there, but we just take it for granted. It doesn’t last for long and we throw it away and buy a new one. We don’t worry about who built it, miles away in China or Korea, whereas in the developing world they’re very keen on this new and exciting stuff. Newness and excitement has rather left us so it’s our task to keep refilling the pot. I think the reason why Dara Ó Briain has confessed to being a scientist, and Ben Miller and other comedians with science degrees behind them, is because we’re aware of that problem of taking things for granted, we spotted it years ago.
How receptive are people to new scientific concepts? RR: You start by having people looking at you in a weird way. It can take years. For instance, Darwin had quite an original idea and he spent 40 years not publishing because he was scared. He knew what he was saying, he knew that it was a game changing idea, so he knew that if he was going to publish he had to be very sure, have thorough proof and proper experiments, so nobody could say you must be mad. Most of the planet still do think he’s mad. I mean Richard Dawkins is Darwin’s bloodhound, hunting down anybody who’s not absolutely 100% atheist, who doesn’t think that we’re just a random collection of molecules on a damp pebble floating through the infinity of nothing.
“It’s mayhem and madness, hot glue spraying all over the place”
How does the festival engage with young people? RR: It’s a big challenge and we’re tackling that one with White Heat weekend (Sallis Benney Theatre, Sat 23rd & Sun 24th). The first day is mainly talks and the second is absolutely no talks at all, it’s mayhem and madness, hot glue spraying all over the place, soldering irons poking in people’s eyes, boiling water to keep them alert. We’ve got talks on things like monsters and skateboarding, but every one of those is like a worm on a hook, and the hook is the science that goes behind it. It’s curated by the Festival Of The Spoken Nerd who are delightful. One of them plays the ukulele so I think we might have a reduction if you’ve got a ukulele. I know one or two people have got some science songs so maybe we’ll have a singalonga-science.
Have you seen sites like Facebook’s ‘I Fucking Love Science’? RR: Well I’m getting beaten over the head about it, people say to me you’ve got to get into Facebook and Twitter – well I did tweet once last year and I didn’t feel any better for it. I don’t have any followers so it’s possible I don’t exist actually, you might be talking to an illusion. But no, ‘I Fucking Love Science’ is a good one and there are a number of very good websites, pub tricks and pub magic things, Steve Spangler in America, Grand Illusions. There’s plenty there and you can just do the tricks to impress your friends and neighbours or you can say “And WEB: brightonscience.com the reason why is...” and watch them WHEN: Weds 6th Feb-Sun 3rd Mar run out of the room. It reinforces the science behind it.
There’s a lot of ukes about these days. RR: Yes, I keep on seeing them on people’s shelves. They’re like a virus. You get a little one and then as soon as it’s the right moment they become infectious. Everybody will be afflicted by ukulele.

6 of the Best
Coffee Shops Words by alex evans photo by victor FraNkowski
When there are so many great independent cafés in Brighton why would anyone bother with Starbucks – a company that resolutely refuses to support their own austerity-suffering customers by paying their fair share of tax? We can only assume that it’s option paralysis – people just don’t know where to start. So we asked Alex Evans, author of The Independent Coffee Book, a man who really knows his beans. Here are six recommendations from him, to see you straight. Just don’t ask for a Venti.
Coffee@33
Trafalgar St
Inspired by several of London’s premier cafés, with its pared back design and consistently great offerings, 33 was one of the very first cafés in Brighton to take on the mantle of speciality coffee purveyors and have shouldered that responsibility admirably ever since. Co-owner Taras is as friendly and knowledgeable a head barista as you’ll find and has recently added Blake by Has Bean as a guest espresso alongside the long standing Monmouth blend. This minimalist café rightly continues to crop up on the radar of those who know and love their coffee.
Ground
St. George’s Rd
A café built on its owners’ love of coffee, Ground serves up the best espresso and teas in the east of Brighton. For this reason it can get pretty busy at lunchtimes but fear not – the baristas here are amongst the best in the city and turn out drinks of a consistently high calibre. A tranquil space, good tunes, tasty sandwiches, fine teas and with a healthy ethos towards all of the coffee and produce they offer – it’s everything a café should be.
Small Batch Coffee Co. Jubilee St
Currently the newest and most stylish of Small Batch’s growing number of locations, the Jubilee Street café – housed on the ground floor of My Hotel in the centre of the North Laine – is the first in the city to offer a syphon bar, so if you’re into the theatre and spectacle of brewed coffee then this is the place for you. Their coffee offering is changed regularly to showcase new micro-lots and single origins from around the world. Look out for a new Small Batch opening at Seven Dials very soon.
Page 46
mr wolfe
Marwood
Ship St
Mr Wolfe
Montpelier Pl
You won’t find another coffee shop like this anywhere. Marwood represents many of the more positive elements that Brighton is noted for, with a strong community feel and creative lean that has developed over the three years since it first opened its doors. The space is a mash-up of humourous, donated or found items which lend the café an ever-changing personal history that can’t be replicated. Now also serving a range of substantial breakfast and lunch options to go with the coffee and ‘life changing cake’, Marwood is as friendly and jovial a café as you’re ever likely to find.
Serving organic Monmouth espresso and a selection of some of the very best home-made cakes and savouries anywhere in the city, Mr Wolfe is a relative newcomer to Brighton’s coffee scene but you wouldn’t know it. Owners Travis and Kat are Melbournites with a keen eye for beautiful design and the finer details, skills which really shine through in this stylish, diminutive coffee shop. Away from the crowds of Churchill Square or the abysmal café chains on Western Road, this is a haven of calm that has fast become a mustvisit for locals and coffee tourists alike.
Redroaster
St. James’s St
The incumbent Redroaster, now in its 13th year, is Brighton’s longest running speciality coffee shop and whilst it’s not the prettiest café space in the city, its popularity shows no sign of abating. This is due in no small part to the fine list of coffees on sale, often featuring Cup Of Excellence lots which are hand roasted at their roastery in Kemptown. A mainstay of the city’s café culture, Redroaster also carries the flag for Brighton’s growing number of fiercely independent coffee shops, having stared down the much maligned Starbucks across St. James’s street for some time. Long may it continue.
A new edition of the Independent Coffee Book: Brighton & Hove is coming very soon. See vespertinepress.co.uk for their full list of titles.
