doomtown?

For some reason it’s customary to talk about what’s in the magazine you’re reading in this kind of editor’s letter. “Welcome to the new edition of [X]! This month we’ve got nothing to say! Again!” – you know the sort of thing. Well, if you want to know about this month’s issue, turn a few pages and find out for yourself – you’re all clever people. Because we want to talk about next month’s magazine. By the time you find August’s SOURCE it will be exactly one year on from our Broken Brighton special and we want your help. If you’ve addled your brains with too much partying you maybe won’t recall that things looked pretty dire. Venues were closing, supermarkets were popping up everywhere and it looked like the only place you could get a coffee was going to be CostaBucks. So we thought it would be a good idea to see whether the doom and gloom was worthy of our concern or just a blip in our utopia. Email us on james@ brightonsource.co.uk and tell us what you think of the new council, the new venues, the hopes and the dangers to the culture of the city. Give Brighton one of those SWOT analysis things that your manager makes you do when you forget to pretend to be working.

NEWS

WORDS BY NICK COQUET, JAMES KENDALL, JESSICA MARSHALL MCHATTIE

KENNY HAWKES RIP

It’s with heavy hearts that we report the news of underground house music legend Kenny Hawkes’ passing at just 43 years old. The Brighton born and bred DJ made his name with the London pirate station Girls FM which, under his management, attracted a million listeners a month. He had similar success with the midweek deep house night Space, a cornerstone of the UK scene, and had a brace of classic productions to his name. Whenever we saw him he was always on his way to play in a far-flung corner of the world. We’ll miss him greatly.

HIP HOPS

We were expecting the Brighton Beer Festival to have, y’know, good beer, but what we weren’t expecting was a proper lineup of bands too. Really living up to the festival part of the name, the team have drafted in The Blockheads, Dodgy, The Grits and the ever-popular Brighton Beach Boys to headline the four days, working in some local talent from the likes of Villareal, Jouis and electro swing newcomers Kitten & The Hip. Tickets are a tenner a day – including your first drink free – and as you might expect they’re selling like cold beers on a hot day. It’s all happening at The Old Paddling Pool by the West Pier from Thursday 14th to Sunday 17th.

ART UNDERGROUND

Handmade Brighton on St James’s Street has been around for a year or so now, working as a non-profit retail space that lines artists’ pockets with well-earned dough. Now they’re opening up their basement space for talks and workshops, as well as exhibition space for emerging artists trying out work in a public arena for the first time. July sees Angela Chick’s Once Upon A Time exhibition of illustrations, written word and textiles kicking off the new space – go check it out.

TO INFINITY & BEYOND

Infinity Foods has been part of the Brighton landscape for 40 years, and at their current North Laine location since 1973. To celebrate four decades of ethical and organic grub they’re

throwing an al fresco party on Saturday 2nd, in Jubilee Street outside the library. Attendees can enjoy rummaging through a food market from local suppliers and live entertainment going on all day. Infinityfoodsretail.co.uk has the latest.

UNSINKABLE FUN

Paddle Round The Pier, Europe’s biggest free beach and watersports festival, is back for its annual outing on Hove Lawns on the weekend of 2nd/3rd. It’s a mix of music, stalls, a load of kids’ activities and have-a-go sporting opportunities all hinged around the legendary race of buoyant bathtubs, rafts and other variously seaworthy craft. The music tent features an array of local talent that’s always worth checking out, this year including Ben Poole, Derriere and Jim Stapley, and the rest of the fest is a great day out in the sun.

GENEROUS JOURNEY

The Martlets Hospice in Hove provides free care to its patients, which costs over £9,000 a day to achieve. Your mum or someone might need it one day, so get some credit in your karma bank by taking part in their midnight London to Brighton bike ride on September 2nd and get a load of people to sponsor you while you’re at it. No traffic on the roads, stops for coffee and cake before arriving in Brighton for breakfast – and overall it’s obviously a downhill ride. Themartlets.org.uk awaits your registration page impression.

KEEP BALL UP, BOOZE DOWN

The UK footvolley championships are coming to Brighton beach on Saturday 9th – it’s like volleyball but for use you feet instead of hands for hoiking the ball over the net. Football folk from sunnier climes like Ronaldo and Edinho are known to be all about the sport in keeping limber for their day jobs. Barefoot Wine are sponsoring the event and we’re told they’re offering free foot massages while you sip their delicious booze products; you can also compete in keepy-up contests for wine and merch-based prizes. You can’t go wrong.

The earthship

RIKI TIK

Riki Tik is having a complete reboot – not just with a new soundsystem, new lights and a complete change in line-up, but a new concept too. The back section is having all the seats ripped out and being turned into an intimate club with free entry every night. The Teen Creeps lads are doing an electro boogie Thursday called Das Club Robotique. Fridays will be Eclectric, boasting future garage, broken beat and more varieties of house than you’d find on Rightmove, while AKAAKAROAR and Sneaker Social Club will make an appearance, as will free cinema and popcorn on Sundays.

STICKY MIKE’S NIGHTS

We had the news that it was all change at Jam last month and now we can fill you in on the new nights. No space to waste, so here goes. There’s new Madchester night Loose Fit and a Brighton debut for Simon Price’s legendary London indie night Stay Beautiful. Ace girl group night Da Doo Ron Ron is moving over from the Komedia, Warhol-esque self-DJing phenomenon Stick It On will make a showing and there’s at least one return for Dynamite Boogaloo. It’s shaping up to be a really fun lineup, a real rebirth for the venue.

SUB BOP

Friday 15th at the Green Door Store sees the launch of a deliciously scuzzy new night playing riot grrrl, shoegaze and grunge. Sub Bop promises tunes by Sonic Youth, Soundgarden, Black Flag, Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and many others whose names adorned the sweat-soaked t-shirts of our misspent youth. It’s on from 11-4am and it’s free all night to get in and get down.

BOYLESQUE

Burlesque isn’t just size 14 women in size 10 underwear titting about with a feather boa – now fellas can get involved as well. The Brighton Institute Of Boylesque is running a workshop

course at the Marlborough on Saturdays 2nd, 16th and 30th culminating in a performance in the Little Theatre. It works out at 15 hours of tuition for just £55, which seems cool. The tutors are members of probably the only all-male burlesque troupe, Der Wunderlich Revue, so they should know their stuff. Call Adriano on 07968 249870.

LOVESICK

Lovesick Recordings has been founded by Brighton producers Riskotheque, Marchmellow and Southbound Hangers who want to put out more mouth-watering bass music, and they’ve already got a bevy of releases lined up. The pigeonholes of dubstep, deep house, techno and old school garage don’t quite do these guys credit – their productions are as diverse as love’s definition, so get down to Digital on the 9th for Hospitality where they’re taking over the second room. There you can hear the Lovesick sounds, from emptiness to ecstasy via blind infatuation, all for yourself.

ONLY IN BRIGHTON

Having proved a hit during the Fringe, this street tour is becoming a permanent fixture offering an irreverent guide to our city for nosey tourists and locals alike. It’s 80 minutes of gays, greens, starlings, celebrities and more for just £7 – no booking necessary, just hang about outside the station on Fridays at 7pm and learn a load of new stuff you can impress/ bore your friends with. Onlyinbrighton.co.uk has more info.

THE EARTHSHIP

At the back of Stanmer Park sits a hidden eco gem in the shape of the Earthship, a green-friendly building made of mud and car tyres that harnesses the various elements to produce off-Grid energy all year round. It’s the Low Carbon Trust’s first Earthship build and it’s available for private hire as an alternative to some dull municipal hall, as well as informative tours, the next of which is Sunday 3rd. Get in touch at info@earthshipbrighton.com.

GIG PREVIEWS WORDS BY CHRIS BIGGS, IAN CHAMBERS, JAKE CUNNINGHAM, BEN GILBERT, STUART HUGGETT, JESSICA MARSHALL MCHATTIE

HERE & NOW TOUR Brighton Centre Sat 2nd

Hyped as ‘the very best of the 80s’, this 10th anniversary tour makes some big claims. Does the world grow misty-eyed at an era shaped by the likes of Pepsi & Shirlie, Jimmy Somerville and Jason Donovan? Or is this further evidence that our march into nostalgia’s deepest sludge knows no bounds? How about a Ferris Bueller’s Day Off re-run, with an interval scored by New Order as Madonna serves lollies in her ‘Like A Virgin’ wedding dress instead? Now that would be rad. (BG)

VILLAGERS

Komedia Sat 2nd

Villagers have been supporting Elbow on their recent UK tour, and they’ll be back on the road later in the year as well as doing a host of festivals, but catch them more intimately now as they’re going to be getting bigger and bigger. Having won the Ivor Novello award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically for the beautiful ‘Becoming A Jackal’, their dark, acoustic hymns are comparable to the likes of Bright Eyes and Sparklehorse and they’re definitely a band to be keeping an eye on. (JC)

WOODEN WAND Green Door Store Sat 2nd

Hailing from Kentucky, Wooden Wand is the moniker of singersongwriter James Jackson Toth, whose prolific output of dark folk and dusty country is placed nicely somewhere between Dylan, Bonnie Prince Billy and Nick Cave. His most recent album ‘Death Seat’, released late last year on the Young God label, featured members of Lambchop and Woods, and with this being one of only three UK dates it’s sure to be a pretty special show. Plus to cap things off nicely, support comes in the form of a rare solo performance from Lucky Jim. (IC)

EELS

Dome Weds 6th

Eels’ frontman E was synthesised in a Californian hippy commune alongside his friends Meth and Acid. Originally intended as an amorphous substance spanning the universe, fused with all the lights and colours of the rainbow and the emotional horsepower to end war and put politics into a well lush room full of crazy lights and nice vibes, a music career has rather railroaded such extraordinary aims. Happily, he’s well loved in Brighton and will probably go down very well tonight and until the end of time. Amen to that. (BG)

DEAD ROCK WEST Hope Weds 6th

Back in the UK promoting their new stunning new album ‘Bright Morning Stars’, Californian four-piece Dead Rock West play a harmony-filled blend of rootsy alt.country and jangly power pop, like a cross between the Flying Burrito Brothers and early-era Wilco. Support comes from impressive local country rock band Robbie Skitmore & The Spanish Harlem Incident. (IC)

TRIBES

Prince Albert Weds 6th

Indie rock. Boys with guitars. Camden. The Next Big Thing. If any of these phrases appeal to you, then head up to the Albert tonight before “Tribes outgrow these small venues” or some such old chestnut. We were the only people at their notably rammed Horatio’s gig at The Great Escape to walk out after one song, so they’ll probably be huge. Never underestimate the power of leather jackets, white jeans and a major deal. The new Razorlight, basically. (SH)

AUSTRA

AUSTRA

Haunt Fri 8th

Austra are named after the Latvian goddess of light, in a nod to front-woman Katie Stelmanis’ roots, but their pulsating rhythms are unquestionably on the dark side of synth pop. New wave mingles with Stelmanis’ haunting and operatic vocals (she’s a former member of the Canadian Children’s Opera Chorus) creating tunes that are compelling and ethereal. Their debut album, ‘Feel It Break,’ was produced by Björk producer Damian Taylor and draws comparisons with Ms Guðmundsdóttir herself, The Knife and Kate Bush. Their tight performances make Austra one of the most collected new bands of 2011. (JMM)

the ROLLING ZONES Komedia Fri 8th

Charlie Watts just turned 70, and while the world has wondered since the 80s whether the next Rolling Stones tour would be their last, you have to wonder if he could be arsed hauling his weary old bones around the world again. But fear not, for waiting in the wings are any number of faithful tribute acts, including tonight’s Rolling Zones. Promising a two-hour set of hits and a vocalist voted best Mick Jagger lookalike (by some curiously unnamed judge) this is probably as good as it’s going to get now. (NC)

GUITAR WOLF

Concorde 2 Sat 9th

Who can lift SOURCE from its gig malaise? Bon Iver doing a onesong set of ‘Re: Stacks’ in our lounge could be a goer or The Velvet Underground playing ‘White Light/White Heat’ in a nearby park if seating is provided. A Beatles reunion at the local pub is out if Macca’s coming. What about Japan’s Guitar Wolf, responsible for “the loudest album ever recorded” - 1999’s ‘Jet Generation’ – and a band so feral their 38-year-old bass player died of a heart attack? Drop the H-bomb on our head. (BG)

BRAIDS

Prince Albert Mon 11th

On this year’s multi-faceted debut ‘Native Speaker’, Braids displayed a talent for pulling technicolour pop tunes out of thick webs of shimmering noise. Fronted by the fantastically named Raphaelle Standell-Preston, the Canadian quartet have been

Page 10

threatening a post-‘Merriweather Post Pavilion’ crossover all year. Back in Brighton yet again following their Great Escape shows (did any of these bands actually leave town, or have they all been sleeping under the pier since May?) here’s another chance to submit to their spell. (SH)

ESKMO

Concorde 2 Weds 13th

Eskmo’s tense, chilling creations have won him fans across the world, and he’s returning to Brighton for another, larger gig, with a full audio-visual set. Vast soundscapes, gloopy, melting basslines and his live, understated vocals create a new sound, effortlessly crossing genre boundaries and setting him aside from the plethora of other electronic producers from the West Coast. Innovative in a scene based on being innovative, his originality doesn’t undermine the fact that he puts on a bloody good show. (JMM)

ATHLETE

St Georges Church Thurs 14th

True story: When your esteemed scribe introduced Ms SOURCE to a good friend as “a runner” some years back, she was under the impression that said TV underling was actually some kind of track & field powerhouse. It’s a reality check surely familiar to these Britpop also-rans, who left the blocks looking like the next Usain Bolt only to become a marathon runner hitting the brick wall every day forever. If they could just get over the finishing line and find a proper job. (BG)

DUKE RAOUL • Green Door Store Thurs 14th

Brighton four-piece Duke Raoul have been quietly building their reputation on the local live scene as a band to keep an eye on. Trembling synths overlay weeping guitars on songs of weary sadness, waiting, and unrequited love, but their tight production, pop tinges, and earnest, honest vocals lift them far above being just another soundtrack to self-pity. Tonight they’re celebrating the release of a new EP, ‘Young Starlings’, and have support from the otherworldly, ambient Speak Galactic. (JMM)

VIVIAN GIRLS

Coalition Sat 16th

Girls with guitars we like. Girls bashing drums are also good. Girls who play synths would be welcome around our place any time. The same can be said for girls who like to sing. So all hail Vivian Girls – Cassie Ramone, Katy Goodman and Fiona Campbell – and their visceral punk pop, which makes the New York act attractive on every level, as exemplified on acclaimed third album ‘Share The Joy’. Tonight is your chance to do exactly that. Or just gawp at them. (BG)

ELECTRELANE •

Komedia Weds 20th

Haunt Fri 22nd

Mercury Music Prize nominees Young Knives are in Brighton for an intimate, intense show. Stalwarts of the UK revivalist post-punk scene, these tweed-jacketed veterans have five years’ of glowing recommendations behind them. They’re renowned for high energy gigs – this one will be showcasing their third album, ‘Ornaments From The Silver Arcade,’ released in March. Their scratchy, vinyl-influenced indie rock is held together with a genuine enthusiasm, catchy vocals and a commitment to doing it properly. Support comes from SOURCE favourites Kinema. (JMM)

AMBASSADEURS • Fortune of War Fri 22nd

With a keen eye for the next big thing, Throw Some Shapes have their fingers firmly on the button with this booking.

DAVID BOWIE TRIBUTE Komedia Fri 29th

When Electrelane put their business activities on indefinite hiatus in 2007, leaving behind four unimpeachable albums of Farfisa-soaked motorik and memories of countless glorious hometown gigs, we didn’t honestly expect them to return. While some members kept their musical hands in during the interregnum (search out low-key releases by Vera November, Ray Rumours and more), Electrelane’s reputation remained preserved, unsullied. Now, matter-of-factly, they’re back. Tonight isn’t their first reunion show, but, emotionally, it’s the one that counts. (SH)

YOUNG KNIVES

Ambassadeurs is the pseudonym of one Brighton-based Mark Dobson, whose latest EP release on Soundcloud has created waves of attention and commendations for his bending genre boundaries over irrepressible basslines. Also playing at this live showcase are a motley crew of local producers, from crowd-pleaser Manni Dee to Alphabet’s Heaven, with the fastest, most energetic live set we’ve seen this year. (JMM)

He’s not dead but David Bowie’s been keeping a very low profile in recent years. In fact, there seems little doubt SOURCE will live to regret skipping his set at Glastonbury 2000 to write a review of Travis in a Portakabin. What the fuck were we thinking? Many years ago this man assured his fans, in one of the greatest opening lines in pop history, that, “I know when to go out. I know when to stay in.” Well, how about tonight, Dave? It’s been bloody ages. (BG)

FOXES! •

Green Door Store Fri 29th

An indie explosion spraying catchy jangles of pop shrapnel over the audience, Foxes! are launching a new EP with this free show tonight. We haven’t heard the fruits of this most recent recording yet but we reviewed their single ‘Who Killed Rob’ ages ago and we’re looking forward to its arrival on the SOURCE doormat. Support comes in the sexy acoustic indie folk shape of Boy In The Cupboard and upbeat tunes from Fragile Creatures. (NC)

CAPDOWN

Concorde 2 Sun 31st

Capdown return to Brighton as part of a small tour following a handful of “last ever shows” and “special guest festival appearances” since they first split up in late 2007. The Milton Keynes ska-core quintet bring hardcore breakdowns, infectious saxophone melodies and a genre-smashing love of partying to Concorde 2 this month. Expect circle pits and fast-paced skanking at what could be Capdown’s last ever Brighton gig (again?). Support comes from Yorkshire ska-punk outfit Random Hand, plus Mouthwash and The Junk. (CB)

BENJI BOKO

WORDS BY JAMES KENDALL
PHOTO BY KEVIN MASON FOR GARAGE STUDIOS
 ASSISTED BY ZOE BAKER

DJ YODA LOVES HIS TECHNOLOGYBASED LIVE SHOW, MAXI JAZZ IS ON HIS ALBUM – BENJI BOKO IS HEADING FOR SUPERSTARDOM

On New Year’s Eve Benji Boko looked out over the expectant crowd, peered down at his mountain of complicated equipment and pressed the start button on what was the most important set of his life so far. His NASA space stationlike concoction of laptops, samplers, sequencers, foot pedals, keyboards, midi controllers and turntables meant that, although he was able to take apart every tune he played and rebuild them in a unique way, he could also royally fuck things up.

So what, you might think. No big deal. Yeah, maybe – if he wasn’t onstage at the O2 Arena playing the midnight set to 17,000 people. Yep, the zeros are all correct in that figure.
“It was mental,” he says, reasonably. “The most ecstatic moment of my life to date, no doubt about it. So ecstatic that I fell asleep as soon as I came offstage. It had built up to that point and then I was done, despite the loud rocking sound of bass in my dressing room.”

That bass was coming from Deadmau5 and Justice, and Benji’s warm-up man for the night was a fella called Calvin Harris. It’s a gig of a lifetime, but then Mr Boko’s live remix show is something very special. Zane Lowe and Rob Da Bank have declared themselves fans and one of Benji’s heroes, DJ Yoda, announced that, “Benji is the future, his show is frikkin’ mega!”

All the technology allows Benji to be completely free with the type of tunes he plays. He can really mix things up, from The Prodigy to music from Thomas The Tank Engine, from Nirvana to The Simpsons theme via Snoop Dogg.
“Everything is in there,” he explains. “It’s this journey of TV, nostalgic music from the 30s to now. There’s dubstep, drum’n’bass, hip hop, everything. The set up allows me to totally improvise. I never play the same tune the same way ever. I get bored otherwise.”

www.brightonsource.co.uk

But playing live isn’t all Benji does. His debut album, ‘Beats, Treats & All Things Unique’ has just come out on Tru Thoughts and it’s a jaunty little affair. Taking his spontaneous, magpie-esque approach to playing live and applying it to production, he’s come out with a LP that crosses the classic jazz-ed out Tru Thoughts sound, smoky trip hop, bass-heavy instrumental hip hop and reggae. Never staying still for a heartbeat, it reminds us of the eclectic age of big beat, where the idea was to make every track stand out. It also shares that genre’s sense of humour.
“I didn’t really have a plan,” he explains of the wall-bouncing, genre-hopping. “I just made music all the time. It’s a schizophrenic mishmash of styles. I like to experiment with genres, samples, sounds, vocal artists and instrumentals and see what comes from it. The album’s a melting pot of everything, hence the title.”

Probably the standout track is ‘Where My Heart Is”, a melodic, low-slung, head-nodding hip hop track with Faithless’ Maxi Jazz on the mic. It’s a collaboration that was a long time coming.
“I supported him DJing in Leeds when I was at university and gave him a CD of a track that I thought he’d be really good on,” Benji recalls. “He said, ‘Great, I’m totally up for it and I’ll call you next week.’ He didn’t, obviously.”
After about a year of talking with Maxi’s agent, his manager and his PA, Benji got a call one Friday night asking, ‘Can Max record it with you in the morning?’
“I thought; I can’t turn down this opportunity, so instantly said yes and rushed up to London to hire the best equipment possible,” Benji says. “We recorded it that morning, done, and two years later it came out.” Another thing that’s been a long time coming, but for very different reasons, is the visuals for Benji’s live show. One day in the SOURCE office he showed us early versions of some of the animations that will accompany the tracks that he plays. We have to say it’s a bit of a game-changer.
“I’ve been describing it as a Pixar movie, live,” he says proudly. “I have this alter ego, this purple monkey that I wanted to evolve into music videos and animations. I can’t say too much but it’s going to be the live remix show with visuals. Think Soulwax meets a Disney film. At the moment I’m coding software, and getting animations done, but it’s a long process.”

In the meantime you can catch his visual-less show at the Playgroup Festival and find out why 17,000 people went crazy on New Year’s Eve. Benji has a long-running relationship with Brighton’s premier party crew and it’s easy to see why they’re such a good match. Despite taking things very seriously behind closed doors, both put a massive emphasis on having fun over being sulky and cool. Benji loves cartoons and TV themes (“I feel more inspired by TV sometimes than I do by records,” he admits) while Playgroup love fancy dress and crazy happenings. Basically they’re all big kids.
“I think I’m doing the main slot on one of the stages on Friday night of the festival,” he says. “Playgroup fit well with what I do in terms of being very liberal with their approach to dressing up and themed nights. It goes with what I do perfectly. I hope it will be a long relationship.” We can’t see why not. Because with his NASA space station set-up Benji is shooting for the stars, and we all want to go with him.

BANGERS AND MASH Concorde 2 Fri 1st

He’s the lyrical legend, he’s the turbo-tongued motormouth, and he’s winner of more drum’n’bass awards than you can shake a mic at. It’s MC Skibadee of course, and he’s behind you... no, not really. But he is hosting Bangers And Mash, now in its fourth year, featuring regulars Original Sin, Phantasy and Eksman as well as more support from Serial Killerz, Pablo Riddla and Fatman D. If that’s too big a line-up for you, well, as Skiba would say, deal with the matter. (ZC)

Time to dust off that beret and goatee beard and slip on your best dancing shoes for this one-off return of Russ Dewberry’s legendary Brighton Jazz Rooms sessions. Afro-Cuban percussion frenzies, Brazilian bossas, afro funk and all points in between will be spun around appearances from Batacuda Band, Maracatu and the amazing Jazz Co Tech Dancers. Come and pay your respects to this kingpin of the local jazz dance scene for the past 25 years. And bring a towel – it’s going to get sweaty. (SC)

MARCUS INTALEX & CALIBRE Audio Fri 8th

As a DJ who’s been in the profession since 1989, Marcus Intalex knows his drum’n’bass onions. Uncompromisingly true to good tunes rather than commercial successes, his DJ sets are peppered with classics from the past few decades as well as some of the freshest, most underground sounds around – a recipe for floor-filling. Helping to stir up the crowd is Calibre, liquid funk’s premier innovator and Marcus Intalex’s label-mate on Soul:R. (JMM)

HOSPITALITY

Digital Sat 9th

Topping the bill of this month’s Hospital visit is Andy C, a d’n’b household name for anyone who knows their Ram from their Records. In support are Blokhe4d, comprising American Jonas Uman and Michael Vegas of Bad Company UK. Their recent tunes are manic explosions of piston-spitting beats with blitz alarm basslines. Earlier this year they released ‘The Way Life Used To Be’ on Hospital Records, paving the way for their inclusion on Hospitality’s storming roster of DJs and producers. (ZC)

JULIO BASHMORE Tube Sat 9th

Just when it looked like deep house was dead forever, a new breed of producers arrived out of the melodic leftfield of dubstep making just that. Hailing from Bristol (not Brighton as Tiga said on his 6Music show, getting us all excited), Julio Bashmore is leading the sound that’s appealing to old house heads and bleeding-edge club kids alike. He’ll have complimentary support from Donga, our city’s guru of groove, for another impressive line-up from this cosy club. (JK)

ART DEPARTMENT Audio Fri 15th

Genre labels are fine, but they are a blunt instrument. It’s very difficult to describe texture, tone, atmosphere without getting all florid. To say Art Department sit somewhere between disco and minimal techno does them no favours but, trust us, they rule. Melodic, willful, bass-heavy synths, as imagined in Berlin at that 5am moment when the night is at its darkest. (MB)

PROPER GANDER •

Volks Sat 16th

Jack Deeks’ night of serious bass really stresses the proper in the name. Two rooms of dubstep, hip hop and drum’n’bass are all tackled at full volume and full strength. This is perhaps their most impressive night yet, with Sludge’s Dodge & Fuski popping in a year after they hit the No.1 spot in both Beatport and Trackitdown. The throbbing distortion of their ‘Pornstep’ is tearing up YouTube’s UKF Dubstep channel right now. They’re joined by Dirty Dike, Jam Baxter and Sammy B-Side – some of the most important names on the UK hip hop scene, with crucial solo LPs out this year. If you haven’t been to this club yet, this is a good month to have a gander. (JK)

Krafty Kutz has got so many awards for his DJ skills over the years he’s had to start using them as impromptu paperweights and door stoppers. His latest mini-mix for Jaguar Skills demonstrates his love for old and new electronic music and his adeptness at mashing the two together into a cacophonous blend of beats, breaks and bass. Make sure you’re at Digital to witness the ridiculous skills of this international talent residing in our hometown. (ZC)

SICKSVILLE-A-GO-GO • Concorde 2 Sat 16th

Those filthy, tight-jeaned anachronisms at Stay Sick have pulled out all the slick-mulleted stops for this takeover at the Conky tonight, ransacking the place from top to bottom with go-go dancers, dastardly décor, a surf bar, a stage full of revolving mirrors and dance podiums where you’ll probably be able to gawp at guys and girls straight off B-movie film posters. As well as the usual garage, girl group and rock’n’roll tunes, they go all-out with a live line-up counting Austrian and French-Japanese performers. (BM)

Ridiculously catchy, ‘Gold Dust’ has been the crossover hit of the past year, uniting drum’n’bass with the top 40 and inspiring another generation of sweaty-browed revellers. Fresh’s drum’n’bass credentials stretch back to his time with Bad Company in the 90s and he’s hit the big time recently with lighter, more accessible tunes such as the soon-to-bereleased ‘Louder’, which shows commercial promise by managing to combine his jungle roots with pop, dubstep and an anthemic vocal track. AKAAKAROAR VS DEADLY RHYTHM

Life Fri 22nd

For round two of their soundclash, AKAAKAROAR and Deadly Rhythm have got a suitably boisterous line-up. Headlining is Boddika, or Al Green to his friends, who made up one half of drum’n’bass duo Instra:mental. His new project sounds both retro and futuristic, taking influence from Detroit techno and Chicago house, generating strong mechanical sonics that are analogue-driven to create tunes that wouldn’t feel out of place scoring an 80s sci-fi B-movie classic. In support are Mele and Pariah bringing the heavy fire. (ZC)

BRANDON BLOCK Coalition Sat 23rd

His name might have become shorthand for partying too hard but Brandon Block has had a much bigger effect on dance music culture than you might think. Before Blocko and his partner in largin’ it, Alex P, came along, Space Ibiza was a dark little club with all the music inside. They dragged a pair of decks onto the terrace and changed the White Island forever. Quite apart from that he was the big name in feelgood house music for years, being a regular at Up Yer Ronson, Club For Life and Miss Moneypenny’s. So, just the man for an Ibiza Classic night. (JK)

It’s always been generally believed that to make a name for yourself as a DJ you need to start producing. Although often true, there’s a current trend that eschews that philosophy. Numbers label head Jackmaster shirked the studio, Oneman’s skipped it, and now Ben UFO’s got them both in his tractor beam. After founding Hessel Audio with Pearson Sound and Panagea, Ben’s gone on to mix some of the tightest sets at Boiler Room and represents on Rinse FM fortnightly. This evening’s a four-hour marathon set so expect some old eclectic grooves as well as box-fresh jams. (ZC)

Nicky Blackmarket’s name is synonymous with the old school tape packs we’d get from records shops like Slammin’ Vinyl back in the day, and hearing MC Dett bellow his name in a hoarse roar over classics like ‘26 Bass’ and ‘The Nine’ still gives us goosebumps. He had a legendary partnership with the late Stevie Hyper D setting the benchmark that all rave sets would be judged against in the future. With a knowledge of dance music more expansive than Wikipedia, this evening is going to be one for hardcore junglists and d’n’b neophytes alike. (ZC)

When Ye Ye Fever featured as the Guardian’s club pick of the week under its Mama Ko Mama Sa moniker, its then venue The Bees Mouth started to accrue queues that snaked down Western Road. So, after a brief nomadic period, it’s now found new pastures to settle on with the cobbled floors of the Green Door Store. Any anxieties that the grizzly grey weather might thwart a good turnout are soon blown away. The venue fills up with ankle-flashing hipsters, overly earnest hippies and funky highlife sounds as we dance to the African fusion of chanted vocals, high-octane percussion and complex rhythms.

ART: MA FINE ART SHOW University of Brighton Faculty of Arts until Sun 3rd

If you read this in time, grab the brief opportunity to spend the rest of the weekend gawping at another eclectic graduate show, featuring the University of Brighton’s finest and artists based at that den of experimentalism the Phoenix. From microscopic seaweed and cliff chalk to inanimate eBay finds given new life through precious gemstones and ceramics, paintings, baroque carvings and “anti-masterpieces” focusing on rubber, there are 19 original new talents from all over the globe at play here. We met Blue Demon Jr – the first Mexican to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship – and he’s absolutely huge, with a chest three times the size of our pigeon offering. Cassandro, the first openly gay luchador, was with him, all charm and flamboyance, both climbing up onto a carpark roof for our photos, unafraid of falling six storeys down. All of which bodes well for their return for the Mex fest at the Dome, with real lucha libre (faster and more acrobatic than WWE), alongside Mexican music and food. The vogue for traditional crafts and textiles undoubtedly lies in putting them to new, distinctly non-traditional uses at the moment. Whether it’s a transitional phase or the future for makers and spinners, the ethos is perfectly encapsulated by the six artists involved in Twisted, who variously turn clay into cages, puppets into tableaux, sewing machines into drawing tools and fabrics into floating installations. ART

WORDS AND PHOTO BY JAMES KENDALL

If you were to fire an arrow randomly into the Brighton sky, chances are it’d return to earth stuck in a wall decorated by Aroe. Perhaps the longest serving member of the Brighton graffiti community (he started writing in 84), the Heavy Artillery member has had a hand in nearly all the big legal pieces around town, either through organising the work or painting it himself. But surely his seminal work is this twostorey melding of Star Wars and b-boy culture, typical of his modern take on the 80s. It’s a look that got him invited to California’s legendary MSK graf crew, who are no strangers to huge work. Like much of his graff it’s a piece so huge that if you walk on the same side of Ditchling Road you can miss it. It’s been around for ages now but for our Outdoors Issue we wanted to make sure everyone had caught up with this work of art as the building has been sold and will be ripped down soon. Go and say goodbye to this modern icon of Brighton.

BRIGHTON’S BEST NEW MUSIC WORDS BY MATT BARKER, NICK COQUET, JAKE CUNNINGHAM, JOSEPH GRANT, JESSICA MARSHALL MCHATTIE

EP: ADOLESCENT • Run Away From Bad People (adolescent.bandcamp.com)

On this debut EP from Brighton-born producer Alex Parish, each track floats hypnotically through to the next, displaying down-tempo electronic soundscapes combined with gentle glitch and trip hop undertones. Opener ‘TLE’ mimics Alex’s struggle with temporal lobe epilepsy and the resulting seizures. It’s accompanied by an emotive semi-documentary music video mostly shot and edited by Alex himself. The video takes you by the hand and leads you through Alex’s experience of TLE. A promising start. (JG)

ALBUM: BIRDENGINE •

The Crooked Mile (Bleeding Heart)

When a CD review can’t be summed up with ‘it’s X meets Y’, we’re kind of forced to dig a little deeper for a description. This is pretty much one of them, X and Y usually suggesting integers of conventionality. Birdengine has an eerie beauty about it; fairly conventional song structuring in that it doesn’t willfully disorientate the listener, but with an underlying sense of unease underpinning much of the content. The 10 tales of strung-out supernature run from accordion to castanets, with softly angry guitar picking that pricks the gentle baroque like a rusty pin. (NC)

ALBUM: FINK • Perfect Darkness (Ninja Tune)

Ninja’s lone troubadour (although we’re always

Page 30

FINK

reminded of his past as an electronic producer and DJ), Fink is now four albums into this genre incarnation and it’s clear he’s earned his place at the table. This time out there’s a brooding menace to the songs with a handful of the darkness suggested by the collection’s title. Reflective guitars, strings and light percussion trail the smooth vocal, with the mood lifting often enough to deliver a rounded summation of emotional exploration, from fear to optimism and beyond. (NC)

ALBUM: JEAN-GOUGH FRAIS • Sssh… (jean-gough-frais.bandcamp.com)

The sleek, urbane Jean-Gough Frais is like a modern-day Casanova holding court in a West Street nightclub. Oozing effortless charm and unsettling sleaze in equal measures, his smooth talking creates visions of sun cream, dirty dancing and sunglasses at night. Reliving 70s funk and filling a gap in the music market that no-one knew existed, Frais’ slick lyrics and crafted riffs are catchier than most diseases. Imagine the lovechild of Sid James and James Bond trying to seduce you at 4am, and you’re nearly there. (JMM)

SINGLE: MARY HAMPTON • Honey In The Rock (Rough Trade)

Former recipient of Mojo’s Folk Album Of The Month, Mary Hampton makes a sound that’s resolutely diminutive and delicate, a subtle mélange of guitar, ukulele and gentle brass with just the vaguest hint of percussion. Against this mouse-like orchestra is the most haunting voice we’ve heard in a while, beautifully bucolic and managing to be almost apologetically epic without any hint of artifice or cynicism. A Brighton treasure, she’s definitely worth investigating if you don’t know her already. (NC)

EP: ITAL TEK • Whip It Up (Atom River)

It’s been over a year since his melodic and clinical ‘Midnight Colour’ album took the dubstep world to a new dimension, and Ital Tek, or Alan to his mother, has created ‘Whip It Up,’ probably not in homage to Willow Smith. The four-track EP features the futuristic soundscapes he’s known for: intense basslines simmer behind artificial synths and glitchy, scratchy

www.brightonsource.co.uk/reviews

melodies. An evolution in the progression of dubstep surely awaits. (JMM)

EP: LIONS ARE SMARTER THAN I AM •

American Idle (lionsaresmarterthaniam.bandcamp.com)

A follow-up from last year’s ‘Pop Idle’ release, this local postrock outfit are developing an acute sound, putting them far away from anything you’ve heard before. Clearly those masters of the genre Mogwai have been a big influence on the band, but only as an omniscient presence – watching over this trio as they utilise various pedals and effects to make their own recipe for powerful, melodic and predominantly lyricless music. You can listen to first single ‘Galbras’ and download their first EP online. (JC)

EP: MEAN POPPA LEAN • Live On Twelve Legs (Massive Artists)

For a band whose reputation is principally built on their live shows, it makes obvious sense to showcase the energy and ability of the gigs on record. This seven-track EP features highlights of the set that’s rocked crowds at the V and Isle Of Wight festivals and will be taking to the road across the UK in September. It’s heavily rooted in soul, r’n’b and funk, all shot through an unapologetic prism of rock to arrive at a sound that spells good times and sunny climes. Check them out at Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar on Saturday 16th. (NC)

ALBUM: OMAR

Sing (If You Want It) (Tru Thoughts •)

You might remember Omar from his soul classic ‘There’s Nothing Like This’ in 1992. You might not have been born of course, but trust us – it was a big hit when singles actually sold. 13 years later, he made this album and finally looked set for worldwide recognition. Collaborations with Stevie Wonder, Angie Stone, Estelle and Jo Bentley were the credibility confirmations he needed, but the record company went bust a week after it came out and it sort of sank. So Tru Thoughts have stepped up and given the album a deserved second chance, making this a true soul survivor. (NC)

EP: PINK NARCISSUS •

Block Your Ears/Shield Your Eyes (reverbnation.com/ pinknarcissus)

The last time we reviewed a PN release, we were impressed by the scratchy and dissolute, don’t-give-a-fuck attitude that spewed from the speakers. With this latest EP, the balls are still there in spades but, boy, have they dropped. There’s a decidedly commercial air about these latest songs; a rounder production that takes the deliciously doomy pessimism of the band and confuses any previous notions of what radio-friendly means. Shades of Jane’s Addiction and 80s Matchbox bleed through, in what amounts to the band’s best work to date by a mile. (NC)

DEMO OF THE MONTH:

ALBUM: THE MOJO FINS • Shake The Darkness (Amazon)

THE DENIM •

(soundcloud.com/thedenim)

After Suede and Corduroy comes the latest fabric-based band to catch our attention. With demos we’re not necessarily looking for production excellence or a faultless mix – indeed these can sometime distract from a lack of substance beneath. But the songs in The Denim’s Soundcloud set all have a basis of greatness about them – loose, melodic and ear-pleasing rock with thoughtful lyricism and an overall air of promise we’re only too happy to publicise. (NC)

Since their debut album in 2009 the band have cranked up the epic levels; these songs soar with anthemic confidence. The production stewardship of Dave Eringa (Manics, Idlewild) truly brings the songs to life, juggling crescendos of analogue guitar warmth with live strings and keys against towering vocal harmonies. The tunes are there, the hooks are there – you’re unlikely to hear a more accomplished and self-assured album this year. The Mojo Fins just have to transfer it to a national audience, and that can only be a matter of time. (NC)

SINGLE: NATIVE ROSES • Colours (Creek Records)

A troupe of young bohemians, Native Roses’ debut release is the culmination of several tentative arrangements of the same loose circle of friends and housemates. Their trademark closeknit vocal harmonies come over like a family band singing on the porch at sunset – in equal parts mournful Appalachian ballad (the girls) and rugged British rock’n’roll (the boys). This familial closeness is tipped off by the central refrain; “we’ll all just fall into each others arms” – the theme song for a band of 21st century folk minstrels. (MB)

www.brightonsource.co.uk/reviews

ALBUM: PINT SIZE HERO • Get Your Kicks (pintsizehero.com)

This just describes itself as a rock’n’roll record – no mucking about with subgenres here – and it certainly lives up to that timehonoured moniker. Tidal waves of guitar smash away everything in their path, with energetic echoes of Wolfmother and even The Who, but it’s certainly not just volume and velocity. The songs here just don’t sound like a new, self-funded and unsigned band at all; it’s a massive accomplishment. Not just in the professional sound they’ve achieved, but in the way they obviously and instinctively know how rock’n’roll works. (NC)

SINGLE: POPE JOAN •

The Celebration/Billy’s Bride (myspace.com/popejoan)

These former SOURCE cover stars never fail to impress us – and this double-header single is no exception. There’s a postpunk edginess to the songs with an avant-garde narrative slant, all somehow enveloped with a melodic pop sheen that insists you’re listening to something inherently commercial and accessible. If percussive guitar menace can be delivered with suave moustache panache, it certainly is here. Get it, and if you haven’t caught up with the last single ‘A Drowning’ yet, get that as well. Pope Joan are ace. (NC)

THE OUTDOOR ISSUE

WORDS BY NICK COQUET illustration by EVANNAVE at evannave.co.uk

THE REASONS

Engaging in sexual activity in a public place, while strangers watch on appreciatively, seems a pretty seedy thing to be involved in. But we’re open-minded grown-ups, so we thought we’d go check it out.

THE EXPERIENCE

We did some research at SOURCE – everyone had an idea of where it happens but I guess unless you’ve parked up in a secluded spot at midnight you’d never know for sure. Numerous places were suggested but it seemed Devil’s Dyke was the one, with its array of car parks on the approach to the pub at the end. My first foray was around 9pm – it had been pissing down all day and it was safe to say no one was actually picnicking in the car parks, yet sure enough one had a few vehicles mysteriously parked up in close proximity.

OK, I thought, I don’t pretend to understand this at all. Most of us had been there a good 45 minutes by now and no one was there for the verdant scenery that lay hidden behind the night. Yet still they all sat, smoking silently in the darkness. I wondered if we were actually all there doing the same thing, and Brighton’s July magazines would be awash with similarly disappointing dogging articles.

“as I took my place among them, the car next to me flashed its lights…”

I joined them, and almost immediately the cars started up and filed out, indicating right towards the Dyke. I followed close behind, but when they parked up again and I stopped beside them the same thing happened – they were off. Maybe a strange camper van wasn’t welcome to their private party, so I let them go and went home dejected to watch Dexter. Around midnight I thought I’d give it another go. The rain had stopped altogether now, my earlier attempt perhaps prohibitively drizzly, and it was now properly dark. As I reached the same car park I’d started in before, it was a different story. There were eight cars parked there now, and as I took my place among them the car next to me flashed its lights. Now, our research had hinted at this code, but without definitively pinning down meanings or suitable responses. I didn’t really want to flash mine in case it meant ‘come and bum me’ or something. I rolled a cigarette and struggled with my crappy lighter. As it sparked a few times before flame was forthcoming, my unthinking signal was met from the same adjacent car with a brief display of strobe flashlight, a sort of white version of the red ones cyclists go about with. It was pretty obvious that dogging was in the air – there was no other reason for anyone to be there. Yet everyone sat motionless in their darkened vehicles, most dimly lit by their own orangey cigarette glow. Winding down my window to blow smoke, I could hear laughter from the flashing car. There was a woman and three blokes inside, a dim torchlight playing about their features. She said to one of them, “wave the condoms”, presumably another subtle signal to the rest of us. But no one moved. This went on for about half an hour, during which time a few cars left and others arrived. They were a mix of lone fat men in expensive cars, gingerly testing their suspension through the

www.brightonsource.co.uk/features

Then, a brainwave. I made another roll-up, and flicked my lighter flint a few times. As well as possibly mimicking some official dogging flash signal in the darkness for all to see, it also gave me the opportunity to feign malfunction, get a light off the woman next door and ideally ask what the form here was. I didn’t want to be sat there like a tit all damn night. So I got out, the first of any of us present to do so, and tapped on her window. And for some totally bizarre reason, they all froze, stared forwards and ignored me. I pointed at the unlit cig between my fingers, but to no acknowledgement or response whatsoever. They just stared ahead. So I went back to my own warm interior, my lighter now miraculously mended.

S

SOURCE VIRGINS: DOING STUFF FOR THE FIRST TIME

As I looked around and clocked the new arrivals, it was clear that the woman who’d ignored my quest for fire was the only female there. It’s kind of inevitable I guess; it’s always going to be iffy blokes whose ears prick up at the notion of ‘NSA fun’. We’d set up a female SOURCE profile on a dogging website to seek advice on local outdoor opportunities and received more than 400 gentleman replies overnight, most kindly offering to have sex with us. So if there was any suggestion of a power play here, it surely lay with her – around a dozen car windows she could tap on and grant the silent occupant an al fresco frisking. The videos we’d seen on the site certainly showed a more active experience for all concerned than was playing out here – willies waggled through windows to the gruff encouragement of shaky cameramen. And then a strange thing happened. Like I say, her car had been the only one exhibiting any sign of life at all, with chatter and torchlight and strobed codes – at least I was parked next to the only one that obviously didn’t have a hosepipe on the exhaust in a mass midnight suicide pact. Her car’s interior light went on and, sitting as I was in a van with a higher vantage point than those around or opposite, I was afforded a vaguely front row view of her going down on the driver, whose seat was half reclined in a knee-compromising position for the backseat occupant. No obvious signal for spectators was made, indeed still no one moved from their own cars. So I sat rather awkwardly, thankful for the eye contact avoidance the hilltop gloom provided, while this sexual act took place without significant enthusiasm from fellator, fellatee or in-car audience. It reached an apparent conclusion and the light went out again. Gradually, cars began to start up and move on with the assumption that the show, such as it was, was over.

WAS IT WORTH IT?

I think I can safely say that for all those present, it can’t have been. If you’re looking to give or receive a blowjob, 1am on a windy hill wouldn’t be top of my list. As for the other spectators – no doubt mentally cursing my sexy view – I doubt they got their rocks off either. To spend such a long time with the speculative hope of witnessing sex just seems an indication of crushing loneliness and social ineptitude. This might have been a particularly unsuccessful example, but dogging looks like a wretched hobby.

WALKING

For some, walking is just the only late night option when you’ve boozed your taxi fare away – up and down the kerb as you shamble home all messy. But some people actually walk to take in the air and their surroundings, you know, like on purpose. Here’s some routes you can take to cut down on yer pork life and get some exercise.

Victorian opulence abounds with several English Heritagelisted monuments, commemorating many of Brighton’s historic notables lying about the place. It’s an oddly beautiful and quietly humbling place to visit with some genuinely awesome tombs, the like of which no one will bother to build for you. (NC)

BEST DISUSED RAILWAY WALK

BEST WALK WITHOUT HILLS

In 1887 a railway line opened which carried tourists from Aldrington up the long, slow hills to Devil’s Dyke. The service fell into disuse in the 30s, but these days it’s possible to follow most of the old route on foot along the Dyke Railway Trail. The current path starts at the top of Poplar Avenue in Hangleton, climbing northwards away from the city until it reaches Devil’s Dyke, with its pub, open-top buses and awe-inspiring views. (SH)

BEST WALK ENDING IN A PUB

By the end of a walk you can’t beat a beer, making the nine-mile trek from Hassocks to Lewes, along the South Downs, perfect to muster up a healthy thirst. Via the path along the Hassocks railway station you approach Jack and Jill, then walk along the downs stopping to take in the breathtaking views. By the third hour you’ll be gagging for the delights of the Lewes Arms pub which greets you on at the end of the epic journey. (MH)

Grab a few drinks and a designated driver and take one of several signposted walks along the South Downs, starting at the car park at the top of the downs on the way out to Ditchling. Wrap up warm and make sure you don’t get too drunk as falling isn’t recommended. Aim to get there an hour before sunrise; start at the main entrance, head either right or left, walk and explore until the sun starts to rise and you’ll see Brighton in a whole new light. (HM)

BEST WALK AMONG THE DEAD

It’s rare for a town to have most of its dead concentrated in such a dedicated area, but a stroll up Bear Road reveals both the Woodvale and Extra Mural cemeteries, with the Jewish cemetery just round the corner as well as a pair of big-chimney crematoria.

Page 34

Popular with cyclists as well as walkers, the wheelchairfriendly under-cliff path from Brighton Marina offers some of the county’s most unusual scenery. The path winds for over three miles eastwards before petering out at Telscombe Cliffs – in 1986 this isolated stretch of chalk beach doubled as the planet Thoros Beta in Doctor Who. Nesting fulmars swoop overhead while cormorants power along the Channel. Flagging walkers can step inland and catch a bus home at Ovingdean, Rottingdean and Saltdean. (SH)

BEST COUNTRY-LITE WALK

Stanmer Park, on the way out to Falmer, is a good novice’s entry point to getting fresh air and seeing horses and stuff. From its entrance where you’ll begin and end your walk, you can do an entire circuit within half an hour, unless you stop off for tea and cake at the quaint halfway café or check out Stanmer House, the eco buildings and old church that punctuate your stroll. Summer sees families with pergodas and barbecues pitching up to make a day of it. (Caution: may contain poi.) (NC)

BEST WALK VIA BUS

You’ll need the best part of a sunny day to complete the Seven Sisters walk, but the full route covers some of the most beautiful and iconic countryside in Britain. Grab a one-day saver bus ticket, and start walking at Cuckmere Haven (or earlier, from Seaford, if you’re particularly hardy). The route over the staggeringly steep Seven Sisters is punishing, but persist beyond Birling Gap, onwards and upwards, to a much-deserved pint at The Beachy Head pub itself. (SH)

SOUNDWAVES

Now partnered with new music discovery platform noisey.com, The1234 has added an exciting new A&R element to its maverick and chaotic line-ups, making this possibly the most eclectic array of new and established music in town over the summer. With around 75 live sets from alt.legends like Lydia Lunch and Can’s Damo Suzuki and a massive array of new acts, you’ll need to plan your movements carefully to avoid missing too much stuff, and the bill is pumped up even more with DJ sets and eight after parties dotted around town to max out your day out. HEADLINERS: Black Lips, Raveonettes, Lydia Lunch DON’T MISS: The King Blues, Damo Suzuki IN A NUTSHELL: Masses and masses of music

New music and sound art across four days and nights are on the agenda for this city-based gathering of cerebral bookings. Soundwaves is a mix of events, performance and exhibitions with an eye firmly on the experimental, where artists are free to work without constraints. Always pioneering, never dull, this is certainly something a bit different. In many ways Playgroup is everything a festival should be – packed with adventure and silliness but not packed head to toe with tents and toilet queues. Situated in the Kent countryside, it expects a manageable crowd of around 2,000 spread across a handful of music stages hosting BOY COM, The Correspondents, Carnival Collective, Grasscut, Los Albertos and more, covering everything from gypsy swing to glitch hop. Also on site are magical mystery tour buses, a cinema tent, installation art and cabaret, plus the best food and drink around including lots from the local area. This is the second outing for Playgroup, and following the success of its debut it’s already a firm festival fixture. True city escapism in a sociable setting that’s half as far as London with twice the attraction – hey, there’s no exhaust fumes here, just party people enjoying the beautiful mayhem. We’ve got a pair of tickets to give away – email competition@brightonsource. co.uk with PLAYGROUP as the subject for a chance to win.

JULY 15-17 / GULDFORD / £120 59 MILES FROM BRIGHTON

The Surrey sunshine shines on a huge array of heritage acts with just enough to keep the youngsters happy. Careful bill jiggling might well allow them to skulk off to see N-Dubz while dad’s watching PiL and mum’s away with James Blunt. This year is a best yet in terms of coaxing old punks back to the stage – a lot of the bill could be from Reading 79, and there’s nothing wrong with that at all. Dance, comedy and theatre round off a top weekend. HEADLINERS: Roger Daltrey, Razorlight, James Blunt DON’T MISS: Adam Ant, PiL, Gallows IN A NUTSHELL: Suburban nostalgia with definite dad bias

Bloomers. How can you walk past someone wearing bloomers and not want to know why? Luckily Charlie was kind enough not to slap our faces and told us a story we’d love to be true. “I don’t know how much you know about knickers,” she asks us as we blush. “Women would go and get lingerie for their wedding night and they’d needlepoint their initials into the back of their pants. And these ones I’m wearing have that in the back of them, which means that they’re ancient, and that someone went and bought these to pop their cherry. I thought that was awesome.” That is, indeed, awesome, as is the rest of the outfit. Charlie is clearly the world champion of Fashion Buckaroo, a game where you put on as many rad items as you can without toppling over. She gets away with the madness thanks to the matching colours that run through the outfit, with those beads holding everything together (thematically, not literally). A real ray of sunshine. Head scarf and flower, various “The flowers I pick up when I see them and they’re cheap enough. The headscarf is from a charity shop I think. I have something in my hair pretty much all the time.” Jacket from H&M “It was on sale and I had to have it because it was amazing. It was 15 quid down from 60 – I was really impressed. It’s just lovely.” Beads from a charity shop “I always get them when I see them cheap because I wear a lot of them.” Cardigan from Spain “I think I got it when I lived in Spain, but I can’t remember the make of it – same with the dress.” Dress from Spain “Why do I like it? It’s pretty colours and flowers and things and it’s nice!” Bloomers from Snoopers Paradise “I bought them yesterday and I love them. I sort of have a weird passion for lingerie.” Tights from Primark, “probably” “I constantly wear coloured tights.” Shoes from eBay “They’re just shoes – they’re a nice colour and they’re a reasonable height for walking around. I wear heels all the time.”

100 PEOPLE WHO MAKE BRIGHTON WHAT IT IS NO. 20 MARK GAPPA

Brighton’s parks don’t grow on their own you know, there’s a huge team including Garden Manager Mark. Maintaining Brighton’s parks must take a fair bit of work – what do you do? I look after the centre run – the Old Steine through St Peters, the North Vic Boulevard and some housing estates, planting wild flowers, 300 trees a year, tropical plants like bananas and grasses from Stanmer Nursery. What are the biggest challenges facing the outdoor spaces in Brighton? Well it’s a very young city so we get the usual problems with litter, but it’s mostly very positive because people enjoy and respect what we do. There’s obviously a lot of weeding and maintenance of the grass along the city centre sites, and wild flower sites need different management to encourage birds, butterflies and bumble bees. Does the income from events on park space justify the inconvenience? It’s generally written in that they have to tidy up. There’s always something for us to do afterwards, it depends on the weather and how long they’re there. We’ve got the equipment if it needs reseeding, but these are green spaces for all – you’ve got to have mixed use of an area. If the Lady Boys for instance are there for a month it’s only one month out of 12, we’ve got other areas people can use. Is there much artificial maintenance or do you let nature evolve the spaces? We do have to bolster areas with seeds to give them more depth and become a flowering wild meadow quicker. Nature would do that – it might take 15 or 20 years, but we can achieve it almost instantly. There are no harmful pesticides so it’s great for the bees; they’re all over these wild flower sites. A mown park is a bit like a green desert; nothing flowers, but if you leave them for a while there’s a real buzz of insect activity. What do you think would make people use their parks more often? It’s about having the mixture – we’re doing a site in Saltdean now with a bowling green, skate park, tennis courts and football pitches as well as a wild flower area. It’s all within two minutes of each other and helps make the parks universal and open to everyone.

THE OO OUTD E ISSU

There’s a pretty solid menu but The Garden Café is all about the ever-changing seasonal speciality board, which is considerable and tempting. The mackerel paté (£4.99) comes with plenty of crunchy toast, rich onion relish, a decent salad and is smooth and full of flavour. In fact there’s plenty of leafy goodness on each of the plates; the side salad (£3.50) being conventional, but all the ingredients – tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, a variety of leaves – were tasty and fresh. The chicken, chorizo and mozzarella burger is far from the average KFC-esque offering. The chicken breast seems grilled and it isn’t drowned in mayonnaise – in fact it almost feels healthy. Two large slabs of chorizo can’t ruin that impression and the mountain of chips (not home cut but cooked well) is balanced by a huge, fresh, olive-topped salad. There’s not much reviewing you can do about a baked potato with cheese (£4.50 with beans included), but in the criteria of being crispy outside and soft inside it performed well.

THE VERDICT

THE PLACE

For the Outdoors Issue we thought about blagging one of Carluccio’s new hampers that they announced this month. But they cost £45 and we thought you could probably get a mountain of food from ASDA for that. While investigating where you can eat surrounded by grass and trees we discovered that every park these days has a café – St Ann’s Well Gardens, being the most middle class park in Brighton, was thought to be the nicest. Between torrential showers the

A lovely experience, it might not be the cheapest café to grab a snack for your hungry niece but it’s a nice change to going to a restaurant for lunch. The food was really good quality and The Garden Café really put the fresh into alfresco.

WERE WE SUSSED

No way, we sat miles away from the café in the middle of the slightly damp park. Unless the dog walkers were spies, we got away with it.

THE OUTDOOR ISSUE

In conversation with

Amir Williams Words and photo by james kendall

Brighton’s premier pro skater, Amir Williams, has been tearing up the city for the last 13 years. He’s recently picked up a new sponsor in the shape of Etnies and will be skating the Route One and Etnies demo at Hove Lagoon Skatepark. He also makes hip hop under the name Amirmortal. At what point did you realise that you were good at skating? I cracked my head open and went into a coma when I was little on a BMX and I didn’t skate until I was 17, so I was a late bloomer. When I first started I weighed 17 stone – my nickname was Chubs – so I guess 19, 20, maybe 21 was when I got good. At 20 or 21 I got my first shop sponsor. My friend got me to enter a comp in London but I wouldn’t enter anything unless I knew I could land at least three tricks in a row. I wanted to do well. I wanted to learn consistency, because that’s the key for staying on in competitions. How did you end up going pro? We used to have a half pipe down here [at the West Pier] but the council took it away. It stopped a lot of skateboarders and it meant I had to start skating street. I got a hunger for that after I won a couple of contests and lots of sponsors came up to me. I had to choose who to skate for out of six or seven companies. I chose DC shoes and Karma and went pro. Now I’m sponsored by Gumball 3000, Route One (who are working on a pro board for me with 3D graphics), and Etnies. I just found out that a lot of the Etnies guys in California are from Brighton. Some of them went to my school and remember me. Do you make a living out of skating? I don’t have to work, luckily. It is hard to make it pro in this country. There’s a few of us now, but when I started it was a really rare thing. It wasn’t something that you

Page 44

could plan to be. If I get photographed and you can see one of my sponsors logos in the photo, I get paid for that. Then they pay for travel – I’m waiting to go on an India tour – and I’m really careful with the money they pay me. I haven’t got a car or a fat mansion or anything but I wouldn’t have done half of the things I’ve done if it wasn’t for skating – it shows you a lot of life. What’s Brighton like as a skating town? It’s known all around the world. The only harsh thing is that we don’t have a decent indoor park, but even without that it’s a very good scene. The Level had its years of being good but there’s a bit of a cloud over it. They’re talking about what to do with it. I agree with it having police patrols and cameras, cos that’s why I’m not there now. I’ve done a lot there through the years, and you never know what’s gonna happen there. But don’t get me wrong, I love The Level – it made me who I am as a skater. But if you go down there now, I doubt you’d see any skateboarders there – it’s all BMXs and scooters.

What’s a typical day for you? I don’t go to bed until about seven cos I’m making beats all night. I make hip hop instrumentals and my own lyrical stuff and I’m a scratch DJ as well. I check out the weather and if it’s a nice day I might get hyped watching a skate video, or a film cos I’m a bit of a film fanatic. I’m quite creative so I don’t sit around or mong out or get high. I pretty much skate all day, although for the last month I’ve been trying to rest my Achilles heel tendon as it’s a bit bruised and NASS, the world championship, is coming up soon. I’ve entered that every year DEMO: Hove Lagoon Skate Park, Sat 23rd and won one before. I’m FACEBOOK: facebook.com/AmirMortal1 not saying I’ll win it this BRIGHTEN VIDEO: tinyurl.com/BrightenVid year, but I really like to be on form.

SIX OF THE BEST

MUSIC’S GREAT OUTDOORS S

THE O OUTDO ISSUE

BOW WOW WOW

Most bands’ experiences of the great outdoors consist of views through a steamed-up tour bus window, but many manage to think beyond their immediate surroundings of drummers’ farts and Ginsters pies to wax landscape lyrical. To close our Outdoors Issue, here’s six of the best musical moments from beyond the front door.

it’s certainly evocative of being out in the sunshine. The universality of the song is chipped away at slightly by the fact it was written by Sting as he watched his children playing in their garden – from inside his new castle. Yeah, his fucking castle. (JK)

FLEET FOXES

Stewart Lee used this to soundtrack his recent Comedy Vehicle diatribe against living in the countryside, its unflappable cheerfulness the perfect musical foil for his hangdog city humour. Cliff’s cheery and dangerously infective “Bah-ba-ba-ba-bah” vocal refrain introduces and punctuates this wholesome and effervescent song, pointing out that the country is, after all, an admission-free destination where the air is good, the day is fine and he’d have us believe he’s holding hands with a pretty girl. Well, two out of three ain’t bad, Cliff. (NC)

‘White Winter Hymnal’

With their first album, Fleet Foxes painted landscapes in our minds through beautiful lyrics and well crafted music. Although the entire album is an ode to the beautiful nature of our world, ‘White Winter Hymnal’ creates a narrative of it; through Robin Pecknold’s lyrics we are transported to a snowy white landscape, and a wonderfully described winter story unfolds therein. Although we’re getting into the hottest months of the year, we’ll still be in need of this winter warmer. (JC)

BOW WOW WOW ‘Go Wild In The Country’

Co-written by Malcolm McLaren and the boys in the band, this simple song of dumping fast food and the concrete jungle in favour of romping in nature’s larder is propped up by a joyful melody, tribal drumming, jangly guitar and the golden tonsils of a 15-year-old Annabella Lwin. As exuberant as a pop record gets, they blasted this out at last year’s tribute show to guitarist Matthew Ashman – it sounded as good as it did when it was first released in 1982. Altogether now, “Goooooooooooo…” (SC)

STING

‘Fields Of Gold’

The Ace Face in Quadrophenia and singer of ‘Every Breath You Take’ – what’s not to like about Sting? Well, plenty, but the nauseatingly tantric, enviro-hypocrite can certainly write a melody. Of course, this isn’t really about summery walks in barley fields – it’s a metaphor for life, stupid – but

THE BEACH BOYS

‘Surfer Girl’

One things that rarely gets mentioned about the outdoors is that there are girls there – literally all over the place. Not for the Beach Boys was staying in bed all day with the curtains closed (that would come later for Brian, as he went mad for decades). Instead they were out on the sand, falling in love in the golden sunshine. Brian sings that, “We could ride the surf together/While our love would grow” but he was unlikely to impress many girls with his skills – famously only Dennis could catch a wave. (JK)

LEMONHEADS

‘The Outdoor Type’

Evan Dando might have been a one-man Gram Parsons revival campaign in the early 90s but, despite being one of the few artists playing country rock at the time, even he was a rhinestone cowboy. He knew more about smoking grass than actually hiking across it. ‘The Outdoor Type’ admits that he’d rather stay at home, and not without good reason. “I can’t go away with you on a rock climbing weekend,” he worries over prettily plucked guitar and wandering country bass. “What if something’s on TV and it’s never shown again?” Perhaps now we’ve got Sky+ he’s out rambling every evening. (JK)
