PARTY REPUBLIC

OK, get ready for a rant. A quick poll on Facebook provided the shocking news that a lot of people are pretty much OK with the Jubilee. Sure, we’ll grab the day off with both hands but, let’s be clear here, it comes at a cost. And that cost is celebrating the fact that our society has inequality built into not just its traditions but also its laws. Even putting aside the fancy houses we don’t really want to be The Queen, but it puts our backs up that we can’t get her job because you have to be born into it – appointed by God, if you will. The idea of an entirely equal society may be a foolish utopian pipedream but it’s something to keep in our sights, now more than ever. A big shindig shouting “We don’t really believe in equality” just doesn’t sit right. As our friend Spanish Bex says, “Britain should find a better reason to party.” So take that extra day and find your own reason to celebrate what makes living in Britain great – music, art or simply your fellow man in the street. And do it without wrapping yourself in Union Jack bunting.

If you think the Olympic organisers are complete arses for staging beach volleyball in the centre of that London, why not get down to an actual bona fide beach to have a go for yourself? The Yellowave Beach Sports venue on Madeira Drive is hosting a series of free have-a-go events called Go Spike on Wednesday evenings from June 20th, 6-7pm, and there’s actual sand laid on so you’re not face-planting onto the shingle. Get down there and either perv or participate – beach volleyball is where it’s at for the summer.

Brighton’s increasingly colourful walls didn’t let us down when the Beastie Boys’ MCA sadly died last month. Local graff god Aroe has sprayed up a jaw-dropping tribute in the shape of the crumpled plane from the band’s debut album sleeve, ‘Licensed To Ill’. It’s down the side of the Co-op food place on London Road if you fancy a gawp at his work. In further tribute, Sticky Mike’s host Gratitude, an evening of nothing but Beastie Boys tracks, on Mon 4th, raising funds for Cancer Research UK.

Miss World might be a prehistoric pageant from the past, but add some eco attraction to the mix and it’s all about the now. Miss Earth is in its 12th year and local hopeful Kirsty Brachman is representing Brighton in the national final in glamorous Weston-super-Mare. It does have a green agenda about it – finalists are all expected to turn lights off and recycle a bunch of stuff as part of their day-to-day lives – so we’re right behind Kirsty in her title bid. Unearth Miss Earth info at missearthgirls.co.uk.

NEW MUSIC? YOU BET

If you’ve ever been to the Rendezvous Casino down the Marina, trying to win some dough for a night out, or maybe just to buy your mum a caravan, you might have noticed there was no live music there. Of course, if you were on a winning streak, you might not. But now there is. This month, their Rivva Room begins hosting Saturday Night Live with new music and bands. It’s free to get in, so it’s worth taking a look at the line-ups at rendezvouscasino.com/brighton.

Page 4

By the time you read this, the local skating community will be coming to terms with the loss of Roller Central in Shoreham. Going against the advice of its own Planning Officer, Adur District Council has refused a new licence, citing noise complaints from just two nearby houseboat owners. The indoor skating venue was scheduled for closure at the end of May, although there will be an appeal so fingers crossed. Brighton Rockers roller derby team, who were based there, will move their training to Sussex University.

We went on that Brighton Wheel recently – a more underwhelming way to spend eight quid we can’t remember. You’re not even allowed to rock the pods. For those with aspirations to view beyond the roof of Revenge, though, that long-talked-about i360 tower thing in front of the West Pier has finally been given the go-ahead for 2014. At 175 metres high, it should offer a proper view of Brighton and beyond, and provide an unrivalled spit launch platform for bunking-off schoolboys. Whether or not there’s anything worth seeing when you get up there, of course, is a matter for debate.

If you like to sample Belgian beers without recourse to wallet strain, these free tastings will appeal. A pair of drinks experts and Edinburgh Fringe veterans are touring Brighton boozers with complimentary kegs for you to sample while they crack gags and educate participants in beer-based history and facts. The first one is at the Open House, Springfield Road on Wednesday 13th – find out when and where the rest are by checking our listings section.

BUSINESS BOOMING

With the economy going down quicker than John Travolta’s masseurs (allegedly), it’s good to see new local business startups weathering the storm and flourishing. A while back we interviewed Brighton company StartBrandAgency, and we’ve teamed up with them to offer a competition-winning business a year of savvy backing and mentoring worth a cool 10 grand. The final shortlist of 10 has been selected – check out their progress at startbrandagency.co.uk.

New in town Words By Nick Coquet, Stuart Huggett, Lizzi Jameson, Jessica Marshall McHattie, Matt Barker, James Kendall

the Blue Man

Brighton is hardly overrun with African eateries so it was with sadness that The Blue Man quietly closed its doors a couple of years ago. But now it’s back in the new two-floor venue on Queen’s Road that used to be The Red Rooms. The idea is that you can pop in for a drink or tapas, or try the daily tagine cooked by Magid, a man who knows his way around North African cuisine. There’s a late licence and live music, so pop in after the pub and enjoy an easygoing drink or two.

Traumfrau

This new monthly club night at the Tube is aimed squarely at “queer girls and their friends”, with a more interesting, intellectual stance than the camp 80s pop nights Kemptown has to offer. If the queues at the last one are anything to judge by, it’s just what Brighton’s been waiting for. It’s inclusive and friendly, with zines, colour-in posters, stickers and a photobooth as well as eclectic music. Traumfrau means ‘ideal woman’ and this is the ideal place to find her.

The Rug Hour

If, like us, you often reminisce about the lost time you spent with a moustache and sizeable chest wig, supping brandy and chomping cigars, we’ve found the solution. There’s a new night at Sticky Mike’s called The Rug Hour, and it promises pretty much the sleaziest fun you can have on a Wednesday without paying. The music policy is as easy-going as Ron Burgundy on Valium, and silk dressing gowns are encouraged. If you can’t behave, be careful.

Starvin’ Marvin’s

It’s been knocking about for a couple of months, but this grub stall by Churchill Square is beginning to be recognised as one of the best central lunch havens in Brighton. Starvin’ Marvin’s

Page 6

the blue man

offers a wide range of baked goods, sandwiches and more dough-based delicacies, with discounts for local businesses. Famed for its saliva-inducing hog roast baguette, Starvin’ Marvin’s is a deli food bar worth checking out.

Work

Riki Tik have launched their new weekend nights with the emphasis being on the cream of Brighton talent. The theory goes, why book one good DJ from the national/international circuit when you can get two great DJs from your doorstep? Hard to argue with that, eh? Work is the name of the Friday night, with Matt Barker and Dennis Castro toiling behind the decks, making you work it with their party targeted “blog dance and jiggy bangers”. So after work, get to Work.

SUSSEX WINE SCHOOL

If your appreciation of wine doesn’t go beyond two-for-a-fiver vials of vile vino, stop reading now. If it does, and you fancy yourself as a sniffer, swiller and spitter, the Sussex Wine School could be right up your alley. The Plateau French restaurant in town is hosting Sussex Wine School’s tastings and teachings to help you impress dates with your corking booze knowledge. This is the latest in a nationwide network of wine schools, so catch up, swot up and sup up. Sussexwineschool.com has all the facts you require.

Pressed Sessions

Pressed Sessions is a new live music night at the Green Door Store that aims to raise musicians’ profiles by making films of their performances. The brainchild of artist-run company Ugli Music (who also offer sound system rental, studio help, tuition and more), the professionally recorded shows will be hosted on pressedsessions.co.uk and other sites favoured by the featured bands. Pressed Sessions launches on June 5th, with Annaca, Time For T, Jenna Bennett and Saharas playing live.

Haunt Sat 1st

The final instalment (for now) of British Sea Power’s Krankenhaus club nights should prove to be the most celebratory of the lot, with the group performing all of their singles live. BSP’s spin-off Jonathan Richman tribute band The Modern Ovens join Brighton & Hove City Brass on the bill, but the night’s wildest curveball will surely come from Fit Les. Yes, Keith Allen’s back, with an Olympic themed pop opera narrated by a chaffinch made homeless by the stadium bulldozers. Uh-huh. (SH)

Liars

Green Door Store Sat 1st

US/Australian trio Liars are one of those very few bands who happily confound expectations with every album release, from their early, searing post-punk disco to more recent experiments in heavy percussion and electronics. The snippets we’ve heard from Liars’ forthcoming sixth album ‘WIXIW’ (pronounced “wish you”, should you wish to impress record shop staff by asking for it without spitting all over the counter), suggest a trip into deep synth tone explorations, but that’s no promise. (SH)

The Time And Space Machine

Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Sat 1st

A five-piece psychedelic band, headed up by DJ and producer Richard Norris (of The Grid, Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve etc), The Time And Space Machine make their live Brighton debut this evening. Heavy on the Hammond and fuzz guitar, TTASM’s guest singers include Raissa Khan-Panni, formerly of The Mummers. Piling on the tripped out vibes are reinvented conceptualist big band Restlesslist, freak-out projectionists the Innerstrings Psychedelic Lightshow and Sticky Mike’s Catholic Discipline DJs. (SH)

Page 8

Give Her The Gun Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Sat 2nd

It’s the ultimate badge of musical snobbery to be able to declare that you saw so-and-so’s first ever show and this is your opportunity to earn that medal. Give Her The Gun leave their place of hiding to transform Sticky Mike’s into an Aladdin’s Cave of audio delights. This Cipher Asylum showcase not only introduces the hitherto fictional rock group (they appear in a series of post-apocalyptic novels) performing their debut show but also features sets from already established Brighton bands Shoot The Dead and Swordfish. (AJM)

JIM BOB

West Hill Hall Sat 2nd

Often derided for being a band who seemingly sold more T-shirts than music, Carter USM still fill multi-thousand capacity venues for their annual reunion gigs. Here’s a chance to see front-man Jim Bob performing solo in a more intimate setting. He’ll also be reading extracts from his second novel ‘Driving Jarvis Ham’. Whilst a spoken word and music mix usually suggests Patti Smith style earnestness, this will be a far more playful and comic proposition, and yes, he’ll be playing some Carter songs. (AP)

Wild World

Four years down the line, Brighton underground champions Sex Is Disgusting bow out with a rather mighty celebration. Frantic clatter-punks Foreign Objects and veteran home recording hero R. Stevie Moore are over from the States to headline; with a mass of Sex Is Disgusting favourites (Mazes, Cold Pumas, Gross Magic, The Sticks and so forth) propping up the bill. Whatever’s left of the label’s catalogue gets flogged off too. We will fight you for a Fear Of Men tape. (SH)

The Dreaming Spires Green Door Store Weds 6th

From Oxford, The Dreaming Spires is the new band from Truck Festival founders Robin and Joe Bennett (formerly of Goldrush and Danny & The Champions Of The World). With a harmonyfilled sound reminiscent of Big Star, by way of Gram Parsons and Teenage Fanclub, tracks from their debut album ‘Brothers In Brooklyn’ have been getting plenty of spins on 6Music, while their recent American tour saw them playing alongside the likes of Mercury Rev and The Jayhawks, and also providing backing for The Band’s Garth Hudson. (IC)

Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby

Prince Albert Thurs 7th

There’s a scene in Chris Petit’s moody 1979 road movie Radio On when the central character puts Wreckless Eric’s Stiff Records classic ‘Whole Wide World’ on the jukebox in a roadside cafe and the camera just can’t move away, transfixed by the song. Never mind Tarantino, if we’re talking music and the movies this stuff is the raw essence. Live, Eric’s pure joy, and he revisits the Albert tonight with partner Amy Rigby. He’s from Newhaven, you know. But he left. (SH)

Qukuleke

Ranelagh Fri 8th

There’s something quintessentially ‘Brighton’ about Qukulele: nine LGBT women in loud Hawaiian shirts playing unplugged ukulele mashups of disco, punk, soul and pop hits, with the odd TV theme tune thrown in. They’re your hosts for this quirky variety show to kickstart the summer, which also features soul singer Nicki Heywood and two local comediennes. It’s all in aid of Brighton Women’s Centre across the road. Admission is free and open to all. (AP)

Austra

Haunt Sat 9th

Wonderful Canadian group Austra, lead by one-woman vocal symphony Katie Stelmanis, return to The Haunt for their

second appearance in Brighton since the release of their acclaimed debut album ‘Feel It Break’. If that wonderfully inventive release, with all its timeless, alternative pop hooks, isn’t enough to entice you to the venue, then please take our word for it that their classy, upbeat live set is designed for the hairs on the back of your neck. (TR)

Andrew Bird

Theatre Royal Sun 10th

Stunningly talented multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird trained as a classical violinist, but he’s turned his traditional background into a heavenly setting for experimental folk, pop and jazz, with clever lyrics and layers of electronic sampling. His live performances are said to be always unique and fed by the audience’s reaction, and he’s probably the only person who’s allowed to whistle in songs without us wanting to punch his jolly face. ‘Break It Yourself,’ his latest album, was released in March to typically universal awe. (JMM)

Sunn O)))

Coalition Sun 10th

At the height of their 90s pop success, The KLF began recording ‘The Black Room’, a dense, heavy and ultimately unreleased counterpart to their hit album ‘The White Room’. With their hooded robes, suffocating dry ice and tolling guitars of doom, Sunn O))) are ‘The Black Room’ manifested through two drone metal acolytes, although Earth are their acknowledged inspirations. Tonight’s quadraphonic show promises to be heavier than Sunn O)))’s already monolithic standards, the sound enveloping the crowd from every direction. (SH)

Moon Duo

Green Door Store Tues 12th

The sound of a really heavy party round Suicide’s house, Moon Duo comprise impressively bearded Wooden Shjips guitarist Ripley Johnson and his partner Sanae Yanada. Last year’s strikingly designed ‘Mazes’ found the San Francisco pair mixing droning guitar, revved-up organ and rattling drum machines to wonderful effect: a companion volume introduced remixes from such likeminded garage obsessives as Gary War and Sonic Boom. This could be quite a mind frazzler. (SH)

Flash Bang Band

Hope Weds 20th

Before you pull your pants over your tights, you may be surprised to hear that this is not a comic book-themed club night. Flash Bang Band is an alternative indie trio who offer artsy self-descriptions such as “anthropogenic”, “experimental rock” and “psychedelic punk”. If the band spend as much time rehearsing for their shows as they do googling synonyms then you’ll be in for a good night. However, your Spiderman outfit will have to stay unworn a little longer. Song Of Miriam Green Door Store Weds 20th

Chances are you’ve heard the music of 20th century composer Kurt Weill even if you’ve never been near a concert hall, thanks to the ease with which pieces of his work were assimilated into the canon of pop (from ‘Mack The Knife’ to ‘Alabama Song’). American bassist Jair-Rôhm Parker Wells’ “avant-garde jazz” arrangements of Weill’s music are brought to life tonight by guests including ‘Lucky Number’ hitmaker Lene Lovich, offbeat cellist Bela Emerson and MC5/White Panthers-affiliated poet John Sinclair. (SH)

Best Coast

Coalition Thurs 21st

Lyrics on Best Coast’s recent album ‘The Only Place’ such as “we always have fun” or “I wake up to the morning sun” could lead you to dismiss the American duo as a pair of middleweights, set upon writing pop with a country and western simplicity. However, Best Coast can lay claim to being pop champions at their own particular weight. The easy-going, effortlessly pleasurable journey they take you on could only be made by Californians, rich as it is in its bleached aesthetic and warming retro glow. (TR)

Hillfolk Noir

Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Thurs 21st

Hailing from Idaho, Hillfolk Noir come to town as part of their debut UK tour, following the release of their new album ‘Radio Hour’. Their sound is a unique country-tinged, swampy-

swinging mix of bluegrass, delta-blues, and ragtime that one moment embraces praising the lord while loading your Winchester, and the next flirting with drinking moonshine from a jagged mason jar while the devil looks over your shoulder. Fans of the likes of Charlie Parr and Frank Fairfield should most definitely take notice. (IC)

Less Than Jake Concorde 2 Thurs 21st

We saw Less Than Jake a decade ago, and they’re still going strong. If you like bouncy, irrepressible rhymes and men in their late 30s singing about teenage rebellion, this is for you. The veterans of ska punk celebrated their 20th year of releases in February with ‘Seasons Greetings From Less Than Jake,’ which sounds pretty much exactly like they did way back. If you liked them as a youth, and your musical tastes haven’t changed, go. (JMM)

Kate Nash

Haunt Thurs 21st

With Lily Allen allegedly returning to the studio, many are expecting a revival of 2007’s spoken-word Britpop. However Kate Nash seems to be breaking away from all that. Her last show in the city saw breakthrough hit ‘Foundations’ omitted from her set list in favour of a load of riot grrrl-influenced material. This return to Brighton could make or break her local reputation. Who will she alienate and who will she win over? Either way, if she doesn’t play a certain song, somebody will leave grumbling. (AJM)

Two Spot Gobi Latest Music Bar Thurs 21st

Described as “alternative organic pop”, it would be easy to mistake this indie band for a vegan drink sold at Infinity Foods. Having recorded their debut live album in London last month, Two Spot Gobi return to the city they formed in for what’s being billed as their only full-length gig in town this summer. Fresh from opening for Bob Geldof at the Concorde 2, the band transform into headliners with support from fellow Brighton based artist Woodland Blue. (AJM)

This Canadian solo artist is something of a music machine, with at least six albums in the last couple of years. His mellow pieces of dorky pop have been compared to everyone from Twin Shadow to Cat Stevens, with a clever mixture of crooning grooves and whistle-it simplicity. when gloria cycles split we thought we’d never see their bassist back on stage but her new solo project is shaping up to be an even greater success The end of Gloria Cycles was an emotional affair. A packed house at what is now The Blind Tiger saw cheers and tears, and one of the faces that was a little wet belonged to bassist Jen Dalby. But that’s to be expected. Here was a band with an abundance of both great songs and fans. It seemed like they were just one step away from breaking through, but six years at the indie coalface proved just too much. Half the band moved from music to photography (singer Kenny Mc Cracken now regularly shoots the SOURCE covers) and it’s taken until now for the rhythm section to return. First up, drummer Jack Hannan has a new single, ‘Hey!’, with his rap band Mok. However Jen was the Kim Deal to Kenny’s Black Francis. Like the Pixies, when Gloria Cycles’ female bassist took to a rare journey to the mic the place lit up. For the Cycles it was the heartfelt ballad ‘If I Wanted To Tell You’, where Jen’s backing vocal added a fragility to Kenny’s raw passion. But, as special as her vocals were, we never expected to see her take to the spotlight. With her new solo project, Jennifer Left, though, she revels in it. Kind of. “I miss the bass because I could hide behind it,” she admits. “I feel naked now. I never know what to do with my hands so I’m always clinging on to the mic stand. I just really feel quite weird. But I’m getting there. There was a while when I couldn’t even open my eyes. I was like, ‘You’re looking at me, you’re really in the room.’ But I’m getting over that. It’s just practice, but if you’re gonna do it you’ve got to do it.” The first single is ‘Black Dog’, a jaunty, grown up piece of Parisian café pop that will have you whistling along with the hook from first listen. But the rhythmic jazz guitar hides a darker subject matter hinted at with the title. “It’s about my sister,” Jen explains. “She has a few little demons in there. I love her but she’s bonkers and she’s sometimes got quite a stubborn temper. So this is me being a big sister, saying, ‘Chill out, nothing’s as bad as it seems. Don’t beat yourself up.’” It’s a very different kettle of fish to Gloria Cycle’s ska-tinged power pop. The new project came about when Tim Bidwell – producer of Kate Walsh, Fink and Peggy Sue – said that he loved Jen’s voice and would like to make an album with her. She admitted that she probably couldn’t write an album on bass so they drafted in their mutual friend Ewan Wallace from Bonobo’s band. Jen made him a CD of the things she liked, including Feist and Sarah Blasko, and lots of swing and jazz, from Glenn Miller to Billie Holiday via Django Reinhardt. “It’s mainly from working in the Hand In Hand for seven years,” she explains. “Sunday nights in there is where the Django Reinhardt style of music came

www.brightonsource.co.uk/bands

from. But I’m not sure Ewan even listened to the CD – none of that really comes across in the music, but when we started there was swing in it.” Actually you can hear little hints of all of those artists in the first couple of songs released. ‘Black Dog’ is backed with ‘Hushabye’, a breathy ballad with gentle glockenspiel licks that sounds just as timeless as the a-side. The songs come together in a rather unusual way. Tim and Ewan get together and thrash out some ideas that they email to Jen, who “paces around” her living room before recording vocals and melodies in GarageBand to send back. “I write down lots of poems – observational stuff – and try to fit it in where I can,” she says. “If I can’t think of any words I’ll just go ‘shoobedy doobedy doo’ and we’ll see what words fit it afterwards.” It seems to be working, as Jen has a whole album ready to release and she’s already got a bevy of great gigs under her belt. Supporting Turin Brakes at St Bartholomew’s Church was a highlight. “You always see all the skagheads hanging about outside, and there’s bars on the windows,” she says. “I walked in texting and looked up and, wow, I wasn’t expecting that. It’s beautiful.” Also special was her very first gig that saw one of Jen’s heroes Sarah Blasko come up and say how much she enjoyed it. “I thought, ‘Oh my god you’re Sarah Blasko,’” smiles Jen. “I didn’t let her know I’d twigged in case she thought I was a freak.” When Jen played the very first SOURCE New Music last year the crowd was so enthusiastic that they demanded Jen come back out for an encore, despite the fact she had no more songs to play. They happily danced away to the first song of the set for a second time though. “Yeah, I need to work on that,” she says. “Well, there’s two new songs that are ready to go – they’ll be up and running for the next gig so maybe I’ll hold one back, in case.” But we have to ask, what happened with Gloria Cycles. Did Jen jack it in because she wanted to go solo? “I actually didn’t want to do music anymore,” she says. “We were together six years – they were like my brothers, in each others pockets the whole time. I got a little bit tired and negative and just thought ‘Right, career hat on now. I’ve kind of done that and had a wonderful time but thank you and goodnight.’” Once life settled down she realised that she missed music and that was when she decided to give it another go. Only not hell for leather this time. “That band was committed,” she laughs. “Boyfriends and girlfriends came second – it was the four of us together no matter what. But we still get slammed on tequilas and reminisce about all the tomfoolery, so yeah, it’s fine.”

For all Jen’s wishes to go easy this time, we think that she’s going to get pretty busy soon. On the day of our interview two 6music DJs picked ‘Black Dog’ to play on their shows. SINGLE: ‘Black Dog’ out on Mon 5th Selfishly we just want to put off LIVE: Single Launch at The Blind Tiger on Tues 19th the farewell gig for as long as WEB: jenniferleft.com possible – we’re not quite ready for another one.

Words By Matt Barker, Zac Colbert, Stuart Huggett, Jessica Marshall McHattie, James Kendall

Coconut College Haunt Thurs 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th

Haunt head honcho Henron told us he wanted to make a midweek night with “just good music” and while that’s very subjective we can see where he’s coming from. Weekdays have become very much about the pop, so it’s welcoming to see the genreless hip party music of Coconut College arrive on Thursdays. Yacht and Metronomy rub shoulders with Chromeo and Blood Orange for a night of pretty cool (but not boringly cool) party tunes. The booze is pretty cheap too and it’s only a couple of quid in. (JK)

Big Beach Bootique Amex Stadium Fri 1st-Sat 2nd

It’s not at the beach anymore, but up at the Amex Stadium, that gaping grey vulva that lies between the rolling green hills of Falmer. At least they’re putting it to good use, as Fatboy Slim rolls out his big beat sound at a spectacular two-day event. Friday’s line-up includes dance music pioneer Carl Cox, who’s been making raves bounce for three decades. Cox was playing with triple turntables before most us were even conceived. There’s also The 2 Bears, who will be bumping out their own brand of dad house, plus new queen of the UK dance scene Maya Jane Coles. Saturday’s line-up is equally formidable, boasting bass music princess Annie Mac alongside sci-fi dubsteppers Nero and Radio 1’s own Mini Mix master Jaguar Skills. They’re in good company with DJ Fresh and Doorly, who’ll no doubt bring that unhinged glitchy house amalgamation that made ‘Bonkers’ such a hit two summers ago. The sun’s out and the shorts are on, so it’s time to rave it up with a 48-year-old. (ZC)

Critical Sound

Life Fri 1st

These guys should be called Critical Condition, because last time they took over Life that’s how they left us. Critical Sound’s line-ups always include the finest new talent in drum’n’bass and this evening boasts one of the biggest. Enei’s cavernous sonics are sparse and murky, taking as much from early Bad Company as they do from more recent minimal stuff out on Metalheadz. He’s a producer going from strength to strength and this is his Brighton debut, so if you want to claim “I saw him before he was mainstream” get down early. (ZC)

Tensnake

Audio Fri 1st

One of the biggest hits of 2010, Tensnake’s ‘Coma Cat’ was a clean and joyful piece of 80s electropop that pushed him to the top of the house tree. Mixing disco grooves, proto-house beats and pop melodies in a similar way to Aeroplane, his productions are made for the dancefloor but are accessible enough that you’ll be whistling them when you get home. When he played at Schtumm last time, a year ago, it was roadblocked so don’t piss about on the ticket buying front. (JK)

Intec Digital

Fri 1st Coalition

Carl Cox’s label Intec Digital is synonymous with underground techno and hosting parties that require three days to recover from. They’ll be taking over Brighton Coalition ‘til the early hours of Saturday morning with Jon Rundell, whose minimal stomper ‘Knick Knack’, with its feathery cymbals and echoing snare, was a Beatport number 1, and Trevor Rockcliffe, who’s been a champion of the scene since the 80s. Plus, there’s supposed to be a very special guest, we wonder who that could be...(ZC)

FATLIP

Originate

Volks Fri 1st

Originate are hosting an old skool special with 2 Bad Mice topping the bill. Anyone who was playing records in the 90s would have dropped the venerable classic ‘Bombscare’ at one point or another – its furry, clattering break and rave chords are still irresistible. These UK hardcore innovators will be playing an exclusive 88-90 acid house set for those of you who think it was done better way back when. They’re joined by warehouse ravers Shut Up & Dance, who will undoubtedly make you do just that. (ZC)

Hospitality

Digital Sun 3rd

It’s good to see Hospital Records branch out for their latest line-up. Sigma’s soulful liquid beats earned them immediate respect on the scene and as a result they’ve collaborated regularly with DJ Fresh, Danny Breaks and others. Their tunes sound like a wave of ecstasy flooding your synapses as the sun comes up, with warm basslines and crunchy Amen breaks, melodic tracks like ‘Stronger’ and ‘All Blue’ should go well with headlining buddy Cyantific. It’s a bank holiday so Nu:Tone and Wilkinson will be ensuring your Monday’s a write-off. (ZC)

Todd Edwards

Life Fri 8th

Pioneering US garage producer Todd Edwards has been mercilessly bruising club sound systems since before most freshers were born, and this year’s EP ‘Shall Go’ shows he’s not going to be going soft any time soon. This is the after party of Brighton Uni’s Faculty Of The Arts Private View, and all profits from the night go to supporting them putting on more exhibitions. It seems somehow right to celebrate their artistic innovation with the producer responsible for producing some of the biggest dance hits from the past two decades. (JMM)

Fatlip

Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Sat 9th

As one third of legendary hip hop mavens The Pharcyde, Fatlip’s hitting our own sticky bar to lay down that classic ish, drop some beats, wow the heads and all the rest of it. He’ll be playing all the songs that influenced him in this DJ set, as well as the freshest new tunes he’s enjoying. Support comes from Brighton’s most committed hip hop DJs Spin Doctor, Ruff Snippets, Tappa and Louis Headnod. (JMM)

Joy Orbison

Digital Sat 9th

Joy Orbison delighted our lugholes last year with the sultry future house affair that was ‘Sicko Cell’. Driven by crisp 808 beats and disco chords the tune featured in almost every club set we heard last year and propelled the producer into headliner heights. His recognisably individual style could be attributed to his varied influences, from Ray Keith to The Beach Boys via J Dilla. In support is Ben UFO and your affable hosts, the Blah Blah Blah DJs. (ZC)

Route 1

Globe Sat 9th

Following on from a frankly storming launch night, the Route 1 fellows are taking their well-stocked disco bags to the Globe’s friendly environs. As always, the boon of living in a town with so many quality DJs is that you can see them doing their own thing – for free in this case – and not pay what punters across Europe have to for the same experience. Sumsuch – confirmed deep disco don heads the lineup, but frankly, the whole crew supply good vibes and great tunes. (MB)

Mute Speaker

Globe Fri 15th

The Globe already has some of our favourite pub features, with musty old books, board games and fantastic Caribbean roasts, and now it’s got a good soundtrack for your Friday night too. Local beat maestro Mute Speaker’s just released his album ‘Post Block’ and, far from being mute, it’s a genre-distorting, multi-influenced beast you’ll want to turn up loud. He’ll be playing all the songs he loves tonight so expect hip hop, LA beats, funk and er, “space boogie.” Hark!Mammal and Murder He Wrote are supporting. (JMM)

Imbue

Green Door Store Fri 22nd

You’re probably already familiar with street artist Imbue. He’s the one responsible for covering the city with all those détourned stickers for The Sun, Life and Hello, although his greatest stunt was smuggling (fake) heroin and cocaine vending machines onto the Pier. No wonder the broadsheets have dubbed him “the Banksy of Brighton”. Imbue’s free, one night exhibition at the Green Door features DJs from Hit And Hope records, mash-up films, popcorn and freshly made screen prints for early arrivals. (SH)

Maxxi Soundsystem

Audio Sat 23rd

This former SOURCE cover star played a packed out closing show at the Corn Exchange for last month’s Great Escape’s finale. And no wonder there was a queue as far as the eye could see – his dreamy future disco transports you to another world. Combining his own productions and remixes with classic tracks and those hot off the press, his blissfully grooving sets are about as close as you’ll come to time travel. It’s free before midnight you’d be a Maxxi fool not to make it. (ZC)

CLUB REVIEW

Below The Line Words and photos Jessica Marshall McHattie

Not content with being just a club night, the Below The Line boys have a live-streamed TV show on Friday nights, and a blog highlighting the most exciting releases in future bass music. But that doesn’t mean any less attention is paid to the clubs; they’ve been putting on some of the best line-ups in town over the last few months and tonight’s certainly no exception. Local Below The Line DJs Alors Cors, Murder He Wrote and Ferndown Mistake provide the warm-up soundtrack, and before long Life’s filled with anticipation, expensive hats and sloshing drinks.

FYI

Headliner Kahn is Bristol’s premier beat-maker, releasing superb single ‘Illy’ on Punch Drunk last year, and it’s bizarre he hasn’t been booked in Brighton before. His vinyl-only grime set goes down very well, as do supports from the up-andcoming Bwana and Ziro. This is a night that combines cutting-edge music with a crowd that’s there to have fun. It’s a brilliant combination.

Comedy: Simon Amstell Numb Dome Sat 2nd

Ever since he returned to our screens with his self-referential sitcom Grandma’s House, it’s been hard to come up with any critical view on the precociously talented Simon Amstell that he hasn’t already deconstructed himself. He still carries with him a lot of the love accumulated on his joyful stints presenting Popworld and Never Mind The Buzzcocks, even as his comedy moves into more personal and painful territories. At least he’s smart enough to keep his sense of humour. (SH)

Talk: Charlie Gates Corn Exchange Sat 2nd

Charlie Gates is a vegetarian, a milliner, and a startling taxidermist. Under the guise of Mind Like Magpie, she’s doing a talk at Brighton Fashion Week’s Ready To Wear show on how to craft hats from any junk you have lying around. If you’ve got a lot of weddings coming up, here’s how to give Aunt Doris a real shock. Her hats are bold, fun and colourful, but we’re hoping she doesn’t bring any roadkill with her. (JMM)

Theatre: Love’s Labour’s Lost Old Market Thurs 7th - Fri 8th

The Globe To Globe strand of this year’s World Shakespeare Festival is an ambitious undertaking to perform each of the Bard’s 37 plays in a different language, and for early comedy Love’s Labour’s Lost that performance takes place in British Sign Language. Deafinitely Theatre’s production takes place with signing and music only, turning Shakespeare’s complex, punning text into a physical event that brings a new understanding of the play to both deaf and hearing audience members, whatever their first language. (SH)

Talk: The Space

Komedia Thurs 7th

Media hobnobbing doesn’t get any better than this – Slade’s Noddy Holder and Muppets producer Martin Baker interviewed by Briggy Smale in front of a business cardswapping and question-asking audience. Don’t get your questions mixed up though – asking “Who was that Muppet in the band with the funny hair?” to the wrong guest might lead to your premature ejection. It was Dave Hill, though – no two ways about it. (NC)

Film: Whip It

Duke of York’s Fri 8th

As Brighton gets gripped by roller derby fever, there’s never been a better time to revisit Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut. An indie-cool feelgood sports film for people who hate sport, Ellen ‘Juno’ Page gets dragged from the staid world of beauty pageants into the rough and tumble of derby life. It’s a lot of fun, but if it’s still not enough then the Brighton Rockers will be there in full kit, showing their Love Skate Relationship short. This late showing ought to get a bit rowdy. (JK)

Film: Prometheus

Theatre: Medea

When a film has been as long awaited as this prequel to Ridley Scott’s 1979 sci-fi scintillator Alien, you tend to approach it with a little trepidation. It hasn’t been 33 years, of course, but the fifth part of the series was mooted about ten years ago, and the budget has expanded to ominously stratospheric levels. Michael Fassbender is the imposter android with a superiority complex, Charlize Theron is a villainous morph, and overall – don’t quote us – it should enthrall. (BM)

Whoa – this tale of a murderous jilted wife will, apparently, “radically transform” New Venture into “an innovative and exciting performance space like you’ve never seen before”. Quite some claim for a place known for taking a risk or two with the most straightforward of texts, but one likely to ring true considering this vengeful Greek tragedy was written by playwright forefather Euripides and premiered in 431 BC. Oftproduced since, the bug-eyed classic remains a full-blooded theatrical force to this day. (BM)

The E word is on everybody’s cider-stained lips at the Caz this month, and it’s nothing to do with The Shamen. Downstairs it’s midriff-baring business as usual in everyone’s favourite pooltastic goth haunt, but upstairs Edinburgh has never seemed so close for a stellar list of comedians road testing mirthful utterances before they hit Scotland. Ranting loon Phil Nichol (Mon 18th), love victim Nick Helm (Weds 20th), cock obsessive Richard Herring (Tues 26th) and casual psychologist Lucy Porter (Weds 27th) are this month’s four angling for your giggles. Film: Your Sister’s Sister Duke of York’s from Fri 29th

Honestly, we know you crave action (see Prometheus), and yes, big screen scripts which embrace bits of ad-lib can result in some of the most frustrating formlessness known to humanity, but even the most strident mumblecore mutineer couldn’t deride Lynn Shelton’s peep inside the mind’s eye of loss, love, confusion and sibling ways. A shot-fuelled one night stand on a remote island sparks things off, and star turns from Emily Blunt and Mark Duplass surf on a witty, warm, subtle story. (BM)

SINGLE: GUY ANDREWS

The Wait / Hands In Mine (Hotflush Recordings)

After his ‘Shades / Textures’ release on Hemlock last year, Brighton-based producer Guy Andrews has been attracting more and more attention for his techno, house and UK bass sounds. ‘The Wait’ is a modern techno tune that’d have Berghain heaving and even the most discerning listener toetapping relentlessly. ‘Hands In Mine’ seamlessly slips genres, starting out as a progressive, deep house rhythm and sliding into a heavy techno/bass fusion, with atmospheric tension building throughout. Double A* for this double a-side. (JMM)

ALBUM: MUTE SPEAKER Post Block (self-released)

Prolific local producer Mute Speaker has just made an album with perhaps the most diverse and far-spread collaborations we’ve seen this year. All beats are his own and the celestial artwork is by local graphic designer Alfonso Cruz Castillo, but the vocals have been sourced from as far as Sheffield, Italy, LA and Macedonia. The warm and sultry beats of ‘Day By Day ft. Shiula’ are our favourite, but it’s a close call. Stream all 22 tracks at mute-speaker.bandcamp.com. (JMM)

BOOK: CHEEKY WALKS IN BRIGHTON & SUSSEX Cheeky Guides

If your country brogues see more of the Green Door Store than England’s green and pleasant land, then this should motivate you into heaving your sorry hipster arse out into the open air for a constitutional. It’s full of pop culture and local knowledge – including a topical film suggestion to complete each walk – and if your weekends are too debauched to cope with greenery there are city walks to turn the tedious quest for Rizla into a rewarding round trip via the corner shop. (RK)

SINGLE: SUAVE DEBONAIR Play Your Game ft. Pete Cannon (self-released)

Having clocked up thousands of YouTube views for his comic guest rap on the original, explicit version of Stooshe’s ‘Love Me’ (kids, if you’ve not heard it, check your folks aren’t in the room before pressing ‘search’), Brighton MC Suave Debonair

Page 34

suave debonair

builds his profile further with this crossover track. Dropping easily graspable references over solid stomping beats, Suave announces his commitment to the new woman in his life, perhaps not entirely seriously. It’s bright, daft, and tooled for daytime play. (SH)

ALBUM: DONNA FULLMAN Inner World (Lyrically Speaking)

Londoner Donna Fullman came to Brighton when she got into BIMM on the strength of her voice alone, so it’s fitting that ‘By The Fire’, the opening track on this debut album, begins with her a capella singing. Fullman’s vocals are soft and restrained throughout ‘Inner World’, matching the relaxed musical atmosphere conjured by former My Little Problem fellow Simon Janes. The black velvet folksiness of Fullman’s songs suits a late night listen, so please don’t operate any heavy machinery. (SH)

SINGLE: SLEEPIN’ GIANTZ Badungdeng (Tru Thoughts)

Sleepin’ Giantz is a collaboration between Manc garage producer Zed Bias, former London Posse man Rodney P and fellow UK hip hop innovator Fallacy. After appearing on this spring’s installment of Tru Thoughts’ limited ‘Black Gold’ series, the irresistibly bouncy ‘Badungdeng’ is sensibly getting a full standalone release. “It’s raving time again” promise Sleepin’ Giantz, over speaker-busting bass wobbles, something we’re happy to go along with if these body-movin’ beats are the soundtrack. (SH)

ALBUM: AMONGST THE PIGEONS

Get Amongst It (Marowak Records)

Producer Charlie Thompson returns with his second Amongst The Pigeons album, once again enlisting an impressive set of guest vocalists including fellow Brighton residents Chris T-T and Stick In A Pot. ATP (that acronym must cause confusion among the international tennis playing/indie rock fraternities) mixes up rhythms ranging from gentle loops to springy disco, with a handful of random, sometimes nonsensical, samples scattered around. The song-orientated tracks are the obvious picks, but ATP’s restless imagination throws up plenty of inspired moments. (SH)

The Great Escape Inescapable city music festival triumphs again Words by stuart huggett photos by kevin mason and matt martin at create studios The Great Escape festival paid its annual visit to Brighton last month, swelling the streets with hundreds of musicians and industry figures, and thousands more fans. The sun beat down for the almost the whole weekend, leading to some rammed daytime showcases (the queues outside tiny Shipwrights Yard stretched right up Middle Street) and much chaotic mingling between the optimistic buskers, displaced Fringe performers and harassed music industry executives on New Road. As always, The Great Escape’s hottest buzz bands caused roadblock chaos in some of Brighton’s smaller venues (Django Django at the Blind Tiger? Friends at Horatio’s? Good luck with that), while a surprise Coalition appearance from Aiden Grimshaw found the X Factor star’s under-18 fans straining to listen to the sounds coming up through the pavement. We’ve all been there. SOURCE sent out a crack team of writers and photographers to capture as much of the music (and free beer) as possible: their reviews are on the website, and here’s the pick of the pics.

Festivals EXTRA More festival action – some very close to home Words Stuart Huggett, Ben Miller

Kemptown Carnival June 9th / Kemptown, Brighton / Free 0 miles from Brighton

HEADLINERS: John Crampton, Fat 45, The Swing Ninjas DON’T MISS: Kalakuta Millionaires, Monsters Build Mean Robots Kemptown’s annual community festival returns with dozens of street performers, children’s entertainers and market stalls in a riot of colour. From the opening Parade Of Flowers to its messy conclusion with the Grand Custard Pie Fight, the Kemptown Carnival brings fun for all to the streets. Musically, it’s the bigger the better, as swollen ranks of some of the city’s favourite swing, funk and Latin bands crowd the multiple stages. (SH) IN A NUTSHELL: A lively, always popular, day of family fun.

Brighton Japan 2012

June 22nd – 30th / Various venues / Various prices 0 miles from Brighton

HEADLINERS: The Paper Cinema, No Cars DON’T MISS: Ken Kobayashi Those saucy sushi sorcerers at Moshi Moshi oversee this annual jovial Japanese jaunt at Bartholomew Square and beyond. Highlights include retro gaming at Marwood’s Cafe, an open-air anime festival, mindfulness workshops and a kaleidoscopic Matsuri (summer festival) in the square itself. Many key events, including a theatrical evening with The Paper Cinema, live music and a screening of reliable pant-soiler The Ring, take place at Moshi Moshi’s 70-seater HOMU venue, so advance booking (at the restaurant, or brightonjapan.com) is recommended. (BM) IN A NUTSHELL: An unmissable eight-day taste of Japanese culture.

Gladstonebury

June 29th – July 1st / The Gladstone, Lewes Road, Brighton / Free 0 miles from Brighton

HEADLINERS: Tragic Roundabout, Dr Bluegrass & The Illbilly 8 DON’T MISS: Buffo’s Wake Even the most cider addled Somerset stoner would have hard job mistaking this bright yellow Brighton pub for the Vale of

Avalon, but since there’s bugger all going on down Pilton way this year, you take your fun where it’s offered. The Gladstone’s mini-festival is still music-stuffed, however, with a smattering of traditional sideshows (apple bobbing, hula hooping) thrown in. It’s free entry, but donations wouldn’t go amiss. (SH) IN A NUTSHELL: In the absence of its namesake, spending the weekend in the pub is really rather appealing.

Twisted Frontier

July 5th – 7th / Various venues / Various prices 0 miles from Brighton

HEADLINERS: Jake Mackay, Jipsy Magic, Rough Citizen DON’T MISS: Hope Rudd, The Watermelons For a two-man ship, the Overhead Wires team sure are productive – hosting several gigs a week, distributing that monthly Pantograph newsletter, and still finding time to release CDs, most recently by this weekend’s headliners Jake Mackay and Jipsy Magic. Twisted Frontier is Overhead Wires’ first multi-day, multi-venue event, showcasing many of the musicians they’ve forged links with during their tireless monitoring of the region’s new band and open mic nights. They’re shooting a film too - blimey. (SH) IN A NUTSHELL: An ambitious, wide-ranging celebration of Brighton’s songwriting talent.

Bloc

July 6th – 7th / London Pleasure Gardens, Royal Victoria Dock / £99

62 miles from Brighton HEADLINERS: Snoop Dogg, Orbital DON’T MISS: Jeff Mills, Battles, DOOM Although Bloc’s move away from its usual Butlins base will deprive regulars of the pool pleasures of Splash Waterworld this year, the aquatic link survives with performances on a former GDR deep sea fishing vessel, the MS Stubnitz, moored at the Royal Victoria Dock. Dive! Dive! Or, rather, fish! Bloc’s line-up is another impressive, wide-ranging trawl through international waters, leaning heavily, but not exclusively, on electronic fare. Possibly the only UK festival where punters will be outnumbered by seagulls. (SH) IN A NUTSHELL: No resting on their laurels for Britain’s number one electronic music festival.

Paddle Round The Pier July 7th – 8th / Hove Lawns / Free 0 miles from Brighton

HEADLINERS: Boy Com, Letz Zep DON’T MISS: The Beautiful Word, Buster Shuffle, The pUkes What began as a surfer-run charity fundraiser has grown into a big weekend of family entertainment, encompassing on and off-land sports demonstrations, energetic amusements for the kids, and two stages of live music (the popular, Tuaca sponsored main stage, and a new ukulele specialist one). This year the big paddle benefits the RNLI, Surf Action and Winston’s Wish charities, so if you’re not taking part yourself, do the decent thing, dig deep and donate. (SH) IN A NUTSHELL: There’s always fun to be had at PRTP, especially when the sun’s out.

GuilFest

July 13th – 15th / Stoke Park, Guildford / £130 45 miles from Brighton

HEADLINERS: Jools Holland, Olly Murs, Bryan Ferry DON’T MISS: Chic, Candi Staton Having clocked up 20 years on the calendar, GuilFest has become one of the UK’s sturdiest bets in the notoriously fickle mid-size festival market. Saturday’s main stage finds X Factor friendly stars Tulisa and Cher Lloyd supporting chipper headliner Olly Murs, with numerous pop and punk survivors (ABC, Buzzcocks, Numan) filling out the bill. Guildford’s more hedonistic youth will surely make a beeline for Benga, Andy C and Sub Focus in the Dance Tent. (SH) IN A NUTSHELL: A established family festival with broad musical appeal.

Latitude

July 12th – 15th / Henham Park, Southwold, Suffolk / £175 158 miles from Brighton

HEADLINERS: Bon Iver, Elbow, Paul Weller DON’T MISS: St Vincent, Clock Opera, Perfume Genius Situated on a beautiful stretch of Suffolk’s ‘Sunrise Coast’,

Page 40

Latitude’s reputation rests on its broader than the norm range of stage entertainments, second only to Glastonbury in scope. Theatre, literature, comedy and film are all well represented, including high end shows from the National Theatre and Sadler’s Wells. Keep an eye out for a diverse mix of Brighton musicians old (The Levellers) and new (Tall Ships) too. (SH) IN A NUTSHELL: It’s like a broadsheet Sunday supplement, with trees.

Dromos Festival

July, various dates / West Sussex / Free 22+ miles from Brighton

HEADLINERS: TBC DON’T MISS: TBC A rootless festival of culture, now in its second year, Dromos showcases music, theatre, dance and more, by regional and national talents, in rural locations across West Sussex. Sites confirmed so far include Church Farm, Coombes (July 15th) and Horsham Park (21st), as well as some involvement in East Grinstead’s Olympic celebrations (17th), but expect further dates and venues to be confirmed as the bill starts coming together. Keep an eye on dromosfestival.co.uk to see how it all shapes up. (SH) IN A NUTSHELL: A travelling family festival, promising a wide array of attractions.

Festival No. 6

September 14th – 16th / Portmeirion, Wales / £129 300 miles from Brighton

HEADLINERS: New Order, Primal Scream, Spiritualized DON’T MISS: Toy, Savages, Y Niwl What do you want? Information. Situated in the stunning, fake Italian village of Portmeirion, Festival No. 6 – as any cult TV aficionado will have spotted – is unafraid to play up to its connections to The Prisoner. It’s brand new for 2012, but the setting and headliners are extremely promising. Whether they’ll go the whole hog and employ giant floating balls as perimeter security remains to be seen, but we really hope so. (SH) IN A NUTSHELL: Be seeing you.

STREET STYLE PHOTO BY KEVIN MEREDITH AT LOMOKEV.COM/STYLE WORDS BY HAYLEY SIMPSON

At 15 we never looked this cool. When Edith isn’t busy revising for her mock GCSEs, she is teaching us a lesson in how to pull off wartime vintage. When we caught her sporting this utilitarian get up we wouldn’t have guessed that she usually looks more girly. “Pink is my favourite colour and I love 50s dresses with big petticoats,” she tells us. The thing about going vintage is that sometimes you can be in danger of looking like an extra in a period drama. Edith manages to strike the right balance between authenticity and wearability like a pro well beyond her young years. If that sounds patronising it’s only cos we’re jealous we didn’t dress this well at her age. Red head scarf from Sunday market “I’m not sure which one, but it’s in the North Laine every week. I get a lot of my clothes from markets or charity shops.” Shirt from To Be Worn Again “I got it ages and ages ago, so it’s really old now, but I love it.” Waistcoat from To Be Worn Again, again “It was too big at first so I had to take it in. I like sewing so I can alter my clothes if I need to. The waistcoat is nice because you can wear it with more modern stuff, and dresses too.” Bag from End Of The Road festival “It’s from a vintage market at the festival. I have too many bags now and I’ve got to vary them otherwise they don’t get used and are a waste of money.” Utility trousers from Beyond Retro “These were men’s size 28 and fit me really well so they must have been for a really small man in the 1940s! I don’t wear them that much, I like dresses more” Boots “I nicked these off of my brother. He never wears them so I thought, ‘Fine! I’ll have them.’ I don’t wear them very much though, ‘cause they need to be worn in.”

UNSUNG HERO

100 PEOPLE WHO MAKE BRIGHTON WHAT IT IS N0.30 DONNA CLOSE WORDS AND PHOTO BY JAMES KENDALL The Arts and Cultural Projects Manager at Brighton & Hove City Council, Donna Close provides advice and support to artists and manages projects like White Night and Made In Brighton, as well as the city’s public art portfolio. How are the cuts affecting the arts in Brighton? Everything’s in danger, it’s the same across the whole public sector. Brighton’s always punched above its weight and can trade on interesting ideas rather than just cash, but the council should reflect what’s important for a city. Arts and culture remains up there, which is nice to see. You’re not doing White Night this year? No, but the ambition is definitely for it to come back. Everyone that was involved – the venues, partners and artists – was making it up as we went along. Everything new, all the time – it’s exhausting and it’s also difficult to stop and reflect on it. Brighton’s a changing place; it might need a different approach for 2013 but as much as anything it’s about the people who participate, knowing they want it to carry on. Can it run without Arts Council support? I don’t think it can. They turned us down for the last one, but it’s about new work and they absolutely should be involved with that, so we obviously need to work out what they will support. White Night’s had some amazing successes, artists who’ve gone on to tour nationally. It’s about artists doing something new and risky, and hoping it would be something they could continue doing. What is Made In Brighton all about? It’s the council trying to create a conversation with the local music industry, identifying the challenges and opportunities for working together. It could be about business support but also it’s identifying and reinforcing what music does to the city, both in hard financial terms but also its importance to the people who live here.

Secret Eater

food comes quickly and is stunningly presented. And the dishes taste every bit as good as they look. There’s no reason when making a meal for yourself to put cheese, curry and fried potato together (other than them being the best things in the world), but put your faith in the chefs and you’ll be rewarded with Rosti Raj (£14.65), a kind of hash brown with griddled tandoori halloumi, fresh coconut and 10 other perfectly chosen ingredients. The Aubergine Dengaku (£14.50) is another gamble but another win – a Japanese miso-and-sake-glazed aubergine dish which is wonderfully indulgent. We’re pleasantly surprised that what looked like guacamole turned out to be velvety pesto, which was delicious with the endemame beans. The desserts rock in at £8.10 each, but are very good indeed – the clementine sorbet and ‘spoon cream’ making the chocolate and hazelnut Nutty Tart into three puddings in one. The Nosey Parkin, a sticky pudding with stem ginger and baked rhubarb, has just as much going on.

THE PLACE We were chatting about Terre à Terre in the SOURCE office the other day and discovered that none of us had been for over a decade. Sure, it’s the most famous restaurant in Brighton, but have we started taking it for granted? Maybe it was time to head back and remind ourselves why the vegetarian restaurant has fans not just across Brighton but across the whole country. THE MEAL One thing that hasn’t changed is the verbosity of the menu. Many of the dishes have 30-word descriptions of what’s in them, not everything obvious to the layman (“tamarind relish with channa rasam” anyone?). Despite the complexity, the

THE VERDICT Yeah, it’s expensive, but Terre à Terre is one of the few world class restaurants in Brighton. Most times we all know our meals by heart but the new flavours here jump out and surprise you. The carnivore end of the Secret Eater team didn’t even moan about missing meat, so that’s saying something. WERE WE SUSSED No. Why wouldn’t you take photos of food this beautiful?

IN CONVERSATION WITH

COCAINE ANONYMOUS Words By James Kendall Illustration by Rory Taylor At rorytaylor.com

Apart from the fact that the process of getting it to your nostril is littered with death – 16,466 died in the Mexican drug war alone last year – coke is pretty fucking boring. It’s never as good as you think it’s going to be and the people you chat to for hours to get that extra line can be tiresome. Really, why are you still doing it? Maybe you can’t stop, in which case Cocaine Anonymous are the people to talk to. With daily meetings throughout Sussex, the work they do is amazing. Robert filled us in on how it helped him. How did you start on the coke? What started this for me was the millennium celebrations. I wanted to get a bit of cocaine after I saw on the TV that the price had plummeted. I thought, ‘That’s a good idea.’ I bought some for the party and thought I’ll do some and then stop. It’s now 2012 and I’m three years in recovery. That’s how long it’s taken me to stop having that party. How did you get into trouble? As it went on, my boundaries of morality were altered. I found myself hanging out with the sort of people who would approve of my addiction so my quality of life was slipping all the time. The worse things got, the more I did. I kicked a lamppost while coked up and broke my foot which meant I couldn’t work for 12 weeks. That meant I could go hell for leather for three months. I lost my job eventually, and my family. Unfortunately I inherited a bit of money from my grandfather which meant I could keep going. How bad did it get? I started smoking crack. You’d have trouble putting £500 up your nose, but when you’re smoking it £500 is nothing. I was smoking that amount of crack a day by the end. The dealers would lend it to me when I didn’t have any money and when the money ran out it got pretty scary. I’m 6’2” and I weighed about seven stone. I’d smoked a house-worth of crack cocaine. It took everything from me. Then someone suggested Cocaine Anonymous. What did you think when you first turned up at CA? I was really surprised to find people in the same situation as me that had found sobriety and had gone for periods of time without cocaine. It was a relief. I started

Page 48

to do what they suggested and started to get clean myself. Now I’m three years without drink or drugs. The people I’ve met there are the most trustworthy people I’ve ever met. They’re really true friends, we really help each other, really account for each other. Do you have to stop taking coke to go to CA? No, not at all. I went to Cocaine Anonymous for months before I was able to stop. Ultimately we’re trying to achieve sobriety but that’s not everyone’s experience when they walk in the door with a raging coke habit. It takes time. People tend to come along, have a look at what we’re doing, try and stop by themselves and come back when they really can’t. Anyone that’s got any problem with any drug can come, even marijuana What was the turning point? When I was about half way through the suggested programme I sat down with my father and we talked and cried and I realised I couldn’t put him through this any more. I went to see the Bob Marley film last night and before I wouldn’t have been able to sit through it without nipping to the toilets for a line halfway through. Life is so much better. There’s a perception with coke that you should be able to dip in and out of it. It is one of the most addictive substances on the planet, but I don’t think when you’re taking it you really know what addiction is. You think, I’ll will it away. I’ve had friends who could take it and then leave it but I’m one of the minority that cannot take drugs safely. It was very subtle and took a long time to bring me to my knees.

What do people need to look out for as a warning sign? If you’re breaking your own rules. If your rule is, I’ll only do it every other Saturday, and you find yourself doing it every Saturday then you’re already in a problem. If that is happening, come along to Cocaine Anonymous and listen to some of our stories. I always said to myself I couldn’t have fun without getting coked up but since being in recovery I’ve had the WEB: sussexcocaineanonymous.co.uk happiest three years of my life. My HELPLINE: 0800 612 0225 daughter has got her father back, my father’s got his son back.

SPOKEN WORD SECTIONS

Words Nick Coquet, James Kendall, Rosie Kendall

For the dramatic lyricist, clever couplets and alliterative prose can sometimes fall short of their intended emotional levels. He’s turned up to 10 across the board: heartbreak, longing, indignation, retribution... Where can he go from there? Where? Fortunately, number 11 on the wordsmith’s dial is the spoken segment. Brought out like ballad big guns, they offer the singer the chance to step back from the song and offer a heartfelt director’s commentary on proceedings. We’ll talk you through half a dozen.

Sonic Youth

‘Tunic (Song For Karen)’

The best spoken word sections come in the middle of songs that are stories, and this one is a great tale. Kim Gordon takes the role of Karen Carpenter delivering a message to her loved ones from beyond the grave. A happy ending to a life cruelly taken by anorexia before anyone understood it, Karen’s got a band with her mates Janis, Dennis and Elvis and, most importantly, she’s playing the drums again. Sonic Youth were into their talky bits on ‘Goo’. “Are you gonna liberate us girls from male, white corporate oppression?” Kim asks a non-committal Chuck D on ‘Kool Thing’. (JK)

Charlene

‘I’ve Never Been To Me’

Born again Charlene’s nostalgic ramblings of days of yachts and champagne hide a sinister purpose, as she indoctrinates us with patriarchy-supporting scaremongering about the dangers of the “subtle whoring that costs too much to be free.” She thinks we’re all wanton slags for partying it up, and ominously advises us to settle for a kiddie and a quarrelsome husband before it’s too late. God forbid we should have lascivious royalty ripping our knickers off in exotic locations like poor damaged Charlene and her barren womb. Stay home ladies, and do the laundry. Fun isn’t for us. That’s truth, that’s love… (RK)

The Horrors

‘Who Can Say’

As shown by his Cat’s Eyes offshoot, Farris is clearly a fan of 60s girl groups, so it follows that a spoken word section should make an appearance in The Horrors. Over grumbling bass and swirling garage-psych organ he deadpans that dumping his bird hadn’t gone so well. “And when I told her

Page 62

isaac hayes

I didn’t love her anymore, she cried”, he says dispassionately. The devastating passage is actually taken from Jay & The Americans’ Spector goes country-esque ‘She Cried’, later covered by The Shangri-Las, who themselves know their way around talking in a song (see ‘Leader Of The Pack’). (JK)

Dexys Midnight Runners ‘This Is What She’s Like’

Cursory research proves most Dexys records to be riddled with conversational catharsis, and this single from ‘Don’t Stand Me Down’ (timing in at 12:24) is in no hurry to get to the meat of the song. It opens with paranoid Kev badgering bandmate Billy Adams over whether people have been talking about him behind his back, before delivering one of the most heartfelt love songs in the Dexys canon. The titular ‘she’ was the bird playing the fiddle on ‘Come On Eileen’, whom our hero was putting over at the time. (NC)

Isaac Hayes

‘By The Time I Get To Phoenix’

At a mere 19 minutes long, you can give Isaac a little time to talk through what he thinks Jimmy Webb was trying to say when he wrote this classic. So what do you think Isaac? Oh, you think it’s about how hard it is for a man to be in love with a woman ‘cos they’re all liars and whores? Now there’s a surprise for a man who wrote the line “One woman is making my home/While the other one is making me do wrong.” But the pay-off of waiting half the tune to get to the actual song is that it slivers over the groove Isaac has been sitting on for nine minutes like lightly-warmed molasses. (JK)

Soft Cell

‘Torch’

For this 1982 single, Soft Cell garnished their 60s girl group homage with the breathy stylings of Cindy Ecstasy. Her day job was pre-prohibition pill provision for the dandy duo, but her spoken contribution to this song is its making. A sexually confused yet libidinous Almond likens her to Billie Holliday (drunk, high on smack etc...) and tells her he wants to grab her and kiss her. She confirms a likely violent rebuttal. We like her work on ‘Memorabilia’ too, but it’s more of a rap and thus cannot be included here for reasons of pedantry. (NC)
