GREEN SHOOTS

It looks like Brighton has woken up out of its hibernation. There’s about twice as much stuff going on this month than we had space for in the magazine (lucky for you it’s all previewed and heading to brightonsource.co.uk). So let’s use this last bit of space for a quick rundown.

First up, The Apples bring their ninepiece dirty funk/turntablism/Eastern melodies mix to the Blind Tiger on Sunday 11th.

There’s loads of new club nights, including Songs For The Deaf, a night of alternative 90s anthems at the Pav Tav on every first Saturday, as well as more live hip hop at the Easy Bar (Phi Life Cypher on Friday 9th). A new label, Friendly Dinner, is releasing our Writer’s Poll winner, ‘A Drowning’ by Black Black Hills and there’s a pop-up kitchen at The Farm.

Plus there are loads of sold out gigs worth getting ripped by touts for. Rizzle Kicks at the Concorde (Tues 13th/Weds 14th) will be immense and one to brag about when your mates see them at the Brighton Centre later this year. Elsewhere get begging for Van Morrison, The Cribs and Sinead O’Connor.

Oh yeah, and all the other stuff in the magazine, if that doesn’t appeal.

KEMP TOWN GOES RIO

This year’s Kemp Town Carnival is coming up on June 9th, and organisers are starting the festivities early with two fundraising events this month. The Blind Tiger hosts a Carnival Spectacular on Tuesday 6th, with live music from groovers The Muel, ex-12 Stone Toddlers Mynie Moe and Balkanesque ska band Ratbags. Then on Friday 23rd, Concorde 2 welcomes Resonators, Carnival Collective and Roots Garden for an exuberant Dubraizer party. Visit kemptowncarnival.com for details.

FRINGE IN YOUR EYES

This year’s Brighton Fringe will see over 675 events taking place in 191 venues across the city, from May 5th to the 27th. The range of entertainment includes veteran guests Des O’Connor and Tony Benn, a full line-up of comedy (including Mark Steel, Gina Yashere and Isy Suttie), dozens of theatrical productions and countless unclassifiable performances in surprising and unusual places.

Tickets go on general sale on March 1st, with the full printed brochure appearing mid-month.

VEGFEST GROWS Hove Centre Sat 17th & Sun 18th

Vegfest, the annual jamboree for those that choose not to eat anything with a face, continues to go from strength to strength. There will be over 100 stalls spread over three floors, films and talks plus a licensed bar.

With free entry, loads of tasty plant-based free samples and a full program of live bands, cooking demos and animal welfare discussions, this should satisfy everyone from the ‘vegetarians’ who eat fish and support the dairy trade to the most hard-line vegan.

FATBOY DJS ANNOUNCED

We’ve known about the event for a while but finally the line-up for Fatboy Slim’s Big Beach Boutique has been announced. Joining the man on Friday June 1st are Carl Cox, Luciano, The 2 Bears and Maya Jane Coles, with Saturday bringing along Nero, Annie Mac, DJ Fresh, Jaguar Skills, Doorly and Union. This year the festival will be held in the sparkly new AMEX stadium, and we predict everyone there will be shaking their wobbly bits.

ESCAPE THE LINE-UP

The Great Escape is a great place to catch acts that will be big in the next few years, before anyone besides their mums knows who they are. This year’s line-up ranges from the garage beats of Mujeres, to the tinkling ivories of Nils Frahms and post-hardcore of We Are The Ocean. If you’re deeply in the red then no worries, you can volunteer to help out and witness all the glory for nothing. TGE takes place May 10th to the 12th.

WARREN LOVESTICK TRIBUTE

It was with sadness that we returned in the New Year to the news that popular promoter Warren Lovestick had passed away. He promoted the events that gave him his adopted surname for seven years across Brighton, frequently for charity. His Pride parade antics were legendary.

Saturday 17th sees Psychosocial given over to a night of remembrance, full of the funky underground house that he loved.

Endless nights are dedicated to anthem nostalgia, of every genre. But iPop! blows them all out of the water as it spans five, yes, five decades of floor fillers to help remind you of all the god-awful things you wore. Following Komedia’s Krater Comedy Club, anyone who fancies a dance afterwards gets in free, though at £3 on the door it won’t break the bank. The night boasts great DJs like Iced Gems (of Unhooked Generation fame) and best of all they’re always amenable to requests.

With electro swing so ubiquitous on the local club scene, it’s only natural for Brighton audiences to clamour for some authentic jazz. And now they have it, in the shape of The Verdict, our first ever purpose-built jazz venue, on Edward Street. Friday 2nd sees their first club night with the Simon Robinson trio, and a heavy-hitting programme booked up til May, plus there’s a café and bar open from 8am til late. Nice.

It’s all change down on the seafront for Saturday nights. Indie night stalwart Hold Up! – after eight years at Life – has shuffled over to The Tube and Juicebox has jumped in its place.

Apparently it’s all working out perfectly: Hold Up love the intimate setting chock full of music lovers, while Juicebox has been a riot of partygoers going mental to the high-octane mix of indie and dance, thrown down by Eddie The Goatboy Matatatat and George Nunners. Everyone’s a winner.

For a club as shiny new as PsychoSocial you’d expect a load of new nights, and here’s another fresh feather in their cap.

Incognito is promising three rooms of psychedelic and progressive trance topped with techno, electro, house, fidget, gypsy, dub and glitch. As if that’s not enough the crew, in association with Liquid Records (whose Beatnik and Slackbaba headline the launch on Sat 3rd), are making it a multimedia affair with bucketloads of décor.

A new online outlet for the city’s skater community, Brighton Skateboards specialises in manufacturing and importing boutique and retro skate brands. Ranging from US longboards to iconic 70s reissues (check out their great nostalgic, multicoloured plastic board in the photo above), you can browse the initial ranges at brightonskateboards.com. The team are also planning a bunch of outdoor skate events for Brighton during the summer.

Bringing the noise to The Pav Tav for the past six years, guitarabusing club night Guerilla Rocks has moved down to the prom for a new residency at Audio. Smashing together alternative sounds from rock to indie, metal to punk, Guerilla Rocks takes place every Tuesday from 11pm. Pretty much guaranteed messy and unpretentious fun.

Having been carefully and lovingly restored, with many of its original features, this three-storey café and late lounge ought to be swish. With a ‘library room’ and a faux grass carpeted roof terrace included in the design, it’s the sort of venue you could visit every day. During the day a full breakfast and lunch menu will be available, and cream teas are on offer in the afternoons. During the evenings take full advantage of the well-stocked bar, or catch one of the weekly jazz nights.

Ever wondered how Brighton went from a shabby, seaside town to the popular, vibrant city it is today? If your interest in local history goes beyond wanting to be able to answer the questions at a pub quiz, go to a meeting of The Wellsbourne Society. Meeting quarterly, this group celebrates all aspects of our history. The opening night will include a showing of a rare BBC documentary about Brighton, and will be followed by slides, spoken histories and musical accompaniments. The first one is at The Latest Music Bar on Wednesday 21st.

Komedia Thurs 1st

Portico Quartet’s debut album, ‘Knee-deep In The North Sea’ was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2008, and their original, subtle take on jazz has been enthralling audiences ever since. Having started out as buskers, they retain a charming improvised feel in their live sets. Distinctive not just because of their use of the Hang instrument, but because of a rhythmic melancholy which stays with the listener long after the song ends. Enchanting. (JMM)

SPOTLIGHT KID Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Fri 2nd

Nostalgic shoegazers Spotlight Kid are bringing the psychedelic 90s back one hip-sway at a time. September’s album ‘Departure’ shows maturity in their style, and each track was recorded in one take, adding to the lo-fi appeal. Listen out for ‘Can’t Let Go (This Feeling)’, a slow-building future classic.

Support comes from Tyrannosaurus Dead, who are rapidly getting a reputation as one of Brighton’s best live acts, and atmospheric lounge band The Witches. (JMM)

ALLO DARLIN’

Haunt Sat 3rd

Anglo-Australian quartet Allo Darlin’s eponymous album made a fair splash in the indiepop pool a couple of years back.

They’re well connected within the scene: ukulele-wielding lynchpin Elizabeth Morris has guested with Darren Hayman, Tender Trap and A Little Orchestra amongst others (the Orchestra’s Monster Bobby turning up on Allo Darlin’s ‘Dreaming’ too), while fellow Aussie bassist Bill Botting was half of ace, recently departed, synthcore duo Moustache Of Insanity. Now Kent-based, this is their Brighton debut. (SH)

Probably the most aggressive noise-pop band to ever be featured on Gossip Girl, American twosome Sleigh Bells have conquered that tricky area between pure commercial appeal and hardcore post-punk ideals. Second album ‘Reign Of Terror’ was released in February, so expect to hear stand-out

For more than twenty years, without a change in line-up, this trio have been ploughing their musical furrow: beloved of hacks and musicians, but never quite crossing over into the mainstream. Even when Jack and Meg White hit paydirt with their punky garage blues concoction, the band who wrote the recipe remained at the margins. A crying shame, as the sheer noisy enthusiasm on offer tonight demonstrates. JSBX are the warm crackly vinyl that fathered your antiseptic White Stripes CDs. (AP)

SELEBRITIES & SLOW MAGIC

Hope Tues 6th

Synth-soaked Brooklyn trio Selebrities are so convincingly evocative of 1980s northern England that it’s hard to believe they aren’t the strange spawn of Marc Almond and Gary Numan. Disco, electro, pop – even in a scene saturated with 80s lust, Selebrities manage to stand out as original and effective. Lightly addictive and unforgettable, this isn’t a show you’ll regret. Slow Magic are equally compelling, with breathy overtones and a sense of fantasy you’ll remember from watching The NeverEnding Story, but with an even better soundtrack. (JMM)

That’s right, everyone’s least favourite Spice Girl’s all grownout of Adidas and doing shows by herself. She might be the only one who could sing, but despite reasonable post-Spice chart success, will she always be remembered for high kicks and ill-advised tattoos? Fifth solo studio album ‘The Sea’ (geddit?) was released in November to a strong critical reception, so maybe there’s life in the old Girl yet. (JMM)

This handsome Brighton lad’s been uploading atmospheric, acoustic and heavily auto-tuned covers of mostly female pop stars, and he’s probably the closest thing we have to a smooth-voiced, smoothchested Brighton Beiber. Hundreds of thousands of views can’t be wrong, right? Right. (JMM)

Sweet, fresh, crisp and eloquently delivered. Delightful, wise and ever so soulful. A voice which makes up for so much that others lack. She pulls on your heart strings and makes your pulse race a little faster. Her depth and range make you feel like you’re riding a high and glorious wave. Three Brighton locals are on the bill for this night, which promises to indulge your winter melancholy. So if you’re feeling more Morrissey than Miley, come and wallow. Folksy singersongwriter Kristin McClement will be soothing the crowds with her earthy vocals, heavenly kook Stuart Warwick’s sweet and beautiful tones will allow you to drift on your thoughts, and gentle acoustic band Twenty One Crows will vocalise your inner anguish and strife. Indie-pop Birmingham trio Johnny Foreigner have outlasted many of their contemporaries, and after five years are still delighting fans of their distinctive take on pop punk. Their

17-track fourth album, ‘Johnny Foreigner Vs Everything’ was released last November to a cacophony of praise from fans, and with a reputation for explosive live shows this should be impressive. Influential math-rock band We Are The Physics are also on the line-up, along with arty local grunge outfit Love Among The Mannequins. (JMM)

Blind Tiger Club Fri 9th

After supporting Bonobo last month, Anchorsong comes to the excellent Blind Tiger Club. His simple, peeled-back beats are effortless and unadulterated. Rhythmically beautiful, the laid back harmonies indulge your conscious and keep your senses floating as if on hot air. Subtly funky and delicious. It draws you in gradually, no need for race or chase. A seemingly natural high. Highly recommended. (RL)

THREE TRAPPED TIGERS Green Door Store Fri 9th

They shake the metaphorical stick at the contemporary beat manufacturing industry. The sensational Three Trapped Tigers create heavy, complex, industrial, gentle, eccentric, free, random and ordered sounds. They tear apart, reshape and redefine the standard, constructing musical forms and structures like intergalactic architects. They make most contemporary outfits taste like candy floss. Not to be minced with; a gig for the truly courageous beat-freak. (RL)

Palmeira Sat 10th

Put on by the good folks at Brighthelmstone Promotions, The Palmeira in Hove will be hosting the first ever Palmfest, a UK Americana all-dayer headlined by the godfather of UK Americana himself, Peter Bruntnell and his band. Also on the bill are the highly rated Small Town Jones, Bap Kennedy, and Robert Vincent, while Brighton is represented by the return of Caramel Jack as well as The Self Help Group and The Jamie Freeman Agreement. SHARON JONES & THE DAP KINGS

Concorde 2 Sat 10th

Probably the best and most authentic funk band performing today, this New York outfit make a welcome return to the seafront.

They’ve been putting out quality music for years but the songs really come into their own when played live. Sharon’s powerhouse vocals are augmented by Binky Griptite’s slick guitar and the punchiest horn section since the JB’s. If you like your soul music down and dirty, fat and frenetic, this bunch are your wet dream come true. (SC)

EARTH

Haunt Mon 12th

In the grunge-rich 90s, Seattle’s Earth were touted as the heaviest band alive, their crushing, speed-reduced riff instrumentals pouring from speakers like lava. Very much a cult concern back in the day, the intervening years have seen Earth’s unique low frequency explorations slowly seep into the fabric of rock. After a long absence, during which numerous drone disciples, notably Sunn O))) kept their flame alive, Earth returned with a broader palette coloured by parched country and minimal classicism. (SH)

Pavilion Theatre Tues 13th

Local boys Cave Painting, despite this being their debut headlining show in Brighton, are definitely heading in the direction of ‘made good’. This outing coincides with the release of their first single on major label Mercury Records, with whom they also have an album coming later in the year. You’ll find CP sitting between Chapel Club and Arcade Fire with just a pinch of Metronomy – all doomy atmospherics and fragile melodies, but with a handy beat up their sleeve when called for. (MB)

Breathy, soulful vocals and a live seven-piece band creating dubstep from its roots upwards have scored this Leeds outfit some well received beachside festival slots, and some highly dedicated fans. Deep bass soundscapes prevail under jazzy grooves, twinkly instrumentals and heavenly trip hop melodies,

reminiscent of a more passionate Cinematic Orchestra.

But if they invoke the crowd to drone ‘Cro-aayy-sherr, Croayy-sherr’, don’t encourage them. It’s annoying. We’re in Brighton, and it’s probably raining. (JMM)

Self-described as having the “brain, brawn and balls” to bring in a “brave new frontier” of indie rock, All The Young’s egos certainly match their sound. Their press shots only attest to this, all sharp suits and sunglasses like an Oasis that grew up on a strict diet of Coldplay and Reservoir Dogs. They’ve even got their own potential family feud in the Dooley brothers. Clichés aside though, this really is the new forefront of Brit rock. Sigh. (TJ)

Man Ray Sky headline this month’s SOURCE New Music showcase, with support from seven-piece folk/hip hop band Dizraeli & The Small Gods. Part of Brighton’s multidisciplinary Beatabet collective, Man Ray Sky’s membership overlaps with previous SOURCE headliners AK/DK. Man Ray Sky share similar interests in transcendent motorik, but their multiple guitars plug them into a more psychedelic and expansive groove. The band head to Norway this summer to record their debut album under the midnight sun. (SH)

SOUNDS YOU’VE NEVER HEARD FROM A CELLO

If you want to succeed at something, make it your own – that’s what they say. Well, we’ve never seen anyone play the cello like Abi Wade. One of the classiest instruments you can pilfer from your school’s orchestra cupboard, Abi has forsaken the sophistication to, well, hit it with sticks. Yeah, fine, we hear you say, very art college, but this is all happening in swirls of rhythmic harmony while she plucks at the strings and sings beautiful, off kilter folk songs. As if that wasn’t enough she’s got a bass kick happening with one foot and a tambourine attached to the other. We’ve got no idea how she does it. And, it turns out, neither has she.

“I can’t really do it separately,” Abi admits with a smile. “If you asked me ‘What are you playing on the bass drum?’ I wouldn’t know. I have to do it all together. It’s about getting into a rhythm I guess.”

She describes it as visual – she sees it as a circuit of hits.

“I know that it starts with the bass drum, then the tambourine, and then up to a stick. So I kind of see it like a circle and it just flows. I don’t know why, I can just do it,” she laughs.

If you’re considering getting an instrument to bash about, the cello would be pretty far down most people’s list. We guess they must be tougher than they look.

“Actually they’re quite delicate,” says Abi. “They don’t like heat, they don’t like cold. My cello has been remarkably good so far, so fingers crossed. I almost take it as a sign that it’s okay to be rough with it cos it hasn’t broken yet.”

She’s put the poor thing through a lot of strain though: mud, sand, and it doesn’t like it when she hits the strings directly on the song ‘Faker’.

“The bridge is starting to bend,” she confesses.

Abi started with the cello at the age of nine, so it’s perhaps not surprising that she’s started to turn away from the traditional ways of playing the instrument. Her choice came down simply to the fact that she just liked the look of it.

“It was the most impressive one I was given a choice of at primary school,” she recalls. “I don’t think my mum was too pleased though. It was a bit big for the car.”

Although her mother didn’t think much to the cello, it’s an instrument most people seem to like. We’ve got a soft spot for it from our days watching Lori Singer in the Fame TV show.

“I guess it’s ‘cause it’s so wholesome,” Abi suggest, “and the tone and tonality of it is just so rich. It’s actually the most closely linked to the human voice. it’s got the same range and the same timbre.”

Although she’s loaded down with pedals, boxes and sticks when she takes to the stage, one thing that’s absent from Abi’s set up is the omnipresent loop petal that solo artists seem to be addicted to these days. We have to say that we’re really pleased by it’s absence. Okay, we’ll get off the fence – we really don’t like them.

“A lot of people have said that to me,” says Abi. But keeping to what her – admittedly impressive – four limbs and voice can do at once could lead to possible limitations down the line. At the moment the simplicity is what makes it so special – adding stuff to it could take away from the uniqueness. It’s a similar position to the one that The Agitator found himself in when he tried adding dance beats and samples to his blues stomping. Will Abi be sticking rigidly to the formula?

“The sound will progress I think,” she considers. “I’m quite lucky because I play the piano as well, so I think I’ll probably bring some of that in just to get a bit of diversity. I love harmonies, so I’ll possibly get someone else to do some vocal harmonies as well. But I’d like to try and keep it so that it can all be done on stage, so that it’s not completely different live.”

Her first EP – ‘And Blood And Fire’, released on Andy Rossiter and Daniel Copeman from Esben & The Witch’s Love Thy Neighbour label – stuck very much to what we’d seen of Abi live. Showing that the songs are strong enough to stand up without needing to see the spectacle of how they’re performed, the thing that leaps out is how much space Abi is able to provide around the lyrics.

Bringing to mind Regina Spektor and Joanna Newsome, her voice is at the same time fragile and strong, sensual and pure.

All four songs are different enough to hide the fact that it’s all based around the cello.

“I haven’t done much recording so I didn’t want to go way out before I tried the basics,” she explains. “I wanted to just have it quite grounded. I felt that was more me. But I may try something new next time. We’ll see.”

One thing that strikes us is how difficult it must be to write songs not just on your own but also that have so much going on at the same time. Abi says that she usually starts with a cello riff or a beat.

“Sometimes I’ll find something which makes an interesting sound on the cello and build a piece around that,” she says.

“Generally it’s a riff, and then I put things in that I feel will add to the sound. Like I brought a brush in recently because I wanted a ‘chshh’ sound. It wasn’t that I wanted to write a song around a brush, I just thought that it’d sound good.”

As synonymous with the Green Door Store as cobbled dancefloors and failing to buy drinks with a credit card, the venue’s curious collection of deer heads and antlers receives its honours this evening. Rumbling instrumentalists June Deer (ex Waxed Apple/The Mutts) have the name, but they’re trumped conceptually by Fallow’s quite possibly unsettling soundscapes of cervine field recordings. Rounding out the bill, neither Andy Wheddon nor Embla Quickbeam has yet promised further stag do antics, but there’s still time. (SH)

THEO PARRISH & JULIO BASHMORE Life Fri 2nd

We don’t like to use the term ‘legendary’ but Detroit house god Theo Parrish is getting there. Heavily influenced by jazz greats such as Miles Davis and Nina Simone, his genre-rejecting re-edits have earned him a level of accessibility few techno producers could hope for. Support comes from Julio Bashmore, Bristol’s man of 2011, who’ll be spinning house dancefloor fillers like ‘Battle For Middle You’. More than just a big line-up, this is huge. Weighty. Obese. (JMM)

But not only do they promise a plethora of visuals as well as a bunch of new tunes from their forthcoming album there’s also the chance to get on stage with the duo, “bringing the fans closer to the music.” Yeah. The Ram Records boss has won more DJ Of The Year awards than we can shake a trophy at. His NYE sets did permanent damage to our hearing and we regret absolutely nothing. As far as production style goes, Andy C’s tunes are that no holds barred, rave your tits off type of drum’n’bass that eschews new liquid trends for traditional jungle sensibilities. They are big room rollers with gurning basslines and rapid fire drum loops, so we’ll be at the front dancing like it’s ‘99. (ZC)

Behold as the Concorde fills with b-boys. Heads nod, Red Stripes are held aloft, and the smoking area is suspiciously fragrant – it can only be a Rarekind night. This one features Mr Thing, 2000’s DMC Scratch Champion, and Yungun, who’s been defying expectations since he started breaking out of Eton aged 14 to rap at open mic nights. Five hours of the finest hip hop for free means only one thing – get down early. (JMM)

The last one was so good that someone soiled themselves on the dancefloor, no lie. We’ve reviewed it in the past and had a whopping great time while still managing to go home with clean underwear. So after a month to wash off the skid marks they’ve returned with Bass Clef, whose mix for Fact Magazine exhibited a love for African dance music. In support are the stalwart Ye Ye Fever DJs playing the best highlife, soukous and afrobeat bangers. (ZC)

Like a jazz John Peel, Gilles Peterson’s inclusive and original shows on Radio 1 have made him one of the station’s bestloved DJs. Credited with bringing acid jazz to the mainstream and having released over 100 jazz compilations, there’s no questioning his knowledge of the genre. Get those dancing shoes on. Support comes from Hint, whose latest album ‘High Intake’ is out on the 19th, Belleruche’s producer DJ Modest, and a Beta Hector DJ set. (JMM)

Is it too obvious to say that HotWuk are on fire? Oh, too late, we just did it. After sell-out shows at Life last year they’ve now brought bashment partiers The Heatwave to an even bigger venue. These guys deliver the unadulterated carnival vibes to every rave they play at, whether it’s Brighton, Bristol or their weekly show on Rinse FM. This white hot night’s gonna have you skanking by the beach like it’s summer. (ZC)

We were briefly worried that Jakwob had got lost in wobble bass forever but new tune ‘Electrify’ has dispelled such trepidation via a return to the harmonious coupling of female vocals over dubstep snares and transcendent chords that made his name in the first place. His singles have always alluded to the producer’s talent as a multi-instrumentalist and fortunately his DJ sets confirm this, spanning his wide influences from jazz and folk to hip hop and jungle. He doesn’t always get the headlines the more recognizable names of Hospital’s crew like Netsky and High Contrast do, but Cyantific’s responsible for one of the first liquid tunes we can remember. ‘Neon Skyline’ had that playful tone that features throughout his work, with irrepressible funk in both the beats and bass as well as vocal snippets that retain the soulful edge of the lady singer. And ‘Bounce It’ of last year proved he hasn’t lost that signature scientific sound. (ZC)

The handsomely floppy haired fellow looks like he could star in a British romcom but fortunately Subfocus concentrated on making dance music. His latest effort ‘Falling Down’ feels too much like generic chart friendly dubstep where wobbling turkey neck basslines and breathy female vocals are the trend, but it’s still a pleasant little ditty and there’s no doubt his set this evening will include the shameless d’n’b of ‘Timewarp’ and ‘Rock It’ so we’ll be down there, rocking it. Sheffield hellraisers Matter Of Fact, Dr Bad Touch and Powlo are down from the grim Midlands to teach us Southern softies how to drink rum, party hard and fuse funk, soul, jazz and northern soul into a night that makes the dancefloor heave. Which sounds like fighting talk to us, so come down and keep up Brighton’s fine heavy-drinking, crazy-dancing reputation. Following a raucous launch do at The Green Door Store in January, Worms moves across town to Sticky Mike’s for its second instalment. Brighton stalwarts Citizen K of the legendary Bust The Box and Mark Lerman of minimal pioneers Kliks (and guests) play dance music to dance to: electronic bass music of all kinds and from all eras. He’s one of the hardest working producers on our scene, with releases on Ninja Tune and Disfigured Dubz, as well as Love Sick Recordings which he co-owns with MarchMellow and Southbound Hangers.

This month, in association with SOURCE, Harry Watts will be discussing his still life photographs – frequently of found “accidental sculptures” – as well as his experiences assisting Martin Parr and Simon Roberts. A love of signwriting and some masterful glassblowing allows Andy Doig to illuminate the gallery with an avalanche of large crosses and star shapes. He’s inspired by fairground art from the 1960s and 1970s, which apparently helped allay any fears of dodgy mechanisms, and also presents Kiss Me Quick, a neon flashback to his daytrips to Bohemia-by-the-Sea as a yoof. Yes and Silence, two pieces handbuilt in acrylics, are tributes to European signage techniques of the 1970s. (BM)

SPOKEN WORD: TONY BENN & ROY BAILEY Komedia Tues 13th

A rescheduled appearance by these old campaigners should make for an interesting evening. Arguably Britain’s greatest living politician and enthralling diarist, Benn may be frail but his razor-sharp mind remains defiantly intact. Perfectly paired with socialist folk singer Bailey, this pair of great Britons has been performing together since the 1970s. We’re not sure if they will alternate or collaborate but this opportunity to bear witness to the intellectual common sense of both men should really not be missed. (SC)

THEATRE: THE TABLE Pavilion Theatre Thurs 15th

Existential crises aren’t just for days out in Worthing – they’re not even solely for humans, as this excellent show starring a troubled, cardboard-headed puppet proves. Blind Summit use all sorts of tricks to keep you guessing on a weave through form, black humour, crime and Beckett-style theatrical techniques. At the risk of constantly name-checking Edinburgh Fringe within this esteemed cultural bible, the praise they earned up there was every inch deserved. Toy actors have never made such invigorating theatre. (BM)

felt cruel and foolish after the film version of this rags-to-riches story cantered to industry glory back in 1998. New Venture are certs to capture the humour and affectations of Jim Cartwright’s spirit-gladdening story of anaemic-looking talent, but before that there’s a one-off evening exploring more of the writer’s work on Friday 16th, complete with readings and prizes. COMEDY: BOOTHBY GRAFFOE AND NICK PYNN Komedia Sun 25th

Hull people have always been good to Brighton – John Prescott gave us a football stadium, the Housemartins gave us Norman Cook (both tenuous, admittedly) and now Boothby Graffoe is back to make you snigger and sing. Like a magical soul-cleansing biscuit to exorcise every bad memory you have of twee bellends subjecting you to dreadful approximations of music and comedy, Graffoe is both brilliant on strings and a singular stand-up act to reckon with. He’s bringing his new album with him. (BM)

FILM: INTO THE ABYSS Duke Of York’s Tues 27th

A tale from death row with sections filmed just eight days before one of the interviewees was executed, German cinema god Werner Herzog’s study of Americans Michael Perry and Jason Burkett – sentenced to death and life imprisonment respectively for triple homicide – was perhaps the most intense documentary of 2011. More precisely, it concentrates on the people affecting and affected by their plot to steal a car and subsequent incarceration. A satellite questions and answers session with Herzog follows the film. Just as well this army of actors and musicians will do it for you, then, with stories, scenes, songs and poems picking over Bertie’s politically-charged, no-holds-barred array of outpourings, plus a bunch of Kurt Weill songs and projected footage. Ist lecker. (BM)

The kind of multi-instrumentalist who presumably spent his formative years locked in a music cupboard, Nick Baxter’s clearly a very talented musician. Some tracks, such as ‘You I & She,’ are reminiscent of Jack Johnson’s gentle guitars and hum-a-long vocals, albeit with more swearing, making the album feel accessible enough to be mainstream radio-friendly.

Others, like ‘Halfway Home,’ are the sort of genuine folk best heard around a campfire. This 11-track album has very tight production, and we hear he’s scouting for musicians to help make the magic live. (JMM)

SINGLE: CURXES Haunted Gold (curxes.com)

Curxes follow up last year’s singles double header (‘The Constructor’ and ‘Creatures’) with this gothic piece of electronic pop melodrama. The synthetic percussive stabs owe much to the clanging metallic samples of Depeche Mode’s ‘Construction Time Again’, while Roberta Fidora’s vocals veer towards Siouxsie Sioux’s stricter moments. There’s pounding contemporary beats underlying the industrial 80s influence, but following Trevor Jackson’s recent ‘Metal Dance’ compilation for Strut, Curxes would be well positioned for an EBM revival. SINGLE: FRICTION Led Astray (Shogun Audio)

Congratulations to Shogun Audio boss Friction for getting his Radio 1 residency, and with this new job what better time to release a banger. ‘Led Astray’ has a razorblade whirr that gulps and then folds in on itself. Contrast that with some lovely orchestral chords and an inoffensive vocal hook and voila – you’ve got yourself a chart-friendly dance tune. Fans of Friction’s blistering sets may be expecting more bollocks but radio listeners are lapping this up. (ZC)

EP: MIRRORS

This Year, Next Year, Sometime...? (mirrorsofficial.bandcamp)

Now slimmed to a trio, Mirrors have broken cover with seven new songs of soft-edged synthpop. With its uplifting chorus, opening track ‘Dust’ packs the most immediate punch. The

remaining songs are more subdued, but indicate that Mirrors’ listening tastes have broadened beyond their initial Kraftwerk homage to include the less fashionable likes of Blancmange (‘Blood Diamond’) and Erasure (‘Leave Me Here’). The vague EP title may refer to the release date of Mirrors’ second album, which this download funds. (SH)

ALBUM: PEPE DELUXÉ Queen Of The Wave (Catskills)

Finnish freakbeat manglers Pepe Deluxé’s fourth full-length has been five years in the making, and, against pretty much all sane expectations, they’ve delivered a tour de force psychedelic concept album. The basis for this ‘esoteric pop opera’ is a preposterous-sounding, but genuine, 19th century Atlantean dream-text, Frederick S. Oliver’s ‘A Dweller On Two Planets’. Pepe Deluxé take Oliver’s imaginative mythology and, with a huge cast of vocalists and musicians, run wild across the terrains of international exotica. Mind-blowingly addictive. (SH)

ALBUM: SOCCER96 Soccer96 (Demons Are Real)

Just when you think you know all there is to know about Brighton’s electronic music scene, along come two men calling themselves Danalogue and Beatamax to change everything. Clearly inspired by 8-bit computer games, Soccer96 have a rock-y passion and pure caffeinated energy, which is rarely found in their contemporaries – a driven tension that isn’t afraid of being obvious at the expense of being great.

Carefully layered soundscapes belay a freneticism that’s nothing short of inspiring, especially on ‘SuperWarrior.’ The album launch is at the Green Door on the 24th. (JMM)

The Hare, The Hound & The Tortoise (Something Nothing)

The long-awaited debut from Brighton’s favourite besuited altcountry sextet assembles their three animal-branded EPs. Cleverly scathing lyrics of doomed love sit atop music that veers from the rollicking guitar races of the opening Hare quartet, through the melancholy waltz of a clearly wounded Hound, to the whiskey-sodden country confessionals of Tortoise. While the track order causes a lull in energy levels in the middle section, quality shines throughout on what is surely a springboard to wider national recognition. (AP)

Starting as a specialist documentary strand within Brighton’s CineCity, See Festival has grown rapidly into a major independent event in its own right. Now in its seventh year, it has expanded to cover nine continuous days of features, shorts and seminars, with guest speakers from the worlds of film, music and politics. With contributions from farmers, doctors, chefs and scientists, the film aims to show how the interlinked problems of population growth, agriculture and environment may be solved in a sustainable and palatesatisfying way.

BLOOD IN THE MOBILE Friends Meeting House Thurs 29th

Blood In The Mobile sets out the argument that mobile phone companies around the world are fuelling civil war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by sourcing mineral components from the country’s ravaged eastern region. Since 1998, it is estimated that the ongoing fighting has claimed more fatalities than World War II, despite the formal ending of hostilities in 2003. The film follows the links from the world’s deadliest conflict to the palms of its viewers’ hands.

BIRD ON A WIRE Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Fri 30th

A timely screening of this long-buried documentary, following January’s release of Leonard Cohen’s first album in eight years, ‘Old Ideas’. Tony Palmer’s promotional portrait failed to meet the songwriter’s initial approval (Cohen demanded a re-edit from a third party), and on release allegedly opened and closed on the same day. 294 cans of Palmer’s footage turned up in a Hollywood warehouse in 2009, enabling the director to re-assemble his original vision of this lost study of Cohen’s 1972 tour.

Even The Only Way Is Essex’s most attentive fans struggle to disentangle the spontaneous from the scripted in the ITV2 series, so the creative team’s insights into cast selection and staging should be fascinating.

“For every band that makes it, there is a band that should have” runs the tagline of this Stewart Lee narrated history of Oxford’s music scene. Followed by a Q&A with director Jon Spira, and an acoustic set from dreamboat former Ride frontman Mark Gardener.

A BAFTA presentation of 2010’s hugely popular documentary on the life and death of Formula One hero Ayrton Senna. Made with the full co-operation of Senna’s family, who provided hours of home video, the film makes extensive use of thrilling motor racing footage, including in-cockpit shots and knucklewhitening collisions. THE REASONS

It’s the early 8os and I’m under a beach towel with loads of sand sticking to my sun cream like a full-body sand vajazzle. I use my finger to remove some from under the elastic of my Superman Speedos and peek my head out for long enough to complain to my mum, “This country is too hot for me and we should never come here again.” It’s Carmarthen Bay in Wales and the temperature is a sweltering 23 degrees.

Coming from Scotland the only proviso for survival is a waterproof skin; there is nothing advantageous about having UV protection. It only became apparent when we travelled to

the tropics of south Wales that I needed help in the form of suntan lotion. Not only was my body coated in a thick layer of lotion but also my eyes were bright red as they too had been coated with sun cream on a river of salty sweat.

The nearest I ever come to being tanned is in the height of summer – if you stand far enough away from me my freckles give the illusion of colour. Other than that I’m pretty much a reddish pink all year round. If I do get sunburnt my freckles look green and I will most likely get ill and have amazingly scary nightmares due to a combination of dehydration and sunstroke. Ouch.

THE EXPERIENCE

There is a much safer and less painful process to getting a tan these days. Spray tan has arrived – I’d seen it and heard about it but had never thought about having one until now. Secretly I’ve always been jealous of tanned people. They walk around looking all even and white-teethed. It’s just another day for them and I’ve always wanted to join the gang.

I dare say I was nervous before my session as I had all sorts of pre-conceived ideas about what I might look like on the other side. Dale Winton sprang to mind a few times and it didn’t help that I’d just watched Anchorman the night before; I couldn’t help but think of comedy tans.

Charlie was the beauty therapist who had the job of spraying my pasty body and making me into a bronzed Adonis.

Apparently I could either strip to my pants or put on the thong provided – Charlie did give me a heads up and tell me that the thong was “a bit revealing” so I opted to keep my dignity intact and my underwear on.

Putting on my hair cap, I regressed straight back to the fearful child that I was back in Wales. The only difference was my pants didn’t have Superman on them. I stepped into the pod and asked nervously, “Does it come in different shades?” I felt a bit like I was ordering a sofa. Charlie explained that there was a ‘medium’ option, which would look natural, or ‘dark’, which presumably wouldn’t. I opted for medium, as I didn’t want to go for the hard stuff on my first go.

Charlie picked up the tanning airbrush and started spaying me down. I was verbally manipulated into several different bodybuilder poses until my body was evenly covered. Once I was done acting like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Charlie left me to blow-dry myself with the tube from the airbrush.

At first glance I looked slightly browner, but I already looked more evenly toned than my former self. Charlie told me that as the day went on I would get progressively darker and by the evening I’d be as brown as I was going to get.

I know it’s just a psychological effect but I walked out feeling healthy and I must admit I felt good about how I looked. I knew I had a browning journey to travel as the day went on but just from one look in the mirror I had an overwhelming feeling of

change – it’s like how a new and different haircut makes you feel.

When I got back to the office, every time I turned round to ask a question I got a louder “oh my god, you’re getting browner...”

At one point I got “Bob Monkhouse!” When I got home I took my clothes off and had a good look at myself in the mirror. I looked mental. I slept with the tan on as advised and dreamt of Baywatch and Miami Vice.

WAS IT WORTH IT?

My girlfriend certainly appreciated it and people have been saying, “The studio must be going well – have you been somewhere warm?” So while it must look natural I still have no qualms about saying it’s a spray tan. My comedy tan has turned out to be not so comedic after all but actually a nice and worthwhile experience. I know it’s winter but the effect on my self-image, and to a certain extent vanity, has left me feeling like it’s a warm summer day.

But while I like the novelty of looking brown it’s just not natural for me – I’m Scottish and no amount of factor-anything would really send me that colour. My colouring is distinctive – especially down here on the coast – and I wouldn’t permantly change it for anything.

100 PEOPLE WHO MAKE BRIGHTON WHAT IT IS NO.27 GEORGE GINN WORDS STUART HUGGETT, PHOTO BY JAMES KENDALL The Record Album on Terminus Road has been selling soundtrack albums, on vinyl, to its discerning customers since the 1940s. Now in his 80s George Ginn has has no plans to stop or, heaven forbid, start selling CDs. How long have you had the shop?

The shop was established in 1948 while I was in the Air Force. When I left in 1960 I had a two year gap before I took over the shop. It was the normal rock-based second hand shop but over the course of the next couple or three years I imposed my own interests, while still catering for every need. My main interest is theatre and film.

Who buys records from you?

Most of my customers are in their teens and twenties. I deal with most of the DJs and people who sample, and all the rock groups like The Kooks and The Coral tend to end up in here too. The Avalanches spent the whole day in the shop.

Radiohead were the last to come in – Thom whatever his name is. Damon Albarn’s been in. But Amon Tobin is one of my best customers and I even received due credit on his last compact disc.

Who’s made your favourite soundtracks?

My favourite film composers are the composers who composed in the symphonic style. That period is referred to as the Golden Age, with composers like Franz Waxman and Bernard Herrmann. There’s only one composer now, in my estimation, who equates with those and that’s John Williams. He does compose in a symphonic style. But my favourite is a chap called Erich Korngold, who did the music for the film Kings Row. Where do all these gems come from?

I don’t know what governs releasing soundtracks but they are increasingly re-pressing some vintage material. For example there are three classic Nino Rota albums that have just been released in Italy, limited to 500 each. I have to dig a little bit. There’s over a thousand soundtracks and original stage show recordings in stock and 99.99% of those are totally brand new, unplayed copies, although they may date back thirty years or so.

Until you find the specials board. Tempted by the ham, egg and chips (classic pub grub), we decide on the more exotic sausages, colcannon, roasted beetroot and red wine gravy (£6.50). As bangers and mash goes, it’s pretty damn good.

Tasty, meaty sausages that are nice and brown, on top of mash mixed with cabbage (that’s the colcannon), and peas floating in loads of gravy. We don’t clock that the beetroot is missing and there’s big apologies when the chef notices. No problem as it’s insanely hot right to the last mouthful. The bubble and squeak, pesto mushrooms and grilled mozzarella FOOD SERVED NOON-2PM MON-SAT (£5.50) is a similar success. The bubble is lovely and crunchy on top, where it peeks out from the pile of melted cheese, and the pesto mushrooms are a revelation.

They even win over the fungi-shunning guest we brought.

THE PLACE

Say what you like about posh restaurants, curry houses and burger joints, there are times when there’s nothing better than some proper pub grub. But let’s not forget, a pub is for drinking in. Bollocks to gastro-pubs that are no good for settling in for the afternoon, we just want a bit of something to keep us going. Fitzherberts show where their priorities lie by only opening the kitchen for a couple of hours a day. Oh yeah, they have Sundays off too. No roast for you, get another pint in.

THE VERDICT

We met someone who used to be part of the SOURCE team and it was obvious he was a local but he didn’t grass us up, at least until after we left. And forgetting the beetroot suggests we weren’t sussed. Nice service anyway.

Page one of the slender menu is a selection of interesting sandwiches, while page two is chilli and burgers. And that’s it.

For the money it’s really very good. We spent just over a tenner and even had a soft drink. At that price you can afford to get your stomach lined for a gentle afternoon session. We guess that’s the idea.

Mature b-boy DJ Format chats to us about his new album and live show, Manfred Mann, Swiss record shops, the decline of hip hop, and being a reluctant front-man.

visuals – it blends my old stuff, my new stuff, and The Simonsound stuff in a really danceable set. The Brighton gig’s on the 2nd March at the Concorde, which is frighteningly soon. We want to make people have a good time.

Your third album ‘Statement of Intent’ just came out – how has your style evolved?

After a lot of trial and error I’ve gone back to what I do best, which is straight-up hip hop. What’s different is the collaborators: I’ve been open to live musicians and branched out exploring bluesy British jazz, especially horns, and classic Blue Note sounds. This will sound cheesy – Manfred Mann influenced me too. And I never viewed working with Jurassic 5 as a big deal because I grew up with those guys, but to work with Edan and Mr Lif felt like a coup. Edan doesn’t put out many records, but when he does, it’s hip hop perfection.

The song we did, ‘Spaceship Earth’, is rap meets psychedelic rock. There’s a couple of almost cinematic, soundtrack-based things, which I think are the best tracks I’ve ever done in that area.

Who are your favourite Brighton musicians or producers?

Derriere, my girlfriend Sarah’s band – they’re old rhythm’n’blues. Beta Hector are another of my favourites, and to be honest, most of my friends revolve around those two. Some friends my age put on a night called The Vinyl Veterans, which caters for good hip hop and funk the way we like it.

How do you think the hip hop scene changed in the last decade?

It’s got worse and worse. It’s not about how good your music is but how good you are at self-publicity. Hip hop for me is a culture and an art form: DJing, MCing, graffiti, breakdancing... There are so many aspects that you can be involved in and participate in straight away. Everyone thinks they can rap or make a beat; you know, everyone thinks they’re a DJ. I don’t want to sound like I’m telling people off but it’s hard to find hip hop nights now where there’s the right balance of creating a welcoming party atmosphere, of men and women, where the music is good and, dare I say it, positive. I don’t want to listen to gangster nonsense.

Do you still get the same buzz digging for records as you used to?

Tell us about your new live show.

Oh yeah, absolutely. I rarely buy new releases but there’s nothing I like I am really looking forward to it but I’m not a more than getting lost in a dusty old record shop and going through piles frontman with a massive ego – I’m happier in the and piles of old records with a portable record player until I find that background. Music can be a life-affirming celebration, an arms-in-theair care-avoider, a memory marker for your loveliest moments. Yes, that’s all well and good for people with stuff to celebrate and be cloyingly happy about. For the rest of us, however, it’s something to wallow in as we blunder through life pinballing from one emotional catastrophe to another. Here’s half a dozen of our anguish anthems.

ABBA

‘The Winner Takes It All’

Just a pop band, right? Not at all – haven’t you listened to ABBA lyrics? Every good song contains a crippling lack of confidence, even the Alan Partridge-adored ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’. Taking the Fleetwood Mac model of all getting divorced and then making an album about it, ABBA upped the ante with the blokes writing the songs and getting their exes to sing them. Brutal. “Tell me does (s)he kiss, like I used to kiss you?” asks Bjorn of Agnetha through her own voice. Still, there’s some pretty pianos near the end. (JK)

‘Hurt’

Pretty much overlooked in its original Nine Inch Nails incarnation, the Cash injection to his cover version was one of pure woe. And who can blame him – he recorded the song and its attendant video knowing he was on the way out, with its derelict museum imagery and piano cover-closing finale hammering the point home like blunt nails in a coffin. His missus June skulks about in the clip too, offering no light relief to the situation with the hindsight of her own imminent demise.

Poignant, poetic and perfectly pessimistic. (NC)

‘How Soon Is Now?’

A mid-80s student staple that continues to cheer the modern miserablist malcontent, this song challenges all others in the affliction stakes of gloom. “We’re going clubbing - that’ll be fun, right Moz? Cheer you up a bit? Well, it won’t if you go and stand on your own, leave on your own, go home and cry and want to die. You’re really not trying, are you?” Morrissey’s lyrics are unfairly maligned - the Pope of Mope etc - but in this case he’s really only got himself to blame. The suicidal whining

‘The Boxer’

It doesn’t matter how good a person you are, how hard you try – get struck down by bad luck and the big city can chew you up and spit you out. The pugilist in question has been fucked over, having “squandered my resistance on a pocket full of mumbles, such are promises”. He’s not looking for much, just a low paid job but ends up taking comfort with prostitutes, the only place he can find affection. Wow, he’s really been beaten down. Still, ends on a positive note, right? “I am leaving/but the fighter still remains.” The towel has been thrown in. (JK)

MALCOLM MIDDLETON ‘Devil And The Angel’

Pave your heart over with slabs of sleet-beaten, stone-cold concrete on a suicidal Sunday in Glasgow. You could pick most tracks from Malcolm Middleton – the former Arab Strapper with song titles like ‘Death Love Depression Love Death’ and ‘Ballad Of Fuck All’ – and be left profoundly morose. The amazing Scottish singer songwriter hints at salvation among the despair in trademark style in this one, but as usual there can only be one winner. Guitars multiplied by gloom to the million. ‘And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda’

“Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood” said author Frank McCourt. Similarly, worse than the ordinary miserable song is the miserable Irish song, and worse yet is the miserable Pogues song. Dental role model Shane McGowan excels in writing romanticised tales of woe, but here he covers an Australian 70s folk song about a boy plucked from his carefree, outback-wandering life and sent to Gallipoli to get his legs ripped off by Turkish artillery in WW1.

Incredibly, this has never been used to soundtrack a forces recruitment ad. (RK)
