SOURCE HELPS WARM YOU UP
Oh god, it’s bleak at the moment, isn’t it? Cuts, cold nights, new Kings of Leon album – it’s enough to make you hibernate early. Or alternatively we can all stop moaning and try and have some fun, take our minds off the misery. That’s what we plan to do, starting with firing up the new Lyrebirds single, cranking up Mumdance’s Mad Decent outing and winding down with Mirrors’ latest. Then we’ll hit a bunch of the amazing gigs on offer – Born Ruffians, Liars and Caribou for a start. All that costs money of course, but if you can scrabble the change together for a pint The Kin Bar is putting on some great local bands for gratis. And before the Photo Biennial leaves for a couple of years, we’re gonna take another opportunity to see the best free thing to happen in Brighton for ages. Alternatively if you’re really struggling you can have us cheer you up every Friday at Under the Volcano, the brilliant new night from us, Teen Creeps and Proper Gander at The Yard (you know, it used to be the Ocean Rooms). We’ll be banging out tunes that can only help to make you smile, even if the damn government has taken your job/ benefits/lover.

TIP TOP TOP LIPS
November’s arrival signals another month of facial topiary in aid of prostate cancer awareness – yes, it’s Movember once again. For the uninitiated, this means a month of moustache growing for the gents and possibly some sustained Veet-avoidance for the ladies as well. The movember.com website has all the details you need to register, alongside grooming tips, events and competitions. Get growing, get yourself sponsored and raise some dough for a good cause. You can always have sex in December, after all.
HERO TO ZERO
As Brighton venues continue to topple like dominos, New Hero appears to be the latest to join the ranks of locked doors and P45s. We’re not exactly sure what’s happened there – it’s not going to get turned into a Tesco and there’s been no report of noise problems – it just seems like the numbers weren’t coming through the doors, even as a massive facelift to the nights and promoters was getting underway. We hear that there are plans to return to its r’n’b club days, although the official line seems to be that the club will remain closed for the foreseeable future.
CONCORDE CATWALK
BrightonLovesFashion is a showcase for the work of five local fashion designers including recent Brighton University graduates, all in aid of Brighton Women’s Centre. The Concorde gives up its Sunday on the 7th for this show planned, promoted and produced entirely through voluntary work and contributions; complete with a local make-up artist and local music. Promising a glitzy night of VIP tickets, theatrical outfits, and a smug, do-good feeling in the pit of your stomach, there are much worse (and less worthwhile) ways to spend your post-roast Sunday.
BIG GIG WINS
Recognising talent in all areas of the music industry, the Live UK Music Business Awards has awarded not one but two prizes to our great city. Josh Dean of Family Entertainments bagged Best Indie promoter while the Concorde 2 claimed the oddly titled but highly sought-after Best Venue Teamwork (Under 800 Capacity). It just goes to show that despite venue closures and noise abatement notices being banded around like flyers; Brighton’s
Page 4
still highly regarded for putting on some of the best shows around. Congratulations guys, here’s to another good year for music in Brighton.
GARLANDS FOR JUDY
Coming to town on Sunday 7th is Judy Berger, leading the vintage fash-pack at Brighton racecourse for Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair. ‘Old clothing isn’t old hat’ says Berger, and rightly so, with even Daisy Lowe racing through the rails when she set up shop at Vintage at Goodwood this year. Having wowed each city in turn on her whirlwind tour of the country, with labels like Dior, Ossie Clarke and YSL hidden among the rest, we advise getting an early bird ticket to get you in at 11am and snap up those gems first.
GRUB PRIZE GRAB
We all know how much Brightonians love their food, so it comes as no surprise that three out of the six Sussex Young Chef Of The Year contenders have BN postcodes. Daniel Whittle, 21, of Temptations Cafe (where we had a delectable fry-up a few issues back) will be competing along with Will Stayner, 25, from Hotel Du Vin and Simon Duncan, 20, from Sam’s Of Brighton. All have a rep for being pretty darn good – let’s hope they make it through the live cook-off round on Tuesday 9th where they’ll be serving a three-course meal for the judges.
TUNE TEACHING
If you want to get involved in making music, head down to Access To Music’s open day on Saturday 20th at Scream Studios. ATM run Digital and Performing Musician courses, mentoring the students and giving them the opportunity to earn their stripes gigging around town. Workshops and masterclasses help round the raw individual into a lean, mean, record-selling machine – and you don’t need armfuls of GCSEs to get in, just a passion for music. Britpop historians will be interested to note that Martin Rossiter out of Gene teaches there. He sang “this is as good as it gets” – for aspiring stars of tomorrow this course is just that. Go to www.accesstomusic.co.uk for more info.
BEER ETC
Beer festivals can sometimes be slightly snobbish real ale aficionado affairs. But this one, running from 25th-28th in a heated marquee next to the West Pier, has cheerfully thrown open its doors to Stella, Heineken and Guinness as well as local microbreweries, and even spirits, cocktails and wine ‘for the ladies’. Hog roasts and food stands make it a very decent day out indeed – and you can leave your pipe and knitted sweater at home. See www.beerfestbrighton.co.uk for more ale details.

teen creeps at under the volcano
New In Town
Words by Matt Barker Nick Coquet, james kendall, lydia stockbridge
UNDER THE VOLCANO •
Choosing a club that all your mates want to go to is a pain in the arse. Well, Dynamite Sal and Iain Huddy – the brains behind We Luv Pop and Hold Up! – have grafted Proper Gander and Teen Creeps into a new Friday night at The Yard called Under The Volcano, and SOURCE is going to be the glue. The basement stays bass-heavy; a serious dubstep and drum’n’bass night from the Proper Gander boys, while Teen Creeps provide a super-cool trip into the more obscure end of synth pop, punk and electro on the middle floor. We’ll drag our favourite DJ mates and band members to the upstairs cocktail bar for a right party. Arguments sorted then.
Green Door Store •
Fire up the ticker tape parade, there’s a new venue in town, and it looks like a really good one too. We don’t know about the bands playing yet but the ‘space’ – as interior design wankers say – is incredible, a knackered archway under the station with loads of character. We like it so much that we shot our cover there and the placement (on the road opposite the Prince Albert) means there shouldn’t be any noise problems. Thank god.
the HONEY •
The mega-club that is The Honey has been transformed into a state-of-the-art place to spend your weekends. Either as a VIP sipping Cristal from the new glass-fronted lounge overlooking the DJ booth or dancing yourself skinny under the gaze of the new Showtec lighting rig, the new facelift ensures no one goes away disappointed. They’ve moved the cloakroom and foyer area around too, so there’s no more stifling wait in the queue for Hat Club on Saturdays, either.
RAG TRADE POP-UP SALE
It’s the month of all things thrifty and luxe as Brighton Dome plays host to the Rag Trade Pop-Up Sale, with free entry all weekend starting on Saturday 27th to get your hands on designer dresses to die for at a fraction of the cost. If you didn’t catch them in September, it’s worth a look-in to bag a knock-down Viv Westwood, Reiss or Marc Jacobs. Or if you’re looking to make a bit of easy money, bring your cast-offs in early to the Dome foyer and sell ‘em on, sisters.

URBAN OUTFITTERS
Christmas will be coming early this year as Urban Outfitters comes to town on Friday 12th. They’re taking up residence at the old Borders store in Churchill Square, with two floors dedicated to the most cutting edge brands around, as well as their own stuff too. APC, Surface To Air, Back by Ann-Sofie Back and Peter Jensen are just some of the oh-sohip labels being stocked right now. For those who can’t wait that long, check out their online store at www.urbanoutfitters.co.uk .
BRIGHTON BEST •
Sussex’s famed WJ King Brewery have come up with a new nectar set to quench our thirsts. Since taking over the company with business partner Nigel, head brewer Ian Burgess (formerly of Harvey’s of Lewes brewery fame) has concocted Brighton Best. Soon to be a sure-fire hit on the ale market, it’s available in 36 pubs across the city – see what you make of Brighton’s latest addition to the taps.
SUNDAY SERVICE •
Sundays at Above Audio are taking shape as the sophisticated way to see live music. Every Sunday evening we can expect to be treated to a cherry-picked array of local acts courtesy of Sunday Service, with Forestears, The Self Help Group and the folk blues of Apples For Eve. Relax in the plush upstairs bar and treat yourself to a board of Sussex cheeses and specially chosen red wines to accompany, or for the sweettoothed; cakes and puds from Baked Bliss. Head down and indulge.
XUMA •
The funky folk behind the Fortune Of War’s recently revived, er, fortunes are taking over Xuma on the Seven Dials, which means a bunch of good stuff on the horizon. Friday is now The High Brow Low Volume Good Music Night, with special guest DJs playing anonymously as well as new talent, all spinning top tunes from the 50s up to the 10s. Saturdays are special guest nights, with the 27th seeing FIP DJs from Paris airing their eclectic playlists. All sounds like good news to us.
Beyond Days
During this year’s Great Escape festival, the surprise venue find had to be Beyond Retro, with it’s warehouse-proportioned interior. Gracing that worryingly high balcony were the likes of Theophilus London, La Shark and Othello Wolf. Having done that, local promoters of excellence So Darn So have secured more gigs there (titled Beyond Days), starting on the 19th and 20th of this month. Beyond Retro are also celebrating their first anniversary at the Hope with a big free knees-up featuring Museum of Bellas Artes, a Maccabees DJ set, plus lots of freebies.

Letters ENJOYED THE PAPAL VISIT
Cheers for your Brighton Live gigs. I went to the first one with Monsters Build Mean Robots and it was so good I ended up coming back for all three. Great bands – AK/DK completely blew me away and it was good to see Holy Vessels after seeing them support The Maccabees. But the best of all was last. Pope Joan gave 16578% in their performance. They’re gonna be huge, right? Everyone else seemed to enjoy it so I guess so. My girlfriend couldn’t keep her eye off the drummer after he took his top off but I can forgive them that. This time anyway. Jack, via email Hey, no worries – we enjoyed it all as much as everyone else. We want to thank Conrad who kept things running smoothly, Dave and Anthony for lending us Jam, and Mark, Alison and the Brighton Live board for making it all possible. But mainly we want to thank God and our parents. But, yeah, it was ace – Andre from Pope Joan’s torso winning Best In Show.
IMAGE SEARCH
Can I just ask where you got the image for your Grinderman cover from? I really like it and wanted to track it down. Jon, via www.brightonsource.co.uk It’s a painting by Alex Young that he did exclusively for SOURCE. When it turned up we cheered – it virtually got a standing ovation. If you want to check out more of Alex’s work head over to brainofalexyoung.com. His paintings can cost up to £4,000 but he also sells prints for much less. He’s a Brighton legend whose work you’ll have seen more often than you know.
DARK IN THE CAVE
I love Nick Cave but he sounds like hard work. Still, amazing that you got an audience with the man. The new Grinderman album is a real grower but I’m still loving the first one. Louie, via email Hard work perhaps isn’t quite the right word but he’s pretty intense, certainly – but that’s what you want from him. We felt like we’d sparred with him and come out second best. But in an intellectual battle of wills on the subject of ‘Nick Cave’ we were always going to lose.
Page 8
PICTURES PITCH PERFECT
Thanks for your stuff on the Photo Biennial (is that how you spell it?). I went to the Co-Op and there were loads of stunning images – especially the returning soldiers, the Indian photos with people sleeping in them and the fashiony African portraits. The vegetable thing is proper shit though. I love Martin Parr but I think he went mental the day he chose that. Vanessa, via email The Biennial has been amazing, hasn’t it? The only disappointment was that that Alex Soth didn’t get to shoot here himself. Someone get him back to finish the job properly.
AM I DOTTY?
Can I ask what the red dots mean? I’m new to Brighton so have only just started to read SOURCE. Am I being a bit dim? Jo, via email No, not at all. It’s a thing we’ve been doing with the council this year that shows the homegrown talent performing in the city. If you see a red dot (•) it means that the band/DJ/artist/club night is from Brighton. It’s a subject close to our heart, and the core of the magazine’s ethos. All the people we interview in the mag are local, all the reviews too, plus every event we cover is happening in town. Local ‘til death.
FRY-UP AWARDED GOLD
Just had a quick flick through the magazine and thought I’d let you know that you missed an absolute gem. The Golden Cannon on St George’s Road in Kemptown does a cracking fry-up – £5.50 will get you two sausages, two bits of bacon, two eggs, two fried tomatoes, beans, mushrooms and toast. Everything is changeable and it really hits the spot. Even if you never do another fried breakfast feature, give it a go – it won’t disappoint. As far as I know they serve it from 10am till noon during the week and 10am till 4pm on a Sunday. Filip, via email As far as you know?! You sound pretty clued up on it – are you sure you’re not the chef? It’s certainly a glowing report and it sounds right up our street. Thanks for the heads up.

Audio Tues 2nd
This four-piece band from Northamptonshire, led by the brothers Ross and Ben Duffy, arrive in Brighton as part of their UK tour to support the release of their self-titled debut LP. Their anthemic brand of electronic pop is as perfect for the blogs as it is for Radio 1, so the clamour between Brighton’s promoters and venues to secure the band on this tour was very competitive – predictably a national promoter won the booking. Hot. (TR)

Concorde 2 Weds 3rd
Californian dance punks !!! (normally pronounced ‘chk chk chk’, ‘pow pow pow’ or ‘that band with the exclamation marks’) are coming to weave their magic at Concorde 2 this month, and are renowned for their chaotic, jumpy live shows. Their members have been on the scene for decades, and their rock, punk and dance fusion paved the crossover way for acts such as Bloc Party, Hot Chip and Kasabian, with lazy vocals, speedy synths and pared-back beats. (JMM)
Casiotone For The Painfully Alone Prince Albert Weds 3rd
‘Celebrating 13 years of obscurity’, Casiotone makes his final curtain call this month with his last show ever. The jewel in One Inch Badge’s crown is bidding goodbye to his moniker and turning to musical pastures new, so don’t worry too much – we’re sure we’ll be hearing Ashworth under a new guise soon. OIB’s latest signing, the multimedia-utilising folk loopings of Robert Stillman, provide support. (LS)

I BLAME COCO Brighton Ballroom Weds 3rd
It’s one thing to be the daughter of Gordon Sumner, aka Sting, but Eliot Pauline Styler-Sumner, aka Coco, actually sounds remarkably like her father too. Her good looks previously earned her work as a model before she turned to acting, finally deciding a career in the music industry suited best. Thankfully the resulting debut album shows us she’s taken the lessons from her father’s love of pop drenched in reggae as much as she has his lessons in using pseudonyms. (TR)
EDWYN COLLINS Komedia Thurs 4th
Edwyn Collins’ re-emergence as a performer following his severe health problems in 2005 (two brain haemorrhages for a start) have been well documented, but it’s been, as his old band Orange Juice would have it, ‘Onwards And Upwards’ for him ever since. Collins’ latest album ‘Losing Sleep’, his first to be fully written and recorded post-hospitalisation, brought old Postcard pal Roddy Frame, Johnny Marr and assorted Cribs, Drums, Franzes and Magic Numbers along to assist their hero. Collins is one of UK indie’s true gents, and it’s wonderful to have him back. (DL)
MEN
Prince Albert Thurs 4th
Brooklyn has always been a hotbed of talent, but over the last year or two it’s been on turbo-drive. Hot off that production line is this collective who arrive with a level of pedigree, formed as they are from members of various New York bands such as Hirsute and, most prominently, Le Tigre. JD Samson (from the latter) seems the main driver, in a line-up that often rotates. The charged-up music takes tips from all of their electroclash roots, but still has a pop freshness that suits 2010. (TR)

MYSTERY JETS
Yann Tiersen
Concorde 2 Fri 5th
Yann Tiersen is probably best known for writing the Amelie soundtrack, but in his native France he’s recognised as one of their most impressive and thought-provoking composers. His diversity of style and original approach see him using discarded typewriters and toy pianos as instruments, yet he remains critically acclaimed and is compared favourably with Chopin. Not to be written off as solely classical, his recent live tours have seen frantic switches between instruments and a focus on the electric guitar, so this should be a truly captivating performance. (JMM)
WILD NOTHING
Jam Fri 5th
Will 2010 be remembered as the year that was dominated by the chillwave genre? [Wouldn’t have thought so – Ed]. Well, there’s certainly been a plethora of shoegazing artists drifting over from the East Coast of America all year, but few have plucked out as much melody from the typically cloudy music as this solo artist. Jack Tatum released his debut album ‘Gemini’ earlier in the year to some serious acclaim and plenty of online buzz, so this should be a mesmerising performance to look forward to. (TR)
Veronica Falls
Hope Sat 6th
Seeing this show will truly raise your hipster-goth credentials. With songs such as ‘Found Love In A Graveyard’ and ‘Beachy Head’, these guys make lo-fi pop punk in such a nonchalant style you can’t help but shoegaze your way through one of their sets in a helpless fit of apathy. Conjuring up references of Crystal Stilts, and the new wave of surf punk bands like Vivian Girls, Wavves and Fair-Ohs, we have a feeling these guys will be making it big pretty soon. (LS)
CLOUD CONTROL Prince Albert Weds 10th
This Antipodean four-piece have already released their debut album ‘Bliss Release’ in Australia, but sadly us Brits have to wait a little longer. Perhaps the fact that they’re returning for another
Page 12
Brighton showcase so soon after their last one back in July suggests that a release is imminent. If so, it comes with a massive stamp of approval from us, as it’s absolutely rammed with virtually perfect, harmonic pop tunes. Get a taste of it at this small venue and you’ll see precisely what we mean. (TR)
Mystery Jets Concorde 2 Weds 10th
Mystery Jets return to the stage brandishing their third studio album ‘Serotonin’, the eagerly awaited follow-up to 2008’s acclaimed ‘Twenty One’. An altogether more coherent album then their previous efforts, witnessing ‘Serotonin’ live at the Concorde 2 looks set to be a spectacular event. Mystery Jets are a must-see band, especially in an intimate venue like this – the perfect live show if you want an evening of fun Britpop and an amazingly quirky performance. (HM)
GOLD PANDA
Audio Thurs 11th
Imagine if it actually was a gold panda. We’ve all staggered past the Brighton Sealife Centre and thought; “I should go in there one day. Maybe they’ve got a shark.” Well, maybe they have but there’s certainly no gold pandas charging about. That honour is reserved for Audio, which tonight plays host to the Peckham producer’s lush electronic ecstasy, as showcased on winning debut album ‘Lucky Shiner’. Let’s just hope the Chinese don’t get wind of the gig. Their animal rights record is terrible! (BG)
Hauschka
Duke of York’s Thurs 11th
FatCat Records sure know a good artist when they see one, and Hauschka is no exception, playing an intimate show at the Duke of York’s cinema this month as part of a tour in support of his third album, ‘Foreign Landscapes’. The usual melee of gaffa tape, felt and other stationery accoutrements that Hauschka places within the piano to create his original works, will be making an appearance alongside this forward-thinking pianist and composer. If you don’t believe us, you’ll just have to go to the show and see for yourselves. (LS)

Liars
Concorde 2 Fri 12th
LA-based Liars are returning to Brighton for the first time in three years, bringing the ‘Sisterworld’ live show down south before heading to the Constellations Festival in Leeds. Angus and co, known for their thunderous, tribal and often brutal sonic terrorism, have been described as ‘difficult listening’. But for a band who clearly have no boundaries and song titles like ‘The Frozen Glacier Of Mastadon Blood’, who knows what horrors they’ll stir up? One thing is for sure, they’ll rattle your soul. (KK)
THE DIVINE COMEDY Komedia Sun 14th
Neil Hannon’s last album was entirely about cricket. Well, no one expected him to come up with a drunken, rowdy paean to rugby, a collection of chair-throwing footy anthems or a sophisticated motorik electro invocation of the pace and momentum of Formula 1. 2009’s self-satisfied ‘Duckworth Lewis Method’ chronicled all things stump-related; featuring such choice cuts as ‘The Coin Toss’, ‘The Nightwatchman’ and ‘The End Of The Over’. All of which leads SOURCE to hope rain stops play this evening. Howzat, Hannon? (BG)
The Peacocks Prince Albert Sun 14th
This month sees the return of the Swiss rockabilly punk rock’n’roll trio The Peacocks to the Prince Albert. Having sold out previous shows here, this promises to be another packed pub pogo-ing around to one of the best rock’n’roll bands in the world. More than able support comes from German instrumental surfabillies The Razorblades, the Ramones-meets-Buddy Holly pop punk favourites Zatopeks and psychobilly from Go-Go-Cult. A night of riffs for quiffs. (DB)

In their 80s heyday, Nordic pop survivors a-ha brought UK teens many wondrous things: the innovative ‘Take On Me’ video (OK, it’s hardly ‘Avatar’, but minds boggled in 1985), some ferociously difficult spelling problems for Smash Hits subs, and Morten Harket’s enviable good looks and glacier-shattering vocal range. But now, the end is near, and fabulously a-ha bow out after this world tour, titled with wonderful good humour, the ‘Ending On A High Note’ tour. Don’t worry, darling, Mummy just has something in her eye. (DL)
Les Savy Fav
Komedia Mon 15th
New York City favourites Les Savy Fav hit Brighton, and hit could be the figurative word if their nutty, balding, bearded front-man has anything to do with it. Far from the typical image of a mathrock geek in glasses and a polo shirt, Tim Harrington prefers to don a cape and underpants. Spectacle aside, Les Savy Fav remain an influential and innovative band, with catchy tunes and a longevity which command more credibility than most art-rock bands can aspire to. Despite the costumes. (JMM)
DIAMOND RINGS Prince Albert Mon 15th
What we thought was simply a side project of John O’Regan, from the band The D’Urbevilles, turns out to be a focused money-maker as he arrives in Brighton on a UK-wide tour. Renaming himself ‘John O’ and adorning his eyes with facepaint initially got him dismissed as yet another 80s John Hughes soundtrack fan, but it turned out to be a rather innovative creation. The resulting album ‘Special Affections’ shows off a variety of skills, producing a bagful of heartfelt songs with many strong pop hooks. (TR)

What’s next for Damon Albarn? The opera’s done, Blur have got back together and smashed it into the middle of next year and with Gorillaz he’s halfway to rejuvenating most of pop’n’roll’s deluded, bewildered and fallen icons. Well, NASA’s mission to Mars seems to have run aground, no cure for cancer is forthcoming and the Sagrada Familia is still incomplete. It’s a mark of the man that no objective or ambition seems beyond him. But what’s next? Brighton, that’s what. Lucky Brighton. (BG)

Canadian electronic music bod Caribou just produced one of the year’s most omnivorous dance albums. ‘Swim’ stridently stepped over musical boundaries, mixing beguiling 80s influences, 60s psychedelia and early house music to produce a pretty aloof but stirring LP. Viscerally challenging and effortlessly effective, Caribou is quite popular at the moment, so obtain that ticket early. (DV)
BEACH HOUSE
Concorde 2 Thurs 25th
For an ‘indie’ act, having your debut album named the 16th best of 2006 by Pitchfork must be quite a buzz. But Baltimore duo Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally are surely getting used to the accolades.

CHRIS BROKAW & GEOFF FARINA
Freebutt Sun 28th
This New York duo may be something of a Marmite band, but don’t listen to those folk who dismiss their noisy, punked pop music, because their debut album ‘Treats’ is an absolute winner. Their hi-energy tunes, sometimes crashing, sometimes nursery-rhymecute, will bowl you over live, especially with the striking, femme fatale singer Alexis Krauss jumping around. They’re one of the most hyped bands of 2010, but their ability to hook you in and hold you there (by the throat), is breathtakingly good. We can’t wait. (TR)
Caribou
January’s stunning third studio effort ‘Teen Dream’ showcased a band entirely at ease in their own skin – hardly surprising given what a comforting, wistful, expansive and lucidly realised collection of songs they had conjured, drifting in from that fantastical world we call ‘dream-pop’. Your move, Pitchfork. (BG)
At last, some live music quiet enough to slip under the radar of the Freebutt’s noise limiters, this acoustic pairing of Chris Brokaw (Codeine, Come) and Geoff Farina (Karate, Glorytellers) promises an evening of downbeat songs from the pre-WW2 American songbook. Brokaw and Farina’s album ‘The Angel’s Message To Me’ saw the pair interpret blues and ragtime songs by the likes of Blind Blake and Rev. Gary Davis in a faithfully stripped-back manner, including some very familiar standards. Not the cheeriest way to celebrate live music’s return to the troubled venue, but worthy of everyone’s support. (DL)
HEAVEN 17
Corn Exchange Tues 30th
Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh were determined not to become the twin Pete Bests of synth pop, following their 1980 ousting from the pre-chart fame Human League. So they recruited genial vocalist Glenn Gregory and produced one of the era’s defining albums, ‘Penthouse And Pavement’ (recorded in shifts at the same studio the League were using to tape their defining album ‘Dare’, icily). Heaven 17’s own hits would come later, but ‘Penthouse’s thick electro-funk and ironic foreshadowing of 80s materialism has aged well. Minus Marsh, the reformed group perform the album in its entirety tonight. (DL)

THE EIGHTIES MATCHBOX B-LINE DISASTER WORDS BY NICK COQUET
We first saw Eighties Matchbox years ago at a Universal Music conference, playing like demons to music biz suits at 9am, on a bill also featuring the Sugababes. A fair amount’s happened since then and they’re back in town this month. You’ve got quite a history – major and indie label releases, and then you did it yourself with ‘Blood & Fire’... Guy McKnight: Yes, we formed 12 years ago but didn’t play any gigs for six months, we just had a party and became a local laughing stock so we thought we’d better write some songs and show people we meant business. We put a single out on Radiate then Universal picked us up. Chris Goss produced the second album; he was flavour of the month at the time after QOTSA. We learnt a lot from him, not just about music. But after that, yes, it was a big change to make “Blood & Fire’ ourselves. Where did you record it? Guy: We did it at Tristan (McLenahan – guitar)’s dad’s studio in France. He’s not loaded or anything, he’s just a musician who’s collected pieces of equipment over the years – he’s just got a real passion for music. We saved up a load of our fees from gigs, paid our way over there and Tristan’s brother engineered it.
The current single ‘So Long Goodnight’ sounds very commercial… Guy: Tom (Diamantopoulo – drums) wrote that and he has a natural ability to write pop songs, maybe he wouldn’t appreciate me saying that – but it’s meant as a compliment. I mean, I don’t think I can do that. But our favourite bands when we started were Pixies, Stooges, 13th Floor Elevators, Love, The Clash – The Doors had their 11-minute songs but they had pop songs too. I love the band Love – they’re sinister and psychedelic but it’s still pop. I think it follows the rudiments of popular music in that it has verses and choruses, hooks, but crafted to be palatable. Dominic: It’s on the borderlines of acceptable... You’ve never really been part of a scene? Dominic: The band’s always been on the outskirts of any scenes. Matchbox has never really considered what the genre is; whenever people ask I never know what to say, we all have such different influences. People say gothabilly but that doesn’t really fit, it’s so far away from that. Guy: It was an accident, I thought everyone would think we were a Doors/Pixies/Stooges rip-off band but no one ever said that. I had dreams of playing much slower, creeping music to croon to but we had too much energy and we were on the wrong drugs when we started. The more gigs we played the faster we got. All of a sudden we were this fucking weird punk band…
There was a six-year gap between the last two albums, are you back into the cycle of album/tour/promo now? Guy: We’ve got a deal now and the label are happy for us to What can we expect from the Brighton show? release music any which way we want, downloads, EP, album or Guy: We’re planning on playing the ‘Horse Of The Dog’ album. whatever. Dominic: Well, it might not be the full album but it’s just for Dominic Knight: We’ve been constantly writing since we got Brighton, or maybe London as well. But we’re ending the tour back from the last tour in June. There’s tracks out there and we here and we thought it would be nice to do a bit of an extra set may be doing something soon, after the usual set. The last gig for The we’ll see how it goes. There’s Great Escape at Hector’s House was no definite schedule, the deal amazing – there were a few hundred LIVE: Digital, Thurs 4th gives us freedom to do it how people queuing round the block who ALBUM: ‘Blood & Fire’ out now we want, it just depends what couldn’t get in, so we really want to do WEB: myspace.com/eightiesmatchboxblinedisaster we’re going to do with it really. something nice for them.

The Hampton Saturdays
Long before it became the name of a Facebook app, and DJing on iPods felt like a good idea, iLike was the democratisation of DJing removing the tyranny of having to build a vinyl collection and learning to mix. I know this because about seven years ago I started the night with the lovely Shimmy Hendrix. One night we got iLike kicked out of 93 Feet East for being too rowdy and some of the young DJs who came to battle each other urged us to carry on somewhere else. “Why don’t you do it,” we said, and that’s exactly what they’ve done. Take your iPod or iPhone down and give it a go. Just don’t get too rowdy. (JK)
COUNT & SINDEN Digital Thurs 4th
DJ tag-team the Count & Sinden are doing the rounds this month, touring their debut album, ‘Mega Mega Mega’ out on Domino records. Infamously hitting the charts with ‘Beeper’ back in the day, becoming de rigueur in irritating mobile phone ringtones, the duo have stuck it out. Shunning a mainstream label in preference of the more credible indie route, does this mean the boys are growing up and out of their comic-book hero monikers? We’ll have to wait and see. (LS)
BENJI B
Audio Fri 5th
Smooth-talking darling of Radio 1, Benji B is Mary Anne Hobbs’ late-night replacement, so you’ll be hearing a lot more of him in the coming months. He’s highly regarded for his versatile ability to seamlessly straddle genres and for having a nose for sniffing out the newest producers. Expect tunes you know and tunes you want to know, from hip hop, house, soul and broken beat. Support comes from two-step pioneer Zed Bias aka Maddslinky and Tru Thoughts’ Hint. (JMM)

BIG BEAT REUNION 2 • Concorde Fri 5th
Ten or 12 years ago big beat ruled Brighton – people used to travel down from all over the place to go clubbing here. That was basically down to the Big Beat Boutique, one of the most exciting nights we’ve ever been to. There was much leaping about and spilling of beer as DJs like the emerging Fatboy Slim slammed hip hop into house music and emerged with a set of tunes you talked about on the way home (no ‘journeys’ here). After the huge success of the first reunion, another batch of the regulars get to look back – Jon Carter, the Propellerheads, Aphrodite, the infamous Derek Dahlarge and more. The revival starts here. (JK)
CARTE BLANCHE
Coalition Sat 6th
Riton and DJ Medhi absolutely rocked Sonar this year with a set of banging electro topped with the former beefing up the beats on a 909 drum machine. They looked like they were having the time of their lives, and the chirpy electro – a hyped-up mix of 80s soul pop, 90s house music and ghettotech – reflects that. Riton often does his best work in collaboration, and this hook-up with the smooth Ed Banger producer is as good as you’d expect. Might be worth getting tickets for this, it could be busy. (JK)
WILEY
Concorde Sat 6th
Even for someone known for being – how can we put this – a bit feisty, grime pioneer Wiley has had a right year of it: quitting his label Island, sacking his manager over Twitter and giving away 200 new tracks at once (including the album Island had planned to put out). For a man who’s now, by all intents and purposes, a pop star it’s incredible behaviour, but could lead to anything happening on stage tonight. Which isn’t a bad thing – we hope – as long as he turns up on time. Download the 11 zip files of this year’s tracks for a heads up. (JK)

ANNIE MAC
Digital Thurs 11th
If you want to see Radio 1’s liveliest Dubliner you had best be quick on this one as the hyped-up mistress of, er, hype always sells out Digital. This is of course because she’s the dominating leader of Generation Y’s clubbers, but also because she always brings with her a quality line-up. This time the badly-named but on-message Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs join Ellie Goulding’s white-hot producer, Starsmith, on show. (TR)
MAGNETIC MAN Digital Thurs 11th
The towering behemoth that is Magnetic Man pulls up in Brighton for all the screw-facing/foot-stomping/laserreaching you could possibly ask for on a Thursday night. Labelled as the first dubstep ‘supergroup’, their material is in a different style to most of their individual work – like the dub equivalent of Cream, with Skream as Eric Clapton, Benga as Jack Bruce and Artwork as Ginger Baker. We’re not entirely sure if that analogy works but check them out. (CH)
JOKER
Audio Fri 12th
Joker’s remix of ‘Cruel Intentions’ by Simian Mobile Disco and Beth Ditto ranks just below the Dogtanian theme song for how long it gets stuck in our head, uninvited. Forgiving this, Bristol’s Joker is one of dubstep’s biggest producers and is known as a key artist moving the genre forward. He’s also known for being young (21), seeing colours when making tracks (mostly purple) and his prolific remixing, so listen out for plenty of catchy pop songs in his wonky overloaded reconstructions. ^I’M WITH STUPID^ • Hope Sat 13th
This party-in-a-box returns courtesy of a new venue in the shape of The Hope on the second Saturday of the month. They’re promising gorilla suits, a pantomime cow and “stupid DJs throwing cash up in the air” as they bang out a playlist of high street hits and ‘big ones’ from motorik rock, future hip hop, crossover disco, and daft pop, from 8pm til very late. (LS)
LAURENT GARNIER Concorde 2 Sat 13th
If you’re a certain age, the name Stompa Phunk will mean some of the best underground house-driven parties you’ve been to in Brighton. From the Funky Buddha to Audio, they punched way above their weight with amazing residents (Kenny Hawkes, Radio Slave and many more) and incredible guests like Derrick Carter playing in a 250-capacity club. Perhaps the biggest coup was getting French techno legend Laurent Garnier into Audio for an extended DJ set. For the return of Stompa Phunk they’ve upped things by getting him to play live. Plus there’s talk of getting all the residents to play in the bar. We’re not sure which we’re most excited about. (JK)
TORTURE GARDEN
The Yard Sat 16th
Legendary fetish night Torture Garden has got a long history in Brighton, popping in and out for the last decade or so. Despite some controversy, the night has always been less intimidating than its London outing and now that it’s found the, seemingly, perfect home in The Yard, it ought to really make a mark. As much about dressing up as the serious sex stuff, the London event might have the huge shows but if you want to dip your rubber stockinged-toe into the fetish world there’s no better place to start. FOUR TET
Coalition Tues 16th
Brighton favourite Four Tet returns to the coast for another night of pioneering electronica, showing his diverse influences from folk, techno, hip hop and jazz and amalgamating them in a warm sampling, sequencing soup. His unique and multi-layered style has spawned a thousand imitators, and someone who can clearly name Four Tet as an influence is the new supporting artist Luke Abbott, who distorts the basics with his own musical textures and patterns to create a vibrant, dancey vision in sound. ESKMO
Jam Fri 19th
On the back of his (fan-freakin’-tastic) debut release for Ninja Tune, Eskmo is hitting Brighton for the first time. The San Francisco resident has spent the past 10 years going from straight-ish dance music to weirdo electronica labels Warp and Planet Mu, and has now arrived on Ninja with tunes that sounds like the most sublime elements of French synth being pummelled by the toughest glitchhop Flying Lotus wishes he could have made. A rare live set, with 24-carat production, and MSG-grade addictiveness, it’s a treat of an evening all round. (MB)

The legendarily hang-dog frontman of The Specials brings his battered record box to the seafront for an evening of original ska, reggae, blue beat and dub. We’ve seen his son and absolute doppelganger Felix do a similar thing at the Specials’ anniversary shows last year, now it’s dad’s turn to dust off his loafers and air the tunes that inspired him and an entire generation to do rocksteady. Expect a full house of creaky-kneed old skinheads letting their braces down. (NC)

Audio Fri 26th
When we ran into JFB the other night he had some sad news for us. This will be the last Battlejam performed in front of a full club audience. From now on, when he gets together with Beardyman to make their live, on-the-fly hip hop (etc) it will be streamed over the internet. Why, you might be asking? Well, they became frustrated with the intricacies of the music being lost in the party atmosphere. Fair play – it’s always been an uneasy balance for gig and club night, sending it towards the former seems pretty sensible. They’ll be headlining festivals soon anyway. (JK)

AkaAkaRoar have been blazing the strand of dubstep that doesn’t involve scally teens in 59Fifty caps. They cast their net much wider than your straight dubstep sound, tonight’s case in point being Ikonika, whose releases have spanned labels like Hyperdub, Warp and Planet Mu. Also on the bill is Joker/Gemmy ally Guido, plus up-and-comer XXXY. As a chunk of bonus love from AkaAkaRoar, £10 will get you one of their lush t-shirts and a mix CD, plus queuejump and cheap entry on the night – all from 412 in the South Lanes. (MB)
HED KANDI
The Honey Sat 27th
As well as their trademark sexy house music on the main floor, Hed Kandi will be blasting out the very now sound of nu disco in the second room of The Honey this month. A natural evolution from the drab remnants of disco, think the glitz’n’glam of New York nightspots versus the minimalist house remixes of A-Trak and the electronic-pop of artists like Glass Candy as championed by overzealous bloggers everywhere. So it’s out with tacky mirror-balls and in with laser beams as Hed Kandi head back to the future. (LS)

Mumdance
global, grime, techno, festivals & remixes: jack is master of all trades Words and photo by james kendall with extra special thanks to the green door store www.thegreendoorstore.co.uk
Jack ‘Mumdance’ Adams is a careers advisor’s wet dream – he’s spent the last few years making opportunities for himself and knocking every one of them out the park. As soon as he passed his driving test he started ferrying Evil Nine to their gigs and now, less than a decade later, he’s a major player on the global electro scene, recording for Diplo’s legendary Mad Decent imprint, as well as the heavyweight Trouble & Bass, and serious grime label No Hats No Hoods. Despite many records coming out with his name over them, ‘The Mum Decent EP’ is his first solo outing, and it’s a cracker. Lead track ‘Don’t Forget Me Now’ features Esser on gentle vocals, and is a perfect mix of rough skippy afro beats, electro synths and a great pop hook. You might think that the indie popster must have
Page 30
taken care of the song while Mumdance banged out the drums, but after years of collaborations Jack doesn’t work like that. “Esser came round my house and then we just sat there,” Jack recalls. “We were trying stuff for ages, and then we just went out the pub. Half the battle with working with someone in the studio is building a rapport, as soon as you’re mates, it’s easy to work together. When we came back Esser played out the riff while he was chatting to me, I did the drums and came up with the chanting hook and the lyrics. Esser had to re-write them though because I’d just split up with someone and they were a bit emo. He made them a bit less cut-your-wrist-y.” Making music without clear-cut roles and marked out boundaries is an indication of Jack’s lack of ego. He’s serious about what he
www.brightonsource.co.uk/CLUBS
“I’d never had to deal with backlines and sound checks and massive egos. It was an eye-opener, but now I’m not phased by anything, ‘cos that’s the one time I thought, ‘I can’t do this’.” So when Vice put out a Black Lips record and one of the photographers suggested a bootleg with Jammer, it wasn’t a massive surprise to find Jack stepping up to the plate. He popped round Jammer’s house, recorded some vocals and spent three quarters of an hour putting it together. He sent it to Diplo, Annie Mac and Sinden via MySpace and within a week all three had got back to him – the former blogging it and the other two playing on their Radio 1 and Kiss shows. Diplo then grabbed him to remix ‘Creator’ for Santogold’s ‘Top Ranking’ mixtape. To say it was a baptism of fire is severely understating things. From there the remix work flooded in. “I got bombarded with remix requests and I did, like, twelve or something like that,” he says. “But it took me quite a long time to do them ‘cos I was still learning how to make music. I was put in quite a really highpressured situation and it took me a while to follow through. This has been the first time where I’m comfortable with releasing my own stuff.” From grime, to techno, through electro and mixes of post-hardcore rock bands Mumdance tracks cover a serious amount of ground. What does Jack think holds the work together? What makes a Mumdance record a Mumdance record? “It’s more like the idea behind it,” he ponders. “I try and blend cultures together. Actually that’s a bit overly analytical, but I think it’s just the case that I like a lot of different types of music. I think its boring to listen to one type of music all night, and that’s how I felt when I was growing up going to drum’n’bass nights, hearing the same tunes five times in an evening. I thought it’d be nice to mix things up.”
FYI
Jack’s open attitude is perfectly summed up by his trip to Mexico City to collaborate with fellow Mad Decent artist Toy Selectah. They took the local triplet-based drums of the emerging tribal guarachero scene and mixed them with our own UK funky, switching rhythms every eight bars. “It was blending two cultures together as well as blending the two sounds, and that’s always the idea,” he explains. “It’s nice to mix genres and music comes from culture anyway. That’s going deep into it, but it’s also about what sounds good at the same time. There’s a whole global music scene now – labels like Mad Decent and Man Recordings – but I like to do it with a UK twist to it ‘cos that’s where I’m from. It’s nice to represent.”

does but excited by what other people can bring to the table. It’s a positive outlook that has paid dividends, with collaborations with Brodinski, AC Slater, High Rankin and, most pivotally, grime MC Jammer. After a stint working on drum’n’bass nights for Don’t Panic’s Rob Gray and Digital boss Dave Stone (who still speaks highly of him), Jack did some university work experience for Vice magazine, who were impressed enough to keep him on to look after their events. This led to him organising the excellent Tales Of The Jackalope festival, featuring Klaxons, 2manyDJs and an early, frightening appearance by The Horrors. It was a massive achievement, especially as he was just 22 years old at the time. “Before I’d only had to deal with DJs turning up late,” he says.
www.brightonsource.co.uk/CLUBS
From the brutal tech-grime of ‘Sacrifice’ on ‘The Mum Decent EP’ the next place Jack is heading is right back to the heart of east London with Trim and Jammer, before melting that sound into acid for a track that’s like a UK take on ‘Higher State Of Consciousness’. There really is nothing that Jack can’t take on and master. The boy’s really going global.

THEATRE: DRACULA Latest MusicBar until Weds 3rd
Taking their first foray in horror theatre, the inimitably brilliant Otherplace Productions go gothic in a Halloween retelling of the infamous Bram Stoker story, taking an ensemble cast, live music and a specially installed set design to the Latest for four days. You know the score – bloodthirsty madmen and psychopaths in an asylum, seduction, murder, life, death and moody spirits…it’s your usual witching hour off St James’s Street, just without the risk of getting moved along for gawping at it. FILM: THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT Duke of York’s until Thurs 4th
Acclaimed director Lisa Cholodenko’s third film is a no-holds-barred, critically applauded, thoughtful and explosive portrayal of same-sex marriage and family ties, channelled through forcing the viewer to side with complex characters collectively in thrall to their seedy mores. The sexual tension between Jules (Julianne Moore) and the biological father of the children she brings up with her lesbian lover knocks anything Oceana can muster at closing time into a simmering cesspit before descending, inevitably, into the dirty deed and complicated consequences. THEATRE: THE ILIAD AND THE ODYSSEY Three and Ten Tues 9th - Sat 13th and Tues 16th - Weds 17th
Two of the best recent Fringe shows for the latter part of the month, starting with The Iliad, an epic tale of
Page 32
war and consequences from physical theatre company Drunken Masks. Theatre Ad Infinitum’s Odyssey turns up the following week, reinventing the Greek myth in a show which won The Stage’s Best Solo Performer nod for star George Mann and a Best Of The Fringe award from The Observer, no less. (BM)
COMEDY: THE FUNNIER FARM Caroline of Brunswick Weds 10th and 24th
The comedy fixture from Hove’s departed Farm Tavern arrives at everyone’s favourite goth hangout with a couple of cheap-as-chips chuckle sessions this month, starting with Dave Gorman accomplice Danielle Ward and Hackney Empire New Act finalist Pat Burtscher on a five-act line-up. Beardy deadpan cynic and surrealist Joe Wilkinson headlines the second one alongside confessional outbursts from Meryl O’Rourke and at least five other performers, including sketches and songs from duo Horse & Louis. (BM)
EXHIBITION: HARRY WATTS Temple Bar until Sun 14th
Brighton-based photographer Harry Watts has had a busy few months, being involved with printing and planning at the Brighton Photo Biennial, exhibiting in the Brighton Photo Fringe, and releasing his own project, Finds. His gritty, stark images show objects found on Brighton streets from scattered berries to discarded clothes, and have been reproduced in newspaper format and distributed across the city as an interactive display for others to find and document themselves. Cool and reflective, this exhibition celebrates that which most would ignore. (JMM)
DANCE: UNDER GLASS Basement Fri 19th – Sat 20th
Plummeting temperatures seem to spark The Basement’s prolific programme, with everything from cosmic Edwardians to film noir short stories in the hidden bunker this month. Under Glass was commissioned by Sadler’s Wells as a series of cabaret performance pieces setting seven dancers, artists and actors in made-to-measure glass cabinets or jars. They use their claustrophobic restrictions to explore the concept of mortal limitations with original musical scores and “movement language” in a project which won the Total Theatre Award last year. DANCE: BREAKIN’ CONVENTION Dome Fri 19th – Sat 20th
Much more than a mere display of flailing limbs and hip hop beats, this 10th outing for the crew promises to fill the Dome’s foyers with pre-show and interval activities. Open dance floors, have-a-go workshops for those more supple of limb than us, graffiti art and loads more all conspire to complement the main room performances, which based on the promo film we saw are a mix of standard b-boys spinning on lino and altogether more costumed and choreographed affairs. Whatever your particular breakin’ proclivity, there’s something to love here. (NC)
FESTIVAL: STORYVILLE
Pavilion Theatre Fri 19th – Sun 21st An international roster of female writers takes to the Dome for one weekend only, in the inaugural edition of this literature festival. Lionel Shriver discusses her scathing dissection of American healthcare, Bonnie Greer talks about Obama’s “southside” upbringing, multi award-winner Ali Smith has a chat about her new work and gothic wordsmith Louise Welsh pitches in among an impressive, ambitious line-up which also finds space for New Voices, allowing audiences to listen to up-and-coming talents introducing their ethos. ART: MADE
Corn Exchange Fri 19th – Sun 21st You’ll probably see the quirky, Elle-endorsed posters for the design and textile wing of the Brighton Art Fair popping up omnipotently this month, illustrating the funky feel of a show which is traditionally choc-a-block with horned clay sculptures, chains of swirling, kaleidoscopic plates and weird ceramic installation hybrids. MADE has prided itself on being accessible and affordable since launching in 2004, and last month its success saw it branch out to London for a similar adventure in the salubrious surroundings of Fulham Palace. (BM)
ART: ART JUNKY Phoenix Sun 21st
Most Phoenix one-offs are designed to raise eyebrows, and the winter “bizarre bazaar” is no exception. While there are original works up for grabs at a snip, many of the pieces are cast-offs or former firmaments of inspiration for the artists shipping them out, which leads to an absurdist feel and flea market atmosphere. A café, bar, live DJs, face-painting, giveaways and an auction are also on the cards at the indoor market with a difference. (BM)
THEATRE: MACBETH Pavilion Theatre Thurs 25th-Sat 27th
A colourful twist on Shakespeare’s tragedy from awardwinning collective (try saying this one after a few gins) Teatr Pieśń Kozła, who imbue the piece with physicality and song in a style heavily influenced by its conceptual origins at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Complete Works season three years ago. Founded 14 years ago and working out of a 14th century monastery in their native Poland, this is the avant-garde group’s first full UK tour and follows award-winning runs at Edinburgh in 2004 and 2006. ART
DAN BALDWIN Ink_d until Sun 21st
WORDS BY NICK COQUET
In their second exhibition with the artist, Ink_d are showcasing Dan Baldwin’s first collection solely devoted to works on paper. Created due to a recession-friendly demand for affordable pieces that fall between limited edition prints and canvases, the process has afforded the artist an unexpected freedom to create some surprising results. Themes like
Page 34
war, politics, nature, innocence, religion and decay are all represented, and their realisation in this new medium is free of the shackles of expectation working with traditional canvas can bring. It’s not that the paper itself is anything approaching disposable – it’s handmade, heavyweight Italian stock to allow for the weight of Baldwin’s layering technique, but the freedom of expression it’s encouraged is a revelation. We were transfixed by his broad brush strokes and sinister themes, and we’re not alone – he’s revered by celebrities and the art-savvy alike. Exhibitions alongside Banksy, Peter Blake and Damian Hirst have all helped Baldwin to his current mantle of artist du jour.

CINECITY
BRIGHTON’S FILM FESTIVAL OF ODEON AVOIDANCE WORDS BY NICK COQUET
somewhere
In an age of lazy, big-budget remakes and bankable brand franchises, it’s perhaps easy to forget the potential of the silver screen to enthral and engage as well as just entertain us with dumb explosions. Cinecity returns to the Duke of York’s from Thursday 19th for an 18-day programme featuring the best in contemporary international cinema as well as an all-encompassing agenda of installations, retrospectives, education events, talks and debates. Highlights from the schedule are many – here’s some that are worth turning your mobile off for.
THE KING’S SPEECH
Opening the festival this year is the hotly-tipped Tom Hooper tale of King George VI, father of the current monarch Elizabeth II. A reluctant heir to the throne after the abdication of his brother, he stammered dreadfully and was generally thought unfit to assume the mantle of sovereignty. Until, that is, he enlisted the assistance of an unlikely friend and ally in speech therapist Lionel Logue. Starring Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter and Guy Pearce, it’s a hit in waiting.
SOMEWHERE
Sophia Coppola’s new film, following The Virgin Suicides and Lost In Translation, has plenty to live up to. Thankfully, The Golden Lion top prize at the Venice Film Festival, the first awarded to an American female director, suggests her trajectory is on the right track with Somewhere. Thought to contain reflections on her relationship with her own father Francis Ford, the plot sees a Hollywood hellraiser taming his lifestyle after an unexpected visit from his young daughter. Exquisite cinematography and soundtrack are a given in this future classic.
BLUE
Derek Jarman’s cinematic swansong fittingly deals with his experience of AIDS in a crowded collage of commentary, together with ruminations on the titular hue, which forms the visual element to the film as a constant, static, screen-filling
Page 36
presence. The original 1993 print was promised never to be remastered or restored, giving the film itself an element of gradual decay with each successive screening. Tonight sees Jarman’s friend and composer Simon Fisher Turner providing a live remix to the soundtrack.
THERAPIST
Barry Adamson, onetime bassist for Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds, Magazine and even Visage, went on to create expansive imaginary soundtrack music before being called upon to score parts of Natural Born Killers and The Lost Highway. One suspects this short film has always been an ultimate goal for Adamson, and his directorial debut and accompanying soundtrack are certain to enthral. He’s in conversation after the screening, offering further insights into his work.
DREAMING IN COLOUR
This sub-programme, which includes the Jarman Blue screening, also features a selection of work from the pioneer of ‘direct cinema’ Len Lye, who painted directly onto film stock, and those he’s inspired with similar techniques. The films are accompanied by a major exhibition at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery – Capturing Colour, Film, Innovation and Wonder, beginning on December 4th and featuring analysis from magic lanterns to Kodachrome and a delve into rarely-seen film archives.
THE RIME OF THE MODERN MARINER
The London Docks may now be the setting for red braces banker types, but its history as the largest port on earth is the inspiration for this documentary. The culture, community and folklore are explored as narrator Carl Barat unfurls the centuries-old story, which ended with the port’s closure in the late 60s. A single remaining seaman’s mission provides extraordinary memories, set against an atmospheric score by Klaxons’ Anthony Rossomando featuring samples from the area’s living heyday.

CRITIC
WORDS BY MATT BARKER, NICK COQUET, JAMES KENDALL PHOTO BY ELEONORA D’AMBROSIO
DEMO: ALFONSO MALDINI •
EP: BIRDEATSBABY •
ALBUM: KIT ASHTON •
SINGLE: BURNS & FRED FALKE •
(myspace.com/alfonzomaldini)
The idea of ‘retro’ has always been an awkward one. A band like Alfonso Maldini will no doubt be tagged with a prefix like ‘60s throwback’. Sure all the tropes are there, both lyrically and sonically – one song is about a taxman taking all Charlie’s dough, and leaving him in his stately home, for example. The fact that the reverb-heavy, top-register vocals, Farfisa organ and acoustic, pastoral whimsy harks back to a bygone era shouldn’t stand in the way of what are most excellent Brit-beat ditties. (MB)
Reveal Or Steal (myspace.com/kitashton)
A singer songwriter whose ranks expand for live shows, Kit selfdescribes as a ‘semi-glam proud pop fan’ He certainly has a canny ear for a pleasing refrain that’s unafraid to venture into comic darkness (‘I Killed My Twin’ for example) and isn’t shy about tinges of folk pushing to the surface. But the glam claim rang very true with us, especially faced with the We Could Be Bowie tribute night he put on last month – lots of this has a ‘Ziggy Stardust’/’Hunky Dory’ vibe about it that chimes in very pleasantly. (NC)
ALBUM: ALPHABET’S HEAVEN • Jay’s Odyssey (Peppermill)
Experimental beats and loops are the dish of the day in Alphabet’s Heaven, served with a psychedelic soufflé infused with funky flavours and a soulful sonic sauce. An atmospheric soundscape underpinned by synths and drum machines, the album actually creates a narrative which admittedly requires some prior explanation – it’s inspired by a blue jay who goes to space to find a new garden or something. But overall it’s a very decent offering, a tricksy and novel alternative for lovers of beats and hip hop. (NC)
Page 38
Bigger Teeth (myspace.com/birdeatsbaby)
Self-confessed avoiders of musical trends that come in and out with the tides, the ‘Birds instead take a decidedly theatrical route, with lush string orchestration forming the painted scenery backdrop to the performance pieces that make up this EP. Production by Eighties Matchbox’s Mark R Norris lends the set an inherent darkness – eerily effective as it deliciously taints the initially apparent sweetness of the songs. We haven’t seen them live but we can imagine the gigs being a blast. (NC)
YSLM (You Stopped Loving Me) (Deconstruction) Burns has been threatening to bust through into the mainstream for a while now, and this collaborative effort with in-vogue French soft-synth wizard Fred Falke could just be his ticket to commercial ubiquity. An almost Eric Prydz kick-hi-hat pattern and the disco-tastic repetition of the Luther Vandross vocal refrain screams party anthem and begs for a video with leggy blondes in leotards, (not that the Pug-tastic actual video is a bad thing). Remixes by Linus Loves, Treasure Fingers, Rynecoligist and Burns himself match the original’s pop potential with some credible floor-filling. It’s a hit. (NC)
DEMO: THE CREAKING CHAIR • (myspace.com/thecreakingchair)
It might have been down to the Mulligan & O’Hare skits on old Reeves & Mortimer shows, but reading ‘folk’ in a band‘s description always used to make us think of the hey nonny nonny Fairisle jumper, real ale scene. Nowadays, thankfully, the term has reinvented itself into something altogether more
www.brightonsource.co.uk/REVIEWS
credible, and The Creaking Chair are more than decent exponents of this redefined genre. Pastoral acoustics with thoughtful vocals are peppered with the occasional jaunty moment for just the right amount of light and shade. It’s an accomplished effort all round, with plenty of promise. (NC)
EP: THE ELEVEN 37S •
Here Comes The Storm (myspace.com/theeleven37s) We’re assuming that one of the band’s number is a printer/ designer, as the amount of matt UV, high-GSM printed card inserts that came with this CD would have bankrupted Bon Jovi. But at the end of the day it’s about the tunes on the CD, and these firmly inhabit the funk rock side of town. It’s well played, produced and recorded, and the band are clearly devotees of the Chili Peppers – if we’re being picky the emphasis on virtuoso playing can cast a slightly clinical shadow over the soul of the songs, but overall it’s a good collection. (NC)
ALBUM: FROM PLAN TO PROGRESS • Ink Stains & Incidents (Fond Of Life)
The skatepunk and melodic hardcore scene seems to have tailed off a little over the last few years – we can’t remember the last example we received. Perhaps the bands have gone into some kind of evolutionary gestation if this one is anything to go by. FPTP’s second album represents a newfound maturity, egged on by the addition of a second guitarist, which sees them focusing on energetic technical intricacy while showing a definite development in chorus development and overall pulling power. Frantic and frenetic. (NC)
SINGLE: THE GAA GAA’S •
Voltaire (The Playground)
A band for whom the study and judicious appropriation of 80s goth music’s finest moments does them immense credit – plenty get ticks on the genre’s nuance checklist but few are able to carry it off with such contemporary style. The Gaa Gaa’s have been on SOURCE’s radar since their very early ragged-yet-infectious demos, and this progression in sound and style is both encouraging for the band’s potential and our own ability to spot ‘em early. An electro remix by Punk Soundcheck backs up the original version, which is also very decent indeed. (NC)
MINI LP: LOSTAURA • The Hiding Place (The Animal Farm)
Swathes of reverb-heavy guitars march alongside lilting piano and pounding backbeats on this powerful and dynamic sixtracker. Epic-sounding songs are given the space to breathe in an expansive production that manages to straddle an underlying alt.rock darkness and an undeniable commercial tendency. Band CVs littered with impressive instrumental Grade 8s come as no surprise – the performances have a vibe about them that never comes over as show-offy, just a band poised for greatness. (NC)
EP: LYREBIRDS • Blondehead (Lotus Records)
After not one but two Steven Street-produced releases on the über-selective Chess Club imprint, on their ‘Blondehead EP’,
www.brightonsource.co.uk/REVIEWS
Lyrebirds’ instead opted to bring the tracks together at their own pace. Unexpectedly, the resultant sound has been wound back from the ultra-widescreen indie stadium-gloom of their previous two singles, and has instead moved into (somewhat) more upbeat and janglier territory – what you might expect a collaboration between The Jesus and Mary Chain and Interpol to sound like. This added melodic infusion pitches their upward trajectory still further. (MB)
ZINE: KATE MCMORRINE • Grin (www.katemcmorrine.com)
When one of this new-to-Brighton screenprinter’s friends complained that all her Lump zines were a bit bleak, she made him this micro-book consisting only of drawings of people smiling. But behind all the beaming lies some very dark tales: the boy who knows he’ll be bullied forever, the dancer who knows she’ll never be picked, the ornamental dog that won’t run with the wolves. Though it’s only 10 A6 pages long, Grin is a beautiful artefact whose art matches the story behind it – beautiful but warped and rather arresting. (JK)
SINGLE: MIRRORS • Hide & Seek (Skint)
It’s amazing news that Mirrors are supporting their spiritual fathers OMD on a European tour right now – slightly disappointing that they’re not doing the UK, as we’d have loved to have seen them at the Dome. ‘Hide & Seek’ puts the pop into synth pop, a jaunty but melancholic number that holds back the dancier production they’ve been favouring lately. ‘Toe The Line’ is brand new, coming on like proto-house music until the melodramatic vocal arrives and things go electro-power ballad. Pure class. (JK)
EP: MUNICH •
(myspace.com/thisismunich)
Where Are You Now
With a name suggesting, to this throwback at least, an early 80s indie-tinged tower of sound, Munich certainly don’t mislead. With arenas-in-waiting swirls of guitar, bathed in levels of reverb that would make The Edge say “that’s a lot of reverb there, lads’, the songs pack an immense emotional punch. Even ballad ‘Where Are You Now’ racks up the atmospherics, but elsewhere it’s the bait of the plugs’n’pedals work along various fret boards that reels the listener in, matching a colossal size of sound with memorable hooks – what more could you ask for? (NC)
ALBUM: VILLAREAL • Lit By Sparks (Numbskull HQ)
While the full-scale release of the album isn’t until April 2011, 50 early adopter punters can get their hands on this at The Albert on December 10th when the band play an LP launch show. And we kind of advise you do – the album is definitely one to get hold of at your earliest convenience. It’s very accomplished guitar indie pop that possibly recalls some of Badly Drawn Boy’s better moments, bits of Teenage Fanclub and a generally soaring, shimmering set of song gems. Often we play albums to review then put them aside – not this one, it’s a keeper. (NC)
ALBUM: VARIOUS
White Mink Black Cotton (Freshly Squeezed •) Cannily carving themselves a niche as purveyors of zeitgeist-y retro sounds, local label Freshly Squeezed return with a second instalment of contemporary nu-swing, plus a glut of its antecedents. Spread over two CDs, the unimpeachably brilliant likes of the Andrews Sisters and Tommy Dorsey nuzzle the rather more love-itor-loathe-it modern variants, complete with ‘electro’-beats, a la the Correspondents. healing’ I’d read about, where you stay at home and the practitioner does their thing from afar, apparently using specialised symbols of some kind. But I was determined to give scepticism a swerve for the time being – if I was going to convince myself it was hokum before I even began, it was unlikely to work really, wasn’t it?
REIKI SOURCE VIRGINS
WORDS BY NICK COQUET, ILLUSTRATION BY FOX FISHER
THE CONCEPT
Simple, we do stuff we haven’t done before and tell you about it in case you haven’t either. Nick Coquet is perhaps not the most spiritual of people, and laughs in the face of most moon-man philosophies concerning potential paths to enlightenment. Reiki would appear to be one such practice – the transference of positive energy through the hands of its practitioner? Really?
THE REASONS
THE EXPERIENCE
I read up on it a bit. I’d imagined it was a Japanese tradition handed down through the generations over thousands of years, but it seems it was developed less than 100 years ago. That’s fine, so was Viagra and that works, apparently. I’m not ageist when it comes to mind mending. I remembered I’d seen various cards and flyers for this sort of thing in Neal’s Yard in the North Laine, so I went and picked a couple up. Sarah Keays is a qualified homeopath and Reiki practitioner operating at Seven Dials. I made my appointment.
www.brightonsource.co.uk/FEATURES
Sarah began at my head, placing her hands on me and seemingly summoning energy from some external source. Her hands moved down – neck, chest, stomach, hips. I think it’s something to do with focusing energy on my chakras or something, but I decided I didn’t really need to shine light in on magic – there was also the possibility that the more of that moon-man talk I heard the less I’d be susceptible to the Reiki at all. She certainly seemed to be concentrating on something, possibly harnessing something from somewhere. I managed to negotiate the chakra around my hips without embarrassing myself – hey, Sarah’s an attractive gal. But it wasn’t playing on my mind, I was trying to keep that empty of thoughts and worries so that it might become a vessel for some new and enlightened outlook on life.
“I felt like I had a glow about me, as if I’d had my soul massaged or something”
SOURCE is only part of what I do for work. I produce and present a radio show and I design and maintain websites – all working from home and all requiring something of a self-starter attitude. Not putting things off. Not watching Cash In The Attic. My failure in this has been constant and epic. Inherent laziness is not something a GP can prescribe for, there isn’t really a pill for pep and vim and vigour. But apparently Reiki could help, a form of complementary and alternative medicine. Where’s the harm in trying?
Reiki can be done in two ways; hands on and hands off. Mine was to be performed with a hands-on approach, as this is the way Sarah was taught. Good. Cynical as I am, it seemed the more plausible method of getting some honest-to-goodness vibes inside of me. Hovering hands seemed an unlikely conduit for conversion. As, I have to say, did the ‘distant
I turned up for my appointment. Sarah was welcoming and at once calming to be in the presence of. The room was warm and comfortable, the music soft and tranquil. I didn’t have to to strip bare or anything, I just removed my shoes and lay on the comfy masseuse table thing. I’d explained what I was looking for help with, the whole work mojo thing. Homeopathy, with its mysterious little white pills, would apparently be an option – a kind of spritual sister to Reiki. They’re both holistic gigs working on mental, emotional and spiritual levels, but I was pretty much preoccupied with the laying on of hands concept.
After what felt like not very long at all but actually timed in at around 55 minutes I think, I was all done. It was certainly a very relaxing experience, but like I said, I’m kind of lazy – I’m good at lying down doing nothing. I drank some water; somehow just lying there had dehydrated me more than would seem normal. I didn’t want to ask when it would all kick in – I didn’t think I felt any different. But when I got up to put my shoes on I actually almost keeled over. Again, a bit odd.
On the way back, it was hard to know what to expect in terms of some revelation of spiritual enlightenment. There certainly wasn’t any specific eureka moment, but I have to say I felt pretty good as I drove home to my groaning in-tray.
WAS IT WORTH IT?
Well, the strange thing is, the next day I kind of couldn’t wait to get cracking. A full inbox, usually a thing of dread despite its billpaying workload, was zipped through, and my work to-do list gave me a sense of purpose and worth. I got a real kick out of ticking each one off and actually did some pro-active stuff, you know – things people weren’t actually screaming for yet. Aside from work, I felt like I had a glow about me, as if I’d had my soul massaged or something.
With traditional medicine, you can see it working. There are tangible results. Your broken leg heals, your rash goes away. Less specific and symptom-free ailments are obviously trickier to measure, but for days after Sarah did her thing, I really felt ace. It’s been a bit odd recounting the episode to people, what with my hearty suspicion of Reiki by Sarah Keays this sort of thing, but it worked. Reiki Tel 01273 884478 worked. There, I said it. email sarahkeays@gmail.com

STREET STYLE PHOTOS BY KEVIN MEREDITH AT LOMOKEV.COM WORDS BY NICK COQUET
Jamie caught our eye this month with his striking look, combining retro chic elements to create a contemporary style of his own. Mining the past for fashion inspiration is nothing new of course, but you don’t want to end up looking like a museum piece. Jamie’s judicious appropriation of cross-gender branding across new and old outfit components, together with a cavalier approach to manufacturers’ recommended measurements, really ticked our boxes. He talked us through his clobber. Jacket from Oxfam “I love tweed and I love the way this fits. It was only £7. I got the badges free from Resident.” Scarf from To Be Worn Again “It’s a paisley scarf that just goes with the rest of the outfit.” Jumper and vest from H&M “It’s a v-neck over a long white vest, because the jumper doesn’t really fit.” Jeans from Top Shop “They’re female jeans, yes. Because I’m so tall I buy them for the fit. If the cut’s nice it’s not a problem if they’re a bit short. A bit like the jacket sleeves.” Shoes from Next “Yes, they look like moccasins but they’re actually really broken brogues – I’ve worn them everywhere, all over Scandinavia, and they’re really broken. No, no socks. I hate them, they don’t feel good.” Hair by Rush I suppose it’s kind of a Keith Richards look, a kind of female style really. Bracelets from festivals 2008-10 I just never took them off. They get really battered after a while, they look really cool.
Jamie received a bottle of Tuaca for his eye-catching look, Tuaca being the perfect stylish drink, bringing out the subtle tones of vanilla and citrus when served long over ice with cola.

UNSUNG HEROES
100 PEOPLE WHO MAKE BRIGHTON WHAT IT IS NO.15 DANIEL NATHAN
WORDS and photo BY JAMES KENDALL
Not many cities are lucky enough to have a radio station as good as Juice, and for that Daniel Nathan deserves a moment in the spotlight. What makes a good local radio station? At Juice 107.2, our strapline is “radio made in Brighton”, and we aim to be inclusive, open-minded, irreverent and accessible. It’s about connecting with your audience, which means more than just reading out details of local events on-air. You’ve got to be there too. You’ve done loads of interesting things – what did you do before owning Juice? I started out in pirate radio, then I was involved in the lobby to open up community radio. In the early 90s I pioneered the first legal UK station to play ‘alternative’ music with Festival Radio in Brighton and London. I helped launch Kiss 100 in London and co-founded Kiss in Manchester and across Yorkshire and also Surf 107 in Brighton (now Juice 107.2). In 2000, I started totallyradio.com – groundbreaking internet radio, playing music beyond the mainstream. What was the score with you selling Juice/Surf and buying it back? At the turn of the millennium a lot of media companies were being bought and sold at ridiculous prices and the shareholders in the business were made an offer they simply couldn’t refuse. A couple of years later, the large firm that bought the radio station trashed it, and then sold it back shortly before going under. You’re involved in Radio Reverb too – is that competition for Juice? Having championed community radio for years, I believe it fulfils a need for grass roots community initiative, although of course it competes for the same listeners’ ears. When both radio stations live and breathe a place as unique as Brighton, it would also be crazy not to find some ways to work together. Brighton Live is a good example, including Reverb, Juice and even BBC Sussex. Juice seems kinda like two radio stations – daytime and evening. How do you join them together? The simple answer is ratings by day and reputation by night. The key time for radio is between 7am and 7pm – television tends to take over from early evening. It’s at these times that we aim to do something more cutting edge. What we do ‘after hours’ marks us out on the dial and reinforces Juice’s reputation as being ‘made in Brighton.’
Page 46
full of Chinese people – at lunch is a very good sign but we’re here for something special we saw one night when we picked up a standard takeaway. THE MEAL: The menu is full of the usual stuff you’d expect but we shun it for what we found out is called the hot pot buffet. We settle in excitedly and a hotplate is brought out. Once that is warmed up a massive vat of soup is delivered to the table followed by two trays of raw ingredients. The idea is the soup boils, you add in beef, prawns, tofu, potato, crab sticks, squid, mushrooms and more, and watch it cook before fishing it out and ramming it down your throat. Repeat as many times as you like cos it’s ‘all you can eat’ (and drink) for £20 each. The whole thing is a great deal of fun, and everything cooks in an instant. One half of the soup has about 50 chillies in it – quite a kick for the average western palate – while the other is soothing chicken-esque broth. The best bet is to dive between the two, cooking as you go.

THE PLACE: Admittedly Sunny doesn’t look like much, but in our minds all the best places to eat concentrate on ingredients rather than furniture (naïve, we know). Being as busy as this – and
THE VERDICT: It’s not often you can say that you’ve eaten a meal that’s nothing like anything you’ve eaten before but that’s exactly what happened at Sunny. Although essentially soup, the experience of cooking the raw ingredients made it so much more interesting. The idea that you’re controlling your meal turned out to be kind of the opposite – it was more of an adventure into the unknown, especially when you start cooking Spam in soup. And all you can eat for £20 – well, you can’t ague with that when it’s all fresh. We’ll be back one evening when we can really take our time. WERE WE SUSSED? No – you’d be slightly odd not to want to take a photo of this meal. No suspicion aroused at all.
IN CONVERSATION WITH
DUKE OF YORK’S CINEMA WORDS BY NICK COQUET
A true Brighton landmark with national recognition, The Duke Of York’s is the best place in town to experience cinema. We spoke to manager Jon Barrenechea on the eve of the Duke marching to the top of the cinema hill with Cinecity. This is Cinecity’s seventh year… Yes, it’s basically Brighton’s own film festival – the main city arts festival and Fringe only feature film as a small, outside part of their programme, so this is a great chance for Brighton movie-goers to get together and experience some amazing new work. The Duke Of York’s is famously the oldest cinema in Britain. The secret of its longevity has basically been being able to adapt to the changes that have faced cinema overall. In the 50s cinemas were the only place people could kind of get together and be alone, but gradually town centres became decimated – people started buying their own homes in the suburbs and staying in them; entertainment became more home-based. Back then there were thousands of single-screen cinemas, but by the 80s the ones that were left were mostly fleapits in serious decline, until the advent of the multiplex in 1985. Art-house cinemas attracted a different customer – we’d been playing cult films since the 60s to an audience who appreciated the whole cinema experience a bit more.
You do show more mainstream films as well as the arthouse titles, presumably an economical decision to subsidise smaller screenings. We show about nine big mainstream films a year – Inception, for example, everyone wanted to see and we had that. We want to be known as the best cinema in Brighton, not just the best – well, only – arthouse cinema. At the Duke you know you’re not going to be surrounding by teenagers shouting and chucking popcorn, watching a torn 35mm screen where people have thrown bottles at it, you’re going to be watching a digital print in comfort. But the bigger movies take a bigger cut – it’s like if you book the Rolling Stones; you know they’re going to take pretty much all the money and you’re relying on beer sales. With smaller films the distribution is more reasonable but of course the audience is smaller. The secret is to sell out the smaller films… The digital projector must make it easier to get prints, presumably you can just play DVDs. Well yes you can, but ideally only in cases where you can’t find anything better. DVDs are often remastered from film, you can still see the scratches. But with films like Back To The Future for example recently, Universal remastered it from the negative, which was intact, and they released 100 digital prints across the country. Plenty of films are remastered for cinema, The Godfather’s another recent one.
Home video must have played a part in that decline, and now we have the threat of Tel: 0871 902 5728 torrents. WEB: www.tinyurl.com/brightonduke It was a part of it then, It must be fun picking films for the Jon’s film blog: www.splendorcinema.blogspot.com yes, but in general late night screenings. people just didn’t want to Things like Withnail & I and The Wizard go to the cinema Of Oz are fun, yes – you know you’re anymore. Nowadays our audience isn’t the sort of person who going to get an audience. Increasingly we’re using social wants to see the new Ashton Kutcher film on a download. People networking – we weren’t going to show The Human Centipede do share the more arthouse films online but nowhere near as much. recently for example, but there was a Facebook group with I think our audience just appreciates the whole social aspect of 1,000 people asking for it. At the moment there’s a campaign cinema – where you can take a beer in and buy some homemade to get Jurassic Park shown – curiously as it’s very mainstream, cake. but the people seem to want it, so we’re happy to oblige.

SIX OF THE BEST
OLD SCHOOL GOTH WORDS BY NICK COQUET
If there was ever a music movement that was so definitely of its time, so unlikely to ever enjoy any kind of commercial or even underground resurgence, it’s goth. Yet wandering town after nightfall is a new generation of Horrors-fixated youth, skulking about beneath implausibly elevated hair through a mess of black eyeliner, and Brighton bands like The Gaa Gaa’s and Pink Narcissus continue to fly the flag. For those who still live the original dream and don’t venture outside during daylight hours, it’s a different world out there – these six essential albums from the first wave of goth are now available on something new and mysterious called ‘CD’.
BAUHAUS ‘Mask’
Unashamedly gloomy; the Bauhaus cheekbones cast doubt that a single square meal had ever passed a member’s lips. On ‘Mask’, their second album, they added some surprising elements to the mix that saw standout tracks like ‘Kick In The Eye 2’ and ‘Dancing’ verge on funk rhythms, only to be dragged back down to earth (and then a good six feet under) for ‘Hollow Hills’ and ‘Of Lillies And Remains’. Bauhaus would go on to achieve unlikely mainstream prominence with their souped-up covers of ‘Telegram Sam’ and ‘Ziggy Stardust’, but this, the sound of disaffected and depressed Northampton, would remain unsurpassed by them or any other.
THE SISTERS OF MERCY ‘First And Last And Always’
By the time these Leeds legends got around to releasing their first album proper, they were already longstanding stalwarts of the scene via a series of indispensable EPs like ‘Alice’ and ‘Temple Of Love’. Theirs was the archetypal style to which all latecomers would aspire – their inherent darkness completely off the Dulux colour chart. From the intense gloom-laden strains of ‘Black Planet’ to the final dying embers of ‘Some Kind Of Stranger’, this was the sound of goth at the peak of its powers. The more commercial follow-up, ‘Floodland’, saw them grace Top Of The Pops, their new overground status leaving their original fanbase blinking painfully in the light.
Alien Sex Fiend
‘Who’s Been Sleeping In My Brain?’ Apt to performing in a t-shirt proclaiming ‘I’M A FUCKING MANIAC’, Nik Fiend was the demented Dickensian rag-bag frontman of Alien Sex Fiend, backed by his wife Mrs Fiend and the probably-not-Christened-that-way Yaxi Highriser and Johnnie Ha-Ha. cranked-up, drum machine-backed rock’n’roll. Live, they were a fearsome proposition in the days of Ha-Ha’s percussive duel with the rockbox, and on record they came across like a black whirlwind of sound. More slasher horror than gothic in the Mary Shelley sense of the word, they provided some relatively light relief in the face of their more po-faced counterparts.
The Cure ‘pornography’
After fits and starts around vaguely breezy lo-fi new wave, ‘Pornography’ was a dramatic turning off of the lights, intoning ‘It doesn’t matter if we all die’ as the album’s opening salvo. From this moment the mood actually manages to drop, in a spectacularly miserable outing for Robert Smith and co. But the depth of the mood by no means detracts from the quality of work showcased here. Dark and turgid we can’t forgive, but this has an energetic vitriol to it whose rhythmic anger shapes the bleak themes of songs like ‘The Hanging Garden’ to devastating effect. ‘The Love Cats’ it certainly ain’t.
Fields Of The Nephilim ‘the Nephilim’
At first glance The Neph were blatant Sisters copyists, adding some Sergio Leone desert chic (ie covering themselves with flour to indicate an outlaw life of bakery shoot-outs) to the widebrimmed hat look perfected by Eldritch. But they took a healthy development route from the independent charts into the top 40 proper with the single ‘Moonchild’, included here. The album’s dusty bluster is relentless throughout save for the more melancholic ‘Celebrate’, assuring them of rabid devotion – their seating at goth’s top table would last until the original scene as a whole faded around the turn of the 90s.
The Virgin Prunes ‘Sons Find Devils’
Now here was a band to test the steely reserve of even the most seasoned goth. Their origins were as a group of weirdo Dublin art-schoolers who split into two bands – the Prunes and some rock combo called U2. Taking heavy doses of theatricality with them, Prunes tunes were challenging and ambitious, but this collection contains their most accessible and, at times, brilliant work, in ‘Pagan Love Song’, ‘Caucasian Walk’ and ‘A New Form Of Beauty’. Front man Gavin Friday would eventually tire of his art-shocking and retire gracefully to cabaret-style singing, at which he was surprisingly adept.
