BIRTHDAY WISHES

So, SOURCE has become a teenager; expect us to get stroppy and difficult and JUST HATE EVERYTHING any day now. But before that happens we want to be grateful for a minute. Because there are a lot of people who have got us here. We’d like to thank everyone who’s contributed words, photos and images over the last 13 years (frequently for little or no money), but there’s simply not even close to enough space. We hope that you all know how much we love and value you, especially the current SOURCE team and Talent Pool who are probably the strongest in the magazine’s history. Another group of people that it’s not fashionable to thank, but keep this magazine free for all the readers, is the advertisers. Without you there’d be no SOURCE and every time you choose us to reach your audience we’re hugely grateful (especially if you send your artwork in the right dimensions). And – before we get too emotional – we want to thank the tens of thousands of readers across Brighton every month. The affection that you hold the magazine in is very touching and has kept us going at times when we really should have jacked it in. Right, that’s enough of all that. Now, fuck off and read the magazine, it’s another beauty.

SLIDING AND DINING

Back by popular demand after its successful debut last year, Brighton’s Royal Pavilion Real Ice Rink & Restaurant will have its gates open between November 12th and January 22nd. If the serene skill of ice-skating isn’t for you, the Victorian-themed restaurant will have your mouths watering while the presentation will have your eyes gleaming. More contemporary courses will also be available alongside local Sussex ales, premium lagers and ciders. With charming chesterfields to relax on, waiting to be served is no longer a problem as you watch the kids tumble and fall.

ENABLE THE TURNTABLE

Turntable enthusiasts will already be all about JFB and his UK DMC Championship top placing, but we bring news of accolades from further afield. He recently went up against some serious scratch competition in the DMC World Championships, and came a very impressive fourth. Hats off to Mr B, but as our dad would have said, “You’re going to ruin that bloody needle, son.” See him work his magic at Audio on Friday 18th. JFB, not our dad.

NOT MISERABLE NOW?

Brighton’s legion of Morrissey fanatics: preen your quiffs, don your NHS specs and oscillate wildly down to the Komedia for November Spawned A Mozzer, a double-headed tribute on Friday 18th. The Smiths Indeed will follow a greatest hits set with seminal masterpiece ‘The Queen Is Dead’ in its entirety. Then, lest the existential angst gets too much, the November Spawned a Mozzer girls will draw you into a celebration of all things Moz, with film projections, cakes, bunting, competitions and of course a DJ set devoted to Stephen Patrick.

DIAMOND GEEZERS

MAKE A SWISH

Running low on cash to facilitate your fashion fix even though your wardrobe is bursting? My Swish are holding a clothes swap – or ‘swish’ – at the Freemasons on Western Road on Sunday 27th at 3pm. Whether you’ve got unloved items or you’re just after something new, swishing is a great way to grab vintage pieces that you won’t find anywhere else. Vintage teas from Roses All Over and Cath Kidston goody bags are included in the ticket price of £5 in advance, £6 on the day.

NAN SNAPS

QueenSpark are set to launch a unique photographic collection and book containing a ‘People’s History’ of Brighton. The images were collected from locals through volunteer-led events and you can still submit your own photos to the website for inclusion in the collection. Whether it’s your nan skinny-dipping by the old West Pier or just a snapshot of your dad’s manky old car, QueenSpark is happy to look at any submissions.

WORLD OF MOVIES

The Oska Bright Film Festival at Church Street will screen over 100 films in a three-day movie marathon from Tuesday 22nd. Visitors will enjoy an array of material from filmmakers with learning disabilities based in countries as distant as Iran. Oska encourage their young talent to take creative risks in a bid to set the film industry alight so that your mind can be blown by fresh, original material.

NEW IN TOWN

WORDS BY Matt barker, nick coquet, MATTHEW YAU

LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR

Grassroots music in Brighton doesn’t get more collaborative than new label Love Thy Neighbour. You may recognise the name as a kick-ass promoter, but the two-man team’s CV also includes running Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, previously booking the Freebutt, not to mention being in Esben & The Witch. The label’s first release, on Monday 14th, will be the ‘Blood & Air EP’ by Abi Wade, the gentle but tough pizzicato cello master. The label’s launch party is on Wednesday 9th at the Green Door Store.

PROJECT

More very exciting news from the late Tru on West Street. As well as Hed Kandi taking a chunk of it, it’s also giving birth to a new live venue called Project. With a capacity of 900 it fills a vital gap between the Concorde/Komedia and the Dome for acts on that upper-middle rung. Expect to see the likes of Ash and Lee Perry among the first shows at a venue with solid music heritage – we saw excellent gigs by Mogwai and The Beta Band here when it was the Paradox.

CREATE

As you may have noticed we’ve been shooting our covers at Garage Studios for years, and they’ve just had a major reboot and rebrand. The same talented team now have room to swing a cat in three highclass studios, and freeze the motion with the best Profoto and Bowens lights. Aiming to please all photographers from those on a budget to the very top-end shooters (the main studio is huge), they’re also continuing their incredible courses, only now in a warm classroom. Check out welovecreate.com.

HAND BAKED ARCADE

Get off your PS3 and indulge your addictions at The Hand Baked Arcade where you’ll explode joy of retro gaming joy via classic consoles such as SNES and Mega Drive. Unlike those antisocial hours of online multiplayer with screaming scoundrels, you can bring your mates along for a 10-player session of Bomberman – if you even have that many friends anymore. So get yourself down to the Blind Tiger on Sunday 13th for a journey back to the good old days.

DARK PARTY

Starting on Thursday 27th, The Haunt will be bringing you Dark Party, a new weekly indie night to cure you of the horrors of bland chart music. With tunes from The Mystery Jets, Caribou, The Strokes, Future Islands and more, Dark Party is sure to have you prowling about to the sound of eclectic indie anthems. So stretch out your skinny jeans to some dynamic melodies whilst racking up lines of cheap Jägerbombs.

REALLYGOODSTOCK

This is a new monthly event performed by comedy rap duo Sanity Valve made up by Mos Prob and Gish’n’chips. Despite rapping about the most menial of subjects from breakfast to puppies, you’ll be left needing a change of underwear before the next gag catches you out again. They are labelled “wordsmiths of the highest order” by the Tuborg Musical Comedy Awards and you can enjoy their fast-paced wordplay at the Caroline of Brunswick beginning Saturday 5th.

ATM STUDIOS

Music college Access To Music has teamed up with Brighton Electric to completely revamp Scream Studios. ATM’s students will now enjoy free access to the quality recording facilities, which should encourage young prospects to jam their way to prominence. The studios are also available to hire for the public in the evenings and at weekends. See the facilities for yourself at their open days on Saturday 19th from 11am.

FOOLS GOLD

Audio Weds 2nd

Everyone who heard the first Fools Gold album back in 2009 had it as their album of the summer. Something about the San Francisco troupe’s Hebrew pop’n’roll perfectly captured the spirit of a wedding block party that only existed in the imagination. Theirs is a cross-party party; an all-inclusive Hasidic hoedown, all foot-stomping, crowd-involving party tunes, the likes of which you only usually hear coming out of tinny speakers behind the counter in a kosher Californian bodega. (MB)

PURE X

Green Door Store Weds 2nd

This Austin trio released their debut album ‘Pleasure’ this year, gathering no moss on the hipster blogs as a consequence. It’s as drifting and hazy as chillwave, but full of melody and smooth gear changes in between the reverb and feedback. Influenced by the likes of My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus And Mary Chain at their most languid, the album seems dour and lacking ebullience at first, but eventually leaves you feeling quite sanguine once the mist clears. Their live sets apparently breathe the same rewarding air. (TR)

DOG IS DEAD

Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Thurs 3rd

This five-piece band have been on a continuous rise throughout 2011, not slowed in any way by carrying the weight of Nottingham’s expectations. This was further proved this summer with striking sets at festivals such as The Great Escape and Glastonbury. Their style of euphoric indie that’s heavy on sing-along melodies (if only you could sing like them) is as catchy as a frisbee covered in superglue and has earned them a signature to the major label, Atlantic. Expect their rise to continue well into 2012. (TR)

GLEN CAMPBELL Dome Thurs 3rd

“I still love making music and I still love performing for my fans. I’d like to thank them for sticking with me through thick and thin,” said Glen Campbell this summer, announcing plans to retire at the age of 75. Finally succumbing to a longstanding battle against Alzheimer’s, this will be your last chance to witness the dusty yearn of his elegiac Midwestern ruminations on love and life, most notably ‘Wichita Lineman’, arguably music’s greatest heartbreaker. For those that disagree: ‘Guess I’m Dumb’. (BG)

DANANANANAKROYD The Haunt Thurs 3rd

It’s a sad day for twee ‘fight pop’ rockers Dananananakroyd. The Dan Aykroyd-dedicated Glaswegian sextuplet, with more syllables than they have official releases, are embarking on their last ever tour. A tour they promise will be a ‘sphere of blood, guts, human flesh, fire and rock’. If getting sprayed in human residue or incendiaries appeals, or you’d just like to catch one of Britain’s best live acts giving it everything they’ve got one last time, you’ll be there. (TR)

JESSIE J

Brighton Centre Thurs 3rd

“I love Jessie J as much as the next person, but how is her music ‘of black origin’? Is it cause she says ‘man dem’ in her tune?” ranted Lily Allen after October’s controversial Mobo Awards. SOURCE believes this chorus of disapproval actually missed the point. In fact, we reckon the only prize she deserves is ‘Most Boring Broken Leg In Medical History Ever To Feature On Dismally Naff “Only Way Is Essex” Version Of Lady Gaga’. Put that on your mantelpiece! THE RAPTURE

Coalition Thurs 3rd

Is the house of jealous lovers actually still standing? Just about, despite some internecine romantic issues. Eyebrows were first raised when Luke Jenner, Vito Roccoforte and Gabriel Andruzzi kicked Matt Safer out of his bedroom after finally realising his name wasn’t as cool as theirs. Marriage counsellors then went into overdrive, mistakenly believing ‘Sail Away’, the opening track on new album ‘In The Grace Of Your Love’, was an Enya cover. Not so. In fact, their fourth LP confirms a union in rude health. W.A.Y.U.H! (BG)

PATRICK WOLF Komedia Thurs 3rd

Whimsical Patrick’s had his share of struggles, battling unwanted and intrusive interest in his personal life and sexual orientation, and wildly varying receptions to his releases. Despite all that his latest album ‘Lupercalia’, released in June, is the work of a wolf that got the cream. Finally comfortable with himself and his music, the album’s a simpler, pared-down beast, but doesn’t lose any of his indisputably unique charm. (JMM)

JEFFREY LEWIS & THE JUNKYARD

Haunt Fri 4th

The king of anti-folk returns to Brighton, sharing tales of everyday life in NYC with a healthy dose of flight of fancy. Jeff Lewis concerts are more than just gigs, and usually feature at least one PowerPoint presentation – thankfully featuring his comic book art and musical accompaniment rather than bar chart projections of Q3 returns. His brother Jack adds rocky basslines to Jeff’s lyrical folk in a touring line-up that now also includes a keyboard player called Nan. (AP)

CASIOKIDS

collective, so infectious and explosive is their live set, although any energy generated may well be offset by the number of synths on show. The hotly anticipated new album is due out here in January, so this is a first chance to hear it. If you thought that singing their unique brand of synth pop in their native tongue might make them inaccessible, you couldn’t be more wrong. (TR)

MAVERICK SABRE Concorde 2 Mon 7th

Maverick Sabre, or Michael to his friends, is the Hackneyborn genius currently found straddling the chasm between rap and guitar music. With a soulful voice reminiscent, oddly, of Amy Winehouse, albeit via an auto-tuned Akon, Maverick Sabre’s not like anyone else around at the moment. He’s had collaborations with friends in high places and a top 20 single already, and his debut album is released on the very day of this show, so it should be a good one. (JMM)

THE ANTLERS

Concorde 2 Tues 8th

We’ve got dark nights, chilly weather, choppy seas and the impending doom of Christmas, so let’s go the whole hog and wallow in the majestic misery of New York-based The Antlers. Admittedly this year’s ‘Burst Apart’ album had a little more light than its predecessor, the cancer and abuse-orientated ‘Hospice’, but it’s still laden with hauntingly hummable tunes, occasional falsetto hysterics and wonderfully despondent song titles such as ‘I Don’t Want Love’ and ‘Every Night My Teeth Are Falling Out’. Happy days. (GS)

AK/DK •

Pavilion Theatre Thurs 10th

You might remember a few months ago that we put this double-drumming, improvisational synth duo on the cover and called them “the best live band in Brighton.” Well, since then they destroyed all-comers at Playgroup, even finding the time to play a second, gentle, daytime set. If you haven’t caught them yet this is going to be the best £4 you spend this month. And we’re not just saying that because it’s our SOURCE New Music gig. (JK)

STEVIE JACKSON Concorde 2 Thurs 10th

The guitarist from Belle & Sebastian is behind some of the sweetest, twee-est indie ever made, but don’t let that cloud your judgement – Stevie “Reverb” Jackson’s solo endeavours are more 60s surf pop than melancholy folk. Having released the brilliantly titled ‘(I Can’t Get No) Stevie Jackson’ at the end of September, this tour veteran has hit the road on his own. Scotsman’s doing it for himself. (JMM)

BELLOWHEAD

Dome Fri 11th

11-strong English folk superstars Bellowhead play over 20 instruments between them, and their gentle and traditional approach to music making has seen them establish a vast fan base over the last seven years. Sea shanties and rock twinges abound as they promote their latest album, ‘Hedonism Live’. Support comes from pretty foursome Ahab, whose catchy harmonies destine them to become the popular folk equivalent of Take That. Folk That, if you will. (JMM)

DJANGO DJANGO

Hope Fri 11th

They hail from Scotland, they live in East London and Django Django are signed to Because – the French stable that rose up with Ed Banger among many others. Given this garbled upbringing, it’s no wonder that their sound is a chunky soup of Hot Chip, the Beach Boys and Ratatat. Fresh from touring with Metronomy, including a triumphant date at the Royal Albert Hall, Django Django are now heading out to play their own brand of surf harmony meets indie wonk. (MB)

THE MISERABLE RICH • Green Door Store Sat 12th

Making their debut under the arches, the final show of the tour looks like being a bit of a party. Having played a number of churches and spooky stages across the country, this ‘SOURCE

ADAM COHEN

Komedia Mon 14th

He has some mighty big shoes to step into when the time comes, but those expecting a replication of his dad’s gravelvoiced musical poetry oeuvre may come away from this gig disappointed. Though there are vocal tics and shared themes, Adam is strictly Cohen Lite, with a repertoire of love songs that tread a fine line between sensitive and banal. Expect women of a certain age to hang on his every word, but it’s the Leonard covers they’re waiting for. (AP)

THE DARKNESS

Dome Weds 16th

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, the biggest act in the solar system was...The Darkness. One half ridiculous, the other half fucking ridiculous, the quartet inevitably imploded in 2006, following the departure of singer Justin Hawkins, in a blizzard of very good cocaine, very bad songs, laughable outfits and even worse acrimony. Now, somehow, reformed, the original line-up will hope to reclaim all this lost ground, starting here. Only you can stop them. Newsnight is on TV. Stay at home. (BG)

DIMMU BORGIR Concorde 2 Mon 14th

This isn’t just black metal; this is Norwegian black metal – the original and blackest. And Dimmu Borgir aren’t just any Norwegian black metal band – they are legends of a legendary scene. Relatively unfettered by controversy (membership squabbles don’t come close to the ritual murder and church burning that existed elsewhere in the scene), they are still going strong, still painting their faces white and still raising devil horns across the world, mostly in venues far larger. KNIFEWORLD

Prince Albert Weds 16th

Knifeworld are the new six-piece project from Cardiacs and Monsoon Bassoon member Kavus Torabi. Describing themselves as ‘delirious avant-progressive psychedelic rock’, their dense arrangements and joyful melancholia, with influences ranging from XTC to King Crimson, will take you on a challenging Dionysian journey onto the shores of Lysergia. Brighton three-piece Ham Legion (featuring ex-members of Little Trophy) create a unique blend of noisy lo-fi pop punctuated with proggy outbursts, psychedelic breakdowns and passages of cod metal joy. (LMM)

THE BIG PINK

Digital Fri 18th

The phenomenal acclaim of The Big Pink’s debut album ‘A Brief History Of Love’ has granted the band a solid foundation on the electro rock scene – so solid that they claim to be experimenting with hip hop for their second album. With this performance happening just 10 days after the album’s first single release, ‘Stay Gold’, it would be wasteful for local fans to miss the band in the thick of their momentum. (JF)

MILKY WIMPSHAKE West Hill Hall Sat 19th

Despite their fearsomely twee name, Newcastle trio Milky Wimpshake are an energetic, highly melodic punk-pop riot in the flesh. Wiry singer Pete Dale was co-founder of Slampt, the DIY record label/arts organisation that helped give British indie a socialist shot in the arm during the 90s, before being mercilessly caricatured by ambitious escapees Kenickie on their debut EMI single ‘Punka’. An updated cut of 1995’s Slamptumentary film (originally a 50-copy VHS ‘videozine’) precedes tonight’s gig. (SH)

SUMMER CAMP Green Door Store Sat 19th

Jeremy Warmsley, he of slightly fey indie guitar pop, has for a while now been making music with his significant other Elizabeth Sankey, she of hipster music zine God Is In The TV. Having begun life as a full band-sized outfit playing tape-hiss guitar indie, they have, over a year or so and several singles (on Moshi Moshi), shed

Page 14

the band and most of the guitar, opting instead for a very faithful Casio keyboard 80s teen beach sit-com version of their cassette pop, just in time for their debut album. (MB)

THE BESNARD LAKES Brighton Ballroom Weds 23rd

Drawing on the ghosts of Beach Boys past, Canadian husband and wife duo Besnard Lakes are more Dennis than Brian Wilson, and reach a densely ambitious plateau of sound somewhere between My Bloody Valentine and the Alan Parsons Project. Support comes from local ones to watch Man Ray Sky, whose acclaimed live performances combine intense experimental noise with melodic lullabies and dreamy soundscapes, making it well worth arriving early so this time next year you can say you saw them before they were famous. (LMM)

WILD BEASTS

Concorde 2 Sat 26th

Despite that Olympian falsetto and lascivious tales of “taking it in the mouth, like a lion takes his game”, Wild Beasts’ gradual rise to prominence has been founded not on shrill overstatement and filthy theatrics but a special faith in the hypnotic, kaleidoscopic pull of their eroticised journey. Following the sublime, deftly produced third LP, ‘Smother’, they are now rightly positioned amongst British music’s finest acts, particularly on a live stage, where intimacy faces nightly submission to abandon’s bodyslam. Seconds out. (BG)

KASABIAN

Brighton Centre Mon 28th

Following the scrapping of the Gallaghers’ rock’n’roll juggernaut, which last passed its MOT back in 1995, Kasabian’s eminence seems assured. But it’s difficult to get terribly excited by the Leicester rabble, whether the singer wears a Neu! t-shirt or not. Perhaps his Kula Shaker one was in the wash? Then that monster, Zeppelin-aping ‘Days Are Forgotten’ groove snakes in, like the reptilian tail on the velociraptor which adorns their smartly named new album. Basically, they’re marginally less pointless than Oasis. Is this progress? (BG)

Concorde 2 Tues 29th

Fans of Los Angeles punk’n’roll outfit The Bronx may be familiar with this ‘I-can’t-believe-that’s-the-same-band’ side project, For those who haven’t been introduced, Mariachi El Bronx play energetic, trumpets-aplenty Hispanic music that will keep you smiling and dancing right until the last minute. With a second studio album under their belts, their cheerful take on traditional mariachi music provides a breath of fresh air in today’s American punk rock scene. Support comes from Cursive frontman Tim Kasher. (CB)

LISA HANNIGAN

Komedia Mon 28

After recently releasing ‘Passenger’, the follow-up to her Mercury Prize-nominated debut ‘Sea Sew’, Lisa Hannigan plays her first full UK tour of the year. She brings her unique Irish folk to Brighton for the first time since her performance at the Songs For Nick Drake concert at the Brighton Dome back in January. Her return to the city is certainly welcome but make sure you get the venue right as the St George’s Church she’ll play on tour is in Bristol not Brighton. (AJM)

KITTY, DAISY & LEWIS Komedia 30th November

The Durham siblings return to town following their blinding appearance at the infamous Beachdown festival. Still aged only 18 to 22, they’ve been doing this for over 10 years. A mixture of country, rockabilly, ska and swing, their live show is a sight and sound to behold as these annoyingly good looking and talented North Londoners switch instruments as easily as they change styles. And to complete the family unit Dad’s on rhythm guitar and, former Raincoat, Mum’s on double bass. (SC)

BLAH BLAH BLAH dance music renaissance men

WORDS BY James Kendall Photo By Kenny Mc Kracken at create assisted by beth steddon make up by ange watson thanks to Gavin Peacock

They might well be DJs – as well as promoters, producers and graphic designers – but the one thing you can’t say about Blah Blah Blah is that they ain’t rock’n’roll. Their four-year rise to the top of Brighton clubland – from indie electro, through fidget house to a more eclectic, melodic party sound – is littered with craziness. “Major Lazer was the one,” admits Kris. “I got completely hammered and tried to go crowd surfing.” The month before it had gone much more smoothly. Fake Blood was rattling through not one but six encores as the man behind the distinctive Blah Blah Blah graphics floated above the crowd, dropping off the stage and carrying on along the next section of the dancefloor. This time though, Kris had less success and accidentally kneed a girl on the devoted BBB dancefloor in the head. He was rewarded with a punch in his own head from her male companion.

Page 18

“I thought, fair enough, I probably deserved that,” he admits. “And then I managed to loose Mumdance’s phone and ear plugs that he gave to me when he went crowd surfing.” Meanwhile Diplo – one half of Major Lazer – was asking Pete V how many encores his mate Fake Blood had racked up and promising to beat the record. Digital owner Dave Stone was shaking his head, unplugging the decks but every time he did, Diplo used his laptop to flick to another channel and keep the music alive. Eventually Dave won. “Diplo played ‘Red Red Wine’ by UB40 and it got cut off halfway through, so we took up the mantle of playing that at the end of every set,” smiles Jonny. “Although we’ve been banned from playing it in Audio now.” As music fanatics, they run their nights from the dancefloor rather than high up in the booth. “We don’t stand around stroking our chins,” says Pete L. “We

“It’s always been about the music and having a good party,” explains Jonny. “If it was about the money we would have stopped years ago. We all work full-time as well as doing this.” It’s surprising they have enough time to do a 9-5 with all the hours that go into Blah Blah Blah. As well as DJing, promoting and running their excellent blog, they’ve also started making music. Their debut, ‘Left’, is an emotional piece of Carl Craig-like prog-tech house that’s one of our favourite pieces of music to come out of Brighton this year. It’s a masterclass in restraint that delivers a euphoric payoff after four and a half minutes, before shifting up another notch to finish. “We literally sat there with Ableton and YouTube and learned as we made it,” says Jonny. “There were three trial tracks before that one. The thing with that one is that we all really liked it – and the support SOURCE gave us was amazing – but even afterwards we feel like there’s some way to go. It’s a starting point.” “It’s finding the time to do it, “ says Pete L, “if only to be able to express ourselves.” And now they’ve started a record label they’ve got a perfect place to get their tracks out. Or, it seems, not. “If we do something that we think is good enough we’ll definitely be sending it around to gauge a natural reaction. If the natural reaction is a bit ‘nuuh’ then it won’t even be considered for the label. The first release already is really strong and the artist’s second release is even stronger. There’s no way that we’d put any of our own stuff on there if it wasn’t as good as that.” The idea of having a record label goes all the way back to their second event, in the days when they used to always have a live act on the bill. Thanks to Kris’ prolific use of MySpace, Blah Blah Blah had a real web presence before they even had a regular night and a little band called Fenech-Soler asked if they could come to BBB for the band’s second ever gig. Jonny and Kris said on the night that if they knew how to run a label they’d sign them there and then. “At the time we had no idea what we were doing so we WEB: weareblahblahblah.com didn’t,” sighs Jonny. “Damn it!” NEXT EVENTS: Warehouse at Audio, Sat 5th; Blah Blah Blah NYE After Party, Digital, Sat 31st Dec Over the years the BBB blog LABEL: REID ‘Genesis’ via iTunes and Beatport grew and the quartet started to get sent more and more music they loved. “We got sent the music by REID and it prompted us to see if we could run a label,” Jonny says of the beautiful, Four Tet-tinged electronic sunrise put the night on so we’d have somewhere to play but also to of ‘Genesis’, a track for your headphones not DJ sets. have somewhere to dance.” “It was one of those times when you’re surprised that an artist But the quartet behind perhaps Brighton’s favourite 4/4 club hadn’t been signed,” says Pete V. “He was sending it to us so night do take things very seriously. How else could they have that we could give it away for free but it was too good for that.” supported Soulwax, played Ibiza and the main room at Fabric, “The big difference now is that you don’t have to have vinyl,” become residents at both Audio and Digital and put on artists continues Jonny. “So in terms of set-up costs, there aren’t any. like Caribou, Joy Orbison, Sinden and Julio Bashmore? But you need to have a good enough, marketable brand so “The amount of exit flyering we’ve done!” says Pete V. “Being that distributors will take you seriously.” at home and having to go out to flyer at 2am on a Wednesday night because your night is the following Saturday is no fun.” While all that takes off they’ve still got their residency at “We worked our asses off basically,” adds Jonny, who is now Audio’s Warehouse to look after, as well as the huge New the promotions manager of Digital. “We were lucky, but we Year’s Eve after party at Digital, an event that suits them down worked hard.” to the ground. But trouble does follow them around – from getting too drunk “If you go to any Blah Blah Blah night, hopefully it’s a party,” on their first birthday and forgetting to give Bobmo his ticket says Jonny. “We’ve never stood with our heads down, playing back to France, to the overzealous dancer at Beachdown who a progressive house set for five hours. HARD TIMES • Green Door Store Tuesdays

Feeling down on your luck? What you need is a free, late-night celebration of sounds of struggle, strife and penury. DJ Jon Slade (Born Bad) and guests ranging from Stay Sick to Stone To The Bone play the funky howls and desperate yelps of the dispossessed, plus any party tunes that take their fancy. It’s a rare thing to find music of this calibre being played on a school night; almost worth calling in sick the next day and ensuring further Hard Times to come. (LMM)

CLAUDE VONSTROKE Audio Fri 4th

Not just the Detroit house honcho Claude VonStroke himself, but a raft of producers from the DirtyBird label will be gracing Audio tonight, as Justin Martin and Eats Everything heat up the decks for what promises to be a very house-y all-nighter. If you like your beats on the cleaner side of techno then this is a perfect winter warmer. (JMM)

PHI LIFE CYPHER & BLAK TWANG

Easy Bar Fri 4th

Is it just us, or has Easy Bar’s transition from post-shopemergency-pint-stop to quite a cool little gig venue come out of nowhere? And their Caribbean roasts are another exciting development. We digress: on Friday 4th there’s a night of the most brilliant British hip hop, with Luton heroes Phi Life Cypher and long-term rap star Blak Twang. Such a line-up doesn’t usually surprise us down the local, and especially not for the good old price of free. (JMM)

LOWKEY

Concorde 2 Fri 4th

You’ll be forgiven for not knowing much about Lowkey; his conscious hip hop is ostracised by the mainstream media due to its political content – tracks like ‘Terrorist?’, ‘Obama Nation’

and ‘Long Live Palestine’ question institutionalised rhetoric and therefore won’t be heard on Radio 1 anytime soon. Not only does he have a worthy, well-informed message, he delivers it with eloquence, soul and often brutality. With his new album, ‘Soundtrack To The Struggle’, expect some serious and previously unheard material. (ZC)

RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY Life Fri 11th

Red Bull doesn’t just give you wings, it also gives you music workshops, festivals and club nights. This evening Pearson Sound aka Ramadanman tops the bill. His sparse percussion and Chicago juke stylings gained him quick notoriety on the underground club scene, then he went on to set up Hessel Audio with Panagea and Ben UFO, making him a true bass music luminary. Pariah joins the line-up with his Burial-like atmospherics as well as Marcelus Pittman and Lorca. (ZC)

IN THE FACE •

Volks Sat 12th

Kanji Kinetic and Submerse return to headline Brighton’s best bassline night and tour their collaboration EP released on new imprint, Mutant Bass Records. In The Face has been fronting the wonky beat scene with sensory overloading sonics and nauseous ket-step sounds for a few years now, mixing manic rave vibes with euphoricly unhinged tracks. So if you want a night of blitzkrieg bassline that’ll make you dance no matter what, now you know where to go. (ZC)

HUSH YOUR BEAK Concorde 2 Sat 12th

Soundboys and soundgirls, you better get your best skanking shoes on, David ‘Ram Jam’ Rodigan is back. After his packed show last year Rodigan returns to Brighton with a record bag full of dubplates, signal and soul. With support from Rinse FM’s The Heatwave and Urban Nerds’ Klose One, tonight’s going to sell out quicker than hot hash cakes, so don’t be a wasteman, get your ticket now. (ZC)

REWIND •

Coalition Sat 12th

When DJ Format brought us the fun-loving album, ‘Music For The Mature B-Boy’, it was a pleasant change from the vicious battle raps of UK hip hop and the bling-encrusted murder anthems from America. DJ Format and his MC, Abdominal, had a sense of humour. They could lace a track, kill a beat and cuss you down, all the while leaving a smile on your face, and his live sets promote his old school De La Soul-esque feelgood vibes, which is exactly what Rewind’s all about. (ZC)

YUKSEK

Coalition Thurs 17th

This Parisian’s name is probably the only ugly thing about him: the multi-talented demi-god Pierre-Alexandre Busson makes the most beautiful electro-based, house-influenced creations, and only produces under the name Yuksek when he’s not collaborating with a plethora of other French artists. Since the release of his second album, ‘Living On The Edge Of Time’ in June, Yuksek’s been on a non-stop tour, and is showing no signs of fatigue. Support comes from Mondkopf, fresh from his post-punk and black metal-inspired Aphex-eque second LP ‘Rising Doom’. (JMM)

DOOM

Concorde 2 Fri 18th

It’s a big one. The artist formerly known as MF Doom is back in Brighton. Whether you thought the MF stood for Metal Face, Fingers, Fist or something else entirely, he’s dropped the mystery and is playing under the sturdy monicker Doom now, which is fitting: as one of the East Coast’s most solid hip hop producers, he’s – although we hate to say it – a legend. Support comes from Samiyam, and with live art and graffiti going on too, this night will be one you can brag about. (JMM)

ECLAIR FIFI

Riki Tik Sat 19th

LuckyMe is one of the most exciting things to come out of Scotland since the 25-year Glenfiddich; an electronic hip hop label repping such fresh audio treats as Hudson Mohawke and Jacques Greene. Eclair Fifi is their self-proclaimed first lady,

and with good reason: her musical knowledge knows no boundaries, and she’s not the type to let genres bother her either. Effortlessly mixing unknown Italo grooves with the newest electro hits, hip hop classics and generally anything that sounds good, she’s not just a pretty face. (JMM)

JACK BEATS

Digital Sat 19th

You can’t ignore Jack Beats – their bastardisation of house music is like Frankenstein’s monster; the original components are gutted and glued back together, creating an obscene marvel that refuses to be tamed. The bolshy basslines and big breakdowns grab you by the ear like a school dinner lady, dragging you along the dancefloor before dropping into a bombastic wobble that pushes the best bass bins to breaking point. Plus there’s Shogun Audio boss, Friction, to ensure the night’s ended at high speed. (ZC)

RUSKO

Audio Weds 23rd

Creating a seminal dubstep track with ‘Cockney Thug’ back in 2007, Rusko strutted onto the scene full of wobbly bass, tasty trumpets and ironic gangster swagger. Fast-forward a few years and he’s living in LA producing commercially viable chainsaw beats for MIA, Britney and Rihanna, which isn’t surprising – his take on dubstep was always more accessible than the dark and moody soundscapes that had dominated previously. It’ll be interesting to see what he belts out tonight; whether it’s his old school, upbeat squelch or his pop-friendly leanings of late. (ZC)

THERAPY SESSIONS Volks Fri 25th

If you like your drum’n’bass hard and heavy then chances are you’re no stranger to the Therapy Sessions parties. Having made a huge impact worldwide in the last half decade or so, they return to the south coast for the first time in a couple of years. With a 20k Void sound system being installed in the Volks, be prepared for Barcode Recordings’ head honcho Donny, Audio and Gein to wipe the floor with you. Not for the faint of heart (CB)

Jam City’s sound owes as much to Gary Numan and The Human League as it does to his confederates on London label Night Slugs. The industrial production line beats and backing synths have sinister dystopian undertones that would be well used to score scenes of car crashes. His tune ‘Magic Drops’ was a brighter but still woozy affair, with its disorientating slide whistle and Ballardian beat it still wouldn’t have been out of place on the Blade Runner soundtrack. (ZC)

CHARITY JUNGLE •

Blind Tiger Sat 26th

If charities have to solicit, give us a blinding jungle night over persistent bucket-shaking chuggers any day. All proceeds might be flying straight out on the soonest Moneygram to a school in Tanzania, but there’s never a whiff of self-righteous do-goodery about these nights, which is why we like them so much. A bevy of local DJs playing drum’n’bass, jungle and ragga; cut-price cocktails, and a hangover that helps to save the world. Lovely. (JMM)

Responsible for the recent renaissance of British house music, Richy Ahmed has certainly been a busy boy over the summer. He’s played at Sonar in Barcelona, The Nexus at Burning Man festival and Space in Ibiza, and he’s still got the energy to pack out The Tube. His disco, techno and funk influences are major ingredients behind his re-design of British house, and tunes like ‘Suck It’ and ‘Rock’n’Rolla’, with their confident beats and glowing basslines, demonstrate why you’d better believe the hype. It’s testament to how far Riki Tik has come recently that they’d even consider putting on live hip hop. Tonight’s Kung Fu features not only local Rum Com hero Gi3MO but also London heavy hitters The I.R.S. That’s a fairly serious UK hip hop showing even before Dirty Dyke pops up and takes to the mic. So we’re looking at a top class night of rhymes that most full-sized clubs would be pleased to host. Which might explain why the upper level of Riki Tik is rammed with hats and hoods and hands in the air. The vibe is good even when the tunes get dark, with everyone nodding their heads to the MCs, even if they’re not breaking out into dancing. To be fair,

THEATRE: KEELER Theatre Royal Mon 7th

A prominent cabinet minister has an inappropriate personal relationship, lies to the House and his career goes tits up – no, not last month but nearly 50 years ago. The Profumo affair was a tabloid dream, with showgirls, spies and suicide, and it’s a tale that’s certainly been told a million times over. This version however is based on the autobiography of the showgirl in question, Christine Keeler, and is seen to be a definitive inside account of the biggest political sex scandal of the century. Starring Alice Coulthard and Paul Nicholas, it’s a historical portent for dodgy political behaviour to come. (NC)

THEATRE: Big Daddy vs Giant Haystacks

For anyone prone to sniggering and the occasional wet fart impression during supposedly tense cinema sequences, the shadowy figure of Bruce Bane provides singlehanded gratification (snort). Joe Bone’s shady film noir parody hero is the product of film and graphic novels, deploying sleights of scene and sound effects in a third instalment commissioned by the Brighton Festival after rapturous acclaim for the previous two at the Fringe. Ben Roe – a “one-man Morricone”, no less – adds a live guitar soundtrack. (BM)

Award-winning Fringe theatre and the distinct possibility of leotards and grunting, as writers Brian Mitchell and Joseph Nixon (best known for Victorian sketch show saviours The Ornate Johnsons) re-enact the sweaty weekly televised heroics of two hefty bunglers. The action takes place between 1976 and 1988, and Paul McCartney, Chris Tarrant, Frank Sinatra, Princess Margaret and Greg Dyke are among the stars of the era whose wailings are revisited along the way. It’s easy to write off Lee Nelson, the manic alter-ego of comic Simon Brodkin, as lowbrow BBC3 ASBO-tainment; indeed his Well Good Show was padded out with the kind of end-of-pier tat that even OMG With Peaches Geldof might have balked at. But live, Nelson is a seasoned stand-up and works the room like a pro. It’s comedy from the Vicky Pollard school of working class mockery, but he does it with such an affection and puppy

THEATRE: The Two Man Tempest Pavilion Theatre Sat 26th

It’s hard to tell how a take on The Tempest incorporating mime, mask, singing, prancing, storms, apparitions and virtuoso directing might work out, but it sounds intriguing in a month when the onset of winter has resulted in a noticeable beefing up of all things experimental on the boards. ART

DO KNIT DISTURB WORDS BY NICK COQUET

Hotel Pelirocco, bookable now

It’s a long time since art was the exclusive preserve of galleries. From Henry Moores to stencils on doors, there’s now seemingly nowhere original art can’t take root. But a hotel room? Usually the only art you’ll see there is an endless array of bland reproductions, joylessly bought in bulk and framed in homogeneity. Until now. The Pelirocco has long believed that a hotel room isn’t just a bed for the night. Their individually designed rooms have always impressed and Do Knit Disturb, the latest addition from designer Kate Jenkins of Cardigan, is certainly no exception. The entire room is a crochet-covered concept; the telephone, lampshade and tea set, accessorised by knitted extras like a toothpaste tube and even a woollen fry-up. Five kilos of yarn went into this creation that’s already made national headlines, and it’s in situ for the next three years.

CRITIC BRIGHTON’S BEST releases WORDS BY JESSICA MARSHALL MCHATTIE, GARY SCATTERGOOD, Steve Clements, CHARLIE WOOD photo by james kendall

SINGLE: GUY ANDREWS • Shades/Textures (Hemlock)

Guy Andrews’ two-track single ‘Shades/Textures’ is awaited with high expectations from anyone in the know. His bass-led style is clear in ‘Shades’, a dark, percussive sound with its roots in progressive techno, and undeniably house-influenced overtones. ‘Textures’ is funkier and lighter, demonstrating the versatility this young producer has, and his ability to create complex tracks that work equally well on the dancefloor and under closer scrutiny. Definitely one of Brighton’s hottest talents. (JMM)

EP: MANNI DEE • Unofficial Remixes (Self-released)

Manni Dee’s gradual shift from electronic newcomer to stalwart support act is complete, and his outstanding remixes of the 90s classics you know and love will have impressed you, if you’ve been fortunate enough to hear them live. This remix EP takes Beyonce, Missy Elliot, Aaliyah and others, places their acapellas over original bass-heavy beats of his own, reworking them into catchy, irrepressible masterpieces. Available online for however much you want to pay at mannidee.bandcamp.com (JMM)

SINGLE: DERRIERE • Battle Plan (Kudos)

‘Battle Plan’ is Derriere’s debut single, and a brilliant introduction to their style: rollicking, updated 50s swing, raw vocal sleaze, and rhythmic guitars to get your hips gyrating and your lips pouting. The type of dirty rhythms and blues that originated in Chuck Berry’s wet dreams, the band launch the release at the Blind Tiger on Friday 4th. (JMM)

Page 34

ALBUM: the MISERABLE RICH • Miss You In The Days (Humble Soul)

With a sumptuous single already out there, album number three was recorded in the haunted Blickling Hall and released, appropriately, on Halloween. Twisted nursery rhymes recited over a 50s theremin sci-fi soundtrack merge with poetically sinister pleadings; the ever-present strings arousing a frisson that makes each song a mini epic. Sharp wordplay with complex arrangements, in turn subtle and dramatic, create a smell of sensuality and a lurking foreboding throughout. Mournful yet beautiful. (SC)

SINGLE: STUART NEWMAN •

DEMO OF THE MONTH:

ADOLESCENT • Leave For Summer

THE MISERABLE RICH

Having already drenched the streets of Brighton with thick reverb and ambient sounds, Adolescent’s newest collection of material seems to follow closely behind his debut EP ‘Run Away From Bad People’. The title mirrors the melancholy atmosphere which awaits inside the two tracks. Both feel spacious and important, using a minimal collection of sounds to explain something much more intricate. This piece of dreamy, down-tempo electronica seems the perfect soundtrack to the closing moments of summer. (CW)

(We’re Living In) Another Dimension (stuartnewmanmusic.com)

Onetime mellowed-out songsmith Stuart Newman continues on his march to heavier and far more intriguing numbers with his latest offering. ‘(We’re Living In) Another Dimension’ combines a bizarrely brilliant array of vocal layers – with his trademark deep and occasionally eerie style at the fore – along with a humdinger of a tune which unexpectedly bursts into a heaving mass of choppy guitars towards the end. If he keeps on exceeding expectations like this, he’s going to find himself in a dimension of his own. Have a listen at his website. (GS)

CINECITY A FESTIVAL OF FILM WORDS BY NICK COQUET, STUART HUGGETT, JEssica MARSHALL MCHATTIE

Occasional moviegoers might be forgiven for thinking the medium is only ever experienced amid the sicky aroma of popcorn, while snickering idiots chat and text throughout. And that Will Smith is in every film you’re ever likely to see. There’s nothing wrong with such visual fast food now and then of course, but the international diversity and creativity that cinema offers deserves celebrating and promoting to a wider audience. Enter CINECITY, in town for its 9th annual outing with a programme spread across the Duke of York’s and University of Brighton. As well as exclusive screenings there are Q&As, live soundtracks, exhibitions and installations – here’s some highlights.

SHAME

Duke of York’s Thurs 17th November

The festival’s opening night film comes with a welterweight of expectation. Following his desperately bleak portrayal of IRA H-block protests in Hunger, Steve McQueen’s second feature is a similarly raw portrayal, this time tackling sexual addiction, starring Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan. McQueen’s talents of visual art and film direction promise a unique interpretation and Fassbender’s performance has already won him Best Actor at Venice. (NC)

There’s a saying in the more litigious quarters of Tinseltown – you don’t mess with the Mouse. One assumes Martin Arnold’s cinematic deconstruction of Mickey and Pluto has gone under Walt’s radar. This is a darkly humorous, gradual revelation of cartoon body parts appearing out of the bedroom gloom, set to a hypnotically rhythmic snore score. Just part of a larger film project by the Austrian director, it’s as nuts as it sounds. (NC)

LIGHTS, CAMERA, BRIGHTON MAKING MOVIES BY THE SEA WORDS BY NICK COQUET

As well as iconic depictions in movies like Brighton Rock and Quadrophenia, Brighton and Hove has had filmmaking in its blood for over 100 years – the craft was pretty much invented here. The Hove Museum has 35mm cameras dating back to 1896, which were used to make the first film ever to be shown to the public at a ‘kinema’ (now the Melrose restaurant opposite the West Pier) and of course we’re home to the UK’s oldest and pretty much best cinema, the fabulous Duke of York’s. Just as the DIY ethos has democratised music production via affordable technological gizmos, filmmaking has also followed suit. What used to require hours in spendy edit suites is all on a laptop these days, and with HD cameras now standard high street fodder there’s no excuse not to realise your widescreen ideas. Of course, just having good tools doesn’t preclude you from being a bad workman so you’re lucky to be in Brighton, where industry pros and

Page 38

likeminded amateurs are falling over themselves to bring out the Scorsese in you. With a variety of courses on offer, the Brighton Film School is the place to get officially qualified for those with professional industry aspirations. With the British film industry suffering the squeeze like the rest of us, especially in the light of the British Film Council’s dissolution, job opportunities are thin on the ground. An accredited academic grounding could come in extremely handy, and this is a cheaper and more flexible alternative to university where Brightonians can learn locally on one-day, weekend or evening courses. Gary Barber from BFS told us, “We’re in a revolutionary period in filmmaking, the new Canon DSLR cameras are fantastic but it doesn’t give you a discipline and understanding of working as part of a crew. On any set everyone has a clear job to do; what we do is get the students to work as a team and understand those roles. We link with the industry to start getting them work as runners and third ADs, so when they leave us they have the knowledge to be able to get work.” We wondered what kind of shape the industry was really in these days. “Feature films have always been big business, budgets are rising. TV is in a really healthy state and there’s lots of low-budget work going on.” Filmmaking is only part of what the school does, they also teach scriptwriting and acting for camera. All three areas feed into each other, which leads to high quality films at the end of the courses. If you’re looking for encouragement in your cinematic endeavours but don’t necessarily want to go down an official tutor/student route, the Brighton Filmmakers Coalition could be right up your street. They’re a free networking and resource group – just the thing when you’ve hit a brick wall. Jason Davison, “vaguely in charge”, explains: “The Brighton Film

www.brightonsource.co.uk/features

Makers Coalition is a networking and resource group for people who want to make films in Brighton and Hove. We meet at the Marwood Café, on Sundays at 6pm. We get the members to work on film challenges, either solo or in groups – the next one’s in February where we’re going to try and make a feature film in a month.” Like everyone else, Jason says funding is an issue: “But money doesn’t make films, it’s more about having respect so people will want to work with you. Ultimately people want to be involved in good projects.” And you don’t need much to get started anyway. “A little bit of equipment, but after that it’s just bus fares really. Locations are a bigger stumbling block; the laws are quite vague. Interiors are always a problem, too.” He advises newcomers to just get stuck in: “Lots of people spend years planning a film but nothing is a substitute for experience. The first few I made were terrible but that really doesn’t matter – I made them quite quickly and gradually they just get better.” The Brighton Film Makers Coalition meets every week and the next film challenge is in February but you can see the results of the current one at a December screening. Pop down to the Marwood on Sunday to find out when and where. One area of filmmaking that’s definitely on the rise is the documentary, with aspiring Michael Moores popping up all over the place. Dunstan Bruce, alongside his wife Daisy Asquith, is part of Dandy Films based in Brighton. They’ve made documentaries on subjects ranging from clowns to Sham 69, but it’s not as simple as pointing equipment at people and capturing telly magic. “There’s no lack of ideas or enthusiasm, it all comes down to funding,” he says. “Commissioners can also be reluctant to take a risk with an idea – obviously a lot of TV is formulaic nowadays and there’s less space for documentaries, certainly on the main channels.” If you have the means to self-fund a film, the commissioning process can be sidestepped, but caution is advised. Dunstan’s film about vintage punks Sham 69 touring China was made in this way, but problems with the band splitting up and ex-members blocking music usage left him in a financial hole with the project. “Daisy goes through commissioning editors, usually for the BBC or Channel 4, so she always gets funding in advance. But there are other ways, through crowd-funding set-ups like Indie GoGo or Kickstarter. You can fund an entire production like that.” Dunstan believes documentaries can change the world in a way that music no longer seems able to. As a member of Chumbawamba that was part of his agenda for a long time, but the flourishing of campaigning films and issue-based productions from the likes of Moore and Fran Armstrong, who made the infamous McLibel film and Age Of Stupid, has shifted his creative emphasis. It also seems a medium perfectly suited to the DIY mentality. “You can make a film on a laptop and a digital camera, anyone can make a film.“ One rising star of Brighton’s film community is writer and director Jamie Patterson of Jump Start Productions, with four features under his belt as well as the forthcoming City Of Dreamers, which has just wrapped and premieres at the Duke of York’s on December 17th. We spoke to him about the making of his latest work. “With this film, the budget was about 10 grand. All the others so far have been around three, but this one was a bit more mainstream and marketable. Funding came from lots of sources – we sold executive producer credits, did fundraising

www.brightonsource.co.uk/FEATURES

events like film quizzes, sold tickets to the premiere upfront, and had some business investment as well.” The film sounds right up SOURCE’s street. It’s about a girl who moves to Brighton and gets caught up in the music scene, and there are about 10 local bands featured in it. But filming here isn’t always easy. “Locations with hardly any money are difficult. The Council don’t care about art, they have their processes and it’s £250 a day to shoot on the beach or Pavilion Gardens. We were there doing a quick scene and we got approached within about a minute by these security guards who came out of nowhere. But generally everyone was really good to us. We didn’t pay for a single location, it was just invites to the premiere. Norman Cook did a cameo in the film and helped us out a bit; that helped get people to take it all a bit more seriously.” This is obviously the biggest production Jamie’s been in charge of. But how did he begin? “The first feature I ever made was for about £100 – I had a camera and some mates, I wrote a one-location, two-actor script and got on with it. I’ve never been a believer in shorts; it’s so hard to set up a character in 10 minutes and the competition out there is insane. I learnt more making a feature. My company pushes the idea that you can make features for next to no money and we can help you do that with equipment and editors – we’re doing three of them next year like that.” Jump Start are open to script submissions – they have a script supervisor who reads all of them, and they always get back to people. “We always work with new talent, people on their first films.” They’re also moving with the times with their own online distribution company where you can download films for a few quid, actually putting some money back in producers’ pockets. “It’s too hard to make money in traditional film distribution, especially with low-budget movies. People are used to Hollywood at the cinema, they won’t bother with something that cost £3,000 to make. On my films we have a crew of seven and everyone chips in and works very tightly together. There’s no ‘Best Boy’. It’s painful when we’re struggling to get 10 grand to make movies and then you see the crap that gets funded for £100,000 or £200,000.” His advice for someone starting out? “Go off and write a feature, with limited characters and locations that you can shoot on one camera in a weekend or two. Spend as little as you can, call in favours from friends and family – make them all producers for a £25 investment. Edit it, show it around, enter it into festivals and you’ll get yourself a name straight away – you made a feature film.” There’s been lots of talk about the decline of the UK film industry, but getting out there and doing it for yourself has clearly never been simpler. Indeed, we review locally made films in our Critic section, and we’ve seen some excellent work over the years, so get your ideas on screen and add to our definitive cine city.

SOURCE VIRGINS
DOING STUFF FOR THE FIRST TIME

BEING A ROCK STAR WORDS BY NICK COQUET Illustration by ADAM MOORE - MOOREDRAW.CO.UK

THE REASONS

I’ve been involved in and around music for most of my adult life – working on records from Einstürzende Neubauten to Katie Melua, as well as passing judgement on hundreds of Brighton bands for SOURCE. But always on the safe side of the desk – I’d never actually got up and done it for myself, put my money where my mouth is.

THE EXPERIENCE

I joined the good people at Rokaoke for their intensive all-day rock star experience. It started with some basic vocal tuition singing to a backing track, where I realised with horror that the songs I’d chosen (‘Rebel Rebel’ and ‘Walk On The Wild Side’, both records I’ve owned since I was about 12) weren’t as lyrically implanted in my mind as I’d assumed. Both have ‘doo doo doos’ and stuff that need to come in at the right place, and without David and Lou prompting you it’s alarming how tricky that can be. While my fellow singers took their turn with the tutor I lurked outside, smoking my ears off and mentally securing my doo doos as they played over and over on my iPod. I then ran through the songs with the band, finished half a minute or so before they did, and panicked a bit more. We recorded a couple of versions in the studio – “OK, let’s do it again, from the third doo doo doo…” – and it was time to hit the venue.

The band ran through some warm-up numbers as, like condemned men, we sat watching from upstairs. I sipped iced water for my voice, darling – tonight booze would not be my friend. I didn’t want to go all Winehouse or anything. The crowd began to swell as friends and strangers alike filed in like witnesses to a rock execution. The band were nicely warmed up, I was sweating like Lee Evans. One by one we became fewer as novice singers took to the stage. Because my songs had these special guests I’d been scheduled to go on last, the headline act if you will. Compère and guitarist Kit Ashton whooped the audience into appreciative cheering for ‘God Save The Queen’ and ‘Heart Of Glass’. As the last dramatic bars of ‘We Are The Champions’ filled the room and my new friend Mike the financial adviser took his bow, I heard my own name through the PA and felt the arm of Pippa, our artist PA, on mine as I was led through the crowd.
The voice coach Sharon had asked what I had planned in terms of stagecraft. With ‘Wild Side’ it’s probably not sensible to launch into a lavishly choreographed Lady Gaga routine, so I’d planned to vaguely wander about while singing. But it was quite cramped up there with Herbie’s massive double bass and the floor was laden with criss-crossed leads – I didn’t want to trip and bust my head open on his prized instrument. As the guest introduction preamble passed, the room was hushed and that bassline, one of the most famous ever written, rumbled out…
Like I say, I thought I’d known these songs since I was a kid, but I’d had to come up with a clever mental link to the order of the verses. Holly, Candy, Little Joe, Sugar Plum Fairy, Jackie... We don’t need to go into what that was right now, but it worked anyway. It’s a soft song to sing and it was difficult to hear if I was hitting the notes, but at least the glare of the lights meant I couldn’t see a single face in the audience making desperate cutthroat motions or anything. My car park revision paid off and my doo doos arrived suitably on cue, the crowd helpfully singing along with the part of the lyrical “coloured girls”. Last verse wrapped up, I watched Ralph’s sax solo while silently plotting the structure of ‘Rebel Rebel’ one last time. There was actual applause, quite a lot of it to be perfectly conceited, and we were off again.
Lou Reed’s never really been much of a visual performer for me, but I’ve got hours and hours of Bowie on video. While not much of a dancer he’s certainly got plenty of stage moves, which I thought I’d try and channel a bit within my limited floor space. The iconic intro rang out and I was away, buoyed by the cheering and plenty less nervous than I was at the start. This was more of a vocal belter with plenty of opportunity for sextype moves and swagger, which I’ll admit I treated the audience to. Some thrusting and wiggling may have taken place. For the first time that day my interpretation of the song mirrored the band’s to a tee, possibly with some ad-libbing of the outro but at least we still all finished at the same time. I was hit in the chest by a white cotton bundle – I’d literally had a pair of panties thrown at me. I dabbed them at my brow and stood dramatically beneath the lights as applause washed over me. Yep, I reckoned. I fucking smashed that.

Brighton Ballroom has an illustrious history as a Grade 2-listed, 18th century mausoleum. It seemed a mockingly threatening legacy for a venue in which I stood every chance of dying a horrible public death. We arrived in our executive cars and were ushered into the VIP area, where I met my bass player for the evening. This made it a bit more daunting, seeing as how it was Herbie Flowers. He played bass on the songs I would be singing. On the actual records. With actual David Bowie and actual Lou Reed. I’d wondered how they were going to do the sax solo at the end of ‘Wild Side’ – the band I’d briefly Oh god, yes. I’ve got Bowie on video saying how he’s “done rehearsed with didn’t have all the drugs but nothing compares one. No problem. Bizarrely, to the buzz of being on stage”, and Ralph Brown would be he’s bang on the money. People guesting. That’s Ralph Brown afterwards – women, no less – who played drug dealer Danny were extraordinarily complimentary in Withnail & I. I realised I and as a bit of a show-off anyway I THANKS: Hereward, Kit and all at Rokaoke

STREET STYLE

WORDS BY NICK COQUET
PHOTO BY KEVIN MEREDITH AT LOMOKEV.COM

For our film issue we thought we’d try and find someone with a truly classic, cinematic street style. Danielle is a second-year student of Fashion History who loves to wear her studies on her sleeve, which isn’t always as time-consuming as you might imagine. While regular boot sale and charity shop trawls will usually pay bargain dividends, more and more contemporary businesses are realising the desire for classic styles and recreating the cuts and cloths from the past, taking them straight to the high street.

Danielle’s a big fan of Katherine Hepburn films, and loves all the effort people made with their fashion back then. Her outfit is also a nod to the austerity that characterised post-war Britain and obviously has a renewed currency in the 21st century. Beret from eBay
“I think it was about £2, I just guessed it would fit. Underneath, my hair’s in victory rolls, held in place with the strongest TRESemmé hairspray.”

 Jacket nicked from sister
“I like it because it’s smart. It’s not vintage but it’s a kind of 1940s style which I like.” Brooch from a charity shop “It’s a lion – it cost about 10p. I’ve got quite a collection of brooches. The handbag’s from a charity shop too.”

 Jumper from car boot sale
“Again, I like it because it’s got that 40s look. I’m wearing it over a shirt with a flower brooch on the collar.”

 Pencil skirt from Matalan
 “I like their business-y stuff, it’s another smart-looking item.”

 Shoes from MissLFire.com
“They’re a vintage reproduction website with designs based on old styles.”

Unsung heroes 100 people who make brighton what it is Steve Glashier No.24 WORDS BY NICK COQUET

VIDEO IMAGE FROM BLOOD RED SHOES ‘HEARTSINK’

A video and commercial director of international repute, Steve Glashier built up his first showreel making amazing promos for Brighton bands like Blood Red Shoes and The Lodge, something he still loves to do. Does imagination make up for lack of budget? With The Lodge house party video we got in all the dodgy people we knew, like drug dealers, and it was just a party in front of the camera. It really worked, it went mental on the internet and was one of the first of my videos that a lot of people saw. I don’t think we were paid for any of those early videos, but as much as it was me doing bands favours, they were giving me the opportunity to make videos. How much of video direction is overcoming all the technical challenges? You have these ideas and then you realise you’ve got to actually set up a camera on the singer with a light on his back… Knowing what I know now I wouldn’t do it. They’re mental videos with no understanding of anything, but a bit of arrogance and ignorance made it work.

Is it good to be working on bigger productions with better equipment now? Looking back, I’ve managed to get away with quite a lot on really shit cameras – now everything takes so long, with 30 people bringing the lights in, and you really just want that freedom of when you first started. What are you up to now? I’ve just finished a video for an artist called Ren Harvieu on Island Records, I’m about to do the Quantic Soul Orchestra in Spain, just finishing a Playstation advert, and then a couple more videos I think…

Do you think about a video’s viral potential when you’re making it? I just got in on that initial wave, when there was a freedom in that you didn’t have to get it on telly anymore, so you could take things a bit further. Suddenly you can have drugs in it, a full party – you can push it a bit.

SECRET EATER

THE MUCKY DUCK 7-9 Manchester St, (01273) 601450 Tues-Sun, 12-7pm

THE PLACE: When we walked into the Mucky Duck a couple of months ago it was love at first sight. An old man’s boozer with a modern, arty twist, it’s exactly what we look for in a place to hang out in and catch up with friends. We tested the food within the first week of the menu being drawn up and it was incredible, so having given them a month or so to settle in, we thought it time to deliver our official verdict. THE MEAL: We pop in at lunchtime and there’s an instant bonus in the form of four starters for a tenner. Never being ones to turn our nose up at the chance for gluttony on the

business card we dive right in. The soup of the day (£3.50) is a winter warmer – butternut squash and chili – all fresh and earthy. The pork paté (£3.50) doesn’t feel unhealthy like some paté can. It’s light but solid like terrine, but still smooth, and comes with chunky, fresh piccalilli. The mackerel (£3.50) dissolves on our fork, coming with fresh and crunchy gherkin and a boiled egg. But the revelation is the scotch duck egg (£3), a massive, crispy treat you could easily share. Lovely and with a runny yolk, the sausage meat is herby, like a Lincolnshire sausage. By now we’ve had enough food for lunch, but press on for the sake of our readers. The pork belly (£8.50) was excellent last time we visited, one of the best mains we’d had all year. But this time comes without crackling or apple in the mash (it really works!). However the meat is still soft and the gravy rich. It seems the chef simply forgot the apple. Never mind. The goat’s cheese and beetroot salad (£7.50) has generous amounts of both, plus lentils, toasted pumpkin seeds and sweet, roasted walnuts. It’s huge and love has clearly gone into it. THE VERDICT: Despite the pork belly not being as good as our last visit we have no hesitation in recommending The Mucky Duck to either eat or drink in. The food is excellent across the board – restaurant quality at pub prices. We’ll be here as often as we can. WERE WE SUSSED: We’re not sure. The girl behind the bar knew we were from SOURCE but we can’t imagine anyone forgetting an ingredient if they knew they were being reviewed.

In conversation with

Nick ahlmark words and photo by james kendall

Nick Ahlmark makes documentaries for channels as diverse as Vice’s VBS, Al Jazeera and Al Gore’s Current TV. His subject matter is equally varied, taking in art and photography, incest, technology and Vietnamese midwifery. Three years ago Arena magazine declared him one of a new wave of guerilla filmmakers and he hasn’t stopped since. When you make something for VBS do you make it differently to when you’re working for Al Jeezera? Yeah. Vice have their own way to tell stories. They’re not crazy about too much voiceover. If you look at the original 2007 films they’re quite gonzo, a bit rough and ready. But some of it is quite slick now. With Al Jazeera you have to appeal to a global audience, because these films are going out to hundreds of different countries and 230 million households as well as online. You have to think, why would some someone in Kuala Lumpur watching Al Jazeera News be interested? They’re two completely different organisations but they’ve come up around the same kind of time and they’re breaking the mould from traditional terrestrial broadcasting. Have terrestrial documentaries changed recently? They seem a bit dumbed down or sensationalist. I think they’re always changing. People like Channel 4 and BBC have remits to address the issues of the day but also need to get ratings as well. I think there’s some good stuff out there. I really liked My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding because it takes you into another world, another community that’s under-represented and has a negative stigma, but does it in quite an irreverent and accessible way. But you do hear from other filmmakers about having to give their film a silly title, or make it celebrity-led. It would be hard for me to get the films I make for Al Jazeera – observational documentaries about characters or stories in some far-flung corner – on British television. How do you come up with the subjects of your films? Some of them are stories that I have found off my own bat and some of them have been led by the broadcaster. When I made the film about the midwives of Vietnam, that came about from Al Jazeera doing a series on

Page 48

global maternal health and asking me to use my contacts to find a story in Asia. Even if you find something, you have to think about where the outlet is for it, who’s going to fund it, where is it going to slot in. I don’t really want to take the risk of making stuff off my own bat. A lot of people spend years ploughing loads of their own money into making one thing and it might do well on the festival circuit, but who else sees it after that? How long do you spend making your films? It depends on a lot of factors. I’ve just been making these films for Vice that are brand-sponsored. They’re little threeminute portraits of different characters around the world. I’ve been to Japan, Australia, France and I can shoot them in two days. Obviously there’s research beforehand. With the midwives film it probably took me three months to get access, then we spent a week out there prepping, then 10 days in the mountains and then another week doing translations before coming home. And then the edit was about three weeks. So the whole process was about four months, but I was doing other stuff in the lead-up. I generally turn things round quite quickly.

What drew you to making documentary films over, say, fiction films? I went to film school at the University of Westminster and I think all film students should be made to make documentaries because there’s less pressure. I mean, how many good student films do you see? With a documentary you can find characters and people who are much crazier than you could conjure up usually, or much more engaging and interesting. It’s much more visceral. Making even short documentaries really focuses your mind on storytelling. I was thinking about making a narrative film but there are so many elements you have bring. With documentary I could just grab a camera and go off and shoot. But why WEB: nicholasahlmark.wordpress.com documentaries? I think I have ROB HORNSTRA FILM: tinyurl.com/PicPerf a natural curiosity about TWITTER: @storytime_films people and the world.

SIX OF THE BEST

TEEN MOVIES WORDS BY NICK COQUET, JAMES KENDALL

The older you get the less stuff happens to you. Sure, you might have your first mortgage to look forward to but that’s considerably less cinematic than your first kiss, finally standing up to your parents or being ostracised by everyone you know. And that’s why teen movies are so powerful. This stuff matters! At least at the time. To celebrate us hitting teenagedom, here’s our pick of the best films about this powerful time of life.

GREASE

(1978)

Originally a stage musical, Grease’s transformation to the screen retained the hammy performances and saccharine songs to become the biggest film in the world. Classic teen movie fodder of boy meets girl, boy acts like a jerk in front of his mates, girl slams car door on boy’s testicles, are all presented with a goofy charm that allows all the smoking and teen pregnancy issues to almost slip past unnoticed. Sandy and Danny might have had top billing, but for us Kenickie and Rizzo stole the show. And that greasy pockmarked guy with the cool flames on his car. (NC)

THE BREAKFAST CLUB

(1985)

Setting a story during a school detention – purposely the most boring situation known to teenagekind – sounds like a disaster for a movie, but this examination of schoolyard hierarchy does exactly that, and then leaves the ‘action’ in the library for 90 minutes. Perhaps John Hughes’ most heartfelt and affecting narrative, it deals with a powerful post-childhood notion of the person behind the identity. When prom queen Claire explains that she’d cut her new friend, the nerdy Brian, dead in the school corridor next time they met it’s heartbreaking but bravely honest. (JK)

FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF (1986)

If you’re of a certain age then there’s a fair chance that this is you favourite film ever, despite the fact that Ferris is a boy who gets his own way every time. The key is Mathew Broderick’s easy humour and generous charm. On a sunny day Ferris can’t be arsed to go to school, but rather than raiding his parents’

Page 62

CLUELESS

drinks cabinet and watching Cash In The Attic he gatecrashes the best restaurants and a parade float. However, even überfans will have missed the TV series with Jennifer Aniston as Ferris’ pissy sister Jeannie. (JK)

CLUELESS

(1995)

By far the best of the 90s trend for modern reworkings of classic literature (although Cruel Intentions is worth a look too), this take on Jane Austin’s Emma is the only decent film Alicia Silverstone ever made. A heart of gold away from being the archetypal spoilt brat, her ‘project’ to make new girl Brittney Murphy into one of the in-crowd doesn’t quite work out the way she wants. The film’s cleverness – the characters impressively revel in not being dumb – comes out in the oneliners and its use of language. A “Monet” is someone pretty only from a distance, for example. Smart. (JK)

KIDS

(1995)

Aggressively promiscuous Telly’s idea of contraception is only having sex with virgins. What’s already a disturbing set-up is given a knife twist when Chlöe Sevigny’s Jennie discovers that she’s caught AIDS from her single sexual encounter with him. Dazed, she stumbles round New York looking for him as we see Telly pushing his sweet latest conquest into opening her legs for him. Written by Harmony Korine at the age of 18, the accurate way the callous boys talk to each other, plus Larry Clarke’s raw, documentary-like direction, make this even more brutal. The ending is like the anti-Breakfast Club. (JK)

MEAN GIRLS

(2004)

It’s not easy being a teenage girl. In fact Mean Girls, the best high school movie of the last decade, draws convincing parallels between the bitches of teenage cliques and wild animals. Lindsey Lohan’s Cady has been home-schooled in the African bush and her naïvete about how modern American education works shows us the viciousness with new eyes. Before Tina Fey piled up the Emmys with 30 Rock (the seventh best 21st Century sit-com) this script was her calling card. The spiritual sorority sister of Heathers. (JK)
