Broken brighton? we still love you

WAKE UP, don’t give up
The greatest cities in the world are that way because people invest a lot of emotion in them. When James LCD Soundsystem Murphy sang ‘New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down’ he was pushed to do so because he felt betrayed by those in charge of it. And it’s a situation that we find ourselves in here at SOURCE. It seems to be bad news after bad news at the moment, and we’re not sure who to blame. The list of venues falling off the map is growing – most importantly with the seemingly unnecessary loss of The Freebutt – while the number of chain stores is growing beyond sensible levels. What’s to be done? Well, this special edition of SOURCE – with its exclusive, insightful Modern Toss cover – is just the start, just the wake up call. This is where we start to protect what we’ve got, appreciate what’s still here. Because what we have is still the best city in Britain – a feeling backed up by a recent poll. We’re pretty positive people here in the SOURCE secret bunker, the things we love we might be being attacked on all sides, but we know we’ll get through things. This is the turning point.

MEDICINE CHEST OPENS
After over 15 years serving vegetarian cuisine we are desperately sad to hear that the Sanctuary Cafe will be shutting its doors. Taking some of the hurt away is the news that the space will become The Medicine Chest, serving to tickle all alcoholic fancies with a range of fine wines, deliciously inventive cocktails and refined spirits. Anticipate an exquisite and all new range of eats and handpicked entertainment, live music included. The ‘Chest also boasts a late licence, making it an equally good night or day hangout. We’ll still miss the Sanctury though.
PARTY IN THE ‘HOOD
Brunswick Festival, the celebration of the community run by local residents and volunteers returns to Brunswick Square for the 29th time. This year there are two weekends of outdoor fun lined up, with the annual Scruffs dog show, arts and crafts and kids’ stuff on Sunday 15th, bringing the countryside into the city in St Anne’s Well Gardens. Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd see the grassy square turn into a hotbed of culture: music, theatre, dance, beer, world food and loads more.
TALLY-HO TEAM
School friends and Brighton residents Laura and Paul are embarking on the 2010 Mongol Rally. Starting out at Goodwood, the pair, along with other UK, Spanish and Italian contestants, will race across the continent to reach the capital Ulaanbaatar first, following their route of choice. Driving a suped-up one-litre VW Polo, the pair are raising money for Cancer Research UK, The Christina Noble Children’s Foundation and The Neurofibromatosis Association, so dig deep for the daring and notat-all dastardly duo.

DUKE OF YORK’S ROCKS
Brighton thespians, lend us your ears, and Synchronicity productions your talents. To celebrate the Duke of York’s cinema’s centenary this September, the producers are creating a radio-style remake of Graham Greene’s classic novel, Brighton Rock. With the original 1947 film starring Richard Attenborough having put Brighton on the movie map, it seems quite fitting to relive the magic with a live performance. Original film clips will be screened behind, as a seven-piece jazz band orchestrate the piece. Email david.battcock@yahoo.com for more details.

So, some of you may be aware of Brighton’s newest and most elusive festival, hosted by Playgroup. All the talent is homegrown, plus some Playgroup favourites, with over 60 acts and DJs set to play over two stages. We’ve heard a rumour that Flash Bang Band may be playing, but that is all we know at this stage. Join the adventurous 1,000 on a mysterious bus ride to the secret festival site. MISS SARANDON’S PING-PONG SOCIAL CLUB
With London’s Ping-Pong Parlour having just opened and table tennis clubs a firmly established part of the New York hipster scene, the arrival of the world’s alt-est sport in our fair city seems overdue by minutes. Starting on Saturday 7th at The Brunswick, Miss Sarandon’s Ping-Pong Social Club provides you with the chance to don your best sports-casual, enter a tournament or just have a shits-n-giggles knock around. If this isn’t enough, the soundtrack will be provided by top bands Shock Defeat! and Yokoko, the ace DJ Bugs Raplin, and live commentary from two chaps called Chris.
FOGG’S
It’s probably not too contentious to say that residents of Seven Dials area have never been spoilt for choice when it comes to bars that you might actually want to go to. With the opening of Fogg’s though, things are now different. With a new outdoor smoking area, fresh décor and free wi-fi, the place is now unrecognisable from its previous incarnation as the awfully named Rat & Trumpet. They’ve even got a popcorn machine, so if you live nearby give it a whirl.
BOHO GELATO
Everybody likes ice cream, right? This gem of a boutique, nestled a few doors along from the Fishbowl and the Mock Turtle tearooms, sells a stunning 24 different types of ice cream. Handmade on the premises by proprietor Seb – and including toffee apple, mojito, chili chocolate, white choc cheesecake, and classics such as pistachio, vanilla malt and strawberry sorbet – there’s definitely a flavour to suit every palette. Find a flyer to get three for two, yum.

BEATS UNITED
Despite various closures of sorts, check out Jam’s newest club night. Launching on Friday 13th, Beats United brings together a mix of live acts (yes, live music still exists in Brighton, just about) and DJs. Starting it all off in true hip hop style is Blak Twang and the Rottonstra Family, Million Dan and the Dappa Crew plus reggae DJs to be announced, all for the advanced price of £5. What a bargain.
LA CAVE A FROMAGE
Coming soon to Western Road is none other than London’s finest proprietor of cheese, the seductively-titled La Cave A Fromage. Foodies can rejoice at the unrivalled selection of British farmhouse cheeses, some being exclusive to La Cave too. The finest cheese accompaniments will also be in bountiful supply, with a fine charcuterie (that’s meat counter to you and us), artisan breads and fine wines for that perfect picnic. Heaven on a cracker.
FARMERS MARKET
‘Food, glorious food, locally-sourced farmers’ produce’ will be the chant du jour when North Road’s Farmers Market opens on Saturday 14th. Put together by the owners of Farm Cafe down the road, we can all delight in shopping for fresh, Sussex-grown fruit and vegetables, along with dairy, fish, meat, game... the list is endless. If you’re not a fan of cooking though, pop down anyway for lunch and a coffee at the Farm kitchen, all cooked with the produce on sale. Buying local has never been easier.
FIRE FLY TATTOOS
Fire Fly are a brand new studio in the heart of Brighton, located in Kensington Gardens above Reload clothing. The artists are friendly and relaxed – you can chat about your ideas and they’re more than happy to sit with you and design anything that comes to your head. The studio is completely sanitary and fully licensed by the local council. Walk-ins are welcome and appointments can be made in advance. Discounts with a flyer or a copy of SOURCE.

TREVOR MOSS & HANNAH-LOU
Prince Albert Thurs 5th
One half of a special Loose Music double bill at the Prince Albert, highly rated husband and wife duo Trevor Moss & Hannah-Lou have been gaining plenty of plaudits of late. They’re continuing the rich heritage of classic English folk music – think Fairport Convention or Dylan at his most reflective and you’ll have some idea what to expect. Completing the line-up, support comes in the form of some pastoral folk and Americana from the West Country courtesy of newest Loose signing and Drift Collective main-man The R.G Morrison. (JK)
BOSS KITE •
Hector’s House Fri 6th
Boss Kite is a Brighton-based pioneer of the electro movement known as UK skweee. Originating in Sweden and Finland, skweee combines minimalist synths and basslines with r’n’b, funk and soul rhythms, and has recently influenced dubstep artists such as Rusko, Joker and Zomby amongst others. With a definitely slinky, sexy take on the genre and a fat bass injection, Boss Kite is giving UK skweee its own distinct identity. If you want to be part of an exciting, burgeoning scene, this is the place to be tonight. (RH)
KENELIS
Hydrant Sat 7th
Loyal to the queercore circuit, Farnborough alt-rockers Kenelis make two appearances at Pride today: first on the Women’s Stage in Preston Park, and then at their own party at The Hydrant. Their post-grunge melodics (see free download single ‘Sick’) should fit in fine in the pub this evening, where their guest DJ is firebrand Big Brother contestant Shabby, fresh from performing with her own band Voodoo Hussy in the park that afternoon. Pride waverers may wish to note there’s lesbian mudwrestling going on upstairs. (DL)

WOLF GANG
THE NUNS
Hope Sat 7th
This is, amazingly, an all-woman, six-piece tribute to The Monks: the 60s GIs-in-Germany garage band whose repetitive, overdriven nuggets became an international cult (not least with The Fall, who covered them again and again). Following The Monks’ tonsures and cassocks image, The Nuns perform in habits, only slightly concealing their identities as various former Headcoatees and Mambo Taxi veterans. Riot grrrls down for Pride may be pleased to hear that the very wonderful Debbie Smith (Echobelly, Curve, Nightnurse) is also a Nun. (DL)
WOLF GANG
Audio Fri 13th
You have to tick a lot of boxes from day one in order to get noticed in the music industry these days. Gently epic indie freak Wolf Gang managed it just right. His first step was to get initial backing from the Neon Gold label, who consistently prove to be the tastemaker to the tastemakers. He followed that up with an online buzz so loud it would register on the Richter scale. Finally he knocked out timeless pop tune after timeless pop tune and the major labels dutifully wet their quills. (TR)
BRIGHTON RUMBLE – RUMBLE RECORDS SHOWCASE Concorde 2 Sat 14th
Since the demise of the Engine Room, Rumble has moved upmarket somewhat to the Concorde for their showcase of Rumble Records bands. Dave Mumbles and Lucky Phil host Jessie & The Orbits, Kansas City Cryers and Knocksville, with guest DJs spinning rockabilly, rock’n’roll and blues bop. An added bonus comes in the shape of Modesty DJs in the front bar, with 60s, northern and garage grooves. It’s mods, it’s rockers, but the only fight should be to get a ticket. (NC)

JOHN BLEK & THE RATS
THE TELESCOPES
Here’s a show to take a chance on if you’re up for a guaranteed Saturday night hoedown. Rounding off the UK leg of a tour in support of their debut single, the Rats will be bringing the hardknock attitude of bottle living in Southern Ireland to our own south coast for the first time. But while the music might be the spirit of Ireland with a mixer of their American folk forefathers, this is a night for those who take it neat with a stamp of the foot on the floorboards. (NC)
Back in the day, it was all baggy flares, long fringes and even longer faces around these parts. My Bloody Valentine ran the government, Ride had no defence and Jesus & Mary Chain were, controversially, on drugs. Meanwhile, the Telescopes headed up our fledgling space programme, issuing intergalactic anthems to the stars rather than fucking about with technology and satellites like the phoney Americans. With the band now back down to earth, playing soppy indie to UK shoeboxes, NASA clearly has a lot to learn. (BG)

THE LOWLAND HUNDRED Prince Albert Sat 14th
Experimental pastoral duo The Lowland Hundred are breaking out of their Aberystwyth ‘exile’ for this year’s Green Man Festival, and play a warm-up show at the Albert this afternoon for their label bosses Victory Garden Records. Mixing field recordings with strung-out song structures, their album ‘Under Cambrian Sky’ helps develop a hauntological strain of never-never folk music. Acoustic guitar instrumentalists -a+M are an unexpected, welcome addition to the supports. (DL)
EASY STAR ALL STARS Concorde 2 Tues 17th
You might not know it listening to ‘Climbing Up The Walls’ but ‘OK Computer’ has elements that are perfect for reggae – strong melodies, intense dynamics and trippy soundscapes.” So says Michael Goldwasser, who produced and arranged ‘Radiodread’, the New York band’s reworking of Thom and co’s landmark 1997 album, which followed 2003’s self-explanatory ‘Dub Side Of The Moon’. Expect to see Mrs SOURCE, who loves reggae, down the front for tonight’s encore of ‘Rockafella Skunk’, their special tribute to Brighton. (BG)

THE BESNARD LAKES Freebutt Fri 20th
‘The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse’ proclaimed the band in 2007, only to then contradict themselves on their latest album by insisting ‘The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night’. Clearly, there is an identity crisis at the core of this group. Which is hardly surprising, given the fact they are a bold, brave blitz of Canadian indie rock from Montreal, Canada, centred around a husband and wife. But make no mistake, their explosive symphonic roar could put out any Arcade Fire. (BG)
THE LOW ANTHEM Komedia Weds 25th
How many more American bands must take the ancient, weary format of guitar music and imbue it with mystery and moonshine before we give up? Last year, the Rhode Island quartet issued their second album, ‘Oh My God, Charlie Darwin’, a wistful, blood on the tracks and whisky on the brain slow-burner, glowing with melancholic thirst, endless highways and barroom balls. We were seduced and the rest of the world will surely follow. “OMG, The Low Anthem!”, as the kids say outside Rounder. (BG)

SOURCE is not one to blow our own trumpet too often. That’s what Mrs SOURCE is here for. However, it would be a disservice not to, once again, proclaim the monochrome, urbane sounds and sheer unadulterated style of Brighton natives Mirrors. For all their serious expressions, Kraftwerk robotics and cold, cool calculation, this is a group that recognises the waterfall of emotion before their fingertips. Everyone knows how good New Order, Depeche Mode and OMD were. No-one can say the same about this band. Yet. (BG)
Zola Jesus
Freebutt Tues 31st
After wowing all and sundry at SxSW, 2011 is to be Zola Jesus’ year for the taking it would seem. Much fawned over/lauded in the hip (and not-so-hip) press, her sound perfectly straddles weirdo electronic ambient landscapes, singer songwriter lamentation and catchy no-wave noise. Her first trip to Europe was as the support for Fever Ray on her tour, and the match-up is pitch-perfect. At the tender age of 21, this Texan may be sonically bleak, but her future’s bright. (MB)
AT THE EDGE OF THE SEA FESTIVAL
EDGY, BY THE SEA. JOB DONE. Words by Nick Coquet
Concorde 2, Sat 28th 3-10pm Twenty years ago The Wedding Present hit home because their songs were all about splitting up with your girlfriend. All of them. Well, except ‘Kennedy’ which was about Jimmy Carter, or something. Now all their fans are happily married and more likely worried about their son’s girlfriends. But no mind – they’re still gruff and noisy, and have some great songs (mostly about…well, you know). Bandleader David Gedge is back this summer with another Edge Of The Sea festival with his band of indie stalwarts, their associated offshoots and some local crowd pleasers. Kicking off with an acoustic set from Cinerama, Gedge’s other band, the night features sets from The Ukranians, Klee, Sharks and Persil, ending with The Wedding Present doing an end-to-end of their signature ‘Bizarro’ album. Peppered between the sets are acoustic performances from Darren Hayman (ex-Hefner), band bassist Terry de Gastro, guitarist Paul Dorrington as Rose Leaf Miner and Brighton’s own Half Sisters. There will also be custom short story readings from Short Fuse, all on a Wedding Present theme, and music from DJ Rocker. As an awayday for the committed or merely curious, this is a perfect opportunity to get some sun on your back as the fest spills out onto the beach with plastic cups and picnics. Check the Facebook page at tinyurl.com/edgeofsea.

Crooked Mountain, Crooked Sea they ain’t straight-up post-rock WORDS BY THOM DAVIES Photo by oleg pulemjotoV
Post-rock four-piece Crooked Mountain, Crooked Sea have covered a lot of ground since they began playing shows last year. Their sound is ever evolving, taking postrock and making it poignant, relevant and interesting again. Complex rhythms and intelligent lyrics sung with agitated, shouty vocals lead to far flung comparisons, ranging from Cursive for their similarly narrative songs to the restrained rage of Fugazi and At The Drive In. Already a favourite of BBC 6Music’s Tom Robinson, Crooked Mountain, Crooked Sea are destined for great things. What kind of bands did you grow up watching? Dave: Having always lived in Brighton, none of the bands I grew up watching were similar to us in the slightest. Until I joined I could never really find anything I liked on the Brighton music scene, I guess I was looking in the wrong places. As soon as I met these guys though they started dragging me to gigs unwillingly and then eventually I started finding bands that were actually quite good and had their place on the scene here.
Sean: I don’t want to speak for Dave but, I’m pretty sure Dave and I don’t know anything about post-rock, we have all these other influences from other bands that we like to listen to, and I suppose they reflect the style we bring to our songs. I’ve always mainly been into electronica and IDM myself, I didn’t really go to gigs before I joined the band, I was all about going to clubs but that’s all changed now. How did the band end up in Brighton? Andy: Me and Steve both moved to Brighton to start a band individually, Dave our bassist is from Hove, and Sean moved here for university, so we all met up with each other about a year ago. I grew up quite close to Brighton and went to gigs here quite a lot when I was younger. I suppose Brighton’s always been notorious for its music scene. You’ve played quite a few shows in Brighton, especially when you first started out, what’s your favourite venue? All: Hector’s House. Steve: The sound guy Jack’s great, it’s the best live sound we’ve had, I think. Sean: There’s always a good crowd of people in there because the gigs are usually free, and it’s always locals that you play to. Dave: The promoter at Hector’s really supports local music, he puts local bands’ EPs on sometimes in between bands playing at the shows.
Some people would say that post-rock is a bit of a staid genre these days having gone through so many phases, why do you persist in that scene, what makes you different? Andy: I wouldn’t particularly say we’re a post-rock band. Steve: I’d say we’re more post-hardcore to put a name to it, or you could even say post-punk because it kind of fits in with that too. The thing is that we all like different music, we all call our What other local bands have you played shows with that band by a different genre you’d recommend? anyway and we all take Andy: We’re friends with a band called different inspirations and Illness who we really like, we’ve also bring it to our songs. played a few shows with Everyone To Andy: I still kind of see it The Anderson, who are great. Hold Your LIVE: With Amateurs at Hector’s House, Thurs 19th as just writing songs, Horse Is have to get a mention too. EP: ‘I Watched It From The Roadside’ EP out Mon 16th and they just end up We’ve played quite a few shows and a WEB: myspace.com/crookedmountaincrookedsea sounding a bit like tour with them earlier this year, they’re that... fun to gig with.

Life Fri 6th
While he might have only been in the spotlight for a year or so (but what a bright light!), Mr Orbison Jr has lived behind the decks since he was 13 when his uncle, d’n’b legend Ray Keith, introduced him to jungle and garage. So, basically, he knows what he’s doing. Though he’s lumped in with dubstep he’s really got more to do with deep house, coming on like a Detroit version of Matthew Herbert. If you’ve read any interviews with any dance producers recently you’ll know that his own records have his peers wetting their knickers, so expect pure intricate quality all the way through his set. It’s a very exciting time right now for Tom and Pat – new direction, new label, new blog and more. If you missed their ‘Ultimo’ track a couple of months ago you might think that they’re still on the electro thing (they gave up breaks years ago, of course) but actually they’re heading up the incoming 90s house revival. The next single features El-P and in the meantime they’ve remixed Gorillaz. Last time we spoke to them Tom was doing the DJing while Pat worked at home. As this is a hometown gig maybe we’ll get a rare return to dex’n’fx then. Expect it to be jackin’ anyway. (JK)

It’s a good day’s work when you come up with the idea of a three-day festival in the Gladstone pub down on Lewes Road and the name Gladstonebury pops into your head. For a start the crew behind this yearly event are aiming to raise £1,000 for Hove based charity, Whoopsadaisy, who help kids with cerebral palsy lead a more independent life. But no one wants to hang around a pub feeling worthy – is it going to be any fun? Damn straight. The line up is really impressive, with JFB, Geometri, Nomark and many others on the decks while New Groove Formation, The ASBOS and Zora & The Tatsmiths take to the stage. We’re intrigued by The

Tonight is flagged up as 30 Years Of Good Times which, is exactly what you want from Sir Norm. His Notting Hill mix up and throw down parties are beyond legendary – even the Queen gave him an official thumbs up. Soulful, funky, proper dancing music, the selection is serious but the atmosphere is anything but trainspottery. After three decades there will be some great tunes – we’re hoping for that old bootleg of Hall & Oates ‘Man Eater’ over the beats of Jeru’s ‘Ya Playin’ Yaself’ that he used to play 10 years ago (before the mash up era ruined that sort of thing by overkill of course). JUDGE JULES
The Honey Sat 28th
Although we had a run-in with Judge Jules that has led us to finally give in to a long-held feeling that he’s a cast iron fucking prick, there’s no denying that this is a great booking for the Honey Club that ought to be absolutely roadblocked. The only thing is that now we can’t say a nice word about him. Still, we thought you guys would want a heads up that he’s in town since he’s on Radio 1 and does the insanely popular Judgement Sundays in Ibiza. Have fun without us. (JK)

Aiming to invoke the same hedonism they started their own nights, quickly heading back to the Ministry. And now, after 15 years, they’re here in Brighton, bringing their dancers, visuals and – of course – live percussion. STICK IT ON 10TH BIRTHDAY ALL-DAYER • King & Queen Sun 29th
In a city where club nights often change with the tides, it’s reassuring to see Stick It On reaching such an important milestone. This all-dayer sounds messy already. Shogun Audio hosts their head man, Brighton-bred Friction. Propping up the bill are Nero, who’ve been shaking up both the d’n’b and dubstep scenes over the last couple of years with tunes like ‘Act Like You Know’ and ‘This Way’ featuring Alana, and Noisia whose ‘Machine Gun EP’ got remixed by Spor, Amon Tobin and 16 Bit – the latter rework being total sonic annihilation. There’s a real energy to the drunkenness – maybe it’s the high you get off cocktails, maybe it’s the pop-meets-house music policy. The added bonus of the terrace makes this a great summer session, with cool air to calm down all that dancing. Lads be warned, Bastard Pop is full of girls – really full of them – if you can deal with that. Ladies be warned, the mojitos can run out quickly. Apart from that, there’s no complaints.
A few years ago midweek nights used to be about underground dance music or indie, but now pop rules the roost. If you want to launch a new night there’s some tough competition and you want to be doing something Jay-Z ‘Big Pimpin’’ different. ‘Something For The Weakened’ is a clever title – do you feel rave damaged? Not really; maybe a little rave weary sometimes? But that’s the time to slap yourself round the face with some hot new music, which there is never a short supply of, regardless of what the doom-sayers would have us believe.
They both have great dance cultures but what’s the difference between Brighton and Nottingham? I lived in Notts for ten years but I’m originally from Louth in Lincolnshire (big up). Brighton and Notts are similar in a lot of ways, words by james kendall like the people, which is why I stayed in Notts for ten years, and why I subsequently moved down here. It’s nice not reading about shootings every couple of days, but then again, Purism is all well and good but things get more exciting I’ve bought the Argus once in three years, and that was for the when you mix them up, as Michael Morph has done on his free World Cup wallchart. ten-years-coming debut album. in a good way. I’ve been told there is definitely some kind of ‘vibe’ running through it, but I can’t see it myself. You’ve got to remember though, that this is my first album in 10 years of producing all kinds of music – albeit intermittently – so it’s kind of a summary of everything I’ve been into in the last 10 years, dance music wise. How did the hook up with Yo Majesty come about? Deekline was doing a mix for me a while back, and he often gets a vocalist involved when being commissioned to do remixes, and asked if we’d be interested in getting them on the track, and I was bang up for it because I’d been caning their ‘Club Action’ track. So he did the mix, got them to record a vocal for it from Florida; meanwhile I was doing another mix of the track myself,
Page 24
Who have been supporters of your tracks? Quite a cross section. Laurent Garnier, Slam, James Lavelle, Groove Armada, Freq Nasty, Dave Spoon, Hyper for a start. A techno remix I did recently was even liked by Pete Tong. He used to officially start the weekend, but now I think he just carries Annie Mac’s headphones and does a bit after she’s gone. Get Tongy back from 7pm. He shouldn’t have to be up that late at his age. What’s next? A few remixes in the bag and on the go; next one out is Heavy Deviance ‘Day To Day’ on Stop/Start Recordings. And a single with remixes, probably ‘Let’s Spend Money’. Oh, and an album launch party next month, followed by a massive hangover.

isolation
FILM: ISOLATION
(WITH LIVE SOUNDTRACK) Duke Of York’s Sun 1st Whatever your views on whether we should be at war with the various peoples we’re currently rucking with, only the most callous have anything but respect and sympathy for the soldiers themselves. So, the fact that a quarter end up sleeping rough on their return to civvy street is a shocking and emotive subject, making Isolation a highly charged documentary from the off. The film is balanced with poetic photography and a more positive second half, but even before the live soundtrack from the director, this ought to leave a mark on you. (JK)
THEATRE: STEEL MAGNOLIAS Little Theatre Tues 3rd – Sat 7th
The 1989 film version of this story of Louisiana women – which sported a DVD cover with Julia Roberts doing her best impression of a bulldog chewing a wasp, Sally Field cackling like a housewife on the brink of breakdown and Dolly Parton donning a hairstyle Marty McFly might not fall for – would hardly register in a video shop forage, let alone get rung up at the tills. The stage version is less hateful, more witty and tragic, confirmed by its recent successful debut on Broadway. (BM)

EXHIBITION: BUNKER BEAUTIFUL Grey Area until Sun 8th
Given that it fits both words in the title, the ever-beguiling, resolutely atypical hidden cavern that is the Grey Area is perhaps the only place a project describing itself as “a makeover show in an underground shelter” could have been held in. The project aims to use sleights of light and sight to make visitors respond to the space, turning the rooms into projected mirrors. In a setting which could cause ants claustrophobia, we can only hope we like what we see. (BM)

His work takes cues from both Jenny Holzers’ Truisms – a series of public space signage bearing loaded and unexpected slogans and opinions – and formally recalls Gerhard Richter’s paintings of photographic and light aberrations; transposing the visual tick of one media into another and embracing the resultant incongruity. That’s the costume budget blown. (BM)
EXHIBITION: LIDIA DE PEDRO Ink_d until Sun 22nd
A much-anticipated return for Ink-d’s finest Spanish gem following the first solo display of her intricate, flamboyant and feisty silkscreens at the gallery last summer. EXHIBITION: A FINE LINE Fabrica until Mon 30th
We defy anyone to traipse past the cathedral doors of Fabrica at the moment and not wonder how and why those steel curves of white are arching across the gallery like pylon spider webs. They’re the brainchild of Frederic Geurts, a 3D physics obsessive who has rarely exhibited outside of Belgium and deals in fragile, delicately balanced architecture. Part of a collaboration between Fabrica and galleries in France and Belgium, Geurts’s quest, he says, is “a search for the tipping point – the moment of almost falling over.” (BM)

ART JANE HILTON: DEAD EAGLE TRAIL Crane Kalman, Kensington Gardens until Sun 29th WORDS BY NICK COQUET
No one’s a cowboy anymore. Kids don’t re-enact gunfights at the OK Corral with cap guns and apart from a brief resurgence with Brokeback Mountain, you could be forgiven for thinking it had all gone forever. Well, like Clint himself, consider yourself unforgiven. There remains, deep in the heart of Texas, a generations-old tradition of cowboys, cow punchers, horse whisperers. These are professions whose fundamental disciplines remain as they were centuries ago, so unsurprisingly their practitioners are similarly unchanged from the iconic representations we grew up with.
Page 28
London-based photographer Jane Hilton has had a longstanding love affair with rural America, culminating in this dramatic collection of 21st Century cowboy portraits. Away from the hackneyed lassos and spurs-in-the-sunset scenarios of traditional depictions, Hilton introduces something of a gender challenge in capturing her subjects in their most intimate surroundings – their homes and bedrooms. Here the weatherbeaten harshness of their daily reality is juxtaposed against elegant soft furnishings and tender mementos of their own professional and cultural heritage. It’s a stunning collection in terms of evocative portraiture, as well as a reassuring confirmation that despite the relentless march of progress, some things never change.

Pride is as much a Brighton institution as sticks of rock, and shares many of its delicious pink and sticky attributes. It should come as no surprise to newcomers to our fair city that the world-renowned gay capital of Britain hosts this definitive LGBT celebration twice a year, and that we do it so much better than anywhere else. The main emphasis has always been the parade and the party in the park, although there are many less high-octane events going on raising money, awareness and a sense of community in this, Pride’s 18th birthday year.
THE PARADE
This year’s theme is Pride And (No) Prejudice and sees 55 entries from local community groups, businesses and national companies, Sussex Police, the RAF and fire service as well as charities including the Terence Higgins Trust, MindOut and Brighton & Hove Switchboard. The floats will be joined by thousands of whistle-blowing individuals making the annual pilgrimage to the Pride Mecca of Preston Park. Setting off from Madeira Drive at 11am, the route snakes around town taking in the Kingsway, West Street, the Old Steine and London Road, with legions of spectators lining the streets along the way.
PARTY IN THE PARK
Pride regulars were dismayed at the end of the event’s relationship with Wild Fruit, but Revenge have pulled out all the stops to bring a top bill to suit all tastes. Local hero DJs The Freemasons, with Steve Pitron, headline the 5,000-capacity dance tent, with a live set from Cass Fox. For the locals, who apparently only make up half of Pride’s audience, we have more Brighton DJ talent including Dulcie Danger, John Byrne, Verity Mayes, Lee Harris, Jonesy and Richard Jones. For less nn-tss-nn-tss-nn-tss banging sounds there’s a Revenge Pop Tent with alternative and indie from Boogaloo Stu, Fifilicious and Louise C and the Revenge Pop Allstars. All artists are performing without a fee to help keep Pride a free event, and the bars contractor Club Revenge are donating all profits to Pride and local university LGBT societies.

Brugal, the Dominican Republic’s No.1 selling rum and the only rum distilled, matured and bottled on the island, has recently been launched in the UK. Brugal Anejo is a premium blend of aged rums that have matured in American white oak casks to produce a beautiful amber liquid, with a subtle woody aroma and caramel smoothness for a well-rounded palate. Brugal Extra Viejo meanwhile uses a blend of more mature rums and has a dark amber colour with an accentuated aroma of wood, a hint of spice and an exceptionally smooth finish. All the ingredients are actively sourced from local farms maintaining Brugal’s island provenance. Please enjoy Brugal rum responsibly.

CRITIC
WORDS BY NICK COQUET, MATT BARKER LYDIA STOCKBRIDGE
SINGLE: ABSENT ELK • Let Me Know (Amazon)
As city reporters on Brighton’s many musical excursions, it’s sometimes difficult to get a national picture of our bands – unfortunately it’s often because there simply isn’t one. Not the case with Absent Elk – we’ve heard them on Jonathon Ross, Dermot’s a big fan after hosting a live session, and it’s not hard to work out why. This is a band for whom the term indie seems too reductive, such is the expansive sound and effortless scaling of anthemic heights they achieve with each successive release. Various radio edit and instrumental versions on our promo CD suggest they have serious ambitions beyond our city walls – with absolute justification. (NC)
EP: ALBATROSS •
A Kind Of Folk (myspace.com/freethebird) Knowing Albatross’ gestation, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to hear how fully formed their first EP sounds – they’ve been opening for Mumford and Sons all round Europe, the USA and beyond for many months now. Unlike the Mumfords, you won’t find a country twang in Albatross’ kind of folk. The slice of Americana present here owes more to the classic sound of the late sixties/seventies folk rockers like Bread. Also like those bands, the delivery is deft without falling into virtuosity. As and when the UK’s Woodstock happens, Albatross really should headline. (MB)
DEMO: A MAN CALLED MARCUS • Body Building (myspace.com/amancalledmarcus)
In the wake of the international success of Jack Johnson, a zillion men
Page 34
with tales of amorous disappointment and woe have taken to speculative strumming. This minimal style of arrangement is always the easiest to capture, but its relative accessibility for the everyman can mean some sieving of the diamonds from the silt. Marcus here manages to shine, happily, with stylistic nods to Mr Johnson while stretching the narrative well beyond the hackneyed failsafe themes of love and loss. As a homemade demo this definitely hints at the standout, once some production edge smoothing has been employed. (NC)
EP: THE BEAUTIFUL WORD •
Mystery Pop (myspace.com/ thebeautifulword) Much of what we review falls under some kind of flowery folk umbrella – hey, there’s a lot of it about. But it’s been a while since we’ve heard such a true exponent of the genre, vocally at least, as The Beautiful Word. Emily and Megan create definitive dictionary definitions of folk harmony, while their backing steers the sound towards contemporary and easygoing pop. It’s a bright package, nicely produced and packaged, which serves as a promising calling card for a sustained career. (NC)
DEMO: STEVIE BECKS •
(myspace.com/stevie.becks) Twenty-year old Stevie has a background in academic performance at college, and is now concentrating on writing and recording her first album. It’s clearly early days but the song craft and recording quality exhibited across her MySpace tracks sound like the work of a far more seasoned hand. There’s a poignant and optimistic charm about her tale of coming out in ‘Look At Me Now’ – indeed across the entire playlist there’s an impressive emotional maturity and the natural songwriter’s avoidance of cliché. Her dad’s apparently warned her about how hard it’s going to be, we’re happy to reassure him. (NC)
SINGLE: BLOOD RED SHOES • Heartsink (V2)
It seems ages since we last had BRS on our cover, and a cursory glance through the SOURCE underground bunker archive says yes, it was April 08. It can certainly take nonBrightonians a while to catch on to our bands, but hopefully this will see off the doubters for good. A DFA1979 bass workout vies with some seriously caustic guitar, belying the song’s basic 4:4 pop skeleton in an infectious contradiction

ALBUM: BUCKET-JOY • Worth The Weight (myspace.com/bucketjoy)
Having introduced you to Bucket-Joy in February via their demos, it’s good to see some proper finished product so soon. We aren’t alone in using superlatives like brooding, epic and moody about them; it’s a lofty ambition to pull off when you’re not swathed in dry ice on a Pyramid Stage but on record at least this breathes a similar atmospheric air to the Radioheads and Talk Talks that have clearly informed its make-up. It’s an outstanding production, even more pointedly so for a self-release. Get it in Rounder and Resident for a fiver. (NC)
ALBUM: JC HARNELL • CTLG (myspace.com/jcharnell)
A conceptual film composer with some pedigree (Gramps did the original Incredible Hulk TV soundtrack in the 70s), JC has heard his work at Cannes and Tate Modern. Following some critically acclaimed soundtrack work of his own, JC is finally releasing his debut long player. Independent of visual props, this is moody synth-based fare from the get go, driving rhythms and what sounds like a hangar full of dusty old Korgs and Wasps. There’s some vintage William Orbit going on as well as some Tangerine Dream maybe, but the overall impression is quite original. (NC)
EP: CROOKED MOUNTAIN CROOKED SEA •
I Watched It From the Roadside (STA) I Watched It from the Roadside, their third release, is an accomplished-sounding record. Whilst still retaining the rawness of earlier EP’s, C.M.C.S have created their best record to date. From the more arresting, aggressive sounds of ‘They Don’t Mean Anything’ to the introverted, melancholy
www.brightonsource.co.uk/REVIEWS
of ‘Out In The Dark’, C.M.C.S display a well-trained ear for complex timings and driven guitar melodies, without being pretentious. Anyone who thinks post-rock is dead should get a copy of this and be proved otherwise. (LS)
SAMPLER: HIT AND HOPE •
(hitandhoperecords.co.uk)
A lavish package with foldout posters and art cards all based around the H&H logo, the Hit And Hope sampler is a fanfare for the label and its artists, pretty much in that order. We haven’t seen the likes of this since the days when people actually bought music to offset the marketing costs. So what of the music? A five-track sampler showcases Naïve Machine and KLIC, both treading similar glitchy, 8-bit ground. The latter’s collaboration with PhilYourFuckingEars is the most approaching a traditional rhythm structure and, for us, the standout track in an introduction of a new label with some oomph clearly behind it. (NC)
SINGLE: THE HORNS FEAT. JO HARMAN • My Own Way (myspace.com/johannaharman)
The ubiquity of plastic horns and cynical strings in the wake of Mark Ronson has muddied the waters a little for the true practitioners of the soul/funk/jazz craft, although when the real McCoy comes along it sticks out like a sore thumb. This previously unreleased gem from the pen of Horns bandleader James McMillan and Amy Winehouse herself is given a timely airing by the latest great Brit hope vocalist Jo Harman. The pedigree of the backing provides this promising voice a perfect frame, the whole package breathing with a pleasing authenticity that’s impossible to fake. (NC)
EP: ILLNESS •
Gifts From God (STA)
A band for whom the White Stripes’ famed sparse arrangement of vocal/guitar/drums was just a bit too busy, Illness steadfastly desist with vocal distraction entirely. What began as a half-finished-sounding band has evolved – via just enough polish – into an irresistible exercise in minimal riffola; rhythm and rage entwined in a powerful embrace. It’s an arrangement that works perfectly over half a dozen songs, where the unmanned mic stand doesn’t draw attention to itself at all. (NC)

DEMO: LOVEPARK • (myspace.com/puritansuk)
Formerly called Puritans, Lovepark have rebranded and are about to commence recording their first album. If this is the base material from which they hope to craft their lasting pop artefact, they’re in pretty good shape. The demos all carry themselves with a definite songwriting authority, and some studio assistance in placing the pleasing instrumentation around the mix should elevate the songs above the merely promising. It’s upbeat, jaunty indie in the classic tradition and we look forward to seeing its inevitable ascension up the pop ladder. (NC)
ALBUM: MARYSIA BAND • Sense (myspace.com/marysiaband)
In the spirit of solidarność, SOURCE welcomes Critic submissions from all walks of our diverse cultural and ethnic mix. Here’s a CD that meets the demands of Brighton’s Polish brethren (that’s folk from Poland, not Mr Sheen and Pledge aficionados). Formed around vocalist Marysia Nowiñska, the band have been punting their unique brand of Polish and Balkan jazz and folk at The Bradshaws pub, and this energetic CD, impenetrable lyrics aside, makes it all sound like a good night out. (NC)
COMIC: BEN NAYLOR •
Die Inbred Chav Scum Die! Die! (benjaminnnaylor@yahoo.co.uk) Jesus, someone having a bad day. The illustrator and storyteller behind Geoff Half-Shark-Half-Octopus has swapped his gentle modern day whimsy for violent fantasy. After the last travelogue, this is England at its worst – spitting in the street, Danny Dyer as a role model, talking in the cinema. Ben sees ‘chavs’ as a plague, like zombies, that we need saving from. When it’s funny it’s very entertaining but there’s an edge of the Daily Mail-reading bigot here. Still, Ben’s not claiming to be looking into the sociological situations regarding the nation’s underclass – he’s just really pissed off at the lack of manners around these days. Mind you, he’s always been an old man at heart. (JK)
ALBUM: SILJE NES
Opticks (FatCat •)
For this follow-up to ‘Ames Room’, Silje Nes appears to have imbibed some elixir of vocal confidence. Her utterly enchanting voice still works in tandem with a wide range of instruments and effects but has come more to the fore than competing as just another sonic component. The result is a far more song-based and vocal-led collection than before, mixing traditional backings with understated electronica to create a compelling album whose every texture is like reclining upon clouds. This is one for dimmed lights and intimate nights. (NC)
Page 36
SAMPLER: VARIOUS: NUMBSKULL HQ • Mission Drive (myspace.com/numbskullhq)
Pitching themselves as an umbrella label dedicated to unearthing great local artists, Numbskull have indeed gathered some brilliant BN postcoded stuff here. A lot of it SOURCE is already familiar with; from the guitar genius of The Valentines and The Sarah Michelles (our personal tips for Radio One playlisting), to the louche summery loveliness of Jennie Cruse and Sparrow as well as the trad indie sounds of Villareal and Heliopause. Numbskull is a lazy major label A&R man’s dream – shut your eyes, stick a pin in the sleeve and keep your job for another year… (NC)
SINGLE: SILVERMAN Can’t Stand The Rain (One4Ho Records •)
As with most things, the most interesting things happening in the monolith of a genre that is dubstep are happening at the fringes. Where dubstep meets semi-techy electronica is where Silverman is honing his shadowy, sinister Bladerunner-esque beats. Using the mournful vocal and drip-drop sample from Ann Peebles’ track of the same name, the wobble in ‘Can’t Stand The Rain’ sounds like a massive industrial turbine in some torrential dystopian deluge. Dark, heavy and relentless. (MB)
FILM: TOM SANDS • Brighton – Die Sonfonie der Großstadt (Substantial)
‘The symphony of the big city’ aims to celebrate Brighton’s cumulative charms, while contrasting the fortunes of typical city residents. A bin man works along London Road, a stressed computer worker bemoans the digital age, a bus driver wants to work in a café because he hates driving and a busker works out her beer budget – all furiously intercut with monolithic flat blocks and random street reportage, the unsettling direction and sound manipulation are sometimes quite Chris Morris’ ‘Jam’ in tone. If there’s any moral message it’s all a bit muddied but it’s nicely put together. (NC)

BRIGHTON’S BUST THE END OF OUR CITY’S INDIVIDUALITY? EVERY LITTLE HELPS… words by nick coquet image by modern toss
On the day that The Freebutt closed its doors to amplified live music we heard more shocking news. The Providence, longtime jumping off point for new BIMM bands, was closing and re-opening as Brighton’s 12th Tesco. This, added to the rumour that Wetherspoons had its eye on the large venue at the start of the North Laine, had us furious. Is Brighton replacing its culture with big business? Who’s actually looking after the city? In order to attract visitors with bulging wallets from outside of town, the city obviously needs to punch a decent weight with its retail offerings. That’s why Churchill Square was built – a day’s shopping under one roof with an obvious chain store overspill into Western Road. That’s kind of fair enough, 250,000 people live here and even we need label goods from time to time. But when it starts to encroach on the areas whose individuality helped make the city’s reputation, well, we start to get upset. ‘Metro’ and ‘Local’-brand supermarkets, the high street enclaves of the outof-town superstores, have long been making a march on the local retailer. The buying power of the PLC simply pummels the family-run corner shop into submission. This is a national disease of course, but Brighton’s culture and quirky outlets are as much a part of its character as dirty weekends, and we don’t think enough’s being done to halt this so-called progress. As rates and rents rise, the inexorable rise of inter-city homogenisation threatens every shop, cafe and pub on our streets. And with a supermarket on every corner, who’s even going to bother going out to drink anymore? Venues such as the Pressure Point, Providence and Barfly could certainly be said to have suffered from the change in licensing laws, while a perceived lack of council support for the Ocean Rooms and the Freebutt certainly didn’t help their particular fates. So venues close and shops fail, all parts of the Brighton landscape gone forever. And queuing up to fill their boots is an endless supply of big name retailers, sometimes so eager to snap up the local trade that they
Page 38
don’t even wait for proper planning permission before they open their doors. This is why Starbucks on St James’s Street is apparently officially a ‘shop’ rather than a café – council usage regulations for the premises protecting the street’s other cafés seemingly meaning nothing. But not everyone just lies down and takes it. Facebook has proved an invaluable tool in gathering support for protests against development, their organisers making impassioned pleas for reason on the TV news. The most vocal in recent times have been the urban gardeners on the proposed plot of Brighton’s 13th Tesco on Lewes Road. Despite Quaker covenants stipulating no alcohol could be sold or gambling take place upon it, in place since the land was first sold, planning permission for yet another Tesco (which would be literally next door to a Co-Op and opposite a Spar) and a betting shop seem to be railroading through local opposition. This is happening all over, of course. Brighton shares many shops with Birmingham, Hove many with Huddersfield. But our charm as a city lies firmly in our diversity. We’re unique and we want to stay that way. It’s what brings people in from outside – not the fact that we’ve got a couple of cheap Wetherspoons or a wellstocked Gap. Some sort of legislative line in the sand clearly needs to be drawn, a line that the tide of corporate retail can’t simply wash away. And this is where you come in. In researching this issue we went to great pains to get some solutions from the council. Try as we might we just couldn’t get answers from Brighton’s councillors, our questions proving either too vague or too specific depending on whom we asked. We know who our MPs are – Caroline Lucas was busy with the impending summer recess of Parliament and we kind of assumed we’d get no joy from the Tories. But these are issues more pertinent to our ward councillors. Know who they are? Nor did we. In fact Brighton and Hove has 54 ward

councillors, spread across the major political parties, and they’re elected to look after your interests. In fact, they’re all hoping to get re-elected next May, and will presumably be doing all they can to end their anonymity with the electorate to get your cross on the ballot paper. As a local magazine with Brighton and Hove at the heart of every word we print, SOURCE is making it our business to get some proper answers. We admittedly didn’t get very far with our questions, but we’re on a massive mission to change that. Voter
apathy simply won’t wash anymore. We want the young people of Brighton to help influence the outcome of these elections, and we want you to form the discussions on which they’re fought. This is our city by the sea, and the people in charge of it are about to come out of the woodwork, sniffing about for your vote. Let’s make it a vote for Brighton, a vote for real, unique, diverse and proper fucking amazing Brighton. You run this city – it’s time to step up. So, is Brighton broken? Well, there’s obviously plenty of sad stuff going on that makes us a bit depressed and weepy. But there’s also loads of stuff about our city that’s unique, inspiring and just plain downright ace. We stuck our hands up like spods in the SOURCE office and wrote these on the blackboard.
20 JAZZ FUNK GREATS
Essentially, XXJFG is the best new music blog there is. For weirdo psyche disco or maverick nu-gaze, these guys have heard it, played it out and already blogged it before the acetate is even dry. Don’t believe us? Check your favourite blog’s blogroll. You’ll find them there.
OUR BARTENDERS (ETC)
Jesus, how cool are our waitress, barmen and shop assistants? Seemingly all hot – or quirky über-hip – they’re working part-time while their blog/band/photography/art hits gold. Not only are they interesting and clever (and hot, did we mention that?) they’re also really good at their jobs.
THE BEACH
Yes it’s made of stones, but that sea air is enough to blow the cobwebs off anyone coming to town. Ultimately it doesn’t matter about all the other things which make Brighton special because
Page 40
hot long summer nights with friends, BBQs, drink and general merriment on the beach are what make life in Brighton all the more brilliant.
HAPPY HOUR AT THE BEES MOUTH
Whoever said money can’t buy you happiness obviously didn’t have £7.50. Because that will buy you three bottles of fruity Belgian happiness from one of the hippest, most happenin’ jazz joints this side of the 1950s. It’s 5.15pm on a Tuesday and we’re drunk. We love you Bees Mouth.
BEYOND RETRO
The heart of the Lanes, yet a hidden treasure – Beyond Retro takes you back to dressing up in your mum’s high heels and gladrags. Not just a vintage store, they often hold gigs for local bands and held a beautiful Alice In Wonderland tea party in March. See also To Be Worn Again and Wolf & Gypsy.
BIRD-CALL WHISTLE BLOKE
No hungover Saturday would be complete without a wander through the Lanes, stuck behind what must be the hottest, stickiest man in Brighton. Clad from head to foot in tweed, carrying a massive sign, and making noises like a Robin on heat, this guy is an ambassador for the phrase ‘does anyone ever buy this crap?’ but we love him anyway.
www.brightonsource.co.uk/FEATURES
BOM-BANE’S
The quirkiest restaurant in town, there’s probably no place that is such a labour of love. Interesting things happen in Bom-Bane’s from in-table entertainment to great live music and comedy. Arthur Brown and Stewart Lee have both played the cosy basement.
BRIGHTON BALLROOM
The Hanbury has had a tough time of it over the last few years but hopefully Proud Galleries can turn it around, having just bought it. They’re doing great stuff in London so fingers crossed, and they’ve saved another Brighton venue from closing. Just remember though, this is Brighton not London guys.
BRIGHTON LIVE
The mere fact that Brighton has enough bands to put on an annual festival of local acts is impressive enough, but that a group of people bother (most giving their time for nothing out of sheer belief in it) is great. Oh yeah, and it’s totally free. Result.
COMMUNION
In terms of the bleeding edge of indie/nu-folk/whatever you want to call it, the So Darn So-run Communion is sufficiently below the radar to feel extra special, but so on the money that soon you’ll only be able to catch their bands in £10 headline slots.
CRANE KALMAN
The exhibitions that Crane Kalman put on aren’t just good, they’re world class. If you want to see great photography it should be your first stop. And then get over to the North Laine Gallery to see the talented locals.
DAVE’S COMICS
Of course they never cared anyway, but Dave’s Comics have garage studios been pushing graphic stories since long before they became fashionable. Not just the place for superheroes, they also have a great range of emotional stories from the likes of Daniel Cowes and Adrian Tomine.
DUKE OF YORK’S
To quote film über-critic Mark Kermode, “Balcony sofas? Cor, you definitely would, wouldn’t you?” After years of sitting in children’s car seats in suburban warehouses, a glass of beer, a sofa, a beautifully projected flick, and the 100year-old housing makes you realise just how good we’ve got it down here.
EDUCATION
Brighton University and City College are right in the heart of the city offering the students of Brighton the opportunity to develop themselves into the new stars of Brighton. Music, arts and design courses run by industry professionals and close links with local employees make this a very cool place to learn.
THE EVENING STAR
Loved by many – it’s home to the best micro brewery in Brighton and has many award winning ales, as well as the widest selection of Belgian beers around. This is no gastro pub, if you look a bit too trendy or act obnoxiously a regular will shout, “There’s no Fosters in here, sonny.”
SAVE THE FREEBUTT CAMPAIGN
OK, so it might have failed, but the swell of support for a venue in danger was impressive. Four thousand people signed the petition – now if each of them
www.brightonsource.co.uk/FEATURES
paid £5 there’d be enough to carry out the soundproofing work. Hello? Anyone still there?
GARAGE STUDIOS
Devoted to the art of photography, often within a commercial setting, no one is doing more for the discipline in Brighton than Kevin Mason and Matt Halls. Crucially they don’t hide their craft, instead aiming to excite and help others by explaining the smoke and mirrors.
GEORGIAN ARCHITECTURE
Following the construction of Prince George’s weekend party pad back in the late 1700s, the architects of the period knocked up a plethora of gorgeous, often beach-fronted housing. You can see the style, with its tall windows and corniced details, from Kemp Town’s Sussex Square to Clifton Hill, to Brunswick Town.
HAND IN HAND
Sure there are a thousand quality boozers in Brighton, but how many of them actually brew their own quality booze? The Kemptown (micro-)Brewery, as housed at the wonderfully teeny Hand In Hand pub, is somewhere you can genuinely try something new. You’ll never drink Kronenbourg or Stella Artois again.
HANDMADE CO-OP
A fine arts and skillful crafts shop with a socialist work ethic – now that’s something you don’t see every day. They showcase the best local artisans’ creations, ranging from pretty and practical to standalone pieces. There’s really no excuse for buying someone a shoddy gift anymore.
HANOVER BEER FESTIVAL
For an area of Brighton that has a quality boozer on every corner (almost literally – try it if you don’t believe us), the annual introduction of a big top, piled high with kegs of the most wonderful beers of every conceivable denomination and regional derivation, is some lovely icing on a well-stocked cake.
THE HYDRANT
The Hydrant, nee The Hare and Hounds, has become a new hub for live music. The venue proper upstairs sees Club Zygotic promotions putting on the most left-of-centre in alternative music; and downstairs you can often find some cheeky ska band playing at the bar.
WORK STARTING ON THE HIPPODROME
It’s going to cost nine million quid to sort out, but apparently the guys behind the Brixton Academy are ready to start work on this decaying venue. The Beatles and the Stones played there, you know.
Page 41

INDEPENDENT LABELS
Independents have always found a home here; from the DIY label I Made This Records to established alt-folkers FatCat, hip hop soul from the mighty Tru Thoughts, or quirky pop-tronica mayhem from One Inch Badge. All of these started small and gained notoriety right here.
INDEPENDENT RECORD SHOPS
With most of the UK’s indie record shops having bitten the dust, it’s good to see the likes of Rounder, Resident, Ape, Edgeworld and Rarekind bucking the national trend and flourishing by really knowing their market. You sure won’t find Daptone 7”s in HMV.
JUICE FM SPECIALIST SHOWS
Every city has its commercial radio stations, and for the most part they all play the same old chart fodder. Not Juice. Even a cursory glance through their long list of specialist shows reveals the kind of roster and playlists that 6Music would love to harvest.
CAROLINE LUCAS MP
The only Green MP in the whole bloody country, Caroline took the Brighton Pavilion ward by storm in the general election, an unprecedented victory for the party and a clear message to the rest of the country that Brighton doesn’t do tactical voting, thanks very much.
MAMMOTHFEST
This group of promoters are hell-bent on supporting the South’s undernourished metal scene. They’re hosting the first ever metal festival the South East has ever seen this September at Hove’s town hall, aiming to put the city on the map as the South East’s metal Mecca.
Page 42
MODERN TOSS
In the whole country there’s no one better at sticking a prick into pomposity and the ridiculousness of life today. Brutally witty, they’ve also developed a unique style that gets them into art galleries. And they did our ace cover this month.
MORGENMUFFEL ZINE
As Brighton Zinefest testifies, there’s a wealth of people with something worth saying living here. A veteran of the scene is Morgenmuffel, an autobiographical zine chronicling the life and issues that are important to its author Isy. Covering punk, veganism, ecology and community, it makes for an insightful and entertaining read.
THE NORTH LAINE
This run of small boutique shops, cafés, bars, galleries and venues in the heart of the city is an essential microcosm of Brighton – alternative, fiercely independent, hip, vibrant and varied, it’s Brighton in a nutshell.
NOT FOR RESALE
Is there anyone in Brighton that has such a need for new music as Meatbreak and Fokkawolfe? Food, air, and demo tapes – that’s what they live on. Their next Penthouse night is on Friday 20th, or keep up with their almost-daily blog.
NUMBSKULL HQ
The corporate music industry’s on its arse, so there’s never been a better time to go it alone. Numbskull is a local management consultancy with A&R, live promotion and PR expertise to help bands do just that, and they’re building a promising roster of artists who you’ll know all about before too long.

OPEN MICS
Music is a reflection of life, and the underground performance scene is where the two meet. Open mic nights are a platform for our views, our aspirations and our expressions. Music, poetry, comedy – all our best talent started out there and Brighton boasts the best in the country.
RADIO REVERB 97.2FM
Brighton’s community radio station is staffed, produced and presented by volunteers from a stifling basement on the Old Steine. Reverb is an unpredictable, gloriously haphazard and eclectic melting pot of ideas, with a keen ear to the ground for diverse emerging local talent, personalities and events.
RAVING GRANDAD
Because no outdoor music event in Brighton would be complete without the grandaddy of raving at the front, throwing some shapes and teaching us young ‘uns a thing or two about how to wear flame print.
REAL TATTOOS
A world away from your standard end-of-pier snake’n’dagger with Chinese symbols designs, Brighton is home to Into You and Magnum Opus, two world-renowned custom shops who will ink absolute individuality under your skin.
THE RECOMMENDER
If you haven’t heard of The Recommender then clearly you’ve never been online. Now part of the influential blog network, Strangers In Stereo, you can often find their postings topping the Hype Machine chart. The live music nights are firing now too.
RED VEG
Where else can you sit people-watching as you tuck into a burger that makes you forget there’s no meat inside? The staff are friendly, flirty and fun and the food is amazing. The spinach and garlic burger is to die for and the fries are never greasy either.
ROAST DINNERS
Alongside a number of excellent fry up cafes, there are dozens of unique and friendly pubs serving perfect Sunday lunch grub. As a consequence, Brighton is not only great for going out on a Saturday night, but it also offers up the perfect hangover cure the next day.
seaFRONT CLUBS
As rammed as they often are at weekends, there’s something undeniably special about the many large clubs located in the Victorian archways under Brighton beach’s promenade. On a
warm summer’s evening there’s nothing quite like hitting the beach and ending your evening in front of a banging al fresco sound system.
STREET PARTIES
From Hanover, the North Laine and Brunswick Square to Ditchling Rise – street parties pop up all over the place. City communities taking time out to get to know their neighbours is catching on nationwide, but Brightonians have been at it for years.
NON-SUPERMARKET SUPERMARKETS
Independent food stores such as Infinity Foods, Bill’s and Taj champion the vegetable and health foods in all their fine forms, as well as giving us an alternative to the big chains clogging up the city centre.
TREACLE & CO
Proof that not everything in Brighton is closing, some things are blossoming like beautiful flowers. This brand new cake shop is going to have your tastebuds sending you a thank you note. Best of all it’s opposite the huge Hove Tesco so you can buy your sugary dinner in here instead.
TUACA
Yes, it’s Italian, but Tuaca is so much a part of the fabric of our city that it’s got its own plaque. Responsible for more crazy ideas and unholy unions than anything else, importantly it tastes better than any other shot. Thanks to Paul and Sammy, the Brightonians who discovered it while snowboarding and started importing it.
UN AUTRE MONDE
Mirrors’ monthly club night at New Hero is doing something genuinely interesting. Pretentious? Maybe, but we see a tongue in cheek as they balance live painting with onion petanque. The best place to see them play live.
VEGETARIAN FOOD
Vegetarians, vegans and even raw foodists have found a stronghold here. Stand-out produce proprietors include Terre A Terre, Manna, Bill’s and Food For Friends, all making a proper meat-forgetting meal from stuff growing out of the ground.
WEST STREET
This long street, running up from the beach is full of those shitty, found-in-every-town, massive chain bars. Why does it make this list, you might ask? Well, it acts as a magnet for all those footballshirt-wearing, drunk thugs and scary hen parties, thus leaving all the really decent bars to the rest of us.

We were immediately drawn to Irate’s standout ensemble. Matching colours to the madly geometric pattern of his shirt so seemingly effortlessly – but then he is head of his own fashion label, M.O.D.U. Never have we witnessed so many shades of turquoise all in one sitting, but it works beautifully; like a mesmerising abstract take on the ocean. He created the bum bag with the cheeky heart logo of his label winking away at us from under its skewed crown; an icon of our times, captured through the lens. Unfortunately we didn’t capture him wearing his signature piece: the tapechain. A graffiti artist as well as fashion designer, Irate customises cassettes, converting something old into something new – but probably not suitable as a wedding accessory. Shirt from “Camden somewhere” “I have a stylist that helps me get inspiration for my own designs. I like to call my personal style Fresh N Funky. Colour-wise it’s always colourful and bright.” Jeans from H&M “They were deadstock, so I got them as I thought, well, you know they were a really good bargain.” Boots from a “rummage” “They’re sort of Dr Martins type of boots. I can’t remember where I got them from. Sometimes I just rummage, I just go through different stores, they might be charity-based, where I just pick things up for really cheap.” Neckerchief from Rokit, Camden “They’re quite good for accessories.” Bum bag from M.O.D.U “Yeh that’s from my label, I designed and make them myself.” Necklace from M.O.D.U “I made those myself as well. My fashion label’s called M.O.D.U, you can find out about us and projects that we have going on at tapechain.com.”
Irate received a bottle of Tuaca for his get-up and go outfit, Tuaca being the perfect summer drink, bringing out the subtle tones of vanilla and citrus when served long over ice with cola. Start chilled – finish responsibly.

CONSUME
IMMEDIATE
34 SYDNEY STREET 01273 603 844 WORDS BY NICK COQUET
In a city where vintage and second-hand shops are everywhere, in order to last 18 years you need to specialise. Immediate has carved a unique niche for itself, drawing in everyone from indie kids, punks, skins and mods to elderly types who appreciate the value of quality British clothing like Church’s shoes and Harris tweeds. Unlike some other outlets that buy randomly from abroad by weight, Immediate’s rails are groaning with handpicked pieces. It’s a labour of love involving countless sources gathered from two decades on the mod, ska and club scenes, to rare charity shop finds and house wardrobe clearance visits. Even rifling through the back of a clobber-packed van outside a pub with a torch, it’s the dedication to quality stock that makes the endless search worthwhile.
Page 46
The shop’s about good brand names with a history; Ben Sherman, Aquascutum, Loake’s, Dunn & Co – classic labels that have been around for years. Clothing that’s well made – if Immediate still have it in good condition after 40 years you can guarantee it’s going to outlast something bought on the high street today. As well as the vintage ranges of hats, suits, shirts and shades, Immediate also run a great t-shirt range, with Studio One, Trojan and Stax nods to the shop’s roots. So if you want a sharp look that sets you apart, get it Immediately.

UNSUNG HEROES 100 PEOPLE WHO MAKE BRIGHTON WHAT IT IS NO.12 ADAM LeROY WORDS BY NICK COQUET
Brighton has been a Mecca for mods since the early 60s, and for the last 18 years Adam and brother Jonathon LeRoy have been tailoring to button-down Brighton’s sharp-suited requirements at Jump The Gun on Gardner Street. Why has mod style remained such an enduring part of British fashion? We’re really just an early 60s gent’s outfitters with a mod angle to it. It’s about the fit, the cloth and the cut. If you’re the right shape for what we do it’s brilliant. You don’t have to be a mod to wear it well, it’s just a suit, a regular outfit that’s cut differently. It’s about dressing well, not necessarily being a mod. John Steed in The Avengers, Michael Caine in Alfie, they weren’t mods, it’s just a cool, well-fitted look. So are they clothes for skinny guys predominantly? A lot of people who do this kind of niche market won’t be as hardcore about it as we are. We won’t manufacture to fit everybody. You can either fit into it or not, we won’t make big baggy shirts so everyone can buy one. Ben Sherman for instance do a slim-fit range, but it’s nothing like ours. Our jackets go up to 48” but the trouser cut is pretty slim. If you can’t get into them you can always buy shoes and a hat... Do you get a lot of trade from outside Brighton? People travel unbelievable distances, we’re really the only proper mod shop left. Merc in London is fine, we’ve known them for 20 years and we started out selling their stuff about 15 years ago – we were the only people they’d wholesale to in the UK. But we gave up because we wanted everything to fit how we wanted, and with no logos on it. We’ve been approached by people like Lambretta saying, this is perfect for you, but we’re a mod shop, it’s not about a label. You do stock some outside labels though? We stock a limited range of Loake shoes, they’re a great shoemaker. Fred Perry – we do a very limited range of what they do. The shirts aren’t what you’d buy on the high street, it’s an M12, made in the UK, a very specific shirt. The fit and the quality are different. Fred Perry is a very traditional shirt, that’s why we stock it, but it has to be an M12. We could sell loads more of what they do, and Ben Sherman target t-shirts, but we’re just not interested. You don’t have very mod hair? I always got stick for having an Elvis sticker on my scooter! Mod’s about doing your own thing, sometimes people say you can’t mix this check with that check but I don’t really care. I sell reasonably serious mod gear but if you want to wear it with a pair of brothel creepers, do what you like...

Secret Eater
Circus Circus
Preston Rd (01273) 620026 Mon-Fri noon-3pm, 6pm-9pm; Sat-Sun 1pm-4pm, 6pm-9pm
THE PLACE: There are plenty of great Thai places in Brighton – Sukhothai, with their two course £5 lunches, as well as The Pond and The King & I – so what makes us rock up at Circus Circus with our stealth notepad? Well, we wanted to head over to the London Road/Preston Park area and there aren’t loads of options after lunch but before the hours that a takeaway seems like a good idea. A lovely day, we think we’ll sit outside – until we realise
THE MEAL: We’re not sure why Thai food is always so cheap, but Circus Circus keep up the value for money that comes with the eastern cuisine. In fact for weekday lunches (noon until 3pm) all main courses are £3.95 if you just want vegetables, or an extra quid for meat, with seafood two pounds more. But is the food any good? Things start pretty well with the tiger prawn tempura (£4.50), four fleshy fingers of seafood, not buried in batter. It’s a shame to drown them in dipping sauce so we shovel them down neat. The Pad Si Oew (£6.50) is as close to Chinese as Thai, but with a thicker, creamier sauce. It stands on the quality of its veg – fresh and crunchy baby sweetcorn, mange tout, broccoli, and cauliflower. The green curry with chicken (£6.50) has a good slow building kick that leaves our tongue tingling nicely with plenty of sauce, soft chicken and a variety of crisp fresh vegetables. THE VERDICT: It all came to just over £20 with drinks, and you can’t really argue with that. You might not walk past other good Thai places to get to it, but Circus Circus is one of the best eateries in the area, and they do take away too. WERE WE SUSSED: We had all the food come out together so, although we weren’t subtle with our camera, it was too late to change anything. So, definitely not.

Lewes Road Community Garden STAND UP FOR YOUR LAND RIGHTS
You don’t have to sit around complaining about Brighton not being the way you want it. Loads of people have got off their arses and are making their voices heard. Sandy Deacon is part of the Lewes Road Community Garden/Say No To Tesco campaign, trying to protect the community garden space from the third supermarket within a 20-yard radius. She spoke to us about how to stand up for what you believe in.
many things on board; we had yoga mornings, elderly afternoons, workshops, planting. Now we don’t have so many plants, the garden looks very bare and barren. It’s been such a beautiful place and it could be absolutely gorgeous if we could purchase it. And we could – Infinity, Lush, various other companies and the local community have all offered to buy small packages of the land – that’s what we’ve got to do. That’s the way forward, but the landowners won’t come back to us. JK: So, what’s next for the campaign? It seems like it’s at a crucial junction. James Kendall: I think a lot of our readers are unhappy about SD: I think we’ve got to re-approach going to the council about the way things are turning out, but don’t know where to start. the planning because we feel there was no proper planning What do you think is the best way of getting your message permission given to this proposed development. If they’re not going to represent us demonstrations. We’ve had two attempts by the bulldozers trying we’re going to go to the people who will – and I think that means to come in and we’ve had peaceful demos to keep them out – no heading back to Labour. If they want our support they’d better violence, no unnecessary action. The police were on our side, start pulling their finger out. they’ve been very good. That’s what we have to do, as well as JK: Do you see what’s going on with the community garden as keeping up public pressure on our councillors. The Greens the war or a battle? People we’ve spoken to at the garden felt like haven’t been very helpful – we expected more and we should it wasn’t possible to stop Tesco building a store but if we all really have the Greens on board helping us out with solicitors and stopped shopping there we could get them to start closing them promoting us – we promoted them after all. SONGS FROM BRIGHTON WORDS BY MATT BARKER, NICK COQUET, JAMES KENDALL
fujiYa & miyagi
While we’re busy putting a reassuring arm around your trembling shoulder, telling you everything’s tickety boo in Brighton, here’s half a dozen reasons why our streets are paved with musical gold.
THE PIRAHNAS ‘TOM HARK’ 1980
‘Boring’ Bob Grover’s sermon from 1980 kind of sums up our feelings of helplessness over Brighton’s current situation – “you have to laugh or else you cry”. Possibly the most widely known song ever to come out of the city, its continued use on the terraces nationwide is testament to its jaunty longevity; indeed a cover version with the bracketed suffix ‘(We Want Falmer)’ by Seagulls Ska entered the charts in 2005 as part of the bid to secure the stadium site for the Albion. Why hasn’t Boring Bob Grover got his own bus front? (NC)
PRIMAL SCREAM ‘COME TOGETHER’ 1991
Primal Scream aren’t a Brighton band, we hear you shout, but for a while they were. And it was their time hitting our town’s acid house parties that led to the genius indie dance hybrid of ‘Screamadelica’. So well does that album mesh that it’s hard to single out a track, but ‘Come Together’ is pretty special. It helps that both versions are brilliant; Terry Farley’s baggy-esque pop single take – all Moseley Sholes horns and riffy guitars – and Andy Weatherall’s dubbed out protest-rave album version. (JK)
BONOBO ‘SLEEPY SEVEN’ 2000
A decade ago chillout wasn’t a dirty word – it was simply emotional downtempo music. A million compilations changed that (by which time Bonobo had proved his music had much more depth), but no one had more feeling in their beats than Simon Green. ‘Animal Magic’, his debut, was a charity shop, crate-digging look inside himself, and ‘Sleepy Seven’ was its gem. A narcoleptic grasp of dreamy vocals, it was the soundtrack to years of late night back-toours sessions. (JK)

THE GO! TEAM
‘BOTTLE ROCKET’ 2005
So you want to make a record that sounds like Sesame Street, with some Double-Dutch skipping rhymes, Sonic Youth guitars and Charlie Brown cartoon piano? Riiiiight… But you know what? It worked. The Go! Team’s debut album from whence this came was a glorious, really-shouldn’t-go mix of pop naïvete and DIY 21st century punk exuberance. Critics agreed – it was nominated for the Mercury in 2005, only to be pipped to the post by Stephen-Fry-in-a-frightwig, Antony Hegarty & his Johnsons. (NC)
FUJIYA & MIYAGI ‘ANKLE INJURIES’ 2006
Despite their nomenclature suggesting an eastern origin, F&M are Brighton through and through, with reassuringly homegrown real names like Steve and David. This song is something of a calling card for the band; certainly in the definitive realisation of their krautrock, electronica and French pop influences but also in the vocal refrain consisting of a repeated mantra of the band’s name. ‘Collarbone’ is the tune the ad agencies clamour for, but its trademark Neu! bass and drums pattern make this is the best example of Brighton via Berlin we’ve heard. (NC)
THE MACCABEES ‘NO KIND WORDS’ 2009
No one saw this coming. Their debut album ‘Colour It In’ was full of lovelorn ditties about the local lido and illicit teen snogs, but when Arcade Fire helmsman Marcus Dravs came on board, our speakers fairly tore themselves a new tweeter. Equal parts a dark lament for a dear friend lost to himself, and a searing rebuke to the unkind words levelled against him, all housed in a tempo-shifting, neo-gloom indie pop guitar joint that the Psychedelic Furs wished they had the emotional intelligence to write.
