embarRass yourself A couple of days before we hit the presses Alexis Petridis – possibly Brighton’s best music journalist – wrote an article for The Guardian about why Brighton was so bloody well ace. The gist of it was that we’re pretty damn tolerant here, in a non-pious way, making it impossible to be a misfit. That sounds about right. It’s so easy to be yourself, give stuff a go, fail without embarrassment. People talk about Brighton being a cool place, but actually it’s that lack of embarrassment that makes us tick. You wanna be in a band? Just get up on stage and give it a go. If you’re crap, no big deal, there are plenty of terrible bands here. And maybe next year you’ll be great. So what if your club night is empty. Someone had fun, and maybe the next one will go off. It’s better to fail here than not give it a go. Your cross-processed photos of DJ’s cats might not be getting the Flickr faves you hoped for, but heaven forbid you haven’t got any creative outlet to talk about in the pub. Get out there and give it a go – but tell us about it first. We want to come and cheer you on.

Beck FOR LASHES
Natasha Khan’s been a busy Bat since we last touched base with her – she’s due SOURCE props for winning an Ivor Novello Best Contemporary Song award for ‘Daniel’. These are songwriting awards rather than some random industry back-slap, so they’re the ones the proper artists want to win. Bat For Lashes will also feature on the soundtrack for the next Twighlight teen goth vamp knicker-wetter movie, Eclipse. A collaboration with lo-fi luminary Beck, the song entitled ‘Let’s Get Lost’ is exclusive to the soundtrack and finds itself in the esteemed company of UNKLE, Florence & The Machine and the apt Vampire Weekend.
brighton’s live again
Once again Brighton Live offers us lucky lot to see the future stars of tomorrow playing in intimate and quirky settings around our glorious town, all for free. Keeping Brighton at the forefront of the ever-lapping waves of incoming artists, the last seven years have seen The Maccabees, Fujiya & Miyagi, The Half Sisters and so many others showcase their talents. This year the BBC and Concorde 2 are joining in the racket along with a flurry of local promoters, labels and industry professionals too.
SPOONful of love
Brighton’s Adam Moog is gathering locals to attempt Brighton’s biggest official love-in at the Level on Saturday 5th. What started as something to occupy his spare time, the Facebook group has snowballed to over a thousand would-be participants for the Big Spoon. Yet to be completely confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records, this would set an unprecedented record. Show some appreciation for the overlooked and in recent months the place of some unsavoury crimes and bring back the snuggle.
SOURCE GETS QUIZZICAL
We often tell you we know best when it comes to music, and this was ratified by our triumphant showing at The Great Escape’s industry pop quiz. SOURCE beat a plucky Radio Reverb team into second and, more importantly, Simon Price’s NME/Mojo/ Latest journo team and previous winners into a poor third place,

as well as celeb teams including Stephen from New Order, who we stared at like giddy pop fans. Hey, he was in Joy Division after all. It was perhaps ungracious of our editor to greet Price’s proffered gracious handshake with a taunt of “in your FACE”, but the taste of victory was way too sweet to avoid it. If you want to win the pile of crap CDs we got as a prize, email competitions@ brightonsource.co.uk.
crafty business
Those creative folks at Handmade Brighton are hosting their first alternative craft and fashion fair since the grand opening of their new co-operative shop on St James Street last month. The fair boasts music, free entry and a fully-stocked bar, as well as 30 stalls offering all manner of hand-made goodies, including clothing, jewellery and screen prints. It’s enough to make you forget all about those shit friendship bracelets you used to make at school.
songfactor for Sam
Starting out as an idea between schoolfriends Ben Stringer and Rob Biss, the Sussex Academy of Music aims to bring their love of music to the masses, providing corporate entertainment from team-building and special live shows to recording space and artist management. New weekly workshop The Songfactor is opening its doors to all aspiring songwriters and composers to put their thoughts to paper in professional recording studios, culminating in a showcase show on Juice 107.2 FM.
almost as good as abbey road
One of the hippest hang outs for bands, Brighton Electric – recording home-from-home to the likes of Blood Red Shoes, The Noisettes and Laura Marling – found itself in the top five finalists for Music Week magazines Studio Of The Year Award. Narrowly missing out to the legendary Abbey Road, the place is really making a name for itselves and is also rehearsal space to some great local bands. Book in at www.brightonelectric.co.uk and you might end up rubbing shoulders with your heroes.

VOODOO
HA HA BAR
Teaming up with the creative clothing company WeSC, Voodoo is a new night at hip hop hold-up Riki Tiks. The request-friendly DJs Nick Maxwell and Insight will be spinning the voodoo that is groove, bringing back old school sounds, retro funk, soul and all that jazz. Every Friday from 9-3am, featuring special guests and monumental WeSC giveaways to follow, with free entry all night long.
Undergoing a transformation, the Ha Ha bar and grill adjacent to the Pavilion has re-emerged as a stunning new setting for alfresco dining, pre-theatre drinks, or somewhere to sit down in style for afternoon tea. Offering the best seasonal foods and ingredients from all across the British Isles, they’re serving up a contemporary British menu. With fresh sea bream stuffed with fennel, orange and spinach, five different types of steak to hand-crumbed haddock fish fingers, there’s something to suit everyone’s tastes.

METWAY STUDIOS
Aiming to fill a certain niche in the smörgåsbord of live music destinations is Jam. They’ve been dipping their toe in those beery waters for a while now – Little Dragon and Plugs being two recent highlights – but now they’ve finally stripped off their bathrobe and taken the plunge. Just in time for a brilliant if gruelling road test at this year’s Great Escape, they’ve moved the bar (to open up the room), bought and repositioned a swanky modular stage (to accommodate bands of various numbers), and given the sound system a dose of the ‘roids.
A live music night with a twist, Bakkheia sees artists and audiences alike exploring and deconstructing the boundaries between performer and punter. At Latest Music Bar on Wednesday 2nd, one-man-loop-pedal act Cosmo will be performing a totally improvised set with just his wits about him. Vocal group +∑ will harmonise lyrics written by the audience, and Puncture Kit performs a truly inspired drum set from an assortment of bicycle parts. Nick Tann, Billy Irvine and Fred Kinbom all play upstairs throughout the evening.
Throughout the summer nights, B-side at The Fortune of War brings us top-dollar DJs playing to raise awareness for Brighton-based charity, Bottletop. The £4 donation entry goes towards supporting the grass-roots educational projects Bottletop run to empower, educate and alleviate poverty in Malawi, Brazil, Rwanda and the UK, with a special programme to raise awareness of sexual health too. Upcoming acts rumoured to support this worthy cause are Adam Freeland, Evil Nine and Dekker, so look out for the next one.

As you know, dear reader, nothing is closer to our hearts (and stomachs) than a good roast dinner of a Sunday. That’s why new blog The Great Brighton Roast Hunt caught our eye. Starting out with in-depth reviews from all over, featuring Temple Bar, The Foragers and The Pub With No Name so far. Covering all aspects of a good meal, with average drinks and dessert prices covered, ambience and service are scrutinised with a fair hand and hearty appetite. Hunt it out at brightonroasthunt.blogspot.com.
After a sucessful transition from eBay to the general e-commerce market, Brighton based internet shop Pretty In Pink is the go-to source for tracking down those original 40s through to 80s kitchenware, accessories and now vintage clothing for men and women. Environmentalism is also a factor – owner Patricia N. Maggs says, “as buying vintage is a great way of recycling” – and they’ve been nominated for the Sussex Eco Awards for their green initiatives. They’re also selling vintage knitting patterns, so keen kitsch-followers can unpick and transform an old jumper or two. Take a peek at prettypinkantiques.co.uk
The Levellers’ smashing studio complex Metway just got more smashing, via an overall overhaul and general transformation. All kinds of artists have made musical magic there, including Joe Strummer, Orbital and Nick Cave, and it’s been the Levellers’ home and general creative hub for our city for the last two decades. A definite community spirit lends the place a real punk/DIY atmosphere rather than your usual profit-obsessed business. Check out the studio’s equipment spec at metwaystudios.co.uk.

BEACHDOWN MELTDOWN - CATCH THE PIDGEON! Unsurprisingly, our interview with Joe Pidgeon from Beachdown sparked some angry (and lengthy) responses. We’ve put together some of the main points you made.
SORRY – THE HARDEST WORD
Joe Pidgeon claims he’s ‘apologised enough’ - but to be frank I’ve never heard him say sorry once. If it had been a free festival run by a couple of well-meaning hippies, that would have been fine. But he tried to market it as a proper big name festival without having the professionalism to back it up. He chose to go incommunicado when ticket sellers and buyers alike were after answers. I’m so sorry to hear he had “hundreds of people who were asking questions” - I wonder why that was? Was he really not able to issue a press release, or set up a Facebook group to tell people what was going on? Matt via email
DON’T DIRECT
It was inevitable that we’d hear from Joe Pidgeon eventually – he always seems keen to portray himself as the victim of the banks, the council, the suppliers, it’s
Page 8
always been someone else’s fault. I note that Future Festivals is the fourth company in his name that’s gone under in the last decade, perhaps he should realise that company directorship isn’t quite the job for him? Abby via email
MONEY WALKS
Many ticketholders (including myself) still haven’t received their money back. The latest we hear is that Future Festivals have had a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) accepted, avoiding bankruptcy. This involves creditors getting back a portion of what they are owed, but not the whole sum. Unsurprisingly us ticketholders were not included as creditors even though Joe Pidgeon has all the ticketholders’ contact details. James via email
FACEBOOK FIGHT
Ticketholders who did not pay with a credit card or through Ticketline have been on a wild goose chase for the past six months. The Future Festivals directors’ CVA proposes to pay off a percentage of their debts to themselves and friends/family members, while ignoring ticketholders completely. If you’re interested in more details, these can be found at the Facebook group I administer, Beachdown Letdown. I believe your readers have a right to know the facts about what’s going on behind the scenes. Alison via email
NICE ADVICE?
I’m perplexed – the company is in admin. THERE IS NO MONEY. Let it go, right? If people want their money write to Grace Jones’ agent and tell me how it goes. @theavangelist via twitter So the saga continues…Funnily, we didn’t get any letters saying they had a lovely time at the 2008 fest and wishing the organisers all the best. Odd that.

Please, please can you get one of your interns to mark all the venues mentioned in SOURCE on a map of Brighton and print it in each magazine? That would make us very happy. Clarel and Sims via www.brightonsource.co.uk Our Student Guide at the start of term had this valuable item inside it. But you missed it by the sound of it. Shame, it’s a collector’s item now. A point worth mentioning, our interns are too busy writing proper articles to be given the shit jobs. That stuff falls to the permanent staffers.
PROPERLY AGITATED
Just thought I’d email to say I picked up SOURCE the other day and read about The Agitator, then saw he was playing your Great Escape party. I went down and I was totally blown away, the guy’s just brilliant. The fact that he copped a strop and stormed off just added to it frankly. Amazing, cheers! Daisy, via www.brightonsource.co.uk Glad you enjoyed it Daisy, it was a hell of a night. It was a shame the sound went down for a bit, the perils of putting on live shows we suppose. See page 24 for more, and maybe even a picture of yourself.
WORSHIP THE POPE
Cheers for your Great Escape party. Pope Joan were fucking rad. Alan, via brightonsource.co.uk No problem at all. Thanks for coming.
MADE UP BANDS •
Good to see the council and SOURCE getting behind local bands. I saw the red dot things by the names in your mag and then all over the Great Escape brochure. It didn’t make me see any more local acts at TGE but I have paid attention to try and catch them in the future. Was that a one off for you or will you be doing it every month? Sally, via email Yeah we thought it was a good idea. That’s not arrogant by the way – the council came up with it. We’re going to carry on with it for the moment, see how people like it. That’s one vote for it so far, anyone else have an opinion?
Page 10
LOCALS ESCAPE TGE
As a local promoter and band manager I am rather peeved by the lack of local bands at this year’s Great Escape. The organisers seem to have overlooked many of the very talented local bands – Gloria Cycles, The Perils, The Hornblower Brothers, Sweet Sweet Lies, Kovak, The Valentines and many more. They’re just too lazy to check out the local scene, too driven by the money paid by record companies, pluggers etc to get their acts onto the bill. The Alternative Great Escape is a wonderful idea – let’s give the locals the crappiest venues, at the crappiest times of day and then let’s charge them a massive hire fee for said crappy venue. Let’s stop them from making any money from the door by insisting that delegates and wristband holders get free entry and let’s promise them a listing in the main programme that we all know will amount to the tiniest bit of text shoved near the back of the guide. Thanks for the crumbs from your table! I do think that The Great Escape is great for Brighton but the organisers choose to ignore the independent/DIY scene that makes this city’s music scene so great and so very unique. David via email We take your point David, but TGE is more about Brighton hosting great music – Glastonbury isn’t full of Somerset bands after all – and the festival organisers don’t pretend to be a not-for-profit organisation. Of course we want to see as many Brighton bands on the bill as possible but we are lucky enough to have Brighton Live every year. Trying to make any money out of the Alternative Escape is unlikely but better that the festival is opened up at all, don’t you think?

Natty
Komedia Tues 1st
Pouring rain, sub-zero temperatures and gale-force winds... that’s right, the Great British Summer’s here, and who better to kick it off than purveyor of laid-back reggae soul, Natty. Owing his influences as much to Dylan and Neil Young as Bob Marley, Natty’s uplifting sunshine pop and acoustic reggae rhythms are an infectious, head-nodding, foot-tapping tonic to thaw even the most frostbitten Brightonian soul. Bust out the flip-flops, knock back your Pimm’s and bring on the good times. (RH)
Julian Cope Komedia Weds 2nd
If you’ve never heard of Julian Cope you’ve probably spent your entire life hanging out on the Lost island with only Lord Lucan for company. In his 30-year-long career Cope has metamorphosed from singer to occultist, from writer to artist. Now the legendary hat-wearing frontman takes to the stage once more, bringing a performance that’s a little bit bluesy, a little bit 70s rock and – in places – a little bit Mick Jagger. (DC)
SMALL BLACK / WASHED OUT

STEREOPHONICS
IAN MCCULLOCH
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me,” goes the children’s rhyme. Happily, Stereophonics have been on the receiving end of the lot, sulkily penning ‘Mr Writer’ after every critic in the world called them “workmanlike meat and potato rockers”. Even their own fans turned on them at a recent Singapore show, when singer Kelly Jones took a flip-flop to the face. SOURCE suggests you rely on the sticks and stones, which are freely available tonight from Brighton beach. (BG)
Brighton throws its arms open to a second post-punk legend from the late 70s Liverpool scene this month, following Julian Cope’s turn. Minus his Bunnymen, it’s unclear what McCulloch will present this evening but given that he still considers himself the greatest frontman rock has ever seen and possesses a handful of songs which might be deemed evidence of this bold claim, we should at least expect a confident, compelling performance. Bring on the dancing horses. (BG)
Freebutt Weds 2nd
These two separate artists are seemingly intertwined, having shared a split single, with Small Black remixing Washed Out’s ‘You’ll See It’, while Washed Out reworked Small Black’s ‘Despicable Dogs’. They then toured around the USA, including a successful SXSW showcase earlier this year. Small Black, who now appears with a full band who also support Washed Out onstage, produces a beautiful, distorted brand of chill wave. Washed Out creates a punchier electronic version. Inseparable, yes, but they’re also irresistible too. (TR)

When telling the Motown story, Martha Reeves has to feature quite heavily – she’s such an important part of the legendary Detroit label. With a voice able to stand up against the distinctive pounding Motown beat, Martha could also handle the big choruses that Berry Gordy’s imprint was famous for. With this being her third appearance at Concorde 2 in as many years, she’s almost become synonymous with the arrival of the sunshine. Her lyric “Summer’s here and the time is right,” never seemed so applicable. (TR)

This guy (first name Ben, mystery over) is like, so hot right now. Having worked with hip hop heavyweights such as Jay-Z, Kanye West and erm, N-Dubz, white-haired Mr Hudson is now headlining his very own tour. Singing songs from his epic and critically acclaimed album ‘Straight, No Chaser’ (executively produced by Kanye West), expect some crushing beats, spine-tingling vocals and emotional lyrics which make for his trademark futuristic cool pop. (PW)
VICGODARD&SUBWAYSECT
Engine Room Fri 18th
Always the bridesmaids, Godard’s Subway Sect were there at the dawn of punk, sharing 1976 stages with the Pistols and The Clash, but multiple line-up changes and a microscopic discography stymied their chances of making any kind of headway. Godard backpedalled into crooning rock’n’roll and swing, before famously lending his talents to the Royal Mail delivery round. Despite eventual re-evaluation and rehabilitation, live shows by any form of Subway Sect are hen’s teeth rare, so miss him at your peril. (DL)
Broken Bells
Tues 22nd Digital
DangerMouse has spent much of his post ‘Grey Album’/hip hop time flitting – do mice flit? – from hokey blues (Black Keys), pop (Gnarls Barkley, Gorrilaz), indie concept albums (‘Dark Night Of The Soul’) and electro funk (The Rapture). Most recently, he’s hooked up in a rampantly fertile collaboration with James Mercer of the Shins in Broken Bells. Their muchlauded, self-titled debut is a wonderfully bionic progression of the Shins’ sound, and heck, two super-talented heroes doing their thing in Digital has got to be worth the admission. (MB)
SERIOUS SAM BARRETT The Basement Tues 22nd
One of the rising stars of the UK Americana folk scene, Yorkshire-based Serious Sam Barrett stops by Brighton for a special pre-Glastonbury warm-up show in support of his debut album ‘Close To Home’. Playing his 12-string resonator guitar, Sam’s country/roots sound mixes songs about his home county with traditional southern folk stompers – it’s raw, gritty but

above all it’s real and full of heart. Support comes from Treecreeper front-man Will Burns and a solo set by locals The Sea Will Decide. (IC)
EL VEZ
Concorde 2 Weds 23rd
When he first reached these shores via Alan McGee’s once-ubiquitous Poptones imprint, Roberto Lopez’ ‘Mexican Elvis’ persona was overlooked by many, assuming at best that this was a tongue-in-cheek guilty pleasure, somewhere between Tony Ferrino and the Jarrow Elvis. In fact, El Vez has long been more than a comedy tribute act, mixing political activism and a broad spread of classic rock’n’roll and punk influences into his performances. El Vez’s current tour now promises his Kiss tribute too – rock on! (DL)
STEVE MASON Hanbury Ballroom Thurs 24th
“I wanted to be sectioned,” admitted the Beta Band’s darkly troubled and troubling former singer recently, four years after leaving what looked like a suicide note on MySpace before disappearing for two weeks. Acclaimed new album, the Richard X-produced ‘Boys Outside’, seems to mark the semi-resurrection of this fiercely creative individual, who really has been, as his comeback single of the same name attests, ‘Lost And Found’. Clearly, sanity suits him. (BG)
WOLF GANG
Jam Sat 26th
Depending on your preferred frame of reference, this newly arrived male solo artist has been variously cited as the new Frankmusik and even the new Duran Duran. Certainly he’s showing off a broad range of theatrical pop skills on songs like ‘The King And All Of His Men’ and ‘Back To Back’, perhaps inviting such grandiose comparisons. But the potential hinted at thus far seems to be paying off – major label deals aren’t thrown at just anyone these days. (NC)

Detroit City’s Koffin Kats return to Brighton with their heavy psychobilly sound. Having previously set a record attendance at The Hobgoblin (407 to be precise), Hector’s House should provide a much better experience for everyone there. Every time these guys hit the stage, it’s like their lives depend on it. Smashed skulls, playing a double bass with a guitar as a slide and making a crucifix in the process, and this is just the beginning. Throw in a few punk classics like The Damned’s ‘Ignite’ and you have yourself a riot. (GA)

miserable rich orchestral indie folkers fight off disaster, again Words by james kendall photo by the pistoleers Styling Daniela Hatfield, Assistant Irina Dashkovsky Vintage clothing and accessories supplied by Gladrags Community Costume Resource Hair and make up by Emma and Myrtle at Square Roots
On the page it’s either a genius idea or one that’s going to see you perform no further than the open mic night at your local boozer. James De Malplaquet had been playing his confessional songs solo for a while but was advised to give them the band treatment. The indie rock outfit he formed overpowered the subtleties but an invite into folk supergroup Shoreline gave him the brainwave to drag his very modern songs into elegant classical instrumentation. Cello, violin, double bass and acoustic guitar gave a refined, chamber orchestra feel to songs about sex, drugs and generally making a little bit of a twat out of yourself. But a bit of English charm will take you a long way, and luckily for The Miserable Rich they’ve got bags of it meaning that the
Page 18
juxtaposition works. So where has it taken these Willkommen Collective members? Well, across Europe, up and down the UK motorways and into various BBC radio studios for a raft of live sessions. And according to our ears – and the reviews that have started to appear – their second album ‘Of Flight & Fury’ is going to take them so much further. With a bigger, turn-of-the-70s widescreen psychedelia sound this time out, the LP is perfectly timed for warm summer evenings, coming on like a lost Love acoustic album. But while the strings soar the lyrics still have a bite, even if that bite is normally directed at the narrator himself. Prime example is ‘Let It Fade’, a break up
www.brightonsource.co.uk
“Acoustic music tends to be a lot about love affairs and unrequited love,” explains James. “We try to avoid that because we feel that there’s so much more to write about. I think we’re like that musically too. We never want to make things too obvious. But it still has to be approachable – it needs to be very human, we don’t want it to be too intellectual.” But with no electric instruments or drums it would be easy for the band to be chinstroking clever clogs. However there’s a whole wealth of influences that come together to form a swirling, warm, inviting sound that’s rich with feeling. The violins have an indie element from Mike, joined to a classical influence from Will’s cello, while guitarist Jim brings classic rock from his Clearlake days. Meanwhile Reece’s jazz heritage drives the bass and James’ vocals have the soul rawness of the songs he heard during his upbringing. For a bunch of musicians so talented they’re in demand from so many bands it’s a struggle even to get a practice session together, let alone an album, The Miserable Rich live a surprising shambolic life – especially when they get on the road and the drink starts to flow. On previous outings they’ve lost passports in the minutes between passport control and boarding the plane, left the whole tour’s takings on a hostel pool table and dropped the night’s wages in the middle of the venue. But while they’ve learned not to do business backstage at a festival while guzzling absinthe, things tend to turn out alright in the end. It was no different on their recent tour of Europe. This time out a German venue double booking saw them moved to a 600 capacity hip hop club, leaving plenty of room for the 20 people who actually managed to find their way in though the locked door. “Each of them had paid the same ticket price as if there was 600 people,” recognises James. “So ALBUM: ‘Of Flight & Fury’ out now what we did was we LIVE: West Hill Hall, Sat 19th came off stage and sat WEB: myspace.com/themiserablerich on the cushions next to them and just played to them like that, tried to make it as nice as possible.”
fyi
song so unflinching that it admits that James’ soon-to-be-exgirlfriend is no longer having orgasms. Elsewhere ‘Somerhill’ – named after the local school – tells of impossible discretion in the seduction of a yummy mummy, and ‘Chestnut Sunday’ is full of post-cocaine regret. “I guess the whole theme of the album is some kind of escape from the kind of the drudgery that’s been going on through the country for the last year or so,” says James. “So it might be escape through overindulgence, it might be escape through romanticism and poetry, and it might be just sort of raw anger.” It may sound like the two elements would jar, but the thing that ties the music and the lyrics together is that they’re both full of soul.
www.brightonsource.co.uk
It’s a story that says a lot about the band – their personal touch, their shambolic charm and their desire to make the best of things. Similarly when James was a waiter at Browns, Skint boss Damian Harris used to come in for Sunday lunch, often a little after the food had finished. James offered to save him a dinner if he’d listen to his demo. When Damian didn’t turn up he saved the dinner and took it to the Skint offices the next day with a Bloody Mary. Success from disaster thanks to a little thoughtfulness. Like we said, their English charm has taken them a long way. It might even make them rich.

Indie got weird in the last decade. What used to be a pretty well demarcated rock’n’roll subgenre, involving mostly guitars, bass and drums (and perhaps the odd keyboard in the case of the particularly fey exponents), now includes the faux-ethnic warbling of MIA and the electro-poncery of La Roux. Well no more; making a land-grab for true indie are Wasted Youth. No electro remixes and no flavour-of-the-month scenesters. If it ain’t a bone fide hit, it ain’t getting in. Just remember to say your leather jacket is a tribute to the Stooges and not Justice. (MB)
BREAKAGE
Audio Weds 2nd
Breakage has been a busy basshead lately, releasing instant grime anthem ‘Hard’, collaborating with Roots Manuva on ‘Run ‘Em Out’ and playing up, down and all around the country. On Wednesday 2nd he’ll grace Audio’s decks for Supercharged, their staple dance night that’s been a permanent fixture in clubbers’ midweek calendars for half a decade now, so if you can’t wait till the weekend to satisfy your dubstep and drum’n’bass craving this night will certainly satiate you. (ZC)
LOWDOWN SKANKIN Jazz Place Thurs 3rd
Yet another midweek d’n’b dubstep fest – this one goes back to the roots though, being in an intimate venue with 4K of ear-bending sound supplied by Turbo. Ouch! Fresh from his ‘Killers’ track currently being battered worldwide by Caspa, Rusko and Skream, Goldie’s engineer DJ Heist will be dropping the freshest dubplates from d’n’b and the new halfstep sound. Back-up from Innovation, Rootz, and MC Double J makes this night one not to miss. (DC)

SOUL CASSEROLE •
Jazz Place Fri 4th
A night throwing its arms around the whole soul gamut, from rare underground groove, raw funk and Latin jazz to upfront funky beats, Soul Casserole brings an unfussy and unpretentious flavour to Fridays. Otis, Aretha, Curtis and Wilson are all so well-ensconced in the crowd’s heads they don’t need surnames, and DJs Alkie, Nelly and Funkelstilspin with special guest Bob Smith (founder and owner of Hove’s Uptight Records) cook up the beats. (NC)
SKREAM, ZINC & SBTRKT Concorde 2 Sat 5th
Supercharged hits Concorde 2 with a larger-than-life line-up. Skream, one of dubstep’s pioneers and most proficient producers plus Zinc, the drum’n’bass master who’s proven he can successfully cross genres with classic garage like ‘138 Trek’ and his recent fidgety ‘Crack House EP’. Then we have SBTRKT, some fresh talent fast making a name for himself with props from Annie Mac, Zane Lowe and Mary Anne Hobbs. If there’s a better dance night this year we’re going to be very spoilt. (ZC)
BLACK RABBIT
Coalition Sat 5th
Guy Williams and Bones’ über-cool electro night has had a good showing on the south coast, first at Audio and now at Coalition. Guy has been rocking dancefloors for years, appearing on our radar first at legendary gay nights Trade and DTPM before taking the electro genre mainstream a few years ago. He’s damn good these days, and Bones ain’t bad either. (JK)
DUSK + BLACKDOWN Dome Tues 8th
Combining elements of dubstep, grime and desi sounds, Dusk + Blackdown resonate an amalgamated and gritty form of electronic music that reflects the multicultural and often dissolute London from which it originates. This month they bring their Margins Music live show to the Brighton Dome where we can expect some awesome acoustics and fully integrated audiovisual set sampling old Bollywood films mixed with video footage of an undone modern London. THE OUTER CHURCH • Penthouse Weds 9th
Joseph Stannard from The Wire’s monthly excursion into the hinterlands of rock and electronics tonight welcomes guest Ian Hodgson of Moon Wiring Club. Operating out of the (fictional) village of Clinkskell, Moon Wiring Club create moodscapes from a disorientating array of unsettling samples, drawn from the uncanny elements of Britain’s film and television heritage. Students of the Ghost Box and Mordant Music labels, as well as disaffected Boards Of Canada fans, should discover much to prickle the skin here. (DL)
BLAH BLAH BLAH • Digital Sat 12th
Blah Blah Blah is a brand born in Brighton, but it’s also known internationally, in part due to its successful blog which critiques
cutting edge dance music. Expect this special third birthday edition to shine at its natural home. Add in the magic ingredient of rising dance star Alex Metric, with his multitude of quality remixes and you have the perfect electronic cocktail. (TR)
SIDNEY SAMSON Honey Club Sat 12th
One tune can make you in dance music and ‘Riverside’ certainly made Sidney Sampson – and not just in Britain, across the whole world. Chunky electro that stomps around like a toddler that’s just dropped its ice cream, the track was hammered by everyone from David Guetta to Diplo and Tiga. This is probably gonna be the biggest night Seven Sins have thrown for a while. (JK)
VIBEALIVE/LUNARCY • Volks Sat 12th/Sat 26th
Two classic slabs of hedonism return for reunions at the Volks this month. First, with proof that hardcore will never die, is Vibealive who are cramming 16 DJs into Saturday 12th. A fortnight later Mr Natural and The Lunarcy Soundsystem give a nod to all the bass music they played over 14 years. Expect plenty of old faces at both nights. (JK)
KELE OKEREKE
Digital Thurs 24th
Confusion reigns at the heart of Bloc Party and their overburdened singer, Kele Okereke. Do they want to be a guitar band, an electronic act, the new Radiohead, or all three? Is he gay, straight or swinging all over the place like a severed electric cable? Well, judging by the frenzied synth and LED thunderstorm of debut single ‘Tenderoni’ and a tell-all interview he recently gave to Butt magazine, we are nearing clarity. Congratulations to Kele for finally coming out, on both counts. (BG)
DIRTYBIRD
Audio Fri 25th
As if it wasn’t enough that Dirtybird boss Claude VonStroke turned up at Minimal Kids in April, now the label is back to celebrate its fifth birthday. Justin Martin – who makes beautiful, emotive house music best summed up by his classic ‘The Sad Piano’ – headlines but J Phlip is joining him on the journey from San Francisco where she holds a highly regarded residency at Endup. Schtumm and Kliks DJs will back them up. (JK)
MK13 •
Harlequins Sat 26th
One of Brighton’s last remaining industrial nights is back this month, after May saw it return from a well-earned break. And it goes a long way to show there’s more to industrial goth nights than PVC-clad vampires and clove cigarettes. Sure, there might be a few of these, but there’ll also be stomping beats, dirty bass and bleeping EBM tunes. Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it. (DC)

Source vs the Recommender Words and photos by james kendall
One day we’ll learn. For the fourth year running we crammed more musical talent into a venue and into a timeframe than was necessary or sane. This time out The Recommender – SOURCE contributors and blog superstars – came aboard to share the stress and showcase some of the bands they love. Kicking off things in a suave style, Mirrors floored everyone with their glacial, emotional synth pop, while Foreign Office’s tight grooves had the room fired up. The Agitator was agitated which led to a fired up performance in front of a crammed audience, ready for the hyped King Charles to soak up the adulation. Pope Joan drove things home with one of the most intense performances we saw over the whole Great Escape. A fantastic night, sorry if you struggled to get in but thanks if you were one of the many that cheered on the bands to some killer performances.

Smash & Grab Words and photos by james kendall
The last two really amazing club nights – proper mind blowing nights – we’ve been to have been chalk’n’cheese and suggest a generational split to dancing the night away. Carl Craig’s surprise appearance at Jam drew a serious crowd of reverential older musos, locked into the dancefloor all night, while Smash & Grab was a riot in every corner of the club as pop music clashed with r’n’b Kelis ‘Accapella’ and dubstep. The young crowd knew Robin S ‘Show Me Love’ their music and bounced the dancefloor Hot Chip ‘One Life Stand’ with enthusiasm to the love songs provide by the Whitney Houston ‘How Will I Know’ Queens Of Noize, Sally SexFace Nathan Detroit and yours Candi Staton ‘Young Hearts Run Free’ truly. Oh, there was another DJ too – Florence (minus The Otis Reading ‘Try A Little Tenderness’ Machine). Her enthusiasm was contagious and the Chaka Chan ‘Ain’t Nobody’ party throwdown almost took the roof off Prince ‘I Wanna Be Your Lover’ the Concorde. It wasn’t just about the Pointer Sisters ‘Jump’ music though – the video booth, dressing Livin’ Joy ‘Dreamer’ up box, holiday themed photo booth and face/tattoo painter all got plenty of action. A real adventure.

floating on a sea of strange Words by james kendall What nights are you involved in and what are they about? Firstly I’m involved with 13 Monsters, which started as a post-The Do (ultimate moneylosing basement party) trial at the Barfly coinciding with a Liars show. Now it’s a monthly sell-out meta-low-brow social for late bloomers/early adopters at The Loft. See also, the four-years-young Lilo Feast at The Penthouse and Angry Dance Party at Digital. What’s the essence of DJing? Basically it’s playing songs that people like, even if they don’t know it yet. Add to that not underestimating your audience, sticking to your guns and not taking any requests.
What makes Brighton worth living in at the moment? The Tongues crew have been putting on special little basement parties, and have branched out to late night shows at the working men’s club at the bottom of Lewes Road. Sex Is Disgusting have yet to put on a bad s h o w (check t h e i r Fleetwood Mac ‘The Chain’ annual NEXT EVENT: 13 Monsters, Sat 5th The Loft Electrik Red ‘W.F.Y.’ Dudefest LABEL: hungryforpower.co.uk Liars ‘Scissor’ on Sun RE: RE: NO SUBJECT rerenosubject.co.uk Jason Derulo ‘Whatcha Say’ 6 t h ) . Peepholes ‘Liar (E*Rock remix)’ Double Dagger ‘Luxury Condos For The Poor’ Tangerine Dream ‘No Man’s Land’ Shameless is a non-guilty pleasure and Riz Ortolani ‘Cannibal Holocaust (Main Theme)’ there’s Milk Teeth too. And, you know, I ROTFLOL ‘Lost Inside The Stress Boxes, The Movie’ have a lot of respect for New Hero for Souls Of Mischief ‘93 ‘Til Infinity’ being the first people to make The Church/Club New York a viable venue.
TOP TEN
How important is it to play things that people think they want to hear? Very. But so is creating new hits. Nobody wants to go to a club and not recognise a single hook, but at the same time if every track’s a hit there’s nothing new to make you come back.
What’s your cast iron get-out-of-jail card when things go south? Fleetwood Mac’s ‘The Chain’ – post-Optimo it’s the de-facto mosh-along anthem.
Page 28
Was your short-lived 90s hip hop night Ghost Ryde 15 years behind the times or 15 months ahead of the times? There hadn’t really been any hip hop in Brighton for a couple of years, yet there are tons of kids who only listen to Big L and Notorious. I wanted it to be Work It for Brighton, which maybe was a bit optimistic midweek at Jam. Now though, there’s Sweatshop, there’s Milk Teeth, there’s Dirty Money – so there’s definitely space in Brighton for that kind of thing.
FYI
What’s next? I’m setting up Re: Re: No Subject, which I’d explain now as a post-everything ideal for living, but will probably end up being pictures of friends drinking Red Stripe and a night in a bar with live Chatroulette. Hungry For Power is our record label dealing in super limited 12”s – one side an EP, one side remixes. So far we’ve put out Peepholes and Cold Pumas with remixes from Brassica, DJ Murlo, E*Rock & Eyes, coming soon are San Francisco’s Water Borders.

Culture WORDS BY NICK COQUET, BEN MILLER Photo by ed moore At Edshots
Comedy: Seann Walsh • Caroline of Brunswick Weds 2nd
As Edinburgh zips into pant-pissingly exciting sight again, so do the memories of Brighton’s finest in the Scottish capital last year. Despite being tired, bedraggled and emotional, local hero Seann Walsh’s memorably resolute, bug-eyed gig in front of a tiny cavern of stoned Jock teenagers on the closing weekend last year was an undoubted highlight, even if it all felt a long way from the razor sharp performances which have earned him awards and small screen fame. (BM)
FILM: SEX & THE CITY 2 Duke of York’s until Thurs 3rd
One hundred and eighty seven years old between them, the vivacious oestrogen-free gadabouts who make up the S&TC quartet return to the silver screen for the second in a credibility-and-credulity-stretching big dollar franchise. Two years since we last glimpsed into their unlikely lives, we find Carrie’s marriage to Big somewhat on the rocks. Duh, who’d have guessed? The gals repair to Abu Dhabi for an exotic break to cheer up the horse-faced wife and, inevitably, show off their matching shoes and accessories. It sounds truly awful. (NC)
Talk: The Space • The Basement Thurs 3rd
The achievement of The Space in persuading production overlord William Orbit to pop down to The Basement for a chat seems too implausible to miss, particularly if someone can persuade him to accidentally destroy every last trace of the Katie Melua album he’ll have created last month. In a tag team Never Mind The Buzzcocks would be proud of, he’s joined by Tim Pope, the brilliant director of multitudinous videos by the likes of The Cure, Soft Cell, David Bowie and Reverend And The Makers. (BM)
Theatre: My Name Is Sue The Basement Thurs 10th
In a cross between Julia Davis’ sinister spinsterdom as Jill in Nighty Night, the unhinged provincial tragedy of The League Of Gentlemen and the piano-plonking falsettos of a drunken 30-something virgin entertaining indifferent cruise shippers, Dafydd James’ cross-dressing Welsh weirdo became the unnerving oddball of last year’s Edinburgh. Back for another
Page 30
blistering, surprisingly affecting assault on the keys and heartstrings, the intrigue this time around will be whether he can add substance to shock value. It’s definitely going to be memorable. (BM)
Comedy: Claire Dowie
Upstairs at Three and Ten Thurs 10th – Fri 11th Whenever Claire Dowie surfaces, the results are worth watching – in three decades of provocative stage busting she’s set herself up as a beer-swilling, fagguzzling anti-heroine of “dyke culture”, morphed into a man and single-handedly spun a twist on interactivity through monologue, stand-up and no-stone-unturned audience involvement. Buy Little Buy Less Buy Nothing At All centres on “a tragic inability to shop”, apparently involving comedy, music and “interpretive dance”. These are also apparently the only two performances of it she’ll be doing. (BM)
DANCE: MICHAEL CLARK COMPANY COME, BEEN AND GONE Dome Tues 15th
Michael Clark has always been the rock star of ballet, fusing the noble art with contemporary and alternative music – notably a run of leaping-about-with-arsesexposed pieces for the likes of The Fall, Laibach and Erasure. His credibility credentials have always been tiptop; dressing up and messing up with Leigh Bowery in the theatre-inspiring Taboo days, resplendent with mohican and tutu. This time around, he’s focusing somewhat intriguingly on the work of David Bowie, as well as a litany of Dame collaborators and inspirations, from Lou Reed, Iggy and Eno to Kraftwerk. Ballet definitely doesn’t come with more balls, quite possibly on show tonight. (NC)
www.brightonsource.co.uk
Theatre: Salome Theatre Royal Tues 15th – Sat 19th
A big, brash, showbiz reimagining of Oscar Wilde’s notorious byzantine vision of biblical characters making out with each other and getting their heads lopped off, Headlong’s Salome has added “edgy” modernism to iconic theatre, receiving a mixed reception along the way. A high-energy cast keep the bloodletting camp and high-energy enough to compel, and there’s little effort spared in the “urban” wardrobes and flamboyant imagery. It’s a sure bet to hold the attention, for absurdity if nothing else. (BM)
Comedy: Marcel Lucont Caroline of Brunswick Wed 16th
Arrogant Gallic love god Marcel Lucont perceives himself as the highbrow antithesis of his idiotic English audiences, and you do need an essentially juvenile ability to laugh at crude puns mused in a French accent to appreciate his endearing genius. Assuming you’ve got that, you’ll probably find it impossible not to be seduced by Alexis Dubus’ repulsive lothario, prattling about the stage sipping wine, moaning about London and sneering derisively at humanity’s stupidity. He’s worth it, even if we’re not. (BM)
Event: Factory • Phoenix Sat 19th
If you tripped through the weird, seemingly inescapable maze of glowing tents and bizarre performances in the exotic underworld Phoenix became during White Night last year, you’ll know what to expect from these occasional fundraisers for the gallery’s ambitious expansion plans. For the uninitiated, this time there are sets from Shoreham nautical rave duo 55th Flotilla, solo loop loon Bunty and the formerly-acclaimed Le Band Extraordinaire in their new life as Grow Claws, as well as the usual melee of live art and photography. (BM)
Theatre: A View From The Bridge • New Venture Sat 19th – Sat 26th
The star summer turn at the Venture is an Arthur Miller 1950s classic portraying the folly of a randy Brooklyn husband who foolishly falls in love with his adopted niece, which bodes predictably badly for the illegal immigrant Italian object of her desire. Alan Ayckbourn, Brittany Murphy and Scarlett Johansson all had a crack at this one over the years, and it’s the last chance to catch a major show here before the end of the current NVT season. (BM)
Event: SHORT FUSE • Komedia Studio Bar Sun 13th
Regular litrary night Short Fuse roars up on its scooter for a night dedicated to all things mod, for the launch of Charlie McQuaker’s Die Hard Mod novella. The author will be reading from the book and answering questions from the audience, possibly like “Vespa or Lambretta? Well the former is probably more reliable but the latter just looks the business…” Mod DJ Stan Ogden spins old 45s, there’s a short film on Brighton mod culture and ubiquitous mod comentator writer Paulo Hewitt is present too. Jimmy! (NC)

ART GRADUATE SHOWS •
WORDS BY NICK COQUET Photo: ‘jack’ by lydia garnett www.lydiagarnett.com
In the movies, graduation means a time for mass impromptu musical numbers, with hitherto grumpy tutors clicking their fingers and swaying to the beat as students dance, perfectly choreographed, around the refectory. Happily in real life, graduation is a more serious business, with various chances to exhibit fresh and innovative work to the public. A couple of shows especially caught our eye. More than 500 graduates are exhibiting at the annual Burt Brill and Carden Graduate Show 2010, entitled Hook, Line and Sinker. The Faculty Of Arts becomes the biggest art gallery in the south east, showcasing work from 25 courses from fashion and 3D design to photography. Past graduates include legendary Biba designer Barbara Hulanicki, Turner Prize winners Keith Tyson and Rachel Whiteread, as well as Bond Street’s own Gresham Blake. Lucid is an exhibition of the diversity borne of The University of Brighton’s Photography BA(Hons) – a fine-art orientated class encouraging students to explore and experiment with the fullest depths of the photographic medium, bridging the gap between art school and art world. See it at Brighton Gallery, Grand Parade from Friday 4th-11th.

critic WORDS BY MATT BARKER, IAN CHAMBERS, NICK COQUET
ALBUM: THE BLUESKIES • Souvenir (Killing Moon)
Here’s a mini-album which couldn’t be more commercial if it came emblazoned with the Coca Cola logo. That’s not meant in a sneery, more-obscure-than-thou sense, mind. The Blueskies clearly have their eye on the prize, plying an electro pop trade that’s almost a cross between Keane and OMD – both steely-fixed stares into the pop void in their respective times and brought to a contemporary conclusion across these six perfectly realised and produced pop artefacts. They’re just toured with the Pipettes, headline shows are clearly on the horizon – the blue sky’s the limit. (NC)
EP: BULLIT • Get With It (myspace.com/bullituk)
A lot of CDs arrive purporting to be punky, new wavey pop, but this is the first one we can think of that conjures memories of the first Police album. Bullit realise that the bass just doesn’t cut it as a mere chug-along accompaniment, nor do guitars necessarily need to be plugged through a National Grid of effects to get the sonic point across. So yes, as they suggest there are retro elements to the melting pot but these are carefully tempered with a definite currency that elevates them way above mere backward-lookers. (NC)
EP: DIE STIMME • (One More Step) (diestimme.co.uk)
The subtitle on this EP is ‘Songz By A Brighton Muvver part 1’ – the accompanying literature describes singer Quinn as a responsible mother, proving you can still punk about the place with your waps out and multitask parenting skills. This CD, we have to say, confounded our expectations by 360°. Quinn’s clearly a seasoned punker, with Siouxsie’s ‘Slowdive’ receiving a strings tribute and
Page 34
holy vessels
some Kirk Brandon-isms in the vocals, but it’s brought into the 21st century via some Yeasayer-type quirks. Look out for the album when it’s finished. (NC)
EP: THE GAA GAAS • Repulsion Seminar (myspace.com/thegaagaas)
We wrote about The Gaa Gaas ages ago, when they were just a ramshackle bag of bones, We kind of liked their dissolute boyish charm, but boy have they come a long way since then. From the opening pulsating thrust of ‘Hypnoti(z)ed’ it’s clear that the Gaas have stepped up to the plate and made a proper record worthy of proper attention. Filthy guitars and gutrumbling synths are strewn across tightly-wrought drums and basslines that look set to take alt.dancefloors by the scruff of the neck and punch them in the face. A new record deal and a forthcoming double a-side tell us this band is going to be unavoidable. Don’t even try. (NC)
DEMO: HOLY VESSELS • Demonstration Disc
(myspace.com/theholyvessels)
With the memory of dismal barn dance evenings in our preteens still reasonably fresh, we came to country music fairly late. In the wake of Mumford & Sons, so called nu folk is bursting into the mainstream and kids down the front have forsaken the mosh for the do-si-do. Holy Vessels are briskly becoming the Brighton darlings of the very stable that spawned Mumford (Mumford/Cherbourg’s own Communion nights). Their sharp, ebullient, infectious country grooves sound to us like the best songs Neil Young never got round to writing. Exquisite. (MB)
www.brightonsource.co.uk/REVIEWS
THE HORNBLOWER BROTHERS •
Give and Receivers / Ghost of Kerouac (Static Caravan)
The Hornblower Brothers return, this time with a double a-side single released on acclaimed independent label Static Caravan – but fear not, they’re sounding as wonderfully upbeat as ever. Whatever you want to label it – lo-fi, indie folk, DIY pop or something of that ilk, what we have here is two effortlessly catchy songs that nicely square the circle between Half Man Half Biscuit, Jeffrey Lewis and Belle & Sebastian, all with a distinct English flavour. It’s like a fresh pint of London Pride or a nice cup of tea and a couple of Jammy Dodgers. Yes, it’s lovely to have them back. (IC)
SINGLE: ICE BLACK BIRDS •
As Birds We’d Be Fine / Doors (Laissez Faire Club)
A double a-side of bluesy indie loveliness from definite courtiers of the Leon Kings, this is a pair of accomplished songs that should earn the Birds plenty of love. ‘Doors’ is the more upbeat of the pair, with ‘As Birds…’ stepping back from the monitors and allowing more melodic guitar and bass to centre stage. This is their first appearance in SOURCE since we learned that cheeky bassist Harry made up a tissue of lies in his Street Style interview but we can’t hold a grudge. We rather like them, and so do – apparently – The Horrors. (NC)
SINGLE: THE MORNING ORCHESTRA • Whatever Goes Around (myspace.com/themorning orchestra)
It’s testament to the quality of the pop on show here that we could instantly imagine Take That singing this – it has that same cheery wink of a melody that, properly placed in an advert, could sell bacon rolls at a bar mitzvah. The backing has a timeless, surefooted quality about it that could place it anywhere on the musical timeline between The Band and Supergrass – it’s music that, done right like this, just doesn’t go out of fashion. It’s hard to believe this is their debut single – its every pore breathes experience and belief, as do the other songs on their MySpace by the way, and they’re definitely on our ones-to-watch list. (NC)
ALBUM: THE MUEL • Once At Everywhere (Beach Hut)
If you believe the hackneyed old gags, Sam Walker is something of a rarity in the drummer fraternity. They knock three times and come in late, all those terrible old stereotypes. But Sam’s perhaps a rarity in that he’s ambitious and clearly talented both on and off the stool. Although he plays with a pair of cohorts, the album is the result of a multi-faceted solo instrumentalism that never fails to impress. It’s certainly the best alt.chamber folk poptronica album we’ve heard in a while. (NC)
www.brightonsource.co.uk/REVIEWS
ALBUM: NINA NASTASIA • Outlaster (FatCat)
And there we were thinking we could spot a Steve Albini recording anywhere. This is the sixth time the pair have holed up on an album, and only perhaps in the drums do his telltale influences creep through. Elsewhere this is an eerie string-laden collection with probably more in common with the fatalistic trauma pop of Marc’s Mambas than anything currently riding the zeitgeist. If you liked the faux melodrama of Florence’s work, the authenticity and sheer audacity of this record’s emotional journey will tower above it. (NC)
DEMO: STUART NEWMAN •
Head Hurts (myspace.com/stuartnewman)
It’s probably shortsighted to compare everyone who sings a bit high and angsty and plays an acoustic guitar to a ‘High And Dry’ era Thom Yorke, but nevertheless that’s our instant reaction. That’s not to say this is at all copyist, it’s a heart-wrenching plea for mental massage that reveals the soul of its creator as a fragile and fractured thing, reaching out for a salvation that never comes. He does sound a bit like Thom Yorke though, but what’s he supposed to do, sing in a funny accent? (NC)
ALBUM: MAX RICHTER • Infra (130701/FatCat)
A thing of beauty is a joy forever, and Max Richter’s haunting piece of classical electronica certainly has us imagining future days in its presence. Originally commissioned by the Royal Ballet as a collabration between Richter, choreographer Wayne McGregor and artist Julian Opie, its standalone strength has led to its dedicated release. It certainly doesn’t need visual accompaniment to succeed – it’s an intensely atmospheric album; the ensemble’s musicianship mixing perfectly with the Eno-isms that envelope it. Not one to play before a big night out perhaps, but a triumph nonetheless. (NC)
SINGLE: SPACE RAIDERS • Greenlights (Space Raiders)
All appeared to have gone quiet with Space Raiders since they parted company with Skint a few years back. But now they’ve popped back up again with a slightly strange gem of a tune, the like of which we like to draw your attention to from time to time. In describing music we’ve heard and you haven’t, it’s inevitable that trite comparisons are brought to the table, and Space Raiders alas do not escape this egregious practice. Imagine a heartfelt Phil Collins ballad, remove all inherent punchability from it, add some real emotion, then stir in essence of Autechre and you’ll end up with this wholly welcome return. (NC)
SINGLE: SUPER U •
A Better Way / I Walk Around (Sack The Juggler)
Ah, we remember reviewing their last single about Cornwall and rather liking it. That’s the case again here, with the trio of folk, indie and sheer pop influences lacing daisies into each other’s hair. Fuzzy guitar jangles bounce along with a loose rhythm section on both the a-side tracks, the second with perhaps more of a reflective tone to its arrangement. It all makes for another perfectly rounded pair of songs from a band whose flag of fortune is due for a definite hoisting. (NC)

BRIGHTON FASHION WEEK
Bigger, bolder and more fabulous, Brighton Frocks is back with a brand new look words by lydia stockbridge Photos by kevin mason at garage studios
Despite the hoards of identikit drones wandering about with their arses hanging out of their jeans, Brighton can justifiably revel in its reputation as a fashionable outreach of London’s city-centric couture industry. Now in its sixth year, Brighton Fashion Week is a solid fixture on the clothing calendar, winning adulation from Grazia and Vogue, and the event’s year-on-year growth has resulted in the best yet – bigger names and headline shows. This year the designers are coming from all across the UK to join the usual local talent – in fact so many rag-stitchers will be showing their collections that there are three catwalk shows. Some of the highlights range from Andrew Bannister’s offbeat
Page 36
menswear label studio_805 in the couture show, to the beautifully boho necklaces of Akong London in ready-to-wear. Director Liz Bishop insists that despite the growth of the show it is, as ever, “always primarily about independent Brighton designers.” A prime example of this is the Trashion Show, celebrating Brighton designer Jez Eaton’s fantastical creations from everyday household objects and pop art packaging. It’s literally rubbish. Brighton Fashion Week are also on the lookout for the style writers of tomorrow, inviting fashionistas to write a piece about their favourite look from the spring/summer 2010 runway collections. The winner will gain a VIP pass to schmooze it up backstage as BFW’s exclusive show blog commentator. Illiterate blaggers aren’t left out in the cold though. At the ready-to-wear show on Saturday the first 100 entrants will receive a free goodie bag. Liz let slip that Irregular Choice purses, handbags and jewellery are all up for grabs. Oops, was that a secret?
Trashion ShowCorn Exchange Thurs 10th
Originally from Brighton, but ditching us for the European TV and music industry for the last 20 years, costume and make-up visionary Jez Eaton has finally returned to our shores. To celebrate her renowned talent BFW has dedicated an entire show to her unique ability to transform everyday household items into elaborate outfits. Her work ranges from 50s swing dresses made from hand-stitched sanitary towels and umbrellas providing voluminously sculptured gowns, to Mars bar wrapper suits and shopping bag dresses. Eaton’s inspirations are garnered from haute couture in silhouette and tailoring, urban street stylings, the romance of historical costume and the nostalgia of Victoriana attire. Always highly visual in colour, the show is also influenced in some instances by the brashness of popular culture in colour and cuts and the fantasy of fairytales.

Couture Show Corn Exchange Fri 11th
Getting away from the idea that the catwalk is just for pouting stick insects to strut up and down, designers showing work at this show have been working with Brighton Fashion Week’s choreographer Charlie Finney to help them create their own signature runway style. Highlights of the show include Nikolo Bertok, who is hailed by some as the future Valentino for his subversive breaking from traditional silhouettes, cuts and influences. The North Laine’s answer to new look-era Dior, Joanne Fleming presents Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil, a bittersweet collection inspired by a recent trip to America’s Deep South – soft floaty angelic gowns and vamp-red seductive frills. Sarina Poppy cites Grimm’s Fairytales as inspiration for her theatrical corsetry, while Rosalind Frances Holmes’ surreal and arresting pieces are just some of the luxurious delights in store.
Ready-To-Wear Show Corn Exchange Sat 12th We could fill this whole page talking about the many chic urban designers showing at the RTW show. Skimming through just a few of the designers lined up, the enticingly patterned womenswear of Ceci Tunn and Kerry Knowles luxe-tailoring for the contemporary hipster about town both leap out. Also worth looking out for is the sumptuous leisurewear from Shoreditch’s Kushion, sassy bold prints from Orleans Design, and adorable kitsch creations from Playsuit Parlour. Shop for your favourites off the catwalk at the fashion market within the Corn Exchange and pamper yourself in the Addicted Cosmetics makeover area for all things hair and beauty. Fashion wannabes can also listen in on workshops and talks from industry experts giving the lowdown on the dos and don’ts of the biz.

Ruby stepped out in quintessentially English tea party attire in pale pastels, florals and a cloche straw hat that reminded us of a young Agatha Christie when we spotted her on the streets of Brighton. With a pale complexion and ever so slightly rouged cheeks that’d make a Harajuku girl jealous, it’s a look so perfected, it’s like staring into the round doe-eyes of a manga doll. A collection of all things heirloom from everywhere thrifty gave Ruby the original vintage feel to her look. A lady who’s savvy with a pair of scissors too, the tattoo on her collarbone a sign of sworn allegiance to the art of DIY craft forever. Pretty hardcore. HAT: “Charity shop near the pavilion I think, we had a rummage through all the hats and found that one” JACKET: “I can’t remember, I’ve had it a long time, just a heavy cotton with lace on the edge” DRESS: “From Topshop, just a t-shirt dress” BAG: “Its an old doctor’s bag, its authentic, lovely, its got all the sections inside” TIGHTS: “They’re from Accessorize, I always incorporate lace with my outfits” SHOES: “Yeah they’re comfy, they’re casual, fitting for a tea outfit” WATCH: “That’s from a thrift store” TATTOOS: “It’s a bow and it’s buttons and a pair of scissors, I sew and customise my own clothes”

Musto Consume
23 MARKET STREET 01273 732677 WORDS BY NICK COQUET
If you want to know about outdoor clothing, best ask someone with an Olympic sailing medal round his neck. Once he was back on dry land in the 60s, Keith Musto branched out and developed a range of technical sailing gear to withstand the most extreme conditions he’d had chucked at him. This led to equestrian and technical shooting ranges that helped Musto become the world’s leading sailing and country sports clothing brand.
Page 42
Now concentrating on their lifestyle ranges, the main focus of the shop, Musto continues to offer top quality, durable and stylish clothing. The nautical theme of the brand’s beginnings is ever-present, with Musto sailing boats a popular brand on classic cuts for the whole year round. Now in-store is the Skandia Team GBR’s official clothing range, with Zara Phillips’ exclusive equestrian collection due in the Autumn. The outdoor enthusiast is definitely well catered for – it’s a one-stop shop for festival warmth and dryness, so you can get out and stay out.

No.10 FATCAT RECORDS Words by nick coquet For the last 13 years FatCat has been a consistent source of musical eclecticism; introducing the world to SigurRos, Múm and Animal Collective as well as working with more established artists like Vashti Bunyan and Björk. We spoke to label boss Dave Cawley. How’s business on the Old Steine? It’s good, FatCat as an entity is 21 this year, and as a label 12 years. Every year we broaden our perspective and the output goes up a notch, the standard gets better and we get better at what we do. Do you consider yourselves a Brighton label or a label based in Brighton? I’d like to say we’re a Brighton label, I’ve never felt anywhere as much as home as here. I feel very proud of the things we do here, like the Brighton Festival – we had a Vashti show, Black Dice Animal Collective, Max Richter – to little things we’ve put on at smaller venues. How was your Great Escape night? It was great, it wasn’t FatCat artists but it was bands we liked, we curated a line-up of Wild Palms, Here We Go Magic, Young Rival and Three Blind Wolves. Your website features a lot of demos people send in – do you actually sign bands from these? Yes, it’s a really big thing for us, picking artists up from demos, be it CDs or mp3s or whatever. It’s something we push, we listen to and reply to every one we receive, anyone who takes the time to send us a CD. We’re using a SoundCloud drop box now – there’s so much amazing music out there that doesn’t get any exposure. It does when they become the next big thing, when all the magazines and the other labels jump on them, but we’re not really interested in that. We want the artists in their early days; we’ve signed a lot of bands like that we’re really proud of. A lot of other record labels don’t even accept demos, they just go in the bin, it’s pretty disgraceful. We might not put their records out but we’ll do anything to help them to spread their music for the good of music and the benefit of creativity. It’s really important for us to champion music whether FatCat benefits from it or not.

In Vino Veritas 103 North Road 01273 622 522 Food 12pm –10.30pm
THE PLACE: We have to admit we’ve walked past In Vino Veritas loads of times and thought it was a just a wine bar. Maybe it’s because we know that the name means “in wine (there is) truth” in Latin. That’s a blag – we don’t know Latin, we just looked it up on Wikipedia. But the place looks like a wine bar if you don’t know there’s a level above and below the street. We settle in upstairs into the cute little bistro and soak up the Gallic feel. THE MEAL: The best thing about reviewing posh restaurants is that by the time you’ve said what you ate half the review is filled. So we tuck into pan fried mackerel with vegetable stir fry, pommes croquettes and sauce vierge (£11.75) which is fresh and crisp all round. The braised lamb shanks
with buttered mash potatoes and bourguignon garnish (£14.35) was tender in rich gravy but the highlight was the cute, tiny onions. That would be enough, but we chose to start with a baby food-like (in a good way) butternut squash soup and homemade bread (£4.25) and some delicately arranged seared scallops with fried new potatoes and rosemary and a creamy duglere sauce (£7.85). Oh yeah, and we finished with chocolate and walnut brownie with vanilla ice cream (£5.25) and strawberry torte with red fruit coulis, rhubarb and strawberry sorbet (£5.50). And there, we’ve run out of room – both in the review and in our tummies. THE VERDICT: We really know we’ve been to In Vino Veritas. For a start we’re stuffed, noticeably heavier for all the opulent food. Luckily our wallets are lighter to balance things out. But that’s not to say that IVV is overpriced – we know there are loads of restaurants knocking out grub of this richness for heart attack-inducing prices. So, a full-on restaurant experience and a fair wedge. WERE WE SUSSED: Oh god yes. So badly. The couple next to us actually straight up asked us what magazine we were writing for. The waiter didn’t say anything but he must have known. Must try harder next time. SOURCE pays for its meals and reviews in secret so we get the same food and treatment as everyone else.

end where you can cool off after the eight-mile ride and wash your body paint off. NC: And the party starts before the ride even begins. NS: Yes, we’ve got a live band at the Level, body painting, and naked lunch before it all kicks off. It’s a whole carnival. words by nick coquet photo by kevin meredith at lomokev.com NC: You don’t actually need to be naked to take part, we should stress. NS: Absolutely, the ethos is ‘bare as you dare’ the city streets are due to fill up with bikes, – if people want to support the ride and not undress then that’s bums, boobs and bollocks – saddle up with cool, or dress down and not expose your genitals that’s also fine. SOURCE and get the skinny on the event. For a first-time rider it can be quite intimidating, so we have two drop-off points along the route so you can undress gradually. Nick Coquet: The ride is promoting three main points – NC: We should point out the Facebook pages. environmental issues, the overwhelming dominance of car NS: Yes, there’s a Facebook event, a group and a page but the culture and cyclists’ vulnerability… event’s probably the best place to go. You can also register on Nick Sayers: That’s right, the ride is a powerful symbol of how the naked bike ride website but it’s not essential. The rides in the vulnerable cyclists are on the road. With ever-increasing car south are all scheduled so they take place on different days, so traffic, people can become scared of cycling in the city, or even you could technically do Southampton on the Friday afternoon, walking. The Naked Bike Ride is about taking the power back then London on Saturday and Brighton on Sunday – there’s a few and showing the fun, freedom and healthiness of cycling. But it’s people who did all three last year. also about just having a jolly good time and celebrating cycling. NC: People don’t seem to have to adapt their bikes much for naked riding. NS: No, not really. People wear shoes, but last year I saw a guy with flip flops bound round his pedals so he wouldn’t even have to do that – a bit of an extreme naturist maybe. When I first did it in 2005 me and my girlfriend thought it would be sore but it’s a myth, even when you’re cycling normally it’s just a thin layer or two of material between you and the saddle after all. NC: And you recommend a high visibility helmet? Sorry, I had to get that in. NS: Yes, well some people’s helmets will be more visible than others (laughs). NC: I suppose the nakedness of the event makes it more of a crowd pleaser, which obviously helps in raising awareness of the issues it’s promoting. NS: I’ve been politically active since I was a kid when my parents took me on CND marches. A lot of demonstrations, however popular they are, can be a bit worthy with solemn people waving placards at passersby who either do or don’t care. But the naked bike ride is a fantastic party, you’re holding up traffic but no one’s pissed off, they’re just completely flabbergasted. NC: And the police are very supportive, shepherding the ride through the city. NS: Yes, they’ve been really supportive since the beginning really. NC: It must be a dilemma for them, what with the indecent exposure issues and that. NS: Well since the 2003 Sexual Offences Act there’s technically no such thing as indecent exposure anymore. As long as you’re not causing harassment, alarm or distress, which would basically mean running for the hills in fear of your life, then being naked in public is pretty much legal. NC: This will be the biggest event yet by all accounts. NS: Yes, the organisers Duncan Blinkhorn, William Morris, Vicky Etheridge, myself and others have increased turnout from 160 riders in 2006 to 700 last year. We’re expecting as many as 1,000 this year. SIX OF THE Best STRANGEST
ROCK DEATHS
WE ALL KNOW ELVIS DIED ON THE PORCELAIN THRONE BUT ROCKERS HAVE croaked IN FAR ODDER CIRCUMSTANCES… WORDS BY THOMAS H GREEN
During the writing of my book Rock Shrines, about dead rock stars and their memorials, I veered towards famous and influential stars cut off in their prime. Along the way, however, I came across some deaths that were odder than others. These would fit an alternate and rather morbid rating system based on the manner in which they’d died. The following, then, may not be household names (with a couple of possible exceptions) but can lay claim to being the most bizarre deaths in rock’n’roll.
STEVE PEREGRINE TOOK
In 1969 Marc Bolan separated from musical partner Steve Peregrine Took, splitting hippy duo Tyrannosaurus Rex. He shortened the band’s name and became a glam rock icon. Took, a friend of both Syd Barrett and Hawkwind, only ever achieved minor success as a cult underground figure. However, he makes this list by dint of death by cocktail cherry. A prodigious drug user, he combined morphine and magic mushrooms to disastrous effect on 27th October 1980 when, under the influence, he accidentally inhaled said cherry into his windpipe.
SAM COOKE
On 11th December 1964 seminal soul legend Sam Cooke, 33, picked up dodgy good time girl Elisa Boyer and took her to a seedy LA motel. Matters then become murky. Boyer claimed Cooke started to get rough so she escaped, taking his clothes, however she was later found to be a scam artist who picked up men, stole their wallets then nicked their clothes to stop them giving chase. Whatever the truth, a raging Cooke, clad only in his coat, confronted the elderly female motel manager. She shot him down and beat him with a broom handle.

JEFF PORCARO
Jeff Porcaro was one of the most technically gifted drummers of the 70s and 80s, yet he’s as often remembered for his death fulfilling the Spinal Tap line about their drummer dying in “a bizarre gardening accident”. A founder member of naff US soft-rockers Toto, Porcaro went on to play on many multi-million-selling records, including Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’. He died aged 38 on 5th August 1992 when he suffered a heart attack induced by accidentally inhaling insecticide while working on his garden.
JEFF BUCKLEY
Influential singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley came to a tragic but peculiar end aged only 30. By May 1997 he’d moved to Memphis, ready to record a follow-up to his debut album, ‘Grace’. On 29th he and friend/roadie Keith Foti drove around looking unsuccessfully for their rehearsal rooms. As dusk approached they parked up near Wolf River where, as Foti’s boombox blasted classic rock, Buckley suddenly, randomly went for a swim while singing Led Zeppelin. He disappeared from Foti’s sight. Six days later his body was found.
‘DIMEBAG’ DARRELL ABBOTT
‘Dimebag’ Darrell Abbott was one of heavy rock’s fieriest guitarists. He made his name with 90s metal masters Pantera but when they split in 2001 Abbott formed another band, Damageplan. On 8th December 2004 as Damageplan played a venue in Columbus, Ohio, Nathan Gale, a schizophrenic ex-Marine who believed Pantera could read his mind, broke into the gig, shot Abbott five times onstage and killed three others before the police eventually shot him dead as he held the band’s drum technician hostage.
TERRY KATH
On the afternoon of 23rd January 1978 Terry Kath, 31-year old guitarist with iffy power ballad merchants Chicago, sat around drinking copiously at the Los Angeles home of his friend and roadie Don Johnson. A gun nut, he kept pulling the trigger of an empty revolver while pointing it at his head. He then did the same with an automatic pistol, explaining first, “Don’t worry, it’s not loaded.” The magazine was, indeed, empty. The chamber wasn’t.
Thomas H Green’s Rock Shrines (Ilex Press) is available now.
