looking good Have you ever been to another city? People in the average municipality don’t dress as well as they do here, do they? But how could they with just chain stores. We’re so lucky in Brighton to have loads of quirky little shops, increasingly good vintage stores and a decent high street for when we need it. Throw in some very talented fashion designers, and more attractive people than one settlement deserves (many of whom are models) and you’ve got a damn fine looking city. So we thought it was time to celebrate our fashionistas with our first proper shoot, dragging the super-skilled Sam Hiscox out of the clubs and handing over six pages to him to showcase some of our favourite Brighton designers by draping their clothes over the gorgeous Bria. It’s local talent from start to finish and if you want to look great this summer it’s a pretty good place to start. Even if you’re not into fashion there’s plenty to learn from Fallow on why all denim is not created equal. We’ve managed to keep all the music and culture previews in the mag for people who’d rather spend their money on records and the like. But those guys have all the worn-in vintage band t-shirts anyway, so they already look great.

SOURCE NEW MUSIC
Putting on even just one gig a year exhausts us and gives us so much appreciation of the hardworking promoters in this town. But we really want to share all the amazing bands we hear, so when the Dome crew asked us to help out with their monthly new bands night at the Pavilion Theatre we couldn’t say no. It’s a win win situation for all concerned – the bands get to play on a decent stage with great acoustics ideal for professional showcasing, and we get to get behind them beyond the pages of the mag. SOURCE New Music starts monthly on Wednesday 8th with the return of Gloria Cycles’ bassist Jennifer Left (pictured), now a delicate solo singer. She’s performing alongside Apples & Eve, whose quiet, spooky yet seductive jazz folk grooves won them many fans at The Great Escape.
EAST COMES TO THE SOUTH
Brighton’s annual celebration of all things Japanese looks like a winner this year, with live bands and singers, sushi-making classes, vintage art shows, origami puppets, films, and anime. The festival ‘hub’ is outside Moshi Moshi, with nightly live music and a weeklong festival vibe including stalls, food stands and impromptu performances. Whether you’re a well-established Japanophile, or just quite like the idea of trying out some raw fish and strange liquors, you’re in for a treat. It runs from Saturday 18th – see brightonjapan.com for details.
SPORT FEST
If you have sporting ambitions but a dull imagination, the TAKEPART Brighton & Hove Festival Of Sport might show you something new. Over 80 different sports and activities are on hand for you to try – from yoga and tai chi to mountain boarding and canoeing, there’s something for all ages and abilities. The opening event is on Saturday 25th in Preston Park, with more

than 15 activity zones to tempt even the most pallid-skinned couch potato. Duncan Goodhew and Sally Gunnell are also there to satisfy your Olympian-gawp requirements.
RADIO PLUG
Radio Reverb 97.2FM is Brighton’s only community radio station on the FM dial, and they’re looking for new programme ideas for their expanding roster. From five-minute shorts to specialist music and live magazine shows with the potential for pretty much everything in between, you could be making radio in Brighton, for Brighton. It’s easier than you’d think to do at home with just a free Audacity download and iTunes, or you could use the Reverb studios – visit the website at radioreverb.com for information on how to get involved.
SUSSEX VARIETY SHOW
The Green Door Store is hosting a new event called Sussex Showcase on Wednesday 15th, taking the concept of a live gig and adding a varied mixture of creative local talent. The Brighton Sausage Company are running a barbecue from 5pm, the Handmade Co-Operative have a pop-up shop and there are exhibitions of work from local artists and illustrators. The music kicks in at 7.30 and features sets from Blind Eyes, the Susie Clark Collective and Faye Houston. It’s a nice idea that shows off our city’s creative quality in a great setting – just what we’re about.
FAIR CORP, GUV
The Fair Corporation is a thriving local business, online at thefaircorp.com, offering fair trade everything – from condoms to footballs with some pretty snazzy footwear somewhere in between. They’ve been involved in sourcing planet-and-peoplefriendly goods for over 30 years now, so are pretty good at spotting both a good design and a good deal for the supplier. We like them for that, and we like that they’re offering the SOURCE reader a 15% discount on footwear, from wellies to trainers and flip flops, to polish up your festival season wardrobe. Use the code SOURCE11 at the website checkout, until June 30th.

NEW IN TOWN
WORDS BY NICK COQUET, james kendall
STICKY MIKE’S FROG BAR
Jam on Middle Street is reborn – we present Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar. Club host luminaries Dynamite Sal and Iain Huddy have taken over, combining it into a cocktail bar, art happening, club and cabaret venue and live music space. Quirky muso nights, grunge and shoegaze plus Brighton legends like Da Doo Ron Ron, Stick It On and the Brighton Rumble boys are all on the horizon, pushing the whole over-the-top, eccentric and bohemian personality that this town lives so large.
ELECTRIC PLAYBOYS
al from vikings of skate
VIKINGS OF SKATE
Dropping in out of nowhere, Vikings Of Skate have already got a great range of t-shirts, full of wit and style. Al, who set the label up with his illustrator wife Sam, has been skating since the 70s, tearing up pools with the likes of Dogtown’s Shogo Kubo and Brit legends including Mad Mark Baker. Thanks to that heritage there’s a great balance of old school with a modern edge. Check out the range of eight limited designs at vikingsofskate.com or pop into Jello on Gardner Street to try them for size.
TATTOO WORKSHOP
OHSO Social have a new Saturday DJ residency for the summer. The Electric Playboys, legends of the Pressure Point parties of the past, are moving in for a weekly heavy bass beach party. Reggae, soul, funk and hip hop soundtrack the sundown while the night proper is greeted with house, electro, breaks and d’n’b, all free til 2am.
Brighton moves one step closer to being the tattoo capital of the UK with the opening of a new studio in Providence Place. Tattoo Workshop has been launched by Stewart Francis, award-winning artist formerly of Angelic Hell, alongside Jed Harwood. It’s a bright, spacious studio with an eclectic display of artwork and the experience to deliver pretty much whatever you’re looking for. See examples of their work at tattooworkshop.co.uk.
STUDIO 111
THE OLD MARKET
STICK IT ON
PLAYGROUP
Brit movie director Jan Dunn is opening a new film-acting summer school – Studio 111 comes to the Hanover Community Hall on Mondays and Tuesdays from July 25th, and aims to help actors’ preparation for screen work. Maevefilms.com/Studio111 has the details.
Stick It On have branched out to provide some have-a-go wedding reception entertainment. With help on hand if required, now everyone from your nan to your funny uncle can get on the ones and twos while bridesmaids and pageboys run about waving ‘Choon’ signs. It all gets organised at the invite stage, and they supply all the sound equipment. Why didn’t they think of it before? Search out the Facebook page for more info.
Page 6
Having been closed for a whole year, The Old Market in Hove has re-opened courtesy of the people behind beat behemoths Stomp. It’s had a major refurbishment and has already cut its teeth as a premier arts venue during the Festival and Fringe, not least hosting Kevin Meredith’s SOURCE Street Style exhibition. Check theoldmarket.com for June’s events.
Hector’s House on Grand Parade has been taken over by fest-in-a-club party hosts Playgroup, after facing closure for some time. It’s a great live venue and now all bar profits are being ploughed back into the creative community via funding for small-scale creative ideas, which we think’s really cool check playgroupbrighton.org for info and listings.

BATTLES
Concorde 2 Fri 3rd
Their genre-smashing math rock monolith ‘Atlas’ may have floored anyone with ears back in 2007 but it took Muse to actually make some money out of it with their comeback single ‘Uprising’. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, apparently, but it seems Tyondai Braxton, perhaps the most recognisable member of the Warp-signed US experimental rock collective, didn’t quite see it that way. He quit the band last summer, ahead of the equally bold new album, ‘Gloss Drop’. Expect to hear it being ripped off on a TV ad soon. (BG) See Club Previews for Battles’ after party details featuring Clark and Bibio.
HERMAN DUNE
Coalition 5th
They seldom stay away from Brighton for too long but since the Neil Young-loving anti-folk duo last brought their band over from Paris lots has changed. They’ve set up their own record label, Strange Moosic, released a album of the same name and got Mad Men’s John Hamm to drive a cute blue yeti to one of their gigs in one of the loveliest videos of the year (find it on hermandune. com). Live they’re a similar delight, personifying the charm of their timeless records. (JK)
JAMIE WOON
Concorde 2 Weds 8th
Can the artistry of pop music be taught? Not in a classical sense but via the rather more prosaic confines of a classroom? Given the recent chart success of the likes of Adele, Jessie J and Katy B, we have to conclude that the BRIT School is onto something. Jamie Woon is another graduate, who recently co-opted the production skills of dubstep godhead Burial to sculpt his wellreceived debut album ‘Mirrorwriting’. No wonder fellow former alumni Amy Winehouse is going back to resit her GCSEs. (BG)

LITTLE BARRIE
Prince Albert Sun 12th
Taking a well-earned day off from his duties as Primal Scream’s lead guitarist, Barrie Cadogan reassembles his power trio Little Barrie for a string of gigs. Setting aside their impressive list of collaborations, which include Morrissey, Edwyn Collins and Paul Weller, they’ll be brandishing their usual mash-up of dirty garage rock and laidback blues delivered with a soulful touch. A perfect intimate setting for their raw and unrefined rock‘n’roll, just how it should be. (LL)
JAMES BLAKE
Komedia Mon 13th
Edged out of first place in the BBC’s Sound Of 2011 survey, James Blake is hardly aligning himself with the same territory as winner Jessie J. While a startling cover of Feist’s ‘Limit To Your Love’ turned many heads, much of his selftitled debut album was bereft of any such anthemic intent, taking even that song’s sparse wonder and digging further into the flickering sonic twilight. A masterclass in finding soul power in empty spaces, tonight might well sound like the best coma you’ve ever had. (BG)
FRANK FAIRFIELD Prince Albert Weds 15th
Last seen on these shores in September last year as touring partner to Charlie Parr, Frank Fairfield looks and plays as if he’s crawled straight out of the Virginia mountains in a previous century, armed with only a guitar, fiddle, banjo and a whole bunch of soaring hillbilly stompers and murder ballads. With a new album just released on the esteemed Tompkins Square label, expect to be hearing a lot more of Frank Fairfield in the coming months. (IC)

Las robertas Green Door Store Thurs 16th
Costa Rica is so politically stable that they’ve disbanded the army! Amazing! Also amazing, and also Costa Rican, are Las Robertas – a gang of four garage girls from San Jose who make like a duel in the South American sun between the 5,6,7,8s and the Vivian Girls over who likes the Ronettes more. So that’s two amazing things you know about Costa Rica. Support tonight is from Brighton’s even more wonderfully lo-fi La La Vasquez. (MB)
TOM VEK
Concorde 2 Sat 18th
He’s been away from the pop’n’roll bearpit for a common sense and career-threatening five years, and boy, has Tom Vek changed. The video to his comeback single ‘A Chore’ suggested he’d spunked the winnings from his debut album on a pair of boobs and a nice blonde hairdo. Happily, SOURCE can confirm model stand-in Abigail Rose is just the front for a bash’n’bleep tour de force, confirming you don’t have to be playing dubstep to make a refreshing one-man noise in 2011. Yes, we have sound. (BG)
MAC •
Prince Albert Mon 20th
If you haven’t caught one of MAC’s brash post-rock sets yet, you probably need to get out more. Tight as a fat man’s belt and with the energy of 20 drunk teenagers, the Brighton threepiece bust out energetic instrumentals with a gleeful ire and just a little bit of shouting. In a line-up alongside Chicago grunge rockers All Eyes West, psych rockers Bears, and live looping from Rebecca Dyer, this could well be the best £3 you ever spent. (DC)
TUNE-YARDS The Haunt Tues 21st
An untameable musical talent, New England-born, Oaklandbased artist Merrill Garbus recently issued her second album, ‘Whokill’. Merging splintered, polymath skills into a jaggededge whole, the old school lo-fi power of the tribal collides
Page 10
with the fresh, digitised hi-fi sound of the street that’s at once furiously challenging and thrilling. Quite how this will be replicated live is anyone’s guess but SOURCE can only conclude she must be the result of a peculiar tryst between Pro Tools and the contents of Captain Beefheart’s mind. (BG)
RYAN ADAMS
Dome Weds 22nd
Despite sustaining a very decent career for some years now, Ryan Adams hasn’t really seeped into general public consciousness with a signature song or big crossover hit. This might leave the casual observer unsure of what to shout out for in the encore, so we suggest ‘Summer Of ‘69’ or ‘Run To You’, largely because we know for an actual fact that it really pisses him off and is likely to lead to your forced ejection. If you’re not up for that challenge though, you might just dig this acoustic traversing through his catalogue of alt.countryisms. (NC)
DAVID FORD
Komedia Weds 22nd
Following the early noughties chart success of his band Easyworld, Eastbourne singer-songwriter David Ford revealed his mild, self-deprecating streak by calling his first solo album ‘I Sincerely Apologise For All The Trouble I’ve Caused’. Heavy bouts of touring have established Ford’s sensitive, politicised songs and loop-assisted performances as a cult act on both sides of the Atlantic. Ford looks like he’s writing himself off with tonight’s mix of music and anecdotes, but at 33 he’s not yet a has-been. (SH)
MICHAEL BALL Brighton Centre Sun 26th
Those for whom sanitary hygiene products are a distant memory will find unthreatening comfort in the showtune stylings of Michael Ball this evening. Immortalising the works of his musical heroes from past and present, this show is unlikely to take in much of the Steve Albini canon, or overly indulge the legacy of Einstürzende Neubauten. More likely, it’ll be a predictable, button-busting bellow through the sort of stodge that the hard-of-thinking lap up on TV talent shows. Basically, it’s Elaine Paige with a slightly deeper voice. CYNDI LAUPER
gig previews
Dome Sat 28th
Girls just want to have fun. But so do 57-yearold women, judging by the recent antics of Cyndi Lauper, who seems in no mood to put her most famous moment to bed. She’s still taking every opportunity to tear through the landmark anthem for non-stop, all-girl tomfoolery, recently playing it with Arcade Fire at a US festival, shortly after a rather more bizarre performance over an Argentinian airport tannoy. When’s she gonna live her life right? Not tonight in Brighton, that’s for sure. (BG)
CINEMATIC ORCHESTRA Concorde 2 Thurs 30th
If you ever find yourself talking to someone who thinks jazz is irrelevant, “Cinematic Orchestra!” is what you should shout, before flouncing away to speak to someone with better music taste. Over their considerable history this band have reinvented the genre into something hauntingly beautiful, undeniably hook-laden and inexpressibly relevant. This event will showcase the full live band, so expect to spend the evening in slack-jawed awe. Kutmah, our favourite LA import, is supporting with a set of wonky, futuristic beats. (JMM)

CLARK & BIBIO Concorde 2 Fri 3rd
As the more eagle-eyed of you will have noticed, this is the after party for the Battles gig, and John Stanier from Battles will be spinning some tunes himself this evening. More exciting than that though is a rare appearance from Bibio, whose new album ‘Mind Bokeh’ is wooing all and sundry with its summery Beck-isms and sing-song melodies. Topping the bill, and the excitement levels, is one-time Brighton resident Clark, who has been signed to Warp since his teens and knows more about dance floor ecstasy than almost anyone else on the planet. (MB)
13 MONSTERS • The Loft Sat 4th
We’d heard rumours that 13 Monsters was running close to its Logan’s Run-style self-inflicted time limit, then they told us that they were having too much fun to quit. But now, bang, the news comes that Brighton’s best genre-crossing leftfield indie/dance/hip hop night has just one more outing. Damn, way to rip that plaster off. Expect queues around the block for this one so get there early – not least cos there’s a free tape and we can’t imagine the boys sitting by their tape2tape ghetto blasters all month. Even with high-speed dubbing they’ll surely run out of time for everyone coming. (JK)
PUSSYCAT CLUB Digital Sat 4th
Happy 16th birthday Pussycats – an incredible feat, not least in coming up with new themes (we make it almost 200 so far). This time out it’s Sonic Circus, with a trapeze artist, circus showgirls and what they describe as cute clowns. Not the evil ones, thank god. But much of the spectacle comes from the crowd itself. The dress

HORSE MEAT DISCO
Audio Fri 3rd
If you believe Resident Advisor (and hey, who are we to argue?), HMD is the most important disco club night in the world. Although their sets regularly include deep house, Italo and acid, the vast majority of what you will hear is truly great underground disco, both old and nu-. If you’ve ever stumbled into what appeared to be a very dark, derelict New York nightclub staffed by Alig-esque trannies at the collective’s festival-touring NYC Downlow venue, you’ll know that it’s worth a trip… in more ways than one. (MB)
BAILEY, STORM & RANDALL Volks Thurs 9th
Now that we live firmly in the future, it’s all too common to see DJs playing either with CD-burned MP3s or on time-coded, laptop-based technology, but this night is dedicated to a glorious vinyl-only commitment. It only seems right that the three acts playing tonight are kingpins (and a queenpin, we suppose) of the drum’n’bass scene, and we expect to see them all bowed beneath the weight of gigantic record bags bursting with old school jungle records. (JMM)
UNDERGROUND REBEL BINGO CLUB

To celebrate their fourth Birthday, the Blah Blah Blah DJs are showing they’ve still got their fingers firmly on the electronic pulse. Although in its infant stages as a label, Night Slugs is quickly growing into a confident young adult with upfront club music and developing team of artists. Last year saw a succession of 12” releases, each one sonic circles of gold establishing them as pioneers of UK and US bass music. POP NOT POP Green Door Store Sat 11th
So many pop nights these days, but which to choose? Well, the equation is simple – good tunes are good tunes, but cheesy toss is bad. So although the Cheeky Girls are pop, they will never darken the Store’s Green Door. On the other hand, 2Pac, SBTRKT and The Romantics sit comfortably shoulder to shoulder at PNP because, yes, they have some proper tunes. So to recap, (good) Pop, Not (shit) Pop. See? (JK)

Haunt Fri 24th
The last Friday of the month sees The Haunt rammed to the gunnels for this celebration of all things 60s. Pop classics sit next to northern soul and garage classics, in fact all genres with a release date of 60-69 get a look in. They play requests off their Facebook wall too, which is cool. With cult movies shown on the big screen and a retro dress-up crowd, this is a proper 60s night out. Lambretta parking round the back. (NC)
STRICTLY DRUMZ Audio Fri 24th
In 1992, at the tender age of 16 and under his early moniker of DJ Dextrous, J Majik released ‘6 Million Ways To Die’ which became an instant inclusion on all the headline sets for One Nation, Dreamscape and Bojangles. This dark jungle roller announced his entry onto the scene and got the attention of Goldie who soon signed him to the Metalheadz label. Now nearly 20 years later, J Majik’s playing with regular collaborator Wickaman so expect a diverse and enduring night of quality drum‘n’bass. (ZC)

Life Fri 24th
House-y dance-floor filler Claude VonStroke is bringing his allround American enthusiasm to town, and with booming hits such as ‘Who’s Afraid Of Detroit’ in his back catalogue, we can expect a wild fusion of driven basslines, whooping vocals and a club full of energised techno fans throwing shapes, limbs and, probably, drinks in all directions. He’s joined by Pearson Sound, formerly known as Ramadanman, who’s responsible for some of Hessel Audio’s most well received releases in the last 12 months. After listening to his knockout Boiler Room sets we can’t wait to catch him at Life. (JMM/ZC)

If their album is anything like the snippets of tracks up on their MySpace then it’s going to be a spectacular collection of sunshine grooves and summer beats. (ZC)
PHOTEK
Tube Sat 25th
Now it’s all the rage for electronic producers to score movies; Daft Punk did Tron, The Chemical Brothers did Hanna. As if drum’n’bass legend Photek needed more proof that he’s a forward-thinking veteran, but we just discovered he worked on the soundtrack to The Animatrix back in 2003. His desolate paranoid productions lent themselves particularly well to the Matrix spin-off, and with new EP ‘Avalanche’ in his record bag we expect he’ll transform The Tube into an otherworldly club full of ethereal fear and dark rollers for a set that crosses dubstep and house. We can’t blinkin’ wait. (ZC)

It’s a balmy evening in early May as the sun bleeds into the hazy horizon behind the West Pier, printing its stencilled wreckage on the crimson sky. There’s a spring wind biting our necks but not enough to threaten this late evening club night. Dirty Sunset Disco brings Ibiza to Brighton’s seafront for clubbers who can’t afford a holiday to the dance music mecca. With its heated outside terrace, massive disco balls and a re-edit of Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’ emanating from OHSO Social’s speakers everyone is in high spirits. The dancefloor’s full of flapper dresses, trilby hats and pearl necklaces so we knock back a quick Makers Mark before joining in with the finger snapping and toe tapping. Upstairs there’s a roulette table where you can waste a buck if you’re able to tear yourself away from the lindyhopping sounds of The Swing Ninjas. Next up are electro swing band Sweet Life Society. Although they’re awesome, despite some technical difficulties, their dubstep jazz fusion takes us out of the speakeasy spell. Almost 10 years into his stand-up career, and after a few 24-hourlong shows and literally millions of appearances on Mock The Week, Mark Watson is bringing his tangent-rich observational comedy to Brighton. And it’s not because he loves seagulls, or because he thinks our BHS has a good menswear section, but because the Welshman invited his fans to suggest destinations for his tour. As a result, he’s heading straight from his New Zealand tour to the dizzy heights of Chorley, Aldershot and beyond, as well as this seaside visit. Nice guy. He’s funny too. (DC)

The Creation Records story will inevitably acquire dramatic embellishment over the years, and one suspects anything that adds to its rock’n’roll legend will suit boss Alan McGee just fine. His stewardship of the label over the years is easier to deify in the wake of his discovery of Oasis, but it could just as easily gone very badly wrong. Massive overspends (My Bloody Valentine) combined with a dogged determination to back unbankable acts (Momus) make it a somewhat rocky road, but one that at least some came out of smiling. (NC)
FILM: THE LOST BOYS Duke Of York’s Thurs 9th
Fuck Twilight, The Lost Boys is the ultimate teen vampire movie. Kiefer Sutherland’s gang of blood-sucking bikers are about as gnarly as the undead get, like Billy Idol’s backing band gone feral. Meanwhile the two Coreys (Haim and Feldman) brilliantly showcase the comedic talent they would soon throw away with drug addictions. And the soundtrack – wow. It’s got a bare-chested, longhaired sax player parping next to a burning oil drum. As if training for his Jack Bauer role later in life Kiefer made the whole film with a broken hand, hiding it in leather gloves. Hardcore. (JK)

COMEDY: RICHARD HERRING Caroline of Brunswick Weds 8th
A prolific month of comedy upstairs at everyone’s favourite gothic temple, where Edinburgh previews come thicker and faster than a rugger buggers’ night out down West Street. Radio 4 fixture Richard Herring pursues enlightenment by adding love to his previous rants on religion, politics and penises. Support act Catie Wilkins’ dad wouldn’t approve – he stuck two fingers up at love during the 1960s and became an accountant for Tesco. She’s basing a show around him, but she ain’t following in his footsteps. (BM)
THEATRE: BEAR TRAP Nightingale Mon 13th
Bear Trap’s seaweed-strewn tale of a desperate trip to the high seas saw them marked out as a young company to watch at Edinburgh last year, and their penchant for a sparse set and plenty of physicality should chime well with the Nightingale setting. The tale of a shambolic crew making one last trip out onto the ocean in an attempt to stave off bankruptcy on the shores of Devon is grippingly, elegantly told – sea shanties and all. (BM)
THEATRE: ERIC’S TALES FROM THE SEA Caroline of Brunswick Weds 15th
It’s not every month you find a show governed by the Official Secrets Act submerged within these humble pages, but Eric – he won’t tell us his surname, because he

can’t for obvious legal reasons – is the thinking man’s thesp to see this month. He spent 17 years in the Royal Navy before becoming a stand-up comic, and his stories of submarines, sonar and solitude are told with a gentle wit which makes them rare and funny. Just watch out for the beards and sharks. (BM)
THEATRE: FIRST LOVE Pavilion Theatre Thurs 16th – Fri 17th
Conor Lovett is an outstanding and renowned Beckett performer, widely applauded for his old-before-his-time expressionism, gurning and arching and clowning his way through. His Cork tones gliding effortlessly, his ability to compel his audience is almost peerless. Last autumn he performed The End at the Dome – this time he returns with the writer’s early short prose, a tragicomic disaster of black humour and startling grimness. Lovett seems to adapt and evolve with every Beckett piece he takes on, so this is a real treat. (BM)
ART: RYAN CALLANAN Ink_d from Fri 17th
For those who knew RYCA for his large-scale sculpture of an acid house smile or kaleidoscopic prints of fluttering hearts (the no less hedonistically-themed Love is the Drug), he returns to Ink_d under his new, less abbreviated name. For The Symbols Won’t Save Us, the model and sign maker fuses traditional techniques with modern effigies and emblems, jogging the memory and yanking the familiar into unfamiliar territories. His subversively-toned knack for a visual hit promises a sugar rush of a solo show. (BM)
THEATRE: THE SERVANT
New Venture Theatre Sat 18th – Sat 25th Class manipulation, psychological mind games, role reversal, immorality, sexual decadence… It could be this play or it could simply be your fate if you stumble blind into any house party in the New Venture vicinity after the Saturday night runs of this eagerly anticipated take on Robin Maugham’s most famous piece. With that listing written, you should also know this one’s about a toffeenosed socialite returning to a townhouse in Chelsea picked by his mate, and their subsequent implosive dealings with a manservant. Ooh-err. (BM)
THEATRE: THE CONFETTI MAKER Pavilion Theatre Fri 24th
Improvisational clown Frank Wurzinger is a master of the mundane, doing stupid things with paper which make his decision to portray the life of a confetti factory worker a perfect fit. Taking the idea of cutting-edge theatre to a literal conclusion, he perforates and shreds his way to a circumspection of the dreams of your everyday factory optimist. Wurzinger’s storytelling panache is engrossing enough to resound, but it’s his skill as a physical performer which makes him brilliant. (BM)

BRIGHTON’S BEST NEW MUSIC WORDS BY IAN CHAMBERS, NICK COQUET, STUART HUGGETT, james kendall

EP: AMBASSADEURS • EP (soundcloud.com/ambassadeurs)
Three tracks arrive in a Soundcloud player, and we’ve rarely seen so many positive comments along the waveforms for an unreleased EP. ‘Fly By Night’ opens with swathes of glitchy, downtempo dubstep, while ‘Hot Foot’ has a hypnotic, decidedly Aphex Twin funk about it. ‘M.O.P.E.’ again recalls a Richard James approach to vocal oddity, with a female lead put through an electronica mangle that wrings out the sinister to leave an oddly attractive sound. It’s looking for a commercial release – it certainly deserves one. (NC)
SINGLE: CLOWNS •
ALBUM: THE ROBOT HEART • The Robot Heart (Bleeding Heart)
Idiot Bouncing (Lynched Recordings)
Already one of the best live bands in town, Clowns finally unleash their debut single, and it’s quite something – an urgent, melodic collision of guitars and caustic punk. ‘Idiot Bouncing’ simply explodes at you, lurching along on a demented guitar riff, while ‘Trousers’ is full of sweaty garage rock swagger. Their sound is darkly playful, gloriously dirty and loud, like a perverted Sparks with their amps cranked all the way up to 11. Brighton, beware, Clowns are here. (IC)
ALBUM: STEVE MAC • Roots (Saved)
through the song alongside nicely understated strings, propelled along by a driving indie rock beat and a haunting vocal. There’s no ‘edgy’ artifice here, it’s just a superlative exercise in how to get it right – hopefully it will get the chance to shine in a wider arena. (NC)
We sift through a lot of new music at SOURCE, but we instantly remembered The Robot Heart from an EP we reviewed last year. This fully realised album continues in a similar vein – rejoicing in lush vocal harmonies, pastoral acoustics and orchestration. If you want a visual metaphor, it’s music for a camper van journey on a sunny day, arm out of the window in the breeze as the songs unwittingly soundtrack a laidback, feelgood movie playing only in your head. It actually is, trust us. (NC)
ALBUM: VARIOUS
Messthetics #108: South Coast D.I.Y. ’77-81 (Hyped To Death)
Massachusetts’ Hyped To Death has diligently unearthed lost recordings by hundreds of forgotten UK and US acts operating in the punk aftermath. This wonderful CD sweeps the coast from Bournemouth to Brighton, dredging up cruddy cassette demos, obscure compilation appearances and ferociously lo-fi live tapes. Apart from Attrix Records’ ubiquitous Left (soundcloud.com/weareblahblahblah) Vaultage LPs, little of Wow. Right out the gate, this long time DJ this stuff was actually squad are giving Carl Craig a run for his money. heard outside Brighton Yeah, really. A slow-building piece of tech at the time, let alone electro, it starts with a similar feel to the techno since (the excellent god’s ‘Falling Up’ remix before subtly switching Punk History Of Brighton up a notch building layers and layers of tense website aside). A micro melodies. There’s a huge prog payoff at fascinating glimpse into the end as the tunes expand and soar. We’re the past. (SH) betting on this being a huge club hit. (JK)
House and techno are about to cross over again. That might seem strange when they haven’t really gone away. Steve Mac has been nailing this stuff for years so an LP that travels from the hip house and Chink St acid to Sneak-style jackin’ disco cut-ups is aptly timed. If you want a history lesson that has the immaculate sonic construction of a studio master like Mac then you’ve certainly come to the right place. Every track is aimed at dancefloor destruction. (JK)

STARE
Lighthouse Gallery, Kensington St Sat 4th – Thurs 9th
WORDS BY NICK COQUET PHOTO BY JESSICA MORRIS
Brighton’s always attracted photographic creativity – there are plenty of people out there who bother to look beyond the West Pier in their viewfinders – and the University of Brighton Photography Show marks both ends and beginnings for its graduates. The exhibited works are, inevitably for many, the last chance to show work uninhibited by commercial leanings, as well as the beginning of their photographs’ life under public scrutiny. Part of the Uni’s Faculty of Arts graduate shows, the 2011 photography exhibition is entitled Stare – held at the Lighthouse Gallery for the first time. Elsewhere across the Grand Parade and Pavilion Parade sites, graduates from courses including Architecture, Fashion, Fine Art, Performance, Arts History and more are all worthy competitors for your attention. We’ve seen a selection of the Stare photographs already and it looks like another great year for Brighton photography. Fake portraits, folklore, lingual heritage, mythical beasts, mental illness and the similarities between women and wolves are among the subjects mused over in a disparate showcase. As the 80s turned into the 90s, hip hop was fun. De La Soul brought in the D.A.I.S.Y. Age and all of a sudden the genre was filled with sunshine and good vibes and positivity from the likes of A Tribe Called Quest and The Pharcyde. Basically hip hop went hippie. But over in Compton dark forces were taking hold and NWA’s gangsta rap persuaded that if you weren’t ‘keeping it real’ – that is talking about how many people you shot this morning – you weren’t representing the culture. Soon the grumbling violence of 50 Cent was the norm and you were lucky if Eminem or Odd Future gave you a chuckle. Even Britain has signed up to the misery with our love of grime.
Sure, current single ‘A Prophet (Better Watch It)’ might claim that “Dennis is not even half what this menace is” but they’re much more believable when they’re personifying smoking as a femme fatale on ‘Miss Cigarette’, or worrying, on ‘Down With The Trumpets’, about getting “grass stains on my new trainers”. Which is good, because the music is so alive with what it feels like to be young. With a love of mariachi brass and as much affection for indie and pop as they have for beats, their hookladen songs feel like they’re pulling the sunshine from the sky. If it’s going to be the long hot summer the front page headlines are promising, Rizzle Kicks are going to be the soundtrack.
But from an unlikely city comes a new era of the D.A.I.S.Y. Age. Rizzle Kicks are two Brightonian teenagers full of charm, humour and smiles who rap about their lives in a way that makes you want to hang out with them rather than run a mile.
And it’s not just us who think so. Radio 1 have already started writing love letters to the band, with ‘Prophet’ getting the BBC Introducing pat on the back of sticking them on the playlist. “We’re so happy about that,” beams Jordan, the rapping half

got introduced on stage by MistaJam and congratulated after our performance by Reggie Yates, so it was pretty beneficial for us. It was definitely an important step and the crowd were wicked.” But it’s easy to work out why they’re so adored live. Even playing to the industry crowd of the Great Escape launch, they still had the whole room jumping. Loose enough to not worry about having too much fun, they’re tight enough to keep the songs sounding great. They joke and bicker onstage (“Brighton is our town,” claims Jordan before quickly correcting himself. “Oh, we just live here, we don’t own it or anything”), and their easy charm is infectious. It’s a nice little set-up too. Brighton trumpet player Chris is joined by Lou, an 18-year-old former metal drummer who Rizzle Kicks found on Facebook, and a bass player who lurks away from the spotlight and turns out to be Jordan’s dad. “We’ve made a massive leap from doing acoustic sets, or before, when I used to plug in my laptop,” says Jordan. “It’s a good vibe.” And it is a good vibe, but they’re just as arresting backed with an acoustic guitar and a trumpet on Channel 4’s T4 Loft, or with Harley strumming away with Jordan spitting over a stripped-down take on Queen’s ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’. Clearly they’re not the average hip hop outfit. It’s undoubtedly helped by the fact that both had eclectic musical upbringings. Before Harley came onboard Jordan used to rap over instrumentals by bands as diverse as Arctic Monkeys, Christina Aguilera and Cyprus Hill. It’s something that has carried right through with a cover of Jessie J’s ‘Price Tag’ being a key part of their live set. The fact that they’re mates who go all the way back to primary school gives their songs an extra believability; that the tales of everyday exploits are what they actually get up to when they’re together. There are also practical benefits too. “The fact that me and Harley are really good mates is hugely beneficial,” ponders Jordan, “firstly because we don’t argue a lot. The way our personalities work is like yin and yang. We can get frustrated with each other. I think I’m a bit of a control freak and he knows that – we know how each other works.”

of the duo. “But our first Radio 1 play wasn’t even as a result of that. Fearne Cotton is a supporter, which is an unbelievable thing to have at this stage. She follows us on Twitter and all sorts!” “Our management said that she might play ‘Prophet’ on her show, but we weren’t sure,” explains singer Harley. “I was on the train but I didn’t have my headphones so I had to listen to it over the speaker. People were telling me to shut up, but I was like, ‘Wait, just wait!’ I had to listen to it blaring out of my phone while people around me were trying to sleep. But then when it came on I was like so happy it was a joke.” It doesn’t end there either. After playing four gigs in 24 hours for The Great Escape – including SOURCE and Made In Brighton’s official launch party – they rushed off for Radio 1’s Big Weekender, one of the most star-studded line-ups of the event to date. “It was fricking awesome,” Jordan says of the experience. “We
www.brightonsource.co.uk/BANDS
Also important is their embracing of YouTube as the channel to get their tracks out there. The visual side of the band is so important, with each song having its own video – from the narrative of ‘Miss Cigarette’’s redheaded temptress, to the jaw-dropping light painting of the live animation that accompanies ‘Prophet’. They’re all made off their own bat, something that impressed Island Records enough to snap them up at a time when major labels are more likely to sign their own death warrant than sign
a new act. “The short story is that YouTube got us a record deal,” Jordan explains. “We made the song ‘Down With The Trumpets’ and put it on our MySpace last February and, well, people liked it but no one really said that much about it. Then we made a video and people seemed to understand what we’re about more.” “Even the label are wanting us to visualise as much of our music as possible,” says Harley. “Apparently it brings the song out completely. YouTube, for us, gets across the vibe of our music a lot more than just listening to a track would.” So we guess we’d better leave the last words to the boys themselves. Anything they want to say? “Yeah,” considers Jordan. “Shout out…fucking Brighton. Shout out Running Dogs. Shout out Twin Brother.” “Shout out Frosty Jacks,” adds Harley. “Yeah, shout out Frosty Jacks,” concludes Jordan. “Keeping my mates pissed since 2004.”

BRIGHTON FASHION WEEK WORDS BY NICK COQUET, JAMES KENDALL Photo By Kevin Mason
Brighton’s worldwide reputation as an essential creative hub plays another trump card this month with the annual showcase of its eclectic and diverse array of fashion talent. Brighton Fashion Week has come a long way from the Brighton Frocks days of a single show in the Honey Club and now spans four days with catwalk struts for all tastes. From the wild concepts of some of the Brighton Frocks Show though the intricately-crafted Couture Show to the affordable and wearable Ready To Wear outing there are clothes for all tastes. “Brighton is a city with a sure sense of itself,” says director of BFW Liz Jones. “Its residents are discerning, with a cool, alternative approach to fashion. Brighton Fashion Week is reflective of this and is a real showcase of innovative, edgy design.” Indeed. Here’s what’s going on.
WAR CHILD BENEFIT Concorde 2 Weds 1st
Who says fashion is superficial and self-interested? Rock’s favourite charity comes to the Concorde for a Fashion Week benefit gig in aid of kids living in warzones (no, not to buy them Hermès scarves). La Shark, The Agitator and Dark Horses have promised to turn up and tune up to help children living in real danger. Meanwhile Nick Hollywood is doing a White Mink AV show while Brighton Rumble and Born Bad will spin the tunes. Just don’t lose a Mui Mui shoe in the moshpit.
THE BRIGHTON FROCKS SHOW St Martin’s Church Thurs 2nd
Thursday 2nd sees the return to an ecclesiastical setting for the show that started Brighton Fashion Week off all those years ago, as St Martin’s Church fills out with this traditionally dramatic and theatrical performance. Off the wall designer collections are showcased in an unconventional manner in a unique fusion of styles and eras.
Page 30
Previous years have been really eye-opening with a frequent knowing wink. For 2011 the line-up of stitchers includes Red Mutha, Former Glory, Susannah Henly and many more.
THE COUTURE SHOW St Martin’s Church Fri 3rd
This one looks like being really interesting for Brighton University students and anyone who’s seriously into fashion. Giles Deacon’s pattern cutter Masato Jones will be showcasing the new collection for his own label. He’s joined by Edward Finney who has worked both on Savile Row and with Alexander McQueen. Brighton makes an appearance in the form of Alexei Ismaylov, while Tim Rhys Evans – who had his degree collection featured in Elle – will show why the British Fashion Council gave him the Creative Cutting Award at Graduate Fashion Week in 2008. On the other end of the scale is Jess Eaton with her roadkill couture (yeah, it’s just what you think) and Studio_805’s Club Kids-go-toTaboo cartoon outfits.
READY TO WEAR Corn Exchange Sat 4th
If that all sounds a little daring for you then try this one on for size. With catwalk collections from up-andcoming national designers – including Eva Cammarata, Alexander Murray and Coco Sailor – this afternoon will concentrate on chic yet accessible fashions. All exhibitors at the RTW show are also hosting retail stands at the attached Fashion Emporium, where attendees can snap up the most covetable items from the show. No waiting months for the next season clothes to arrive here, you can wear the stuff home – now that really is accessible.

You don’t get very far in men’s fashion without stumbling across Peggs & Son. Not only are they Brighton’s stockist of Fallow Denim (see page 50), you can also find Daniel here behind the counter advising people on some of the best clothes in the city. No wonder his understated American college ensemble caught our eye while we were roaming the alleys of The Lanes. With clothes that whisper quality rather than scream with logos and prints, it’s a stylishly subtle take on Baltimore’s oversized white t-shirt look that’s crept right through the skate and hip hop scenes and is now edging into the mainstream. But is he always baggy? “It depends how I feel when I wake up in the morning,” Daniel admits. “Today I felt like being a bit more loose, a bit street, a bit more relaxed. It depends on which day you catch me on.” A big fan of British labels like Folk (“They always have really nice twists or an added detail”), he also saves a place on his body for Brighton imprints like Fallow and Heritage Research. “There’s a lot of different styles in Brighton, which is nice,” says the former Londoner when asked whether Brighton is a well-dressed city. “And I think there’s a couple of cats that are really stylish. It’s a good place for being individual.” Air Force 1 trainers by Nike “They’re a classic shoe, an iconic Nike shoe. I’ve got a lot of trainers and I rotate them so they don’t really get too messed up.” Jeans by Nudie “They’re the Average Joe version. I’m just a big fan of Nudies – I like everything that’s Scandinavian. I’ve got different looks and today I preferred a baggier take.” T-shirt by Vans “I’m a big fan of white t-shirts, I don’t really like stuff with images on the front at the moment anyway. I like the skater style, like the jeans oversized.” Jacket by Alife “I love all the varsity jackets, I love the streetwear stuff. It’s a cotton one so it’s good for summer cos normally you have the leather sleeves. It’s a nice classic understated jacket.” Bag by Duluth “It’s a collaboration with Heritage Research, from the people behind Trainerspotter, who are from Brighton. I like the whole preppy Ivy League look.”

Fashion always looks to its past for inspiration, but since July 2010 Tramp Vintage Boutique have almost been working the other way round – eyeing the catwalks for current trends and finding the original equivalent pieces, unadulterated by the 21st century. It’s not designer-led, rather what fits for the current season with an emphasis on colour, style, shape, fit and material.

The boutique’s customer base of students, young mums and holidaymakers can get high-end ladieswear at sensible prices, with dresses from £25 and costume jewellery pieces from £10. Big at the moment is everything 70s, but there’s a gingham’n’straw revival just around the corner, so it’s a good time to Tramp down to Trafalgar Street.

Words by Gary Scattergood Photos by nima elm, hazel mccoubrey, rob orchard, sam hiscox, jon southcoasting
With more than 300 bands playing at 30 Brighton venues over three days, there’s certainly a lot of venue hopping and ever-growing queues as packed out clubs and bars operate a one-in-one-out policy. But fortune favours the brave… Two Wounded Birds were first up at Hector’s House, delightfully droning over dense and cutting guitars, then firing through shouty and spiky pop-punk numbers. One man you can’t help but notice is PS I Love You front man Paul Saulnier, who is the perfect physical embodiment of his band’s sound – huge and fuzzy. The Pavilion Theatre was the place to be for husband and wife Trevor Moss and Hannah Lou, huddled around one microphone to play their earthy folk numbers to polite applause before Josh T Pearson brought some genuine star quality to proceedings with just his booming voice and one guitar – intense and immense. To Horatios, where the bluegrass-tinged sounds of James Vincent McMorrow enthrall us before Conquering Animal Sounds bring the tempo down with their delicate electronic sounds and dreamy vocals. The Castells take to the stage at Above Audio and provide the one moment of the weekend where it felt like you’d stumbled across The Next Big Thing. EMA has bundles of stage presence and personality. Her sound is raw and intense, it’s ultimately uncomplicated and anyone with a guitar could replicate it. Pulling it off with such style and panache, however, is a damn site harder. She ends the set in the crowd before retreating backstage, hot, knackered and a tad tipsy. After three days of Great Escaping, those here know exactly how she felt.

Mó:Mo Dumpling Bar

THE VERDICT
THE PLACE
Say dumplings and people of a certain age shudder, recalling evenings sat at their mother’s dining table forcing down stodgy balls of dough found, inexplicably, in stew. What the hell was that all about? Luckily the British style of dumplings fell out of favour and now we’re much more likely to be shovelling down the dish with chopsticks than forks. But oriental dumplings are a very different kettle of fish, so to speak. Mó:Mo is actually the first dumpling bar in the UK. It’s quite a big risk narrowing yourself down to what many people have only experienced as a starter or side dish but word reached us both of the owner’s passion for what he was serving up and also how damn good it was.
SOURCE’ S BESt fRy-Up!
7B Ship Street Gardens, Brighton, BN1 1AJ, 01273 205477 Mon-Fri 9-3 Sat & Sun 9-3:30
You want dumplings? You’re in luck. You want something else? Hard luck. Mó:Mo offers up five different fillings and a mix’n’match option of chicken gyoza, pork and Chinese leaf, beef and celery, which we opt for. There are loads of ways of cooking dumplings and Mó:Mo go for one of the most popular and healthy, steaming. It gives them a lovely soft texture, not a million miles from ravioli and brings the portion of six of these little fellas in at under 300 calories, if you order them with the salad (£4.70 for the mixed portion, £4.20-£4.40 otherwise). Closer to a wonton wrapper, but thicker, we struggle slightly to tell these neat pastry parcels apart. But they all taste good and the DanDan udon noodles (£1 extra) have a lovely kick and are thick and filling.
Not bad at all. There might not be a massive range of dishes on offer but the idea of specialising with one dish is one more people should consider. The service was swift, which is important as many of Mó:Mo’s customers are grabbing a quick lunch before heading back to work.
WERE WE SUSSED?
It’s kinda cosy in the place itself – it used to be a sandwich shop after all – so we thought that we’d get take-out and discuss the meal privately. On the downside the photos were rubbish (the food is artfully arranged if you eat in) but we can be certain that we weren’t sussed.

IN CONVERSATION WITH
FALLOW DENIM WORDS BY NICK COQUET
We’ve all been wearing them all our lives and yet many of us seldom give them a second thought. But jeans have come a long way since teenagers first embraced them in the 50s, and Brighton company Fallow Denim are making great strides in theirs. We spoke to Bronagh Keegan about them. Japanese denim seems to be where it’s at these days. Americans had a good run for a while but the Japanese method is the best now, yes. The mill we use in Japan for our denim has a unique dyeing process; it embeds itself into the fibres better. It’s a process they use for dyeing kimonos. There’s a whole world of denim geek-ism, if you want to open that door… Yeah, open away – let’s geek out. Well, there’s a standard way of wearing Japanese raw selvedge, which is what we use (selvedge being the non-overlap sewing method). You should wear your jeans for at least six months without washing them – we’d really recommend a year. If you start to wash them early on it doesn’t give the jeans a chance to make the natural crease marks that are unique to the way you sit down, you’re washing out the dye. Jeans you buy in the shop have regimented whispering and fake paint splashes, but if you wait before you wash raw selvedge the accents come out stronger. The Japanese apparently bought a lot of old American looms. They’re old shuttle looms and they weave the denim in short lengths. So it’s much more expensive but much better quality, it’s not made on a massive industrial loom. It’s almost like the silk of the denim world, not like little worms making it but just as highly sought after. You import the denim and manufacture the jeans in the UK. It’s a really important part of our life really, we like being able to be part of the process. We like to think we’re doing our bit for the planet too; we don’t wash it, there’s no laundry involved. We’re very aware of the cost to the planet denim has – if you buy a pair of washed and bleached jeans they’ve gone through a lot of processing, water and chemicals – we just don’t buy into that. You wash them yourself. But being British and having them made here is important, yes. It must be a challenge getting a new brand into shops. Well we tend not to go for high street stores; in Brighton our stockist is
Page 50
Peggs & Son. Our stockists have a reputation for quality, bringing on forward-thinking brands to push British fashion. Goodhood in Shoreditch was where we launched – they’re much edgier and more artistic with what they put in their shop but the response has been really good. Jeans have always been utility wear but there’s a high-end fashion side too. We don’t really concern ourselves with that – our jeans are work wear. I’ve literally just sold a pair to a builder. They may be expensive but there’s a reason for that, they’re handmade, well made and made to last. This is the challenge – if you get a hole in the pocket I’ll mend it myself. Shops like Primark doing jeans for nine quid must be a challenge too. It’s not even on our radar; they’re not our customers. They’re not really going to be able to do it anymore anyway, with the price of cotton and industry in the Indian market where a lot of them are made. They’re already looking at their wages and wondering why they’re not being paid more. We pay fairly for everything, we know exactly where it’s all coming from and our jeans are literally touched by two pairs of hands before you get them. So at around £150 a pair, where do you sit in the jeans market? We’re definitely in the premium denim bracket, but there are brands out there like PRPS, which go for £200-300, or Balmains for a grand. The styling is amazing though, and an awful lot of work goes into them, but it’s more a fashion thing. We’re very conscious of our market, we’re not saying these are like a pair of vintage Levi’s but we’re not reinventing the wheel either. I think we’re quite fairly priced and I think that’s why we’re becoming a brand that people want. We want people to like them for what they are, not for whose bum they’ve seen them on.

SIX OF THE BEST
ICONIC POP LOOKS WORDS BY MATT BARKER, NICK COQUET, JAMES KENDALL
Those with a reservation at pop’s top table rarely arrive on musical merits alone. The video age may be dwindling alongside the music industry’s wider fortunes, but a true star still has to have that visual wow factor to shine brighter than the last. Here’s a predictably contentious list of six who, in the words of Prince, got the look.
DAVID BOWIE
Glam rock was a cruel fashion leveller – the likes of Sweet and Slade just looked like brickies with blusher – but Bowie’s calculated manipulation of its look was his making as a true superstar. For an artist whose style changed with the tides it’s tricky to pin down a definitive period, but the ‘Aladdin Sane’ era ranks among the most legendary looks in pop history, from the lightning bolt across his face to the first public sighting of the mullet. We should warn you from bitter experience though; shaving your eyebrows off in affectionate tribute is not a good idea. (NC)
LADY GAGA
Even Bowie with a good decade under his belt at the forefront of cutting edge fashion hasn’t got as many dramatic looks as Lady Gaga. Similarly for Gaga, fashion is about theatrics – she’s the one person who looks at the catwalk and wonders how to, you know, amp things up a bit. At her best when she’s more McQueen than Madonna, the skirt-eschewing pop star makes skimpy look playful rather than slutty. Her best look? Possibly the delicate lace of her 2010 Brits performance. Her most memorable? The meat dress. So far. (JK)
Run DMC
You know what the most iconic kind of trainers of all time are? Adidas Superstars – those shell-toe, three-striped works of peerless genius. You know why? Because the most iconic hip hop group of all time, Run DMC, did a song about them. Run DMC own that black Kangol hat, dookie rope chain and Adidas shell-toes look that everyone on the planet would draw if given the ‘rapper’ clue in Pictionary. (MB)

THE WHITE STRIPES
Jack and Meg made life sartorially simple for themselves when planning the White Stripes’ wardrobe. Basically, if it wasn’t red, white or very occasionally black, it wasn’t worth wearing. It’s a slightly cartoonish concept for a band whose two-piece blues rock had such authentic chops, but as with all those featured in this list it gave them an instantly identifiable and unique look. Jack might have made a rod for his own back though – he looks a bit odd now, post-Stripes, in a beige jacket. (NC)
ADAM ANT
In what was possibly pop’s most colourful era, Adam Ant still managed to broaden its spectrum by several hues during the burgeoning video era of the early 80s. With a look few could realistically imitate, Adam took fashion advice from Malcolm McLaren (who subsequently stole his Ants to form Bow Wow Wow) and combined Native American, pirate and highwayman to form a swashbuckling, widescreen couture composite. Of its time? You might think so, but Adam’s still rocking the look right now at the sprightly age of 56, and looking damn good on it. (NC)
MADONNA
Never mind the eye-endangering pointy bra and the S&M gear of her mega success years, Madonna’s Desperately Seeking Susan-era look inspired a generation of teens all over the bubblegum-chewing world to ape her style. It was a thrift store trolley dash that anyone could afford, mixing chains, crucifixes, string vests, bangles and leggings to become the de facto uniform for both the Madge devotee and then just young girls in general. It reached such a fever pitch that Macy’s in New York actually opened a department called Madonnaland, churning out Ciccone clones 10 to the dozen. (NC)
