HAVIN’ IT TAJ

As if any confirmation was needed that food is important to Brightonians then the occupation of the old Taj has really rammed it down our throats. The exotic supermarket was well loved ever since it opened an extra branch down at the bottom of St James Street, and Kemptown was gutted when it shut down suddenly. When news hit that Sainsbury’s was going to open another branch there the community leapt into action, got into the building and started squatting it. Calling themselves SaboTaj – surely the best branding this side of a multinational – they’ve held onto the spot for almost two weeks as we write this, despite police visits and court cases, and look like staying there, 24/7, for a long while yet. The latest we heard is that their desire to have the space used for the community has led them to create an art maze of local artists in the basement which they’ve called the Squnderground (that’s not as good as SaboTaj but, hey, you can’t strike gold every time). There seems to be plenty of support despite the fact that Morrison’s up the road is the city’s worst supermarket. The Lewes Road Community Garden protest worked, maybe this one will too.

Brighton’s best horror movie fest is back at The Caroline Of Brunswick, guaranteed to give you nightmares at best and an evacuated stomach at worst. There’s a triple tribute to an Italian gore maestro, a documentary on video nasties followed by two seldom seen examples; a Far East, far-out strand of Asian badness, the greatest porno-comedy-horror ever committed to celluloid and much, much more. Pop in to the pub to pick up a free vintage Scala-style programme for full details. Oh, and it’s all totally free.

The Martlets Hospice is holding a High Tea at the Vintage Me event on Saturday 5th from 10am to 5.30pm at the Unitarian Church, just along from the Theatre Royal. For your three quid entry you’ll get to ogle models parading in vintage gear from the 1940s-60s, as well as perusing the rails for your own same-era outfits and shoes pulled from the Martlets shop on Church Street.

It’s not just about the clothes though, there’s jewellery and books, plus you get tea and cake. Get involved and make a difference.

Since the demise of naughty old Beachdown, Meadowlands is the closest you’re going to get to a local festival, and it’s certainly worth the short shlep to Glynde. May 27th-29th are the dates for your diary, when you can see over 40 bands including our own Doll & The Kicks, Jo Harman and Mirrors, plus this year’s introduction of a comedy and spoken word tent. Free camping, DJs, vendors, street traders, bars, light shows and interactive entertainers should all make for a good start to the summer and the festival season. KOMEDIA LAUGH IT OFF

Even the very dim should be able to work out the field of excellence celebrated by the Chortle Awards, and we’re pleased to announce that two of Brighton’s finest have had their backs slapped in this year’s list. Komedia is the deserving winner of Best Comedy Venue In The South (the ninth time they’ve walked away with it) and Stephen Grant, host of its Krater Club, now has a Best Compere gong on his mantlepiece. Nice one, funny fella!

Back for its sixth year, Brighton Fashion Week returns on May 31st for its strongest line-up yet. As well as the three catwalk attractions of the Couture, Brighton Frocks and RTW Shows, new this year is the Love Fashion, Hate Sweatshops charity gig with a load of major bands playing in association with War On Want. The Fashion Emporium returns with purchase opportunities for the gear on show, as does the Trashion Show, with an apparently controversial new couture collection. Remember when you gamely said you’d run the 2011 Brighton Marathon? Remember being one of the 15,000 entrants who registered in the first 30 days? Remember endlessly putting off starting your training? Does that sound familiar, you shambling, wheezing mess? The 26-mile race is fast approaching now, hitting town on April 10th, and the latest news is it’ll be started by gold medallist Steve Cram. And if you’re buzzing off finishing the race, or just from cheering a loved one in, you’ll want to celebrate at the after party with Alice Russell at the Brighton Centre.

When he’s not snapping spruced-up Brightonians for our Street Style feature, Kevin Meredith is a renowned ambassador of SLR avoidance via the medium of the toy camera. The lack of professional settings often produce quirky and unexpected results, all collected in Kev’s new book ‘Toy Cameras – Creative Photos’. The annual Record Store Day is rolling around again next month, with 150 indie stores taking part on a day of exclusive releases and PAs. Brighton is well represented by Rounder and Resident, both bezzy mates with SOURCE, so the fact that they’re both chasing the award for best record shop makes it tricky. We obviously can’t decide between them, but you can vote for your favourite at indierecordshop.org.

The weekly clubnight that’s had us jumping and jiving to the sounds of 40s and 50s calypso, ska and rocksteady for two years now are bringing their crates of Caribbean sounds to The Haunt.

Live acts and guest DJs will also become part of the soul party, with Jerry Dammers, Jazzman Gerald and Andy Smith all making an appearance behind the decks at the launch party on Thursday 10th.

Recently reopened after a nice winter break, this worldwide franchise on the south side of The Level offers cheap nosh from fast food (hot dogs, burgers, nuggets, etc) to Asian meals (satay, kung po, sweet and sour). It’s all freshly made by friendly staff and because it’s a totally vegan menu, none of your furry friends get the chop.

Guilty Pleasures is Concorde-bound, having their launch party on Saturday 12th, marking the release of the mega-hip brand’s new compilation album. The theme is Top Of The Pops, so get down there dressed as Jimmy Saville and dance like a loon. They’ve got SingStar in the front bar, or dance along to DJs Dynamite Sal and Hot Gusset, plus dance troupe Sparkle Motion.

It was an utter genius who first decided to try out a table tennis table in a club (we heard it was Susan Sarandon, and we’re not about to contradict that amazing piece of hearsay). On Friday 4th at Life, Pong will feature disco, booze, table tennis (free play and a tournament), with cash prizes for boy and girl champions, and someone mysterious called Susan.

DIRTY CASH

Tuedays at Coalition are now the domain of Dirty Cash, spinning old school garage to new hip hop. A team of resident DJs join together with new British live acts to bring the party, with the whole thing turning its back on blingy glitz and glamour and giving a complicated street-handshake to simple, honest-to-goodness massive party tunes.

Famed in song for bringing all the boys to the yard, this new night promises to redirect them, along with the city’s womenfolk, to the Haunt every Wednesday. It’s a celebration of proper pop music from Fleetwood Mac to Foals, Kate Bush to Kim Wilde, putting the heart back into chart, with the solemn promise of “No crap, no idiots, no JLS (which surely are one and the same thing?). And who’s going to argue with that, eh?

A new night at the Brunswick on Saturday 19th aims to put some of the ‘far-out’ back into gigs. First up, it’s the return of legendary purveyors of weirdness, Tim’s Wild Orchid Slide Show; space-rock jazz-improv from The Sumerian Kings and headliners Whimwise, a psychedelic orchestra that transcends genres to make one groovy masterpiece.

Serving up cuisine inspired by regional Indian dishes, street food and thalis, the Chilli Pickle is moving to bigger premises at Myhotel on Jubilee Square. Their award-winning oxtail madras, tandoori sea bass and rose kulfi will still be part of the mouthwatering menu, served up overlooking the square in a colourful, kitsch and relaxed dining area to chow down in.

Brighton is full of unique things, and its architecture is no exception. FotoLibra aims to record these historical landmarks to create a unique photographic archive of our town. They’re keen on preserving everyday heritage too – streetscapes and public areas – not just the fancy bits like the Pavilion. Contribute pics at their website and earn a fee on publication. Old photos count too, so dig out those family albums.

Oxford’s form in the history of music has waxed and waned over the years, but following the commercial and critical success of bands like Foals and Stornoway a new collective has formed that’s been helping to produce a lengthy line of new bands in recent years. Appearing under this unifying movement, called Blessing Force, the likes of Pet Moon, Chad Valley and Fixers have had the A&R racing up the M40, but it’s Trophy Wife that are widely considered to hold the finest potential of them all. Vessels have been around for a fair while now, and it’s fair to say they’re going to hit a high point with their 2011 album. Combining the more interesting aspects of twiddly shoegaze with the more hypnotic elements of post-rock, Vessels outstrip their British contemporaries by consistently improving. The new album was recorded entirely in America and the emotive, low-key thrash of their latest songs clearly takes inspiration from their counterparts on the other side of the pond. This is sure to be a night of enthusiastic chin stroking and foot tapping. (JMM)

How will the world remember Mike Skinner? As a pop visionary cranking out cult classics from his bedroom? As the monged-out mastermind behind the Red Bull Asbo of ‘Fit But You Know It’?

Or the laboured soul whose most recent work has suggested The Streets are paved with sonic mould rather than the proverbial glittering chart stuff? With final album ‘Computers & Blues’ hitting shelves as we speak, one thing’s clear. He deserves to be remembered and there are few who can say that. (BG)

DETROIT SOCIAL CLUB Jam Fri 4th

Lauded by pretty much everyone, northern soulsters Detroit Social Club are inspired by 70s gospel, big beat, folk and

(although they might not admit it) 90s northern pop. Lead songwriter David Burn credits himself as not just a musician but also a ‘vibe creator,’ so if you can get through the doors past his head, this show should be impressive. Having recently parted company with a major record label, this tour heralds a return to the band’s lackadaisical, stripped-back roots. (JMM)

KT TUNSTALL

Dome Sat 5th

KT Tunstall is one of those singers you wouldn’t mind going for a drink with on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Bringing folk back to life, she takes a mix of styles and does what she likes with them. Her recent album, ‘Tiger Suit’, added a more modern techno edge, and she seems arguably more comfortable in her skin. Her voice still retains its edgy, vulnerable beauty, but with a higher range it all takes on a more epic feel. (SJ)

Brighton Centre Weds 9th

Mystery surrounds the spectacular transformation of Ben Drew who was, not so long ago, no more than a laboured UK answer to Eminem. His chart-topping reconfiguration as a Motown-fired soul boy has left some speculating he’s the brainchild of Amy Winehouse, who is so used to chilling in the Caribbean she’d happily swap her entire chart career for some crack. With a Brit Award under his belt, SOURCE can only conclude that the real defamation of Strickland Banks was actually his plan A. (BG)

PATRICK DUFF Latest MusicBar Weds 9th

Rising from the Blue Aeroplanes’ wing of the Bristol scene, Strangelove were always a bit too intense for the Britpop melee in which they found themselves. Patrick Duff’s propensity for tearing his hair out on stage and substituting guitar solos for extended bouts of screaming drew appreciation from the likes of Manic Street Preachers, Radiohead and collaborators Suede.

Since Strangelove disbanded, Duff has continued recording with moonlighting Portishead and Massive Attack members, with his third solo album in the offing. (SH)

THE NAKED AND FAMOUS & YAAKS Digital Weds 9th

Digital plays host to two bands set to take the summer by storm this year. New Zealand quintet The Naked And Famous, with clear stylistic influences from Passion Pit, released their debut album last year and are set to bring a big, new, hypnotising electro pop presence to UK dancefloors. With support from the very Foalsian Yaaks, on their first tour since a slot on BBC Introducing, this should be a great night for new music. (JC)

Corn Exchange Sat 12th

Don’t let the baggy t-shirts and waggy hand movements confuse you – Shlomo’s not your average beatboxer. He’s played with Björk to open the Olympics, collaborated with acts as diverse as Martha Wainwright to Foreign Beggars and worked with the BBC to promote beatboxing to young people, and now he’s embarked on a concert tour. Described as “jaw-droppingly amazing” by the Guardian and “the Harry Potter of beatboxing” by Tim Westwood, he’ll be showcasing his own soundscapes and some familiar covers, reworked in his unique way. Brighton Centre Tues 15th - Thurs 17th The post-X Factor landscape is a peculiarly arduous place. In all the excitement of ITV’s world monstering singing competition, it’s often forgotten that the lucky winner must often accept a lifetime of ridicule at best. Mary Byrne’s mega shouting or Aiden Grimshaw’s freshly sharpened jaw can never compensate for Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole’s missing star quality on the national live tour – only a massive screen projection of Wagner holding a lion’s tail in his swimming trunks beamed onto Brighton Pier could ever do that. Tutored at the Liverpool Institute of the Performing Arts, multiskilled and with a voice that could smash glass, Hannah Peel surely had Paul McCartney’s thumbs working overtime. She’s

gone on to tour with The Unthanks but debut album ‘The Broken Wave’ is no exercise in frigid folk revisionism, whether she’s backed by production from Tunng’s Mike Lindsay or Nitin Sawhney or armed with a music box and a pop classic. Her little tsunami is about to hit. Prepare to be gently soaked. (BG)

THOMAS TRUAX Green Door Store Fri 18th

Thomas Truax furthers the ultra cutting-edgeness of the Green Door Store venue tonight. This man’s act is a beautiful thing to behold, with a take on life that cannot be matched or found elsewhere, and music that reflects these values. It’s akin to a summer’s evening around a campfire with a mystic shaman – you will be shown strange objects you’ve never dreamed existed, used and characterised to produce sounds you didn’t think could be music, and you’ll be swept along by the simple childlike joy of it all. PRIMAL SCREAM Brighton Centre Tues 22nd

How do you follow one of music’s most seismic, mind-altering, era-defying records? Not by playing ‘Country Girl’, that’s for sure.

Primal Scream’s recent debut ‘Screamadelica’ shows were notable for many reasons, but Bobby Gillespie and co’s decision to open with a greatest hits set before unveiling their masterpiece in all its unfolding, elevating glory was a KO move, arming the group with the power with which to launch their ecstatic soul rocket into the firework-stunned, technicolor sky. Don’t fight it, feel it. (BG)

Gloriously under-exposed and destined to draw in fans like William Burroughs was drawn to heroin, Crystal Stilts are a New York psychedelic band made with the same blasé sunshine riffs, echoing rhythms and edifying beats as Mudhoney, The Jesus & Mary Chain and Pavement. Sporting dark clothes, sunglasses, fashionable facial hair and carrying the weight of a thousand beatniks, Crystal Stilts are everything you could possibly desire from a New York garage punk band. Concorde 2 Mon 28th

This is going to be a completely mind-blowing evening – we cannot stress this enough. Random Hand bring it in the way only four Yorkshire boys truly can: hard, fast, and insanely loud. The King Blues meanwhile create microcosmic universes with their evocative lyrics and beautifully arranged indie pop rap. Sandwiched between them are Sonic Boom Six, the Manchester punk rock outfit who combine frenetic lyrics, wailing guitar and the occasional harmony to ear-pounding effect. Three incredibly unique acts redefining their genres, all in one night. (NH)

Concorde 2 Tues 29th

As Pete Doherty’s cleaner-looking other half in the Libertines, the star of Dirty Pretty Things, and now a model, actor and author to boot, Carl Barât is almost disgustingly talented. Just as well that his eponymous first album, released last October, is actually pretty good. Despite featuring an intensely cringe-worthy self-portrait on the cover (think German porn star) this album demonstrates his clever, witty lyrics, tight production and effortlessly catchy pop songs. Indie for the uninitiated as well as the devoted fans. (JMM)

JOSH T PEARSON Ballroom Tues 29th

The resurrection of Christ is not regularly covered in the pantheon of modern rock. Unless you happen to be US trio Lift To Experience, who beamed down to Earth ten years ago with apocalyptic concept album ‘The Texas Jerusalem Crossroads’ tucked under their arm. Sadly, it has proved near impossible for bandleader Josh T Pearson to follow. Did all the angels and Bible prophecies leave him spent for a decade?

Tonight’s show really could be your one chance to witness the true Second Coming. (BG)

As the sun shines on our seafront in what looks like an eerily early first day of spring, The Go! Team feel like its perfect soundtrack. Their third album, ‘Rolling Blackouts’, is certainly a factor-30 funfest, but don’t be tempted to think of them as Brightonian in anything but postcode.

“People always latch onto it, they always write about us as a ‘Brighton sextet’”, says Team leader Ian Parton. “I knew they would, it’s that kind of seaside thing, but the reality is it doesn’t even sound British. I like the idea that it’s placeless; we can’t really claim to be an Anglophile band, there are so many

international influences.”

Indeed, the album continues their safari through disparate musical dynasties, from Japan’s J-pop through Italian soundtracks, spaghetti westerns, New York no wave and, dare we say, the altogether more misty-eyed suggestion of sitting in front of the telly as a kid. Ninja, the band’s singer/chanter/rapper, has also considered this. ”It’s not a conscious thing, it just happens to be Ian’s musical influences. There’s a kind of carefree nature to the songs. I think there’s a lot of miserable indie around, people all swallowed up in

‘Rolling Blackouts’, rather than prescribing to any notion of ‘difficult third album’, is more a bigger and bolder statement of what The Go! Team sound has always aspired to.

“It’s different in quite a few ways,” agrees Ian. “The production’s more ambitious without being wanky.”

It’s certainly a broader palate they’re playing with this time around – a live brass section, steel drums, autoharps, plus extensive and eclectic eBay acquisitions filling out the sound.

“People perceive us as a sample band but we’ve always had real instruments,“ says Ian. “It’s a bit like directing – you’re trying to visualise how the songs should come out. I like to imagine I’m discovering them on an old VHS tape. ‘Yosemite Theme’ could be from some old promo video for visiting the park or something.”

But directing the musical course of the good ship Go! Team isn’t always straightforward, as Ian admits: “We tried a Brazilian choir on one track and it was just obvious it didn’t work. We don’t make things easy for ourselves…” ”It’s definitely a contrast from the last record,” offers Ninja. “It’s not slick, we don’t want to sound or look slick. It’s mainstream but rough around the edges.”

The band’s lo-fi sound manifesto is certainly put to the test on some of the most commercial songs they’ve ever presented. ‘Ready To Go Steady’ and ‘Buy Nothing Day’ shimmer with pop optimism – we wonder if there’s a deliberate steer away from a commercial sheen that would be all too easy to apply.

Ian reckons it’s definitely a balancing act: “The sound is less ‘bedroom’ than before – you can’t keep making the same record forever. I’ve always had an obsession with curvy, slinky melody and catchiness, but in a nonobvious way. My interpretation of pop is more Phil Spector and the Shangri Las than Lady Ga Ga, but I still love lo-fi and distortion. I even mastered the LP onto cassette – it’s suicide in a way but I love the sound of saturation and tape hiss. I’m always paranoid about it sounding too hi-fi.”

But despite this honourably obstinate act of sonic self-sabotage, the Team find themselves in heavy demand for music syncs that many more polished outfits have launched entire careers on the back of.

“We’ve had music in games and films – that’s cool, it’s quite nice. There’s no real money in it though, they just kind of consider it an advert for your songs. But I’m a bit funny about actual adverts, I’ve turned down things that could have potentially made lots of money.”

There’s a hint of a frown in Ian’s voice.

In Ya Ear Promotions have just unleashed a new Thursday night win by kicking off 2011 with Flava In Ya Ear. A sought after night among the Brighton clubbing crowd, it’s been upped to a weekly event due to high demand. Located at The Haunt, it offers tasty hip hop bangers and r’n’b beats – basically doing what it says on the tin and intoxicating your ears with classic tunes that will have you on the floor all night long. If you do stop to grab a drink, the guys behind it claim to offer the cheapest drinks in town. (SD)

Life Fri 4th

The proliferation of the idea of 140bpm as a genre and not just a tempo is exemplified by label Hessle Audio. Early exponents of dude du jour James Blake, Hessle have been pushing many other key figures in the whatever-step scene, in particular tonight’s line-up of Pearson Sound (aka Ramadanman), Pangaea and label boss Ben UFO. Another month of futurebass from the scene’s frontline venue, Life. (MB)

FORMER GHOSTS Green Door Store Fri 4th

Synth-laden Former Ghosts are the brainchild of Xiu Xiu’s Jamie Stewart, and seemingly an outlet for his gloomier thoughts.

Unprepared to raise his voice above an uncompromising dirge of depressing lyrics and death rattles, it falls to the tight experimental backing of electronica, drum sequences, synths, whines and beeps to lift Former Ghosts’ sound into something both charming and unpredictable. Embracing a full spectrum of styles banded by Stewart’s deadpan delivery, these musicians are truly talented. (JMM)

It’s maybe strange to think there’s a truly international, leading club night in Brighton, and that it’s in such an intimate venue as the underrated Jam. Donky Pitch is Britain’s premiere stop-off for skweee stars and to prove it tonight has an insanely strong line-up from the worldwide scene. Melkeveien, Sprutbass and Beatbully from Oslo’s Dod Pop label fly in, with a live set from local hero Boss Kite, and Thunderloops from Serbian-based Svetlana Industries.

You want more? Residents Slugabed (from Planet Mu) and The Grinel & Nameless will cram in some bass-heavy tunes too. It’s a night clubbers in other countries will be jealous of. (JK)

Dubstep innovator, teen street punk, hardcore metal vocalist, and all round genre-bender Skrillex is hitting our humble coast as part of his debut European tour, and this show will be a revelation. His psychotic glitchy dubstep and addictive dancefloor fillers for DeadMou5’s label Mau5trap are shaking the scene by its jugular.

Prepare your senses for an audio-visual assault of bright lights, fast beats and smooth dance moves as in support are Ninja Tune founders, hip hop-sampling, electronic breaks pioneers Coldcut who provide a live visual set alongside SOURCE scratch favourite JFB. (JMM/ZC)

FuntCase produces sensory overload dubstep that wobbles, womps and machine guns through your body, making you dance whether you want to or not. With tunes like ‘Ho!’, ‘Mattress Punch’ and ‘So Vexed’ all full of fire, fury and funk, its unsurprising that this guy’s getting major airplay from the likes of Mista Jam. And with bookings like this, Supercharged maintain their reputation for bringing Brighton the freshest acts dance music has to offer. (ZC)

HERCULES & LOVE AFFAIR Digital Thurs 10th

THE QEMISTS •

Honestly, we looked slightly askance at H&LA when they extricated themselves from their hometown label – New York alt.disco gods DFA – and signed with UK indie coolsters Moshi Moshi, but when new album ‘Blue Songs’ arrived, all was more than forgiven. It teams a pinch of early 80s underground disco with a big bowl of 90s piano house, and live they’ll be serving it up in a gender-jamming orgy of moody cool and abandon. Time to pick a safe word you won’t want to use. (MB)

Local legends The Qemists fuse their rock roots with drum’n’bass inclinations to present a live experience that’s full on and downright dirty. They’re joined by The Engine Earz Experiment, a dubstep band with tunes so deep and soulful their live show is beautifully immersive with irresistible vibes and has been earning them support from Radio 1’s Nihal. If you’re wondering whether to attend this evening just check out their videos from Madavail – it’ll seal the deal. (ZC)

Coming just a year after the Wu-Tang’s ‘36 Chambers’ classic, Clan member Raekwon’s ‘Only Built 4 Cuban Linx’ is not just one of the collective’s best LPs, but one of New York hip hop’s finest hours. A true cinematic experience with great storytelling, characters and evocative imagery, it might not have sold like Method Man’s ‘Tical’ but it gave Raekwon every bit as much respect in the underground.

What we’re saying here is that the man is a genuine hip hop legend and we don’t get many of those in Brighton each year. Go see. (JK)

If you still need to dance off your post-Christmas paunch then Digital’s got the right night for you. Obese beats and fat breaks make up the Plump DJs’ diet and they’ve been helping clubbers shed calories for over a decade now. Since moving from Finger Lickin’ Records in 2009 they’re currently releasing their delectable tunes on the Global Underground label and remixing for the likes of Stanton Warriors, Dave Spoon and DeadMau5, so get on down to Digital to shake off your pounds. Trust us, the Atkins ain’t got shit on this. (ZC)

Nero have been around for years, and even if you haven’t heard of them, you’ll definitely have heard them. Their big bass remixes of The Streets, La Roux and others have seen them sit firmly on the Radio 1 playlist, and with the vocal charms of Alana Grey, their own sounds are getting an increasing amount of airplay too. Currently being championed with a BBC Sound of 2011 recommendation, Nero’s accessible and solid blend of dubstep, drum’n’bass and heady vocals is well worth the £6 entry fee. (JMM)

Back when Grandmother Flash gave birth to hip hop, she couldn’t have imagined her offspring turning out like this.

Glitchy, pared-down, electro-laden beeps and beats exude from Lando Kal, aka half of Lazer Sword, but it’s unmistakably hip hop that gives the swagger in these genes. Experimental as a half-remembered, half-feared dream, and tinged with 2 step, this night unveils the strange nephew of hip hop. (JMM)

As if Playgroup weren’t busy enough with their festival and all the events that they put on for themselves, they’re now helping out those who are really up against it. Half the proceeds of this 1929-themed night will be given to international anti-poverty charity War On Want.

The line-up is worth a fiver for an early bird ticket anyway – it’s a tenner on the door – with DMC champion DJ Switch (not MIA’s mate) turning his hand to swing. He’s joined by Dutty Moonshine and Bill Murray. No, not the movie star, the electro-jive band. (JK)

Drum’n’bass is still there, people. You thought dubstep had killed it?

You’re forgetting it’s the cockroach of musical genres – d’n’b would still be there after a nuclear holocaust (see the Burning Man festival for a preview of that scenario). Critical Sound are a label pushing the deeper, more considered seam – no eye-rolling jump-up here. dBridge heads the line-up and will no doubt be bashing out his ‘autonomic’ sub-genre – a deep, syncopated take on d’n’b – alongside Lenzman and label head honcho Kasra. Fulfilling the Da Doos’ criteria of strictly fem-centric tunes tonight is guest DJ Tim Burgess out of The Charlatans. He’s a proper DJ as well as an avid record collector and appears alongside regulars Chris King and Jon Slade as well as Declan Allen from ATP, spinning a set of sisterly soul, funk and pop from the 50s to mid-70s. Tim Burgess stalkers might also like to know he’s also playing an acoustic Charlatans set at Komedia on Thursday 17th. (NC)

After a few homes the night that’s also known as TNGS or ∆ has found a great venue in the Williamsburg warehouse chic of the Green Door Store which ought to mean that the bands who frequently guest get a decent stage. If you go often enough you might even get an invite to their secret parties in working men’s clubs and crumbling Victorian mansions.

Brighton has more than its fair share of big name bookings but you might be surprised at the number of heavyweight DJs and labels with headquarters right on your doorstep.

Local legend DJ Friction is one of these big names and his label Shogun Audio is nothing less than a superstar on the UK drum’n’bass scene.

Tonight Audio hosts Shogun’s showcase of their freshest talent. The Prototypes step up by blending European techno synths and infectious vocal loops over rapidfire beats to produce addictive d’n’b rollers, while SpectraSoul hark back to the mid 90s and shun the latest flex for lazy liquid funk. SpectraSoul’s production is calculated and considered with yearning basslines and minimal backbeats that wear away the dancefloor with their steady soulful grind.

By the end of the night Audio is covered with empty cups and broken glass shimmering with sweat, exactly what you’d expect after an evening of Shogun’s top talent.

ART: LABORATORY LIFE DANCE: LES BALLETS TROCKADERO DE MONTE CARLO Lighthouse Tues 1st - Mon 7th

The final week of February saw more artists and scientists than you could fit in a mansion-sized test tube descend on the Lighthouse to create five new projects in an open laboratory. DNA tattooing and astrobiology are among the exotic offerings being promised when the results are unveiled to an unsuspecting public here. A talk on the 3rd and a public forum on the 5th will also discuss and debate the role of technology in medicine. (BM)

EVENT: ART JUNKY Phoenix Sat 5th - Sun 6th

Brighton’s most dazzling indoor art flea market just gets bigger. The fourth year of the Art Junky juggernaut expands to a two-day fest, with more than 50 stalls offering as many quirky canvasses, old Doc Martens, tramp wedding dresses and handmade toothbrush holders as you can stuff into a felt-crafted handbag.

Running wild through the mighty Phoenix, it also features live DJs, a cracking café and face painting, with all proceeds going to the gallery. (BM)

THEATRE: THE WELL New Venture Theatre Sat 5th – Sat 12th

In Woodingdean in 1862, where this play by Jonathan Brown is set, people didn’t have to worry about the erratic reliability of the number 22 bus or whether they’d ever get a decent pub. Instead, the focus of one man lies with digging the world’s deepest well at the behest of workhouse planners, a seemingly pointless exercise which leads to revelations about the prostitute mother found dead under the pier during his childhood. There’s more than water beneath them there hills. (BM)

What is a male ballerina called? What about a group of them? Maybe the world has yet to find words to describe Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, which makes them all the more intriguing. A 17-strong pack of tutu-clad satirists simultaneously destroying your romantic notions of ballet and making it humorous, as well as being technically highly skilled – this show fits nicely into the categories of ‘cultural,’ ‘witty’ and ‘very, very Brighton.’ (JMM)

COMEDY: PHILIP JEAYS & FRIENDS Upstairs at Three and Ten Thurs 17th

Forget about staring at your feet and fiddling with your smartphone while the support act bores you into drinking the bar dry for this one.

Having cornered the Gallic-tinged cabaret market, ace singer-songwriter Philip Jeays went on tour with brainbox entertainer to the masses Robin Ince, and Ince will be returning the favour here. Even if the Time Out award winner and Stewart Lee co-conspirator fails in his bid to make science sexy, he’s funny enough to make a deadly duo with Jeays. (BM)

DANCE: BIG BAG OF BOOM The Basement Fri 18th

If you’ve ever considered taking a cheese grater to your forehead or shoving daggers into your eyelids while watching some excruciating half-baked cod-dance cack, the New Art Club duo are here to reward your suffering and slice through the pretence. During a decade of gongscooping stupidity they’ve contemplated garden gnome sex, campaigned for opposable thumbs and indelibly imprinted images of men in leotards taking a slash onto our sorry souls. Celebrating 10 years, this revue sums up the Morecambe and Wise of dance. (BM)

ART: ACTUATE MY VOID Phoenix from Sat 19th

Light in the dark for this three-artist exhibition of installation experimentalists. Angie Atmadjaja is a York sonic sorcerer who likes to turn spaces into “white voids” and configure noise so that it works in tune with the speed at which you stumble through the gallery. From Halifax and Leeds to Norway and Belgium, Theo Burt has travelled the world infiltrating venues with shimmering chinks of light from custom-made computer systems as he goes. They’re joined by sound artist Peter Worth. (BM)

Lone Twin deal in blood-and-thunder Brechtian displays of dance, drama, music and heartbreak, which you really should witness if you’ve got any interest in the power of performance.

This hat-trick starts with Alice Bell, the fairytale rollercoaster of personal hope and despair for which they are perhaps most roundly adored. Second piece Daniel Hit By A Train is the vaudeville testimony of souls who suffered sacrificial deaths, and finale The Festival deals with the small concepts of love and the extraordinary. (BM)

A monthly series of community-focused film and music weekends. Saturday night’s riot grrrl celebration includes live music from queer punk/folk groups Trash Kit and Woolf, a screening of cult US punk movie Ladies And Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains, and the premiere of Huggy Bear flick February 14th, assembled from footage of a 1993 show at the Richmond. Sunday evening’s theme is ‘Land’, headed by historical docu-drama Winstanley, plus related shorts and folk music from Robert Stillman. (SH)

DANCE: STOMP Dome from Tues 29th

After being set up in Brighton 20 years ago, Stomp have truly set the world alight – redefining what’s essentially an elongated drum solo into unique entertainment. In 2002 their first West End show was broadcast to critical acclaim, they’ve played on Broadway over 5,000 times, and it doesn’t look like slowing down. Returning home in all their bin lid-bashing, plastic barrel-toting glory, this stellar cast will create a fresh, fastpaced and funny performance, with loads of everyday objects thrown in. And yes, there’s also the kitchen sink. (JC)

COMEDY: THE RETURN OF BOOTHBY GRAFFOE Komedia Thurs 31st

How to explain the allure of Boothby Graffoe? If your dad got hammered at a wedding and started muttering terrible jokes before grabbing a dusty guitar and rattling off an arsenal of bizarre songs, all the while necking wine and employing the mannerisms of Alan Partridge, you’d be close. The lanky northern lunatic is the definition of cult classic not bestseller, but his ability to hit the comedy g-spot is flawless. The long overdue return of a hero. (BM)

With China’s increasing world dominance in the world of commerce – recently overtaking Japan to become the planet’s second most powerful economy – it’s only right that we celebrate their more artistic endeavours as well. Their rich heritage of dynasties, together with a thriving contemporary creative community, have led to Christie’s and Sotherby’s proclaiming China as the new darling of the art world – this pair of exhibitions looks certain to help cement that reputation.

The relationship between European audiences and Eastern art is at the forefront of these collections, concentrating on the photographic medium. Fine art photographers all living and working in China, including Jingyi Yang, Seppe Van Grieken, Boris Austin and Peikwen Cheng present a varied mix of people and landscapes, providing a rare insight into the human and pastoral side of a hitherto secular and secretive society.

ALBUM: BEARDYMAN • I Done A Album (Sunday Best)

Making an album was always going to be tricky for Beardyman – his whole being is performance. But on an LP nobody cares how the noises are made, just how good the songs are. So it’s with surprise, but relief, that very few sounds here come from his mouth. With production help from Tom Middleton, ‘I Done A Album’ covers mid 90s Aphex Twin, crunchy dubstep, Baltic oddness and afrobeat in as many tracks. There are still gags in here, but Beardy has turned to the music. (JK)

SINGLE: CLIFFHANGA • Landmines (Suicide Dub)

High Rankin protégé Cliffhanga spent his childhood pulling electronic toys apart to expand their aural capabilities, before an adolescence dabbling with drum machines, finally graduating to true bedroom producer status. This single, following wellreceived inclusions on Rankin’s ‘This Is Suicide Dub’ compilations, is his first proper release, a vocal-led floorfiller featuring the voice of his sister. The sweet innocence of her multi-layered, near madrigal voice is threatened by a slow, dirty dubstep backing that almost makes you worry for her safety. Remixes from Arkist and Evolve Or Die add some variety to suit all floors. (NC)

ALBUM: FIDGITAL • Let’s Get Fidgital (Eastpak)

The reinterpretation of pop classics using anything remotely approaching ‘zany’ or ‘wacky’ instrumentation is always a minefield, and Fidgital (from the Battlejam family) stride confidently into this incendiary arena. Classical violin and scratch turntablism form an unlikely alliance as they invade territories including Massive Attack and the Stone Roses, in a strategy many might surmise as almost blasphemous. But actually in the most part it’s successful – none of it plays up to novelty and they manage to make the disparate styles gel perfectly via some nice toasted MC rhymes. Definitely worth dipping into. (NC)

The first full-blown album from the Brothers – and if ‘full-blown’ makes you think of incurable diseases, you might be on the same

Dark menace delivered by a stripped-back punkabilly blues review, Screaming Tupelo share more than half their name with the troubled, confessional narrative of early Nick Cave singles. From the Mississippi Delta to the blue moon of Kentucky, the trio of songs here take pointed references from the very birth of rock’n’roll and drag them into the current century, with the corpses of its founding fathers rattling in their wake. There’s also a latter-day 80s Matchbox personnel crossover here, which makes perfect sense. This is well worth investigating. (NC)

dark wavelength as a song like ‘Happy Days’. Its observation “I see a cute kitten burning/It makes me happy for the rest of the day” neatly sets the stall out for the rest of the repertoire. Punk comedy cabaret sums them up quite neatly, with songs about kebabs, old age and Arnold Schwarzenegger – all delivered by a strangely costumed combo including ball gowns and that 80s style evergreen, the IRA balaclava. ALBUM: MR B THE GENTLEMAN RHYMER • I Say! (Grot)

If you view the Terry-Thomas CV as admirable but sadly lacking in any cohesive rap work, then Mr B is the gentleman you’ve been waiting for. Time machine tea dance turntables back B’s raps, thoroughly extolling the various characteristics and capers of the chap, from briar pipe and tweed celebration to a Woosterinspired tribute to raffish employment-swerving. ‘Chap hop’ might not have the same empowering ambitions of hip hop, but it certainly knows a vest is only worn inside a shirt, which should remained buttoned unless accessorised with a cravat. SINGLE: GHETTOZOID • Boy Toy (One4Ho)

Brighton stable One4Ho – the home of mostly 140bpm tempo tunes, put out mostly by ‘hos’ (hey, we didn’t name the label) – goes from strength to strength. Armed with a sardonic, Ladytronesque drawl, label co-founder Ghettozoid is blazing the dubstep/ electronic sub-genre lovestep (kinda dubtronica without the overt lummoxing swag of dubstep). Laconic robo-girl doing intelligent emo dubstep? Inevitable really. (MB)

CURRIES SECRET EATER SPECIAL

Trying to round up Brighton’s best curries was a stupid idea on so many levels. For a start it’s such a personal decision. When we asked for your recommendations we had almost as many places tipped as we did people suggesting them. So maybe your favourite is missing (send hate mail to us on the Brighton SOURCE Facebook fan page) and somewhere you didn’t rate is getting real props. Sorry, that’s the way it is.

On a practical level it wasn’t that wise either. Have you tried to take a photo of a curry and make it look as good as it tastes?

Impossible. Especially in restaurants that tend to be atmospherically dark. And as for describing this complex cuisine without resorting to the word ‘hot’ every time – well, even after months in India and time in Thailand, we simply don’t have the vocabulary to do justice to the many layers of flavour. So, we did our best.

Then there’s the task itself – shovelling down 10 curries in two weeks. There were times that we were longing for a nice bland

NISHAT

BEST CURRY! Preston St

This takeaway joint makes much of the fact that The Guardian called Nishat “the best food outside India”. But it’s worth noting that the quote is 11 years old now and comes from Julie Burchill not a food reviewer. However, this place was highly recommended by many SOURCE readers, who clearly know what they’re talking about. The balti kebab is a great starter for £3.30 – two soft lamb burgers in a rich, warm tomato-based sauce. The chicken tikka jalfrezi (£5.30) has all the punch that the menu promises; in fact the tikka spices are surplus to requirement as we rush for water, and then milk, to calm our mouths. Even more appealing than the intensity is how hearty it is – full of chunks of chicken and vegetables, plus all those chillies. The Madras fried rice (£2.60) is also great – loaded with green beans, mushrooms, carrots and cabbage. Outstanding from start to finish and the leftovers were great cold too. Julie was right after all.

potato and some gravy. But even at our least enthusiastic every one of these curries was a joy to eat. The Twitter and Facebook-following SOURCE readers recommended well. And we know there’s at least another 10 suggestions that could have made the grade. Raj Pavilion, Empire Tandoori, Khans, Ashoka, Elizabethan Tandoori and Eshna’s Nutrition – we promise to get to you next time.

You’ll notice that The Chilli Pickle isn’t in the top ten. Why the hell not? Even though it was by far the most recommended restaurant we couldn’t get a table there. Not because it was busy – it always is – but because it was closed. It’s moving to myhotel in March (see New In Town) and we’ll pop in when we can bring ourselves to get back on the spice.

So here you are, the SOURCE readers’ most recommended curries judged by us. The idea that Brighton can’t do curry ought to be put to bed now as there’s something for everyone here.

PLANET INDIA

Richmond Pl

It took us a few attempts to eat at Planet India – it’s only open for four hours a day (6pm-10pm) and demand for tables is very high.

Getting in without booking is a real gamble. Why so popular? Well, it probably the most Indian of Indian restaurants in Brighton, and the prices are great. Our starter is a revelation from the first mouthful. Dhai Bhel Puri (£4.84) is confusing mix of Bombay mixesque street snacks, coriander, onion, tomato, chickpeas, deliciously sweet tamarind sauce and yogurt. It’s so unusual it can only be authentic. If you can’t decide what main to get you can opt for a half and half (£3.32 each), and we try the mixed vegetable curry and black chick peas curry – the latter is dry in flavour and feel, while the veg curry is the sort you wish you could make at home. Rice is just £1.77 extra, making this great value for money – we didn’t finish and they kindly offered a doggie bag.

HOVE TANDOORI

Church Rd

One of the most recommended restaurants, Hove Tandoori is pure traditional old school Indian, but brought right up to date with class.

Attentive service, a huge menu filled with classics and new twists, there’s plenty to enjoy here. An example of the care that goes into making you feel welcome is that as soon as you sit down the waiters bring you over papadums and pickles. From there we head into a mixed starter (£5.35), which has wonderful quality soft meat, gentle flavours, and as fresh as possible salad. A small bhagi comes straight out of the fryer and is so crisp. The lamb shank nowab (£11.80) leaps right out off the menu and looks great on arrival, draped with thick sauce and green peppers. The meat falls off the bone in the way that you hope it would and there’s a real tang that plays off the wonderfully fragrant rice. There’s clearly a pride that runs right through this place.

SPICE NUTRIMENT

Queens Road

Ask anyone in Brighton to name an Indian takeaway and there’s a fair chance that this one will be the first off their lips. The place is legendary not least because they make a huge effort to be healthy.

Low fat meat, brown rice, extra garlic – it really shows as soon as you tuck in. We start off with a Tandoori chicken quarter (£3.15) that’s almost caramelised, with soft onions and minty raita. Go for the classics, you suggested, so we opted for a chicken bhuna which was fairly gentle on the tastebuds and the stomach. The vegetable side dish was a surprise arrival but a worthwhile addition, padding out the main dish until it turned into two meals. The rice meanwhile was big in grain and taste. Delivery can take a while from Spice Nutriment as they prepare everything to order, but our food arrived much quicker than the estimated one hour. Really healthy takeaway food – and you can’t argue with that.

GIGGLING SQUID

Market St

There seems to have been a Giggling Squid invasion over the last few years, and by all accounts more are coming. That can only be a good thing as their daytime take on Thai tapas is a lovely way to explore lots of different flavours in one meal. From a variety of options we choose the Ped Ped Tapas Set, and, after checking with the chef, they swap the squid with fishcakes (your mileage may vary). Delicious and spongy they are too, but the best thing on the four-sectioned platter is the spicy beef salad which is supersharp, like a punchy Thai salsa. As good as it is, the red curry can’t keep up, tasting creamy and full of tomato after the spiky chilli flavour. But it’s rich, with good crispy veg and a decent amount of soft chicken. Stunning presentation really ups this meal, which is a great experience for just £8.50, and even though you can’t get it in the evening there’s load of interesting options after sundown.

DRUID’S ARMS

Ditchling Rd

The Druid’s is a great little pub that’s always got its eye on doing something interesting – like post-rock music festivals with Nice Weather For Airstrikes for example. There’s a friendly hanging-out vibe, so it’s handy that there is also really good food there, at a price you can indulge yourself with. Just £5.99 no matter which of the six curries you want (even if your meat choice is duck), we decide to go all out for the jungle curry. Not enough places do this intense dish, but with its use of chicken stock rather than coconut milk it’s a really eatable dish if you can handle the heat. The Druid’s version has all the bite and more, and we’ve broken a sweat before we’re halfway through. There’s loads of fresh veg – beans, broccoli, carrots, bamboo and caulifower – and enough meat making it a real bargain for an evening Thai. It’s good too - you can cut yourself on these flavours.

SUKHOTHAI PALACE

Middle St

In the world of treating yourself to a nice lunch, there’s no better bargain than Sukhothai. For five quid there’s a huge range of main courses and a small selection of starters to go with them. Yep, two courses for £5. For that money you wouldn’t mind if the food was average, but this nosh is top notch. The starters – prawn toast, soup, spring rolls and the like – are small but you should think of them as a little bonus. The mains are the reason to come though, and the curries are as good as the stir-frys, which are very popular.

Our green curry comes with a decent amount of chicken and plenty of fresh crisp carrot, soft aubergine and peas. The kick builds quickly and has a real presence, the intensity topped with a heavy hint of Thai basil. There’s no complaining when we sit around in the calm restaurant for an hour and a half chatting. The only down side is that the cheap deal makes the evening meals seem pricy, when they aren’t really. Especially when the food is this good.

KEMPTOWN TANDOORI St Georges Rd

There’s a fair chance that this is a new name to you, but it’s been a longtime favourite of ours not least because of the amazing mixed starter (£4.50) they do. A spicy kebab, solid lamb, quality chicken and piles of salad mean that you could even split it between two, both enjoying the jagged, spicy flavours and garish colours. The curry of choice is as unusual a name as the takeaway – a chicken haq (£7.95). No, it’s a new one for us too – in fact a web search comes up blank. Medium hot, based around onion, lemon and ginger, it’s bursting with intense flavour without battering the taste buds with spice. There’s plenty of Tandoori cooked chicken – dry and rough textured in the way that chicken often isn’t in curries. The onions are lovely and soft though if we’re quibbling then the tomatoes could benefit from a little longer cooking. Give it a try, we think you’ll like it.

INDIAN SUMMER

East St

It’s easy to stick with the tried and tested on an Indian menu because tackling something new usually requires a complete leap of faith. Almost all the curries at this top end restaurant are new to us and, like its neighbour Terre à Terre, we feel a bit out of our depth decoding the descriptions. We needn’t have worried though, Indian Summer’s reputation for quality runs right through it. Our starters of Hyderabadi Dal gosht and Nawabi murgh (see what we mean) feature as good meat as we have in the whole round up, not least in the former’s minced lamb kebab. The punchy flavours are cleared with a cranberry, apple and lime refresher between courses. The Chicken Kala Mirch has rosemary as the key spice, making a unique curry. Meanwhile the lime and ginger in the Goan fish and prawns give it a raw intensity that refuses to overpower the dish. The presentation was incredible, making the two courses for £22 seem reasonable. Pure sophistication.

KRUA ANNE

Kensington Gdns

When we’re feeling a bit flush Krua Anne is a regular lunchtime spot for the SOURCE team, situated as it is, right in the heart of the North Laine. Although it’s not quite as cheap as Soukathai’s lunchtime offering, its main dishes are bigger, though you’ll have to lay down four quid for a huge portion of crisp vegetable tempura (it’s pretty much worth that though). The red curry with chicken (£5.95 at lunchtime, £6.50 in the evening) doesn’t have the fattiness that coconut milk-based dishes can have, making it good for lunch. It’s not too hot but has loads of flavour that just begins to tingle as the last mouthful is shovelled in. You might very well have had equally great food at The Office, as these guys do the same grub there. They must be doing something right because the council gave them the Curry Of The Year for 2010. Yeah, we missed that award too, but the inclusion in this list is another win for Brighton’s best kept open secret.

We couldn’t really do a food issue without stretching our own palates – thankfully we couldn’t find anyone serving horse or dog dishes but you still might be surprised at some of the things we let past our lips for the first time.

CAT FOOD

“IT HAD THAT SLIGHTLY ROUGH TEXTURE. LIKE FRENCH KISSING AN OX.”

My cat Leia – a petite black and white fluffball – adores human food. Marmite on toast, HobNobs, cereal, cheese... If we leave it unattended for a moment, she’s got her face in it. Maybe if I show her how yummy I think her dinner is, she’ll stop being envious of mine. I waited until she was hungry, then emptied a sachet of Felix chicken in jelly (‘as good as it looks’) into two plastic bowls, and made a side dish of Go-Cat tuna, herring and vegetable biscuits on a saucer. I didn’t fancy sharing her water bowl too, so I ran myself a glass from the tap.

I was gagging before the first quivering forkful of Felix entered my mouth. The stringy chicken slivers tasted like the final scrapings of the last kebab in the shop, mashed into cold, sweat-flavoured gelatine. A few stomach-turning chews later I retched and sprayed the jelly down the front of the washing machine. My second attempt was no more successful. Even holding my nose to reduce the flavour, I still spewed it all into the sink. The Go-Cat fared better. After a few crunches it tasted like mouldy Ryvita, but I managed to swallow a few multi-coloured handfuls down. Leia frowned at me from her bowl and carried on eating. She’s welcome to it. (SH)

MCDONALD’S

Yeah, really, I’ve never eaten McDonald’s. It were all Wimpy bars round here when I were a girl. McDonald’s didn’t even roll into our smalltown backwater until I was 17, and by then I’d been indoctrinated by Morrissey into a firm ‘Meat Is Murder’ stance.

When I subsequently relaxed my teenage convictions a little and tucked into a few bacon sandwiches, I still steered clear of McDonald’s, cos they’re evil, right? And their hot chocolate cups tasted of fishy latex. But this year I was out with some relatives who informed me we’d be taking luncheon in McDonald’s. No longer a rabble rouser I reluctantly acquiesced and ordered myself a Big Mac, intrigued to know what all the fuss is about.

The first bite was a disappointment – gherkin, yuck. I removed it and carried on, but the whole thing was tainted with the pickle residue and tasted of very little else. Naming it a Big Mac can only be described as disingenuous – it was small, soggy and not a patch on a Grubbs bacon burger. The whole experience left a bad taste (of gherkins) in my mouth. And they’re called chips not fries, you corporate slags. (RK)

OX TONGUE

Ox tongue. Yes. Seriously. Ox tongue. The tongue of an ox. And what’s worse is that I was in some pretentious restaurant in Hove

so it wasn’t just ox tongue, it was tongue of ox relaxing on a bed of fresh baby greens dressed with a sauce of triple-distilled cat sick. Or something like that. I ordered it because I wondered what eating tongue would be like. And I kind of didn’t think that it would be an actual tongue. In fact it was, and it turns out eating tongue is rather like eating a tongue.

Cooked tongue looks pretty awful. It’s the same colour as a live tongue but just about 10 times more disgusting because it’s cut up into little pieces on your plate. Even the pompous little salad the restaurant kindly disguised it with couldn’t hide the fact it was pretty much a tongue on a plate. Yum. I gave it my best shot. But there is something undeniably disgusting about the feeling of tongue on your tongue. Like French kissing an ox. It has that slightly rough texture and – have you ever bitten your tongue? – crunch. It tasted like the worst kiss ever.

RAW EGG

Eggs are one of my favourite foods. Poached with Hollandaise sauce, scrambled with flaked salmon, fried and dripping with grease from the cafe round the corner – I am a lifelong fan of (cooked) eggs. Yet it seems I haven’t been getting the best out of my egg eating – vitamins are lost and carbohydrate levels are reduced by heating, according to the internet, which is why hardcore protein fans enjoy raw eggs. Well, it’s healthy, and anything old men, bodybuilders and Rocky can do, I can do better.

Feeling full of bravado, I cracked an egg into a glass before my disgusted onlookers. Then, doubt set in. If raw eggs were tasty, they would be on menus. I haven’t eaten the uncooked, unfertilized ovum of any other animals, so why start now? What if I was one of the unlucky 0.0003% and caught salmonella?

What if I died? More pressingly, what if I threw it straight back up?

I poured it into my mouth. The yolk was huge. I spat it back into the glass. I tried again. This time, I gulped with less enthusiasm than if I were swallowing my own hand, and it went down. Slowly.

How was it? I felt sick. Imagine drinking cold phlegm and you’re nearly there. (JMM)

SPACE FOOD

Developed for the early Apollo missions, this freeze-dried ice cream space food is pretty odd. It’s also something you wouldn’t really come across in the shops, so when a work colleague received some from the National Space Centre, I had to get stuck in. It has the consistency of crumbly halva but it tastes like warm ice cream – warm ice cream which is still solid. Very strange.

It comes vacuum packed between two cookies, so it’s more like a halva/ice cream flavoured Oreo sandwich. On a blind taste test I don’t think you’d ever correctly guess what it is. On reading the ingredients, things such as ‘diglycerides’, ‘carrageenan’ and ‘partially hydrogenated soybean and cottonseed oils’ jump out at you and personally put me off a bit. If all astronaut food is this dry (which it probably is) and full of hydrogenated oils, I don’t think I’d enjoy dinner very much in outer space. (KK)

BREAST MILK

The queasy part to this was that someone else had actually produced this from their own mammary glands, which only really dawned on me as I started to drink down a whole glassful. It was a little strange trying to casually ask around for the substance, like some weird fetishist, but thankfully I found a willing party to help me out.

I had imagined it would smell a bit like newborn babies do, but there was no real smell to it – I just had to try it to see. It had separated a little, so I gave it a swirl before decanting it out of the bottle. It was unusually sweet, but with an earthy/ woody undertone to it, a bit like sweetened soya milk but much thinner. I hadn’t given much thought to how it would taste, but seeing how most of us were brought up on the stuff I figured it couldn’t really be all that bad, could it? I hadn’t thought there was that much in there to start with, but it got harder to drink with each contemplative sip.

There was no real aftertaste, but it did sort of coat my tongue a bit. No milk moustache though, I’m afraid. (LS)

CRAB

I’ve never been a fan of fish, and seafood is reminiscent of big insects, so it’s no surprise that I’ve avoided crab all my life. But if you’re going to eat it you may as well do it properly, so I found myself at a crab restaurant with 12 sinister crustaceans in front of me. My determination was tinged with mounting dread as I watched my fellow diners to see what the procedure was. As they hit them with hammers and took their shells off I anticipated seeing crab meat inside, instead I was confronted by slimy green puddles of snot and frondy white conical gills. Trying hard not to gag with utter repulsion I opted for a leg instead. I gingerly pulled it from the body, hit it with a hammer and picked out a tiny morsel of meat, trying not to look at the stringy ligaments. I was sure that if I could overcome my squeamishness I’d experience a taste sensation. After all, with so much effort required for so little meat, it must be good, right? Well no. It was bland and as I chewed I was overwhelmed with revulsion at the crab innards littering the table in front of me. I swallowed quickly before doing a little sick in the back of my mouth. FOIS GRAS

I know what you’re thinking. Force-fed birds, PETA campaigns, horrific YouTube videos, illegal in over 35 countries – a real food taboo. Yet the ancient Egyptians shoved food down their geese, and 18th-century writer Sydney Smith defined heaven as “eating foie gras to the sound of trumpets” so it’s got to be at least a bit tasty, right? First, research. I fire up the Mac and promptly put myself off the whole idea. Shocking practices, awful welfare – google it to find out more.

However, I do consider myself a ‘gastronome’ (I enjoy liver, have eaten frogs’ legs, love black pudding...) and will try pretty much anything at least once. So, having waited a day or so for the memory of my research to fade, one trip to a specialist food shop

later and the jar of ‘bloc de fois gras’ and I are eyeing each other up in the kitchen. Armed with some melba toast and caramelised cherries, in I go.

Wow, what a flavour. Think pâté but richer, with a smooth, mousse-like texture; slightly nutty, almost beefy. Delicious.

Sydney, I’m with you, mate. Just don’t think about where it comes from. Am I glad I drummed up the courage to try it? Yes. Could I eat it again?

On balance, no. The cruelty meted out in its creation definitely outweighs the undeniably lovely flavour. (EI)

RAW BEEF

Popular opinion dictates that a well-cooked steak is the abominable ruin of a good piece of meat. Requesting anything more than mediumrare in a restaurant attracts thinly-veiled sneers from beef connoisseurs and waiters alike, and horrified glances at bloody forks don’t go down well either, or so I’ve found.

My mother is vegan, so the closest I got to the sacred flesh of my fellow mammal was Quorn-based mince, until I reached my teens and rebelled by eating ham. Never one to let principles get in the way of my diet, by my early 20s I’d eaten most meats.

However, I draw the line at anything still oozing blood – surely we’ve evolved to cooking meat for a reason, and that reason is that it tastes better? This separates us from other carnivores, and in my opinion, demonstrates civilisation.

So, here I am, cutlery in hand, gazing nervously at a steak. The term used in restaurants for what I am about to consume is ‘carpaccio,’ presumably because ‘raw meat’ sounds fundamentally unappetising. I tuck in. The metallic taste of blood fills my mouth, though it’s not as strong as I expected. The texture is undeniably chewy, so I chew, probably for longer than necessary. How was it? Not as bad as I thought, but still not pleasant, with less taste than it has cooked. I’ll continue to leave rare beef to the savages. Well done, please waiter. (JMM)

WHEATGRASS

Shotting wheatgrass seems to be a fad in Brighton at the moment, with many people opting for the quick ‘hangover miracle’ it’s known as. People in their numbers are heading down to the Guarana Bar in Sydney Street but no matter how bad the hangover, I could never face doing a shot of something consumed by cows. Any time I thought about trying wheatgrass I imagined a bed of grass growing in my stomach and quickly hushed the thought away. So, the day finally dawned on me where I couldn’t handle the hangover that had been visited upon me. I marched down to the Guarana Bar with my head hanging low, hoping for this supposed cure to rinse my pain away. It all seemed very serious – they served my shot of wheatgrass with a strawberry chopped in half and a small glass of water, which they told me I’d have to take to stop me being sick. I downed the shot like a true trooper, munched the strawberry, gulped the water and well, what can I say, it tasted like grass. Did it work? Have you ever seen a cow with a hangover? (SD)

A recent émigré to London, where she works for a digital agency making websites and mobile apps, we spotted Katie while she was back having some downtime in her old homestead of Brighton, for a day’s outing of pancakes and a go on the waltzers, We think it’s fair to say 80s fashions never die – Katie’s keeping them well and truly alive by making some of their fundamentals look entirely contemporary.

Maker of the finest sausages we’ve ever had, Brighton Sausage Co. is the closest we’ve got on our quest for the perfect sausage roll.

How come your sausages and sausage rolls are so amazing?

It’s the quality of the meat and the amount of meat that makes them taste good. We only use pork shoulder and back fat in the sausages, we don’t use scraps of bits and pieces.

Sausage rolls normally have a lot more rusk added to them but we don’t do that.

Sausages have had a real resurgence from the old Wall’s days. Do you have to win people over to the idea of sausages?

Attitudes have changed in the last 10 years or so. People expect a little shop like ours to have decent meat products.

We’ve been here four-and-a-half years now so I think people are aware of what we do.

What are the most popular sausages you sell?

The more weird and wonderful ones that we do tend to be the most requested ones. We do a pork and marmite sausage, and smoked bacon and maple syrup. The traditional breakfast sausages are the most popular otherwise.

Have you always liked sausages? How come you ended up with a sausage shop?

Me and my co-owner Dave Barr both worked with food, and sausages, a few years before, so we had a passion for it. We sort of did what we knew already, and thought it would work in Brighton as a nice little niche shop. If we did it right and were nice to people we thought we could get a following.

For crazy people who don’t like sausages, what else do you sell?

Our bacon’s very good, it’s traditionally cured. We also do some very good steak, we’ve got the room to hang it for a good 30 days to get some flavour into it. And we’ve got a well-stocked cheese counter too.

Food you can grow in your garden for free? We’ll have some of that. VegfestUK is coming to town to promote the health benefits of veggie food while retaining a surprising tolerance to those with a lingering flesh requirement. We spoke to organiser Tim Barford about what’s in his pot.

Vegetarianism has come a long way since the old hippie stereotypes, but there’s still a lot of cynicism about it.

Yes there is, but the tables are turning – there’s a lot of cynicism about people who eat unhealthily since people like Jamie Oliver got involved. The idea of feeding your kids Turkey Twizzlers or mechanically recovered meat isn’t attractive or clever. You might have laughed at the ‘lettuce and rabbit food’ 20 years ago but to laugh at healthy eating these days is not so cool.

The cookery demos at VegFest must help get new people on board.

People are moved by taste and habit – we’re led to food by taste and develop a habit of eating it. We’re trying to break that and introduce new tastes and new habits. It’s just a lot easier when someone shows you how to do it, and you’re off.

It’s important to get kids involved as well, to develop those habits early.

It is, and they can come along, get in free and try it all for free – of course they’ll turn their noses up at some of it and that’s fine, but if they latch onto something their parents literally follow them round and make a note of it all, and they buy it and integrate it into their diet.

are also very good online shops these days, like for specific vegan items. We love to see models like Infinity Foods, a co-operative who manage their own supplies. Them and Unicorn Grocery in Manchester or the People’s Supermarket in London; they make sure there’s a fair price for everyone; consumer and supplier. If they can achieve that, which they can, there’s no reason why everybody else can’t.

The festival sounds quite evangelical as well as just a celebration of vegetarianism.

Yes, it definitely reaches out to people, especially as it’s free. I appreciate there’s a lot of people who like meat and are in no hurry to give it up, but for various reasons are looking to cut their consumption and eat more fruit and veg. By having a load of free tasters, a licensed bar and music, it dresses it all up. You can pop in, have a good time and also gain an awful lot of insight.

Having it in Brighton you’re preaching to the converted to some extent – veggies are well catered for here. It’s different elsewhere though.

It is if you eat out a lot, but a lot of people relax their dietary regulations and go with the flow a bit. It’s perfectly acceptable to be vegan at home and vegetarian when you go out, or vegetarian at home but sometimes make the compromise to eat fish. It’s not really about being restricted; it’s about making a conscious effort to restrict your intake. Eat steak if you like, but maybe once a month rather than once a week.

So you’re approaching this from more of a health than moralistic perspective.

The ingestion of edibles in a cinema setting stretches to both sides of the screen – just as well, since a six of the best overpriced pick’n’mix choices wouldn’t make much of a riveting read. These are our favourites from the movie menus.

9½ WEEKS

Back in the 80s, when Mickey Rourke didn’t look like his own melted waxwork, this film alerted us to the hitherto unexplored erotic possibilities of the refrigerator. In something of a sexy trust exercise, he has Kim Basinger close her eyes before popping various chilled comestibles into her mouth. It’s to the director’s credit that the sexy actress with all food and juice down her chin doesn’t look like a stroke victim after a dentist visit; indeed it was one of the most famous, erotically-charged movie moments of the decade. In the end, Rourke covers her in honey and they have it off. (NC)

INDIANA JONES & THE TEMPLE OF DOOM

It might not be the best Indy film, but the feast scene is one of the most memorable in the trilogy (we refuse to recognise that Crystal Skull nonsense). A perfect balance of gross and light comedy, the moment the “snake surprise” is sliced open to reveal innards full of live eels you know this is going to be difficult to stomach. The eyeball soup and big beetles seem relatively palatable compared to the dessert – monkey brains still in the head of the monkey. Even Heston would think twice. (JK)

PULP FICTION

When hired assassins Jules and Vincent pay Brad and his buddies a surprise morning visit, they discover the boys tucking in to Big Kahuna burgers, “the cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast”.

Helping himself, Jules commends their choice of tasty burger, which he washes down with a long, close-up slurp of Sprite while quizzing them on European fast food nomenclature. This apparently sociable meal setting is underpinned with a sense of immense and terrifying menace, which plays out true to form when Jules summarily executes a boy on the sofa while Brad is in mid plea. MONTY PYTHON’S MEANING OF LIFE

Before the days of Channel 5, the frighteningly obese were seldom made into screen stars. Apart from in this memorable scene though, where John Cleese waits on a dirigible-sized diner, pressing him with course after course made room for via his projectile vomiting into a silver bucket. As his fellow diners gamely continue their meals amidst this precipitation of puke, our hefty hero is tempted to sample one last item, the wafer thin mint. It proves to be the final straw for his gastric capacity however, and he explodes, showering the room with guts and bile. (NC)

RATATOUILLE

Of all the movies here, Ratatouille has to be the most foodie, the most mouth-watering and the most inventive, and all whilst being just a collection of drawings – no real food was hurt during the making of this feature. If, like UB40, the idea of rats in the kitchen (and these are very ratty rats all over the kitchen) turns your stomach, be prepared to have it back on an even keel by the end. Like the best recipes, it’s perfectly balanced – thoughtful and nuanced, and at the same time a colourful, funny animated yarn. (MB)

As movie purists we shun the notion of the pointless remake, so this series of moral and dietary warnings comes from the 1971 original. Any of the golden ticket winners’ fates cuts the movie mustard, but our favourite is Augustus Gloop. A moralistic fable of greed and consumption, his disobedient hand-to-mouth nomming of pure melted chocolate from the indoor river sees him being unceremoniously taken up the fudge pipe. This, together with the various fates of Veruca Salt, Mike Teevee and Violet Beauregarde, set the bar high for subsequent cinematic child abuse. (NC)
