your gig charter

The other day we went to see Public Image Ltd play at the Concorde, which was absolutely astounding. But halfway through the gig someone whipped out a camera and started videoing a song. Not a problem, except that the camera was in front of our face. So we came home and wrote an editor’s letter about how people shouldn’t film at gigs, mainly cos they’re missing the fun of actually being there. As well meant as it was, at the last minute we spiked it (you can read it at tinyurl.com/ StopDontShoot). While worrying about the article’s tone we went to see The Wedding Present, again at the Concorde, and again brilliant. Not many cameras there but the 40-year-olds in the moshpit were going crazy to songs of heartbreak and despair. Was that right? We weren’t sure. But we thought that we should make a list of what should and shouldn’t be allowed at gigs. Or more to the point SOURCE readers should. So we want you to email the biggest gig-going sins to james@brightonsource.co.uk and we’ll write a charter. What are the rules on talking? Is it OK to bring four beers back from the bar to your mates down the front? Where should tall people stand? Let us know and we’ll draft up a version for debate on Facebook and Twitter and put the ratified version in the magazine.

Pride party

At the start of the year it looked touch and go as to whether Pride would take place this summer at all. Fortunately, the city has pulled together to put on what could well be the biggest Pride party yet. The colourful LGBT Parade gets underway from Madeira Drive on Sat 1st at 11am. Tickets for the subsequent Preston Park party are available on the gate, starting at £10 for students. Fatboy Slim, Freemasons and Alexandra Burke are the main attractions,

Skatepark approved

It’s been a long time coming but the council has finally approved a concrete skatepark for The Level as part of its £2.2m Lottery grant-funded restoration. So far there’s £150,000 to build the sunken, polished concrete park north of the Rose Walk. There’s been a skate park at The Level since the 70s, but it’s been in a pretty poor state for a while so this is great news for the city’s skaters and BMX riders.

Board of Brighton

Paul Stapleton, cartoonist and musician (Pog, Anal Beard), has rather a love/hate relationship with Brighton. His regular comic strip BN1 satirises, and occasionally just rips the piss out of, the colourful characters that make Brighton such a wonderful and irritating place to live. He’s now developed the brilliant BN1 – The Board Game, where players battle to have the most interesting day in the city, encountering dozens of local eccentrics and clichés en route. PEARLS bubble tea CAFE

The centre of Brighton is already over-run with Costas, Starbucks and Caffè Neros, so it takes a brave person to open an independent right alongside the chains. Rarely lacking selfbelief, Peter Andre is that man, and he and his brothers are the brains behind New York Coffee Club. They’ve picked a great location next to the Clock Tower, and the café includes a kids’ play area, so business for the pop charmer and his bros should be good.

Brighton & Hove have an exciting new music venue. Brighthelmstone Promotions have teamed up with the good folks at The Palmeira on Cromwell Road to bring the finest Americana to the city. The venue has a capacity of 130 and a brand new custom built stage and lighting rig. Appearing soon under the Live At The Palmeira banner are the likes of Mark Eitzel, The Dreaming Spires, Elliott Brood and Kelly Joe Phelps.

With fashionable roots, being located on the site of the old BIBA boutique along Queens Road, Green Brick buy and trade store is a haven for those bargain hunters with a love of labels. Not only can you buy, you can also trade your much-loved vintage clothes, shoes and accessories, putting your ethical mind at ease. A win-win situation we say.

HOURGLASS

Following the closure of Xuma bar in Seven Dials, Brighton’s Small Batch Coffee Company will be taking over the premises later in the year. In the meantime, pop up bar specialists Off The Map have been invited to bridge the gap between one business and the next by running a temporary late night venue on site – Hourglass. With live music and DJs lined up for their short residency, head up there to check out what’s happening soon, because by the time word gets around they might very well be long gone.

Created by the team from Riddle & Finns in the Lanes and the former Due South seafront restaurant, Yum Yum Ninja is a new pan-Asian restaurant on Meeting House Lane. Diners can eat inside and out, with a courtyard area designed to replicate the experience of an Asian night market with its parasols, banners and festoon lighting. There’s an upstairs bar serving cocktails, sake, umeshu, Japanese whisky and other delights.

Punning urban food café Soup-Urb is now open on Trafalgar Street, offering a seasonal menu of fresh local food. The café’s great love is hearty, natural soups, with a rotating range of daily flavours available. There are plenty of other breakfasts, sandwiches, salads and other meals available, with an emphasis on Fair Trade, sustainable ingredients and bio-degradeable packaging.

Bubble tea is fairly new to British shores, although it’s a beverage that’s been gaining popularity around the world since its invention in 1980s Taiwan. Essentially, the ‘teas’ are fruit or milk blended drinks served with ‘bubbles’ of soft tapioca pearls or fruit jelly, and served hot or cold. Pearls Bubble Tea Cafe on Gardner Street are introducing the drink to Brightonians, and are already gaining big fans in the SOURCE office.

Zushi

There’s a new Japanese sushi café opening on Prince Albert Street in the Lanes this month. Zushi promises fresh fish and hand made dishes including Temaki Zushi (take away sushi in a hand-rolled cone) and traditional, pressed Oshi Zushi. The café comes complete with Japanese music and magazines, while their online shop offers more food and sushi making kits for sale.

Woodpecker Wooliams

When Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci split back in 2006, the prospect of frontman/all-rounder Euros Childs retreating to a life outside of music, or disappearing completely, was too depressing to contemplate. But we needn’t have worried. Since then, he’s appeared on a frankly alarming number of records and visited Brighton under various guises. Now back promoting ‘Summer Special’, staggeringly his tenth solo work, he’s playing to his charming glam-folk strengths once more, and is here backed – and supported – by Glasgow’s The Wellgreen. (JKn)

A specially curated night to launch the apiarist’s new avianthemed album ‘Bird School Of Being Human’. The combination of blissful yet haunting harp and the scratchy background of the songs are the perfect platform for Wooliams’ singular voice to sweep over. She’ll be performing as part of a trio and support comes from a newly formed dark folk super group named K L O W K, plus surprise special guests. Get there early for the home made honey mead. (SC)

In short, one of the best live bands you could wish to see. Support comes from hotly tipped locals Hatful Of Rain. (IC)

Richard Hawley’s acclaimed solo career got off the ground with an eponymous 2000 debut, recorded with the encouragement of old Sheffield friends Steve Mackay and Jarvis Cocker, although he’s been a working musician since his school band Treebound Story got signed way back in 1986. This year’s ‘Standing At The Sky’s Edge’ found Hawley bringing back guitars in a big way to complement his smooth croon and long developed, forever in demand songwriting and production skills. (SH)

It’s often suggested Scandinavians understand the English language better than native speakers, and no-one confirms this more than Lekman. The intricate wordplay underpinning his darkly comic songs, about struggles in love and life, rate amongst the best songwriting of the past decade. Live, he’s an absolute charmer, someone who may well personally accompany you afterwards, singing, to the nearest bus stop (we’ve seen it happen). Expect uplifting, downbeat, fiery and mellow indie folk. Think Jeffrey Lewis meeting Leonard Cohen in a snowstorm. (AP)

TALL SHIPS CLEVER AND EMOTIONAL, ARE THIS TRIO THE ULTIMATE INDIE BAND? WORDS BY JAMES KENDALL PHOTO BY KENNY MC CRACKEN AT CREATE ASSISTED BY MATTHEW RING

Tall Ships are a confident band. Not arrogant, just quietly sure that they can do things right if they put in the graft. Take the last song on their long awaited, long worked on debut album ‘Everything Touching’. ‘Murmurations’ is a nine-minute song that takes two thirds of that time to really find its stride, but when it does it’s one of the most joyous songs to come out of Brighton this year. A light electric guitar flutters around a simple four to the floor kick drum and it’s three minutes before we even get any bass. But if you hang in there for as much time again, the emotive track builds as the drums arrive. A choir of over 30 friends, family and fans sing their hearts out from seven minutes and you wonder if the hairs on the back of your neck could stand up any more straight. It is – if we try to keep calm about things – an absolute masterpiece. “It’s the most Tall Ships song we’ve ever done,” says singer and guitarist Ric. “When we started we used loops, which by their very nature constantly go round. You repeat yourself and put it on top and ‘Murmurations’ is sort of the ultimate result of that. We wanted to get as many people on that track as possible so I think there’s about 40 or 45 people on there. I mean, 30 people in the choir that sing at the end and us guys playing instruments.”

the album is, Ric offers ‘Oscar’, a hard-edged, crunchy ballad. “Lyrically it’s the song that means the most to me,” he says. “It’s sung about someone who is very important to me and I love to perform it because I can completely lose myself in it. It’s just about that very pure feeling of when someone you love very much is hurting, and that kind of feeling where you’d just do anything for them.” Not only does Ric like to lay himself on the line personally when he sings the song, he enjoys performing it most when the person the song is about is there in the crowd to sing it to. It’s a pretty brave way to be on stage. “I think there’s nothing worse than vacuous lyrics,” Ric says with passion. “I think there’s a worrying trend at the moment in a lot of music where lyrically it’s all kind of empty, and singing about stuff that doesn’t mean anything to them. Every word I sing I believe in. If I didn’t believe in it then I just wouldn’t sing it.” That means the whole album is about real people the band know, real places they’ve been and their own emotions. It’s a hugely personal piece and that shows in the performance. ‘Everything Touching’ is very aptly named. This self-assuredness – doing things their own way, the right way – meant they were also confident enough to turn down the SOURCE cover last year, during the Seamonsters festival, preferring to wait for this moment when their album was ready to release. It turned out to be a wise move, as even without us thrusting their features into 60,000 readers’ faces they still sold out their gig faster than any of the other bands at the Brighton round up. “We were quite surprised by it because they did a whole week of that festival,” says bassist Matt. “We were completely baffled by it all, just to see how many people were in there. It was amazing.” Happily notching up the tickets sales since then, the next step is headlining The Haunt next month. “It feels like a step up,” admits drummer Jamie. “I’ve been to a couple of shows there but normally go for the It Is Still 1985 80s night, so it will actually be quite funny playing there.” It comes after some amazing gigs, as far away as Brazil and New York (for the CMJ festival), and including tours with Metronomy, 65daysofstatic and We Are Scientists. Oh, and they played Bestival last year too. “We’re very lucky as a band that we’ve been offered a lot of support slots,” says Jamie. “Through them we’ve played a hell of a lot of shows and got to where we are now. Through actually playing directly to people, they connected with us, because our recorded material previously I don’t think has ever really lived up to what the live experience is like.”

Gay Beautiful Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Sat 1st

Stay Beautiful’s stylish nights of sleazy glamdrogyny are perfectly suited to this weekend’s Pride Brighton & Hove celebrations, and you can bet that DJs Simon Price, David Ryder-Prangley and Richey Watson have been brainstorming every LGBT track, artist or innuendo they can think of for weeks and weeks. There’s a chance to win an erotic Little Rooster vibro-alarm clock too, thanks to its inventor, Stay Beautiful’s own Trevor Baylis of glitter, Tony Maggs. (SH)

Move

Life Weds 5th

It’s been a while since a new mid-week dance music night shimmied into our calendar, so we’re more than happy to welcome Move, dedicated to showcasing the best up and coming talent from the UK bass scene. Expect to hear the cream of the British crop in house, techno, breaks and everything with a bit of bass. On the roster they’ve got South London Ordnance, Bheling & Simpson and Eliphino. We’re looking forward to the weekly Move livening up many a Wednesday to come. (ZC)

Concorde 2 Thurs 6th

Bonobo’s Simon Green is a New Yorker these days, but he’s out on tour and calling in on his old home tonight. Bonobo’s last full album, 2010’s ‘Black Sands’, teamed his downtempo beats with a newer electonic bass sound, plus the vocals of fellow Brighton songstress and Ninja Tunes labelmate Andreya Triana – pushed further on a remix companion out this year. For this show, Bonobo’s performing a DJ set alongside Tru Thoughts founder Robert Luis, triggering the live visuals as he goes. (SH)

SUNLESS ‘97

Green Door Store Fri 7th

For a while, your boys Aereo (a Teen Creeps endeavour) have been bringing the buzziest (and best) buzz bands to beautiful Brighton - from Blood Orange to Blouse. Sunless ‘97 are next up, and they are genuinely excellent. Main dude Ed Eke has taken things a world away from his previous outfit (Larrikin Love) into a place of half-broken synths and kraut-y grooves, with Matt McGough’s louche bass and Alice Davies’ sublime, tripped out vocals, all jammed out from around a table of musical bric-a-brac. Haunt Thurs 13th

Prolific hip hop guru El-P is wordy, paranoid and a devout sci-fi fan, and does a mean sideline in highly memorable remixes for artists as diverse as Das Racist and Dizzee Rascal. In the two decades he’s been active, he’s been committed to only releasing high quality works, and May’s release of his fourth studio ‘Cancer 4 Cure’ is no exception. Lead single ‘The Full Retard’’s delightful video of squirrel puppets living the coke-sniffin’, ho-lovin’ rap lifestyle shows his subversive humour’s still in place and his DJ sets are renowned as highly skilled and fun. Two fine British labels go head to head at tonight’s Concorde show. We were raving about Tru Thoughts’ supergroup Sleepin Giantz album last month, and all three of those bass heavyweights, Zed Bias, Rodney P and Fallacy, are in attendance this evening. Representing the Ninja Tune empire are Jake Wherry from hip hop specialists The Herbaliser, and Brighton’s own drum’n’bass scientists The Qemists. In keeping with Ninja Tune’s groundbreaking AV adventures, ‘infinity helmets’, ‘gameboy suits’ and ‘sound corridors’ are promised. (SH)

AKAAKAROAR

Life Fri 21st

The AKA crew deliver more ROAR for the dancefloor with another stellar line-up. We could dance to the beat of Mosca’s drum every night ‘til our feet wore through to the bone: his love for house music underpins every set and means that Jus-Ed is an ideal dude to share the decks with. Ed’s the daddy of Northeastern deep house, with his label Underground Quality instrumental in spreading a love for the genre as well as spotting and developing talent in its infant stages. If anyone knows how to party it’s him. (ZC)

Growing old ungracefully, Audio have got Tru Thoughts’ Rob Luis upstairs providing the slamming sounds to their free terrace BBQ, with Pablo Contraband and Neal Schtuum spinning inside later. Downstairs’ celebrations are headed by Boddika and Oneman. Boddika’s productions are at the forefront of electronic music, their dark pensiveness and instinctual edginess summed up in the acidic stomper ‘Swims’. Oneman is a DJ’s DJ – often mixing northern soul with the freshest new dubs of UK bass music, his sets always have us crate-digging the next day. (ZC)

Jack Beats

Digital Sat 22nd

More bombastic, bass driven fidget house from Jack Beats, the duo of ex-Scratch Pervert Plus One and Mixologist Beni G. The pair have two mini albums about to drop, including club banger ‘Careless’, where twanging synthlines reverberate with a warm affection as sing-along vocals bounce over the top. Dub Phizix and Strategy are in support to help bolster the already big room sonics with some gruff ruggedness, but hopefully sans the intimidating tribal headdress. (ZC)

Frankly, ‘Punch The Troll In The Neck’ is a great song title, and non-sunny Californian Mono/Poly’s its proud creator. He’s been on our radar since the release of the unsettling and disconnected ‘Manifestations’ EP on Brainfeeder last year. Equally influenced by space, computer games, sleazy synths and plain old dubstep, his experimental tracks are led by a stuttering bass comparable to Samiyam or Teebs. Manni Dee, Alphabet’s Heaven and Simon Lxve are in support, representing Mono/Poly’s Brighton competition. (JMM)

Every genre gets a look in: you’ll be merrily skanking to Beenie Man before Sean Paul drops in and your lighter’s flickering above your head. From reggae to ragga, soca to ska, dancehall to bashment, the old school riddims are kept fresh by blending in a bit of hip hop, grime and funky. Art

The Undercliff Undercliff, Rottingdean Thur 6th and Sat 8th Words By Ben Miller

Cyclists and walkers who’ve weaved beyond the Marina will know there are few better places combining the geographically spectacular and tranquil than the undercliff at Rottingdean. So it’s a wonder, then, that more public art hasn’t been inspired by its beauty. The Digital Festival and Brighton & Hove Open Doors (who let the public in to hidden historic places each September) have organised this photographic foray by Jonathan Hyde, whose ambition befits the scenery. Projecting pictures, film and audio on to the cliff face, he wants to light up the space and show how it unites us, creating an amphitheatre within the crags of the chalk, positioning the wall as a fortress against the erosive sea. The projection starts at 7.30pm and lasts an hour and a half on both nights, and Lyn Neville of Brighton Walks hopes to convey the spirit of the undercliff with a short tour on the opening evening.

Event: Brighton Craft Fair Friends’ Meeting House Sat 1st

‘Be local, buy local’ is a whole lot easier when the venue is slap bang in the middle of town. Held on the first Saturday of every month, the Brighton Craft Fair is packed to bursting with beautiful things handmade by lovely, local people. If you fancy a quiet afternoon’s perusal, head down to Ship Street between 11am and 5pm. It’s free too. (TT)

Film: Shut Up And Play The Hits Duke Of York’s Tues 4th

A quick return to Madison Square Garden following last month’s Beastie Boys film for the already legendary swansong from LCD Soundsystem. The film, as well as capturing the almost four hour performance, follows James Murphy in the days leading up to the concert, then shows him the morning after as he tries to make sense of the enormity of his decision to end the band. Following the film there’s a live (via satellite) Q&A with the man himself. (SC)

Art: Chewing Gum For The Eyes

Northern Lights from Tues 4th

Billy Mather describes his first solo show as a collection of belowaverage drawings and paintings, calling himself “conceited” and predicting your favourite listings mag will find it all “painfully unoriginal”. His words might be funnier than the migraine that exhibition descriptions usually resemble, but unfortunately they’re still bullshit because he’s one of the most brilliant illustrators in Brighton, with a particular talent for hilarious drawings of dream-like comic worlds. If you’ve enjoyed the art festooning Sticky Mike’s, don’t miss this. (BM)

Birmingham’s contribution to the development of British reggae, punk and bhangra is deep rooted and often heavily political. Deborah Aston’s documentary investigation includes contributions from dozens of musicians from each of the overlapping scenes (from Steel Pulse and UB40, through The Beat and Dexys, to Achanak and Apna Sangeet). Brighton’s Spinningchilli team branch out from gig to movie promotion for this intimate screening, which includes a Q&A with Prefects/Nightingales guitarist Alan Apperley and Cravats/Very Things mainstay The Shend. The man behind the villain, Tom Hardy, plays Forrest Bondurant – a “heavy with a heart” – in the second collaboration between John Hillcoat and Nick Cave, following 2005’s well-received The Proposition. In brutal Ohio, Guy Pearce plays a psycho and Gary Oldman is a gangster as chancers skirmish with the law and rival mobs. In a world lacking hard-edged Westerns, this one looks worthy of a little salivation. As a bonus, Cave and Hillcoat will get together for a Q&A chat after the Wednesday 5th showing. (BM)

Art: MA2012

University of Brighton Gallery Fri 14th – 21st

Brighton Uni MA shows are usually an exercise in unpredictable precocity, and a gaggle of artists from the Sequential Design, Illustration and Arts disciplines are destined to keep you boggling here. The promise of wordless comics set in 1940s California, interactive objects triggering sensory childhood memories and the perceived eccentricity of the animal world should moisten anyone’s curiosity. Autobiographical insights into anorexia and the emotional pertinence of a grass skirt growing in a chest of drawers sound equally enlightening. (BM)

Film: The Naked Civil Servant Jubilee Library Sun 16th

Showing as part of City Reads literary festival this is a free showing of Thames Television’s acclaimed Quentin Crisp biopic. John Hurt turned in a BAFTA winning performance as Britain’s greatest ‘stately homo’ and it remains a fascinating story of triumph in the face of adversity, peppered throughout with Crisp’s razor-sharp bon mots. His heroically dogged determination to be his own man and his unique perspective on life make for a moving and inspiring film. (SC)

Theatre: Oh My Irma Upstairs at Three and Ten Tues 18th

After receiving rave reviews for her oddball heroine, Mission Bird, Canadian actress Haley McGee decided to raise 5,000 bucks to take her wall-bouncing girl with a dodgy haircut on a small international tour. All those donations seem ostensibly gladdening given the funding crisis throttling chance-taking theatre, and even the reviews which were unimpressed suggest an intense performer with a twisted tale to tell. Poetry: Brighton Poets Red Roaster Fri 21st

A caffeinated bardfest headlined by Tony Frisby, a lover of the Sussex landscape whose new collection, Letters To A Cave In Saltdean, aims for the feel of epic postcards, apparently supplemented by howling children. Frisby is an Irish voice with stories from the Middle East and London, and his travels have imbued him with the belief that existentialism is our best shot at understanding the world. He’s supported here by new young verse writer Alice Walker and Vanessa Austin Locke. (BM)

Art: Biba And Beyond: Barbara Hulanicki

Brighton Museum & Art Gallery 22nd Sept – 14th Apr

A cutting-edge style icon, once gracing the Brighton high street scene, Biba revolutionised the way we shop. Its affordable 60s fashion meant that we, the average civilian, could browse alongside our fashionable idols, something which Barbara Hulanicki has again recently made possible with a collection available in every teenage girls’ favourite haunt, tax dodging Topshop. In order to reminisce and appreciate Hulanicki’s work, ‘Biba And Beyond’ tells the story of this influential brand, through photography, illustrations, film and music. What’s more, if you’re lucky enough to be a Brighton resident, you get discounted entry. (AB)

Comedy: Paul Merton – Out Of My Head Old Market Thurs 27th – Sat 29th

In preparation for its West End run, Paul Merton brings his Out Of My Head show to Hove for three nights. Locally Sourced Words By Ben Bailey, Chris Biggs, zac colbert, Stuart Huggett, Jessica Marshall McHattie, Adam Peters

Album: The Thlyds Thalidomidas Touch (Corporate Records)

“Hey journalist, fuck you... I don’t care to be seen in your shit magazine” rails the chorus on track two of, er, our review copy. Mentored by the Lewes Cowell, Simon Indelicate, this teen toon trio’s debut CD is a turbo-charged electro punk swearfest. Jubilee single ‘I Fucked The Queen’ and ‘If I Wanted A Job (I’d Have Been Born A Cunt)’ are desperate to shock, but lovehate duet ‘I Fingered You’ and a Springsteen-esque closer reveal vulnerability behind the ire. A guilty pleasure. (AP)

EP: Gnarwolves

CRU (Tangled Talk/Day By Day Records)

These three lads from Cornwall, now living in Brighton, have really been making a name for themselves in recent months. Following their spot at last month’s Hevy Festival, the release of their fantastically catchy new EP couldn’t have come at a better time. Gnarwolves play what they describe as “gruff poppunk”, think Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater videogames crossed with a love for post-hardcore and pizza. ‘Community, Stability, Identity’ and closing anthem ‘Coffee’ are stand-out tracks, but all six are incredibly infectious. (CB)

Album: Why Diet When You Could Riot (Tuff Enuff)

Lovely pinky-purple vinyl compilation of some of the bands who’ve played at Riots Not Diets’ excellent first 12 months of shows. Rounding up a baker’s dozen of riot grrrl and queercore bands, highlights include Ste McCabe’s irresistibly perky ‘Queer Clubbing’, Milky Wimpshake’s Buzzcocks-esque ‘Uncool Jerk’ and Woolf’s high energy trash through Elastica’s Brighton anthem ‘Annie’. Smart use of spoken word guests, crowd chatter and stage announcements from the West Hill Hall make this LP an essential snapshot of the scene. (SH)

Album: POG

Between The Station And The Sea (Beside The Birdbath)

The latest Pog album is a loosely-bound collection of tales of everyday failure set in Brighton. Though the band’s sound has evolved from lo-fi acoustic punk into lo-fi fiddle-led folk, the lyrics have lost none of their down-to-earth sensibilities.

Page 38

spectrasoul

Anyone who’s seen Paul Stapleton’s biscuit-headed comic strips will recognise the sort of wry humour at work here. There’s songs about carboot sales and care homes, rants about trustafarians and a romantic ode to the old woman who feeds the birds on the Steine. A witty and quirky homegrown gem. (BB)

Album: Speak Galactic Severed (Cupboard Music)

Severed is the joint effort of producer Owen Thomas and live drummer Jim Morrison, and has taken years to craft. From the early days of bedroom production in Sweden to recent support slots for Casiotone For The Painfully Alone, their music has progressed and developed into something other-worldly and multi-influenced. Opener ‘Capsule’ is a soft, melodic track which sighs like waves, whilst ‘Lux’ builds into a aching crescendo. The album launch party is on Saturday 15th at Fitzherberts, where the very first LPs, hot off the presses, will be available to buy. (JMM)

Single: Dialect & Kosine Mount Zion / Got To Be Conscious (Jungle Alliance)

This double A-side from Dialect & Kosine sees them match the reggae vocals of King General with tight dub beats and Amen breaks. ‘Mount Zion’ is a relaxed yet vibrant tune, with a vibrating bassline and echoing vocals, whilst ‘Got To Be Conscious’ is a step into the political, with a heavy undercurrent, designed for the dancefloor. Overall it’s a successful release for late summer: ragga influences and understated production techniques lead to two very well-structured and gracious tunes. (JMM)

Album: SpectraSoul ‘Delay No More’ (Shogun Audio)

Despite a meteoric rise to fame, Jack and Dave took their time producing this album and it shows. Every track is well considered, whether it’s the coolly triumphant chords on ‘Light In The Dark’ or the technical precision of ‘Away With Me’ with its stripped back, minimally naked drum loops. The record’s got a maturity and contemplative patience that means it wouldn’t be out of place in the background of a Guardian readers’ down-with-the-kids dinner party as much as in the tinny earphones of that spotty school-boy on the bus. Brighton Digital Festival Words By Stuart Huggett, Ben Miller

Running throughout September, Brighton Digital Festival sees the city’s artistic and digital communities coming together for a month of innovative collaboration. Programme events range from specialised talks and conferences to large scale performances and projections, with many free, educational pieces aimed at engaging with the city as a whole. Here’s just a handful of highlights, picked from the endless scroll of the festival website.

David Blandy: Odysseys Lighthouse Sat 1st - Sun 23rd

David Blandy is possibly the best – if not, certainly among the best – at transferring the pop culture of video games, video, anime and television into gallery settings, wittily deconstructing it but also spiking important thoughts about how this whirr of noise and immediacy permeates the way we process things. The exhibition, Odysseys, is accompanied by a screening of anime feature Princess Mononoke (Duke Of York’s, Mon 17th), a comic book workshop (Phoenix, Weds 19th) and a tournament on loads of arcade machines (Phoenix, Sat 22nd). The launch event for the festival is an interactive digital fireworks display, projected onto the façade of Jubilee Library. First seen outside the Unitarian Church during 2008’s festival, and returning in new, higher resolution development, Seb Lee-Delisle’s creation allows audience members to use their body movements to trigger rocket explosions from glowing orbs of light. You point, they explode. Marvellous. (SH)

Brighton SF

Pavilion Theatre Thurs 6th

An evening of readings and discussions from three leading British SF authors: Brian Aldiss, Lauren Beukes and Brighton resident Jeff Noon. In the context of the festival, SF stands for the broader ‘speculative fiction’, an umbrella term incorporating science fiction, of course, as well as other fantasy writings. Veteran author Aldiss is the big draw here, with nearly 60 years of published short stories, novels, poetry and criticism to his name, including the literary kernel of Spielberg’s A.I. (SH)

Mini Maker Faire

Corn Exchange Sat 8th

Spilling out from the Corn Exchange and into the Dome bar and foyer, this year’s free Mini Maker Faire brings together over 50 stalls of scientific and craft creativity for all ages. Activities range from building

model quadcopters (yes, a multi-rotor ‘copter) and hot air balloons to learning about digital coding. A foyer bar after-party features sound artists, DJs and interactive exhibits, and the chance to socialise more informally with the Faire’s stallholders. (SH)

Windowbot

Mesmerist / North Laine Sat 15th – Thurs 30th

Scattered along selected storefronts, Windowbots are Twitter powered, interactive robot photo booths. Does this even need further explanation? Ok then. Free to use, passers by send a tweet to the ‘bot, which displays a suggested pose to strike. One the photo’s taken, the ‘bot sends it to your Twitter feed, hash-tagged to compare with other people’s poses in an online gallery. It then eats your soul. (SH)

The dotBrighton Games Jam Skiff Fri 21st – Sun 23rd

A free weekend of game creation down at The Skiff on Gloucester Road. Participants are given 48 hours, working alone or in teams, to design a new game on a given theme. A background in video gaming isn’t a necessity, as any form of game (board, card, playground) is welcome, so if you’re feeling creative, book a place and get involved. The weekend finishes with everyone having a go at playing one another’s creations, with prizes for the best. (SH)

0-1

Nightingale Theatre Thurs 27th

A launch event for an iPhone app, bridging the ether from your mobile device to the world of the deities. The 0-1 app sounds just like the sort of technological advance to bend fragile minds, as, according to its developers, “0-1 will claim the iPhone as its humangodbot interface, peeling back the flesh-machine divide to speak with your digital soul.” On the other hand, wine and cakes will be available, so it’s not all apocalyptic techno-doom. PLAYGROUP FESTIVAL Words By Stuart Huggett, James Kendall, Jessica Marshall McHattie

anneka

Blah Blah Blah

It’s been a hell of a year for Playgroup. The party providers have turned The Blind Tiger into Brighton’s best café/pub/live venue/club and had a great response to the success of last year’s Playgroup Festival. There’s only been one slight snag, and that’s that the relentless pissing rain that we call summer meant the people who look after the beautiful festival site wouldn’t let us party on it cos it was sodden. Well now it’s had a chance to dry out everything is ready to go, which is great news because there’s no better way to end the summer than with a weekend at Playgroup.

The best clubbing is all about going out as a gang, so it makes sense that perhaps Brighton’s best dance music promoters are a proper gang themselves. Former SOURCE cover stars, the Blah Blah Blah quartet of DJs, designers, bloggers, label heads and more control every part of what they do – no detail is left unchecked. Currently playing a wider mix of party based house music than at any time in their five and a half year history, if you stay long enough you might even hear ‘Red Red Wine’. (JK)

Stepping things up last year, they hit on a perfect balance between intimate party vibes and bundles of entertainment. The line-up is better than ever – loads of local heroes and some interesting names from further afield – but you could take the music away and still have a great time.

The Correspondents

As well as the best fancy dress costumes in the land (this time with a lost toy theme), there are hundreds of other esoteric performers to keep you entertained. We were dancing last year when the tent suddenly filled with busty owls in Hooters t-shirts. Be prepared to come home from the weekend of Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd with some tales. Turn it up! Bring the toys!

Recent guests on Mumford And Sons’ Gentlemen Of The Road package tour, perennial Playgroup favourites The Correspondents’ mix of swing and breaks is subtly making them one of the country’s favourite underground festival acts. They may have the names of errant children’s entertainers, but Mr Bruce and Mr Chuckles are adept at whipping up a crowd’s energy without the aid of sugar, tartrazine or balloons. Chucking ragtime, scat and jazz into the mix, their daft dance music will make your party peak. (SH)

Anchorsong

Definitely one of Tru Thoughts’ most exciting recent signings, Anchorsong is a Japanese producer with a penchant for subtle, warm and slowbuilding electronica. Last month’s single release ‘Darkrum’ was highly praised, but his live shows are where it all comes together. Using instruments and sampling them live, creating loops and soundscapes, and singing in a surprisingly harmonious voice, Anchorsong’s set is one to prioritise. (JMM)

DJ Format

Format’s 2011 set at Playgroup was one of the best received of the whole festival, so it’d be foolish to miss this year’s installment. Effortlessly crossing genre boundaries from hip hop to funk to soul, via the occasional rock or indie snippet, Format mixes so smoothly that all you can do is marvel. Latest album ‘Statement Of Intent’ was released earlier this year and proves that his lust for crate digging is still as strong as ever. (JMM)

Anneka

Initially a promising vocalist heard on tracks by Starkey, Ital Tek and others, Brighton’s Anneka has progressed into a stunning multi-instrumentalist whose live sets have been impressing club crowds for months. If you haven’t had the opportunity to see her craft her haunting songs yet, don’t miss this opportunity – she’s comparable to a young PJ Harvey or Imogen Heap, and her latest tracks are her best yet. (JMM)

The Qemists

DJ Yoda

So many bands make great claims of their own originality, but really, there’s no other act around quite like Gaggle. The invention of composer Deborah Coughlin, formerly of discopunk outfit 586, Gaggle are a 22-piece (or thereabouts) female choir with a unique approach to sound and image. On their Transgressive debut ‘From The Mouth Of A Cave’, the group combine their full throated chanting with pounding rhythms to bizarre effect. They’ll need a field of their own to camp in. (SH)

Centred on the duo of Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba, The Herbaliser broke through in the 90s with a series of jazz influenced, instrumental hip hop albums for Ninja Tune. Numerous collaborations and soundtracks later, The Herbaliser are now gearing up for the release of new album ‘There Were Seven’ on their own Department H label. Their Playgroup appearance takes the form of a two hour DJ set, sure to be packed with the choicest hip hop tracks. (SH)

Treading the line between drum’n’bass and rock in an authentic way that Pendulum never managed, Brighton trio The Qemists have spent much of the three years since being on the SOURCE cover travelling the world playing to huge crowds, as well as popping up on the soundtrack to every videogame you’ve played recently. They’ll blow your head off live and promise to be the most aggressively intense band on the bill. (JK)

Page 44

Summer smashes often come out of nowhere, and this is what’s happened with Sam & The Womp’s instantly recognisable ‘Bom Bom’. The daft club cabaret track has won over Radio One and secured much props from Rizzle Kicks. By the time their Playgroup slot arrives, it could be number one all over Europe, or already played-out. In the meantime, all together now, “I’m the cat with the bass and drum, goin’ around like Bom Bom Bom!” Inescapable. (SH)

It’s too easy to use food metaphors here: the Soul Casserole crew cook up something special; they know how to mix the freshest and the tastiest tunes from the past 50 years; they cater for all tastes... OK, we’ll stop now. The three DJs behind Soul Casserole love soul music, but they also love reggae, ragga, blues and hip hop. They have the same enthusiasm for Aretha Franklin and Luther Vandross as they do for modern tracks, and they know how to throw a very good party. (JMM)

Master of the cut up, DJ Yoda has successfully walked the line between credible turntablism and comedy populism ever since the crossover success of his first major mixtape, ‘How To Cut And Paste Vol. 1’. Well over a dozen volumes later, Yoda’s still mixing up musical history: his latest track, ‘Happy’, is an uplifting collaboration with Boy George. For Playgroup, Yoda presents an audio-visual set, so expect some rapidfire picture editing to match his swift deck skills. (SH)

Over The Moon Festival Words By Stuart Huggett

Timed to coincide with the autumn equinox, Over The Moon also presents one of the last chances to enjoy the outdoor festival season, as the nights finally start drawing in. In the lineage of the original 60s/70s festival movement, the weekend mixes live music with talks on all things ecological and spiritual, with plenty of hands-on workshops and family events for all ages to get stuck into. Here’s our pick of the weekend’s sounds.

Carnival Collective

Quite simply the biggest band in Brighton, if you’re going by sheer number of musicians on stage at any rate (usually around 35, but sometimes more). Actually, Carnival Collective could stake a good claim for most popular too, such is the all-embracing joy of their ever mutating hybrid of funk, ska, drum’n’bass, samba and the kitchen sink. Mathematicians have proved that if you’ve not seen Carnival Collective live so far, it’s only because you’re in them.

Dub Pistols

Barry Ashworth’s Dub Pistols rose up in the 90s big beat rush, bringing a broad interest in dub, reggae and hip hop to their music. There’s still a geezerish swagger to a lot of Dub Pistols music (check their version of The Stranglers’ ‘Peaches’, with recurring collaborators Terry Hall and Rodney P), and they’ve remained a perennially popular live draw. This is bound to be an energetic one.

Eat Static/Zubzub

Linked by their roots in Somerset’s free festival spacerock survivors Ozric Tentacles, Eat Static and Zubzub both explore the zones between electronic dance and psychedelic

Page 46

dub pistols

music. Now down to founder member Merv Pepler and collaborators, Eat Static were synonymous with the 90s Club Dog scene, with over 20 years of diverse trance explorations to their name. Ex-Ozrics bassist Zia Geelani’s Zubzub ladle extra live instrumentation into their psychedelic soup.

H2dr0p

If you’ve ever been distracted from finishing the washing up by the liquid chimes of the pans in the bowl, you’ll know where this act is coming from. Developed by Portuguese percussionist Nuno Brito, H2dr0p explores the resonant properties of water in contact with pots, pans and bowls, using loops and digital processing to create blooping, gulping symphonies. You might want to make sure you’ve, um, ‘gone’ before you go though.

Los Albertos

The archetypal Brighton band, Los Albertos combine Two-Tone ska-punk with bursts of dub, funk and cheery, self-deprecating humour. Seemingly forever on the verge of jacking the whole thing in, Los Albertos keep on coming back for more, and for that we’re always pleased. If they ever do split, it’ll be like the ravens leaving the Tower. Oh, and they may like a drink. Resistance is futile.

Transformer

SOURCE have been supporters of electro punk-funk outfit Transformer for the past few years, from their early A Certain Ratio influenced party starting, through to the release of their excellent single ‘Cinema Car’ (which landed them in The Inbetweeners and currently soundtracks a new C4 comedy). The current, stripped back line up still kill it live, with a full set of irresistible electronic tracks in their arsenal.

STREET STYLE

Words by hayley simpson photos by lomokev – lomokev.com/style

Breezing through Brighton in all his sartorial splendour you’d think this guy was a rock star by day and an urban fashion super hero by night, ridding the world of drab and dreary clothing. But dressing like this is what Jaimes, a freelance stylist and fashion design student, needs to do to make his mark and get noticed in his career. “There are so many up and coming designers,” he says, “I need to have something that makes people remember me.” So is it just a clever, career-ladder climbing plan or is there more to what he calls his “in your face” look? “I’ve been on the street before and heard people gasp,” he says, “I like that whole shock factor – whether it be good or bad I do like the attention.” Sunglasses from Beyond Retro “I don’t ever wear black – except on sunglasses, belts or maybe a pair of shoes.” Jacket from Rokit “I don’t really like to wear things that I’ll see other people in. That’s my whole angle – that individuality and that unique-ness. I’d rather go to vintage shops, charity shops or car boot sales and pick up things that are one of a kind.” Shirt from Brick Lane “This is an Aztec ikat print. The patterns carved on walls and prints they used to wear would differentiate between the different Aztec tribes. I like knowing the cultural aspect behind clothes that people wouldn’t normally know.” Goofy vest from Primark “I paid 2 pounds for this! Not everything I buy has to be from a vintage shop or from a designer.” Jeans DIY “They were hot pink before and I stripped them down using bleach. As a stylist and designer I think it’s important to customise and it’s good to change things up. I think there is always something you can change about an item of clothing.” Trainers from Dr Martens “These have a creeper sole on them so they almost look like an orthopaedic shoe. They are really weird but I love them. I try to keep them clean by bleaching them but I think I’m going to spray them gold or silver next.”

Bubbletastic! Unsung Hero

100 PEOPLE WHO MAKE BRIGHTON WHAT IT IS No.33 David Bramwell WORDS BY STUART HUGGETT Dr David Bramwell’s lengthy CV includes creating the Cheeky Guides book series, hosting The Catalyst Club at Latest MusicBar and fronting the haunted folk orchestra Oddfellow’s Casino. He’s organising the annual Brighton Zocalo street events on Thurs 9th. What is a Zocalo? Zocalo is a Mexican word, like piazza or plaza, referring to the spaces in a city where people naturally congregate. On one day of the year we all take a chair and sit outside our houses as a way of saying, I’m a friendly neighbour, come and have a chat. We get to know the people we live next door to and rekindle a sense of community.

The Bubble Tea phenomenon has reached the shores of Brighton. From a refreshing passion fruit green tea to smooth mango milk tea…we have the perfect Bubble Tea for you. Pop into our North Laine store to find out more about this delicious craze! Find us Here

www.pearlsbrighton.com

How can people get involved? Visit our website brightonzocalo.com, download the poster, stick it in your window and promise to take part on the day. The beauty of the Zocalo is that it requires no fund-raising, red tape or council approval, and is mercifully free of Union Jack bunting. How are the Cheeky Guides doing? This year’s Cheeky Walks book managed to creep into the top ten local paperbacks in Waterstones, which we were very happy about. Each walk is themed, ranging from art and sex to Lord Lucan and Katie Price. The Katie Price one is a bit tongue in cheek, but it’s still a lovely ramble. No-one’s going to be buying a yacht from the profits. Or even a model of a yacht for that matter.

SOURCE’ S BESt fRy-Up!

What are Oddfellow’s Casino up to? The next album is about halfway recorded. We’ve just released a single, ‘We Will Be Here’ with a video filmed in Margate’s Shell Grotto and the house of an artist in Ramsgate who only paints “bird nightmares”. The song is an anthem for the dead. Cheery stuff, as always. I’ve recently been recording some covers of Brighton bands I love, including Grasscut, Clearlake and Chimp. It’s an excuse to dabble with more upbeat electro-pop, a guilty pleasure that doesn’t quite gel musically with Oddfellow’s more melancholic, orchestrated pop. Any other projects in the pipeline? I’m a man who can’t sit still. I’m not sure if it’s a blessing or a curse. I’m currently working on a brand new project called a quiet night in with a Horlicks and a good book.

SECRET EATER

La Choza 36 Gloucester Road (01273) 945 926 Tues-Weds 11:30am-6pm, Thurs-Sat 11:30am-9:30pm, Sun 11:30am-4:30pm THE PLACE You wait years for a Mexican street food joint and then two come along at once (although Carlos Burrito has now left the Wood Store to go on the festival circuit). Despite La Choza only being open a couple months it’s the talk of the town. And even without eating there it’s easy to see why. They have a simple menu where you choose between burritos, tacos, quesadillas and tostadas before picking a filling and a sauce. All the options weigh in at just over a fiver and you can eat in, grab a table outside or take your food away.

THE MEAL We pop in for lunch because it’s quick and easy and we know we’ll get a table without too much trouble. Knowing how big the burritos are we opt for one filled with BBQ Shack’s legendary pulled pork (£6), topped with habanero sauce. It’s huge, with lots of textures and flavours merging nicely: the zingy hot sauce, the slow-cooked pork, sour cream and refried beans filled out with rice. The soft tacos are piled with slow cooked spicy beef (£5.50) and topped with green salsa, all fresh with salad – not rubbery or unhealthy like bad Mexican food can be. Perhaps it’s greedy to have nachos (£4.50) too, but they’re loaded with cheese, jalapeños, sour cream, guacamole and refried beans and we can’t resist. They’re a meal on their own. The curros (£3.85) are an interesting and delicious crispy take on donuts with a gooey choc-caramel sauce. We don’t eat anything for the rest of the day and that’s on just a £10 a head spend. THE VERDICT Like the rest of Brighton we love this place. Even though they’ve only been open a couple of months, that shows they’ve come firing out of the gates. Great food, incredible value, big portions, jolly atmosphere, plus margaritas – what’s not to like? WERE WE SUSSED? Well, we’re in there all the time, and they know we’re from SOURCE as our office is on the same road, but we don’t think they knew we were reviewing the food today.

This Italian Ice Cream shop with a twist has a daily choice of 24 ever changing flavours, taken from their growing list of more than 250. Ranging from Vanilla to Violet, Mango to Mojito and Apple to Avocado all are made fresh on the premises using locally produced milk and cream. For vegans, Boho Gelato always stock at least 4 non dairy flavours and their Gelato is served all year round in cones, cups or takeaway boxes. Fresh cooked waffles, brownies and coffee are also available. They were recently included in Rose Prince’s “The Good Produce Guide 2011” as one of the best ice cream shops in the UK.

IN CONVERSATION WITH

BUNTY

Multicoloured Pop ARTIST PLAYS source’s digital festival SHOW words by stuart huggett Musician and visual artist Bunty, aka Kassia Zermon, is a member of Brighton’s Beatabet collective, “a coalition of musicians, sound artists, performers, film makers, dancers and theatre makers who run their own label and put on fun multi-discipline events without the wank.” She launches the first instalment of her multimedia album ‘Multimos’ at SOURCE New Music’s Beatabet Takeover this month. You go pretty off-piste – what’s your musical background? I’ve always sung, then I started recording lots of sounds onto minidiscs, and performed improvised gigs with a beatboxer and just two mics for a while. I studied music and visual art in Brighton, which opened my ears to all sorts of electronic, African, Japanese, minimalisto mayhem. How did you get involved with Beatabet? I met the Beatabet people six years ago when my mate Dave called me from our first creative residency in France. He was saying, “You’ve gotta come out Kas, there’s loads of tunes that need vocals. There’s also NO girls here!” Then it progressively turned into Beatabet as it is now. Why release ‘Multimos’ in instalments? It began with the seed of an idea and then grew this way, into an album in seven parts. It all became about numbers and colours, ending up with the number seven and the colour spectrum. All of the parts are linked. Each part is a ‘Mos’ and ‘Multimos’ is the whole.

being too precious. It’s like a game, guerrilla style: Twitter, Audioboo, Facebook, YouTube, blogs. There will be a very physical package and show as part of MOS 7, the final part. What can you tell us about the ‘Multimos’ characters? King Zacky is a multiple-headed, faceless being, but we can hear him speak. His heads have collaborated with the music, film and design so far. The Third Party Force are the audience and listeners. For now, please upload your most terrifying face to my website, there is an entire page dedicated to you! How else can people get involved? I’m developing the website to be able to collect audio to integrate into live shows, performed both online and at gigs. I also collected noises from the people in the street to use in August’s Undercurrent Weekend in Shoreham. I’m thinking up new ways of involvement all the time, but can’t give them away – that’s not as fun. What other projects are you involved with? I help run the Beatabet label, and we put on festivals and events together. I run ridiculous, and sometimes violent, beatsynth keep fit classes with Poppy Kaye, called Fitness Focus; sing and play percussion in a trio called Le Juki; and get performances together for events like Rock Gods (lots of simultaneous guitar solos turned up high) amongst all the other throwaway activities that occur.

What can we expect from your SOURCE New Music What are you planning for the multimedia components? performance? It’s being made up as I go along. The music is not yet Beats, bears, lullaby machines, dancing girls, interactive recorded, the films and apps have visuals from the mighty metaLuna and not yet been made, the characters much, much more. It’s part of Brighton are growing all the time. It’s intense Digital Festival. I’m especially looking Where: Brighton Dome, Pavilion Theatre because the release dates are every forward to Pixel Pyros’ digital fireworks When: Thurs 20th eight weeks. There’s no escaping it, display on Jubilee Library (Sun 2nd). Web: buntyvoid.com/multimos only going deeper. SIX OF THE BEST

ELECTRONIC PIONEERS

Words By Joel Dawes, Stuart Huggett, James Kendall

Fuck EDM. As anyone who was “largin’ it” in the 90s knows it’s simply called dance music. But electronic music goes back even further than that. David Guetta might not have much in common with Stockhausen, but without the likes of The Human League, Juan Atkins, Goldie and Depeche Mode he’d be strumming a guitar. So to tie in with this month’s Digital Festival here’s our pick of the artists who paved the way to Skrillex.

Kraftwerk

‘Autobahn’

This 1974 hymn to the German motorway system is still an incredible electronic achievement. Taking up the first side of Kraftwerk’s fourth album, ‘Autobahn’ opens with the sound of a car starting and a vocoder-treated voice intoning the title, before taking the listener out on a picturesque sonic drive. Beyond the timeless melody and simple lyrics (Kraftwerk’s first), it’s the tiny details that enthral: the Doppler effect synth passes, the tape-twisting spin through the radio dial. Intelligent, influential, beautiful. (SH)

Giorgio

‘From Here To Eternity’

The groundbreaking electronic pulse of Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’ was an international smash, and stands alone from the rest of Giorgio Moroder’s classic disco productions for the diva. Giorgio was already an established, sometimes cheesy pop star in his own right on the continent, with ‘From Here To Eternity’ hitting the UK top 20 in autumn 1977, a couple of months after Summer’s no.1. Unjustly forgotten, ‘From Here To Eternity’ is a pocket symphony of analogue wonder – all of techno lies within. (SH)

New Order

‘Video 586’

Recorded to accompany the opening of The Hacienda club in 1982, this relentless, churning instrumental found New Order indulging in their love of electronic hardware for over 20 hypnotic minutes. Their heads-down investigation into the outer limits of sequencing, although undeniably self-indulgent, was soon whittled down into song form as ‘586’, the track that begat the giant dance-rock crossover of ‘Blue Monday’. Long available only in piecemeal, cassette form, it was 15 years before ‘Video 586’ was finally released in full. (SH)

jamie principle

Jamie Principle

‘Your Love’

You probably know this song as The Source Featuring Candi Staton’s ‘You Got The Love’ (which slotted an old disco vocal on top), or even under Frankie Knuckles’ name, which frequently happened with Principle’s records. But apart from Knuckles tightening up the drums, Jamie invented house music as we know it on this home recording. Jesse Saunders’ sketchy, gimmicky ‘On & On’ might get the chronological props, but ‘Your Love’ is the first fully formed house record that you could still play out. Deep, sensual dance music you could get lost in. (JK)

Orbital

‘Impact’

They might not have gone to school with the Belleville Three (what on earth were they teaching in the classes that Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin ‘Inner City’ Saunderson attended?) but the Hartnolls took techno to the stadiums. They were the first rave band to be able to perform live and keep people interested. How bad “club PAs” (as in personal appearances) were cannot be measured, so for Orbital to take on Glastonbury in 1994 and be crowned the band of the festival legitimised dance music. ‘Impact’’s big melodic riffs and distorted crescendo brought on a new era, and even rock and indie fans got on one. (JK)

Aphex Twin

‘Windowlicker’

The glitchy drums and almost unlistenably distorted last minute of Aphex Twin’s ‘Windowlicker’ should have consigned it to the record collections of just a few muso geeks. Instead its weird yet incredibly catchy hooks found a place in the hearts and heads of listeners everywhere. A UK top 20 hit, ‘Windowlicker’ helped bring experimental music in the mainstream. Cited as a major influence by the equally loved and hated Skrillex, Aphex Twin may be more important in his rise to Grammywinning fame than he might realise. (JD)
