Joining a society is a great way to meet like-minded students, make new friends, gain invaluable experience and share knowledge. Get involved Societies are offered many training opportunities throughout the year including website training, team-building & event planning. As you get more involved with a society, you might want to think about putting yourself forward for one of the leadership roles. Societies on Campus Eastbourne offers a range of active student societies from academic and cultural to leisure and faith-based groups. Students are also welcome to join societies based in Brighton and Hastings. If you can’t find a society that you are interested in then why not set up your own!? The Chelsea Society is one of the most popular societies on campus. They are a group of student volunteers who work on a range of community engagement activities led by the School of Sport & Service Management (SASM). Dance Rivals is a highlight of the Eastbourne calendar and is run by The Chelsea Society, where sports teams perform a dance to raise money.
Midwifery Society The Midwifery Society is an academic society who spread knowledge and information about pregnancy and birth. The society is open to midwives, student midwives and prospective student midwives. They put on great events including film screenings, antenatal groups and Q+A sessions. They also won Society of the Year at our Union Awards.
International Students Society (ISS)
ISS’ aim is to give international students a support system and a space to socialise when they arrive at university. The society also promotes and provides opportunities to learn about new cultures, the society is open to everyone!

Sport Brighton is the University of Brighton’s sports service, run by the university in close partnership with Brighton Students’ Union. Services range from facilities on campus (Eastbourne Hillbrow Sports Centre) to a number of sports programmes. Getting involved in sports while at university is a great way to meet new people and keep fit & healthy. There are 3 main sports programmes delivered by Sport Brighton at the uni which are all a great way to meet new people whilst keeping fit & healthy: 1. Gym & sports facilities including fitness classes 2. Sports Federation clubs 3. Parklife (see overleaf) Sport Brighton offers a number of fitness classes each week at Hillbrow Sports Centre. A fitness class programme is delivered throughout the week at sports centre. The latest timetables can be found via the Sport Brighton website or at any sports centre reception. Sports Federation clubs are run by students for students and offer both competitive and non-competitive sporting opportunities. This gives you the chance to join a club as well as clubs that simply offer a chance to undertake a new challenge or to re-ignite old sporting interest with like-minded students. During welcome week, Sport Brighton and Sports Federation club reps will be at Freshers’ Fairs in Eastbourne. Co-ops & Collectives Brighton Students’ Union has a growing number of student collectives and cooperatives. Like societies, the groups are run primarily by student volunteers but the services and activities they offer benefit the wider student community across all campuses. Health & Wellbeing The Health and Wellbeing of our members (that’s you!) is central to the work of Brighton Students’ Union, and we run two health and wellbeing projects: CaSH (Contraception and Sexual Health) and PEACH (Peer Education & Advice for Campus Health).
How to get involved:
What is CaSH? The CaSH Action Team is peer-led and aims to ensure that our students are aware of and have access to sexual health services and advice. We believe sexual health education should be progressive, comprehensive and inclusive.
All students involved with CaSH and PEACH receive full training and induction into the role, as well as ongoing support and development.
What is PEACH? The PEACH team aims are to promote positive mental health and wellbeing and to reduce the incidence and prevalence of drug and alcohol related harm among our student population.

Sex, drugs and alcohol during freshers’ University is all about having fun and having new experiences, at times this may involve alcohol and may include sex, although it doesn’t need to – everyone is different! It’s good to be prepared and always carry a condom or Femidom, just in case you want to have sex, or a friend asks for one. It can be easy to get swept up in the moment, but thinking about barrier methods (condoms, Femidoms, dams) and contraception before you go out makes it more likely you’ll use them and have safer sex. If you do have sex, or engage in sexual acts make sure you think about consent and remember that it is active, enthusiastic, on-going and retractable, not under the influence, pressured or assumed. Sometimes, despite best intentions things don’t go to plan, so knowing where you can access emergency contraception and PEP (if you think you have been exposed to HIV) as quickly as possible is important, especially if you’re new in town. The social side of freshers’ and university life can often be associated with alcohol and the misperception that you need to drink to have fun. Some people will, and some people won’t drink and that’s perfectly okay. It is important to take care when you are out socialising, be aware of your limits & the dangers associated with drugs and alcohol. If you do choose to drink and/ or take drugs we want you to think about your safety, and make educated & informed decisions about doing so. Democracy & Campaigns Brighton Students’ Union is a student-led democratic organisation; this means we work on the issues that affect you! The union is run by five full-time officers who represent the entire student body to the university, in the local community and nationally. We also have many volunteer elected officers who campaign and run events for students across all campuses. There are lots of ways you can get involved in democracy and campaigns within the students’ union, and make a real difference in your academic lives! Student Forum Student Forum is an open meeting held every month for students to come and discuss the work of the union. You will get updates on all of the key projects that we are working on and be able to influence the direction of the union. It is also an opportunity for you to meet and question the five full-time officers that lead the union. Campus Action Teams Each campus has a Campus Action Team who help to run events and campaigns relevant to each campus. Campus Action Team meetings are open to any student to come along and get involved.
NUS Conferences Brighton Students’ Union is a member of the National Union of Students (NUS) and each year we send delegates to their conferences. Students’ Union Leadership Elections The Students’ Union Leadership Elections are held every year in the Spring Term. If you would like to run the students’ union and become one of the five full-time officers or a volunteer officer alongside your studies, nominate yourself in January.

Course Reps
Each year of every course at the University of Brighton has a Course Rep. It is a great role to take on, and one where you know you will be helping to ensure that you and your peers have the best possible academic experience whilst at university.
What do Course Reps do? Course Reps are an essential link between students and staff, enabling student feedback to be heard and acted upon. By talking to their fellow students and gathering feedback, Course Reps find out what is working well on their course and any areas that could be improved upon. They will represent the students’ viewpoint in discussions and meetings with staff and keep their fellow students up-to-date with what’s going on. “It was an interesting role to undertake and I would love to do it again in the future.” Course Rep 2016-17 School of Education
How to become a Course Rep? If you are interested in becoming a Course Rep, let your course mates and course leader know at the beginning of term when the role is discussed. An informal election is held for the position and is shared between multiple students on larger courses.

Gain confidence- Through speaking to students and staff, attending meetings and knowing that you have made a difference.

Rep of the Month is awarded to Course or School Academic Reps who have improved the learning experience on their course or in their school. Reps are nominated for a variety of reasons; some do the basics of the role really well and consistently support students on their course. We are able to support you through the complaints procedure, offering help, understanding the guidance, accompanying you to meetings and ensuring you are treated fairly throughout the process. We can also advise on the evidence that will support your application. We can offer advice on when it is appropriate to appeal a decision on your results as well as guidance on the correct actions to take, the correct grounds for an appeal and identifying suitable evidence. If you’re accused of academic misconduct we can help by looking through your work, recognising the source of the allegation, help to prepare you by discussing your options, potential outcomes as well as accompanying you to any meetings. We offer help and information on a wide range of problems affecting students’ lives, so if you have problems that you can’t deal with on your own, book an appointment with US (Union Support).
