Societies We have 100+ societies, and all are completely student-led and cover a huge range of interests, from academic and cultural to leisure and faith. Joining a society is a great way to meet like-minded students, make new friends, gain invaluable experience and share knowledge. Involvement with societies is where many students will have the best experiences of their university lives. Whatever your interests, there is a society for you!

“Joining a society was the best thing I did while at university, I met some of my best friends there”

How to join Come to our Freshers’ Fair during your first week at University of Brighton. Here you will be able to meet the societies, find out what they get up to and how to sign up. Or you can join via our website throughout the year: brightonsu.com/societies.

Can’t find the society you like? You can create your own society if there isn’t one that matches your interest. The SU will support you all the way with advice, funding and training. You just need three people to start with and submit the society proposal to us.

“Starting a society was simple and easy thanks to the support from Brighton SU”

Get involved Societies are offered many training opportunities throughout the year including website training, team-building & event planning. As you get more involved with a society, you might want to think about putting yourself forward for one of the leadership roles. Each group will have positions available such as President, Treasurer and Secretary. Even if you don’t stand for a committee member role, you can still get involved with your society by helping organise social events or fundraisers.

Societies on Campus Eastbourne offers a range of active student societies from academic and cultural to leisure and faith-based groups. Students are also welcome to join societies based in Brighton and Hastings. If you can’t find a society that you are interested in then why not set up your own!? You can find out more about societies and join any society at Freshers’ Fairs in September or Refreshers in February where you’ll have an opportunity to meet and talk directly to student society members. You can also join any society online at any time during the year by visiting the societies page on the union website at brightonsu.com/societies..

Here are some examples of Eastbourne-based societies: The Chelsea Society

The Chelsea Society is one of the most popular societies on campus. They are a group of student volunteers who work on a range of community engagement activities led by the School of Sport & Service Management (SASM). Dance Rivals is a highlight of the Eastbourne calendar and is run by The Chelsea Society, where sports teams perform a dance to raise money.

Midwifery Society The Midwifery Society is an academic society who spread knowledge and information about pregnancy and birth. The society is open to midwives, student midwives and prospective student midwives. They put on great events including film screenings, antenatal groups and Q+A sessions. They also won Society of the Year at our Union Awards.

International Students Society (ISS)

ISS’ aim is to give international students a support system and a space to socialise when they arrive at university. The society also promotes and provides opportunities to learn about new cultures, the society is open to everyone!

Sport Brighton is the University of Brighton’s sports service, run by the university in close partnership with Brighton Students’ Union. Services range from facilities on campus (Eastbourne Hillbrow Sports Centre) to a number of sports programmes. Getting involved in sports while at university is a great way to meet new people and keep fit & healthy. There are 3 main sports programmes delivered by Sport Brighton at the uni which are all a great way to meet new people whilst keeping fit & healthy: 1. Gym & sports facilities including fitness classes 2. Sports Federation clubs 3. Parklife (see overleaf) Sport Brighton offers a number of fitness classes each week at Hillbrow Sports Centre. A fitness class programme is delivered throughout the week at sports centre. The latest timetables can be found via the Sport Brighton website or at any sports centre reception. Sports Federation clubs are run by students for students and offer both competitive and non-competitive sporting opportunities. This gives you the chance to join a club as well as clubs that simply offer a chance to undertake a new challenge or to re-ignite old sporting interest with like-minded students. During welcome week, Sport Brighton and Sports Federation club reps will be at Freshers’ Fairs in Eastbourne. Alternatively, contact Sport Brighton site reception, follow Sport Brighton on social media or visit their website.

Student Media Brighton Students’ Union supports three main media outlets; The Verse online newspaper, Buzz Radio and Brighton TV. These outlets are run by students, for students, across all of the University of Brighton campuses and they exist to give a voice to students on topics they care about. Anyone can get involved in student media! Have you always dreamed of writing an article for a newspaper, hosting your own radio show or directing your own video shoot? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then come and say ‘Hi’ at our Freshers’ Fair stand or get in touch via social media.

Co-ops & Collectives Brighton Students’ Union has a growing number of student collectives and cooperatives. Like societies, the groups are run primarily by student volunteers but the services and activities they offer benefit the wider student community across all campuses. Co-op and collective membership provides valuable enterprising and employment experiences and exciting social opportunities. The groups offer students opportunities to create sustainable activities and skills for the benefit of the wider student community, whether through bike hire and repair, providing low cost seasonal fruit and veg boxes, filming events with Brighton TV or designing for Brighton Design Collective. Co-op and collective activity is hands on and open to everyone.

Brighton SU Co-ops & Collectives Brighton Design Collective A campus-based student design collective offering cost effective design solutions to the student & university community. Here at the Students’ Union we love involving students in everything we do From our Course Reps representing all students with your academic issues to your Volunteer Officers ensuring your student voice is heard, we have plenty of opportunities throughout the year for you to get involved! You can also get involved with our student activities and lead a society, or start writing for our student online newspaper, even become a member of our Campus Action Teams and put your campus on the map.

Look out for students and staff wearing teal Brighton Students’ Union t-shirts and come and say hello; we’d love to meet you. brightonsu.com/volunteering

Health & Wellbeing The Health and Wellbeing of our members (that’s you!) is central to the work of Brighton Students’ Union, and we run two health and wellbeing projects: CaSH (Contraception and Sexual Health) and PEACH (Peer Education & Advice for Campus Health).

How to get involved:

What is CaSH? The CaSH Action Team is peer-led and aims to ensure that our students are aware of and have access to sexual health services and advice. We believe sexual health education should be progressive, comprehensive and inclusive.

All students involved with CaSH and PEACH receive full training and induction into the role, as well as ongoing support and development.

What is PEACH? The PEACH team aims are to promote positive mental health and wellbeing and to reduce the incidence and prevalence of drug and alcohol related harm among our student population.

You can find out more about CaSH, PEACH, volunteering and working with us from our website: brightonsu.com/cash brightonsu.com/volunteerwithpeach

These projects deliver their aims through free campus based drop-ins, outreach, campaign work and activism. We are friendly and non-judgemental and we are creative and fun in our approach to peer-led education.

You can volunteer with either CaSH for sexual health campaigns or PEACH for drugs, alcohol and mental health, or even both! As well as volunteers, we also have some paid work opportunities.

Apply to join the team by sending us an application form telling us why you would be great.

Why become a volunteer? • Contribute to the SU community • Make a difference • Gain experience in health promotion • Meet new people • Be an activist

Find out more: For more information about our CaSH & PEACH services on campus or to find out about volunteering, visit brightonsu.com/goodadvice. You can also like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter: Contraception and Sexual Health Action-Team

Sex, drugs and alcohol during freshers’ University is all about having fun and having new experiences, at times this may involve alcohol and may include sex, although it doesn’t need to – everyone is different! It’s good to be prepared and always carry a condom or Femidom, just in case you want to have sex, or a friend asks for one. It can be easy to get swept up in the moment, but thinking about barrier methods (condoms, Femidoms, dams) and contraception before you go out makes it more likely you’ll use them and have safer sex. If you do have sex, or engage in sexual acts make sure you think about consent and remember that it is active, enthusiastic, on-going and retractable, not under the influence, pressured or assumed. Sometimes, despite best intentions things don’t go to plan, so knowing where you can access emergency contraception and PEP (if you think you have been exposed to HIV) as quickly as possible is important, especially if you’re new in town. You can find information about PEP, emergency contraception and free barrier methods on our website: brightonsu.com/cash, along with information about screening for STI’s, contraception and consent. The social side of freshers’ and university life can often be associated with alcohol and the misperception that you need to drink to have fun. Some people will, and some people won’t drink and that’s perfectly okay. It is important to take care when you are out socialising, be aware of your limits & the dangers associated with drugs and alcohol. If you do choose to drink and/ or take drugs we want you to think about your safety, and make educated & informed decisions about doing so. For more information about alcohol, drugs and safety, visit: brightonsu.com/alcoholanddrugs

Democracy & Campaigns Brighton Students’ Union is a student-led democratic organisation; this means we work on the issues that affect you! The union is run by five full-time officers who represent the entire student body to the university, in the local community and nationally. We also have many volunteer elected officers who campaign and run events for students across all campuses. There are lots of ways you can get involved in democracy and campaigns within the students’ union, and make a real difference in your academic lives! Student Forum Student Forum is an open meeting held every month for students to come and discuss the work of the union. You will get updates on all of the key projects that we are working on and be able to influence the direction of the union. It is also an opportunity for you to meet and question the five full-time officers that lead the union. Campus Action Teams Each campus has a Campus Action Team who help to run events and campaigns relevant to each campus. Campus Action Team meetings are open to any student to come along and get involved.

NUS Conferences Brighton Students’ Union is a member of the National Union of Students (NUS) and each year we send delegates to their conferences. These delegate positions are open to all students who identify as a member of the specific group. Elections are held in the first term. Visit brightonsu.com/changethings for more details.

Students’ Union Leadership Elections The Students’ Union Leadership Elections are held every year in the Spring Term. If you would like to run the students’ union and become one of the five full-time officers or a volunteer officer alongside your studies, nominate yourself in January.

By standing for a position, you can make a real difference to the university experience by encouraging change.

Volunteer Officers During your time here you can become a volunteer officer. These officers represent specific communities within the student body. You’ll get the chance to run awareness events and campaigns that improve the lives of students. You can find out more about the officers here: brightonsu.com/studentofficers.

Course Reps

Each year of every course at the University of Brighton has a Course Rep. It is a great role to take on, and one where you know you will be helping to ensure that you and your peers have the best possible academic experience whilst at university.

What do Course Reps do? Course Reps are an essential link between students and staff, enabling student feedback to be heard and acted upon. By talking to their fellow students and gathering feedback, Course Reps find out what is working well on their course and any areas that could be improved upon. They will represent the students’ viewpoint in discussions and meetings with staff and keep their fellow students up-to-date with what’s going on. “It was an interesting role to undertake and I would love to do it again in the future.” Course Rep 2016-17 School of Education

How to become a Course Rep? If you are interested in becoming a Course Rep, let your course mates and course leader know at the beginning of term when the role is discussed. An informal election is held for the position and is shared between multiple students on larger courses.

“A great way of settling in to uni by getting yourself involved, not too much or time consuming and means you can talk to others.” Course Rep 2016-17 School of Environment and Technology

“Attending meetings with staff has given me lots of confidence for job interviews and it has been great to know I’ve helped students on my course.” Course Rep 2016-17 Brighton Business School

The Benefits Becoming a Course Rep is a great way to: Meet new people- You will quickly get to know your fellow students and staff. Make a difference- You will be ensuring that students’ views are heard and that they can contribute to improving the quality of your course. Develop skills- Communication, organisation, research and negotiation, to name just a few. Gain confidence- Through speaking to students and staff, attending meetings and knowing that you have made a difference.

Talk to your Course Rep If you don’t stand for the role, it is still important to know who your Course Rep is. Make sure you give them feedback on your course, whether things are good or could be improved, so that they can take it forward to course staff to make change.

“ unde You dev e rstan ding lop a be ru t your ns and g of how t ter he c et clo cour ou sema s tes a er to bot rse h nd y our t Cour utors se Re .” Scho ol of p 2016-1 7 Hum anitie s

Support If you are appointed, be sure to come along to the training session in your school and keep an eye on your emails for our Course Rep newsletter. There are lots of exciting things to get involved with as part of the role, including funding for projects and the opportunity to attend the national Course Rep Conference.

Find out more To find out more about the Course Reps, visit our website brightonsu.com/ coursereps or email any queries you have to coursereps@brighton.ac.uk.

Rep of the Month Shile Gbelee Winner of January’s Rep of the Month Course Rep for Law with Business

Rep of the Month is awarded to Course or School Academic Reps who have improved the learning experience on their course or in their school. Reps are nominated for a variety of reasons; some do the basics of the role really well and consistently support students on their course. Others really go the extra mile and achieve something really special and play a key role in improving the learning experience on their course. Reps can be nominated at brightonsu.com/coursereps.
