Congratulations! You’re a member of Brighton Students’ Union. Starting university can feel a bit daunting, but it’s such an exciting time and one you’ll remember for years to come. The Students’ Union is dedicated to ensuring that your time at university is the amazing, life changing experience that it should be, so don’t miss out.
Course Reps
Every year of every course at the University of Brighton has a Course Rep. It is a great role to take on, and one where you know you will be helping to ensure that you and the students you study with have the best possible academic experience while at university.
What do Course Reps do?
We are led by students and work solely for our student members to offer them opportunities to have fun, find a voice, be empowered and get involved in a whole range of activities. Getting involved in your Students’ Union will ensure that you make the most of your time as a student. We will enable both you and the university to connect and ensure that your views and your voice are heard.
Course Reps are an essential link between students and staff, enabling student feedback to be heard and acted on. By talking to their fellow students and gathering feedback, Course Reps find out what is working well on their course and any areas that could be improved upon. They then represent the students’ viewpoint in discussions and meetings with staff, and keep their fellow students up to date with what’s going on. ‘Having this role allowed me to be an active member of my university and hopefully changed things for the better’ Course Rep 2014-15 School of Environment & Technology

How to become a Course Rep? If you are interested in becoming a Course Rep, let your course mates and course leader know at the beginning of term when the role is discussed. There is usually an informal election held for the position, with the role being shared on larger courses.
‘I really enjoyed it as a first year student. Everyone on my course immediately knew who I was and it gave them a face to come to if they were a bit unsure or overwhelmed. It has certainly made me want to become more involved with the Students’ Union next year!’ Course Rep 2014-15 School of Art, Design and Media
‘It’s given me the opportunity to better understand the running of the course, mingle with my peers and better understand their problems. It’s very rewarding to play an active role in tackling issues that arise on the course’ Course Rep 2014-15 School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular

Services range from the activity zone on campus (Priory Square Basement) to a number of sports programmes. Getting involved in sports while at university is a great way to meet new people and keep fit and healthy.
There are two main sports programmes at the university: Sports Federation Clubs and Parklife. The Sports Federation Clubs are run by students for students. If your activity does not happen on campus then Sport Brighton can help to find you a local club, help you set up your own group or even offer travel subsidies to travel to other campuses so you can meet like-minded students. Parklife activities offer a recreational sports programme offering turn up and play sessions, lessons in new sports and internal sports leagues. This includes a swim for £1 offer at the local pool in Hastings as well as monthly sports events. Contraception and Sexual Health (CaSH) Action Team
Access to Students’ Union Events Hastings
Spring Term:
Varsity, AGM, election debates, Fat Tuesday, election results party
It’s important that you take responsibility for your sexual health and our CaSH Action Team can support you in doing just that. The team is a group of student volunteers, trained to deliver a professional, non-judgemental and friendly advice service to our members, that’s you!
Be Prepared:
We are funded by East Sussex County Council and run CaSH drop-ins on campus. We offer free condoms, pregnancy tests, Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea screening, along with all the information you need about safer sex and signposting to other local services who may be able to help. We also do outreach work, so you may see us around halls, on campus, at events or in local nightclubs. Make sure you come and say hello to us.
It can be easy to get swept up in the moment, but thinking about contraception before you go out makes it more likely you’ll be able to enjoy having safer sex. Sometimes, despite best intentions, things don’t go to plan, so knowing where you can access hormonal contraception, and PEP (if you think you have been exposed to HIV) as quickly as possible is important, especially if you’re new in town.
University is all about having fun and trying new experiences – at times this may involve alcohol and may include sex. It’s good to be prepared and always carry a condom or Femidom.
You can find this information on our website: brightonsu.com/cash, along with information about screening for STI’s and contraception. For more information about alcohol, drugs and staying safe, visit: thinkdrinkdrugs.co.uk where you can also take tests to find out more about your alcohol and/or drug usage.
Summer term:
Garden Party, Excellence Awards, Hollywood Ball, Jack in the Green festival

Advice and support whenever you need it We hope that you’ll have a great time at University, but if you have any difficulties with the academic side of your student life, the Students’ Union Support Service (SUSS) is here to help.
Our friendly advisers are always on hand to provide advice throughout the time you’re studying here. We are an independent team separate from the University. Therefore, we can represent you, advocate on your behalf on academic issues, even keep your identity anonymous if you wish. Our close working relationships mean you stand a better chance if you get help from us.
What some of last year’s volunteers have said: “One of the highlights of my studies is volunteering for CaSH”
“It’s been great! It’s a brilliant volunteering role because you feel important in that you get to run the drop-in yourself, while also gaining skills”
“This year was such a wonderful experience for me. A chance to connect with other students who were volunteering and meeting students who utilised the service”
How to get involved: We are looking for Volunteer Outreach Workers to help deliver our exciting outreach programme and Volunteer Health Support Workers to run our sexual health drop-ins. All CaSH volunteers receive full training and induction into the role, as well as on-going support to carry out their work for CaSH. Apply to be a CaSH volunteer by sending us an application form telling us why you’d be a great volunteer. You can find out more about CaSH and volunteering with us, as well as downloading an application form from our website: brightonsu.com/cash Hurry! Don’t miss the deadline to be part of this year’s team!
You can speak to us freely, honestly and confidentially and our role is to inform you of the options available, helping you make informed decisions to resolve the issues. We can advise on a range of academic related issues including: academic appeals, fitness to practice hearings, academic misconduct, mitigating circumstances, disciplinary issues or complaints.
We are able to support you through the complaints procedure, offering help, understanding the guidance, accompanying you to meetings and ensuring you are treated fairly throughout the process. We can also advise on the evidence that will support your application. We can offer advice on when it is appropriate to appeal a decision on your results as well as advise on the correct actions to take, the correct grounds for an appeal and help identifying suitable evidence. If you’re accused of Academic Misconduct we can help by looking through your work, identifying the source of the allegation, and help to prepare you by discussing your options, possible outcomes and accompanying you to the meeting. We offer help and information on a wide range of problems affecting students’ lives. If you have problems that you can’t deal with on your own, book an appointment with the Students’ Union Support Service. The earlier our advisers see you, the sooner we can help.

Mark contacted us on being told that his work was being investigated for academic misconduct. After struggling with academic work throughout the whole of his course, the literature review section of Mark’s dissertation had been found to contain 45% allegedly ‘plagiarised’ material from other sources. Whilst Mark knew that there would probably be issues with the work before submitting it, he was still very shocked to receive a letter informing him that he was expected to appear in front of a university panel. He imagined that he would be thrown off his course, and was extremely nervous about the proceedings. Fortunately for Mark, we were able to help him understand what to expect, explain the process and give him confidence. We attended the panel hearing with him and ensured everything had been carried out correctly. Afterwards Mark said; “I am so grateful for everything you have done for me. You helped me and gave me reassurance when I needed it most. Thank you! “*
Maria came to see us in some distress, having received a letter indicating that she was to be withdrawn from her course. Maria had failed a placement module on her second attempt, and she would not normally be offered another. Reviewing the assessment of her work written by her mentor, she was alarmed by the negativity of the feedback. However, Maria felt that she had been poorly supported on her placement and that the feedback was unfair. “After talking at length with Maria we were able to discern that she also had personal issues which had been affecting her performance. This gave her grounds for an appeal.” In time, Maria’s appeal was successful, and she was allowed a third attempt to complete her placement. By being there for Maria and helping her identify the issues and obtain help we were able to help her attempt her studies under better circumstances, obtain her qualification and go on to have a successful career.
* These examples represent typical issues and outcomes of the work we do. The details of these cases have been changed to protect anonymity.
Your Student Voice Brighton SU is a democratic membership organisation that is run for students by students. Our members (that’s you!) inform our work and help set our agenda. Here are the different ways you can get involved: Sort It! This is the easiest way to get involved in the Students’ Union and help make university a better place. If you see something small that you think needs sorting, all you have to do is fill out the ‘Sort It’ form on our website and our Campus Action Teams will get on with fixing it for you!
Campus Action Teams (CATS) Campus Action Teams are groups of elected students that work to make improvements to your campus. They can also run campus specific events and campaigns to improve the student experience.
Change It! Is there an issue you think we should be campaigning on? Is there a project we should run that would help University of Brighton students? Then let us know! All you have to do is go to the website and add an idea to the ‘Change It’ wall. Each month we’ll take the top 3 ideas to Union Council where they will be debated and voted upon. If people vote yes to your idea, we will work with you to make it a reality!
Union Council Any student can come to Union Council and debate the ideas that have been submitted. Union Council meets once a month and is attended by all full time and part time officers of Brighton Students’ Union.
brightonsu.com/changethings
Societies All Student Questions (ASQ) ‘All Student Questions’ (ASQ) is exactly what it says on the tin. If an idea goes to Union Council and doesn’t get a strong yes or no vote, it gets sent to an ASQ. This means the idea will get put on our website for you, as BSU members, to vote yes or no on. Every member gets a vote and if more than two hundred people vote and the majority vote yes, we make the idea a reality!
Forums, Committees & Action Groups Throughout the year we also hold a number of forums, committees and action groups. These groups give students an opportunity to scrutinise our work on specific topics, to contribute to our existing projects and also help us create new work.
All of our 100+ societies are completely student led and cover a huge range of interests, from academic and cultural to leisure and faith. Joining a society is a great way to meet like-minded students, make new friends, gain invaluable experience and share knowledge.
How to join “Joining a society was the best thing I did while at University, I met some of my best friends there”
Come to our Freshers’ Fair during Welcome Week to meet the societies in person to find out what they get up to throughout the year and how to sign up. Or you can join via our website:
brightonsu.com/societies.
Liberation Action Group: Plans and develops the union’s work on Liberation issues.
Ethics & Environment Committee: Plans and develops the union’s work on Ethical & Environmental issues.
Council Officers Group: Plans and develops the union’s work on issues that affect, Part time, Postgraduate, Mature and International students.
Democratic Procedures Committee: Plans and develops the union’s democratic procedures.
Academic Council: Sets the direction of the union’s academic experience work.
For further information about the ways you can get involved go to brightonsu.com/changethings
Can’t find the society you like? You can start up your own society if there isn’t one to match your interest, and we’ll support you all the way with advice, funding and training. You just need 5 people to start with and submit the society proposal to us.
“Starting a society was simple and easy thanks to the support from Brighton SU”
Get involved As you get more involved with a society, you might want to think about putting yourself forward for one of the leadership roles. Each group will have positions available like President, Treasurer and Secretary. Even if you don’t stand for a committee member role, you can still get involved with your society by helping organise social events or fundraisers. Involvement with societies is where many students will have the best experiences of their university lives. Whatever your interests, there’s a society for you!

Community Organising We believe that it is our job to be led by YOU! What is Community Organising?
Become a Volunteer Community Organiser!
Essentially it involves lots of listening. Our team of organisers and their volunteers listen to lots of different people, where they live and where they study, and help them to change things that need changing. It can be as small as setting up a new group or a change to your course, or as big as a housing campaign.
We will have limited volunteering opportunities throughout the year. Contact us to find out more (details below)!
Community organising gives you the skills and support to turn ideas into action. They bring you together with like-minded people and help you to meet, organise or campaign.
