Canada’s top students gathered in Edmonton for a week of STEM competition, learning and inspiration Many student projects from Atlantic Canada were supported by Brilliant Labs including Alpita from Newfoundland who won a bronze award So many Atlantic Canadian students found new trajectories by working diligently to get to the Canada Wide Science Fair with the help for Brilliant Labs' mentorship. Brilliant Labs extended their reach beyond Atlantic Canada at the exhibitor’s floor Their double wide booth featured b.Boards, motors and LED strips with block coding. Biomaking allstar Grace was mixing recipes of biofilms while showcasing her working headphones that she made of mycelium and biofilm Olivia was making bioplastics made of eggshells and bananas and showing students how to create algae based thread. We were fortunate to have Olivia and b Brilliant host Alex, capturing live video for our Atlantic audience The Brilliant Labs’ aisle was flooded with approximately 5000 students, teachers and parents from all over Canada who explored how to make their world Brilliant during our 3 day event.

Brilliant Labs supports Current Generation and LEO to CWSF

Current Generation and LEO were the only high school students invited to be on the exhibit floor of CWSF with the Pros like Brilliant Labs, Telus and many universities While it is the number of people involved in projects that disqualifies CG and LEO, it is the same large number of people that are using their learning to do good in the world Attendees had a chance to experience the feeling of melting solder, the swirl of the smoke and making electrical connections They crowd soldered Joule Thief lights that will be sent to our global friends living in light poverty as well as making LEDs that will help the LEO light sculpture sparkle for generations to come. After playing on the HappyWall, their homemade silk screened shirts got the attention of the Assistant to the Mayor of Edmonton. Students must have learned great networking skills, because the Mayor took time out of his busy day to specifically see our booth The Science Dept Head (and previous Fine Arts Dept Head) of Wagner High School, a progressive school in Edmonton, invited our Current Generation and LEO students to visit their transitioning school While Wagner High was impressed by the high caliber of the competition projects, it was the transdisciplinary aspects of LEO and Current Gen that most intrigued them They liked that our students did work for an authentic purpose that motivated quality and diligence They liked that students not only learned engineering, but also graphic arts, composition, color balance, silkscreening, video production and podcasting. .

Project Highlight

Students at Crescent Collegiate in Blaketown, NL were one of three groups of students from NL to travel to the Brilliant Labs Innovation Fair in Moncton, NB in May The groups was inspired by a former Crescent Collegiate teacher to use their time to create and produce assistive devices and tech for community members who could benefit from them Primarily, they have been exploring 3d printing and circuitry to create devices and adapt toys. Crescent Collegiate’s Teacher Librarian has made it possible for the students to tinker and learn through the project and they have plans on how to expand things moving into next year!

Inspiration Maker Teacher

This year Brilliant Labs is looking for those teachers who inspire others to be their best and who are taking chances to try new things to educate students We're pleased to share this Newfoundland "Inspiration Maker!"
