Stacey Hopkins has been working collaboratively with her colleagues and students in her role as Teacher Librarian. Stacey has taken on the role of creating the makerspace at Leary’s Brook Junior High by seeking lots of input from students. Stacey understands how important it is to involve students in all parts of the process. She shares that “empowering learners in the classroom is important to having them own their learning journey! If we want students to be expert learners, we need to create a supportive environment where they can take the reins in charting their learning.” She has been a leading force in facilitating special passion projects with the Junior High students. Students explore topics that tap into their interests and motivations.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHT
Hi, my name is Kate Blanchard. I am a grade 8 student at Valmont Academy. When all schools got shifted to online learning in January my teacher, Mr. Kelley gave my class the task of a virtual design project. We had the choice of 3D design, coding, or graphic design. I decided to do graphic design and use google draw to create a line drawing of my sister and my dog. I started off by watching tutorials and learning how to use the tools on the program. Little by little my project began to take shape. After some trial and error, I had a beautiful piece to show to my friends and family. When we got back to school we had the idea of trying to engrave our pieces on the Glowforge (laser cutter)! Again, we tweaked our projects and we had to become critical thinkers in order to make our pieces come to life. The issue I had with my project was that the light colors in my drawing couldn’t be distinguished on our first attempt. In the end, we utilized the wonderful resources that our school has to make some oneof-a-kind art!
