ROBOTZ GOT BRILLIANCE We deeply value the implication of the UN SDG’s. With the innovation and infrastructure goal, and the aim of attaining inclusive and sustainable industrialization, what can our students create? As superfluous as a fun robotic system can be, for example, a robot that chews gum, we urge you to think of the larger implications of such creations. What are the innovations that can be taken from that robot? We are very excited to provide this challenge to our students and see how they can rise to the challenge.

INSPIRATION MAKERS! This year Brilliant Labs is looking for those teachers who inspire others to be their best and who are taking chances to try new things to educate students. We're pleased to share this Newfoundland and Labrador "Inspiration Maker!" WHO: SHELLEY DALTON-STEAD WHERE: HOLY CROSS SCHOOL COMPLEX Shelley has been an educator for 14 years and if you could ask her to sum up her teaching style with one quote she would say "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire" by W. B. Yeats. Shelley has always believed in learning by doing and this is clearly evident when she combines her Science, Skilled Trades and Technology background within her classes and Student Leadership group . Most recently she has been one of the lead teachers in the roll out of the new Computer Science 8 program, and was one of the lead teachers in the makerspace application for her school. She thrives on student engagement through experiments and inquisitive creations and has a champion maker mindset in her building.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHT
Science 1206 students from Jason Counsel’s class at Holy Heart of Mary High School in St. John’s, NL were given a design challenge: make a weather station, and if possible, make it wearable. "Students in my class made weathernecklaces, arm bands, hats, and a cool set of music-playing weather-glasses! One student used a micro:bit and some accessories to build a weather watch, complete with hand-controls for different functions. Another student used her love of coding and integrated her station with an Arduino microcontroller.
Tech Support Whether you have your materials from last year or just registered, we are here to help you along the way with your challenges. You can always reach out to us via email info@brilliantlabs.ca or send us a video ask and we will reply with a video.
