BCM BEHIND THE SCENES

{ON LOCATION}

Our cover and fashion pages this issue were shot at Myer Centre, the epicentre of fashion in Brisbane city. It’s a veritable treasure trove . . . Boutiques, brands and brilliant shopping, dining and awesome entertainment. Thanks to Amber and the marketing team for working with us, and the staff at Myer for their patience and keen eye for styling. Liz Cantor, the Gold Coast golden girl whose TV career is on the rise, was ‘HOT IN THE CITY’ for the shoot. Liz carried out the role with a sense of humour and considerable poise. A presenter with Channel Seven’s The Great South East and Creek to Coast, Liz is a true-grit action-girl, with lady-like looks and a sunny disposition. She has tonnes of stamina, salt water in her veins and a genuine passion for the new experiences that life brings. “I loved doing this, even though it’s out of my comfort zone,” said Liz during the

shoot. “I learned a lot. It’s very different from presenting. I totally loved the clothes, they were so easy to wear, beautiful quality and versatile, which is what I look for.” Our thanks to Brie Stevenson from Aleece Young for hair and make-up. Her creativity and professionalism never waned, despite working in a cinema foyer, bar veranda and on the street during lunch hour! Photographer Mark Burgin is the evercheery talent behind the lens, come hell or high water, or in this case, hair spray and fluoro-lit food courts! With the tantalising aroma of noodles and in our nostrils and heads dazzled by the colour-spectrum of the new season’s fashions, we wrapped the day’s shoot, conveniently at The Beach House Bar.

BIG plans for Brisbane Lord Mayor, Graham Quirk It’s an exciting time for Brisbane and the future development of our city, as Council has approved a new draft City Plan. Our new City Plan is all about protecting Brisbane’s way of life and guiding future residential development for the next 20 years. This plan puts in place practical measures to protect the character of our city as it continues to grow, while responding to feedback from our community. Most importantly, our new plan protects the green leafy character of Brisbane’s suburban living areas, and big backyards will remain a fixture of our city’s character. We are also cutting red tape and reducing costs for residents by streamlining the development and building process. Our new plan removes the need for unnecessary development applications and reduces building costs, which will be a great benefit, particularly for families. The new City Plan was the largest citywide consultation program for Brisbane in more than a decade. Over the community consultation period last year over 52,000 residents took the time to review ideas for the future of our City. Over the last six months we reviewed more than 2700 submissions that residents and organisations made in response to our vision for Brisbane. I’m pleased that we have been able to take on board the suggestions we received and have made some amendments. As our city continues to grow, it is important that we balance the effects of our increasing population to make sure we keep our enviable way of life. Through the City Plan we are preparing Brisbane for the population increase we will see over coming decades, and integrating the infrastructure to support our diverse economy. The new City Plan is Council’s first full plan that is completely online. Another City Plan initiative is the launch of an interactive mapping service for Brisbane. This mapping program will help potential investors and residents access detailed information about a site such as flooding, significant landscape trees and heritage. All relevant information about a site will be available through a quick search.

Brisbane

Other enhancements being added to Council’s online interactive mapping include contour information, Priority Infrastructure Plan maps and 1946 aerial photography. Many of the changes in the new City Plan are focused on catering for the city’s future growth. The Brisbane CBD in particular has experienced growth in the past year with a number of international brands investing in our city. Iconic UK fashion chain, TopShop opened the doors of its largest Australian store in December and fast-fashion apparel retail giant Forever 21 is opening its first Australian store in mid-2014.

In favour of remedying the serious structural issues and decaying interior, Brisbane residents came out in full voice to support the restoration of City Hall January saw the opening of the Apple Store in the historic MacArthur Chambers, which underwent a detailed refurbishment to house the technology giant. The new space blends the heritage aspects of the building with the sleek ultra-modern details associated with Apple outlets across the world. Jewellers Cartier and Bulgari are also set to open in Edward Street in 2014, joining a stable of luxurious brands including Hermes, Gucci, Chanel, Tiffany & Co., Georg Jensen, Louis Vuitton, and Longchamp.

Bcm FROM THE MAYOR

This influx of new high-end retailers cements our reputation as a new world city and demonstrates the confidence international brands have in the Brisbane retail sector. It’s a good sign for Brisbane’s economy with the luxury brand market appealing to local residents and also acting as a great drawcard for our international visitors. At the heart of the CBD’s success has been its continued reinvention. A big part of this has been the $14 million redevelopment of the Hilton Hotel and the $50 million refurbishment of the Chifley at Lennons Hotel, including a brand new retail offering on Queen Street Mall. Council is also investing in an integrated free Wi-Fi internet system for the Queen Street Mall and South Bank. As of April visitors to the Queen Street Mall, Victoria Bridge and South Bank will be able to jump online to check their emails or surf the web. Free Wi-Fi is part of our Digital Brisbane strategy and is all about putting Brisbane on the “digital map” to demonstrate that Brisbane is indeed Australia’s New World City. Our Wi-Fi locations – including 22 outdoor locations across Brisbane - are encouraging visitors to spend more time enjoying what our city has to offer. Continual investment in the revitalisation of the CBD precinct is vital to ensuring we attract new businesses and improve the amenity for tourists and locals who want to spend time there. We have come a long way from our “big country town” status of yesteryear. Brisbane has transformed into a global hub. Now is the time to harness economic opportunity to ensure a bright future for generations to come.

millions all over the world with its delightful story of Anna Leonowens, brought to the court of Siam as tutor to the King’s children.

The talented stars were first linked professionally last year in Opera Australia’s hit production of South Pacific.

The stage production is a triple crown award winner: The Tony, the Drama Desk and the Outer Critics Circle for Best Musical Revival, and is described by critics as a dazzling show, a lavish and triumphant fresh new look at a time-honoured classic.

Lisa McCune will play Anna in the Rodgers and Hammerstein masterpiece, made famous by Deborah Kerr in the 1956 film version alongside Yul Brynner as the King. The King And I will premiere in Brisbane in April 2014, followed by Melbourne in June and Sydney in September. Alongside much-loved Australian actress and four-time Gold Logie winner Lisa McCune and Teddy Tahu Rhodes is Chinese-born Australian opera singer, Shu-Cheen Yu in the role of Lady Thiang, the King’s chief wife. She is returning to the production 23 years after playing the young Burmese slave girl, Tuptim in 1991. Adrian Li Donni is Lun Tha, the Burmese scholar and envoy who is secretly in love with Tuptim, a role he played for the Production Company in Melbourne in 2010 and in the US the year before that. The King and I was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s fifth musical together and is considered one of the jewels in their crown. It was based on Margaret Landon’s 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam, which took its inspiration from the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, a British governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam (now Thailand) in the early 1860s.

A hit on Broadway in 1951, where it starred Gertrude Lawrence (who died during the season) and Yul Brynner, the show ran for three years before touring. The first London production opened in 1953, enjoying similar success. In 1956 it became a famous film starring Deborah Kerr and Yul Brynner who won an Academy Award for his performance. Christopher Renshaw will return to Australia to revive the production, with its stunning Thai-inspired set design by Brian Thomson, sumptuous costumes by Roger Kirk and lighting by Nigel Levings. Susan Kikuchi will recreate the original Jerome Robbins choreography as well as the choreography of her mother Yuriko who appeared in the 1951 Broadway production and the 1956 film. ourism and Major Events Minister, Jann Stuckey has joined Brisbane Lord Mayor, Graham Quirk to launch a multi-million dollar tourism campaign aimed at boosting Brisbane’s tourist visitor numbers.

The ‘Give me Brisbane Any Day’ campaign encourages locals and visitors alike to become vocal advocates of the region’s attractions and to share their holiday experiences and photos online. Minister Stuckey said the campaign was a collaboration between the Queensland Government and Brisbane Marketing. “The funding for this campaign reinforces the Newman Government’s commitment to grow the tourism industry and meet our goal to double overnight visitor expenditure from $15 billion to $30 billion by 2020,” Ms Stuckey said.

“The research found Brisbane was seen as a vibrant, optimistic, open and collaborative city of which locals were proud to share their passion,” said Mr Aitken.

The campaign, which was partly funded by the Queensland Government’s Regional Tourism Organisation Contestable Grants Funding Scheme, features favourite local activities such as climbing the Story Bridge, shopping for fresh produce at the city markets and snorkelling at Moreton Island. “The first phase will appear in Brisbane, northern New South Wales, Sunshine Coast The campaign aims to and Toowoomba on television, outdoor, position Brisbane as print and online in February and March,” Mr the premier events and Aitken explained.

tand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) IS one of the fastest growing sports in Australia and was recently named the fastest growing outdoor recreational activity in the world. You only have to go to a Gold Coast beach, canal or waterway to see SUPs in their droves, catching a wave or cruising serenely in a group. What is the appeal? “SUP is all about fitness and lifestyle,” says Ross Meadows from Superior Watersports, which produces rotomoulded, rather than fibreglass boards from its Gold Coast manufacturing facility. “A lot of our customers are beginners and don’t want to spend a huge amount on their first board – they want a reasonable entry price to decide if they want to take it further. Additionally, the Superior SUPs are very robust and can take a lot of punishment, great for families and the rental market.” Superior has customers around Australia and as far away as Fiji, all converted from fibreglass to rotomoulded plastic SUPs. CAPTIVATING CREATIVES! Macbeth, the original game of thrones performance. Plus Collette Dinnigan’s new book: Obsessive Creative.

Macbeth

Bold and bloody, this most difficult of Shakespeare’s tragedies is soon to captivate Brisbane audiences with its tale of dark, delirious ambition.

A

play so feared in theatrical circles that some actors shudder to speak its name, William Shakespeare’s Macbeth is the original game of thrones – a dark epic of ambition, betrayal and murder set long ago in the eerie Scottish highlands. Wending his way back from war on a windswept heath, famed general Macbeth is seduced by the whisperings of three crones who prophesy he will be king. Scheming with his cold, calculating wife, he deceives and knifes the monarch, his onetime friend, and seizes the crown for himself. But power corrupts, and this is just the first drop of the gathering storm – there’s a lot more bold and bloody work that must be done for the Macbeths to cling to their claim. Sleepless with guilt and plagued by paranoia, the warlord and his lady mentally unravel as their unhappy subjects raise a rebellion against them and the country is gripped by vicious civil war. Directed by British theatre royalty Michael Attenborough CBE, son of Lord Richard and Lady Attenborough, and presented in association with 40-year veteran Brisbane theatre troupe, Grin and

18 BRISBANE CITY Magazine

Tonic, this is a colossal production with a cast of 15. Jason Klarwein and Veronica Neave star as the royal couple with blood on their hands, heading an all-star local cast featuring Tama Matheson, Andrew Buchanan, Thomas Larkin, Kevin Spink, Steven Rooke, Lucas Stibbard, Tim Dashwood and Christopher Beckey. Michael Attenborough is one of the world’s most distinguished stage directors. He is currently working on directing his own productions, but for the past thirty two years has been at the helm of major theatre organisations in Britain, most notably Artistic Director of the Almeida Theatre (London) from 2002 April 2013 and Principal Associate Director, Royal Shakespeare Company (1990-2002) where he remains an Honorary Associate Artist. During his time at both the Almeida Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, he won numerous awards for his direction and several of these productions enjoyed great commercial success, transferring to the West End for extended seasons or touring internationally. In April 2012, Michael was presented with the Award for Excellence in International Theatre by The

International Theatre Institute, in recognition of the global scope of his programming. Michael Attenborough says his time in Queensland will have two objectives: The creation of an outstanding, high watermark Australian production of one of Shakespeare’s best known and most popular plays; and intensive Shakespearean training to build the capacity of local actors. Featuring an all-local cast, this spectacular theatrical experience promises to deliver significant artistic merit and positive outcomes for Queensland through workshops, mentorship and exposing our theatre sector to a unique process and way of working. The production will also be a catalyst for the education show, I am Macbeth, to be toured to Queensland schools and regionally in 2014.

The original game of thrones – a dark epic of ambition, betrayal and murder. The performances of Macbeth will only be offered in Queensland in the Playhouse Theatre at QPAC. In addition to the five week rehearsal period for the play, Michael Attenborough will offer a one-week intensive, high level workshop in Shakespearean drama to both the cast and other interested actors and directors from all over Australia. QTC presents Macbeth, directed by Michael Attenborough, Playhouse QPAC, 22 March to 13 April. Visit qpac.com.au

Variously described as memoir, diary, stream of consciousness and tribute tome, Collette Dinnigan’s book, Obsessive Creative is a work of art.

A

ustralia’s internationally esteemed designer has celebrated her nearly 25 years in the spotlight with the release of an historic account of her life and career: from the nomadic upbringing aboard a yacht, then in Australia and New Zealand, her early inspiration, influences and highlights of a profession which fortuitously, revolves around beautiful dresses, exotic locations, incredibly elegant models and more than her share of travel to the world’s fashion capitals. “My book is definitely not a novel,” she explained. “It’s a collection of milestones in my life, memories and behind the scenes. I never meant it to be so intimate – it was meant to be more about the work. But as I progressed, I realised they were so intertwined – all the exciting collaborations, the events, the complicated process of bringing a dress to life, of putting on a show in Paris.” Collette’s designs have featured in every major fashion magazine around the world. Her distinctive yet diverse gowns and garments are worn by an impressive list of leading actresses, celebrities and royalty, and coveted and saved for by the rest of us. The launch of her large, luscious and superbly crafted book almost eclipsed the shock announcement that this doyenne of exquisite fabrics and timeless designs had decided to take a break, shut up shop and live a little. Off the back of 24 years working 24/7, designing 13 collections per year, Collette revealed to a captivated audience at a recent lunch at Palazzo Versace that she “had earned some time off”. “I have two children, Estella and Hunter, and a lovely husband, my best friend, who I want to spend my time with. I want to work on projects that resonate with me. I would like to collaborate with people who I feel a synergy with. I want to be spontaneous!” In person, Collette Dinnigan is a compelling mix of wide-eyed naïf, with the unmistakable glint of an astute entrepreneur, who explains the intricacies of embroidery, as compared with those of French lace with wonder, yet technical precision. She is softly spoken, but her words are concise, her voice unwavering, conveying the determination it took to create a global name, which she states remains her own. “I could have sold my brand, my business, many times, for many millions, but I decided money can’t be the most motivating thing in life. It was the scariest decision I have ever made, but I want to make a difference, explore fair trade and work on things with integrity. In 24 years, I haven’t had time for fun, I’ve been too busy. Now, I want to savour this time, enjoy places and people, and be surprised.” Referring to the book, Collette said she began writing by unravelling her DNA. She told of a charismatic dad, an

adventurer with a love of travel. She recounted how her mum, who passed away 20 years ago, taught her the fundamentals of sewing and instilled in her a prodigious work ethic. “Living in New Zealand, I learned a love of the land. From my dad, I inherited a fascination with the world’s cultures. From my mother, I learned craftsmanship, the importance of sharing and valuing the human side of every process. My mum taught me to work hard, be focused and above all, be kind to people.” It was no coincidence Collette chose to announce her decision to wrap up her business, comprising boutiques in Sydney, Melbourne and London, and cease creating her range of high-end couture, bridal, evening wear and diffusion line, on her mum’s birthday, 29 October. “Today is my mother’s birthday, she died 20 years ago and that sense of loss never goes away,” she told media at the time. “I have two children of my own and I don’t want to miss any of those special moments with my children because my work got in the way. I have sacrificed a lot of family time in building and maintaining my business, now I want balance back in my life.” With deliberation, in an accent that retains traces of every place she’s called home: South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, Collette’s words resonated with guests at the luncheon, held just prior to Christmas as people are perhaps, evaluating the year past and creating resolutions for the year to come. “If I had any advice, I would say ‘do something you love’. Be honest. If you’re not enjoying it, it becomes exhausting and demoralising, especially if you’re doing it 24/7.” Obsessive Creative, Penguin, RRP $100.

Safety First One number the key to keeping in touch 1800 Reverse has teamed up with the Queensland Police Service’s Missing Persons Unit to help young people stay safe and stay in touch.

What’s in store

for you in

2014 SOUL PURPOSE LIFE DIRECTION CAREER PATH

The partnership is aimed at educating school-age children and their parents to “stay connected” and to reduce the number of children reported missing each year. “In the 2012/2013 financial year, 4,485 children under the age of 18 were reported missing in Queensland. While this represents a decrease from the previous year, (4,516 in 2011/2012) we are committed to helping reduce and ultimately preventing children from going missing,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Damien Powell of the Missing Persons Unit. “1800 Reverse is a good resource to help ensure children can be in contact with their family at any time.”

Senior Sergeant Powell said the partnership was a way to spread the message to kids that in any situation, they are just a reverse-phone call away from family. “Equipping children with a tool such as the 1800 Reverse number gives them an important back-up option to help look after themselves, and gives peace of mind to parents that their kids are safe,” he said. 1800 Reverse (1800 738 377) is accessible 24/7 from mobiles and fixed lines across Australia, even out-of-credit Telstra, Optus, Virgin and Vodafone prepaid mobiles. Reverse charge calls can be made to mobiles as well as home phones. Visit 1800reverse.com.au National Missing Persons Week will run 27 July to 2 August 2014. Visit missingpersons.gov.au

As a child, what did you want to be “when you grew up”? An actress. Some of my earliest memories are of watching films like Grease and Dirty Dancing over and over again! As I got a little older it was a zoologist. I’ve always been fascinated by animals and had a great love for them.

What were your favourite classes at school? Drama, PE and Marine Studies.

You grew up on the Sunshine Coast – what was that like? Days spent surfing the points at Noosa, to the point where your arms would be so tired it would be hard to lift the fork to your mouth at the dinner table. We were really lucky to have the National Park on our back door step, I have so many memories of days spent exploring it.

How many siblings? One brother two years younger, John. He’s always been my adventure partner in life. We both like to, I guess you could say, live on the edge a little!

How has your family inspired you? My mum and Dad moved out to Australia from the UK just before I was born. So I’m first generation Australian! Dad wanted to live in a place where he could raise children outdoors and mum, well her mum said “you marry him you go”! He loves it here! Because there’s just the four of us here we are extremely close. My family is my priority in life.

What do you like about the medium of TV? I love the visual medium, the ability to share pictures. Selfishly I love the adrenaline of going to air live. You can’t fake live TV, you have to be 100% honest with yourself and your viewers.

You live on the GC now – how does that suit your lifestyle? I feel so lucky to be able to do what I love while living in a place where I can walk on the sand and dip a toe in the water every day!! It is unique to be able to stay in a smaller town and still work in the Television Industry. I’m a passionate Gold Coaster these days. Support the Suns and the Titans!

What are your aims and ambitions? To share stories, information and entertain on a national level. To have longevity in an industry which has previously had a short life span for women… and just to keep things real. Be a voice for all the everyday women.

How do you de-stress from work? One word: ocean. 32 BRISBANE CITY Magazine

The fashion world has crossed cultures with rich embroidery, drapery, graphic prints and tribal jewellery all appearing on this season’s runway. Use free-flowing fabric or clashing patterned prints to bring this trend home.

Enlist your inner romantic with florals, but don’t get lost in lady-like fantasies just yet as this trend can be just as daring and edgy as it can be soft and flirty. Floral has taken on a much bolder approach using brighter prints and colours.

Fashion has grown wings, with this seasons materials flying from the box. As seen in this season’s runway, feathers offer a fun, flirty embellishment to any look. Offering a soft glamour to evening wear and a fun twist to your everyday.

Galleries have hit the streets, with art inspired prints, patterns and abstract geometrics. Sketch books have become the new accessory, designer illustrations the new print and graffiti is now haute couture. Let your inner artist shine!

Hippies rejoice! From evening wear to casual, cowgirl to flapper, fringing has swished, bounced and swung its way back into fashion. To bring a more modern approach to an old trend use luxe fabrics like leather and silk.

Shinny fabrics are making a major impact. Go bold, go big or go home. Embrace your inner Queen with all over shine. Braving the all-over shimmer may not be a style for everyone, if so, try a metallic clutch or accessory instead.

THE

Makeover

48 BRISBANE CITY Magazine

T

he term “mummy makeover” has fallen into such common usage that it seems to have slipped seamlessly into our language. It has no specific definition, but is basically a reference to a collection of procedures that can be performed to the breasts and torso all basically designed to reverse some of the “damage” from child-bearing. Naturally enough choosing the right items from the “menu” is one of the keys to getting an optimal result. After pregnancy, the abdomen can show the results of skin laxity and the generation of extra skin to fit its previous expansion. In addition, the muscle wall of the abdomen can be stretched and the sheath portion of it in the midline may tear and create a defect and laxity there. The abdomen is a common place for women (and men) to lay down fat and commonly after pregnancy there is a deposit of fat in this region. If the tissues have coped particularly well with pregnancy, then minor liposuction to an accumulation of fat may be sufficient to restore a nice contour there. This has to be done with caution. Liposuction relies on good elasticity to smooth the contour there. Pregnancies can ruin this elasticity and if elasticity is poor, then a smooth contour may not result. Instead some irregularity and rippling may be apparent. If there is only a minor skin excess, then a limited abdominoplasty using a relatively short scar (similar to a Cesarean scar) may be possible. This can be combined with liposuction to the abdomen and even repair of the muscle sheath low down if such is required. This range of procedures is commonly referred to as a “mini-abdominoplasty” and tends to fit a fairly limited percentage of women whose skin has survived the journey particularly well. More commonly, skin laxity is the major feature of the aftermath of pregnancy and the classical abdominoplasty is required. This comprehensive procedure repairs and tightens the muscle sheath to restore the “hourglass” shape to the abdomen. Excess skin is excised and the scar kept as low as possible along the bikini line to make it less cosmetically obvious. The length of the scar is determined by amount of skin excess. Where skin excess is remarkable such as after large babies or multiple pregnancies then a longer scar is required to dispose of all that excess skin. Women vary enormously in the effect that pregnancy has on their breast tissue. Reduction or repositioning may be required to adjust size and correct sag or an implant may be required to fill an empty breast. There is often a combination of these problems and a procedure

such as augmentation/mastoplexy, combining a breast implant with a lift, may be required to overcome the sag and restore shape and size to the breast. These days, with a wider array of implant shape, sizes and designs available, it is more often possible to avoid a repositioning procedure in the breast with mild sag and mask this with adequate restoration of volume with a shaped implant of specific dimensions. However, caution must be exercised as if the degree of breast ptosis is more than mild an unattractive appearance may result with the implant sitting higher on the chest wall then would suit the nipple. This tends to exaggerate the appearance of sag rather than improve it. Breast repositioning attempts to move the breast higher up on the chest wall and make it more compact and “perky”. This is in contrast to the effect of breast augmentation which tends to expand the breast. As you can see these two procedures contradict and when performed at the same time there is a significant revision rate. In certain circumstances such as severe sag or a desire for particularly large implants, two-stage surgery may be recommended with the lift usually being performed first. Implants of different dimensions may be chosen to overcome any initial breast asymmetry and a small amount of breast tissue may be removed from the lower aspect of the breast to get away from that “bottom heavy” look and create a perkier breast shape. Whilst the breast surgery is commonly performed as a day patient, a formal abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) with a strong repair to the muscle wall is generally done in hospital. Special fine catheters are placed in the vicinity of the muscle wall repair and these are connected to a small pump which trickles local anaesthetic into the site for one or more days after the operation. This minimizes the discomfort and hastens recovery. Naturally enough, with pregnancy causing all of these problems to begin with, it is generally recommended that the “mummy makeover” be performed on women who have completed their child-bearing duties. Whilst there is no specific health risks to pregnancy subsequent to these operations, a lot of the good that is achieved may be undone by a further pregnancy. So, if you think it is time for the “mummy makeover”, see a qualified plastic surgeon and get advice on a tailor made operation that will suit your specific needs.

Women vary enormously in the effect that pregnancy has on their breasts.

Total Wipeout BCM MIND&BODY

Tattoo regret is something more than a quarter of people with tattoos experience. Now, they can wipe the slate clean with the painless, quick and effective PicoSure laser.

T

attoos are enjoying their zenith of popularity in Australia. We are the most tattooed generation to date, according to Choice which states that around one quarter of Australians under the age of 30 now have a tattoo, and more than a quarter of that group is looking to have a tattoo removed, whether that’s because they no longer want them, or want to renew their ink. This year, we are likely to see even more tattoo and artists on our small screens, with a plethora of series: Tattoo Nightmares, Bondi Ink, LA Ink and a new series about a tattoo school. So immune have we become to arms, legs, chests, necks and backs plastered with these once permanent designs, we accept that our libraries and schools give our kids temporary tatts as rewards for attendance and reading. Just until they are old enough for the real thing? I have a tattoo, I can’t lie. And I can’t wait to remove it, permanently. I don’t want to be among the ranks of Aussies with ink in their skins, much less now because I have two young children. I want to obliterate my tattoo now so my kids don’t come home with sleeves and say “well you have one”. Looking at my son’s alabaster skin – bad enough to think of him shaving – and my daughter’s peachy perfection, I hope the next generation will think twice, thrice or more, and NOT ink their skin. Experts are also concerned that early detection of skin cancer will now be hampered because of tattoos. I am currently undergoing tattoo removal so painless and quick, I can barely recall the process. My tattoo is just 5cm², which is likely to take three to four treatments of just 15 seconds each. The PicoSure is hailed as “the biggest breakthrough in tattoo removal technology in 20 years” – 10 times as effective as the

previous nano-laser method. The PicoSure laser removes tattoos totally, quickly, with no scarring and no damage to tissues, and almost no pain (none whatsoever compared to getting a tatt in the first place!) It’s many times more advanced than previous lasers, breaking up the ink particles so the body can break it down. According to Gosha Skowronek, who has undergone the training for the PicoSure laser and who is seeing steady increase in clients from all walks of life, the procedure is “like waving a wand over the tattoo”. “The laser hovers above the skin, there’s no heat or burning, no tissue damage, no scarring. The laser only works on the inked areas, blowing the ink into tiny pieces so the body can absorb it. There’s a zapping sound when it hits the ink and clients say it feels like scratching, but no real pain. For small tattoos, it’s quick, just like running the laser over the outline of the tattoo. Larger tattoos can be done in sections.” The PicoSure uses pico-second pulses, which is ten times shorter in pulse width than the previous nano-laser. The energy is delivered cleanly with no scaring or burning of the tissues and relatively little discomfort. “Tattoos are a fashion statement, and like fashion, people change their minds,” says Maria Gambaro, founder of Esteem Medi Spa, which has recently acquired the PicoSure laser. “We have had enquiries from men and women who say they want their tattoos removed because they no longer want the memory of the person or event that first inspired them, they’ve grown out of them, or they want to evolve their look. In some cases, they want to start afresh with a new style or design.”

BCM MIND&BODY

Brisbane Building on more than two decades of aesthetic and plastic surgery excellence on the Gold Coast, Dr Terrence Scamp, Maria Gambaro and the Esteem Medi Spa they created have brought their unique concept to Brisbane.

A

s Maria Gambaro explains: “In 1991 Dr Terrence Scamp, one of Australia’s leading Plastic and Reconstructive surgeons, recognised the leaps that science had made in anti-ageing treatments, and realised there were many options available that did not involve surgery or downtime. So, in 1991 Esteem Medi Spa became the Gold Coast’s first comprehensive anti-ageing Spa.” With a legion of loyal clients, many from interstate and overseas, Esteem has rightly become the preeminent destination for treatments that assist in stalling the hands of time. Crucial to the longevity of the Esteem concept, says Dr Scamp, is the commitment to training and the holistic approach to anti-ageing,

52 BRISBANE CITY Magazine

involving the latest treatments and therapies in aesthetic, cosmetic and plastic surgery. “We provide a combination of surgical and non-surgical techniques,” says Dr Scamp, who himself trained in Scotland, London, Bristol, Belgium, Germany and the US. “Our objective is to tailor our treatments to the individual needs of each client.” The reality is, we are all facing the effects of the ageing process, amplified by sun exposure, lifestyle habits like smoking and diet, movement and the toll of simply living. “Skin sags and shrinks as we age, there’s no escaping it,” explains Dr Scamp. “Women, and increasingly men, are looking to achieve a natural look, relying on new techniques, such as new generation lasers and

injectibles, which deliver better results. Most of all, they’re seeking minimal downtime and discomfort.” Sophisticated and discrete, the décor of Esteem is conducive to utter relaxation and there’s no peach or pink in sight!

“In 1991 Esteem Medi Spa became the Gold Coast’s first comprehensive anti-ageing Spa.”

“Our male clients enjoy the 5-star hotel ambience and everybody is soothed by the serene timbers, stone and subdued lighting,” says Maria. New in 2014 is the PicoSure laser, the absolute pinnacle of laser treatment for tattoo removal, making the process faster and more effective, with no damage to surrounding tissue. And now Brisbane is poised to welcome Esteem Medi Spa. Described by Con Makris, head of the Makris Group and new owner of Marina Mirage, as “a phenomenon, unique in the world”, Esteem is branching out in response to demand from a burgeoning client base in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. “It’s an exciting step for us,” says Maria, whose hometown is Brisbane. “One we’re proud of and passionate about. We’re confident Brisbane will embrace Esteem. Just as Esteem at Marina Mirage has been the pioneer, Brisbane locations represent the evolution of the brand.” 9A Doggett Street, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane More at esteemmedispa.com.au

Caught i n t h e Ne t Are you addicted to your device – smart phone, tablet, laptop, PC, Mac? If you suspect you are, you’re not alone. Experts say growing numbers of people are addicted to their screens, leading to calls for internet addiction to be treated just like drugs and alcohol abuse.

W

hile most people associate addiction with substances, such as drugs or alcohol, experts recognise addictive behaviours as well, such as gambling, self-harm or any other activity that gets in the way of a productive, happy existence. Addiction can be defined as: “needing more and more of a substance or behaviour to keep going. If the person does not get more of the substance or behaviour, they become irritable and miserable.” Smart phones and tablets have made it easy to get online anytime and anywhere, but for some, going offline and returning to real life is the challenge. Compulsive internet usage meets the criteria of addiction, with addicts demonstrating severe withdrawal symptoms: becoming angry, violent, or depressed, refusing to eat, sleep or interact with their friends and family if they’re cut off. Technology commentators and researchers say girls in their early teens are finding it difficult to disconnect from social networking sites like Facebook, while boys are more likely to be addicted to video games. According to the Australian Communications and Media Authority, smartphone ownership among Australians aged 14 to 17 rose by 30 percent in the past 12 months. Dr Philip Tam is an Australian psychiatrist who specialises in treating internet and video game addiction. He describes problematic internet usage as “a 21st Century disorder”.

54 BRISBANE CITY Magazine

He consults with patients and their families at the Rivendell Child and Adolescent Unit at Sydney’s Concord Hospital and is a board member of the Network for Internet Investigation and Research Australia (NIRA). Dr Tam has been contacted by young people and families from all over Australia seeking help for internet and video game addictions. During treatment he conducts long interviews with the young person and their family, to determine if there are underlying problems like depression, anxiety or family dysfunction. “In my clinical experience, such factors are commonly teenage depression/ anxiety/ low self-esteem, family strife or difficulties, problems with social skills etc. That is why the ‘anonymity’ of both the Social Networks or online games can be so appealing and attractive. Another interesting point is that, on, say ‘World of Warcraft’, you take on an Avatar, literally becoming someone else, similarly in ‘Second life’ and other parrallel universes type of games. “There is a very interesting philosophical, existential process going on here, I think, in that one’s ‘Imago’ (to use a psychoanalytic term) is quite different from what one is in reality. One becomes someone else in these worlds. Of course, this process has been happening in movies and books, when one identifies with, say James Bond or a superhero, but the interactive nature of the Internet makes this process more powerful. This vulnerability model and transactional model is what is well-known in things like

BCM MIND&BODY

problem gambling, and even stronger addictions like with heroin and alcohol.” Dr Tam approaches problem internet behaviour much as he would with other addictions. “You have to undertake a holistic, thorough and empathic family interview, and then ultimately you’ve got to treat the cause, which almost always [is] one of those underlying mental health conditions,” he says. Dr Tam says the biggest hurdle for young people in getting treatment is the reluctance of many to accept their online activities are causing problems. Those in regional areas or disadvantaged communities face further barriers with no access to psychologists who can recognise and treat the condition. Then there’s the failure of adults and GPs to recognise the problem even exists! “Since this is such a very newly emerging disorder, there probably are very few GPs and psychologists and even school counsellors who really know how to handle this disorder, because it’s really only been with us for a few short years,” he says. Dr Tam hopes the increasing recognition of internet addiction as a legitimate health problem will mean more Australian health services offer treatment. “Hopefully there will be in the years ahead, a kind of network of interested clinicians, that are skilled in treating what is a very complex disorder,” he adds. Treatment for video game addiction is similar to detox for other addictions, with one important difference. Computers have

become an important part of everyday life, as well as many jobs, so compulsive gamers can’t just look the other way when they see a PC. But like a food addiction, those who are vulnerable have to learn to live with technology. Because video game addicts can’t avoid computers, they have to learn to use them responsibly. Dr Tam says that means no gaming. As for limiting game time to an hour a day, he compares that to “an alcoholic saying he’s only going to drink beer”. The key, he says, is to show gamers they are powerless over their addiction, and then teach them “real-life excitement as opposed to online excitement”. Boundaries and encouraging children to have a range of experiences are key to avoiding addiction. Dr Tam says education programs to help young people and their families set realistic boundaries about time spent online are essential. “The message is this needs to get taken seriously, not just by government, but by schools, by families, and by parent groups,” he says. Vocal experts are calling for funding from the State and Commonwealth governments for treatment and education programs to aid in achieving balanced use of smart phones and social media. The federal Health department says it provides funding to organisations like Headspace to provide mental health services, including treatment for internet and video game addiction. AGEING

ell, Christmas is over; summer is half way through and everybody’s kicked off those nasty New Year’s resolutions. Whether it’s losing a bit of weight; attempting to stop smoking or just reducing the alcohol to weekends – I want to wish everyone “The Best of Luck”! The one thing we never see on any New Year’s resolution list is something that I think is the most important – looking great for your age. Now who ever writes in their resolutions, “Damn I want to look better next year?” Especially us men! Wouldn’t want the wife getting hold of that piece of paper. In reality, a lot of the things we are resolving to do, are based around looking better this year, and that includes our facial features. Reducing your alcohol content and stopping smoking will all add to a better complexion through less broken capillaries, rosacea, fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation and overall skin texture. Most of us want to get a little bit (or a lot) fitter in 2014 and that will of course increase our cardiovascular system, blood flow and confidence. Now, if we combined all of these things, as well as having a plan to take advantage of the other benefits derived from your New Year’s resolutions, then we would be killing two birds with one stone. Looking good for your age doesn’t consist of getting Botox or dermal fillers straight away, because at the end of the day, you can have no lines or wrinkles, but you’re still going to have bad skin. So, my number one step for looking great in 2014 is looking after your skin.

• • •

Here’s my take on the process:

This is Man vs Ageing keeping Queensland men handsome.

• •

Consult your local skin clinic or medi spa and get professional advice about your skin type, its needs, and what product will benefit you to achieve a better complexion. Get your consultant to devise a step wise approach to treatment planning. Guys, this is not a one stop shop for the year. You’ll have to commit to coming in to your local clinic between six and eight times over the next 12 months. At the end of the day, they’ll help, but they’re not magicians!

56 BRISBANE CITY Magazine

Your consultant will recommend a really good SPF sunblock. There are some great ones on the market which are SPF 50 and still under $100. This should last you about three months. This single product alone is like your insurance – whatever you spend on yourself and your skincare over the next 12 months will be worth nothing if you don’t use a sunblock every day. Don’t be surprised if your consultant recommends treatments such as microdermabrasion and low grade medical peels. These types of non-invasive skin treatments get results! We’re not talking your fluffy facials here, these treatments are the duck’s nuts and you will leave feeling bloody good. You will be recommended a couple of products for the morning and a couple of products for night. It’s really simple to follow, keeping your cleansers and scrubs in the shower and just applying the serums in the morning and before bed.

Such simple steps and advice can get your skin looking and feeling great within eight weeks. In my clinics, I get all types of men from tradies, accountants, and footy players to stay-at-home dads. All of them start on a basic skin care regime and get skin treatments on a regular basis. Bang for their buck, this is getting them the best results fast. Once your skin is looking good and you are ensuring your investment with a good SPF sunblock, then you can consider some of the more elaborate anti ageing treatments we have available. My next suggestion would be Botox… a bit of boyTox hurt no one!

Bcm MIND&BODY

Hair Today, GON E T O MO R R O W

E

verybody loses hair, around 500 to 100 hairs each day through brushing, showering and general activities. In healthy follicles these hairs will soon be replaced by new hair. But if you are losing hair in larger amounts, or your hair is thinning, and you are female, you are not alone. In fact, 50% of all women will experience some form of hair loss, whether that’s from genetic factors, referred to as “Androgenic Alopecia” (Female Pattern Hair Loss), or a range of other unforeseeable factors such as hormonal imbalances, menopause, pregnancy and childbirth, dietary deficiencies, stress, illness like thyroid imbalance, endocrine disorder, diabetes or lupus, dermatologic conditions, medications (such as anti-cancer drugs), hair styling and chemical processing or trauma. The patterns of hair loss in women are not as easily recognizable as those in men. Unlike hair loss in men, female scalp hair loss may commonly begin at any age from teen years to later in life, may not have any obvious hereditary association, and may not occur in a recognizable “female-pattern alopecia” of diffuse thinning over the top of the scalp. A woman who notices the beginning of hair loss may not be sure if the loss is going to be temporary or permanent. And she may not be willing to discuss it with her doctor. In his book, You: Being Beautiful, Dr Mehmet Oz asserts that Doctors can tell a lot about what is going on inside a person’s

body by the condition of their skin, hair, nails and teeth. Dr Oz recommends conducting a quick test to see if you’re losing hair. He says to grab a straw sized amount of hair and pull, starting from the roots out to see how many hairs come out. If more than six hairs come out, you are losing hair rapidly. If your loss is rapid and extreme, Dr Oz advises that it could well be a sign of something bigger internally, so you should have a blood test with your medical practitioner. “The condition of hair is a good indication if something is happening internally.” Male pattern hair loss is caused by three things: genes, hormones, and age. Roughly onethird of the male population starts to lose hair by the age of 45. By the time retirement rolls around, nearly all men have some degree of hair loss. If your family tree is missing a fair amount of foliage, there’s little you can do to prevent your own leaves from falling out. Hair loss treatments can slow down the balding process, but there’s no cure for male pattern baldness. The two treatments approved for male pattern baldness are minoxidil and finasteride. Hair loss returns when you stop using either medication. Other remedies for hair loss include hair transplants, and plastic surgery procedures, such as scalp reduction. It probably goes without saying that if you’re not distressed by hair loss, there’s no reason to treat it. As a general rule, though, it’s easier to maintain hair than it is to regrow it, so if you think you may be bothered by hair loss as it progresses, treat your thinning hair as soon as possible.

“The condition of hair is a good indication if something is happening internally.”

Bcm REVIEW with Graeme Del Faverois

Have you planned for the inevitable? Graeme Del Favero, Representative - Principal, Crowe Horwath - Brisbane (Phone 07 3233 3508) When meeting a new client, the first question I always ask is: “Do you have a Will?” More often than not, the answer is either “No”, or “Yes” swiftly followed by “But it hasn’t been updated for years and no longer reflects my circumstances”. Nobody likes to contemplate their own mortality. However, a far more sobering thought is the prospect of your hard earned wealth not passing into the right hands once you’re gone. Plus inadequate estate planning can be a heavy burden for family members at an already distressing time. A Will is the critical first step to ensuring your estate is distributed according to your wishes. Without one, the law sets out who receives your estate, and a court controls distribution.

Be prepared as best you can A well structured Will is your best safeguard to ensure the wealth you have built is transferred smoothly. Some key points to consider when preparing your Will: • Nominate executors who are likely to survive you and ensure they understand your wishes clearly. You should also nominate alternative executors. • Nominate beneficiaries for the whole or part of your estate, and nominate second choice beneficiaries. • Leave bequests as a sum of money or a percentage of your estate rather than specific assets, as there is a risk that certain assets may no longer exist when your estate is distributed. • Nominate money to be held in trust for beneficiaries under 18, like funds for your children’s or grandchildren’s education.

Tax effective asset distribution A Will can also establish a testamentary trust upon your death, which can be a tax effective tool for distributing your estate. A discretionary testamentary trust enables your trustee to decide the best distribution of capital and income to beneficiaries, taking into account their tax situations. Some advantages for beneficiaries may include taxation planning and asset protection. Additional benefits may flow in relation to social security and family breakdown.

Do I need a Power of Attorney? While discussing your Will it is also important to address the issue of Power of Attorney, which allows your affairs to be conducted appropriately before you die if you cannot conduct them yourself. There are three types to consider: General Power of Attorney – Provides restricted or unrestricted authority over your financial affairs, except when they apply to

your health care, but the power of attorney lapses if you lose mental capacity. Enduring Power of Attorney – Provides restricted or unrestricted authority over your financial affairs until you die, except concerning health care. It continues even when you lose your mental capacity. Enduring Medical Power of Attorney – Provides authority to make decisions about your medical needs if you are unable to make those decisions. Attorneys are not permitted to do anything illegal while operating under a Power of Attorney. Nor can they prepare a Will on your behalf, or transfer the Power of Attorney to someone else unless you specifically granted that right under your original Power of Attorney.

What about my superannuation fund? Superannuation generally does not form part of your estate when you die, because the superannuation trustee must distribute funds in accordance with the fund’s Trust Deed. Theses funds, known as your death benefit, include the withdrawal value of your superannuation account and any life insurance payable from the fund. If you want to control the distribution of your death benefit, you must make a Death Benefit Nomination, your instruction on how and to whom your benefit should be paid. There are two forms of Death Benefit Nominations – binding and non-binding. For both, your death benefit may only be paid to a dependant as defined in superannuation legislation, or to a legal personal representative – the executor or administrator of your estate.

Professional advice is sound advice Estate planning is a complex area. When commencing an Estate Plan, it’s important to discuss your situation with a professional that provides financial, taxation and legal advice, and who understands current legislation and how it will affect the treatment of your estate.

rom the search for a stylish shoe that fits to a life-time of passionate following of fashion, Maryon Campbell established her eponymous boutique and is considered Queensland’s first lady of footwear. Now moving into a new epoch, with daughter Claire at the helm, the brand is enjoying an evolution of sorts. 41 years ago, the search for a stylish shoe, coincidentally in a size 41, led to Maryon Campbell opening her own shoe boutique on the Gold Coast. From the outset, the store achieved a loyal following, and plenty of press given that her range was considered extravagantly priced in those days, up to $75 a pair! Maryon’s forged a veritable niche with its inclusive sizing and positioning as the exclusive Queensland stockist for the most coveted high-end international designers such as Givenchy, Celine, Emilio Pucci, Kenzo, Robert Clergerie, Tod’s and Chloé. “Our stores have always had something for everyone, from timeless and classic through to zany and wild runway pieces. I think this broad variety has kept women excited and intrigued,” explains Claire. Eight years ago, Claire joined Maryon’s as Buyer and Director. Although it remains “Maryon’s baby”, the duo felt it was time to pass the torch and capitalise on Claire’s energy, drive and new perspective. In what most women would think was the dream job, Claire travels to Europe to hand select the brands and individual lines Maryon’s carries each season. As an established institution for over four decades, the Maryon’s brand boasts three boutiques: the first located on Tedder Avenue on the Gold Coast and second and third concept stores located in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, plus an outlet in Rosalie, together employing 20 equally as passionate personnel. “We have had to be masters of adapting to the changing world of fashion retail,” says Claire. “The internet, social media and online shopping have been positive for Maryon’s. We launched our online store last year which works as a catalogue for our clients to peruse our glorious accessories. This has become a vital selling tool for our business.” Over the years, Claire observes, women have become more experimental with fashion and more willing to take risks. “Women don’t necessarily play by the ‘rules’ of fashion anymore and I think this reflects the era we are in today, one of female empowerment. “ Relocating from Brisbane city to the luxury shopping precinct Emporium, Maryon’s Philosophy fills a niche for emerging designers and diffusion brands. As Claire explains: “Our James Street and Tedder Ave boutiques both cater to a client base with a penchant for elite brand. However, when we started to get more accessible, on-trend labels such as Ancient Greek Sandals, Castaner and Marc by Marc Jacobs in store, I spotted a gap in

the market as our clients lapped them up. It is so great to have the opportunity to support up and coming designers as well as those established on the fashion scene. I just discovered jewellery designer, Maria Francesco Pepe in London, bursting with talent and dressing Lady Gaga with crazy commissioned pieces. Then in New York, I met the gorgeous twins Elizabeth and Kathryn behind the Lizzie Fortunato label of accessories made by artisans in the New York fashion district. We also support some fair trade labels such as Faire and JADEtribe as well as IX Style. Every sale raises money for clean water projects in Guatemalan communities. “You could say that Maryon’s Philosophy is full of colour, with an eye slightly more fixed on seasonal trends and experimentation than the other boutiques that champion the elite brands and more classic, timeless aesthetic.” Visit maryons.com.au March/April 2014 61

Ipswich

alive with colour

IPSWICH Lord Mayor, PAUL PISASALE Welcome to the autumn edition of Brisbane Panache. This magazine is such a great guide to all that’s happening in Brisbane and I’m honoured to contribute an insight into what we’re looking forward to in Ipswich over the next few months.

A

utumn is a beautiful time in Ipswich with cooler weather and sparklingly clear air. Without the heat of summer or the cold of winter it’s a great time to get out and see what’s happening around our city. The annual Ipswich Festival will run from 24 April until 11 May and showcase a huge range of events for people of all ages. One of my personal favourites is the acclaimed Jazz, Wine and Blues Afternoon. This boutique event will be held on Sunday 4 May and has a won a reputation as an important stop for emerging and accomplished performers from right across Australia. All this wonderful music will be accompanied by fine wines and gourmet food from local regional producers. Set in the historic Queens Park, it’s a terrific Sunday afternoon out and I hope you will join us. In a major coup for Ipswich we have secured the world famous Color Run for 1 June at Robelle Domain. Color Run is a global phenomenon. People of all ages and fitness levels love this bright colourful race that is partly inspired by the Hindu Holi festival, with its tradition of welcoming spring by throwing natural coloured powders. Runners begin dressed in white, and finish looking like a rainbow after coloured powder is showered upon them during the 5km course and beyond, all in the

62 BRISBANE CITY Magazine

name of fun. This family-friendly party atmosphere features great music from the stage and celebrations culminate in runners throwing coloured powder packets en masse in every colour of the rainbow – a sight to behold. Importantly, there is also an area for runners to get cleaned up in the ‘Cleaning

People of all ages and fitness levels love this bright colourful race, with its tradition of welcoming spring by throwing natural coloured powders. Zone’ before leaving the course. It will be a huge event and definitely a memorable morning out with many happy memories! Recently there been a noticeable increase in foot traffic in and around the Ipswich CBD mall which is great news for local business. This increase is largely due to the new ICON building and an influx of new workers to Ipswich xploring the new retailers. As I get around the city I can definitely feel more optimism and excitement from

retailers in and around the mall. In 2009 when the centre changed hands and property management was awarded to Knight Frank there was a 48 per cent vacancy rate. The centre now has 84 per cent occupancy with new leasing enquiries coming in on a regular basis. This is great news as more business brings more people and more shoppers to the mall. New marketing and promotional plans for this year will only add to the buzz, including free monthly kids entertainment mornings on the last Wednesday of each month. Other plans include retro-themed and fashion festivals – details are still secret, but it will be big. There’s also free Wi-Fi to encourage shoppers to stay a little longer in the mall. This was installed at no cost to ratepayers, thanks to Ipswich City Properties Pty Ltd and Leighton Properties. It has been a hard slog to get this far, but the successes in the CBD are happening, and I feel if we all keeping working hard and pulling in the same direction, Ipswich Mall has a vital role to play in our city. I hope you can find time to come and explore our lively city. You can find out about more terrific local events in our Ipswich in our Autumn guide at ipswich.qld.gov.au

Unlock Your Inner Author Human Behaviour and Mindset Specialist, Natasa Denman left a lucrative corporate career to establish her own consulting business while juggling the needs of her young family. After authoring her first book, she began assisting business owners in product development and writing their own books. Her passion is the Ultimate 48 Hour Author Weekend which assists business owners to write an entire book in just 48 hours, with the aim to create the books as valuable marketing tools. Business is more competitive than ever and getting heard over your competitors is difficult. Depending on your industry, the big players can have unlimited marketing budgets and can saturate the marketplace. Small business owners need to fight the fight on their terms, by seeking a competitive advantage. To be successful, business owners need to stand out from the pack and the best way to be the expert in their niche is by writing a book. Every business, especially those of a service based nature such as consultants, mentors and coaches can win themselves new clients quickly after becoming an author and writing their first book. It is an instant credibility booster and the best business card you can ever have. Consider you own purchasing habits. You have identified that you need a particular service so you need to choose a provider. You might ask around to see if anyone can recommend someone or start to look online for options. You narrow it down to two businesses. One has their book on their website and their Opt In has the ability to get the introduction and first chapter for FREE. The other one has some nice copy explaining who they are and what they do. Who do you choose? If you are like most people in this situation, you would gravitate to the business owner who has written the book. Why? If someone has the dedication and confidence in their knowledge to write a book on their niche, they are perceived as an expert. Experts will not only get more new customers coming into their business; they are also able to charge more for their product or

service. You don’t need to sell hundreds of thousands of books to make writing your book worthwhile. Depending on your product or service, selling two or three of your packages could earn back your publishing costs, not to mention your book sales. Someone I helped write their book recently has given away more of his books than he has sold but he understands the value of having his books out there in the world. The media picked up his story and he is currently having the largest personal and business growth in his entire 10 years in business. You see, he understood the uniqueness that having a book in his industry, locksmithing would have. You are the expert in your life. What you know and what you have overcome to get to where you are now in your business is a unique story. You are essentially writing a book to your past self, teaching them what they needed to know back then. Writing a book is also a great entry level into your businesses sales funnel. Having something that you give away for free (still must be incredibly valuable) to gain trust and position yourself as a person with whom the potential client might do business. Once you have your amazing ‘free’ offer, you need to have another low cost option for people to be able to buy. A book is a perfect next step. Very few people will buy your $10,000 program without first seeing if what you have at a low or no cost is incredible. Business wont get any easier until you find a way to get your message heard by more people than ever before. There is no better way I know than to write a book on your business and watch the new clients roll on in. Visit ultimate48hourauthor.com.au or email book@ultimate48hourauthor.com.au

China COUP Bcm REVIEW

A Brisbane architecture firm has made history, as only the second Australian practice to win the honour of designing a major public building in China. A Brisbane architecture firm has made history, as only the second Australian practice to win the honour of designing a major public building in China. Cox Rayner Architects won an international architecture competition to design the National Maritime Museum of China. The Museum is to be developed in Tianjin, China’s fourth largest city (22 million), and the major port city for northern China. It is about 100 kilometres east of Beijing. It is the first national public building competition in China ever won by a Queensland architecture practice, and only the second by an Australian practice – the first being the Beijing ‘Water Cube’ for the 2008 Olympic Games. From some 80 worldwide architects, eight were selected to compete, with three chosen as finalists. The international standing of the competition attracted many of the world’s foremost architects such as Zaha Hadid (UK), Stephen Holl (USA), Preston Scott Cohen (USA), GMP (Germany) and EMBT (Spain). The competition took six months of gruelling effort over its two stages, including several interim presentations in China to gain progressive feedback and to refine the schemes. The three finalists were Cox Rayner, EMBT (Miralles-Tagliabue)

66 BRISBANE CITY Magazine

of Spain, and the South China Institute of Technology. The Cox Rayner scheme was unanimously selected by the 10 senior judges. The design put forward by Cox Rayner was informed by structural knowledge gained from Queensland projects such as the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre and the One One One (111) Eagle Street Tower. The Museum is situated on a bay with a large parkland forming part of the project. The Musuem will be 80,000 square metres and the cost of construction is estimated at AUD$290 million with exhibition fitout around AUD$80 million on top. It will employ at least 20 architects (additional to the practice’s current 50) in Queensland. It will enable employment of other Queensland consultancies from engineering through to landscape architecture. A further benefit to Queensland is that the win could elevate the status of other Queensland architects and engineers in China, opening the door for future major project work. The Chinese Government wishes to expedite the delivery of the project, with completion set for the end of 2015. Visit coxarchitecture.com.au

TH E M O D E R N M I N I M A L I S T When it comes to interior design, Leah Taylor is keeping it simple – with clean lines and crisp colours. In 2011 she founded her online homewear store, The Minimalist, where her exclusive range has brought an enlightened modern approach to home style. Describe the concept behind The Minimalist?

Describe the style of your home?

It is all about unique, limited edition and designer made products from around the globe. Everything from hand crafted lighting, textiles, prints and home accessories to the clever ‘Stop the water while using me!’ range of soaps and shower gels, as well as a small selection of jewellery. We aren’t necessarily about buying less, but buying better.

I try to keep it as simple as possible, but our home is quite eclectic. Our house is a very old terrace in Surry Hills that was actually Porters Paints in its past life. So the exterior is a stunning dark coloured lime washed finish, and we have high ceilings and equally huge windows and doors. Our interior is partly dictated by the uniqueness of the building itself. I am always rotating my favourite new prints from the store throughout the house. Black, white and timber feature heavily. It’s hard to pinpoint a style as it is always evolving.

The store was founded by you and your husband, Darius Taylor. How was the idea born? I used to run a small design practice that was focused on highend residential and commercial projects. I was always seeking out unique lighting or prints for my clients, and after constantly being asked ‘Where can I get that?’ we decided to open a small online shop. We thought it could be a fun little side project, we never imagined it would blossom into the store it is today.

What do you look for when importing a new brand or collection? We seek out designers not currently in the mainstream market to bring the most unique pieces to light. We often collaborate on special editions exclusive to our stores, and we aren’t afraid of the unusual. We love pieces made by hand by the designer themselves or made from unusual materials or techniques. We look for products that fit our personal aesthetic, so lot’s of black and white and almost anything geometric.

What is your favourite piece this season? I couldn’t pick just one! My favourite new pendant light is our extra large ‘Completed’ pendant in crisp white. And my favourite print right now is ‘Melting’ by Kristina Krogh.

68 BRISBANE CITY Magazine

What has been the greatest moment of success for you and your business? There have been so many great moments! I remember seeing a piece from our store in a magazine for the first time and being so excited! I think the fact that our little online store has just grown and grown over the past couple of years from something so small has been so unexpected, but exciting at the same time. We have learnt so much and met so many talented people and the fact that people have loved our concept and embraced us in that short space of time continues to amaze us.

What are your future plans and goals? We have just opened our first bricks and mortar store in Surry Hills to compliment our online store. And we launched a sister site to The Minimalist that is based in the United Sates to service our US customers, and to help promote all of the talented designers from Australia and New Zealand late last year, so we have a very exciting 2014 ahead! orn in Russia, Anna Rubin moved to Australia in 2002, the same year she picked up her first paintbrush after a chance meeting that Anna recalls was “fate”. After creating a whirlwind at her first exhibition in 2006, Anna was named “an overnight success” and, since then, demand has grown for her immensely collectable artwork. One of only a few artists worldwide to revive the classical realism style, Anna’s unique artwork is based on a 700-year-old technique of painting in more than 200 layers, originally invented by Byzantine icon painters. “My inspiration is beauty and diversity. I created my own style in art and fashion based on traditional principles. Quality and beauty are essential choices I make in my art and my wardrobe,” Anna says. Voted one of Queensland’s 50 Most Stylish in 2009 and 2010, Anna Rubin is also a spokeswoman for personal style. “I have always remained passionately appreciative of high quality and the extra effort that transforms everyday pleasures into extraordinary moments,” Anna says. The Russian beauty declares that her style is “chronically overdressed”, something she owes to her European heritage. Amongst her favourite international designers, like Chanel and Valentino, Anna’s wardrobe is also inspired by Australian culture and prominent labels such as Alannah Hill, George Gross and Harry Who, and Alex Perry. “Fashion in Australia is completely different to Europe. We don’t have to wear five layers to stay warm,” Anna says. “Like my paintings, which reflect contrast - dark and light, sharp and soft, antique and new, cold and warm - I like to create

of

contrast and tension with my wardrobe. I can wear a beautiful summer dress with Louboutin heels and a vintage chatelaine chain that was my Great Grandmother’s.” Anna’s new collection, titled ‘Harmony of Paradox” features elements from her own wardrobe, including several pairs of her designer shoes. A true fashionista, Anna owns 64 pairs of designer heels including brands Valentino, Ralph Lauren, Bally and Charlotte Olympia, which will be featured in works from her latest collection. “Shoes are very much a reflection of how individuals who choose to wear a pair perceive themselves, their environment, what is important and what is not for them,” Anna says. “The quality and design of shoes, however, vary from person to person - from the very poor and short-lived to eminently expensive works of art to be inherited, collected and exhibited in museums. It is the perfect symbol for me to create a narrative about modern life issues in art.” “I see my art as a way of enriching any place it is hung. Just as a good pair of heels adds class and interesting twist to any woman’s outfit,” she says. “I call myself ‘Haute Couture in oil on canvas’ because it expresses my passion for the extraordinary and unique. I make a crossover from fashion to my art by adapting principles of Haute Couture in my work,” Anna says. “I aim to use my passion, talent and skill to enrich the lives of others by creating beautiful hand-crafted pieces for others to enjoy…contemporary classical artwork based on the timeless traditions of the European Masters.” Visit annarubin.com March/April 2014 69

Bcm RECIPES

Everyone, from rock stars to regulars at Mondo Organics, has been raving about our chocolate puddings for years. I have re-jigged this recipe, using roasted dandelion root in place of coffee. The bitterness of the dandelion somehow makes these puddings taste more chocolatey – they are completely irresistible. Here I have made larger puddings to be shared between two, as we do at Mondo.

Chocolate dandelion puddings 300 g unsalted organic butter

Preheat the oven to 160°C. Thoroughly grease four

300 g good-quality dark chocolate, broken into pieces

10 cm individual spring-form cake tins and place them

1 cup rapadura sugar 8 organic eggs 1 pinch sea salt ¼ cup brown rice flour ¼ cup hazelnut meal ¼ cup raw cacao powder, sifted, plus extra for dusting 2 tablespoons roasted dandelion root, finely ground vanilla ice cream or whipped cream and fresh berries, to serve

on a baking sheet. Heat the butter and chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of hot, but not boiling, water. Stir until just melted. Remove from the heat and whisk until smooth and cooled slightly. Whisk in the sugar, eggs and salt, until completely smooth. Combine the flour, hazelnut meal, cacao powder and dandelion in a separate bowl. Fold through the chocolate mixture until just combined – don’t over-mix. Divide the pudding mixture between the prepared tins until they are almost full. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes, or until the edges have just set – they should still be very wet in the centre and a little sunken. Remove from the heat and allow the puddings to cool in their tins. When cool, carefully remove from the tins. Serve the chocolate dandelion puddings with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream and fresh berries. SERVES 8

NOTE The puddings can be cooked in advance and stored, covered, in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. You will need to preheat them for 8–10 minutes in a 180°C oven until just warmed through, before serving.

landmark in Brisbane for close to 10 years, as the fashionable Emporium hub as evolved around it, Mecca Bah attracts a garrulous, gregarious crowd lured to its Middle Eastern menu and social ambience. One of four restaurants around the country to bear the brand name, Mecca Bah Brisbane is expansive and inclusive, with large, group tables, lush foliage and a new menu that delivers a twist on old favourites. The theming is Moroccan marketplace, and just as Morocco is at the crossroads of cultures between the Middle East and North Africa, so too is Mecca Bah’s cuisine a blend of the best of their flavours and techniques. With its staples of ‘mezze’ dishes like Sweet potato falafels with tahini sauce and Baked haloumi with pomegranate, mint salad and lemon, and Moroccan Tagines, Grills that comprise seafood, chicken, beef and the staple of the Middle East, lamb, there’s a balance to cater for western and Middle Eastern palates. An array of sauces and spices are served on the side. Then there are the home-made Turkish pizzas, and to share, Baharat Spiced Beef Shish or two versions of the Banquet, which provides a dozen dishes for groups of four or more. Mecca Bah chefs make all its pizzas, mezze, sauces, desserts from fresh, local ingredients. Yet, nothing on the menu is over $25. For the kids, there are pizzas, with hand-made dough and toppings, Falafel and hummus, Chickpea battered fish fillets with salad, and Lamb meatballs. 78 BRISBANE CITY Magazine

Mecca Bah On our visit, we dined on Lamb Sfiha, open pastry with spiced lamb, tomato, mint and lemon; Moroccan potato cake filled with cheese and pine nuts; and the totally inspired Duck baklava. Another savoury snack ideal for a quick lunch is the Lamb mince, houmus, tomato, onion, mint and Lebanese za’atar bread. Subtle changes have been made to the latest incarnation of the menu, with the addition of the Beef Tagine: tender meat perfectly complemented by the mix of sweet pumpkin and dates, served on a bed of couscous. Among a seductive selection of sweets such as Yoghurt, semolina and pistachio cake, Flourless orange and almond cake, Chocolate and Turkish delight brownie and Orange blossom cheesecake with pomegranate, raspberry and honey syrup, and the creamy Muhallabia, like panna cotta only lighter and more delectable. The wine list boasts more than 40 wines, with traditional Turkish, Lebanese and Moroccan beers, but for this business lunch, where the service is friendly and efficient, Turkish coffee and a plump square of Turkish delight were just the ticket. We return to the rigours of every day, well fed and revived with the colour and culture of the Moroccan bazaar. Open for lunch and dinner, seven days. 19-21, 1000 Ann St, Fortitude Valley. op quality produce and ingredients, and the innovative treatment of them are characteristics of the upper echelon of restaurants, which Brisbane boasts in abundance. But what separates Moo Moo The Wine Bar + Grill Brisbane, is the passionate and professional personnel who convey the ethos of the establishment and the chef’s vision from kitchen to table. The staff at this feted restaurant and bar, housed in the Old Port Office are zealous foodies themselves. Every facet of the menu, each attribute of the dish is offered up with intelligence and enthusiasm, as though they had savoured the morsels themselves – and they have. Key to inspiring wait staff is the regular tastings held by Executive Chef, Trent Robson where the team gets to sample and savour menu highlights. Our attendant at Sunday lunch, Tiffany says clientele at Moo Moo Brisbane are keen to know the provenance of produce and the cunning combinations devised by the chef. “It’s part of the experience,” she says. “Our customers are generally well-travelled. They come here for special occasions, the fine dining experience, or for business clientele, to impress. They expect a high level in everything.” Testament to the cult following is the wall of serious steak knives, each engraved with its owner’s name. The cabinet is ceremoniously unlocked and unique utensil produced when the frequent diner is in the house. With three balconies, two private rooms, a main section with booth-seating, ample lounge areas, Moo Moo is part cutting-edge cool, part timber-panelled members’ club. Restaurant by day and cocktail bar with DJ on Friday and Saturday nights, this hedonistic, yet refined venue boasts bovine-themed décor: arresting portraits of the beasts we have come here to worship, cow-hide cushions and contemporary accoutrements like the luminous wine wall, shimmering planter boxes, and the piece de résistance – the refrigerator in the upper-level foyer containing prized cuts of cured meats. Director, Steven Adams and Head Sommelier, Mark Ganga have chosen wines that best capture their regions. Comprising around 900 wines, the retinue includes wines from Australia, New Zealand, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, the US, Canada, South America, South Africa, Chile and Lebanon. With over 90 wines by the glass you would be hard pressed not to find an option to complement your meal! The wine and cocktail list that has earned accolades and devotees, including Gourmet Traveller Wine List of the Year in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

A speciality of bar manager, Blair Hocking, and a must-try cocktail, is the “Marble Score”: Wagyu-infused Yamazaki whiskey, in which a Master Kobe beef extraction is used to flavour a blend of 12-year old Japanese whiskey, Napoleon liqueur, ginger, lemon, cinnamon and mandarin. Perched on the Edward St deck, we began our Moo Moo sampling experience with breads and a fruity chutney and a jus of red wine and beef reduction. This was paired perfectly with a Neudorf Pinot Noir. The first course, Yellow fin tuna lightly seared, marinated in plum wine with rye, wasabi root and white asparagus was succulent and superb. Two varieties of beef were our first taste of Moo Moo magic: Master Kobe Wagyu Flat Iron9+ (referring to the marble score of omega fat lines in the meat that gives it that rich, melt-in-themouth flavour) and dry-aged Black Angus Sirloin. The thinly sliced, melt-in-the-mouth morsels are served with three sipping sauces and a side of stuffed zucchini flowers. Next, the Moo Moo specialty – 1kg of Wagyu Rump Cap Kobe, spice-rubbed and slow roasted. It’s all about the beef at Moo Moo, and this one delights beyond belief. Meat is sourced from the verdant pastures of Tasmania and it’s evident in the reverence with which it’s treated – and eaten – that it’s worth the effort. A semisweet Sauterne was the ideal companion. The next dish is Quail breast with peach, served with Scotch egg noisettes. Reviving a perennial favourite is ingenious, and the peach nectar lubricates the crumbed eggs. A sorbet with sparkling Jansz Rose cleansed the palate before our next culinary expedition – dessert. The rapturously-named “Choc Delice” involved Valrhona salted chocolate mousse, with banana thyme ice cream, sprinkled with freeze-dried coconut crumb and olive oil pearls – enough syllables and calories to match! This was divinely washed down with a glass of Dutschke shiraz, a fortified wine as sweet as its chocolate counterpart. A platter of cow’s cheese, grapes and sultanas was the final act, teamed with a Viognier Riesling from France: fragrant, spicy, tangy and perfectly matched with the smooth talc-texture of the cheese. Moo Moo is an institution and well deserves its reputation garnered in just four years in Brisbane. Since opening the doors in 2010 it has been honoured with a swag of awards, among them Brisbane’s Best Steak Restaurant 2011 and 2012 and Queensland’s Best Steak Restaurant 2011 and 2012. After a superlative sampling, I must plagiarise from the Madagascar movie: Moo Moo – so nice you have to say it twice! Visit moomoorestaurant.com

espite living on the Gold Coast, I am really not a hot weather person. This fair skin is not designed for soaking up the sun’s rays. But then again ,what skin truly is?

So when it comes to the Christmas break I am usually thinking north… mountains… snow! However, having reluctantly agreed to try a warm weather vacation at that time of year and acting on favourable reports about the Maldives from a colleague, we set sail to the Dusit Thani Resort in the Maldives on Mudhdhoo Island. The Maldives is a chain of 1,200 tiny islands and coral atolls to the south of India. It is not far from the equator so regardless of the time of year, we expected it to be warm at the very least. Turns out that the year round average is only 28 degrees C. Many of the islands are tiny and Mudhdhoo is one of these. The island is accessible by 35 minute seaplane or domestic flight transfer from Male, the capital of Maldives. Because we arrived late at night, the journey there was by a smaller plane to an adjacent island and then a speed boat across in the dark. Despite the late hour of our arrival our butler met us at the jetty and escorted us to our very luxurious but comfortable beach villa. The island has a range of accommodations. The “huts on stilts” or Water Villas and Ocean Villas out on the water initially appealed to us most but these were all booked out long in advance. Our beach villa was large (with effective air conditioning!). We had our own little stretch of white sand beach with warm water and coral on our door step. Although I would be interested to try the “huts on stilts”, I have a feeling that our spacious villa with direct access to the beach was as good as it gets.

82 BRISBANE CITY Magazine

Now because I don’t like being hot and because I don’t like being in the sun , I decided that I would do my best to spend my time underneath the water. So I enrolled in a scuba diving course and managed to complete my PADI open water qualification in the week that we were there. The instructors were helpful and patient and managed to keep me out of trouble, despite my tendency to lose track of depth! The islands are truly built on top of the corals. Whilst snorkeling 10m off the beach, I saw a range of marine life including an octopus of reasonable size. You can see most of the marine life you need with a snorkel alone but scuba gear helps you blend into the marine environment more and is an interesting skill to acquire. Otherwise, the island has the usual water sports available and boat cruises to various local features. In addition there are tennis courts and a large swimming pool beautifully set between one of the restaurants and an adjacent bar. My partner was amazed by the range of treatments, and the quality of services available at the Devarana Spa within the resort, and her therapist for the aromatic pedicure, Ms Siri, was brilliant with her attention to her patient and the procedure. Dusit Thani is a Thai chain of hotels and resorts and one of the three restaurants of Mudhdhoo is predictably a Thai signature restaurant, Benjarong. The restaurant is also set on stilts over the coral with a bar upstairs where guests can sit and watch the sunset. The temperature is perfect for dining al fresco at night gazing across very serene water. Benjarong offers the usual array of tasty Thai dishes with wines, beers and spirits to pair. The staff are super attentive and the service is

Cruise Control

It’s official! Australians are the world’s most avid (and affluent) cruisers. We can’t get enough of ocean, river, canal cruises and charters.

A

ccording to a report from Cruise Line International Association Australia (CLIA), Australians’ passion for cruising surged to a new high in 2012, reaching a record 694,062.

holiday has more than doubled from 330,290 in 2008 to almost 700,000, while over the past decade we’ve seen an average annual growth rate of 20 per cent - a remarkable result for any industry,” he said.

For the second consecutive year, the growth of the Australian cruise passenger market has surpassed other major cruise markets, with last year’s 11 percent increase equalled only by Germany. By comparison, North American passenger numbers grew by 2 per cent in 2012 and the UK remained steady.

“There’s also an increasing awareness among Australian holidaymakers about the tremendous value of cruising and the wide range of cruise holidays available, from relaxing river cruises to fun family breaks and adventurous expedition voyages.”

The 2012 Australian Cruise Industry Report also shows that the local industry now has the second highest population penetration rate in the world, with the equivalent of 3 percent of Australians taking a cruise last year. Only the long-established North American cruise market had a higher penetration rate at 3.3 percent.

We are fans of the diversity and the convenience cruising offers with its all-inclusive pricing.

Commenting on the report, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Australasia Chairman, Gavin Smith said 2012 was the eighth consecutive year of double digit growth for cruise passenger numbers, underlining Australians’ increasing enthusiasm for cruising. “In only four years, the number of Australians taking a cruise

“Cruising really has become an extremely popular option for travellers, mostly because of the convenience and the choice,” explains Chip Popescu from Select World Travel on the Gold Coast. “If people have a couple of weeks to see Europe, they don’t want the hassle of driving, booking hotels, packing and unpacking each time.” With both ocean and river cruising, packages are all inclusive, covering meals, accommodation, entertainment, some day trips. The quality is exceptional and it’s on tap. River cruising throughout Europe, and barge canal cruising through the wine

regions of France, which is becoming increasingly popular, appeals to the 55+ market, says Chip. “It’s very gourmet, quite a premium experience and very authentic. You cruise at night and wake up in another city – there’s no bags to carry, nothing to unpack. Each day you explore a new city by foot, bike or with a guided tour.” The traditional cruises from Amsterdam to Budapest along the Danube are perennial favourites. “You can add options such as Paris and Prague to the route as well. And there is a range of new itineraries taking in Spain and Portugal. You can cruise rivers most of the year, but of course, spring and summer are the most popular – April to October – since they are less impacted by the cold European winters.” The Christmas river cruises are the exception, and are also more welcoming to families with children, as they visit the quaint towns along the way, stopping for festivals, Yuletide celebrations, Christmas markets, carols and mass during the festive season. Ocean cruising on the other hand, is big all year round, with itineraries as diverse as the people who chose them. “Cruise ships work the Pacific, Mediterranean, USA, Mexico, Caribbean – wherever there’s ocean,” says Chip. “And they cater for all budgets and all types of traveller from the connoisseur to families happy to share the experience with thousands of others onboard the Disney cruise ship.” Some, such as the luxury cruises to Alaska can cost hundreds of thousands, while some of the newer options in the Mediterranean, cater to singles and a younger demographic

and are excellent value. You can time your cruise to coincide with events, such as Formula 1 or Olympic Games, seeing the spectacle from a waterfront vantage point, experience a festival like Carnaval in South America, or a different culture aboard a traditional yacht such as the Turkish Gulet or Croatian “Old Timer”. Some of the new cruise options from Venice to Croatia and Montenegro explore cities and regions that are ancient and as yet, unexploited. “You can travel from the Mediterranean down to Egypt, or for something really different, there’s the new range of soft adventure cruises, which can take you to the Kimberley and up to Lombok, or to Antarctica!” Cruising is booming, its marketing and word of mouth referral helping spur on its popularity. “The repeat factor of cruising is over 90%. Cruising has that effect on people.” So, having whet your appetite for cruising the big blue, or its smaller cousin, the river, the first piece of travel advice is to consult the experts. “When you are qualified by an expert, your requirements and style will be matched to your ideal experience,” says Chip. “There are dedicated cruise agents who are experts from first hand experience, training and being up to date with all the deals, options and latest offers,” advises Chip, referring people with a penchant for seeing the world by boat to the team at Select World Travel, Emerald Lakes. Bcm DRIVE GUIDE with Paul Maric

Volvo V4O C r oss

The Swedish car maker has created an all-wheel drive for those looking for more stamina and style in their hatchback, as Paul Maric discovers.

I

n years gone by, you never would have pictured a Volvo as a trendy choice in family motoring. The Swedish car company covers a huge subset of demographics with its range of vehicles and has most recently diversified offerings even further with the V40 Cross Country.

The V40 received rave reviews when it was launched in Australia last year. Yours truly was impressed with the levels of comfort, ease of driving and its dynamics. It’s the right size for a couple with kids on the way, or a couple with small kids and ticks all the boxes when it comes to safety, pricing and features. One of the only things missing from the V40 was some of its elder XC60 sibling’s traits. Volvo decided to tackle this gap head on with the introduction of an XC60/V40 hybrid, aptly named the V40 Cross Country. Fitted with meaty wheel arches, increased ground clearance and a tougher on-road stance, the V40 Cross Country aims to tackle campgrounds, snowy ridges and mud trails that would otherwise leave the V40 stuck helplessly.

the largest of objects without a fuss. It wouldn’t be a Volvo if it wasn’t built with safety in mind. Thankfully the V40 Cross Country scored a maximum five stars in recent crash testing. The score comes courtesy of eight airbags (including a knee and pedestrian airbag), stability control and traction control, along with a system that will automatically brake to a complete stop in the event of an impending collision at lower speeds. The V40 Cross Country is available with two engines. The 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine produces 187kW and 360Nm of torque, while the 2.0-litre five-cylinder turbocharged diesel produces 130kW and 400Nm of torque. Both options are only available with a six-speed automatic gearbox and consume an average 8.4L/100km and 5.3L/100km respectively.

Despite a sexy outer shell, the interior arguably attracts the most attention.

Despite a sexy outer shell, the interior arguably attracts the most attention. A floating centre console offers extra storage space and creates a talking point amongst passengers. The floating centre console houses the car’s controls, which include audio, navigation and an ingeniously sculpted human cut out for climate control. Even the speedometer moves away from the norm, featuring a large colour LCD screen that dynamically displays speed, fuel and economy readings. The V40 Cross Country also reads speed limit signs and displays the speed on the speedometer to remind drivers of the speed zone. Interior room up front is exceptional with ample leg and headroom. Visibility from the driver’s seat is excellent, making the V40 Cross Country a cinch to park and squeeze into tight spaces. Rear seating is comfortable for two, but a bunfight for three. Boot space is huge and increased even further when the second row of seats are dropped. The boot opening allows you to fit even

Starting from $47,990 for the diesel variant, the petrol offering increases to $52,990. While the pricing is a little on the higher side, both models come loaded with standard features.

Behind the wheel, the turbocharged petrol really shines. The eager engine takes advantage of the large five-cylinder engine, which is then improved by the use of a turbocharger. Press the throttle in any gear and the V40 Cross Country wants to run away at a sports-car-like rate of knots. The steering and brake package is refined, direct and communicative. The added 40mm ride height improves visibility but doesn’t impact on handling, even when the car is pushed closer to its limits. Despite the fact it’s not equipped to conquer Mt Kosciusko, the V40 Cross Country will happily handle its fair share of mud slinging and rock-hopping. The four-wheel-drive system has been designed in such a way to maximise traction both on and off road. If you are in the market for a new family car, but don’t want to buy a giant SUV, test-drive the Volvo V40 Cross Country. It takes practicality, style and safety to an all-new level. ELECTRIC DREAMS Looking about as cute as a compact can (step aside Beetle and Mini), the new BMW i3 is electrifying! The first fully electric car from BMW, the i3 has already been hailed as a game changer – the model that will make us think electric cars should be the norm. The i3 is BMW’s first zero emissions mass-produced vehicle due to its electric powertrain, and BMW is the first company to launch a volume production vehicle on the market featuring carbon-fibre reinforced plastic to improve the vehicle’s energy consumption.[ The lads from Top Gear UK were impressed. They described their first drive in July last year as feeling “so incredibly natural that you rapidly fall for the idea that electric drive should be an idea that nobody questions”. Judged on performance and responsiveness, handling and get up and go, they concluded “for smooth and silent movement, electricity is the way to go”.

Heaven Scent TOM FORD FOR MEN

Described as a woody-oriental, Tom Ford’s new fragrance, Sahara Noir is composed around a frankincense-amber scent. At the top, the fragrance opens with orange, cistus, calamus and cypress. The heart intertwines frankincense, cinnamon and papyrus with rose, jasmine and beeswax. The trail is composed of amber, labdanum, ambreine, benzoin, vanilla, cedar, frankincense resin, oud and Peru balm. Ladies, this is one you will want to steal!

90 BRISBANE CITY Magazine

The i3 rechargeable engine has a maximum output of 125 kW/170 hp and peak torque of 250 N·m (184 lb-ft). Power delivery to the rear wheels is via a single-speed transmission. The li-ion battery pack lies under the floor and can deliver an all-electric range of 160 km, but a gasoline engine referred to as “REx”, can be added to extend the car’s range to 320 km. BMW HQs believes nearly all i3 buyers will use it as a second car, and so won’t be doing extremely long journeys. Living up to its eco-badge is this little gem’s ethos of ecotips, which you can switch off if they become too demanding. Dashboard displays such as “Tip: accelerate moderately”, or “Tip: take foot off accelerator: speed limit ahead”, show the Teutonic caution BMW is known for. For city driving and short jaunts down the highway, this is the emission-free, guilt-free alternative. Visit bmw.com.au

A Prisoner in the Garden: Opening Nelson Mandela’s Prison Archive In 1977 the South African prison authorities allowed a number of journalists to visit Robben Island. On their tour, the journalists encountered a tall, thin man, leaning on a spade. The man was Nelson Mandela, in his 13th year of incarceration on Robben Island. Today the photograph, captioned ‘A Prisoner Working in the Garden’ by the prison authorities, forms the centrepiece of the Mandela Prison Archive which, when viewed as a whole, constitutes a living record of Mandela’s more than 27 years in prison and his fight for freedom. Compiled by the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Penguin, RRP $22.99.

ANZAC Run

The inaugural ANZAC Run is taking place this year with 97.3fm encouraging people to take part and salute our military and first responders. The run aims to create further awareness of the centenary of ANZAC and the geography, history and politics of the Great War. There are two distance options, 6km or 12km, both starting from the Eternal Flame in Ann Street and finishing at the RNA Showgrounds. Visit 973fm.com.au for more information.

EAGLE STREET

The marquee dining space and coffee offer at ONE ONE ONE Eagle Street has been leased to GG espresso and the George Bar & Bistro. The restaurant delivers a bistro style menu and wine list at affordable prices. Offering share plates and up to 25 wines by the glass, guests can ‘save’ bottles that are opened and left unfinished – we love that.

Nothing Rogue Here Newstead favourite, Rogue Bar + Bistro are serving up their signature dinner menu, ‘The Ark’. With a choice of three ‘animals’ and three sides to share between two, it’s just $80 or $90 with a beer or wine. The meals are delicately and oh so beautifully presented while the service is always friendly – Rogue is definitely one to try if you haven’t already. Phone 07 3257 0227 to book.

The Elephant HOTEL

Formerly the Elephant & Wheelbarrow, has undergone a facelift with the bar now featuring a contemporary new image. With four bars spread over two levels, the quirky English pub space now flaunts a sophisticated open style layout, complete with raw architecture and urban street art displays. Bcm HOROSCOPE

CANCER

(Jun 22 – Jul 23)

March starts off with generous planet Jupiter in your zodiac sign making positive connections to the Sun during the new moon on the 1st, making you the beneficiary of much goodness. Cancerians born 2 July are well positioned to reap the benefits of what’s on offer. With Mars retrograding through your family sector this could put the spotlight on your household. If there are items on the “to do list” – now’s the time to do them.

LEO

Pisces

Pisces can be as dangerous as a shark, or as docile as a fish in the pond. You are quiet, submissive and friendly on the surface, but inside you have immense potential and a fierce independent streak. Stars by Narelle Duncan // narellesastro.com // 07 5576 3422 Image by Sharon Hindle // sharonhindle.com // 07 5574 8842

PISCES

(Feb 20 – Mar 20)

The new moon lands in your zodiac sign on the 1st of the month. If you need to initiate a new project or idea, now’s the time! Pisceans born around 1 March are on a lucky streak as the new moon connects favourably to generous Jupiter. Indulge yourself in all things fun loving and pleasurable particularly if it involves children. Consider yourself the healer and teacher that brings wisdom and hopefully some solutions to problems.

ARIES

(Mar 21 – Apr 20)

Prepare to take a back seat Aries: your ruler, feisty Mars has turned retrograde and will be moving backwards for the next two and a half months. That means the brakes are about to be put on to whatever you’ve been working on. As progress slows it provides you with the opportunity to review your current situation and make adjustments where necessary. You can be passionate and fight for what you believe. Just be careful not to go overboard with your enthusiasm.

TAURUS

(Apr 21 – May 20)

This month Mars turns retrograde in your daily routine sector for the next couple of months. This could slow things up on the job and in everyday tasks. Its review time for the way you expend your energy in service to yourself and others. It’s equally important to check-in on your health status and amend any bad habits with healthy practices. Discovering what you truly believe in is the agenda particularly for Taureans born around 19 May. Move out of your comfort zone and express yourself.

GEMINI

(May 22 – Jun 21)

After a month full of techno glitches and mis-communication you can breathe a sigh of relief as your ruler, Mercury turns direct and builds up speed in the sign of Aquarius. Now you can make a little headway with those relationships you’ve been endeavouring to forge. Be quick though – Mars turns retrograde in your close friendship sector for the next couple of months. While he’s here you have the opportunity to assess how much the friendship with your BFF meets your needs. For singles this can extend to love affairs and igniting exciting flirtations. If you are planning to travel expect delays to limit your capacity to get from A to B.

96 BRISBANE CITY Magazine

(Jul 24 – Aug 23)

Stop before you act Leo. Whilst you’re on fire with exciting things to do, it could easily get you into trouble. The problem is you are likely to go overboard. But what you see as enthusiasm can be viewed as cocky over-confidence by others. Coupled with the confidence you’ve been feeling your self-esteem should be going through the roof. Shine brightly, but ensure you include them in the limelight.

VIRGO

(Aug 24 – Sep 23)

You start off the month with the new moon falling in your partnership sector on the 1st. For those in a relationship this is a monumental moment for creating a little romance that connects you closer to your lover. For singles here’s your chance to turn that fantasy into reality, so make yourself visible. Virgos born 3 September are ripe for experiencing connections that lift the soul. You’re in the right place at the right time and can reap rewards from past efforts.

LIBRA

(Sep 24 – Oct 23)

The brakes are on as Mars begins his two and a half month retrograde phase through your zodiac sign. His been orbiting through your zodiac sign since December helping to build your assertive muscle. Now, during his retrograde period, he puts you in review mode to appraise your progress. Have you been connecting with your desires? If the answer is a resounding yes then you’re in synch with the cosmos. Alternatively if you’ve been feeling frustrated, it’s likely you’ve been resisting the growth Mars is bringing to your doorstep.

SCORPIO

(Oct 24 – Nov 22)

With Mars retrograding through your spiritual centre for the next two and a half months you could have some deep soul searching to do. Nostalgic thoughts may make you smile while others have you revisiting painful experiences. What you learn from your past can be useful if you learn new strategies for old problems. Revelations come when someone examines your thought processes. You’ll be more attuned to what brings peace and contentment as you seek a safe haven to retreat to.

SAGITTARIUS

(Nov 23 – Dec 21)

Your ruler generous Jupiter connects favourably with the Sun on the first of the month to illuminate your life. Grandiose plans and optimism filtrate your being so make the most of this sunny period and expand your horizons. Mars retrogrades through your social sector for the next two and a half months you’ll have plenty of opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals. Venus moves into your communication sector to increase your appreciation for sharing ideas.

CAPRICORN

(Dec 22 – Jan 20)

It’s a profound time for Capricorns born around 4 January as you are required to step up and show your almighty power this year. While Mars is retrograding through your career sector for the next two and a half months you get to review your choices. How do you wish to expend your energy providing for your fellow man and bringing in an income? The clearer you are the more capable you are able to pursue your employment goals when Mars goes direct late May.

AQUARIUS

(Jan 21 – Feb 19)

Your mind and beliefs are up for review over the next two and a half months while Mars retrogrades through your higher mind sector. What you would normally let ride may be more difficult to ignore as you’re more prepared to speak up. Equally you’re willing to fight for the underdog. With seductress Venus moving into your zodiac sign you’ll be lent a dose of charm to help you in your quest. You may also experience an urgency to beautify yourself and/or your surroundings. Just watch out for any garish purchases that could be later regretted.
