(12th - 25th September) Enjoy pop up storytelling and play in a special space created just for the Brisbane Festival with lots of books, games, songs and performances. (until 7th February) Become a rescue hero at the Sciencentre’s latest hands on exhibition where kids can rock climb, fly a helicopter, navigate a jet ski and use a fire extinguisher to put out simulated fires to save the day.

(26th September) Get ready to see Brisbane’s iconic fireworks spectacular which features fireworks fired from multiple bridges, barges and city rooftops, plus aerobatics from the Super Hornets and helicopters all set to an amazing soundtrack.

SPRING Playgrounds UNDERWOOD PARK The ‘Funderwood Hollow’ Spielart adventure playground at Underwood Park features a range of challenging equipment created from durable and natural materials for Brisbane Kids to explore; including climbing nets, rope bridges and a climbing wall, the towers of which are up to five metres high and nestled amongst the trees. The recently built playground provides opportunities for kids to test themselves on the equipment that becomes increasingly more challenging, in order to encourage them to make informed decisions and to develop resilience in a safe and secure environment. NEW FARM PARK New Farm Park occupies approximately 37ha of land and sees over 15,000 visitors and Brisbane Kids each weekend. The New Farm Park playground consists of a fort like tree-house under lots of lovely shade, as well as an extensive bridge walk that winds like a hobbit trail through the aging fig trees that abound the park. It is a climber’s paradise, with a good cover of mulch to protect the inevitable tumbles. A quick stroll away from the playground takes you towards the Brisbane River where you can enjoy a lovely stroll with great views. The park also has lots of decorative flowers arranged throughout which adds to the scenery.

3 of our favouritE bushwalks Mount Glorious and D’Aguilar National Park One of the most popular tracks near Brisbane is Maiala located on the top of Mt Glorious. You will find that it’s 2km circuit track is perfect for walking with Brisbane Kids, as it trails through lush forest filled with the sound of whip birds. At the beginning of the track there are toilets and BBQs that are ideal for an early morning breakfast before a stroll through the rainforest. You can choose to take the circuit either going down a hill to walk back up or the opposite. There is also a longer more challenging walk to the falls (about 4kms) for older kids or as a spot to pause for a picnic lunch before walking back. C. Slaughter Falls Located in Mt Coot-tha Reserve in Brisbane’s west, J. C. Slaughter Falls picnic grounds is the starting point for some great walks up the mountain. The Aboriginal Art Trail is ideal for kids, taking about 20 minutes to complete. The highlight of this path is the great view of J. C. Slaughter Falls obtained from an overhanging wooden platform. For much of the year these falls are dry (but still picturesque), however they are quite magnificent following a heavy downpour. On this circuit you can also see several displays of Aboriginal artwork in the form of rock paintings and stick arrangements reminding us of this beautiful location’s traditional owners. The entrance is cool and there is a feeling of magic in the air. Shadows are dappled with dancing light, making you wonder what sort of secrets the trees could tell. Green is everywhere: textured moss, twisted vines hugging tree trunks and dainty ferns spilling over rocks. Your Brisbane Kids will delight in finding fairy pools of water sitting inside rock crevices and leprechauns’ homes in the tree root knots. This is truly an enchanting spot. Day Trip IDEA WIVENHOE DAM Wivenhoe Dam is the perfect place to take your Brisbane Kids for a day out, with the opportunity for both land and water based activities in the relaxed natural environment. There is a small beachy area the kids can play on and get their feet wet alongside the dam, with lots of grassy areas to run around, kick a football or lay out a picnic blanket. There are two playgrounds in the park area, with one designed with slightly bigger kids in mind. There is also a cafe and walking tracks. On the way, it is worth checking out the Fernvale Bakery which is well known and award winning, and on Sundays, the Fernvale markets are renowned for their fresh local produce! The best part about heading to Wivenhoe Dam is the huge amount of room for your Brisbane Kids to be able to run around and inhale the beautiful fresh air. Day Trip IDEA ROBELLE DOMAIN AND ORION LAGOON Robelle Domain is more than just a playground for Brisbane Kids. It spans 24 hectares and contains more than 11km of boardwalks, sporting fields, walking tracks and playgrounds for Brisbane Kids to enjoy. The play areas boast various features, including lots of water play and an interactive playground. Robelle Domain has wheelchair-accessible public toilet facilities and the playground is unfenced. There are many bike and walking paths around the park that are perfect for Brisbane Kids in prams or wheelchairs or testing out their riding skills. Picnic shelters with tables and barbeques feature in the area, though you might need to get there early to secure a good shady spot. The recently opened Orion Lagoon is the newest family attraction to open in Ipswich, located beside Robelle Domain, covering a total area of over 3.5km. The Orion Lagoon is one of the largest man-made public swimming areas in the Southern Hemisphere, with lifeguards on duty to help provide a safe swimming experience for families. Orion Lagoon is surrounded by tables and benches, BBQ areas, umbrellas and large grassy areas perfect for picnics. There are also lockers, toilets and change tables for your convenience. The Lagoon Cafe is due to open soon, however there are plenty of other eating areas within short walking distance.
