SOLIDER CRABS AT SANDGATE FORESHORE Another unusual animal encounter that your family can experience together is the solider crab ‘march’ at Sandgate’s foreshore. Head there with your Brisbane Kids a few hours before low tide and you are in for a treat as thousands of solider crabs, usually buried beneath the sand, emerge to the surface. Currently a good place for them to be seen is at the south of the Shorncliffe pier, and near Eventide at Brighton. Such is nature, there are no assurances or times you can be sure to see them but locals have whispered that windy days, on low tide often present the best opportunity. If you the miss the soldier crabs you will still discover plenty of other natural treasures left behind from the outgoing tide.

NOOSA RIVER

THE NOOSA RIVER

The Noosa River is a stunning place to spend the day, there is something for everybody. If you’re keen to try some fishing, explore the waterways towards Tewantin. Drop anchor in a quiet reach and try your luck. In the other direction is Noosa Sound, explore the waterways and enjoy the scenery. Otherwise, head towards the Noosa River mouth and find your own little sandy island where the water is a beautiful shade of blue. Seeing the river by boat is truly a magical experience, and being on the water has a relaxing effect.

THINGS TO SEE ON THE NOOSA RIVER: - Enjoy the sunrise and sunset - Find a sandbar and play on your own private beach paradise - Go fishing and actually catch fish! - Explore the canals and tributories - Take a picnic lunch or BBQ on your own pontoon boat

HIRING A BOAT You can hire a boat from the following: - Pelican Boat Hire - Jetty17 - U Boat Hire - Noosa Boat Hire - Oboat hire PRICING: Around $50 an hour. Or from $150 for half a day upwards depending on the type of boat you are after. BBQ pontoons cost more but can be split between friends and family and often have a toilet on board.

NOOSA RIVER CONTINUED

Image courtesy of Visit Sunshine Coast ESSENTIALS A great day out starts with a little preparation, so it would be a good idea to pack the following: - Mosquito repellent for the reaches toward Tewantin - Sunscreen and hats - Food and water - Towels and swimmers - Mobile phone in case you do need to call for assistance

Tips!

GETTING THERE Noosaville is roughly 90 minutes north of Brisbane, and there are a few options to get there. Set the sat nav for Gympie Terrace. On one side of Gympie Terrace is parkland adjoining the river, there are BBQs, sheltered tables and chairs, bubblers, and a long pathway from one end to the other. This is where you will find the boat hire operators. Not only can you hire boats, but other watercraft as well.

Make sure you listen to the induction even if you think you know everything about boating.

The closer to the mouth of the river, the clearer the water will be. If you want to fish but don’t have the equipment, shop around for the boat hire places that offer free rods and tackle with the hire.
