Mother’s Day
19
Outing ideas in Brisbane
Every year on the second Sunday in May we get to celebrate our mum’s. This year Mother’s Day falls on the 14th May and while there is a number of ways to celebrate, a popular idea is to plan a Mother’s Day outing so the whole family can plan the perfect day for their mum. Here are our ideas for the best Mother’s Day outing ideas that Brisbane has to offer.
A beachside break
Head to the mountains
A ‘stay at home’ outing
A short drive from the centre of Brisbane are some beautiful mountain ranges that beg to be explored with your family. On Mount Tamborine in the south, you can enjoy a picnic in the beautiful botanic gardens, browse the eclectic mix of gift stores and cafes in the main street, or just breathe in the fresh mountain air. On the north side of Brisbane, Mount Glorious offers short walking tracks featuring picturesque waterfalls, wood-fired BBQ facilities in a grassy picnic area and a restaurant with stunning views over the Samford Valley.
From Shorncliffe to Scarborough in the north, and Wynnum to Cleveland in the south, there are plenty of seaside parks, beaches, cafes and restaurants to enjoy. A homemade picnic dinner or takeaway fish and chips in the fading Autumn sunshine is a pretty awesome way to finish Mother’s Day. For some Mums the best way to spend Mother’s Day will be at home. Breakfast in bed, a homemade card and a day spent with loved ones at home maybe the ultimate way to spend the day. Just make sure there is no vacuuming, packing the dishwasher or doing the laundry and mum gets to read a book in the garden or have a bubble bath instead!
High Tea
A fun outing in the city
Bus, train, catch the CityCat or drive into Brisbane City for some fun in the big smoke. Start your day with a lazy breakfast overlooking the Brisbane River at one of the many riverfront eateries. Then work off those croissants with some shopping, a walk or even a family bike ride along the river. While you are in the city, you could see a movie, head over to the Queensland Museum or GOMA to check out some of the amazing art as a family.
● Shingle Inn ● Kerry Craig Emporium CBD ● Max Brenner South Bank ● Cakes by Judy C Ashgrove ● Room with Roses CBD ● Passiontreevelvet All Over ● The Balfour Kitchen, New Farm ● Tea and Niceties, Mount Tamborine ● High Tea at Tiffany’s North Lakes

Easter egg hunt ideas
Easter egg hunts have long been a tradition on Easter Sunday morning and are arguably the most anticipated part of all Easter celebrations, at least for the kids. No matter how old your Brisbane Kids are the best thing is, Easter egg hunts can be done in a variety of ways to suit any space or group.
Basic egg hunt
If simple is your style, or you do not have a lot of planning time, a basic egg hunt is the way to go. While the kids are otherwise occupied, hide a heap of eggs in various places either inside, in the backyard or a combination of both. Just remember where you hid the eggs so none are missed. This option is best for large groups of kids.
Colour coded hunt
Sometimes if there is a big age gap between the egg hunt participants, younger kids may end up with less eggs. You can eliminate this by nominating a different colour egg for each child playing, then hide the eggs much like in the simple hunt, except kids can only collect eggs in their colour. This means everyone finishes with an equal share of Easter egg goodness, plus it encourages co-operation as they help one another find their coloured eggs.
Clue by clue
This is the perfect option if you have some planning time and only up to four kids joining the Easter egg hunt, as it can get complicated. Create a set of clues for each of the children, leading them to a different surprise location. The final clue may lead to a mega surprise, like a larger egg or gift.
Glow in the dark Easter egg hunt
Another really fun idea that even tweens are likely to want to join in with is a glow in the dark Easter egg hunt at night. To make the eggs glow, place glow sticks or LED finger lights inside plastic Easter eggs or you could paint the plastic egg shells with glow in the dark spray paint and hide a small prize inside the egg. The glow in the dark hunt can be completed indoors with the lights switched off if the kids are too scared to hunt outside in the dark.
Non-Edible Easter Hunt
Not everyone can have chocolate or candy and this can lead to them missing out on the awesome fun of Easter egg hunts, but that does not need to be the case. Instead of usual chocolate eggs, use hollow plastic eggs filled with non-candy prizes such as small trinkets like toys, tokens for a day out, or even Easter Bunny cash.

SPRINGBROOK NATIONAL PARK Explore Natural Bridge and discover glow worms
When it’s time to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, we are lucky to have plenty of day-trip options within easy driving distance of Brisbane. Destinations that give families a chance to unwind, get in touch with nature, and spend some quality time together. One of these is Springbrook National Park, a World Heritage-listed rainforest known for its cascading waterfalls, beautiful scenery, and wildlife surprises. Springbrook provides the perfect relief during the warmer months of the year and offers plenty of walking tracks ranging from 300m to 54km in length. •
Springbrook is about 100km from Brisbane and is easily accessed by taking the Nerang exit off the Pacific Motorway (M1).
•
A popular section of the park is known as Natural Bridge, named after the rock bridge that was formed when years of water flow and pressure eroded a cave at the base of a waterfall.
•
The Natural Bridge circuit is a 1km Class 2 track that is suitable for all fitness levels.
•
The sealed track takes you through the rainforest, across Cave Creek and into the cave to view the waterfall.
•
It’s not suitable for prams but still an easy walk for most of the family

Glow worms
If you time your visit toward the end of the day, you will even be able to see some glow-worms. Natural Bridge is known for its glow worms and you can find them around the track on rocky overhangs and on steep banks. The biggest colony can be found on the cave ceiling. Glow-worms are only found in Australia and New Zealand and can usually be seen during the wetter months of December to March. They are best seen after sunset so bring a torch to help make your way around the track. Don’t shine the torch on the glow worms though! It can affect their feeding and make them stop glowing. Please keep to the path as part of Cave Creek is a restricted access area due to an unstable rock face and the potential for serious injury. You can read more about the restricted access area here.
Restricted access area
Tips
• Lock your car and don’t leave any valuables behind when you head off on your walk. • Pack insect repellent and plenty of water • Good walking shoes required • Check the weather before heading out and let someone know where you are going. • It can be 5 degrees cooler in the hinterland so pack a warm set of clothes.
Other things to do nearby
• The twin falls circuit which takes you down into the depths of the rainforest, through rock clefts and behind two waterfalls! • Picnic at Apple Tree Picnic Grounds or grab a bite to eat at one of the cafes nearby • Buy some fudge to eat the famous Springbrook fudge shop • You can camp or stay in a variety of different places nearby – just head to explorespringbrook.com for their tourist guide.

Places to see animals around Brisbane
26
We might be raising kids in the city, but it doesn’t mean we can’t get up close and personal with friends of the furry kind once-in-a-while and we don’t need to wait until the Ekka rolls into town every August. There are plenty of places in South East Queensland to see animals and wildlife all year round. Here are some of our favourites.
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
Opened in 1927, Lone Pine is the world’s largest koala sanctuary and is home to over 130 koalas. Don’t be fooled by the name though, you will also find plenty of other animals at this Brisbane institution. It is home to barn animals, snakes, birds, and the elusive platypus. Check the daily show schedule to see all the animals in action. Where: 708 Jesmond Road, Fig Tree Pocket, Q 4069 Open: 7 days per week. 9am – 5pm. Highlights: The lorikeet bird feeding, the bird show and the amazing platypus enclosure
Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre
Located at The Gap, Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre has been set up to educate visitors about the animals that are found around South East Queensland. The centre has been designed with natural exhibits to replicate the animals’ actual habitat. You will find reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish, and mammals here. There is also a nocturnal-house so you can see the animals that only come out at night. You can spend a whole day at Walkabout Creek. Located next to Enoggera Reservoir, it’s the perfect place for a walk or swim after you’ve seen the animals. Where:
60 Mt Nebo Road, The Gap, Q 4061
Open: 7 days per week. 9am – 4.30pm. Highlights: The Gondwana Platypus Rockpool and check the Brisbane Kids calendar for any holiday activities.
Trevena Glen Farm
Only a 40-minute drive from Brisbane City, Trevena Glen Farm gives kids the chance to feed and cuddle their favourite farm animals. You will see horses, sheep, pigs, guinea pigs, miniature ponies, and even a donkey. You may even be lucky enough to meet some baby animals. Where: 1132 Winn Road, Mount Samson, Q 4520 Open: 1st Saturday of each month. 9am – 12pm. Highlights: They offer tractor wagon rides and pony rides.
Ipswich Nature Centre
The Ipswich Nature Centre has been set up to replicate the local bushland and habitats for native animals. Described as Ipswich’s best kept secret, you will find wallabies, emus, quolls, wombats and a rainforest bird aviary here. Where: Open: Highlight:
www.brisbanekids.com.au
Queens Park, Goleby Avenue, Ipswich, Q 4305 Tuesday to Sunday. 9.30am – 4pm. They have a Bilby enclosure!
O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat – Wildlife of O’Reilly’s
O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat offers something for everyone. When it comes to animal experiences, you can’t go past their Birds of Prey show. The show is held daily at 1pm. In this show you will see owls, falcons, or eagles in full flight showing off their amazing aerobatic skills. O’Reilly’s also offers a one-on-one experience afterwards if you want to get up close and personal with these majestic birds. Where: 3582 Lamington National Park Road, O’Reilly, Q 4275 Open: 7 days per week. 10am and 1pm Highlights: The tree top walk, the flying fox (one for big kids and little) and a chance to feed some king parrots!
Other places to see the animals Australia Zoo – Home to over 1,000 species of animal with animals shows and feedings and a huge amount of things to see and do. Located at Beewah on the Sunshine Coast Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary (Gold Coast) – 27 hectares of lush rainforest with a range of favourite native animals, a popular bird show, Segway tour and sneak peek into the work they do in their wildlife hospital. Located at Currumbin on the Gold Coast Daisy Hill Koala Centre – free and relaxed. Head there for a picnic and spy on the resident koalas. Note: this is a look but don’t touch experience. Located 25kms from Brisbane City centre at Daisy Hill
Darling Downs Zoo – Animals from all around the world with a chance to see herds of zebra, meerkats, white and African lion, aldabra giant tortoises and more. Their variety is attributed to their participation in preservation programs as well as accepting orphaned and injured animals.
