Mount Coolum Watching the sunrise in the early hours of the morning is nothing short of magical. While you may need to set the alarm much earlier than you are used to, and partake in exercise well before 9am, the experience will leave you with a smile on your face for the rest of the day (and some stunning photographs). Things to consider • Check the hike grading/level before you go and make sure it’s suitable. • Let someone know where you are going and when you are expected back. • Take ample supplies, including a first-aid kit, water and protection from the elements. • Check the weather forecast. • Wear appropriate clothing and footwear.

WILD HOR SE MOUNTAIN, COOCHIN CREEK This walk may only be 700m one-way, but it is steep! A concrete path runs from the carpark to the fire tower lookout. At the top, you will find 360-degree views of the Glasshouse Mountains and Pumicestone Passage. The walk is doable with kids, though you may need to slow down and stop regularly.

MT CO OT-THA, TOOWONG Hike to the summit of Mt Coot-tha via the popular Summit Trail, which starts at JC Slaughter Falls picnic area, and winds its way to the lookout. It’s a relatively easy uphill track, with some steps along the way. After catching the sunrise, make your way back down via the Mahogany Trail, which is 2.6km and mostly shady.

The popular Mt Ngungun is probably the most achievable climb of the Glasshouse Mountains for children aged six years and above. There is a graded path most of the way, with some rocky areas and quite a few steps. At the top, there are 360-degree views of the neighbouring Glasshouse Mountains.

Challenging yourself with this 1.6km hike will afford you with uninterrupted views over the Sunshine Coast and hinterland. An established track leads to the top of Mount Coolum, though the walk to the summit is quite steep. While the hike is suited to older children, younger kids can still enjoy part of the hike and the views.

There are two main tracks, both being relatively easy and suitable to families. The Oceanview Track is 1.2km one-way and follows the coastline. You can either return the same way or via the Rainforest Circuit. From Tumgun Lookout, you may even spot some dolphins, or humpback whales during the migration season (June to October).

Mt Tinbeerwah is one of the quieter mountains to climb and is perfect for all members of the family. The first 130m of the track is wheelchair/pram accessible and offers great views of the coast. Continuing on, there is a small fire tower to climb from which you get spectacular views.
