A weekend away in rural Stanthorpe and the Granite Belt region took an unexpected turn for this Brisbane family, as Cath Johnsen writes. We’re driving along a quiet country road just a few kilometres south of Stanthorpe in Queensland’s Granite Belt region, with dry and dusty fields on either side of us, when a miracle happens. “What in the world is that?” asks my teenager. The sight that has dragged my children away from their glowing, tinkling devices is a 17.5m high, 30m square and 7,500 tonne pyramid made from local granite rock, positioned in the unlikely setting of a farm paddock. It’s just one of many amazing sights we see on our country getaway to Queensland’s renowned wine region, and it’s not the only time my children abandon their screens willingly in exchange for active participation.

Scrambling over the rocks, the children are so busy exploring the caves and crevices that we have a hard job getting them back into the car.

We walk away with a clanking bag of bottles of deliciously sweet Pink Lady apple juice, a refreshingly tart Granny Smith juice, and an alcoholic apple cider. After a busy day of exploring, it doesn’t take long before sleep overcomes the kids, now happily tucked

STARGA ZING Stargazing can be a fun and educational activity to do with the kids at night, ideal for warmer nights or camping trips. Here are some ideas to encourage and inspire a love of the night sky:
SIR THOMAS BRISBANE PL ANE TARIUM The Planetarium at Toowong centres around the Cosmic Skydome, which is a circular theatre where audiences lie back on reclined theatre seats to watch shows that are projected by a state-of-the-art optical star projector onto the huge domed ceiling. Your kids can also check out a full-size reproduction of Neil Armstrong’s spacesuit, models of spacecraft, and fragments of asteroids. On selected Saturday evenings, the Planetarium also hosts demonstrations in their Observatory. Admission to the Planetarium is free, though you do need tickets for Cosmic Skydome shows.

MT CO OT-THA LO OKOUT Once a month, Mt Coot-tha plays host to the Brisbane Astronomical Society’s free public viewing nights for those interested in astronomy. As long as the moon is clearly visible, members of the public have the opportunity to explore the night sky through a telescope, learn more about using a telescope and learn more about planets and stars. Members of the Society are always willing to impart practical advice for novice and experienced observers, making it the perfect starting point for kids who are interested in astronomy. You don’t need to be a member of the Society to take part, and there is no cost for these events. However, a donation to the Society is always greatly appreciated. SP OT THE INTERNATIONAL S PAC E STAT I O N The International Space Station is one of the brightest objects in the night sky and can be easily seen by the naked eye. Spot the Station is a free NASA service that will alert you when a good sighting of the station will occur near you.
NASA A HUMAN ADVENTURE If your child is interested in space and you haven’t seen the NASA exhibition at the Queensland Museum, then consider making time before it finishes on 9th October. Featuring over 250 artefacts from the history of space travel, this is a ticketed event and costs can be found on the Queensland Museum website.

The SkyView Lite app for iOS and Android uses your phone’s camera to accurately locate and identify celestial objects in the sky, day or night. Night Sky is a free app for iOS featuring an augmented reality sky map that users can move around to check out the stars, satellites, planets and constellations. Star Walk is a free app for iOS and Android devices helping you to identify over 200,000 stars, planets, constellations and satellites in the night sky. You can even set reminders for upcoming celestial events.

WALK TO KING ISL AND AT LOW TIDE Did you know that you can walk all the way to an island from the mainland just near Brisbane?! This unique sea walk between Wellington Point and King Island at low tide is a definite bucket-list item to experience with your Brisbane Kids!
King Island King Island is a conservation park that features a combination of sandy pathways alongside twisted trees and surrounded by mangroves. Although uninhabited now, the island was once the home for a family for medical reasons in the early 1900s, and plaques set up on the island tell the story of the two years they lived there in a temporary dwelling on a sand dune.

Walking to King Island Although King Island is only small, this experience is really all about the journey itself. The 2km round trip is suitable for all ages and is much loved by kids in particular as the retreating waters leave behind a pathway that is usually littered with an array of different marine life, such as curling shells and small mud crabs. Although it is important to keep an eye on the tide to make sure you don’t lose your pathway back, many who are a little older like to make the trip as the path starts to dwindle – half paddling / half walking the route. If you are anxious about leaving too late, just keep an eye out for other families, who will also begin to move back as the tide comes in.

What to take
Timing your trip for when the low tide falls close to sunrise promises you not only a spectacular view, but also a prime car spot. As Wellington Point is popular for many reasons, the car parking spots during the day can fill up fast, so getting there as the sun comes up means you can have your pick of spots. More than 100 species of birds have been spotted at this popular recreation reserve, which also boasts child-friendly walking tracks, a playground and a bushland education centre.
Playground Your kids will love the fort-style playground, which includes bridges, climbing nets, a climbing wall, slides and swings. The playground is shady, thanks to the surrounding trees.
Picnics There are numerous picnic tables, shelters, gas barbecues and plenty of shady spots surrounding the playground. It is a popular choice for birthday parties, so it’s worth getting there early if you want to use a picnic table.
Bushland Centre The Downfall Creek Bushland Centre is located within the Raven Street Reserve, and is open Monday to Thursday from 9am to 4pm. Kids can identify the birds they have seen, watch the fish swim about in the fish tank, learn about sustainable living, partake in some art and craft, or even feel a real snakeskin at the tactile table.
