FEATURE: THE ABBEY MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL 2018
THE ABBEY MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL 2018
You will be forgiven for thinking you have stepped back in time to the Middle Ages, as lords and ladies, knights and bishops, merchants and minstrels descend upon the Castle Arena at the Abbey Museum in Caboolture for The Abbey Medieval Festival. This truly unique experience is suitable for the entire family and is one of Australia’s premier living history events. Beginning on the 2nd July and running for two huge weeks, visitors can enjoy banquets, jousting, a Medieval Tournament weekend and even a Kids Medieval Family Fun Week — transporting you through time to experience a little taste of medieval history here in Brisbane. KIDS MEDIEVAL FAMILY FUN WEEK 2 – 6 JULY 10AM-3PM Throughout this special week, the kids will be able to create a stained-glass window or a medieval castle, practice their archery skills, or give brass rubbings a try! They can also paint their own knight shield, princess hat or crown, and have fun dressing up in costumes from the Middle Ages. This family-friendly event is perfect for all ages.
ABBEY MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL TOURNAMENT WEEKEND 14 & 15 JULY 9AM-5PM Without a doubt, the highlight of the festival is the Medieval Tournament. Over two days, families will be treated to a wide range of medieval entertainment, with each day beginning with an opening ceremony where more than 500 knights, warriors, ladies and their retainers present themselves to the crowd. Families can then wander through the 60+ stalls of the authentic medieval market, enjoy Medieval food, take part in a medieval dance workshop, and shoot an arrow in the archery competition. The streets will be lined with street performers who will entertain the crowds, whilst harpists, lutenists and other musicians will be strolling about. Perhaps the most popular event over the weekend is always the Jousting Championships, which take place several times each day. TICKETS All these events are included in the one ticket so make sure you head online and book soon! https://abbeymedievalfestival.com/

BUNYAVILLE REGIONAL PARK Closer to home and only 20 minutes from the CBD is Bunyaville. WINTER BUSHWALK IDEAS:
WOMPOO CCT MAPLETON This easy 1.3km circuit is given the name Woompoo after the call of the Wompoo Fruit Dove that you will hopefully hear as you traverse through the trail, possibly making time for a short detour to Peregrine Lookout while enjoying views of Mapleton Falls. GEOCACHING
GEOCACHING
Geocaching is a modern day treasure hunt using a GPS or smart phone to uncover “swag” hidden in “caches”. The best part about geocaching is that caches are often hidden in picturesque areas which means you can spend the winter holidays outdoors exploring beautiful places with your kids. All you will need is a fairly current mobile phone or GPS device and some small trinkets to exchange for the loot you find. It’s that easy! STEP BY STEP 1. Access a geocaching website or app. “Geocaching” the app is free and you can use it with any ordinary smartphone. If you only have a GPS device then just access the website geocaching.com. 2. If you are using a mobile phone make sure you activate location services on your phone. 3. Use the maps to locate a geocache near you. 4. Find the cache! 5. Trade treasures and record an entry in the log book and, if you want, a note on the geocaching app! 6. YES it is that easy and fun!
22 | www.brisbanekids.com.au
TOOLS YOU NEED A GPS device which these days can be any smartphone/ mobile phone. If you are going where there won’t be mobile phone coverage then you might benefit from a GPS device with a list of locations preloaded. • Geoswag. Which is “geocode” for the treasures you will use to replace what you take from the cache you find. You could develop your own signature swag offering like small tumbled semi-precious rocks or a collection of treasures from a dollar shop. • A pen. you will need this to sign the logbook when you find the cache. • Tweezers and/or utility tool. We take a swiss army knife which includes tweezers and other tools we might need to access a locked up cache.
GEOCACHING CONTINUED
Image courtesy of Visit Sunshine Coast • Walking gear. This only applies if you plan to go off road and off the beaten track. Take all the usual precautions you would take when you go bushwalking as you would when you go geocaching. This means water, letting someone know where you are going, wet weather gear, first aid kit etc. That said you can just drive around an look for caches, you can be as adventurous (or not), as you want to be. • Download a light app for your phone or take a torch in case the cache is in a scary treehole. HELPFUL RESOURCES: http://www.geocaching.com or type “geocaching” into the Brisbane Kids website search bar.

KINGAROY OBSERVATORY
KINGAROY OBSERVATORY
For an unforgettable night under the stars, head northwest from Brisbane to the country town of Kingaroy. Near the Kingaroy airport, and away from the blinding lights of the city, you will find the Kingaroy Observatory. Resident astronomer James Barclay will take you and your Brisbane Kids on a galactic journey through the cosmos, with a little help from his (registered) green laser pointer, and three 35cm (14 inch) Meade Schmidt Cassegrain telescopes. NIGHT SHOWS AT KINGAROY OBSERVATORY Through the powerful telescopes you can see double and binary stars in fine detail, as well as giant globular clusters, star forming gas clouds of nebulae and far away galaxies. You will also see the moon and planets such as Jupiter with its four bright moons and Saturn and with its rings up close. DAY SHOWS AT THE KINGAROY OBSERVATORY On any sunny day, you can sit and watch in safety our nearest star (the sun) up close on the big projection screen, via a colour video camera from a solar telescope outside. Visitors can see the real surface of the sun and huge plumes of plasma streaming off the sun’s fiery surface into space.
PLAN YOUR VISIT TO THE KINGAROY OBSERVATORY Night Shows begin at 7pm between 1 March and 30 September, and 7.30pm between 1 October and 28 February. Bookings are essential and payment can be made by cash on arrival. Children must be over five years of age to attend. The observatory is wheelchair friendly as there are no steps, only ramps. Each telescope can be raised or lowered to suit the height of the observer. No shows are conducted over a full moon period as dark, cloud-free nights are best for viewing nebulae, star clusters and galaxies. MARS EVENT AT KINGAROY OBSERVATORY Mars will be at its closest point to earth in 20 years on 27 July 2018 at midnight. On this night, it will be possible to see the red planet’s polar caps and land markings through the observatory’s powerful telescopes. Jupiter and Saturn will also be visible. The observatory is holding a special one-off show from 6pm – 7pm and then shows on the hour until 1am. To make a booking, phone (07) 4164 5595, email mao123@bigpond.com or visit their website. www.kingaroyobseratory.com
