BRISTOL CITY CENTRE BID PARTNER WITH AVON & SOMERSET POLICE FOR NIGHTTIME SAFE SPACE PILOT
Taking place across the first weekend of December, the pilot aimed to support vulnerable individuals during a busy time for central Bristol at night.
Operating from a mobile unit near the Alcohol Recovery Centre (ARC), the initiative aimed to assess the need for a long-term service offering safety and wellbeing support at night The overarching target was to reduce Violence Against Women and Girls-related incidents and to provide assistance to anyone who may need it.
Over the weekend, The Safe Space offered a secure area for individuals to seek help, wait safely for friends or
family and access support services if needed Volunteers provided a range of services including emotional support, signposting city resources, phone charging and first aid.
Working alongside local initiatives such as Bristol Street Pastors, Hope Against Suicide, the Alcohol Recovery Centre, the Bristol City Centre Radio Scheme and Op BRIO, the Safe Space project acted both as a connection between individuals and existing services and as a means of immediate support.
Through user feedback, the two-night pilot will inform the potential development of a permanent Safe Space solution in 2025, ensuring Bristol continues to prioritise safety and wellbeing for all residents and visitors.

A FESTIVE UPDATE FROM AVON & SOMERSET POLICE’S LICENCING TEAM
"We are looking forward to a prosperous and safe festive period in Bristol. For businesses looking to extend their business hours on certain dates, please ensure any Temporary Event Notices are submitted with plenty of time to spare It is also important that applications for TENs include sufficient detail with regards to what you plan to do. Applications with scant detail are more likely to be rejected.
"With regards to Off Licences and Convenience Stories and enforcement work; our licencing officers have taken several premises to review over the past three months that have been found to be selling stolen alcohol.
AN UPDATE FROM PCSO, NAT NAYLOR
“Hi all,
"What a year 2024 has been, there's still lots of work to be done and lots of presents to get amongst the Christmas rush and decorations to set up. This can be quite a stressful time of running around with work and getting ready to unwind.
"A lot has happened this year. There has been a lot of Anti-social Behaviour around Bristol which I have been trying to manage with the support of levy payers There has been lots of engagement from businesses all over the city with tonnes of CCTV obtained
“Three prolific shoplifters were arrested thanks to CCTV gathering, statements and crime linking. Looking back on 2024, it can all be a bit of a blur!
"Every single review so far has resulted in the revocation of the premises licence. The good news is that the majority of premises are responsible and would never consider accepting alcohol from the street.
"If you are offered anything that you suspect to be stolen, do the right thing and decline before immediately reporting to the police or your local Neighbourhood Officers.
"Happy Ho, Ho Holidays!"
"There is still a lot of work to be done. If you are having any issues with your business or are being affected by Anti-social behaviour, please get in contact with the BID and I will be more than happy to support you.
"Have a great Christmas everyone and Happy New Year 2025."
