Seeing the results of our successful youth programme.

There’s no doubt we had an exceptionally happy and successful NAF Five Star Winter Championships and for the winners the great memories will linger long after life has returned to the normal routine of looking after horses and training for the next competition.

It’s especially thrilling that we have so much young talent in our sport, riders who have worked hard for the big names and are striking out on their own or whose skill was spotted at an early age by a committed patron.

We’ve been reaping the rewards of our youth training system in recent years, with British pony, junior and young rider squads consistently on the podium in international competitions. We have some very bright stars to watch out for in the future.

But as a leading senior rider pointed out to me, the tough part is progressing from riding those wonderful, seasoned youth horses and producing youngsters that are capable of potential greatness through the ranks.

Witnessing the action at Hartpury, we saw example after example of riders who have come up through the youth system achieving great scores and – equally important – happy, confident performances from lovely young horses. It makes for a very exciting future.

It can be challenging to plan the right path for a talented youngster, especially if they have shown potential in age classes. Darren Hicks, who has a stable full of exciting prospects, gives some useful pointers on page 48.

We also saw that our flagship events have something for everyone, especially in the Petplan Equine Area Festival Winter Championships – from a rider who purchased a dressage horse as 60th birthday present to herself to those successfully dipping their toe into the sport from other disciplines.

With finances still tight all round, it’s heart-warming that we saw such strong support and enthusiasm at Hartpury.

Training activity is crucial to the development of the sport, not to mention that it is an aspect very much enjoyed by members. So it’s great to see that our Para riders will get their own Academy this year, developing their skills for a highly competitive competition scene or just helping them to get more out of life-enriching equestrian activity.

We’ve got a great summer of dressage action ahead, whether you enjoy competing at your level, watching the big names at our exciting calendar of major events or furthering your training at clinics and camps. Time to relish our fantastic sport.

PARA ACADEMY LAUNCHED

British Dressage has launched a new Para Academy programme to help riders develop their training, education and skills within para dressage, as well as horse welfare, to assist them through the BD national para structure.

The Para Academy will comprise of two two-day camps, running in October 2023 and April 2024, subsidised by British Dressage. Applications are now open, and close on 1 August 2023.

British Dressage Para Director Tracy Ormrod commented; “The launch of the first Para Academy is an exciting development for para riders aiming to progress through the levels and develop their skills.

“The team has created an opportunity that provides first-rate access to excellent quality training, coaches and equestrian professionals in a friendly, supportive environment.

“We look forward to the first events taking place in the autumn.”

MEDAL OF HONOUR FOR CHRIS

Chris Porterfield was awarded the BD Medal of Honour by Chief Executive Jason Brautigam at the NAF Five Star Winter Championships.

This award recognises individuals who’ve made an outstanding contribution to the sport or given distinguished and long service.

List 2A judge Chris retires from her role as FEI General Steward after an outstanding career of service, not only to judging but also in National and International stewarding.

A well-presented and expressive performance, set to music from The Full Monty soundtrack, was awarded an impressive score of 75.46% for Becky and nine-yearold gelding Jack Diamond (Electron x Diamond Hit). The music has extra meaning to Yorkshire lass Becky as the film is set in Sheffield.

This was Dannie Morgan’s fourth title of the week, scoring a double in the Elementary Gold classes with Kristina Rausing’s Vive La Reinne VH. The six-year-old mare by Revolution was backed by Dannie, contesting four-year-old classes for experience and then brought on slowly to gain strength in her training. They scored a super 74.80%, and Vive La Reinne VH is part of a strong squad of young horses in training with Dannie.

Lifelong care

Symphony is a beautiful Hanoverian gelding currently training at advanced medium level in dressage. He is 16 years old and has recently gone on permanent loan to qualified SMS saddle fitter Steph Bradley of Freedom Saddlery who has hopes of competing him once they’ve come to know each other better.

Despite his fantastic paces and talent between the white boards, Symphony suffers from Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) and has to be carefully managed. He also objects to being girthed up, which is something Steph is taking very seriously.

“The welfare of our horses is our number one priority, so keeping Symphony as happy and healthy as we can, while helping him to overcome his girthiness, is our main focus,” says Steph. “I’ve had the vet-chiropractor out to check him over, and she has helped to resolve a few issues in the TMJ and hyoid area. I’ve also thoroughly checked his saddle fit and changed his girth and bridle to make him more comfortable.”

Steph also has to keep Symphony on a very strict diet and limit his grazing time to manage his EMS.

“Although we haven’t yet had him scoped for ulcers, I am feeding him as though he has them as this could also be a reason for his girthiness,”

she explains. “He is weighed weekly and we keep an eye on his EMS through blood tests to ensure we are managing it the best we can.”

Symphony has to be exercised every day to keep him a healthy weight, and Steph works hard to ensure that his daily routine meets the three F’s; friends, freedom and forage.

“He can’t go on grass because there is too much sugar, so he gets turned out on an all-weather paddock near the other horses with a hay ball,” Steph tells. “His stable has a back window and internal window so he can see out and next door to his neighbour, and he can watch everyone’s comings and goings. He also goes on the horse walker while he’s mucked out so that he gets out of his stable as much as possible.”

He also has routine chiropractic treatments, and Steph is following a rehab programme which includes in-hand poles and stretches.

“He also hacks regularly,” adds Steph. “Despite his problems, he is the most perfectly behaved horse and a delight to have on the yard.”

e all know that competing starts at a young age - we’ve been there, life throws all sorts of challenges our way, and not least in the competitive equine world! The rigours of competing take their toll on the best of us, hence we must ensure we make provision for safe travel at all times, and create an awareness of the impact this makes on our wellbeing and ability to progress as we gain experience over the years.

imperative that the vehicle is in its best condition possible for obvious reasons. There is always a service, MOT, new tyre, brakes or general servicing that need to be completed at any one time. Not to mention the repairs within horse areas and living areas!

WHAT IS YOUR CHECKLIST FOR TRAVELLING WITH THE HORSES? DO YOU HAVE ANY TOP TIPS THAT MIGHT BE USEFUL FOR OTHERS?

Always keep very organised lorries with basic kit on them, depending on what show we are going to. Passports and official paperwork are all kept in files, so we have these to hand also. Having kit on 2 lorries obviously comes with a cost but having kit on lorries ready for shows outweighs this cost for a less stressful departure!!

Travelling with horses is not that stressful, its more the preparation for travelling that is stressful, it is always a worry as if there is a problem then it is always harder with horses on board, having the right support behind you whilst on the road is very important and we would not travel anywhere without Equine Rescue Services behind us!

If you have ever been unlucky enough to suffer a concussion, you will appreciate just how serious and long-term its effects can be. Concussion in sport is such a critical issue that the government produced an action plan in late 2021 to address it.

While there’s been plenty in the news about concussion in football and rugby, it has often been less widely acknowledged in equestrianism. However, a new six-page guidance document from British Equestrian, developed by its World Class Programme Human Sports Science and Medicine team, aims to help people recognise concussion and know what actions to take in the immediate aftermath and during recovery.

Concussion is an injury to the brain resulting in a disturbance of brain function. The guidance explains this can be caused by a direct blow to the head, but can also occur when a blow to another part of the body results in rapid movement of the head, such as whiplash type injuries. does not always occur – in fact, it occurs in less than 10% of concussions. While helmets save lives, concussions can still occur and can threaten the long-term health of participants, says British Equestrian.

For UK-based hat manufacturer Charles Owen, understanding more about concussion and brain health is crucial. It has been part of a group which has previously supported 10-13 PhD projects in the area, with research results driving ongoing safety improvements. It is currently co-sponsoring two students at Cardiff University with the NFL looking at sub-concussion in sport, explains university research leader, Dr Peter Theobald.

“The brain is surrounded by a thin layer of fluid within the skull, meaning that it is effectively floating and so may collide with the inside of the brain during a head impact.

“We are using a World-leading MRI scanner to investigate whether low-energy head impacts – achieved by heading a football – causes any change in the brain

microstructure. By collecting data before and after the heading, we mathematically compare the images to determine whether there have been any changes to the nerve fibres, microscopic structures that are critical for effective brain function.

“We also use these data to build brain models within a computer environment, such that we can then simulate more severe impacts – like equestrian falls, and be confident in our predicted injury severity. This provides a unique and highly valuable ‘test bed’ for us to design high quality, high performance equestrian hats,” says Dr Theobald.

Matt Stewart, head of innovation at Charles Owen, says that changes in the brain fluid from a sub-concussive injury can still be present months later, and this type of research will help drive forward safety standards for everyone in the sector. He has also co-authored scientific research papers looking at issues such as improving current testing methods to make them more ‘real-life’ relevant. He also sits on industry committees, and explains that manufacturers are actively looking at technology and developments in sports such as cycling and skiing.

Champion, which also works with Cardiff University and other international research groups, says it looks at various sports, such as cycling and skiing, for inspiration and technological innovation. “However, not all developments can be used directly due to the requirements of equestrian standards that do not have a parallel in other sports,” it says.

storage of user information, and recoverable helmet liners such as Koroyd.” This is a material currently used in ski and sailing helmets which crumples instantly and consistently on impact says its manufacturer, absorbing maximum force in a controlled manner, minimising energy transferred to your head. It is not currently used in equestrian sports.

One of the technologies which is gathering pace in equestrian helmets, MIPS, has been popular in cycling helmets for some years. MIPS – which stands for Multi-Directional Impact Protection System – is designed to help reduce the brain’s rotation during a fall. An extra shell or layer between the hat’s shell and padding redistributes impacts to help protect the skull and brain.

MIPS is available in helmets from a range of manufacturers, including Champion, Charles Owen and Uvex, while Shires says it is currently in discussions about adding the technology to its helmets, which will include a new Ellipse range launching in June.

With growing recognition about the importance of protection from rotational impact, Matt Stewart adds that there are new technologies appearing now which will provide a similar function; several manufacturers are looking at these.

Measuring rotation impact has inspired Italian manufacturer KASK to develop its own test. This is based on a motorcycle helmet standard, and involves an angled anvil hitting the helmet at 6m/s at various points. It says the findings from this have played a pivotal role in how it integrates new materials and technologies into its helmets. Performed at the Newton Lab – a certified testing laboratory in Milan – the KASK Rotational Impact WG11 Test draws from the research of industry experts and academics to improve the way helmets are assessed against rotational forces.

well-known in snowsports and cycling, and KASK is also providing helmets for the Ineos Americas Cup sailing team.

A background in sport – through cycling – is where a new equestrian helmet brand has come from. Abus, which is a family-owned business based in Germany, is one of the world’s largest cycle helmet manufacturers, and is about to launch two new models in the UK market in conjunction with Pikeur.

Marc von Dunten, head of quality and research at Abus, explains that it has its own development and testing lab for helmets, as well as working closely with professionals in cycling, and now riding, including Olympic Champion Jessica von Bredow-Werndl. Feedback from people who are wearing helmets for six plus hours per day has helped develop all of its helmets, he says. He adds that its equestrian helmet is one of few which fulfils all safety standard requirements, and it has made a point of producing a

deeper helmet to protect more of the head, something which it has done for many of its cycle helmets. Its Air Duo riding hat, which has a removable peak, doubles as a cycle helmet. Monty Stuart-Monteith of Shaws Equestrian, the UK Pikeur distributor, says he believes the UK market is one where people are more safety aware. He cites the 2012 Olympic dressage and the rule change from wearing top hats to safety helmets as an ‘extraordinary move’ which helped increase awareness of the importance of wearing safe headwear.

Charles Owen’s Matt Stewart believes manufacturers are striving for one thing; “Ultimately, we are all trying to make a safer helmet.”

CHOOSING A HAT

It is easy to become a bit confused by changing safety standards, and although a new EN1384 standard is due to be agreed and is likely to supercede the VG1 European standard, Charles Owen, Champion and Shires believe anyone looking for a new hat should opt for one certified to PAS015.

“We feel this is the best equestrian standard on the market,” says Champion. “We would also urge people to consider helmets with MIPS as this technology can increase the performance of a helmet,” it adds.

Matt Stewart says he believes opting for a helmet with three safety standards will give the optimum safety coverage as the criteria and thresholds are slightly different for each one.

Getting it professionally fitted is also essential. “A well-fitting helmet is so much safer. A loose one can expose the front or back of your head, or break your nose. They also need to be buckled up.”

Darren

Every horse is an individual and even if you have two or more horses in your yard at a similar stage in their training, they can require very different approaches. Both Ed and Buck did prelim and novice plus five-year-old classes in 2022, and after a yard move and a bit of downtime with a virus will go out at elementary this year.

Ed can lack confidence and be a bit spooky, while Buck is a different type of horse, a bit sharper. Buck won the five-year-old class at Hickstead, but we gave the semi-final

a miss as he’s a ‘one person horse’ and they are ridden by a judge in the final.

How much I do with them depends on the horse – Ed had lots of outings as a five-year-old as he got better the more he went out. Going to ‘stay away shows’ certainly improved his confidence.

The work programme starts with an easy stretchy day on a Monday, then a more intensive work session on Tuesday, followed by a hack on Wednesday. Then it’s back in the school on Thursday and Friday before another hack on Saturday.

I like to get out on the hills around the yard and take them on the gallops; they are probably fitter than most people’s young horses but that’s partly my eventing background.

I aim to ride them for about 45 minutes with 10 mins walking at the start and finish and I’d probably work through three different exercises with them.

If it’s a cold or windy day, you probably need to move on and have a trot quite early, but where possible I’ll do a lot of exercises in walk – rein back, walk pirouette, turn on the forehand – to make them supple and get them off the leg. It’s tempting to go rushing around on a young horse, especially if they are a bit sharp, but it’s our job to teach them to use their energy in a positive way.

ED

Ed can sit behind the bridle. We do a lot of on and back and lateral work to get him to go more into the bridle.

I want him to use the base of his neck as he can easily be too short and choppy in his stride. The aim is for a bigger reach, not a quicker rhythm.

Leg yield along the wall encourages him to reach more with his front legs rather than staying in the same trot.

His canter is pretty good, certainly more adjustable, but when I ask him to collect, he goes hollow, using his neck for balance. Lots of 10m circles, counter canter and changes of rein help with this. I’ll also tap the top of the quarters with my whip to encourage him to step under with his hind legs.

BUCK

I will often start Buck with rein back in hand, which encourages softness and suppleness from the beginning.

With him I work more on the canter to try to keep him connected –I want to be able to put his neck down and pick it up again.

When he gets too quick, he’s reluctant to let his rider help him. If you hang on to him, he just gets quicker – he’s very powerful and just doesn’t know how to control it.

With a horse like this it’s tempting to avoid training the canter and work on something else in the hope that will improve it, or just to canter round and round.

Riding a loop on the diagonal encourages him to slow himself down and avoids him locking on in one direction, while a small circle in the corner before heading back onto the diagonal helps to keep the canter connected. Working in quarters in up the long side helps to get more separation between the hind legs and encourages him to take more time in the stride.

MOVING ON FROM NOVICE

Other than generally improving the horse’s way of going there’s not too much of a step up from novice to elementary. Simple changes come in, along with rein back.

VARYING THE WORK

As well as hacking, I’ll vary the training with ground work. I like to long rein rather than lunge as the double line helps to keep them working correctly rather than just galloping round you. Youngsters come out with a lot of energy but can quickly get tired. If they do the exercises well, take positives from the training session and start to cool down; they will tell you when they are ready. Just be aware of the amount of time that you are on them, given that you need to walk, stretch and assess them before the training starts, and stretch and cool down afterwards. Also consider what they have done the day before and how fit they are.

– approach them in the same way as normal and don’t focus on the issues you had before. Think about their suppleness and how to be better right from the start.

PREPARING FOR COMPETITION

Make sure you have worked them in the size of arena that you will be competing in – if you normally use a large school it can come as a surprise! I practice the centre lines and some test movements, but keep the warm up and cool down the same.

BUILDING ON SUCCESS

After the nationals I like to give my horses a couple of weeks hacking, but then keep them ticking over and conditioned. It’s a good time for stretching and suppling, working on core strength. You don’t need to turn horses away for a full break – a change of emphasis in their work can be highly positive, however.

Microcurrent makes waves

A treatment with its origins in ancient civilisations is being developed to offer a form of drug-free pain relief for humans, horses and other animals.

The use of bioelectrical stimulation to treat pain and medical disorders goes way back in human history. In 2750 BC, the ancient Egyptians and Romans were using ‘electric’ fish to relieve pain. From the 17th century onwards, the use of electrical charges in medicine has been regularly documented.

Technology moves apace and from the 1980s onwards, worldwide research into bioelectronic stimulation has developed rapidly. Microcurrent stimulation (MCS) uses a very low current, usually between 1uA and 1000uA (millionths of an ampere) and is thought to work at a cellular level to reduce pain. As yet, it’s unclear exactly how MCS works in practice, but a number of studies have demonstrated that it can have an impact on pain management and can have anti-inflammatory benefits.

Rick Rowan founded London-based NuroKor Bioelectronics, a multinational medical device company, in 2018. NuroKor is pioneering the application of bioelectronic technology for the management of pain, physical recovery, and

transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) device by his therapist.

Being scientifically-minded he tried to understand what it was doing, and why it sometimes worked and why other times it didn’t.

He noticed in his research that there were various frequencies being used and there was no cohesion as to how the studies were done. He started to ask questions about combining frequencies to increase efficacy. As he and his team got better at identifying useful protocols for application, the formulae improved, and more customers were reporting impressive results.

Rick had been disappointed by the lack of natural, nonpharmaceutical pain relief available from his vet for Tank, the family dog.

Tank was suffering with arthritis and inflammation, so Rick decided to try his own NuroKor technology and saw improvement within two weeks.

There is always more research into treatments for human health conditions with animal studies lagging behind, but equine species serve as translational models in the context of wound care, with research into equine microcurrent benefiting from human studies and vice versa.1

In November 2022, NuroKor launched EquiPod equine microcurrent technology.

EQUIPOD

EquiPod utilises the NuroKor signature microcurrent stimulation, to provide a non-invasive form of treatment to address a diverse range of equine injuries and conditions.

With microcurrent stimulation (MCS), there are many different electrical and waveform parameters that can be adapted, controlled and formulated for certain purposes and intended outcomes. There are variations in current amplitude and most devices utilise a current between 0-500 microamps (µA). One of the most significant factors which has been shown to induce some of the different therapeutic effects of microcurrent is the frequency (hz).

Over the past few decades, the benefits of different frequencies have been widely reported within the international frequency-specific microcurrent movement, and across a range of published papers and scientific literature.

Despite this, most pre-programmed microcurrent devices only provide single frequency microcurrent. This means, while there are changes in the current amplitude, all other parameters, including the frequency, remain the same. This can limit personalisation of treatment and explains why single frequency microcurrent will only work for some horses, some of the time.

The EquiPod device (hardware) is paired with a mobile phone app, providing the delivery mechanism for the microcurrent treatment programmes. Accessories, including a KorBand for the body or KorWrap for legs, are used to situate the device in the correct place for treatment. Each programme has been developed for specific intended outcomes and to directly target the affected area or injury, and is formulated using specific waveforms, current levels and frequencies.

NuroKor medical science director Dr Irem Tezer Ates, who has more than 15 years of international experience in research and clinical treatments, including real world clinical experience in electrical stimulation with pain and wounds, has conducted research to establish which frequencies yield particular benefits and these have been sequentially formulated into treatment programmes. Dr Irem carried out a small study (just over 100 people) in 2021 and found that 100% got pain relief from using the NuroKor device.

Veterinarian Carole Holland D.V.M, C.V.A from Wellington, Florida comments: “The EquiPod has been effective for back pain during competition when drugs aren’t allowed. I’ve also recommended it to several clients to use on suspensory ligament disease during recovery and it’s been very helpful.”

While the EquiPod brand is still in its infancy, the research into MCS in the human field is established globally2. EquiPod is currently investing in conducting small controlled equine studies for primary uses and indications, and plans to facilitate independently run equine studies intended for publication in 2023-2024.

Competition clothing has to follow specific rules to meet the high standards expected of dressage. Yet there is some room for freedom of expression, while modern fabrics and design are befitting of a 21st century sport, reports Jane

Jackets make a competition outfit and can flatter and enhance a rider’s physique while highlighting their position in the saddle.

Colours are required to be ‘muted’ but this is open to some interpretation.

“Beautiful and varied colour options for competition jackets have been introduced to the market lately,” comments Claire Hubbard of specialist supplier The Centre Line. “Riders have been making style statements with contrast piping and collars, unique linings, and beautiful buttons with Swarovski crystals. Carl Hester has recently opted

for a striking blue Lotus Romeo tailcoat with elegant grey and silver piping, which really set the standard for the season.”

We’re all familiar with the saying ‘no foot, no horse’ so how can we ensure our dressage horses’ feet are being well-maintained for soundness and longevity?

From ensuring the correct hoof balance to maintaining an appropriate diet and management routine for optimal hoof health, there’s a lot to consider when caring for our dressage horses’ feet.

You get a lot of warmblood types in dressage which tend to be heavier in build, which can create more stress on the hoof capsule and internal structures. Warmblood feet tend to be upright in shape, which creates various issues such as an inability to absorb and disperse concussive forces, which can in turn create pathological changes within the foot and lower limb. The heel area can also become contracted and very deep causing the frog to retract, which is then hard to keep clean.

With many dressage horses being kept stabled a lot, especially during the winter months, high levels of bacteria can cause thrush and white line disease. Once it gets deep into the central cleft of the frog it can cause the bulbs of the heels to sheer which can get really sore and hard to treat. It is important for us to keep the frogs and solar surface well-trimmed so the air can reach the area. A clean dry stable environment is also important. Hypozin, which your farrier can get, is a good product to treat thrush and sore heels to dry the area out.

QWhat are the most common issues you see in dressage horses’ feet?

Problems with foot balance and hoof cracks due to conformation. If a horse has a conformational deviation, it means that the hoof capsule will adapt to compensate, and this can result in medial lateral imbalance, anterior palmar deviation and tight upright feet which are more prone to quarter cracks. This is because there isn’t enough space within the hoof capsule for the lateral cartilage, when deformation of the hoof

capsule is taking place during locomotion, the cartilage is pushing on the coronary band. It is quite common for dressage horses with an upright hoof conformation to blow and burst quarter cracks.

QWhat is your advice for owners?

We like to work holistically with the vet, physio and horse owner so that if there is an issue, we can put a shoeing plan together. It’s the owner’s job to pull us together so we can share information and offer as much as we can for the horse and rider.

All horses have movements that they are better at and some they find hard and what we are all guilty of is practicing things they are not good at a lot so we start creating issues by repetitive forces going through the limb. There could be a good reason why they’re not able to perform that movement, whether they’re not strong enough or their shoe placement isn’t quite right and they can’t support themselves in the movement. This is when you need a holistic approach to these movements rather than practicing this movement again and again and again. You often find they get sorer and sorer.

It’s healthy for horses to hack out as well as go in the arena as it gets the blood moving around the limb and hoof, and is good for allround well-being.

QHow do arena surfaces impact a dressage horse’s feet?

Most modern surfaces are really good but it’s how the owner or yard maintains the surface which is really important because horses can get injuries from an inconsistent surface. Deep surfaces can cause abrasion, especially if you have a horse with a low arc of flight in the hindlimb due to a hock injury – they drag their hoof through the surface which can be abrasive to the hoof wall.

Keeping surfaces consistent with regular watering in the summer and harrowing is really important.

QHow can you shoe to support a dressage horse?

Dressage training works to lift horses off their forehand and place all the weight on the hindquarters, so it’s the suspensory apparatus behind and the hocks that take all the weight. Ensuring the foot balance is correct allows it to support the suspensory apparatus.

It starts with looking at the horse dynamically and how they move so you can assess any limb deviations. You should never just pull a horse out of the stable and shoe it for how it stands in front of you.

The next key thing is the trim. We make sure we trim balanced and level to the limb. I see a lot of negative palmar processes in the hind feet because the horse is always sitting on its hocks and the fetlocks are overworked so they get low in the heel and grow more toe –

it’s important that we trim enough toe off to rebalance the foot for the next shoeing cycle.

The type of shoe we select is also important – if you have a client with a really deep, soft surface, we might need to put a wide shoe on to keep the horse on top of the surface so the stifles and hocks aren’t working really hard to pull the hoof out. For a consistent, firm surface you might have narrower shoes.

Then it’s shoe placement, so placing the shoe under the limb for support and width where the support is needed.

QShod or barefoot?

It depends on the individual horse and the client and environment. At the Tokyo Olympics, they didn’t have to walk on anything other than rubber matting or an arena surface, whereas in this country, horse’s feet are exposed to a multitude of substrates

and environmental conditions. Shoes are definitely an advantage where you can’t control what the horse walks or competes on. Otherwise the choice of whether to shoe is dependent on the horse’s foot and limb conformation.

Some people start horses off barefoot because they have good quality feet, and it’s only when they start teaching them more complex movements where they have to support themselves on one limb or lateral movements that shoes really give a performance advantage and increase the longevity of the horse. Shoes also give us the ability to place the platform where it is needed and increase the footprint of the horse.

There are also benefits of not having shoes on and in some cases, the best option is to remove the shoe and turn the horse out to start again with a blank canvas. Bacteria can also gather under a shoe and create poor horn quality and thrush.

do dressage movements impact horses’ feet?

QHow

Surfaces are really grippy which is why we will use a wide, flat shoe to encourage a certain amount of slide reducing concussive forces going through the limb.

In horses that are worked on tight circles and perform lateral work, there is an element of medial lateral torque on the joints, ligaments and tendons. If you’ve got a horse with a preexisting injury or a limb deviation you might want to fit an omnidirectional shoe (with edges taken off it) so when they are doing circles or bends there is less medial lateral torque on the coffin joint and ligaments and tendons. This means it doesn’t take much force for the horse to break over and go into the flight pattern.

QWhat supplements and hoof dressings should I use?

Nothing can substitute a good balanced diet. Dressage horses are often fed a lot of nutrients for condition and muscle development, so they lay down a lot of hoof growth which is why it’s important they are kept on a shorter shoeing cycle so we’re able to maintain good foot balance, particularly in the summer months: we recommend 4-5 weeks. It can also be dependent on the breed. Thoroughbreds generally don’t lay down as much horn whereas breeds like warmbloods will produce more.

There are some cases where horses produce poor quality horn due to a lack of a nutrient. Vitamin E is a keratin-building ingredient, and a certain amount of biotin, zinc and copper are needed for good hoof health. Zinc deficiency is linked to slow hoof growth and copper deficiency is often seen in fractious horn which is more suspectable to thrush and bacteria.

We generally see feet break down in the summer months, which is due to faster growth and hooves being exposed to wet and dry conditions. The lower third of the hoof capsule, from the nails down, starts to break up and you’re more likely to get risen clenches. In those situations, topical hoof dressings are a good idea because they help to control the hoof moisture content within the hoof capsule.

QWhat are the recent advances in shoeing

The biggest advance in the past 10 years is having access to the latest technology and materials which can help with a specific injury or pathology.

Modern lines of communication with owners and vets mean it’s easy for us to take a video and send it to someone to get their opinion or get reports to deal with issues much faster, including x-rays and MRI.

Gait analysis systems are fantastic and now more widely available– they don’t tell us how to shoe the horse but it gives us information that we can use in our shoeing plan and clarification that we have made the right call.

Atrusted trainer can unlock the potential in a horse-rider partnership and fine-tune your performance, helping you to bring your ‘A’ game to the competition arena. Quality coaching is often the key to success, but how can you make the most of the professional help you’re paying for?

Alison Short, a BDCC Level 3 Accredited Coach and BD Youth Coach and Assessor, offers advice.

1 PLAN AHEAD

“Take a strategic approach to lesson planning,” says Alison. “Rather than cramming a coaching session into any available window, prioritise sufficient time and headspace. If there’s a stressful date on the calendar involving heavy work commitments or the school run, the dentist, the weekly shop and more, don’t book a lesson on that day. An important part of a healthy mindset is self-compassion. Feeling like a failure for being five minutes late won’t set the scene for a productive session, so identify those hectic times and give your horse a day off or pop him on the lunge instead.”

2 JUST BREATHE

“We’re accustomed to everything in an instant in our busy modern lives, but ‘instant’ doesn’t work with horses. They soon pick up on our emotions and sense if we’re too quick, sharp or demanding, so we must find ways of controlling our own mindbody connection and reducing our heart rate or anxiety.

“As the rider, you’re the channel between the coach and your horse. This means being in touch with yourself and fully tuned in to how your horse is feeling. Arrive ready to train by allowing a few minutes before the lesson for some breath work or relaxation, perhaps using an app for guidance.”

IDENTIFY YOUR STYLE

“Choose a regular coach you can gel with. The right trainer will identify your style of learning and deliver instruction in a clear and confident way and discuss with

you why you’re doing something. But a trainer who only talks at you, rather than asking what you feel, may not bring out the best in your performance. Work out what works for you.

“If you struggle with self-belief, a trainer who relies on negative criticism is not ideal. There is an element of needing to leave your baggage at home, but if you’re going into your lessons with 100% commitment to listening and being open-minded and they’re getting frustrated with your progress, maybe they don’t have the skills to coach you.”

BE FLEXIBLE

“While goal setting can be useful, make a flexible plan rather than giving yourself training targets that put you under duress. Instead of aiming for percentages and wins, identify three things important to you that season, such as achieving feel or rhythm. That can take you a long way up the leaderboard.”

5 DIAL DOWN THE TENSION

“A safe training space is the perfect environment for exploring tension. Try tensing your whole body then slowly counting back from 10, releasing the tension until every part is in the right state. The aim is a balance of core control and fluidity.

“Make a habit of checking in on your tension levels, wherever you are. A good trick is to think of yourself as a thermostat with a dial. If your stress level is 10 and it doesn’t need to be, dial it down to something more appropriate.”

6 BE HONEST

“Building trust goes beyond training, as a good coach will be supportive if issues outside of riding are affecting your performance. While you can’t expect them to be available on the other end of the phone in the middle of the night, ideally you’ll feel that you can ask them any question and discuss your confidence levels.

“Tell your trainer about any specific learning needs, disabilities or mobility issues and don’t be afraid to request something less challenging if you’re feeling under par on a certain day.”

7 EMBRACE THE CHALLENGE

“If you’re being challenged by your coach, you’re in the ‘highest learning zone’. That’s good, but not necessarily mid-competition season. The state of flow – the optimum level of focus and total absorption where the task in hand seems effortless – only comes when you’re operating within your comfort zone.

“Being challenged will push up your heart and respiratory rate, so don’t compete at that level during a particularly testing training phase. Similarly, avoid scheduling a clinic with a visiting

coach before a competition. If they make fundamental change, you’ll need time to re-adjust on home ground without the additional pressure of being judged.”

8 DO YOUR HOMEWORK

“Use the time between lessons to try bonding groundwork techniques such as in-hand work and mirroring. Hire different venues with friends for training and rehearse your warm-up plan in the run-up to a show, but avoid too much test riding in case you compound any problems without the guidance of your coach.

“Work on your own mind-body control, perhaps with positive visualisation, yoga or journaling, where you write down your thoughts and feelings to understand them more clearly. With more understanding and self-compassion, you’ll then find it easier to make that tranquil connection with your horse.”

CASE STUDY SOLID FOUNDATIONS

“Before tacking up I spend a few minutes in the lorry with my horse, having a cuddle and a scratch, so we go out there as a team,” says Sarah Oram, describing the pre-lesson routine she builds in prior to coaching sessions with Alison. “If you’re flustered and not together with your horse when you get on, you won’t work together. I take that time to chill out and breathe, even if it makes me five minutes late for the lesson.”

Sarah finds the technique invaluable with her seasoned para campaigner Tamrik Captain Jack Sparrow, now winning at Medium, and even more so with her five-yearold Total US gelding Mylano.

“My youngster is such a handful that I need that grounding time before we start,” she adds.

“No matter what might have happened at the yard or on the way, it helps me settle my breathing and make that connection with him. And with Jack, before a competition, it gives me the chance to get my game face on.”

JUDGE TRAINING

For 2023 Annual CPD requirements for judges, from 1 April 2023 onwards judges must attend a FULL formal training day from the options below only. Judges are required to attend training at a relevant level, and have until 1 April 2024 to fulfil this full day training requirement.

*A half Module 4 day can be attended alongside an online collectives training or online freestyle training (due to launch in the up-and-coming months) to fulfil the full day requirement. Two separate half Module 4 days can also be used to fulfil the full day requirement.

Small sitting-in training sessions across the regions can be used towards one sitting-in sign off for judges registered for the new system. Judges can also attend these for their own development but are not permitted to use this towards CPD requirements.

General Zoom judge training sessions can be attended for development but are not permitted to be used towards annual CPD.

Applications for the 2023 Foundation Academies opened on 01 May 2023. If you’re a B, B+ or A Squad rider, competing consistently and meeting a minimum performance standard of 66% at Elementary level, this could be for you! Applications are also welcomed from athletes competing at higher levels or on young horses at a standard appropriate to the horse’s age and stage.

MEET Ben Grose

As a BD Youth Rep for the South & East region, Ben Grose plays an instrumental role in supporting young enthusiasts as they set out on their dressage pathway. Since his appointment into this voluntary role in 2022, Ben has worked to help make the region’s youth programme successful, educational and fun. We caught up with Ben who lives near Norwich in Norfolk with his wife Ruth, children Albert and Barnaby, four ponies and two dogs.

QWhenwere you first introduced to horses?

My mother always had ponies that she kept at a local livery yard when I was growing up, I think I first sat on a pony when I was about three years old. Growing up I wasn’t interested in playing football, I immediately had a passion for horses and I wanted to go the yard instead! When I was eight we went for carriage driving lessons and it was at this point I decided that I preferred sitting behind the horse rather than on top!

QTellus about your own equestrian life.

Having found a love for carriage driving I worked my way up through the British Young Carriage Drivers competing in Horse Driving Trials.

After leaving college I was working as a groom mucking out stables at a couple of dressage yards. I genuinely was in awe of these people who can make the horse do these wonderful movements and it looked effortless, but in my mind this world seemed very out of reach!

I moved to Essex and I developed a small carriage driving business. I was teaching, breaking, selling, working on film sets, driving funerals in London with the Friesian stallions and desperately looking for anyone that was willing to help me financially! However, the hard work paid off and I was lucky enough to compete for Great Britain in 2012 in Portugal.

QHave you competed in dressage yourself?

Ruth bought Watson, a Welsh D yearling, for my birthday. Fast forward four years and life moved us to Norwich where we bought a small equestrian property. Starting at the bottom and working my way up is a welltrodden path for me, so I thought: let’s try dressage and learn how they do it. We are going to start competing at Novice this season, but I have high aspirations so let’s see where the journey takes us!

QWhat led to your appointment as Youth Rep?

I saw a video on social media asking for people to get involved and I just thought, that’s something I can do! I can’t do a half pass yet, but I understand the mechanics of trying to build a platform for people to join. I also understand the relationship between children and parents as I have been there and am just about to go through it with my two children.

QBriefly describe what the role involves.

I am the go-to contact for new youth riders wanting to get involved in British Dressage in East Anglia. I want to try and make it as accessible as possible for people. I truly believe you need to look after all the levels from top to bottom, but the bottom is where the foundations are laid!

QYour favourite way to spend a day off?

My life is quite full on. If we aren’t competing and training I am working, taking a child to a swimming lesson or a birthday party or relaxing with friends in a garden. We don’t really have days off, but life is about balance and right now that balance feels pretty good!
