Welcome to the biggest dressage show in Britain, the NAF Five Star Winter Championships, which is hosted for the first time at Addington Equestrian.

We’re all set for five days of top-class competition as we celebrate the achievements of our riders, from amateurs to elite level. With over 1,000 competitors going down the centre line this week, the NAF Five Star Winter Championships capture the real essence of our sport. By the end of the week we’ll have crowned 44 new champions, from Preliminary to Intermediate I, proving that dressage is truly for all.

We are extremely grateful for the loyal support we receive from NAF and Petplan –their generous contribution makes this five-day fixture possible, alongside all our class sponsors. We couldn’t do a show of this magnitude without the support of our valued sponsors, so a huge thank you from all of us at British Dressage.

This year also marks 25 years of Petplan support for the Area Festivals, we’re proud to reach this landmark with a long-term partner who has been dedicated to promoting the growth and development of our largest grassroots series for almost as many years as British Dressage has been in existence. Now with two seasons and two fantastic championship finales, the Petplan Area Festival Series remains a much-loved and popular opportunity for BD members.

I would also like to take this opportunity to express our thanks and appreciation to Kelvin Bywater and his team at Show Direct, who have worked tireless to bring the Winter Championships to a new venue and ensure that the event continues to provide a great experience for all visitors. Whether you’re a competitor, owner, sponsor, official or supporter at the NAF Five Star Winter Championships, we wish you a successful and enjoyable show, and hope that memories will be made that last a lifetime.

Best wishes,

British Dressage welcome

A year on Davy Harvey

We caught up with Davy Harvey a year on from his impressive treble at last year’s NAF Five Star Winter Championships.

The 2023 edition of the NAF Five Star Winter Championships was a huge success for Davy Harvey, who made an impact at the show securing not only his first-ever Winter Championship title, but also by walking away with a memorable hat-

trick. This, along with some strong CDI small tour results, unquestionably put him on the radar as one to watch for the future.

Having won the prestigious Superflex Intermediate I Gold with Judy Peploe’s British-bred Hawtins Rossana (Rubin Royal x Werther), he went on to scoop an Advanced Medium double when winning the Equitex Advanced Medium Gold and Nupafeed Advanced

Medium Freestyle Gold aboard 10-year-old Diamond Blue (by Don Frederic), also owned by Judy, and bred here in the UK by Darren Matthia and Rosie Moreton-Deakin.

The Wiltshire-based 29-year-old, who grew up in the Orkney Islands, was based at Pammy Hutton’s Talland School of Equitation, where his dressage career was set in motion, before setting up on his own.

A year on

How does it feel to have won three titles last year?

It was bit of a whirlwind, but it was incredible. I do have a tendency to think about all things we can’t do, rather than the things we can do – I’m the party pooper of the team! - but I have a very positive team around me. We all have our personal goals, which is not necessarily winning or being placed. Being pleased with the horses and knowing we’re on the right track with the training is the most important thing for me; however, good results bring great joy and motivation. It’s a long old winter, and it spurs you on to be even better.

What are your reflections on the past 12 months?

I feel very lucky that I have Carl (Hester) steering me. I have learned a lot about training the horses in the past 12 months. I trundle over to Carl’s before an important show, for example a Regionals, and whereas a couple of years ago I would have been hyper focused, Carl is always looking at the bigger picture long-term. So now I think, “What is my end goal?” And that it was I look at every day. A mistake before would have been the end of the world. Carl has steered me to look at the end goal and put in the building blocks to work towards that. I feel that’s the biggest thing I’ve learned.

Having won at last year’s Championships, has it changed your mindset at all when it comes to competing?

I’m very lucky in that I don’t suffer from nerves. I’m a very steady person and put the pressure on myself in the preparation rather than at a competition. I tell myself, “If I’ve prepared as best I can, then what happens in there happens.” I go in and ride what I’ve got on the day and make sure I’ve done the prep. My partner gets frustrated with me as he thinks I should be much more competitive and not so laid back.

How do you deal with riding multiple tests?

I don’t want to jinx myself, but again it goes back to that preparation. Even a month ahead, I look at the tests and vaguely have them in the back of my head all the time I’m training.

What are your plans for Hawtins Rossana and Diamond Blue?

Rossana is just continuing her training. It was great to do our first Grand Prix recently. Again, that’s thanks to Carl. We never thought she’d be able to do Grand Prix, mentally, as she’s so hot, but she cruised round the test happily. With Diamond Blue, we’re focusing on Addington and Hickstead Premier Leagues, and hopefully some CDIs.

What other promising horses do you have in the stables at home?

I’m hoping to get my own horse, Hercules (Foundation x Royal Diamond), out at Small Tour this year. And MFS Cayden HH (Contender x Caretino), owned by Caroline and Gordon Ironside – hopefully he’ll do Addington or Hickstead Premier League. Judy has another

A year on

Hawtins horse, eight-year-old Hawtins Letizia (Londontime x Dimaggio). She is very nice, and we’re very excited about her. It will be fun to see where she is at the end of the year.

Then there’s a couple of much younger ones for the future.

What horses are you bringing to this year’s Winter Championships.

We have Benefit, an eight-year-old by Belantis, qualified for the Elementary Gold and Elementary Freestyle Gold. He is also owned by Judy. He’s green, but he’s very sweet. I had him in to sell, but we liked him so much that Judy bought him. He’s not big moving,

but he loves to work and he’s pleasant to ride.

What do the Winter Championships mean to you?

I think the Winter Championships are really important for us British dressage riders. We have such horrid winterswe suffer through the wind and rain - so it’s important to have the goals of the Regionals and Winter Championships. It’s on the turn of when the weather is improving and it’s a real morale boost. It’s always full of people for the prize-givings and freestyle tests - it’s such a buzz - so a really good experience for the horses. It will be exciting to experience the Championships at their new home of Addington EC.

Proud Peploe

Judy Peploe has been a prolific owner, contributing much to British Dressage and enjoying the experience.

Speaking about her highlights as an owner she said, “There have been so many highlights. My first introduction to big shows was with Super Blue, who opened so many doors, with memorable trips toSaumur, Deauville and Le Mans. He’s now happily retired.

Last year’s Winter Championships was amazing for the whole team. It was like a dream. Davy was well prepared and when he asked the horses to up their game, they willingly responded.

The real highlight is what goes on at home – watching Davy train the horses daily and seeing them develop. Theendless care and attention of our home team, and the relationships with the wider team, farrier, vet and physio.

We’re so lucky to have Carl Hester train us and share his wisdom, he’s a highlight too.”

How to follow

The Petplan Connection

The NAF Five Star Winter Championships play host not only to the grand finale of the winter regional season, but also see the Petplan Area Festival Winter series take centre stage with the championships taking place under the same roof.

The Petplan Area Festivals have been the launch pad for countless great combinations and provide the perfect introduction to championship competition. We caught up with a handful of riders who made the move from Festivals to Five Star in 2024, achieving their qualification ticket to ride at the Championships.

Lola Rega

Amy 13

I have had ‘Marisol’ since 2019, she was six and very green when I got her.

After coming from such fun at the BD Quest finals, in 2022 I competed in my first Area Festival at Hartpury and we managed to become U21 Prelim Bronze Champions after being placed highest U21 at the Parwood Area Festivals. We also qualified first for the Summer Area Festival Prelim Silver at Wellington leading us to come fourth at the Championship.

At the end of 2022 and 2023 Marisol had to have surgery on a sarcoid that was by her eye, this had us out of action for several months.

However, we bounced back and gained a qualification to the AF Novice Bronze Freestyle. After being wildcarded in we managed to come fifth with one judge having us in first place! I was pretty proud of this after being wildcarded in.

Fast forward to this year, we gained qualification for the AF U21 Novice Silver Championship and then came the Regionals. We went for the Prelim Silver Regionals at Wellington. I was not expecting to qualify as it was our first ever time (I was aiming for top 10). Marisol gave me a flowing, relaxed ride and we managed to come fourth on 69.71%.

I was super proud as my pony managed to score a great score against some amazing horses. We managed to get a wildcard for this so we are

going to our first NAF Prelim Silver Championships!!

As you can imagine, I am super proud of this pony and she has done more than I could have ever imagined.

I’ll also add that the AF introduced us to the world of proper BD and then led us to get into the youth squad so it’s a great programme to get youth and amateur riders into an amazing championship! It also led me to the regionals which I never thought would be possible due to there being a lot of amazing horses and professionals. I must admit I was intimidated at first but I had so much fun at the regionals and I cannot wait for the nationals.

The Petplan Connection

I wanted to introduce you to my wonderful mare Hillgrounds Woleena, aka ‘Spice’.

I have owned Spice since she was an unbacked three year old. I bought her from a lovely British breeder in Devon, Clare Skinner.

We have previously competed at four Petplan championships at Novice, Medium twice and Advanced Medium over the past few years.

The last few years have been a bit stop start for us while I had my two children, now four and two, but Spice has come back stronger after each break.

We have competed at a few regionals over the years but for various reasons, it’s just never come together on the day for us.

We have had a stressful year with Spice! She had a serious stomach impaction last May and we came quite close to losing her. Then the week before the Petplan Summer Champs she came down with a virus, spent a week in the vets and we very nearly didn’t make it there. Fortunately our vets were amazing and got her back to health just in time.

So after all that stress, I wanted to have some fun with the music classes over the winter and entered Onley Regionals in the Medium straight and music. We came a respectable eight in a hot

straight class but danced our way to second place in the music gaining that wonderful golden ticket to nationals! I practiced riding our final centre line in extended trot one handed and I hadn’t decided until I turned down in the test whether I would or not but I figured go hard or go home right? And it certainly paid off! The judges seemed to love it.

She has most recently been diagnosed with EMS too so we are battling that with a combination of diet changes and increased exercise. However she seems to be going better than ever so I’m so excited to attend our first NAF Winter Championships and just enjoy every second dancing with her while I can.

My name is Lucy Hainsworth and I’ve been riding my connemara gelding, Gurteen Freddie, at British Dressage competitions for three years now.

After starting our partnership eventing, after COVID-19 we began doing pure dressage together. We began our British Dressage journey at prelim level without knowing much about the different championships, and managed to qualify for our first Summer Area Festival in 2022, by accident, where we came

third. After this, I began to aim to qualify for the Winter Area Festivals again, in the hopes of one day being able to get to the championships.

In 2023, my dream came true and we received a wildcard for the Area Festival Championships at Hartpury, where we came 13th. This was one of my goals within my dressage career, and I was so proud to have achieved it. Whilst I was there, I watched the prelim class in the NAF Five Star Winter Championships, and realised this was my next goal. This year, I managed to achieve that after coming fifth at the Regional finals, and receiving a

wildcard for the Winter Championships.

I believe the Area Festivals were a perfect stepping stone into competing at British Dressage championships and has prepared me and my horse well for the atmosphere of the National Championships. The Area Festival system gave me the confidence to believe I could qualify for a championship and helped me make the step up to regionals.

I now aim with Freddie to qualify for the Area Festival championships at Novice level, and hopefully one day the National Championships.

The Petplan Connection

My name is Rachael Mosey and I currently ride and compete the fabulous Isle Valena, stable name Velvet owned by Ros and Bridget Tate.

I have been riding all my life, now 42 single mum of two wonderful children and new to British Dressage, this is my first competitive year. I currently have the opportunity to ride and compete the wonderful young, extremely talented and rather exuberant Velvet. Our goal was to gain competitive experience and hopefully qualify for the Petplan Championships at Novice Silver and Regional Championships at Prelim Silver. We have achieved our goal and headed off to the championships, first championships for us both and I had only been riding Velvet for five months prior to the Petplan Championship. The Petplan Area Festival was a brilliant experience and it gave us both confidence for the regionals. The aim at both championships was to get clean tests and a well behaved Velvet. We certainly achieved this winning both classes, both

Petplan Novice Silver and Regional Prelim Silver champions for 2024 earning our tickets to the nationals!

Velvet was bred by the Tate’s out of their mare ‘Hawkins Werona’ who competed successfully up to Inter 1 level. I am extremely happy and proud of what

Velvet and her team have achieved with the support of Bridget and Ros Tate and my parents, Roger and Marie Weeks without which none of this would have been possible. I am looking forward to our first experience of the national championships whatever it may bring.

The Petplan Area Festivals present year-round opportunities for riders competing up to Intermediate I Silver level to qualify for two seasonal championships.

Freestyles: Technical Talk

If you want to get creative with dressage, freestyle is the ultimate. It’s a chance to do more of what you and your horse love, play to your strengths and have fun. And while creating a floorplan can seem daunting, there’s plenty of help to get started.

Sara Green, Technical Delegate at the Winter Championships and master of making winning freestyle programmes, says the first step is to get a copy of the official BD test sheet for the level you wish to compete at. “This clearly lays out the compulsory movements, what you can do and what you mustn’t do.”

A visit to the BD website will also be helpful, as you can download and print freestyle floorplan templates for planning your tests, as well as reading the BD Guide to Dressage to Music.

Sara says, “The guide is applicable to everyone, so don’t be daunted when it talks about Grand Prix as the concept is the same at every level.”

Whilst there is occassionally an option to do freestyle in a 20x40m, most venues and all championships are in a 20x60m, so it is better to use the larger arena. Make sure any arena you use is the correct size as any

difference, even a metre or two, can have a huge effect when you compete in music. It’s also a good idea to practice on the type of surface you are likely to compete on; a deeper surface will ride more slowly than sand and wax, for instance.

When it comes to creating your test, Paralympian Sophie Wells advises looking at your horse’s strengths and weaknesses so you can highlight or disguise them, and thinking about any movements you particularly enjoy doing. “Think about the order of paces you want to ride. Is your horse’s trot better after canter? Should

The Brillante AS-X is an innovative dressage saddle featuring the exclusive AS-X technology, able to enhance the horse’s freedom of movement while a ording the rider maximum stability. Entirely made in Italy, it is available in double and mono flap versions.

you walk first if your horse needs settling? Be clever about what enhances your horse.”

“It’s not compulsory to do trot to halt in freestyle, so choose a pace you can do a good halt from – walk might be better, and the halts at the start and the end are worth 20 marks, so they are important.”

Freestyle at Prelim and Novice have a minimum time allowed of four movements and a maximum of five. This is timed from the move off after your first halt to your final halt, so entry to the arena is not included, making a walk entrance worth considering.

Sara creates floor plans by thinking about the trot work and canter separately. “Keep the paces together so that it doesn’t become too bitty. Work out what you are doing in trot, and then in canter and use walk to join them up. If you find you are not on the correct rein or end of the arena that you want to be at, you can be creative with half circles back to the track for instance.”

Floorplan symmetry and flow are important, as is making each movement very clear. Judges won’t know your test, and must ensure each compulsory movement is completed, says Sophie. “A symmetrical plan helps the judge anticipate what is coming next – if the test doesn’t flow they will be guessing. It’s good to make it exciting, but you don’t want to keep the judge on their toes wondering what they’ve just seen.”

Using the whole arena is key, and while the music is what determines where a transition occurs, rather than a marker as in ‘normal’ dressage, consider where you will make transitions to ensure they are not directly before or after compulsory movements in case you happen to be in front or behind your music on the day.

In a transition to canter, for example, Sara points out that planning this between M and C and then a 20m compulsory circle at C will not give much time to sort things out should your horse strike off on the wrong leg. It would be ‘safer’ to canter between M and C, and then have the 20m circle at S, for instance, so there is a second opportunity to get the correct lead between C and H without affecting a compulsory movement.

“At novice level, make the medium trot obvious, even if the horse isn’t that good at it. Don’t ride it coming

towards the judge –instead, go for a short diagonal where you can balance the horse round the corner, push them on across the diagonal and bring them back.”

Using the arena creatively, for instance, a diagonal line from the centre line or using the three-quarter line will give a point of difference, says Sophie.

Riders on ponies, which inevitably cover less ground than a large horse, may need to work quite hard to ensure all compulsory movements are covered in the time allowed, says Sara.

Once you have formulated a floorplan, find a 20x60m arena to practice in, and ask a friend to come and video it, ideally from C so you can see what the judge sees. Ride it a few times to ensure you are happy with it before getting the music done, says Sophie. “Also ask a friend or your trainer to ensure they can clearly identify your compulsory movements.”

Above all, both Sara and Sophie stress that your floor plan and music should be something you and your horse enjoy. While it is being judged, Sophie advises against trying to please the judge too much. “Do it for you and your horse – you need to have feel and empathy and to enjoy riding it.”

He just thinks hacking is very exciting and I come back shaking and white – it’s the only thing he’s naughty about. He’s like a pet and mortified if he does anything wrong. He’s a lovely boy. “She loves to trot – it’s her favourite thing in the world, and she loves extended canter – you feel her waiting for it in every test and when I say it’s time, I think everyone gets worried we’re not going to stop at the end. She loves it, I’m always saying ‘not too much.”

MIRRORS FOR TRAINING EQUESTRIAN TRAINING MIRRORS

With the instant feedback of real-time reflections, you can easily adjust your moves on the moment without waiting for a trainer or video replay. Your horse can feel the correction right when it happens, making the learning process so much smoother. Plus, when your trainer explains the subtle nuances of each movement, you’ll have a crystal-clear understanding thanks to those trusty mirrors. With practice, you’ll develop those picture-perfect habits like nailing your half passes and shoulders ins, or perfecting your seat and leg positions. And if you’re a trainer, Mirrors are the ultimate teaching assistant for flying changes, and piaffe and passage perfection.

Our clients rave about the big improvement in their riding after adding mirrors to their arena, and swear they couldn’t live without them. So, let’s get strategic and add this asset to your training arena!

Our arena mirrors are renowned for their durability and toughness, distinguishing them from other ostensibly comparable products. Unlike conventional sheets of glass, our mirrors are assembled in our factory located in the Midlands, featuring an 3 layer system of safety mirrors, impact-resistant core enclosed within a sturdy steel frame and backing. This is particularly vital when using mirrors outdoors, as glass on its own, even with a safety backing, will not su”ce in terms of durability. Our mirrors are supported by a proven system and installation process, and we offer an extensive guarantee.
