Editor’s letter The Reinvention Of Heritage Wear

F

or me there is truly nothing quite as British as the classic Burberry trench coat. Iconic in its design, the Burberry trench has become the insignia for those with impeccable style and unquestionable taste. Envisioned 118 yeas ago and crafted in its current form in 1914 for soldiers active during WWI; this sleek, sophisticated garment is a testament to the ingenuity of British designers, and to our unparalleled creative brilliance and artistic excellence.

In recent years however, classic has ‘become’ conventional, and in an industry where new and outlandish ideas often thrive, each design house must modernise and evolve. It may be said therefore, that the reinvention of heritage wear, in particular the Burberry trench, is a clear indication of both the brands commitment to its impeccable image and unwavering ability to remodel something so significant and approach this change in a fearless and fervent manner. Unifying timeless fabrics with updated materials (such as the velvet-finish, translucent rubber sleeves, collar and gun flaps) stylistic elements like the metal-detail epaulettes and slant pockets, are complimented in the most contemporary yet timeless fashion.

To the writers, photographers, illustrators and editors who have made this possible with months of hard work and dedication, you are very much appreciated. The intent of British MODE is simple yet poignant. We are a celebration of established and upcoming British brands who intend to be at the forefront of the international design field. We are a declaration that as of yet, the best is still to come.

The appeal of Marilyn Monroe and Diana Dors is one that has spanned the decades, encompassing generations and reaching across all ages and nationalities.

Take the time to elicit impressions of these two notorious women from those around you and chances are you will receive similar responses; all reminiscing of blonde bombshells, with killer curves and red pouts - the ultimate Hollywood siren. Monroe and Dors intelligently built successful careers upon their own understanding of just how powerful the female form can be; creating a façade behind which they were to hide their own personal turmoil.

Dors became engrossed in the glamorous world depicted in movies from a young age, and growing older saw her delicate figure buried beneath more curvaceous proportions. As a result she made her first conscious effort to emulate those silver screen goddesses whom she so admired; lightening her brunette hair to a fairer shade of blonde - a transformation which saw Diana draw comparisons with her idol Veronica Lake. Catching the attention of the amorous American GI’s that had populated the town during her early teenage years, Diana often danced the night away caught up in a whirlwind of compliments and sweet nothings. reative Director Christopher Bailey never ceases to amaze those who gather faithfully each season for Burberry’s show. His offering for Burberry Prorsum’s AW 13 collection, cheekily entitled ‘Trench Kisses’, was no exception. As the likes of Kate Beckinsale, Frieda Pinto and Rosie Huntington Whiteley looked on from the front row, the catwalk came to life through a spectacle of animal prints, dashing gold hardware and delightful heart designs.

A selection of items in the collection, including a distinctive leather skirt crafted from tiny tassels of gold stud appliqués and unstructured bags held nonchalantly under the arms of the models, gave an obvious nod to military attire. Gold heart shaped plates adorned dresses, whilst structured metal chest plates juxtaposed against sensuous fabrics and classically tailored designs.

White, camel, oxblood, black and gold formed the base colours of the collection, with textures proving a clear focus. Glossy cashmeres and calfskins intermingled amongst coloured latex and laminated python print leather.

Combining AW13’s most popular animal prints, Bailey contrasted leopard against the more diverse zebra and giraffe; at times combining them alongside bold stripes. Gold

Having arrived as a bundle of excitement and personality, Cara blew kisses to the waiting crowds. Wearing a cool but casual outfit of jeans, hooded jacket, silver sneakers and sky blue beanie hat, Cara’s hair hung loosely around her shoulders as she radiated pure energy, pulling the faces that have become her trademark but as her mother may have warned, may well stick one day if the wind changes, and one must ask, what would be of her stratospheric modeling career then?

The energy continued backstage, with the stunning Karlie Kloss rocking her new short locks with aplomb. Clearly bursting at the seams with anticipation at making her first appearance for the brand, Karlie remarked on her own impressions of what has become a very British institution. “It’s so timeless and classic, and quintessentially London and English. I’ve always dreamt of having one of these trenches, I might 36

just take this one and run out” she laughed mischievously. Better keep an eye on that rail Mr Bailey, there is lady with a longing for a classic in your midst!

Bedecked in her much longed for Burberry trench, even if only for a little while, Karlie was accosted by the beautiful Jourdan Dunn, who was keen to teach her the ‘real Harlem Shake’. Banishing the preconception of backstage being merely a place of manic beautifying and little else, Dunn used the opportunity to release pre show tensions.

Once the show had come to an end, closed by an epic performance by Brit Award Winner Tom Odell of his new song ‘Hold On’, Delevingne took the time for an adrenaline fueled Q&A session. hoes are to die for, and Gianvito Rossi's are to be re-born for. Before you decide that such an emphatic statement is pure hyperbole, take a long, lingering, lusting look at his autumn/winter collection and reach your own conclusion; I dare you!

Rossi's design aesthetic is securely modern, feminine and unmistakably chic. His ethos is simple, shoes should make a woman smile and compliment her look. This collection features dazzlingly stream-lined pumps-cum-stilettos (better known here as Court shoes), sneakers and stylish architectural carbon wonders.

There are high heel platform shoes but no kitten, puppy, spool, cone, prism, hour glass or wedge heels; the pump, stiletto and sneaker 44

holds sway. Son of Sergio Rossi, Gianvito went on to launch his own line of shoes in 2006, later teaming up with Gucci and more recently collaborating with the darling of New York fashion, Joseph Altuzarra.

The classic fashion eras of the 1940’s and 50’s had some things 'very right,' especially showcasing beautiful women’s shapes and femininity.

Housed in the infamous No. 14 Savile Row, a location as steeped in history as the brand itself, Hardy Amies continues to define the epitome of London style. Renowned as the couturier of choice to Queen Elizabeth II for over 40 years, Sir Hardy Amies has left a lasting legacy and one which Creative Director Claire Malcolm continues in his honour today. Recognising that the true value of the brand lay in its heritage, the most recent collections have retained the gentlemanly essence of English sensibilities, whilst moving towards targeting the younger generations with a new ‘cool Britannia’ image. Iconic 1980’s British band The Jam provide the backing soundtrack to the current Hardy Amies advertising campaign, with ‘This is the Modern World’ accompanying an artistically shot black and white video set against the clean, white homepage. With 60

1960’s London and a nod to the mod-revival movement clearly a resounding inspiration, the video delivers a strong message of the brands intentions to create an innovative take on heritage wear.

Demonstrating an inspirational combination of traditional tailoring with modern day touches, the FW13 collection, presented in the Grand Salon of the house as is tradition, delivered a mix of gentleman and dandy - with a definite young, modern aesthetic. Scottish thistles adorned the lapels of suit jackets, whilst overcoats provided an early indication of Claire Malcolm’s inspiration; Hardy’s royal connotations and his presence within the realms of high society, with summers spent vacationing with British royalty at their Balmoral retreat.

Textures remained a focus for the designer, though there was a clear departure away from the strong fur elements showcased within the FW12 collection. Wool continued to provide a contrast against the sharp tailoring, as it had done in seasons before; although in this instance it was presented as thick navy cable knits, capes and overcoats in Bauhaus inspired linear prints that echoed the tartans around them. In refusal of an idea that appealing to a younger generation might see the compromise of luxury, expensive touches remained abundant; collars remained high, with ties sitting proudly, casual layering was provided by exquisite quality merino wool polo-necks, and accessories were complemented by the most buttery soft of leathers.

Described by Sir Hardy Amies as ‘the uniform of the gentleman…worn at all times when respect for tradition and hope for an ordered future prevail’, the man’s suit remains the explicit focus for the collection, revealing an unwavering dedication to the preservation of this master craft. In distinct contrast to their FW12 collection (consisting of a purely grey colour palette), the FW13 presentation signalled a return to the Prince of Wales check, featured strongly throughout earlier seasons. Double-breasted suits, smart ponchos and edgy rucksacks all showcased the Prince of Wales

In his influential book ‘The ABC of Men’s Fashion’, published in 1964, Hardy expressed a strong opinion of turn-ups on men’s trousers, firmly stating that ‘you can’t have any’.

With this in mind, the decision to send models down the catwalk with trousers tucked into thick woollen hiking socks and shiny black bovver boots is all the more notable, a declaration by the brand of adaptability.

Sir Hardy Amies once famously stated that “a man should look as if he has bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care, and then forgotten all about them”, and the FW13 collection encompasses this sartorially aware yet nonchalant attitude to men’s fashion. The ability of the Hardy Amies brand to remain current and on-trend, in the ever-changing face of London style and against an ever-increasing demand for fast fashion, serves as true testament to the legendary British fashion house.

In terms of new initiatives, there are no shortages of worthwhile causes and we are weighing up a number of options currently.

Some of the most special pieces I have created have been the bespoke pieces of jewellery, especially the bespoke engagement and wedding rings, it is so wonderful to be invited to be part of a lovely couple’s story.

Creating bespoke engagement rings which are completely personal to the couple, working in elements of there story and life is such a wonderful thing, I do adore this element of jewellery design.

The collection was inspired by tale of enchanted fairy glades and woodland tales, so in a way I have already created a wedding collection which I am looking forward to adding to in the future.

If there was a public figure you could design for or who you feel may be a great ambassador for your brand, who would that be and why?

Emma Watson has a wonderful elegance, a pixie like style which I love, Karen Gillan has a delightfully quirky & slightly vintage style (which I wear myself) so it would be amazing to have some of my jewellery worn by them, or to even design something just for either of the lovely ladies.

On another note it would also be perfect to have some of my jewels worn by Dr Alice Roberts or Dr Lucy Worsley, both of them are inspiring fascinating women who I admire - and love their TV shows, some of the only ones I get around to watching as I normally have my head in a book or creating jewels in the workshop.

Finally, what colour palette and overall theme will we be seeing throughout your next collection?

I will keep exploring some treasured tales, stories with mystery, enchantment and detail.

Endless ideas bubble around in my head so I will be happily creating forever. Switching between the darker tales and the lighter stories, there is so much inspiration out there. I live close to one of the UK’s biggest second hand bookshops which is an endless inspiration, having just picked up beautifully stunning copies of the Rubiyat, Paradise Lost and some Indian Fairytales, so who knows what will come.

I am also beginning to incorporate more gemstone into my designs, favouring iridescent and unusual stones like opal, labordite, moonstone, ametrine or stones with inclusions and imperfections like rutalites or of course emeralds which are my favourite.

‘If you have straight hair, prep with a small amount of L’Oreal Professionel tecni.art Pli and rough-dry in.

Once the hair is dry, lightly spray L’Oreal Professionel tecni.art Air Fix over the hair, take a wide-barrel tong and add a bend to the mid-lengths of the hair.

For those with naturally curly hair, begin by prepping damp hair with L’Oreal Professionel tecni.art Pli and a generous amount of L’Oreal Professionel tecni. art Liss Control and blow-dry straight, then take a wide-barrel tong and add a bend to the mid-lengths of the hair.

This style is most suited to all face shapes, especially round, as it is slimming. Make it a little more daring by adding a beach texture with L’Oreal Professionel Beach Fizz, and add an edgy diagonal parting.’

‘Divide the hair in 2 and add Kerastase Elixir Ultime throughout. Do a scalp fishtail plait to each side, by taking two pieces of hair and feeding a small part of the left-hand section over the right hand section. Repeat this on both sides of the headand secure each plait at the ends, wrap over one another and pin in place.This style is most suited to oval or heart face shapes. Pull some pieces out at the front to make it more wearable for other face shapes.

Make it a little more daring by using a gel to create a sleek and stylish wetlook finish, and massage the braids for a really lived-in look.’

‘To get this look you need to backcomb the fringe area and the crown to create plenty of texture. The hair is then scraped back and a comb is pulled through from the hairline to give more definition. There is no shortage of product on this look and the stray hairs at the nape have been precisely sprayed in place. This look is quite daring and won’t help soften features but works really well with heart shaped faces who have petite features.’

Diane Von Fürstenberg ‘This is a classic, glamorous blowdry, achieved using a barrel brush and large tongs to get the roundness through the ends. A smoothing cream is a must for this look with shine spray to finish. I love this rich, chocolate brown. To make it a little more daring you could have some multi-tonal slices placed through the perimeter of the hair which is a fresh take on the dip-dye look that has been popular for many seasons.’

Marchesa ‘Using a tail comb, section the hair from the crown behind each ear combing them forward. Secure the remaining into a tight ponytail at the nape of neck, apply gel and split into large sections criss-crossing them over each other and tucking under to create a wrapped bun. Take hair from each side of the front section, apply gel and criss cross over the back of your head then tuck the ends under the wrapped bun. With the remaining frontal hair create a deep side part and secure hair behind the ears, under the bun. Use shine spray to create a sheen and adorn with a few straight silver hair slides.’

It suits all face shapes and if you have a long face its best to wear a fringe, round faces wear all the hair swept back off your face, square and heart shapes be sure to let hair fall around the face to soften the look. Brush hair back into and secure into ponytail using a hairband low at base of your neck. Spray the ponytail with a heat protection spray.

Take about 2-3 inch sections of hair and proceed to curl them using your tong.

Once you have tonged your ponytail, pick up sections of your hair and roll the hair around your fingers to create a curl to then pin at the base of ponytail. Keep doing this until you have pin curled all of the hair and secured at the nape of neck creating a messy bun.’

4 Steps To Full Brows

Full brows are not only exotically beautiful, they are a mark of sophistication. Brows draw attention to your eyes & are the single feature which frames the face.

Although not everyone is lucky enough to have a naturally fuller brow, with the right products and a few of our tips, you can achieve today’s most sought after look.

Selecting The Shape

Begin by taking your tweezers and holding them in line with your nose to get an idea of where your brow should begin.

Next, angle the tweezers so that they are in line with the outside of your iris, generally this is the highest point of your arch.

Now that you have an idea of where your brows begin and end, use a spoolie brush to comb them upward. This creates the illusion of a fuller look and makes it easier to spot the sparser areas which need to be filled. If you’d like you can trim any hairs that stray above your brow line - do be careful when doing this!

Preparing for your wedding is as important as the ceremony itself, which is why we recommend booking a professional makeup artist well in advance.

There are however, many aspects to consider when booking an MUA:

* Always book a consultation with a few Makeup Artists that you like at least 6 – 8 weeks before the big day, as great Makeup Artists are often booked in advance. * Recommendations from friends are fantastic but always check out their portfolio. You need an MUA who knows the importance of photographic makeup and has experience with bridal make up and professional shoots. * Each MUA has their own style and it important that this is suited to what you desire. Try and book an Artist with several different looks in their portfolio. * Check out their qualifications and make sure that they have relevant insurance in place. * An experienced Makeup Artist will know exactly what time she should start and when she should be finished in time for you to dress. Normally its hair first and then makeup. * In some cases a Makeup Artist will also be a professionally qualified Stylist which is favourable and ultimately easier; as you only have to convey your expectations to that one individual who can then consider how the hair and makeup will compliment each other completely. * It is highly important to know what products they like to use. You do not want to select an MUA who doesn’t use high end products, as professional products are superior in quality and longevity. You will be need to look perfect all day and the pigments in these type of products are significantly stronger. * As a bride it is completely normal and somewhat expected of you to shed a tear, which is why waterproof products are so utterly crucial for bridal makeup. Even the most highly qualified and professional MUA can overlook things sometimes, so don’t be afraid to remind them and inqure about what they’re using. * Try, try and try again. There is nothing wrong with doing a full face trial run so that you can be sure that you skin agrees with the products and that you can either ‘ok’ or change the look well in advance.

When it comes to weddings there is a lot involved and for the health conscious bride a sculpted midriff is an absolute must. Of course it is easy to say that it’s a matter of simply losing body fat, but that is not necessarily going to create a toned middle.

Showing off a beautiful waistline comes down to knowing how to maximize your workouts.

through hours of crunches and seeing little in the way of results, it can be rather frustrating, so we have consulted with the experts and learned that the key is to follow a system which targets your entire core. The following are five of our favourite tummy toning exercises, focusing on all of the major abdominal groups. These can replace sit ups if you experience neck pain. If you are working at an advanced level, lift your legs off the floor or place them on an exercise ball.

Keeping your hands behind your head, engage your abdominals and curl your shoulders off the floor. Hold this position for 3 seconds and then slowly curl back down.

Leg Lifts Lying on your back, cross your hands in front of your chest or place them on the floor next to you. Take a breath, engage your abdominals and on the exhale slowly lift your legs about 5 inches off the floor. Without letting your back arch, lower them to 1 inch off the floor, then lift them back up and repeat.

Tip If this is too challenging, you can start with your legs in the air straight or bent at a 90 degree angle. You can also place your feet on an exercise ball.

Tip If this bothers your hip flexors, slightly rotate your legs outwards to relieve the pressure.

Jack Knife sit ups Lie flat on your back and lift your arms straight up to the ceiling. Inhale. On the exhale, engage your abdominals and lift your legs and upper body at the same time until you reach a perfect V position. Hold for 3 seconds and then slowly roll back to the floor and to your starting position.

Plank Assume the push up position only place your forearms on the floor. Hold for 10 seconds to start, building up to 45 seconds. Remember to keep your abdominals and glutes engaged while keeping your body in one long line.

Tip When this becomes easy try alternating leg lifts.

Citrus Quinoa SaladŠ Eunice

Serves 6

Ingredients * 100 grams quinoa * 2 and a half tbsp olive oil * 40 grams mixed seeds * Half tsp freshly grated nutmeg * Half tsp ground cinnamon * 2 tbsp flat leaf parsley * 2tbsp mint * 120 grams pomegranate seeds * Half lemon zest and juice * 320 grams skinned pheasant breasts * 2 garlic cloves – thinly sliced * 100 grams crispy salad * 50 grams – vacuum packed chestnuts, sliced

Method

1. Pre-heat oven 170 degrees centigrade/gas mark 3 2. Cook quinoa in salted boiling water for 10-12 minutes 3.Drain and rinse under cold water 4. Drain again 5. Set aside until fully dry then stir through one tbsp olive oil 6. Heat half tbsp olive oil in a frying pan 7. Toast seeds until golden 8. Add spices and heat through 9. Stir into a bowl with the quinoa, herbs, pomegranate, lemon zest and juice 10. Season and set aside 11. Heat tbsp olive oil in an oven proof frying pan 12. Fry the pheasant for 2 mins on each side 13. Add the garlic, roast for 8 minutes more in the oven 14. Season, rest for 3 mins then slice 15. Toss the salad with the pheasant slices in the pan that has been in the oven 16. Fold in the quinoa, serve from the pan and scatter with chesnut slices

* 3 ripe pears (e.g. Conference) * 2 tbsp Red Wine Vinegar * 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard * 1/4 tsp salt * 1/8 tsp pepper * 6 tbsp Olive oil * 1 bag of washed baby spinach * 1 packet of sliced proscuitto torn into strips * 150g chopped walnuts * Parmesan cheese wedge

Method 1. Peel and Cut pears in half and core them. Take one pear half, slice it into chunks and place in blender along with vinegar, mustard, 1/8 teaspoon of the salt and the pepper - puree until smooth. With machine running, slowly pour in the oil and set aside.

2. Cut the remaining pear halves into 1/2-inch wedges and place in a large bowl with the spinach. Pour over the dressing, before sprinkling with remaining 1/8 teaspoon salt. Toss gently.

3. Place 1-1/2 cups of greens and pears onto each plate. Top each with 1/4 of the prosciutto and 2 tablespoons of walnuts. Using a vegetable peeler, peel 5 strips of Parmesan cheese over each plate.
