EDITOR’S LETTER With the recent release of Maleficent, I for one am feeling rather inspired by Jolie’s transformational appearance. With current trends ranging from poker straight hair and muted makeup, to rebellious lashings of thick black liner and bronzed glowing skin, there’s absolutely no excuse not to experiment. So few females are bold or daring enough to sport a full face of makeup on a daily basis, which is understandable, but every once in a while it’s time to amp things up! This month we feature several beauty items, including ‘Maleficent Makeup Made Wearable,’ for those who are feeling somewhat inspired by Angie’s latest look. Whether you’re planning to venture out a lot this summer, or simply relax in the comfort of your own home, do be sure to read our ‘7 Rules of SPF’ as this truly does apply to everyone. For those opting for a fresh faced look but desiring a pop of colour, our ‘Matte = Chapped’ feature has you covered. Here at British MODE we’re fortunate enough to have an incredibly talented team. Our very own Wedding Fairy, George Watts, is promoting his ‘National Wedding Day,’ whilst writer Kimberleigh Spreadbury showcases her men’s bridal footwear brand, Havelocks London. As always, enjoy this month’s issue and do be sure to tweet us @BritishMODE

Radley London A
n example of all that is British, Radley London has long held a reputation as a master of quality and craftsmanship. With a range that spans 16 of the finest leathers, including the luxurious Harwood with a lengthy milling and tumbling process that spans one day and one night, the Radley focus has remained on crafting beautiful leather goods that stand the test of time and trend. Radley London began in 1998, a shining beacon of fun and frivolity amidst an increasingly serious accessories industry. With the now infamous Scottie dog appearing on charming picture bags and amongst busy leather appliquĂŠs, the Radley bag quickly became synonymous as the luxury accessory of choice for women seeking something with a little extra character. Now, 16 years later, collaborations with model Laura Bailey and rising fashion star Holly Fulton have ce-
mented Radley London firmly within the realm of modern accessory icons. Such collaborations have resulted in incredible collections, coveted by the fashion elite and signalling a move towards styles with a simpler design and even stronger impact. Impressive craftsmanship is the cornerstone for Radley
London’s current collections, and when combined with on-trend design concepts, the result is timeless. A darling of the fashion magazines, the Grosvenor collection expertly combines vintage equestrian influences with a neutral colour palette and that deliciously soft Harwood 13

he Border collection sees a design from the Radley archives given a thoroughly modern makeover, reinvented as a true competitor against high-end luxury designer offerings costing three times
the traditional styling of the Grosvenor line. The Kirkwood Clutch and Bowler bags are stunningly simple in design, with the intricate weave and incredible craftsmanship taking centre stage in a collection that promises to remain current as the seasons come and go. Throughout the Radley London brand there flows an implicit understanding of today’s
THROUGHOUT THE RADLEY LONDON BRAND THERE FLOWS AN IMPLICIT UNDERSTANDING OF TODAY’S WOMAN its price. They say that simplicity is often the most effective measure, and the Border collection proves this theory true. Designed with today’s working woman in mind, the collection includes several incarnations of the same pure design. The Border Tote is a blissful marriage of style and practicality, with attention paid to the inclusion of slip pockets and even a dedicated iPad pouch - we approve. The Kirkwood Collection stands as true testament to Radley London’s true level of leather expertise, combining intricately woven Alham leather with
woman, and it is building upon this knowledge that collections are designed as a feminine representation of British practicality. Grosgrain lining is luxurious yet functional, zip compartments and slip pouches fulfil the practical needs of the modern woman whilst blending seamlessly into classic designs, and the finest leathers are crafted with longevity and quality at the forefront. Radley London doesn’t design handbags for the season, but rather for a lifetime; a practical yet beautiful companion through the trials and tribulations of a modern world. 15

.Partimi. Eleanor Dorrien-Smith, founder of high fashion brand Partimi, graduated from the prestigious Central Saint Martins in 2008. Upon leaving the institution with a BA in fashion and print, Dorrien-Smith worked alongside world renowned designers such as Mary Katranzou and John Galliano, before establishing Partimi derived from the architectural term Parti, the initial starting point of a design project. The brand, which is currently stocked in the UK, USA and Hong Kong, strives to create dynamic pieces featuring arresting prints and fluid silhouettes which mirror nature’s ever changing environment. It is, therefore, rather fitting that ethics and sustainability are two important factors which shape the way Dor-
rien-Smith designs and sources materials for her brand. The designer, who is meticulous in sourcing local fabrics and British manufacturers, is able to produce high end, quality garments which possess fashion forward appeal.
M
ood boards comprised of photographic images captured by the designer, stimulate ideas for new concepts which are later developed into new prints and styles. The brand’s SS14 collection is a shinning example of Dorrien-Smith’s talent for pairing simple, soft silhouettes with naturalistic prints inspired by her own take on nature’s most beautiful repertoire. Each piece has a bespoke and personal narrative, breathing
life and intimacy into the collection, inspired by the Isles of Scilly, Cornwall - where Dorrien-Smith’s father originates. The vivid colour palette comprised of vibrant earth tones lends itself beautifully to the organic motif. T The signature prints of the collection are inspired by the Tresco Abbey Gardens, blooming with exotic plants laid down by her family over the past 150 years. Jackets, trousers, mid length and floor length dresses as well as a flirty play suit are all housed within the collection and can be worn interchangeably. What we love most is the versatility of the collection meaning that the pieces can be transitioned from day to night, and are brilliant for accentuating long, lean legs. Find out more via partimi.com

modelling sensation, inspiring entrepreneur and activist, Gisele encourages us to find the beauty within ourselves and to project it to the world.
Gisele’s Sejaa Pure Skin Care & the essence of true beauty
We are firm believers in purity and true beauty and that what you put on your body is just as important as what you put in it. Along with our morning smoothies and the green juices we are currently addicted to, we have been obsessing over Gisele Bundchen’s line of all natural cosmetics, Sejaa. A Goodwill Ambassador with the United Nations Environment Programme since 2009, Gisele is passionate about preserving the planet. This spirit is embodied in Sejaa, which means “To Be” in her native Portuguese. The name is a play on words, with the extra “a” being the sound of a deep exhale. There is a lot of power held in our breath. It is a common sound in yoga, where we are taught to exhale impurities and to create a calmness allowing our bodies to re-vitalize. As an international 38
Everything surrounding these products is eco-friendly, including the wind power manufacturing process. The skincare line is simple and streamlined, containing only three core products: a day cream, a night cream and a mud mask. Each item in the product line is carefully crafted with only the highest level of natural ingredients.
L
et’s take a moment to examine the day cream. With a pure and potent composition of aloe vera, shea butter and argan oil to name a few, it is a very lightweight cream and your protection against the damaging free radicals we encounter every day. We all know that sleep is the magic ingredient of anti-ageing, but how about giving it a little help. When we sleep, the production of collagen is accelerated. Sejaa’s night cream, with its powerful mixture of ingredients including safflower seed oil, green tea and ginseng, will act as your trusted partner in helping to rejuvenate your skin, keeping it glowing and youthful looking. We have dubbed Sundays as spa days.

“I want to help myself in any way I can to be more conscious, more present, more aware, more happy. And if my philosophy or products can help to make others happy, then I’ve been successful.” -Gisele
This is the moment which we look forward to all week, as it is the perfect time to energize and prepare for an upcoming week of work, meetings and stress. Of course, no spa Sunday would complete without a mask and we find ourselves reaching for Sejaa’s mud mask time and time again. We apply the detoxifying mineral mud treatment, reach for a cup of tea, put our feet up and feel its magic begin to work. After ten to fifteen minutes, all the impurities of the hectic week have been drawn out, our skin is left feeling fresh and our complexions are clear. We appreciate that Sejaa uses only the purest of ingredients, never tests its products on animals, is non-irritating, dermatologist tested and as a result, it has quickly become an essential member of our daily beauty routines. Remember, the secret to a flawless complexion is beautiful skin. 39

1. Use a cleansing oil daily such as the Dermalogica Precleanse £34 or Shu Uemura Skin Purifier, from £30. Be sure to follow with a micellar water solution - I’m currently loving the Bioderma Sensbio £15 (it’s a makeup artists fave) to remove all traces of the day and leave skin deeply cleansed.
2. Exfoliating your skin either once or twice per week will buff away all of the impurities leaving skin feeling toned and smooth. My personal recommendation is the Lancome Exfoliance Clarte retailing at £29.50. 4. Always moisturise your skin each morning with a cream, such as the Embryolisse Lait Creme Concentrate, £20.00. Having a regular moisturising routine will encourage rejuvenation of the skin and a clearer looking complexion. 6. Finally, always prime your skin before applying any type of foundation. Well prepped skin will create a flawless dewy base which is the perfect canvass. Clinique’s latest offering in Superprimers (£20.00) are ideal for combating signs of redness, dullness and any other discolouration issues.
3. Face masks don’t need to be an event involving candles and baths. Apply one to your skin whilst doing jobs around the house, just don’t answer the door! I find that the La Roche Posay Hydraphase Intense Masque (£16.00) leaves the skin baby soft, radiant and glowing. 5. For an intense skin-boosting treat, massage a few drops of facial oil into both the face and neck in circular motions each night. Don’t forget to use circular, upward sweeping motions to stimulate blood circulation to the face. My current favourite is the Balance Me Radiance Oil, £30.00.

ool, hip and refined, the K West Hotel & Spa is as stand out as the boldly lit West London building it resides in. A stroll from both Notting Hill and Kensington High Street, and mere minutes from Portobello, the hotel is well placed to experience and explore the very best of what London has to offer. Shoppers worth their salt will relish the proximity of K West to the deluge of designers at Westfield London’s The Village, with the likes of Chanel, Mulberry, Gucci
and bar areas, with my Executive Double featuring not only a sizeable bathroom, Bose sound system and luxe interiors, but also an enormous super kingsize bed. Add this to the tempting room service menu, and one could be forgiven for refusing to leave for the duration of their stay. Had it not been for the lure of an incredible spa, I may even have considered it myself. If there’s one thing that is sure to drag a girl from a cosy Executive room, it’s the promise of a fantastic spa. Hidden from husand Whistles all jostling for position amid the luxury offerings. The hotel itself is achingly hip. Previously the home of the BBC Studios, if walls could speak then the K West would certainly have some stories to tell. Long corridors have somehow retained an atmosphere of the hotel’s previous life as a gathering place of the rich and famous. Offices and studios are replaced with rooms that reside comfortably on the contemporary cool side of the spectrum. Sleek room interiors echo the stylish reception

tle and bustle of West London is the beautiful K Spa Holistic Spa & Fitness Club. Nominated in the World Luxury Spa Awards 2013, K Spa is certainly an impressive hideaway. Gym bunnies can work off that room service in the fully equipped and air conditioned fitness centre, before enjoying a holistic treatment using some of the finest skincare and aromatherapy products. Russie Blanche, Crystal Clear and Aromatherapy Associates are just a handful of those putting their names to procedures at the forefront of their specialist area. The spa itself is small but perfectly formed, housing a stunning hydrotherapy pool, sauna, sanarium and steam room. After relaxing in the sauna, I pensively decided it was time to explore the ‘Snow Paradise’. The very first of its Finnish kind in London, the Snow Paradise is set at -15 and permanently snow filled. Embracing of the hot-cold therapy philosophy, the sudden extreme change in temperature stim-
ulates circulation and boosts the immune system, providing incredible benefits to the body. Far from being the uncomfortable experience one might expect, the snow feels refreshing and instantly toning on the skin. After enjoying expertly mixed cocktails and the slick atmosphere of the bar, we headed off to bed, enjoying an incredible night’s sleep followed a great breakfast the next morning. For those seeking a modern hotel in West London, K West Hotel & Spa is up there with the best. It’s placement amongst restaurants, shopping and transport links is ideal, and for those who would rather enjoy a break from the hustle and bustle, the hotel has everything you need to envelope yourself up in a break from the stresses and strains of day to day life for a night or two. Luxurious interiors, delectable cuisine and an award winning spa are all supplemented by the fantastic service and can-do attitude of staff, making for a truly relaxing break in very cool style.

Puree Method * Place the Strawberries into a saucepan and cover with the Stock Syrup.
* Bring the pan to the boil before reducing to a simmer. * once the berries soften, strain off the liquid and place to one side. * Blend the Berries and gradually add the liquid until it’s a smooth and slightly thick consistency. * Pass through a fine sieve into a mixing bowl. * Pour into a squeezy bottle and refrigerate until later on.
aNGLAISE Method In a saucepan, pour the milk and 1 pint of Cream. Add Vanilla Pod seeds or the essence and place on a medium heat. While the liquids are coming to a simmer, whisk the Egg Yolks and Sugar in a mixing bowl. Once the liquid has reached a simmer, pass it through a fine sieve onto the Eggs and whisk until fully blended. Place the White Chocolate into a second bowl before pouring the liquid back into a pan and placing on a low heat, whisking continually until it is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Separate into two halves and add half to the chocolate and whisk in. Place in fridge and save until later. With the other half of the Anglaise, add half the Strawberry Purée and whisk it all together. Pour into small saucepan and refrigerate until later.
Sponge Method In a mixer, whisk the Egg Whites to stiff peaks and place in the fridge until required. In a fresh bowl, cream together the Egg Yolks and Sugar before folding in the flour, then the Egg Whites, making sure they are fully incorporated, but not knocking down the mix. Line a baking tray with grease proof paper and pour in your sponge mixture – be sure to spread evenly with a spatula. Cook in an oven at 165˚c. Once cooked, remove from the oven and place on a cooling rack. When Sponge has fully cooled, cut it into circles using round cutters. The size will be dependant on the size of the
fINISHING tOUCHES To construct the trifle begin by whisking the remaining pint of Cream to soft peaks and fold in the White Chocolate Anglaise until a smooth, thick mousse consistency is achieved and transfer the mixture into a piping bag. In the base of a glass, put a small dot of the purée, then a layer of the mousse about 1cm thick. Soak 1 disc of Sponge in Sherry and place it on top of the mousse and using the squeezy bottle, round the edge of the glass, pour a ring of Strawberry Purée. Sprinkle in 4 halves of Dried Strawberries & 4x ¼ fresh Strawberries on the top. Repeat the process one more time to finish. With one more layer of Mousse and a few more Dried Strawberries on the top, refrigerate before serving. To serve, heat the Strawberry Anglaise on the stove until it is hot. Using a hand-held blender, foam the Anglaise and spoon onto the Trifles until it is just coming to the top of the glass. Serve immediately before foam falls.

This is a chance to celebrate, whilst at the same time supporting and raising money for your favourite charity.
This is a chance to celebrate, whilst at the same time supporting and raising money for your favourite charity. From hosting a bbq for all your old wedding guests to recreating the chaos of your stag n hen – literally anything goes! Maybe you could rock the first dance all over again or even host a pre-wedding day celebration to get everyone buzzing before the big day. It really doesn’t matter what you do, the important bit is to make sure you raise as much cash as you can for your chosen charity. In 2012 The official launch party for National Wedding Day took place on Weds 1st August for Cancer Research UK at The Stade in Hastings and included a wedding vow renewal, catwalk show, lots of wedding dresses and a whole host of live entertainment! This year, The Wedding Fairy is officially supporting The Wedding Wishing Well Foundation, which helps those who are terminally ill plan their big day.

FAIRYTALE FLORAL GOWNS A master of the trade, Zita Elze’s floral designs are simply enchanting
Z
ita Elze is an incredibly gifted floral artist. An international designer who weaves her creations using natural elements such as fresh rose buds and beautiful berries. Brazilian by birth, Elze was raised on her grandfather’s fazenda (farm/plantation) in

the state of Bahia, surrounded by the untamed, semi-dry savannah which initially inspired her strong connection to nature. Having departed Brazil 27 years ago, Zita has since travelled Europe, residing in Italy, Germany and France before finally settling in
for her first floral exhibit at none-other than the Chelsea Flower Show.
W
ith a business based in West London just across the street from the heavenly Kew Botanic Gardens, Elze runs both her own enchanting flower shop and flower school - the Zita Elze Design Academy. The artwork produced by Elze reflects the delicacy of English garden flowers and foliage, echoing a desire to capture an idealised version of the rural idyll. Exemplifying remarkable precision and attention to detail, Zita creates garments which are as beauteous and at times, somewhat ethereal.
England in 1999. Elze became a student of design, immersing herself in the creative field. Beginning with the study of artistic bookbinding design in Paris, she then went on to study interior design at KLC, followed by
garden design at the Inchbald School of Design. As a result Zita is well versed in the craft and graduated from the Inchbald School of Design with Distinction in 2003. Six years later, she was awarded a Silver Gilt medal
“I love working with different textures and colours, but I never create a design based on these factors alone, remarks the designer. I create based on emotions‌ the results I achieve both with my own work and when teaching my students speak for themselves. Our perception is limited by habit, rules and regulations and I believe that only if we are able to transcend them, we can be real 63

whether something is right or wrong, I follow my emotions, my instincts and my inner voice,” she explains. The brand is utterly synonymous with elegance and purity, wherein vivid colours and naturalistic elements combine harmoniously. With an exquisite design aesthetic, Elze’s exceptional creativity enables her to introduce new techniques to the floral industry, such as her signature Floral Embroidery.
t
he sheer intricacy of her fresh floral tapestries which are applied to each medium from glass to metal, have led to much international acclaim. Since 2010, Zita has combined floral design with haute couture, creating extra-ordinary gowns utilising fresh flowers, grasses and leaves. In 2011 the designer created a 100% floral wedding gown which was modelled at the Chelsea Flower Show. The bodice was composed with fresh rose buds, small delicate flowers, berries and seed heads ; the skirt and train were made from thousands of dried skeleton leaves, and the effect was spell-binding. This gown was followed by others for exhibitions and events such as the Singapore Garden Festival, The Designer Wedding Show and Brides The Show. In May 2013, she was commissioned by the main sponsors of the Chelsea Flower Show to design a dress in the style of early 1910s made up of only those grasses and flowers used for the M&G Centenary Garden. Zita’s talent for styling has been recognised by many prestigious venues, and renowned firms such as the White Company, for whom she has designed their best-selling Christmas Collection of wreaths and garlands for the last two years. “One day I would like to present my floral couture at the London Fashion Week,” Zita admits. “People love flowers, they love haute couture, and combining the two opens new horizons and amazing possibilities that I long to share with a wider public.”

The staging will be nothing less than premier. Whilst speaking with Editor-in-Chief, Gabriella Enriocco, Julia opened up about the foundation of the company.
“The automotive and Telco industries may not seem the obvious place to pursue an apprenticeship for the global luxury market but it was lessons learnt there which have enabled the rapid growth of Snapdragon Parties. I saw a need for an events company that offered clients planning rigour, commercial savvy and creative excellence. I recognised that senior executives and wealthy entrepreneurs (primary clientele) want a well-run project, whether it’s their wedding or even a 50th birthday party. Some first-hand experience of others in the events industry taught me that while napdragon offers a tight focus on they may be creative, most peoindividual budgets and schedules, ple were hopeless at complex proa central part of the companies jects or managing a supply chain. in Winter Multi-award winning wedding planner, author and business advisor, Tamryn Lawrence, on planning a winter wedding. Glittering frosts, crackling fires, fireplace can all work wonder- fun but then ditching your the glow of hundreds of candles, indulgent food and warming drinks – when you paint such beautiful pictures of winter weddings, it’s no wonder that they’re incredibly popular. Of course, and as with every wedding, there are things to keep in mind when you’re planning your event to make sure that it’s an absolute cracker rather than a bit of a turkey…

fully when you can’t get the traditional summery garden backgrounds. Also, if you’re feeling hardy and like the idea of some outside photos, don’t forget to check what time the sun will set on your wedding date and speak to your photographer about this sooner rather than later.
When it comes to food and drink at winter weddings, the word ‘warm’ is definitely the one to keep in mind. Comforting drinks, nibbles and meals are always favourites but icecold champagnes and cocktails are also perfect and wonderfully celebratory. Winter punches served from huge silver bowls or hot chocolates topped with snowflake marshmallows or candy-cane stirrers, there’s so much scope with winter food that your taste-buds should be tingling at the mere thought!
irstly, start with your venue. Remember that you’re likely to spend the whole day inside and rather than staring at the same four walls for the entire time, look for a venue where there are a number of rooms available for you so you and your guests can move through the various spaces during the day. This means that you can, at the risk of cliché, take your guests ‘on a journey’ through ceremony, dinner and reception whilst not reveal- Oh, and another huge plus for ing your plans ahead of time. winter weddings in my book are the options for gowns Whilst you’re checking out ven- and accessories. top-layer before hitting the dance floor transforms your look ready for the evening party. I also have a major crush on black/white tie weddings in the winter months. Such a perfectly elegant look for a candlelight event that’s super stylish and it certainly sets your wedding apart from the workaday world of plain suits. There’s also so much choice of equally glam women’s evening wear available in the run up to Christmas that suddenly it’s so much easier for your guests to choose an outfit. As you might have gathered, I’ve got quite a soft spot for wintry weddings and if I ever head up the aisle in the future, I’ll be a winter bride because I love love love winter. I love it for its sense of fun, magic and happiness. I love winter because ordinary days can suddenly be made extraordinary with a sprinkling of snow or a night by the fire. I love it because it puts everyone in the mood to celebrate and enjoy a party. And, if you’re going to throw the biggest party of your life for your friends and family, then there’s no better time to do it than in the winter.
