Welcome to The British Polo Day Charity Cup, presented by Land Rover. Our first thank you must go to the Schwarzenbach family who are, once again, our generous hosts here at the Black Bears’ River Ground and we could not ask for more glorious surroundings. This event is the home leg of The British Polo Day Global Series. Over the past three years, there have been over 30 British Polo Days held in 14 different countries. We are indebted to many great British brands and companies that have come together to support us globally and we thank them all for their vision. We also thank you all for coming. The British Polo Day Community continues to thrive and it is good to see many familiar faces from all over the world as well as welcoming people for their first British Polo Day experience. Today is a celebration of the best of British and what better way to start than a lunch authored by the legendary British chef Theo Randall accompanied with wines provided by Justerini & Brooks and Royal Salute whisky. You will then be treated to The British Polo Day Charity Cup, celebratory and highly competitive encounter between The British Exiles Atlantic Polo Team and The Commonwealth Team. This match will be followed by The Hackett Trophy, which will see The British Schools Polo Team play against Team Singapore. One of the main objectives of the day is of course to raise as much as possible for our six chosen charities: Head Injury Through Sport, The James Wentworth Stanley Memorial Foundation, The Eve Branson Foundation, Great Ormond Street Hospital, The British Red Cross and the Brooke. These charities mean a great deal to us, our partners and the friends & founders in each case. We ask you to please bid generously and to look at the official Lot Catalogue located at the back of this programme for more details. We hope you have a great day!

Although the ancient sport of polo began in Persia and China many centuries ago, the British reinvented the modern game in the Nineteenth Century. Sir Winston Churchill, one of the greatest proponents of the game, once famously said “a polo handicap is a passport to the world and polo is still thriving everywhere it is played, from Argentina to New Zealand. British Polo Day carries on the tradition of the British playing polo against friends in a host of different countries around the world.

The green player has the line, and at fair speed the white player would be crossing the line without sufficient safety margin, resulting in a penalty against white.
3
When travelling in the same direction the white player may draw level with green and then force him across the line and take possession of the ball without committing a dangerous foul.
5
Two players riding for a ball from opposite directions in the open must both give way to the left and take the ball on their right or offside.

Even at a far lesser angle the white player would still be crossing the line if he continues in that direction, and committing a dangerous foul.

The white player may move in parallel with the line and play a shot providing he can do so without interfering with the green’s mount or causing him to check back. If white would cross the line to the dotted position it would be a foul.

When two players are approaching a ball in the open from different directions, the player (white), with the line of the ball on his offside, right hand side, has right of way.

The British Polo Day Great Britain is once again being played at the home of the Black Bears. Two generations have spanned four decades at the peak of the high-goal landscape in Britain and the team has amongst the most successful haul of trophies from any team to have played in this country. A hiatus from the top level after the 2007 season resulted in a dominant spell in the 15-goal and 18-goal. 2013 marked the return of the Black Bears to high-goal and this season the two 8-goalers John-Paul Clarkin (New Zealand) and Facundo Solas (Argentina) will form the team’s central partnership. John Paul, or JP as he is known, is Australasia’s leading professional and Solas is a product of the greatest polo nation in the world and is one of Argentina’s notable rising talents to watch. Patron Guy Schwarzenbach has been honing his skills in Australia during the build-up and the side is rounded off by 4-goaler Paco O’Dwyer, who splits his polo time between playing in The UK, Argentina and New Zealand. The Brompton Cycle Polo Exhibition Match
This year at the British Polo Day Great Britain we are pleased to showcase Cycle Polo in partnership with Brompton bicycles. All Bromptons are designed and built in their factory in West London, England. Brompton is one of only two major frame manufacturers still based in the UK, and have been in full production since 1988. The company remains in private hands and is now led by Will Butler-Adams, though the Brompton’s inventor, Andrew Ritchie, continues to act as Technical Director. Today, Bromptons are sold in 42 export markets. Cycle Polo was invented in County Wicklow, Ireland, in 1891 by retired cyclist, Richard J. Mecredy. That same year the first Cycle Polo match was played between The Scalp and the Ohne Hast C.C.. Towards the end of the 19th century the game reached Great Britain, France, and the United States where the American Star Bicycle was a popular mount. The first international match was played between Ireland and England in 1901. Cycle polo was a demonstration sport at the 1908 London Olympics with Ireland winning the gold, beating Germany. The sport reached its peak of popularity in Great Britain during the 1930s with the introduction of the regional leagues. Cycle Polo also flourished in France during this period with the establishment of the French league. Internationals between France and Great Britain were held regularly. However the Second World War marked the beginning of the demise of Cycle Polo in Britain. The sport managed to hang on in France though, with league championships held regularly still today. The 1980s saw the rise of two new powers in cycle polo, India and USA. The Cycle Polo Association of India was officially created in 1966 and the Bicycle Polo Association of America was created in 1994. International cycle polo matches staged a comeback in the 1990s with the first world championship organised in 1996 in the USA. Today there is organised cycle polo being played in Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Ireland, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland and USA. Cycle Polo was officially recognised by the International Cycling Union in 2001.

POLO PLAYERS TO OCEAN ROWERS T h e
a t l a n t i c
P o l o
T e a m
If there is one way of putting polo on the map, then that would be four polo players rowing 3000 miles unaided across the Atlantic Ocean in a tiny rowing boat. Followed by national press and profiled across The Sunday Times, BBC and Daily Mail to name but a few titles, these intrepid four converted ‘adventurers’ also landed on our TV screens as the stars of a Sky Sports documentary about their gruelling adventure. The Atlantic Polo Team is made up of former Captain of the England Polo Team Henry Brett also the only English player of his generation to reach a handicap of eight goals. Joining Henry were professional polo players Viscount Melville (or to his friends Bobby Dundas), James Glasson and completing the team, amateur polo player and ex stockbroker Fergus Scholes. The team, captained by Bobby Dundas, were more accustomed to travelling around the world playing polo than rowing in pairs two hours on and two hours off across 3000 miles of Atlantic Ocean stretching from the Canaries to Antigua. On 4th December The Atlantic Polo Team were part of a fleet of 16 crews of fours, pairs and single amateur rowers to set off in just a seven metre by two metre rowing boat to take part in The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge – the No.1 Ocean Endurance Event. The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge only Takes place every two years while more people have been into space, or climbed Everest than have rowed the Atlantic. The race is also unaided meaning disqualification for a team if they need outside support. Just 10 days into the row The Atlantic Polo Team were hit by the worst weather seen in 100 years and it was some two weeks into their expedition that Bobby was able to send the first message back to family and friends: “We could write a million words to describe our experience during our time at sea. Everyone suffered sea sickness, blisters and general freak outs. You don’t stop rowing and it is laborious to say the least as we basically row, sleep, row, sleep. But we unite and lift each other and this was our primary reason for finishing this. We were stuck in an airtight cabin for three days, seen a shark, faced storms and even had a man overboard who was thankfully tied to the boat by his safety line cable else the currents would have taken him.” It was set to be a sporting challenge that put them to their biggest test but 48 days and seven minutes later The Atlantic Polo Team set foot back on land having won their class of ‘fours’ and were the second boat out of 16 to finish the race.
In the first two weeks of this endurance race, three crews had already been rescued and air lifted to safety with a fourth retiring within days. In the meantime, The Atlantic Polo Team were locked in their tiny cabin for 70 hours enduring a storm that not even the most experienced of sailors could of prepared for. As their boat Tiny Dancer got thrown around by 30 foot waves and confused seas, unable to row they drifted back to where they had started and were in 11th position looking set to be defeated by the ocean. Avid ‘dot watchers’ were glued to the boat’s beacon tracker for the four hourly online position updates and were sat on the edge of their seats as The Atlantic Polo Team picked up their oars and took to battle. During the course of the last 30 days the team rowed themselves into second position despite having rowed over 100 miles more than any other team and also won a closely fought battle of their own against Row 2 Recovery – who were at times just five miles behind them for the duration of the second half of the race. British Polo Day is joined by many in congratulating the team on their success and huge achievement. The Atlantic Polo Team rowed 3000 miles in aid of the Brooke and working equines in disadvantaged countries around the world. The Brooke is an international animal welfare charity dedicated to improving the lives of working equines in some of the world’s poorest communities. The Brooke provides treatment, training and education programmes in 11 countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America, where there is the highest population of working equines and extreme levels of human poverty. Around the world there are 100 million working equines suffering some of the most punishing working and environmental conditions of any animal on the planet. In some countries, working horses will carry loads of 22 stone at a time, 10 times a day, without any food or water. Last year the Brooke was able to reach 1.2 million working equines, providing vital medical treatment and arming local communities with the knowledge and tools they need to prevent issues from happening in the first place. The charity was established in 1934 by Dorothy Brooke who rescued war horses left behind following the First World War. The Brooke will mark 80 years of its work in 2014, alongside the centenary of the start of the war. The Brooke is delighted to be the chosen charity for The Atlantic Polo Team to help raise essential funds to support the goal to reach at least two million working equine animals a year by 2016. For further information, please visit www.thebrooke.org and www.atlanticpoloteam.com

Red Collar Umpires 46
r e d
c o l l a r
u m p i r e s
Prior to the mid nineties players umpired matched at all levels which was accepted as part of the game. However at the higher levels as more money was poured into polo, and the top professionals became disenchanted with the idea of umpiring, a small group of professional umpires were selected by the then Chief Umpire, Martin Trotter, to run matches. At the same time a professional umpire from the Argentine was employed by the HPA to give further weight to the programme at the high goal level only. In general this was successfully aided by the employment of an umpire/assessor from the United States. As time passed our homegrown umpires became more experienced and for the most part concentrated on umpiring at the expense of their playing career. The scheme was expanded to pick up all the Victor Ludorum matches at 15 goal and above and the semi finals and finals at the lower levels. Management of the PP Group, now 8 strong, remains with the Chief Umpire, Robert Graham, who allocates umpires to matches as required independent of the club running the tournament. They are entitled to wear a red collar on their umpire shirt and they are expected to achieve a high standard of fairness, control and discipline. They are paid a proper wage on a per game basis for which the teams are charged by the HPA. The success of the scheme may be measured by the fact that our top professional umpires are invited to stand in tournaments around the world though as not yet in the USA or Argentina.

TEAMS - The British Exiles Atlantic polo team 50 1
The British Exiles atlantic polo team The British Exiles Team is comprised of some of Britain’s top young players and a wide range of other polo enthusiasts, who play predominantly outside Britain at British Polo Days around the world – hence the “Exiles” Bobby Melville (Captain of The APT) picked up his first cap at BPD Germany 2013 and is looking to win a second coveted trophy for The British Exiles. To help him achieve this goal, Bobby is joining forces with the same three men he spent 48 days in an ocean rowing boat at the start of this year. Henry Brett - former Captain of England - has won prestige and admiration amongst his fellow piers in winning nearly every major polo tournament the globe has on offer. He will act as ‘quarter back’ for the team. James Glasson from Sussex will provide the human equivalent of a short wheel based Land Rover and acts as the rock in defence. Finally Fergus Scholes, who boasts less accolades on the field than the other three, is raring to turn grit into glory.

The Commonwealth of Nations is an intergovernmental organisation of 53 member states that were mostly territories of the former British Empire. Polo thrived in these countries, and as a result many remain the leading global polo hubs. Australia, New Zealand and South Africa represent the most significant group, with many of their polo professionals choosing to base themselves in England over the summer and vice-versa. Aron Harilela has flown over from Hong Kong to represent India and The Commonwealth as the Captain of the visiting team and he is joined by his great friend Max Gottschalk. The British Schools Polo Team has been introduced as a nod not only to the best amateur traditions of the sport but also to institutions that are renowned and respected around the world. The transition to a sporting era of ever increasing professionalism inevitably displaces some of the spirit and charm of a bygone age. Sir Winston Churchill (who else) made a statement that is widely known in the world of polo but nevertheless neatly summarise the ability of polo to bridge cultures - “A polo handicap is your passport to the world” Today’s four players have travelled widely as a result of their long-standing multigenerational passion for the game. They have all represented their various schools at home and abroad over the years.

Polo is perhaps the oldest game in the world – having been played over 2500 years ago - and is truly international. The name polo is said to have been derived from the Tibetan word “pulu”, meaning ball.

History of the game
n 600 BC the first recorded game of polo took place between the Turkomans and Persians. The Turkomans won. Polo began as a training game for cavalry units, usually the King’s Guard or other elite troops. To the warlike tribesmen, who played it with as many as 100 to a side, it was a miniature battle. Persian literature and art give us the richest accounts of polo in antiquity. Ferdowsi, the famed poet-historian, gives a number of accounts of royal polo tournaments in his 9th century epic, Shahnameh (the Epic of Kings). In the earliest account, Ferdowsi romanticises an international match between Turanian force and the followers of Siyâvash, a legendary prince from the earliest centuries of the Empire. The game spread into North India. In fact Sultan Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the first Muslim Emperor of North India, actually died accidentally in 1210 playing polo.

From Persia, in medieval times polo spread after the Muslim conquests to the Ayyubid and Mameluke dynasties of Egypt and the Levant, whose elites favored it above all other sports. Notable sultans such as Saladin and Baybars were known to play it and encourage it in their court. Polo sticks were features on the Mameluke precursor to modern day playing cards. Polo was passed from Persia to other parts of Asia including the Indian subcontinent and China, where it was very popular during the Tang Dynasty and frequently depicted in paintings and statues. The Moguls were largely responsible for taking the game from Persia to the east and by the 16th century the Emperor Babur had established it in India. Polo was revived in Japan by the 8th Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune (1684-1751) and was played until early 20th century. It was the favourite sport of the last Shogun who surrendered power to the Emperor in 1868.

The modern game of polo, though formalised and popularised by the British, is derived from Manipur (now a state in India) when British tea planters discovered the game in Manipur (Munipoor) on the Burmese border with India and established the first polo club in the world at Silchar, west of Manipur in 1862. In 1869, Edward “Chicken” Hartopp, 10th Hussars, read an account of the game in The Field, while stationed at Aldershot, and, with brother officers, organised the first game known then as “hockey on horseback”- on a hastily-rolled Hounslow Heath against The 9th Lancers. The 1st Life Guards and the Royal Horse Guards were quick to follow suit on grounds at Hounslow and in Richmond Park; and then on a small ground near Earl’s Court known as Lillie Bridge. The first polo club in England was Monmouthshire, founded by Capt. Francis “Tip” Herbert, 7th Lancers, at his brother’s seat, Clytha Park, near Abergavenny in 1872.

British Polo Day Morocco 2014
Global Philanthropy Partners BRITISH POLO DAY RUNNING TOTAL - $919,780 USD raised to-date. In countries all over the world, polo has a long history of raising significant funding for worthy causes. Wherever possible, British Polo Day is entirely committed to bringing to bear the full weight of our partners, network and creative talent to this end. It looks likely that the funds raised as a result of BPD GB 2014 will ensure that over $1,000,000USD will have been raised for worthy causes, from a standing start just three years ago. Philanthropy has been a fundamental part of British Polo Day right from the very beginning. An early collaborative event – hosted by Lord Lloyd Webber at his Watership Down estate – raised over £85,150 in the summer of 2011. A “Gold Standard” approach has always been sought. Every pound/dollar raised goes direct to the chosen charities in each country. There is no foundation and no administration fees applied. All BPD sourced lot proceeds get evenly distributed and all charity-sourced lots go direct to those charities. The pressure on each seat at this Theo Randall authored lunch by The InterContinental Park Lane has inevitably increased, as demand rises and supply remains constant. Those guests who are kind enough to support the Lord Archer orchestrated Live Auction and the iBid Auction will be remembered for this event next year and indeed other legs around the world. For those of you who cast winning bids and underbids – thank you. For those of you who have been wary of participating in the past – try it, it’s good fun, good for the soul and always much appreciated. Please also take the time to see important Conditions of Sale for all lots on pages 140-144. As far as it is within your power to do so, please bid with reckless abandon!

Š Richard Dunwoody/The Brooke
It is my great pleasure to welcome you today to the British Polo Day Charity Cup. For me, polo was an instant passion. The minute I took up the game I loved it. Now you can simply enjoy watching the horses and the skill of the game within the most glorious polo location in the country thanks to The Schwarzenbach family’s generosity. In 1930, Geoffrey Brooke was appointed to the command of The British Cavalry Brigade in Egypt. It was then that his spirited wife Dorothy realised she would not rest until she had found the surviving war horses there. Born and bred in the green fields of England horses were sold into hard labour overseas after serving their country so nobly in the First World War. The powerful combination of love and respect for horses, and boundless compassion, enabled Dorothy to create an inspiring legacy. Today the Brooke is one of the most farreaching and effective animal welfare charities in the world. Improving the lives of working equines is something I care about deeply and is why I am proud to be a trustee. I cannot thank enough The Atlantic Polo Team for completing The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, replacing horse power for man power, in aid of the Brooke. I hope they continue their success by winning on the ground today. The image ‘Leaving The Kilns’ was part of a series of photographs taken by Richard Dunwoody MBE to showcase the Brooke’s work. I was so moved by this image that I bought the original which now hangs in my office. With so many lovers of The Horse here today, we present an opportunity for you all to “put something back” into the equestrian world, especially to those equines who suffer so much in some appalling conditions. The Charity Cup is supporting many good causes and I encourage you all to bid with reckless abandon!

We are delighted to be able to share some of our work with you today and from everyone here at the British Red Cross we thank you for your generous support. Lack of access to water, sanitation and poor hygiene are the principal causes of death and disease worldwide. Globally, 2.5 billion people do not have access to basic sanitation facilities and as a result, the lives of billions of people are adversely affected. The Red Cross wants to help make a change and one place where this change has already started, is Uganda. Thanks to Land Rover’s support the Red Cross has created a vital new water and sanitation project in the rurally isolated districts of Hoima and Kibaale. Tucked away in the north west of the country, these communities have to walk many miles each day to fetch the only water that is available; it often must come from dirty rivers or stagnant lakes and pools. The Red Cross has started a project to help change the lives of people in these communities. By installing new hand pumps and boreholes we are providing clean, safe water to people. Through community-led groups we are teaching people how to maintain these water points and use hygienic practices. Together, the Red Cross and these communities are making a change; we are helping to reduce the risk of disease and in doing so empowering people to take back control of their lives. Like many 23-year-old women around the world Aisha dreams of getting married one day. But the photos of wedding dresses on her wall seem far removed from the reality of everyday life in Kibora Parish on Uganda’s Lake Albert. Aisha’s days are busy with chores: cooking, washing clothes, cleaning and awaking early each morning to fetch water from the lake. But she knows that the water she relies on is unsafe. The lake is the only source for miles around, with the nearest health centre 12km away. Yet Aisha, who shares a one-bedroom house with her three children and other family members, has no choice. Aisha often sees her family suffer from cholera, diarrhoea and malaria. Every two weeks her children fall ill and she knows the cause is the lake water, yet all she can do is buy medication from the local drug store with the little money she has. But there is hope that life for Aisha and her family will improve. Kibora parish in Uganda is one of the Land Rover supported communities receiving life-saving help from the Red Cross. With this support the Red Cross has been able to provide a vital water and sanitation project in Kibora and her neighbouring communities. Thank you for your support today, and we hope you have a wonderful day at the British Polo Day Event.

Eve Branson’s impassioned, unwavering and ongoing support for the local communities in the Berber villages in The High Atlas Mountains is a rallying cry that British Polo Day has been delighted to follow. All funds raised as a result of BPD GB 2014 will go towards sustainable initiatives and projects in these remote villages, where the focus of The Eve Branson Foundation is on capacity building and empowerment. The Foundation aims to create positive opportunities, working in partnership with each village, to bring about transformations both economically and socially. We define needs and build a spirit of trust and collaboration by working closely with village elders and have learnt that with patience and determination we can combine our entrepreneurial spirit with the Berber culture successfully. Today our initiatives include the provision of community craft houses and vocational training programmes for young women in the villages of Tansghart, Imskar, Tiwizi, Tamgounssi, Tifaouine and Asni. Women are trained by professional multi-lingual tutors to speak English and French, to embroider and knit and to create high-quality artisan products, for which we then try to establish a marketplace. We’ve seen entire communities transformed, through the provision of facilities that enhance village life and through the incomegenerating initiatives we’ve established. We are hugely thankful to the British Polo Day team for this great opportunity and with your support and generosity, we can help more local people to generate new income streams and enhance individual skills. “The philosophy of the foundation is to teach the local girls lifelong skills, removing the need to beg or ask for charity, for the Berbers are a proud, happy people.” Eve Branson The Eve Branson Foundation

On behalf of the ‘Face Value’ charity appeal for the children at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, England, I wanted to thank all of you attending today’s British Polo Day event in Great Britain, and for allowing our Face Value Campaign to be part of this fantastic day. Our Face Value campaign for Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) was started a few years ago after my first child, Oscar, was born with a rare syndrome called Crouzon Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that causes the craniofacial bones to fuse prematurely. Oscar is cheeky, bright and brimming with personality. Everyone who knows him is delighted he’s doing so well because he hasn’t had an easy start in life. Oscar has already had numerous operations to relieve the pressure on his brain and eyes to improve his breathing. When Oscar is older he’ll need another major operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital to help expand and reshape his skull so that his brain can keep growing. Children with craniofacial conditions have to face many challenges - not only functional, but also the psychological pressure of looking ‘different’. With your help, the craniofacial surgery team at GOSH could develop life-changing new technologies to help children like Oscar. The craniofacial team at Great Ormond Street Hospital are committed to giving each patient the best possible chance in life. But further leaps forward are only possible with investment and research and development. Top craniofacial surgeons, Owase Jeelani and David Dunaway, aim to undertake an ambitious fiveyear programme to revolutionise surgery for children with craniosynostosis. They aim to develop pioneering new, and less cumbersome, devices to surgically move the skull and face, whilst improving the understanding of the anatomical problems of children with craniosynostosis. We’re committed to help raise £1million as soon as possible so that the team can start taking strides forward. We have already made good progress raising 50% of our target. Thank you very much for supporting today’s auction and with any donations you might care to make. It will be hugely appreciated by a large number of children who will benefit from your generosity. This is the third event that British Polo Day’s Fundraising Committee have chosen to raise funding for Great Ormond Street Hospital’s ‘Face Value’ charity appeal – BPD Mexico 2013, BPD USA 2014 and now BPD GB 2014. Thank you all very much and I hope you enjoy today’s British Polo Day Event.

HITS (Head Injury Through Sport) was co-founded by Sandra Cronan, Greta Morrison and myself. Each of our lives had been touched by the trauma of head injuries sustained personally or by loved ones with life-threatening consequences, whilst playing polo. Our mission at HITS is to help those who have suffered head injuries through sport by enhanced medical management and subsequent aftercare. Research has shown that recovery and good outcome is vastly improved by early, accurate diagnosis and treatment, as well as aftercare to deal with long term disability. Our aim is to play a significant part in closing the £1.35 million target of The National Brain Appeal to create a Neuroimaging Analysis Centre at The National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery. HITS is delighted to be associated with British Polo Day India – alongside The Maharaja of Jodhpur’s Indian Head Injury Foundation – as well as today’s British event, which is held here with us at our home and the base of the family’s Black Bears Polo Team. Last year’s inaugural event was a wonderful success on all fronts and I look forward to seeing this continue in the years ahead. Onwards and upwards!

Nick and I set up The James Wentworth-Stanley Memorial Fund (JWSMF) in 2008, two years after the sudden, tragic, and unexpected death of our beloved 21 year old son James. James had no history of mental illness or depression, but ten days following a minor operation his decline from being his normal, happy self to being anxious, depressed and ultimately suicidal, was so rapid that even those closest to him were unable to appreciate the severity of what was happening. In the aftermath of this devastating family tragedy, we then discovered something equally as shocking. That suicide is the greatest cause of death amongst young men (15-35) in the UK. More men under 35 die from suicide than road accidents, murder, and HIV/AIDS combined. Young men are three times more likely to kill themselves than young women. Contrary to what people may believe, suicide is not inevitable. It is preventable. Apart from raising awareness of this huge problem in the UK our funding incorporates: • • • •
Training in Suicide Prevention University Led Mental Health Support Suicide Bereavement Counselling & Support Research Into What Makes People Suicidal
JWSMF feels very honoured to have been chosen to be one of the charities benefiting from BPD GB 2014, and wishes Ed, Ben, Tom and their fantastic team every success on the day.

Estimated Value : ÂŁ25,000 Kindly Donated by Sandra Cronan for the benefit of HITS A stunning pair of early Art Deco diamond set drop earrings. The detachable old cut diamond tops (approx. 0.40 carats each) suspend articulated diamond pendants, mille-grain set thoughout and mounted in platinum, set with brilliant cuts, baguettes and a principle marquise cut diamond weighing approximately 0.75 carats each. English, circa 1920. These elegant ear pendants reflect perfectly the fashions of the 1920s, where design moved away from the sinuous curves of the Art Nouveau period, and the feminine floral swags of the Edwardian period, instead embracing geometry, symmetry and the sole use of platinum in the production of jewellery. Known as the ‘Jazz Age’ this was a very exciting time, with huge advances being made in all areas, from architecture, fashion, music, automobiles and most importantly here, with jewellery design. Being from the early part of the Deco period, these beautiful earrings retain a delicacy that later Art Deco jewels lacked with their very bold statement designs, and they retain an elegance so fitting of the early 1920s, that makes jewellery of this period ever popular and more importantly, wearable, today. www.sandracronan.com

MICK JAGGER FRAMED PHOTO Holland Park 1976 - edition 40/50 photographed by Carinthia West Value: £750 Kindly Donated by Carinthia West for the benefit of The Eve Branson Foundation I often used GAF film for shooting although I’m not sure why. Perhaps, because you could push it to produce an effect that was almost painterly. The result is several portraits that remind me of Dutch paintings where his faux fur coat seems to blend into the bark of the tree behind him. The shots were taken in the early evening of September 1976 and the light was that glorious golden glow that adds to the dreamy feel of the
15
picture. I think these are among my favorite photographs - perhaps because they are of Mick at the height of his beauty, fame and musical powers, yet still an enigma. When Mick and L’Wren Scott visited Marrakech, she told me that she particularly loved this photograph. She then put it on her website, so I would like to dedicate this photograph to her, in memory of her beauty and warmth. Carinthia West

Ibid donate tab - Support a project with the eve branson foundation
The Eve Branson Foundation was established to support education, employment and healthcare initiatives in the rural villages of Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains. Since the beginning, the Foundation has been dedicated to enhancing living standards in some of the most impoverished communities; very often these villages lack basic amenities, illiteracy can be as high as 98% and girls often leave school at 13 with little prospects for their futures. Our aim is to create positive opportunities, working in partnership with each village, to bring about transformations both economically and socially. We define needs and build a spirit of trust and collaboration. We have learned with patience and determination how to successfully combine our entrepreneurial spirit with the Berber culture.
Provide professional training for local women and girls; Purchase essential crafthouse materials & resources; Participate in the advancement of the rural mountain development schemes. “The philosophy of the foundation is to teach the local girls lifelong skills, removing the need to beg or ask for charity, for the Berbers are a proud, happy people. - Eve Branson

Ibid donate tab - Support a Project with GOSH Value: £25,000 Neuro navigation system for life-changing surgery Project name : Face Value Zoë is a bright, happy, cheerful seven year old who loves school and playing with her brothers. When Zoë was born she was diagnosed with Crouzon Syndrome – a disease where the bony plates of her head fuse, stopping her skull from growing normally. She has already undergone numerous operations, including a pioneering procedure to expand her skull using metal springs, and will require more vital surgery in the future. The Craniofacial team at Great Ormond Street Hospital have an ambitious five-year plan to revolutionise surgery for children, like Zoë, with craniofacial disorders. Our research will develop new techniques and equipment to improve the precision of
craniofacial surgery. Better surgery will mean a better chance in life for these children. To support the surgical team’s vital work, we urgently need a highly specialised neuro navigation system – a precision computerassisted technology used to “navigate” within a child’s skull during surgery. This equipment helps surgeons to perform safer, more precise procedures, to reduce risk and improve the recovery time for our young patients. With your support, the Craniofacial surgery team at Great Ormond Street Hospital could develop life-changing new techniques to help children like Zoë. www.gosh.nhs.uk
