Welcome to the eighth British Polo Day Abu Dhabi, presented by RJI Capital. We are honoured to be invited back to Ghantoot Racing and Polo Club. Founded in 1997 as a private, royal venue – based on the vision of the late president, HH Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan – it now operates under the patronage of his son, HH Sheikh Falah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. One of the most prestigious polo clubs in the world, it has played host to HRH Prince Charles and more recently, in 2014, hosted HRH Prince Harry for the Sentebale Polo Cup, which we continue to support tonight. This year, we are especially proud to celebrate the UK/UAE Year of Creative Collaboration which was launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and HRH The Prince of Wales in October 2016, with HH Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak al Nahyan giving a stirring speech stating the aims of increasing the visibility of the UK in the UAE and vice versa in order to give greater focus, depth and contemporary relevance to the long-standing relationship between the two nations. The unique cultural programme has been initiated to strengthen existing relationships and broker new ones between people, institutions and businesses. The British Polo Days in the UAE provide such a platform, with the best of British and the UAE on display tonight. As ever, we are indebted to all the partners for making this event possible. Polo is by no means new to the Middle East. It is believed that polo began in Persia as far back as the 5th century BC. However, the modern game as we know it, was rediscovered in India in the 19th Century by the British Army, and our main match tonight features players from the British Army playing Ghantoot. Before that, we will see the Oxbridge team play against the Abu Dhabi team. We hope you enjoy British Polo Day Abu Dhabi. The British Polo Day UAE Committee

All the King’s Horses They call polo The sporT of kings for a reason – it has always been played by royalty. From the moment the Persian royal family adopted the game to train the King’s Elite Cavalry, right down to our own princes, crowned heads have being riding chukkas harder than anyone. King Edward VIII was a keen player – during a tour of India in 1921 he introduced his friend, the future Earl Mountbatten of Burma, to the sport. The earl encouraged his nephew, the Duke of Edinburgh, to play and His Royal Highness co-founded the Household Brigade Polo Club. The Prince of Wales was given his first polo pony, San Quinina, at the age of 15 and first played in a team captained by his father in 1963. Both his sons, Princes William and Harry, are now keen players. Why have kings and princes always loved the sport? At Royal Salute we’d hazard a guess that it’s because the magical air surrounding monarchs finds an echo on the polo field, where man and beast – like sovereign and nation – bond to become something magnificent.

The centaur forward

The rider and the pony combine to make one player, argues Facundo Pieres. He’s the Lionel Messi of polo, a Royal Salute ambassador and supporter of the Latin America team today. “A great polo player knows the pony is 70% of the game and moves in harmony with the horse, turning and stopping with the slightest nudge of the leg or the arm,” he explains. “A bad polo player is always fighting the horse, wrenching it this way and that to get it to do their bidding.” Pieres carefully selects 10 horses for every game, changing ponies two or three times every chukka and choosing the best horses to match his opponent’s stable. “But I have four who I am perfectly in tune with, who give me confidence, who make me play better and who know my game as well as I do,” he grins, his face lighting up like a kid discussing Christmas. “I try to play these ponies at the end of every game. One, Magnifica, was the horse I was on when I scored the golden goal to win the Queen’s Cup – one of the proudest moments of my career. Could I have scored that goal on another horse? I’m not sure.”

Wild at heart

Fit for polo?

Training a polo pony takes time – and at Royal Salute, that’s something we understand. Our youngest bottle, after all, contains whiskies that are at least 21 years old. “You can rush a polo pony’s training, but you’ll get a horse that plays worse and has a shorter career,” explains Royal Salute ambassador and England’s prince of polo Malcolm Borwick, who’s backing England, of course.

Royal Salute delights in the dedication and craft of polo players. But we realise this is far from an overnight game. Players swing a 500g mallet with wild abandon, and require an iron core, rock-hard shoulders and sturdy back to avoid injury. Martin Perez at Fitness for Polo suggests the following pro-player exercises – which also promise washboard abs and a powerful stride…

Borwick explains that all horses race in the wild – running in a herd to find out which is the fastest, strongest alpha male. Polo ponies require something more. Although a pony won’t take to the field in a competition until they’re seven, they start training before they’re two – experiencing to check and turn and run and stop. They play their first friendly game aged four, learning the pace and bustle of the field at a slower pace. “You can play a pony in a competition aged six or just over,” Borwick explains. “But it’s far better if you wait.” We couldn’t agree more.

Squat and turn: Put a pillow between your knees and stand 1ft away from the wall. Squat while squeezing the pillow, and rotate your trunk from side to side, touching the wall with both hands each time. Repeat eight times. Overhead side slams: Raise a medicine ball above your head. Rotate your trunk to your right and slam the ball to the floor. Squat, grab the ball, and repeat on the other side. Repeat five times. Lunge with twist: Stand with legs hip-width apart and hands behind your head. Step forwards into a lunge until the rear knee almost touches the floor. Rotate towards the lunging leg. Repeat on the other side for two sets of three lunges per side.

DESIGNED BY WORLD-RENOWNED ARCHITECTS AND DEVELOPED BY BEST-IN-CLASS LANDSCAPERS AND CRAFTSMEN, CHELSEA BARRACKS BRINGS 13 ACRES OF ARCHITECTURAL QUALITY AND BOTANICAL ELEGANCE THAT HAS NOT BEEN SEEN IN LONDON SINCE THOMAS CUBITT FIRST IMAGINED BELGRAVIA ALMOST 200 YEARS AGO.

R

anging from spacious apartments to magnificent townhouses, Chelsea Barracks combines five acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, with world-class dining and state-of the-ar t residents’ leisure and wellness facilities. The residences will weave themselves into the very fabric of Belgravia, with every home looking out on to stunning new garden squares. Chelsea Barracks will provide greater amenities, lateral space and scale, which is simply not available elsewhere in London. It is this attention to detail that makes Chelsea Barracks unrivalled in quality and exclusivity. Of the seven garden squares, Garrison Square will form the hear tbeat of Chelsea Barracks, providing a space for community life to flourish. At its hear t is the Grade II listed Garrison Chapel, a tangible reminder of Chelsea Barracks’ rich military history. Its unusual Romanesque-Byzantine design, with

brick banding and stone decoration, stands out as one of the few surviving chapels of its kind in London. The eight ‘petals’ of the Chapel’s beautiful glass window form the inspiration behind the unique Chelsea Barracks emblem. Steeped in history, the rose has long been synonymous with English tradition, leading to the commission of the Chelsea Barracks rose. With its delicate multi-petal form and distinctive red colour, the rose will feature prominently across the garden squares. From its honourable beginnings as an army base for many of the country’s most decorated troops, to its transformation into one of the world’s most elite neighbourhoods, Chelsea Barracks is a development like no other, having represented prestige for more than 150 years. Now taking its place as the renewed hear t of SW1, Chelsea Barracks will become the missing piece to the magnificent jigsaw that is Belgravia.

Their speed off the mark and technical build quality ensure a thrilling game of Bicycle Polo from the first chukka to the last! Bicycle Polo was invented in County Wicklow, Ireland, in 1891 by retired cyclist, Richard J. Mecredy. Two centuries on, Bicycle Polo is being played in over 17 countries worldwide and was officially recognised by the International Cycle Union (UCI) in 2001.

OXBRIDGE POLO TEAM TEAM INFORMATION

TEAM CREST

The Oxford University Polo Club was founded in 1874 by undergraduates from Christ Church and Brasenose Colleges, three years after the introduction of polo to Britain. Led by Mr. Walter Long (later Viscount Long of Wraxall and First Lord of the Admiralty), the first match was held on the 1st of July 1877, and was contested by its two founding colleges amid considerable pomp and ceremony.

PARTNER

The great success of that day encouraged the players to establish a Varsity match with the Cambridge University Polo Club. This Varsity match is the oldest polo fixture in the western world and was first played at the Bullingdon Cricket Ground in Oxford on the 27th of November 1878. It is also the oldest continuing polo fixture in the western world. During the late sixties and early seventies, polo at Oxford enjoyed a purple patch, winning the annual match eight times in a row. British Polo Day Abu Dhabi 2017 sees Stuart Wrigley from Oxford and Sam Browne from Cambridge unite in the Oxbridge team to take on Faris Al Yabhouni’s Abu Dhabi team.

BRITISH POLO DAY PHILANTHROPY $2,059,220 USD RAISED TO-DATE In countries all over the world, polo has a long history of raising significant funds for worthy causes. Wherever possible, British Polo Day is entirely committed to bringing to bear the full weight of its partners, its network and its creative talent to this end. A ‘gold standard’ approach has always been sought. Every pound /dollar raised goes directly to the chosen charities in each country, with no foundation or administration fee applied. All BPD sourced lot proceeds are evenly distributed and all charity-sourced lots go directly to those charities. -British Polo Day Great Britain 2016 marked the milestone not only of 50 events held but also of banking over $2mUSD for various remarkable and worthy causes from a standing start in 2011. Philanthropy has been integral to British Polo Day right from the start. Our first British event saw over £85,000 raised with Prince Harry for Sentebale, hosted by Lord Lloyd Webber at his immaculate Watership Down private ground. There was a time when we were raising more money for charity than we were generating in revenue as a business, which was bonkers but in a brilliant way. British Polo Day has always sought to raise funds for causes that resonate with our hosts in each country, as a gesture of gratitude for the gift of their support and patronage. Alongside this ongoing approach, we are increasingly also incorporating working closely with entrepreneurial billionaire philanthropists, who have global grand transformative challenges and change in mind. These individuals have chosen a problem to fix, coupled with a razor sharp and often disruptive approach to achieving this end. Alongside the ongoing benefits of funds raised and mutual community build, British Polo Day’s sister business BE Social Global aims to massively amplify impact on social media channels, which ensures an awareness bounce but also further engagement. This is especially resonant with the younger generation, who are keen to get involved in their own way and are increasingly looking towards those leading philanthropists seeking to create real change, as opposed to say the less nimble approach that might traditionally be taken by governments or institutions. THE SUMBA FOUNDATION

The Sumba Foundation was founded in 2001 to lessen the harsh impacts of poverty on the Indonesian island of Sumba. The Foundation aims to achieve this with a focus on: access to potable water, ending malaria, promoting general health and improving education - while preserving and respecting the cultural traditions of Sumba’s people. We are confident that building a foundation for a better life is the way to end shortage on the island and that given the right tools, the people of Sumba will have the means to create sustainable economies to better their own livelihoods. Therefore our aid philosophy is to help people to help themselves. We do not believe in giving on-going handouts or spending large sums of money to solve problems. We believe that small, well-managed, cost efficient projects, harvest the best results. Our aid plan is based on more than sixteen years of first hand knowledge regarding the island and its people. During those years we have closely observed the Sumbanese way of life and consulted Sumba’s residents about their most urgent needs and aspirations. We have also gathered information from anthropologists, foreign volunteers, aid workers and the government. The Sumba Foundation is not simply about sharing our resources with those in need but about getting involved in the world around us and affecting positive change, which in this case is all at once eye opening and deeply humbling. Simply put our work is rooted in the knowledge that the most effective action must come from within the context of our own lives and hearts. As members of the human family, each of us is responsible and we thank you in advance for your donations, which are critical to our ongoing success. To learn more visit, www.sumbafoundation.org

OUR GOAL

OUR KEY AREAS OF WORK

Women and Health Alliance (WAHA) International works to support and strengthen health services in the countries where maternal health needs are greatest.

Promoting delivery with a midwife and rapid access to Caesarean sections in the event of obstructed labour. This includes training key frontline health workers, improving health infrastructure, and implementing innovative strategies to facilitate referral and treatment of obstetric emergencies;

Our goal is simple: to ensure that all women have a safe pregnancy and motherhood. We believe in the power of partnerships to get things done. That’s why at WAHA International, we work together with university teaching hospitals, national associations of midwives, obstetricians and gynaecologists, community groups and policymakers. We believe in promoting a southto-south knowledge exchange to find the most innovative and effective strategies to ensure that women have access to skilled help during and after the delivery of their baby.

Integrating fistula surgery and treatment of postpartum complications into the routine training and practice of gynaecologists, obstetricians and urologists through our partnerships with university teaching hospitals in Africa; Mobilising communities through information, education and communication to overcome the social and cultural barriers to using maternal and child health services.

WAHA International was established by Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan Al Nahyan as a response to the unacceptably high maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity rates in many parts of Africa and Asia.

SENTEBALE

Sentebale is a charity founded by Prince Harry of the United Kingdom, together with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, that helps the most vulnerable children in Lesotho and Botswana get the support they need to lead healthy and productive lives. The charity was founded in 2006, after Prince Harry spent part of his gap year in Lesotho in 2004. Tom Hudson has been supporting Sentebale in the UAE for many years, to raise vital funds towards their work supporting children affected by HIV. Both Tom and his wife Jess Hudson were invited to the opening of Sentebale’s ’Mamohato Children’s Centre in 2015, where they got to see firsthand the amazing work being undertaken in Lesotho, which has the second highest rate of HIV in the world. Next month Tom will be running the London Marathon to continue the support for the Charity. The 2014 Sentebale Polo Cup was held here at the Ghantoot Polo & Racing Club, and we are pleased to continue this association and support between the UAE and Sentebale through this auction. We are delighted to have two great African auction lots in the Cape View Clifton and the Safari Collection, and thank you in advance for giving generously in support of this vital work.
