W E LCOME N OT E Welcome to British Polo Day GB 2017 : The 60th Event no less. As ever, there is great gratitude and thanks to extend to our hosts the Schwarzenbach family, for their ongoing support and generosity. The River Field is arguably the finest polo ground in the world, especially at this time in the summer season. It is quite something to travel far & wide each year; and to then call this glorious spot home. “If we want things to stay as they are, things will have to change.” - The Leopard, by GiuseppeTomasi di Lampedusa This famous line from a perennial favourite book, neatly defines the paradox inherent in how British Polo Day maintains – and hopefully improves upon – charm & allure year-on-year. The events themselves continue to bring fascinating people into the fold, with the community at large characterised by dynamic and interesting-types of broadminded inclination. Increasingly, this is now sparking wider interactions that span a range of passion points and opportunities. We remain indebted to the Partner base – representing over 2,000 years of heritage cumulatively – for their steadfast trust and confidence. From what began around “key influence” in Dubai back in 2009, this has enabled every aspect of realising an invitation only vision, reaching 16 countries since foundation. Title Partner RJI Capital and Ron Wahid remain at the fore and the recent addition of Chelsea Barracks, VistaJet and Yachting Partners International (YPI) has already had an entirely elevatory impact. Mark Vestey was the very definition of living life to the full, especially since his hunting accident in 1984, right up until his death late last year at 73. He once said about polo that: “The trick is to play with people you like, because it makes winning, and especially losing, a lot more fun.” As a life lesson, it is one that we will look to keep firmly in mind. We wish you all a splendid day and thank you to all those present and absent who have done so much to bring us to this milestone. The British Polo Day Committee

W E LCOME N OT E Dear Friends,
It is my honour to welcome you to British Polo Day Great Britain 2017, where the Black Bears Polo Team will be playing the KIG Polo Team. While British Polo Day celebrates the sport all over the world, it is the Great Britain event that embodies the true spirit of polo. British Polo Day Great Britain brings together the facets of UK society that make the world “go round”: the best and the brightest from the worlds of business, politics, art and philanthropy. These individuals have each become believers – as I have – in the authenticity and importance of the environment and community that British Polo Day creates for each of its events and beyond.
RJI Capital celebrates its third year of partnership with British Polo Day in 2017, and it has been a wonderful journey of discovering new synergies between our business and this unique international network dedicated to British heritage and values. In the post-Brexit era, I am confident that Great Britain will remain as strong as ever, and we are pleased to contribute to such a powerful symbol of British resilience and integrity.
I look forward to experiencing the iconic 60th British Polo Day event with you.
M. Ron Wahid 11

MARK EVANS ARTIST
‘Grace Thunders’ is an installation by Mark Evans that dominates the lobby of the St Regis, Kuala Lumpur. The piece is a hand-etched leather ar twork, comprising of 18 full-hides and is a composition that took Evans nearly five years, and the risk of his own life to create. It was in 2011, when Evans began to explore the world of polo and engage with the players themselves, that he was hit with an epiphany, and a question that would change his whole perception of the game.
“I wasn’t so much interested in viewing the game from the safety of the sidelines, from the comfor t of the crowds, I wanted to know what it felt like to experience the raw danger on the field? Tonnes of flesh, muscle of beast and rider flying at me. Man against man, horse against horse. It’s primal, it’s aggressive, and it’s ageless. It’s a fight at its very core and I realized that that’s exactly where I needed to be to capture the energy of the game. Right in the hear t of the battle, in the epicentre of the action. I suddenly knew my camera must view the game from the single most perilous point on the field, from the ball’s point of view.”
In order to achieve this dangerous imagery, Evans had to first cross the forbidden line of safety, and find a polo club that would allow him to do so. After many failed attempts - and clubs questioning his sanity - Evans eventually teamed up with Anthony Fanshawe, who immediately caught the vision. Fanshawe allowed Evans the freereign necessary to capture the authenticity of movement and energy required to create a masterpiece. To photograph the specific imagery, Evans lay in the ground on the polo field, buried in grass and soil, the ball was placed 3 feet from the camera lens, and the riders battled to swing and shoot directly at him. As the ponies and riders thundered overhead, just inches above his camera and his cranium, death or severe injury was close. The risk paid off, the immense skill of the riders ensured Evans remained unscathed and what he captured was a truly original vision of the game.

MARK EVANS ARTIST
And so Grace Thunders was born, a perfect allegory, depicting the two contrasting sides to the game of polo, the extremes of its nature, the grace, the beauty and yet the danger of the fight. As Ben Vestey states, “It is a spor t of great juxtapositions that a player must come to terms with, both thunderously thrilling and pirouettingly precise.”
At fifty square metres, the sheer scale of the works meant that this project was utterly submersive. As guests walk into the lobby of the St Regis, they are faced with two vast pieces, each over five metres high on opposite walls of the reception. Five giant horses and riders tower overhead, charging toward the viewer from right and left. Horse hair blurs past, hooves churn up the grass and polo sticks are raised, poised to strike. Riders and horses bump into one another in this rapid onrush. All energy and movement is directed at the ball, the exact position where the viewer is standing.
Mark Evans has created the world’s largest polo diptych and by placing the viewer in between both pieces, as the composition’s energy leaps across the hotel lobby from one panel of the diptych to the other, the viewer becomes the conduit through which the electric charge must pass.
“I wanted the viewer to walk into the space and be immediately swept up into the dramatic moment, with horses all charging directly toward you. My desire was to place the viewer on the field, in the heat of the action, and by doing so, create something breathtaking, a visceral view of the spor t that had not been seen before.”
Mark Evans is currently producing a new series of polo works and a book to document the journey of the creation of these landmark pieces.

DESIGNED AND DEVELOPED BY WORLD-RENOWNED ARCHITECTS, BEST-IN-CLASS LANDSCAPERS AND FINE CRAFTSMEN, CHELSEA BARRACKS BRINGS 12.8 ACRES OF LUXURY AND BOTANICAL ELEGANCE TO BELGRAVIA.
F
rom its honourable beginnings as an army base for many of the country’s most decorated troops, to its transformation into one of the world’s most elite neighbourhoods, Chelsea Barracks is a development like no other. Ranging from spacious apartments and penthouses to magnificent townhouses, the residences will weave seamlessly into the fabric of Belgravia, providing unprecedented space and scale; with world-class dining, amenities, state-of the-art residents’ leisure and wellness facilities. Five acres of the prestigious 12.8 acre site will be dedicated to beautifully masterplanned landscapes and the introduction of seven new garden squares, each with its own distinct character. Just as London squares are steeped in history, the rose has long been synonymous with English tradition, thus leading to the
commission of the Chelsea Barracks rose. With its delicate multi-petal form and distinctive red colour, the rose will feature prominently across the garden squares. Of the seven garden squares, Garrison Square will form the heartbeat of Chelsea Barracks, providing a space for community life to flourish. At its heart, a Grade II listed Garrison Chapel built in Romanesque-Byzantine style, one of the few surviving chapels of its kind in London. The eight ‘petals’ of the Chapel’s beautiful glass window form the inspiration behind the Chelsea Barracks emblem. An elite group of architects and designers have been assembled to deliver this historic development. Their unique collaboration will ensure its reputation, and ultimate legacy, as both the most prestigious development in London and one of the finest the world has seen.

BROMPTON BIKE POLO Brompton Bicycle is the largest bike manufacturer in the UK, with its factory in Greenford, West London. Brompton’s history can be traced back to 1975, when the British inventor, Andrew Ritchie, created prototypes of Brompton bikes from his bedroom in South Kensington, London. The company remains in private hands and is now led by Will Butler-Adams OBE, though Andrew Ritchie continues to act as Technical Director. Today, Brompton bikes are sold in 44 export markets. Brompton bikes are most often seen flying around cities, but have proven to be great steeds in the game of Bicycle Polo in recent years. Their speed off the mark and technical build quality ensure a thrilling game of Bicycle Polo from the first chukka to the last! Bicycle Polo was invented in County Wicklow, Ireland, in 1891 by retired cyclist, Richard J. Mecredy. Two centuries on, Bicycle Polo is being played in over 17 countries worldwide and was officially recognised by the International Cycle Union (UCI) in 2001.

AN INTERVIEW WITH CHADWICK DELANEY - MANAGING DIRECTOR OF JUSTERINI & BROOKS -
Tell us about the early years - how did you become one of the country’s finest wine merchants and be granted a coveted Royal Warrant? We were founded by an Italian from Bologna, who came to London chasing the affection of an opera singer. He opened Justerini’s next to the Royal Opera House, then on Pall Mall. He failed in his amorous pursuits, but the quality of the wines he was importing came to the attention of St. James’s Palace. The firm supplied the wines for King George III Coronation and was granted its first Royal Warrant in 1761. We’ve now supplied wines to the Royal Household for eight successive monarchs to the present day.
Which corners of the world are you seeing most interest from? Justerini & Brooks looks after a global client base. We began looking after overseas customers way back in 1866, initially in New York. Hong Kong started in 1976, with Singapore in 1980. There has been an explosion of wealth around the world over the past 15 years, which has led to the emergence of new private clients keen to appreciate and enjoy luxury products and experiences. Fine wine is almost peerless and limitless in its potential to deliver this intrigue and enjoyment; and today we have collectors based across 42 countries. For the layman, what single piece of advice would you give? The world of fine wine is fascinating in its complexity, rewarding in its thrilling quality. Seeking out a top merchant as a trusted guide through the regions, the growers, the vintages, will undoubtedly lead to a wine that charms you and sparks a lifetime of exploration and drinking pleasure.
What in your mind has been the most seismic change in the wine world to have unfolded during your career? Domaine-bottled Burgundy - Justerini & Brooks is the biggest importer into the UK, shipping from nearly 60 producers every year. Also, increased focus on the top Italian wines. Barolo has captured the interest of Burgundy collectors looking for the next big thing and there is much anticipation for our Brunello 2010 release this month.
British Polo Day is all about the ‘young guns’ making waves internationally. Tell us about some of the young and influential wine makers that you work with? Our buyers put considerable effort into unearthing hidden talent from the burgeoning number of fresh, bright winemakers. These are growers committed to making artisan wines of balance and drinkability, like Burgundian brothers Marc and Alex Bachelet; and Thierry Pillot, who is turning Domaine Paul Pillot into one of the greats of Chassagne. I am also excited about the recent generational changes at Chateau Lafleur and Petrus, the two leading wines of Pomerol.
What view do you hold that runs most counter to any prevailing opinion when it comes to the enjoyment of wine? I believe firmly in exactly that, the enjoyment of fine wine. The reward, even for investment wines is the pleasure of experiencing what’s inside the bottle. And I’m sure, given the lengths they go to, our producers would agree. The wine region, vineyard and/or producer that is currently exciting you the most? We recently hosted a dinner in London to celebrate 200 years of the Comte de Liger-Belair family at the Château de Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy. Louis-Michel, Le Comte de Liger-Belair, is making spellbinding wines. We tasted eight from eight different terroirs, each one stunning and creating a memory that will live long. I also adore the wines of Roberto Voerzio in Barolo – he’s one of the most gifted wine makers of his generation.
British Polo Day is delighted to have Justerini & Brooks as its official wine partner. This is a rare partnership for you – what compelled you to become involved? British Polo Day is an international celebration of British luxury and I am delighted to support the entrepreneurial spirit of the founders. The events are first class and highly personal, which links naturally with our approach.

ON TRANQUILITY OF MIND BY THE ESSAYIST PLUTARCH 46-120 AD
He rejects the idea that tranquility is best achieved by doing nothing, as if the best advice for a sick man was never to leave his bed. Likewise, he does not believe that any one par ticular way of life is by definition free of pain, since if you are the sor t of person who is unable to make right use of circumstances, a change of life will not of itself alter your disposition. The key to tranquility, argues Plutarch, is reason and wisdom. He quotes Plato, comparing life to a game of dice. There is no point in raging at the way the dice fall since there is nothing we can do about it; we must therefore make the best of what we have, and refuse to react overemotionally either to good for tune or to bad. ‘From the grimmest circumstances we must draw something that suits us and is useful.’ Plutarch now gives some examples, star ting with the man who threw a stone at a dog, missed, hit his stepmother, thought about it and concluded, ‘Not so bad after all,’ WRITTEN BY A PETER JONES A magazine cutting kept for years

A LIFE IN AND AROUND POLO “The trick is to play with people you like, which makes winning and especially losing a lot more fun.” This was the advice my father gave to both sisters and I, aged 12, 8 and 6 respectively. Colin Dhillon had called quite rightly demanding that dad send the three of us over immediately, as Satnam needed some other people to play with (or more appropriately “near” in the early years) at home, and the rest is a happy lifetime in polo. It was only as the years passed that I would need to field questions from time to time about why we had been encouraged to play polo after my father’s hunting accident in 1984? It had simply never crossed our minds when we were younger. Clearly there were cigars to be smoked, there was port to be drunk and the three of us were an excellent excuse to get back into polo after Uncle Sam retired, having deputised for his brother in a Foxcote shirt for The Queen’s Cup Final victory of 1984. My mother even took to the field as her children’s ponies began to retire.

International Match Windsor (1977)
Stick & Ball (1984)
It used to be endlessly frustrating quizzing him about the not insignificant feat of winning 4 Gold Cups and 6 Queen’s Cups, as his recollection of the actual polo matches was famously hazy - when compared to the minutiae with which most of my friends recall the ups and downs - but he vividly remembered the characters on the scene and the fathomless amounts of fun that was seemingly had by all of those lucky enough to be there then. It was a passage of polo that saw the end of the post-war period and preceded the dawn of the professional era with Gonzalito Pieres and Carlos Gracida coming to the fore. A time to be grateful and a time of the beginnings of change. There is something else that has become abundantly clear in recent years. Quite naturally, there are many in polo with an “angle” of sorts. As Chairman of Cirencester Park Polo Club and then The HPA, he always self-evidently just wanted the best for polo in the broadest sense and this earned him a considerable amount of respect and reputation along the way. Belligerent problems, when they regularly arose, were often dealt with over long lunches - a flashback to an era already bygone - with the offer / threat of a repeat lunch extended in the event that said problem had not sufficiently gone away. Being trusted as predominantly interested in the interests of polo in the broadest sense, he was always it seems a fair mediator and peerless diplomat in such matters. This umbrella love of polo no doubt also helpful when it came to finding middle ground, with the over-large personalities involved often somewhat averse to pitching a tent there. Through a combination of success on the field and then selfless service off it, the legacy stands of a universally loved figure within the polo community. Although this would not necessarily have been entirely to my father’s liking, as this good opinion leaves no need for a famously prodigious lunch.

“As ever - as far as it is within your gift to do so - please bid with reckless abandon for the supremely delicious Lots, donated for the benefit of these life affirming causes that we love and admire so much.
In countries all over the world, polo has a long history of raising significant funds for worthy causes. Wherever possible, British Polo Day is entirely committed to bringing to bear the full weight of its partners, its network and its creative talent to this end. A ‘gold standard’ approach has always been sought. Every pound / dollar raised goes directly to the chosen charities in each country, with no foundation or administration fee applied. All BPD sourced lot proceeds are evenly distributed and all charity-sourced lots go directly to those charities. British Polo Day Great Britain 2016 marked the milestone not only of 50 events held but also of banking over $2m USD to for various remarkable and worthy causes from a standing start in 2011. Philanthropy has been integral to British Polo Day right from the start. Our first British event saw over
£85,000 raised with Prince Harry for Sentebale, hosted by Lord Lloyd Webber at his immaculate Watership Down private ground. There was a time when we were raising more money for charity than we were generating in revenue as a business, which was bonkers but in a brilliant way.
Over $2million USD raised to-date British Polo Day has always sought to raise funds for causes that resonate with our hosts in each country, as a gesture of gratitude for the gift of their support and patronage. Alongside this ongoing approach, we are increasingly also incorporating working closely with entrepreneurial billionaire philanthropists, who have global grand transformative challenges and change in mind. These individuals have chosen a problem to fix, coupled
with a razor sharp and often disruptive approach to achieving this end. Alongside the ongoing benefits of funds raised and mutual community build, British Polo Day’s sister business BE Social Global aims to massively amplify impact on social media channels, which ensures an awareness bounce but also further engagement. This is especially resonant with the younger generation, who are keen to get involved in their own way and are increasingly looking towards those leading philanthropists seeking to create real change, as opposed to say the less nimble approach that might traditionally be taken by governments or institutions. As ever - as far as it is within your gift to do so - please bid with reckless abandon for the supremely delicious Lots, donated for the benefit of these life affirming causes that we love and admire so much.

‘’Water for Life’’ United Nations – Water Best Practices Award in the “best participatory, communication, awareness-raising and education practices” category Project Innovation Award Development (2013); International Water Association International Water Resources Association Award for innovation
We’ve determined clear criteria by which to identify where in the world we can make the most difference. The ability to ensure that we will have a significant positive impact on improved access to water and sanitation is key, since it is at the heart of our mission.
– G I V E R G Y D O N AT E TA B – Equally essential is that all main stakeholders demonstrate their willingness to actively participate in the process, in order to make it a sustainable endeavour. The civil society must also be sufficiently organized, to take on a leadership role in the implementation of the project and to provide the required follow-up, to guarantee its sustainability. Lastly, a stable political and social context is an essential prerequisite for undertaking any action in favour of development. A successful project requires a democratic political context where it is possible to engage in constructive dialogue with civil society, and allow the population to take an active role in its implementation. enerally speaking, people don’t realise that spinal cord injury worsens after an accident. In most cases patients lose control of further bodily functions in a process called secondary injury, which can be even more serious than the initial injury.
T
F
To date, it has not been possible to monitor the damage within the spinal cord itself, but now two researchers from London - whose field of expertise is pressure within the injured spinal cord - are striving to change this. Professor Marios Papadopoulos and Doctor Samira Saadoun, from St George’s University Hospital in London, have focused their research on ways to limit secondary injury, to prevent intact nerves from dying and to preserve these important bodily functions.
– G I V E R G Y D O N AT E TA B – After they have stabilized the spine of a trial participant, Papadopoulos and Saadoun place probes on the surface of the injured spinal cord, allowing them to assess whether the cells are still alive, whether they’re getting enough oxygen and whether toxic substances are building up inside the tissue. T h e s e probes remain in the patient’s body for a week, during w h i c h time the data is fully investigated. An increase in pressure, in combination with a worsening of tissue metabolism, presents a warning sign. The pressure must be relieved, meaning that parts of the vertebrae are surgically removed in order to give the swelling more room. Papadopoulos and Saadoun have already successfully monitored 42 patients and
found that as soon as the pressure is optimized (in most cases) the ability to feel below the injury site has improved and the level of paralysis has decreased. Papadopoulos dares to be optimistic and looks forward to a time when their technique can become more widespread. In the mean time the study will continue (for at l e a s t another t h r e e years) and all findings will support the Wings for Life mission - to find a cure for spinal cord injury. Your support of our mission, financial or otherwise, is always greatly appreciated and please rest assured that 100% of the money you donate will go directly to spinal cord injury research.
