Enjoy Royal Salute Responsibly

welcome note

Dear Guests, Welcome to Jodhpur, a city synonymous with polo, for the 5th Anniversary British Polo Day India, presented by Royal Salute, in association with The Umaid Bhawan Palace. Lord Louis Mountbatten played his first game of polo in Jodhpur when he accompanied Edward, The Prince of Wales, on his 1921-1922 tour of India and the Far East. Mountbatten had to step in at the last minute to replace an injured player and although he only hit the ball three or four times he wrote in his diary: I’ve gone absolutely dippy about polo, which in my opinion is the best game in the world.” He in turn, taught his nephew, Prince Philip, who taught his son, Prince Charles, who in turn taught Princes William and Harry. This is just one example of the many ways that India and Great Britain have been connected with polo ever since the revival of the sport in the nineteenth century. The seeds of polo in Jodhpur were sown in 1889 when Sir Pratap Singh, younger brother of the Maharaja and Prime Minister of Jodhpur State, invited Col. Stuart Beatson of the Bengal Lancers to help him raise the Jodhpur Lancers. Polo was played for the first time here and we are delighted to be continuing that tradition with the British Army team once again playing the President’s Bodyguard. Our second match is new for this year, and we are excited to stage The Royal Salute Palace Trophy featuring Jodhpur vs Mundota Fort & Palace, Jaipur. The final key fixture this week is Eton v Mayo College. Eton’s connection with India goes back centuries. Eleven viceroys of India have been educated at Eton as well as five Governor-Generals and three High Commissioners, and of course, His Highness The Maharaja Gaj Singh II Of Marwar-Jodhpur whose kind patronage of this event we are indebted to. Mayo College is also known as the “Eton of India” and has a long friendship with its British counterpart. We welcome all these teams that have such strong connections with Britain and India. We thank all our partners for making it possible and hope, above all, that you have a great time!

AN I N TE RVIE W WITH VA DIM G R IG O R IA N - ROYAL SALUTE BRAND DIRECTOR What are your impressions of British Royalty? I am quite a big fan of the British Royal family – some would say I’m a monarchist. However, I do believe that the values the British monarchy represents are essential in our modern world. For example, the monarchy has this “freedom of being” that many people in power don’t have. They can cultivate ideas and visions in an unrestricted way, especially because they have nothing to prove or gain. For Royal Salute, we have shared values with royalty such as continuity, generosity, magic and the search for perfection. We chose to celebrate these values and integrated them in all we do. What is so special about the way Brits do things? What sets us apart (when thinking of things like BPD. Wimbledon. Henley. Lords. Etc.? The British do things quite differently to most. Some of the most iconic events like Wimbledon and Henley showcase something I call ‘elevated Britishness.’ There is this authentic approach in its execution without the fuss, which embeds them in British culture. I also appreciate small acts of subversion that sets Brits apart from the French and Italians. You will see spectators in high couture but wearing wellies. There is that sense of eccentricity and confidence that is unique to the British. Everything is pushed to the edge, almost to the point of being over the top. Take the idea of the ‘fascinator.’ Aesthetically, it’s not what you’d envision. Even the word ‘fascinator’ is interesting – are you fascinating who? What? Where and how? Your view of luxury in sport etc - the Do’s & Dont’s It’s not about injecting luxury in sport. There are just certain sports that are associated with luxury and its corresponding lifestyle. Polo is a perfect example of this because it’s very aesthetically appealing, has a strong history and is simply a very expensive sport to practice – unless, of course, you’re a professional. Luxury brands are then therefore attracted to polo for these reasons. Fundamentally, luxury is about high quality. If we think about spectators in sport, we must contribute high quality experiences to them. It can be transforming an ordinary marquee experience resembling a provincial wedding into a beautiful, inspiring countryside tent. An excellent example of this is the unique experience for our special guests at the Royal Salute Coronation Cup. We collaborated with two creative British gentlemen – artist Marcos Lutyens and Chelsea Flower Show garden designer Stephen Woodhams to create Royal Salute’s Secret Garden – a picnic designed to reverse the flow of time. Guests dined amongst flowers recreating the floral displays at HRH Queen Elizabeth II’s 1953 coronation handpicked by Stephen to celebrate the British love affair with horticulture. Marcos developed a “Hampering of Time” Hamper – recalling the elegant, staged picnics of Regency England. The tailored handmade picnic basket featured Lutyens’ time inspired handmade games including a curious ‘left handed’ clock that makes time flow backwards.

Don’ts? Simply, bad quality. Some examples include the use of artificial materials that I like to call “plastic fantastic,” serving average food and overbranding where it starts to resemble a trade show versus an original, memorable experience. For me, it’s about doing simple things with taste and best quality, while placing a lot of attention to detail. The Art of partnership - and how to pick the best partners in sponsorship etc. For me, it’s all about people and alignment of passions. I only want to work with the right people who have similar values to our brand. It always needs to be based on mutual respect and not about just money changing hands to obtain mutual benefits. Good partnerships are about the desire to develop things together – to be co-creators and collaborators. The past two years working with British Polo Day has been an exciting journey of discovery and learning together. We at Royal Salute continue to gain knowledge of the sport and its community after almost a decade of being a passionate supporter of polo globally. As British Polo Day continues to provide a unique celebration of Britishness, we look forward to a mutual evolution whereby we can continue to deliver artistically led, creative experiences to British Polo Day guests worldwide. The role of Great Britain in the world of Luxury. How does RS & BPD fit in. Let me share this quote from Alexander McQueen that sums up my thoughts perfectly: ‘As a place for inspiration, Britain is the best… You’re inspired by the anarchy in this country.’ British culture is absolutely conducive for luxury for two reasons. Firstly, it is still a hierarchal society, with royalty, monarchy and aristocracy planted in the social order that is still meaningful. Secondly, British culture remains traditional – both in having continuity and maintaining cross-generational connections, as well as simultaneously being driven by rigid rules, procedures and conventions. As a member of British society, you cannot transcend these two points and as a result there is an enormous force in culture to subvert rules. In the past, we’ve seen the aristocracy revolt and in modern times, it’s artists, designers and musicians. Hence, you get movements like punk and the Young British Artists group with amazing transgressive creativity. This creativity is fundamental to luxury and without it, luxury is not possible. In my opinion, brand ‘Britannia’ is one of the most attractive national brands today. Britain has completely evolved to become the global capital of culture and creativity. For Royal Salute, British Royalty is the strongest cultural symbol of Britain, which truly embodies the country. It is this fascination with British Royalty that inspired Sam Bronfman to create Royal Salute in honour of the Coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

AN I N TE RVIE W WITH VA DIM G R IG O R IA N - ROYAL SALUTE BRAND DIRECTOR What is the future of high end whiskies? The future of whisky is all about high quality, purely emphasised through the liquid, the whisky. That’s why we’re working on blending philosophy. We search for the best ingredients possible and work with the most creative team to push our innovation to a new frontier. We have recently appointed the brand’s first ever Product Creative Director, Barnabé Fillion. He is the noted new generation French olfactory artist who will work in collaboration with Royal Salute’s expert master blending team on new product concepts, which marry experimental blending techniques inspired by the worlds of art, philosophy and nature. This also allows for our marketing to remain authentic, where we are telling true, genuine stories about our craft. In layman’s terms, what defines blended whisky when set against single malt. A single malt whisky is a product of a single distillery. It can be made from several barrels (or one!) originating from the same distillery. A blended whisky is a product that contains a mix of barrelaged malt and grain whiskies. For example, Royal Salute is blended whisky made of mature malt and grain whiskies aged for a minimum of 21 years. In saying that, we can source whiskies from several distilleries across Scotland, as long as they answer to our high standard. In a way, Scotland is our palate and the possibilities are endless. If done properly, a whisky blend can be a very interesting, unique and complex proposition. Royal Salute is the undisputed whisky brand for the major polo tournaments around the world. Why did British Polo Day’s global endeavours appeal as part of what was a tremendous success already? British Polo Day is different to other global polo events because they are 100% private, travel experiences. This way, we are able to curate artistically-led, unique experiences in some of the most beautiful destinations across the world that not only focus on the sport, but on the opulent lifestyle associated with polo as well. The destinations on offer are so exceptional, some of my personal favourites have been magical Morocco, the exclusive Will Rogers National Park in LA, the rich and tropical Singapore, the paradise that is Nihiwatu, vibrant Mexico and, last but not least, Jodhpur at the Maharaja’s Palace: the last of the great palaces of India and one of the largest residences in the world. Being in these wonderful places add to the experience and helps us connect with influential guests beyond just the polo match itself, making long-lasting and meaningful connections to our brand. Which countries or region represents the most exciting opportunity for Royal Salute when it comes to the growth of new whisky aficionados? The US will continue to be focus for Royal Salute. It is the biggest luxury and spirits market in the world – will remain as this for years to come. Therefore, we are interested in carving out opportunities

Of course, the Asian region – namely Korea, China, Vietnam, Taiwan - also exciting to us and are our key markets. We are already collaborating with them on artistic experiences we hope to reveal in the near future. Finally, Russia is interesting as well because of their appreciation and taste for spirits; it is fixed in their culture. We find more and more people are getting educated very quickly. They have a European sensibility and affinity, which whisky consumption – the epitomic luxury spirit drink – is embedded in this. What values to Royal Salute and British Polo Day share? Polo has long been regarded as the sport of kings, having appealed to monarchs throughout history. British Polo Day celebrates this great sport and the British heritage that is deep rooted within. As a high quality British whisky, we share that same heritage. Through British Polo Day we are able to transport the Royal Salute interpretation of Britishness across the world for guests to enjoy and embrace the shared values of both Royal Salute and British Polo Day. What separates Royal Salute from the competition? Royal Salute has a distinctive brand origin story. We were created as the epitome of whiskies by the gifted entrepreneur Sam Bronfman, which salutes royal values and high quality. We are proud to say we our youngest blend is 21 years of age and that our range only has precious blends where every drop of whisky is aged 21 years or older. Our blending philosophy is unique and we continue to push boundaries by injecting artistic and creative inspiration. Last but not least, Royal Salute is bottled in hand crafted porcelain flagons, which takes between five and six days to produce each porcelain bottle. Tough call but which Royal Salute experience stands out as being the most memorable? The most memorable Royal Salute experience for me was our signature event at Hampton Court Palace – “Perdurity: A Moving Banquet in Time” in collaboration with British artist, Marcos Lutyens. It took place on 2 June, marking the celebration of the coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth II and the birth of Royal Salute, which was created in 1953 to mark her coronation. “Perdurity” featured an intimate guided meditation laid suggestion led by Marcos through words, scents and textures designed to induce or heighten sensations. A spectacular banquet followed which showcased recipes from different eras in Royal history: the Stuarts, the Tudors, the Georgian and the Victorian. Sporadically time travelling between eras, the entire banquet transformed as the eras shifted, triggering responses laid carefully during Marcos’ meditation. Finally, a personalised dessert from the year 2034 paid tribute to the date Elizabeth II could become the longest reigning monarch of all time in world history. We at Royal Salute are always inspired by the work of high calibre artists, philosophers, writers and designers who are dedicated to understanding the transcendence of time and Perdurity was in fact part of our continued investigation into time.

All the King’s Horses They call polo The sporT of kings for a reason – it has always been played by royalty. From the moment the Persian royal family adopted the game to train the King’s Elite Cavalry, right down to our own princes, crowned heads have being riding chukkas harder than anyone. King Edward VIII was a keen player – during a tour of India in 1921 he introduced his friend, the future Earl Mountbatten of Burma, to the sport. The earl encouraged his nephew, the Duke of Edinburgh, to play and His Royal Highness co-founded the Household Brigade Polo Club. The Prince of Wales was given his first polo pony, San Quinina, at the age of 15 and first played in a team captained by his father in 1963. Both his sons, Princes William and Harry, are now keen players. Why have kings and princes always loved the sport? At Royal Salute we’d hazard a guess that it’s because the magical air surrounding monarchs finds an echo on the polo field, where man and beast – like sovereign and nation – bond to become something magnificent.

The centaur forward

The rider and the pony combine to make one player, argues Facundo Pieres. He’s the Lionel Messi of polo, a Royal Salute ambassador and supporter of the Latin America team today. “A great polo player knows the pony is 70% of the game and moves in harmony with the horse, turning and stopping with the slightest nudge of the leg or the arm,” he explains. “A bad polo player is always fighting the horse, wrenching it this way and that to get it to do their bidding.” Pieres carefully selects 10 horses for every game, changing ponies two or three times every chukka and choosing the best horses to match his opponent’s stable. “But I have four who I am perfectly in tune with, who give me confidence, who make me play better and who know my game as well as I do,” he grins, his face lighting up like a kid discussing Christmas. “I try to play these ponies at the end of every game. One, Magnifica, was the horse I was on when I scored the golden goal to win the Queen’s Cup – one of the proudest moments of my career. Could I have scored that goal on another horse? I’m not sure.”

Wild at heart

Fit for polo?

Borwick explains that all horses race in the wild – running in a herd to find out which is the fastest, strongest alpha male. Polo ponies require something more. Although a pony won’t take to the field in a competition until they’re seven, they start training before they’re two – experiencing to check and turn and run and stop. They play their first friendly game aged four, learning the pace and bustle of the field at a slower pace. “You can play a pony in a competition aged six or just over,” Borwick explains. “But it’s far better if you wait.” We couldn’t agree more.

Squat and turn: Put a pillow between your knees and stand 1ft away from the wall. Squat while squeezing the pillow, and rotate your trunk from side to side, touching the wall with both hands each time. Repeat eight times. Overhead side slams: Raise a medicine ball above your head. Rotate your trunk to your right and slam the ball to the floor. Squat, grab the ball, and repeat on the other side. Repeat five times. Lunge with twist: Stand with legs hip-width apart and hands behind your head. Step forwards into a lunge until the rear knee almost touches the floor. Rotate towards the lunging leg. Repeat on the other side for two sets of three lunges per side.

Training a polo pony takes time – and at Royal Salute, that’s something we understand. Our youngest bottle, after all, contains whiskies that are at least 21 years old. “You can rush a polo pony’s training, but you’ll get a horse that plays worse and has a shorter career,” explains Royal Salute ambassador and England’s prince of polo Malcolm Borwick, who’s backing England, of course.

Royal Salute delights in the dedication and craft of polo players. But we realise this is far from an overnight game. Players swing a 500g mallet with wild abandon, and require an iron core, rock-hard shoulders and sturdy back to avoid injury. Martin Perez at Fitness for Polo suggests the following pro-player exercises – which also promise washboard abs and a powerful stride…

1

The green player has the line, and at fair speed the white player would be crossing the line without a sufficient safety margin, resulting in a penalty against white.

3

When travelling in the same direction the white player may draw level with green player and then force him across the line and take possession of the ball without committing a dangerous foul.

5

Two players riding for a ball from opposite directions in the open must both give way to the left and take the ball on their right or offside.

2

Even at a far lesser angle the white player would still be crossing the line if he continues in that direction, and committing a dangerous foul.

4

The white player may move in parallel with the line and play a shot providing he can do so without interfering with the green player’s mount or causing him to check back. If white would cross the line to the dotted position it would be a foul.

6

When two players are approaching a ball in the open from different directions, the player (white), with the line of the ball on his offside, right hand side, has right of way.

BROMPTON BICYCLE POLO

BRI T I SH

EX I LES

This year at British Polo Day we are pleased to showcase Brompton bicycle polo. Brompton bicycle is the biggest bike manufacturer in the UK, with its factory in Kew, West London. Brompton’s history can be traced back to 1975, when the British inventor, Andrew Ritchie, created prototypes of Brompton bikes from his bedroom in South Kensington, London. The company remains in private hands and is now led by Will Butler-Adams OBE, though Andrew Ritchie continues to act as Technical Director. Today, Brompton bikes are sold in 44 export markets. Brompton bikes are most often seen flying around the cities but have proven to be great steeds in the game of bicycle polo in recent years. Their speed off the mark and technical build ensure a thrilling game of bicycle polo from the first chukka to the last! Bicycle polo was invented in County Wicklow, Ireland in 1891 by retired cyclist, Richard J. Mecredy. Two centuries on, bicycle polo is being played in over 17 countries worldwide and was officially recognised by the International Cycle Union (UCI) in 2001.

BROMPTON BICYCLE POLO

Cycle Polo was invented in County Wicklow, Ireland, in 1891 by retired cyclist, Richard J. Mecredy. That same year the first Cycle Polo match was played between The Scalp and the Ohne Hast C.C.. Towards the end of the 19th century the game reached Great Britain, France, and the United States where the American Star Bicycle was a popular mount. The first international match was played between Ireland and England in 1901. Cycle polo was a demonstration sport at the 1908 London Olympics with Ireland winning the gold, beating Germany. The sport reached its peak of popularity in Great Britain during the 1930s with the introduction of the regional leagues. Cycle Polo also flourished in France during this period with the establishment of the French league. Internationals between France and Great Britain were held regularly. However the Second World War marked the beginning of the demise of Cycle Polo in Britain. The sport managed to hang on in France though, with league championships held regularly still today.

BR ITISH AR MY

As history has shown, polo and the Army are intrinsically linked. The modern Army still actively promotes polo. The Army Polo Association (APOLOA) was founded in 1998 to co-ordinate and encourage polo in the Army, both at home and abroad. The APOLOA runs the InterRegimental which is the oldest Polo tournament in the World. This tournament focuses on the highest standard of military polo and looks to encourage all Regiments/Services to enter. Spread over 3 weeks and 3 rounds, the final is played at Guards Polo Club on The Queen’s Ground on a Sunday in June. Often quoted as the sport ‘played’ by kings, Hackett’s association with polo is well known and immortalised in the now iconic Hackett Polo Shirt. From humble beginnings of providing shirts for the Guard’s Polo Team, Hackett has made a welcome return to the polo field by becoming the sponsor of the British Army Polo Team.

PR ESIDENT’S BODYGUAR D

The President’s Bodyguard is an elite household cavalry regiment of the Indian Army. It is senior-most in the order of precedence of the units of the Indian Army. The primary role of the President’s Bodyguard is to escort and protect the President of India which is why the regiment is based in the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi, India. It is equipped as a mounted unit, with horses for ceremonies at the presidential palace and BTR-60 vehicles for use in combat. The personnel of the regiment are also trained as paratroopers and nominally are expected to lead in airborne assaults in the role of pathfinders. The President’s Bodyguard was raised by Governor Warren Hastings in Sep, 1773. Hastings handpicked 50 troopers from the ‘Moghal Horse’, which was raised in 1760 by local sirdars, Sirdars Mirza Shahbaz Khan & Sirdar Khan Tar Beg. In the same year, Raja Cheyt Singh of Benaras provided another 50 troopers that took the strength of the unit to 100. The first commander of the unit was Capt. Sweeny Toone, an officer of the Honourable East Indian Company (HEIC). 1. Rajat Rai Khatri

JODHPUR POLO TEAM

JODHPUR

In 1889, Sir Pratap Singh, younger brother of the then Maharaja and Prime Minister of Jodhpur State, invited Col. Stuart Beatson of the Bengal Lancers to help him raise the Jodhpur Lancers. It was with the Englishman that polo came to Jodhpur in its modern form. Only four years later, the Jodhpur Team brought home its first trophy, The Rajputana Challenge Cup of 1893. In 1897, when Sir Pratap traveled to London for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, he took his polo team along, the finest Indian team during those years. The Jodhpur team went from success to success and in February 1922, Jodhpur beat Patiala in Delhi to become champions of all India. It was a match often described as the finest ever. A crowd of over a hundred and fifty thousand people, which included the future King-Emperor, the Viceroy, Sir Pratap himself, and fifty Maharajas watched spellbound. Crushed by defeat, the magnificent Bhupinder Singh, Maharaja of Patiala, let his horses loose in the crowded by-lanes of the capital and ordered his team to burn their sticks. They never entered the field again‌ 1. Bhanwar Kartikeya Singh

Eton is intrinsically linked with both polo and India. Eleven viceroys of British India were educated there (including Lords Dufferin, Curzon and Linlithgow), as well as five Governor-Generals and three High Commissioners after independence. The first Etonian linked with the subcontinent seems to have been the seventeenth-century diarist John Evelyn. Later, another Etonian founded R. Thomas and Co, a firm involved in the indigo and jute businesses in Calcutta. As well as His Highness The Maharaja Gaj Singh II Of Marwar-Jodhpur, who attended the school in the 1960s, Maharajah Duleep Singh’s two sons (Princes Victor and Frederick) were at Eton in the 1870s, and many more Indians since. Lord Curzon, when Viceroy, initiated the first “Fourth of June” dinner for Old Etonians, a tradition revived by Roddy Sale for the many Old Etonians living in India in the present day. On the polo field, Princes William and Harry are perhaps the most well known but Eton has produced many fine players, including Luke Tomlinson, Captain of the England Polo Team and a 7 goal player. 1. MAYO COLLEGE

MAYO

Mayo College was founded by the 6th Earl of Mayo, who was Viceroy of India from 1869 to 1872. The founder’s intention was to create an Eton of India and it has fulfilled those ambitions creating one of the most exclusive private boarding schools in India. The 1st Earl of Lytton, Viceroy of India, said in a speech on campus in 1879: “What was most needed for the education of India’s young rulers and nobles was an Indian Eton. Ajmer is India’s Eton and you are India’s Eton boys.” To this day the Rajasthan school maintains an exchange programme under which Mayo pupils study at Eton and Etonians spend gap-year time teaching at Mayo. The famous Mayo Coat of Arms was composed from the design furnished by Mr. Lockwood Kipling, a former Principal of the School of Arts, Lahore and father of the famous Rudyard Kipling. Mayo College has always produced strong polo players, including Lokendra Singh Ghanerao, Captain of the Indian Polo Team at the World Cup and Apji Vijai Singh who represented India in Polo tournaments in Australia, Brunei, Nigeria and USA. equine community. 1. Equally, he takes pleasure in travelling and fine watchmaking, two passions that his role at JaegerLeCoultre enables him to combine.
