WELCOME NOTE Dear Guests, Welcome to The Thai Polo and Equestrian Club for the first British Polo Day Thailand, sponsored by Coutts. This event celebrates the heritage and history of the game of polo and the strong links between Britain and Thailand which goes back centuries. In 1890, His Royal Highness Krom Luang Devawongse Varopakarn, the Thai minister of foreign affairs, officially accepted the proposal of an Englishman, Franklin Hurst, to set up a racetrack and sports field in Bangkok. There exists evidence that polo was played at the Pramane Grounds (Sanam Luang) before the 1920s and in 1924, the Bangkok Riding Club leased land from the Crown Property Bureau just off Wireless Road. This became the Bangkok Riding and Polo Club, where various equestrian sports (including polo) were played three times a week. We are delighted to be continuing a long-held tradition of teams from the British Army and Oxford University travelling the world to play polo. We are honoured to have been invited to stage a British Polo Day at the Thai Polo and Equestrian Club, the jewel in Thailand’s polo crown. HRH Prince Amir of Pahang will lead out the Oxford Polo Team, joined by Jacqui Hooper, former Oxford Polo Captain, The Hon. Jamie Dundas and Stuart Wrigley. The British Army will be lead out by Captain Jack Mann, playing alongside Captain Philip Kaye, Colonel Justin Stanhope-White, Chairman of the Hurlingham Polo Association Coaching Committee and Gaston Devrient, the British Army polo coach. We are of course indebted to all of our sponsors and we are delighted to have the privilege of sharing with them today this wonderful place for the inaugural British Polo Day Thailand. Our gratitude and special thanks is reserved for Mr Harald link and Nunthinee Tanner who have provided the most incredible support, encouragement and enthusiasm for our concept and this event. We feel very lucky to have such inspiring partners and it is an honour to be here at The Thai Polo and Equestrian Club. We hope you have a great day! The Committee of British Polo Day Thailand

We are delighted to be sponsoring British Polo Day in Thailand. The qualities of speed, strength and teamwork associated with the world’s oldest team sport are attributes we share at Coutts, one of the world’s oldest private banks. Founded in the UK in 1692, Coutts was one of the early pioneers of private banking. Scottish goldsmith John Campbell moved from Scotland to London and established his goldsmithbanker’s shop at the ‘sign of the three crowns’ in the Strand, within sight of Coutts’ present head office. Over the bank’s 320-year history, Coutts has managed the financial affairs of distinguished individuals like Charles Dickens and Frederic Chopin. Today, Coutts is a dynamic private bank, carrying on a tradition of offering a very personal service at the heart of its investment activities; with wealth management, preservation and growth at the top of the list. We hope you have a great time at the British Polo Day. May the best team win!

Description of a Polo Game The object of the game is to move the polo ball down-field, hitting the ball through the goal posts for a score. Polo teams then change direction after each goal in order to compensate for field and wind conditions. A team is made up of four polo players. A polo match is usually played outdoors. A polo field is 300 yards long and 160 yards wide, the largest field in organized sport. A polo match lasts about one and one-half hours and is divided into timed periods called chukkers. Each chukker is seven minutes long. Play begins with a throw-in of the ball by the umpire at the opening of each chukker and after each goal. Players must change horses after each chukker due to the extreme demands placed on the polo pony. During half time, spectators go onto the field to participate in a tradition called "divot stomping" to help replace the divots created by the horse's hooves.

Rules of Polo 1

The orange player has the line, and at fair speed the white player would be crossing the line without sufficient safety margin, resulting in a penalty against white.

3

When travelling in the same direction the white player may draw level with orange and then force him across the line and take possession of the ball without committing a dangerous foul.

5

Two players riding for a ball from opposite directions in the open must both give way to the left and take the ball on their right or offside.

15

2

Even at a far lesser angle the white player would still be crossing the line if he continues in that direction, and committing a dangerous foul.

4

The white player may move in parallel with the line and play a shot providing he can do so without interfering with the orange’s mount or causing him to check back. If white would cross the line to the dotted position it would be a foul.

6

When two players are approaching a ball in the open from different directions, the player (white), with the line of the ball on his offside, right hand side, has right of way.

Dear Friends BRITISH POLO DAY

2012 is a great year for Britain. Rarely have circumstances so fortuitously coincided for a nation’s identity and impact on the international stage. Last year’s Royal Wedding was a curtain raiser, the main act is the Diamond Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth and the London Olympics is our grand finale! It is a tremendous privilege to be a British Ambassador in 2012. We know of Incredible India, Malaysia is 'Truly Asia' and, of course, Amazing Thailand. For over 300 years, the UK has enjoyed the enduring brand of being “Great Britain”. British Polo Day captures the essence of the qualities of Great Britain. This is an opportunity for our friends to celebrate the best of British in an international context, build bridges and share experiences. The links between Thailand and the UK are very solid. Thailand, as I know from my experience both in Government and the private sector, is home to a number of British businesses and commerce between our two countries is significant and growing. The British Embassy is committed to helping British companies to succeed in Thailand and South East Asia as a whole and to smooth the path for Thai investors who have chosen Britain as their gateway to Europe. British education has a well deserved reputation for excellence amongst Thais. Those who have attended our schools and universities are not only equipped with a world view, but they are also great ambassadors for Britain. I am delighted to welcome the first British Polo Day to Thailand. I would like to thank all of our Thai and British friends who have made this event possible. I hope that each of you make new contacts, strengthen existing bonds and refresh relations that have prospered in the rich history and heritage of Thailand and the United Kingdom.

Asif Ahmad HM Ambassador

Although the ancient sport of polo began in Persia and China many centuries ago, the British reinvented the modern game in the nineteenth century. Sir Winston Churchill, one of the greatest proponents of the game, once famously said “a polo handicap is a passport to the world and polo is still thriving everywhere it is played, from Argentina to New Zealand. British Polo Day carries on the tradition of the British playing polo against friends in a host of different countries around the world.

THE Thai POLO & Equestrian CLUB Thailand has always carried a romantic allure, and is now becoming known to the travelling elite for its superb polo clubs as the climate results in the most exceptional pitches. Polo was first played in Thailand by English sportsmen from Penang as a royal command performance before King Rama VII of the Chakri dynasty. Later, the first polo club under royal patronage was established, and today, Royal patronage is still enjoyed by The Thai Polo and Equestrian Club. Situated at the beach resort of Pattaya, 150 kms to the East on the Gulf of Thailand and sixty to ninety minutes drive from the Bangkok International Airport, the Thai Polo & Equestrian Club has two international-standard, full-sized fields, a practice ground, stabling for over 220 horses, paddocks and approximately 80 horses for the use of members. Mr Harald Link and Mrs. Nunthinee Tanner decided to establish the club in the late 1990’s as a polo venue for friends and family. Since then the Club has flourished providing a beautiful surrounding for a beautiful game.

Oxford The Oxford Polo Team playing at British Polo Day Thailand epitomizes the global reach of the university and polo itself with the players having learned the sport in the UK, UAE, Malaysia and Australia. The Oxford University Polo Club was founded in 1874, three years after the introduction of polo to Britain, by undergraduates from Christ Church and Brasenose Colleges, led by Mr. Walter Long (later Viscount Long of Wraxall and First Lord of the Admiralty). The first match was held on the 1st of July 1877, and was contested by its two founder Colleges amid considerable pomp and ceremony. The great success of that day encouraged the players to establish a Varsity match with the Cambridge University Polo Club. This Varsity match is the oldest polo fixture in the western world and was first played at the Bullingdon Cricket Ground in Oxford on the 27th of November 1878. It’s the oldest continuing polo fixture in the western world. During the late sixties and early seventies, polo at Oxford enjoyed a purple patch, winning the annual match eight times in a row. Many of the players from this period are now well-known figures in the polo world. General Sir Redmond Watt played off a two-goal handicap while at university and subsequently became the highest rated Old Blue after the war when he peaked at five-goals.

Thai POLO CLUB 2 The strength of Fabian Bolanteiro will be matched by the youth of Everest Munro and Princess Anna working hard to support the drive of Gary Tiernan who will no doubt be marshaling this combination team. The South China Sea connection of William Zhao one of the Hong Kong patrons and Goncalo Cabral of Macau will make this team a most intriguing prospect. Will all of these ingredients combine to make a truly potent force or will their differences trump their competitive spirit and capacity to win? This team is truly a testament to our sport and it’s capacity to bridge cultural divides through the shared love of the game. I am sure those nonaligned will be cheering on this wonderful team brought together and unified today in the white and orange of The Thai Polo and Equestrian Club

THE BRITISH ARMY The British Army is intrinsically linked with the spread of the modern game of polo. Captain Robert Stewart and Major General Joe Sherer witnessed a polo match while stationed in Manipur, and in 1859 held the inaugural meeting of the first polo club, the Silchar Polo Club.In 1869, Edward “Chicken” Hartopp, of the 10th Hussars, read an account of the game in The Field magazine while stationed at Aldershot and, with fellow officers, organised the first game. Then known as “hockey on horseback,” it was played on a hastily-rolled Hounslow Heath where a shortlist of about 10 rules was also hastily assembled. But, it was John Watson (1856-1908), of the 13th Hussars, who formulated the first real rules of the game in India in the 1870s. The first polo club in England was Monmouthshire, founded in 1872 by Captain Francis “Tip” Herbert (1845- 1922), of the 7th Lancers, at his brother’s estate at Clytha Park, near Abergavenny. Others, including Hurlingham, followed quickly. The Army Polo Association (APOLOA) was founded in 1998 to co-ordinate and encourages polo in the Army, both at home and abroad with its mission ‘to encourage, support and organise polo throughout the Army at all levels in order to widen its membership and increase the opportunity to play the game.’

Thai POLO CLUB 1 The Thai Polo Team is led by it’s patron Harald Link. He has played polo all over the world including 15 -18 Goals tournaments. This year he played the British Open for the first time. His daughter Caroline is equally enthused by the little white ball. Born in Bangkok, she started learning and playing polo on her fathers horses She loves playing polo for good causes and her goal is to be a good 1 goal player. Manuel Cereceda born in La Plata Argentina started playing polo when he was 18 years old. He has played all over the world but has still called The Thai Polo Club his polo home since 2007. Andrew Hine played professional polo for over 20 years, in 17 countries. He captained England from 1999 to 2003 and now manages The England Team. Claudia Zeisberger, a Professor at INSEAD, is the most learned member of this team. She approaches the schooling of her 11 polo ponies with the same intensity that she demands of her MBA students. Prince Carl is recently arrived from the subcontinent where his globe-trotting polo fixtures saw him playing in Jodhpur. The Patron of British Polo Day Germany will be looking to establish a commanding impression on The British Army Team before he faces them again in July. This is a team where German may well be the lingua franca but once again the global platform of polo will be celebrated at The Thai Polo Club by this incredible collection of international polo personalities.

History of the Game Polo is perhaps the oldest game in the world – having been played over 2500 years ago - and is truly international. The name polo is said to have been derived from the Tibetan word “pulu”, meaning ball.

Ancient Polo In 600 BC the first recorded game of polo took place between the Turkomans and Persians. The Turkomans won. Polo began as a training game for cavalry units, usually the king’s guard or other elite troops. To the warlike tribesmen, who played it with as many as 100 to a side, it was a miniature battle. Persian literature and art give us the richest accounts of polo in antiquity. Ferdowsi, the famed poet-historian, gives a number of accounts of royal polo tournaments in his 9th century epic, Shahnameh (the Epic of Kings). In the earliest account, Ferdowsi romanticizes an international match between Turanian force and the followers of Siyâvash, a legendary prince from the earliest centuries of the Empire. The game spread into North India. In fact Sultan Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the first Muslim Emperor of North India, actually died accidentally in 1210 playing polo.

From Persia, in medieval times polo spread to the Byzantines (who called it tzykanion), and after the Muslim conquests to the Ayyubid and Mameluke dynasties of Egypt and the Levant, whose elites favored it above all other sports. Notable sultans such as Saladin and Baybars were known to play it and encourage it in their court. Polo sticks were features on the Mameluke precursor to modern day playing cards. Polo was passed from Persia to other parts of Asia including the Indian subcontinent and China, where it was very popular during the Tang Dynasty and frequently depicted in paintings and statues. The Moguls were largely responsible for taking the game from Persia to the east and by the 16th century the Emperor Babur had established it in India. Polo was revived in Japan by the 8th Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune (1684-1751) and was played until early 20th century. It was the favourite sport of the last Shogun who surrendered power to the Emperor in 1868.

Modern Polo The modern game of polo, though formalized and popularized by the British, is derived from Manipur (now a state in India) when British tea planters discovered the game in Manipur (Munipoor) on the Burmese border with India and established the first polo club in the world at Silchar, west of Manipur in 1862. In 1869, Edward “Chicken” Hartopp, 10th Hussars, read an account of the game in The Field, while stationed at Aldershot, and, with brother officers, organised the first game known then as “hockey on horseback”- on a hastily-rolled Hounslow Heath against The 9th Lancers. The 1st Life Guards and the Royal Horse Guards were quick to follow suit on grounds at Hounslow and in Richmond Park; and then on a small ground near Earl’s Court known as Lillie Bridge. The first polo club in England was Monmouthshire, founded by Capt. Francis “Tip” Herbert, 7th

Lancers, at his brother’s seat, Clytha Park, near Abergavenny in 1872. In 1875, the first official match in Argentina took place on 3rd September, where the game had been taken by English and Irish engineers and ranchers.

THE ASSAM COMPANY LTD THE FIRST COMPANY IN THE WORLD OF POLO 1861 During the reign of Maharaja Chandrakirti (1850-1886) British Tea Planters based in Assam saw and learnt the game from Manipur Players. The Game of Polo evolved with The Establishment of The Silchar Club at Cachar in 1859. In 1861 Assam Company was the first Company Team to play polo.

British Polo Day celebrates the traditions and heritage of polo and so it is a great honour for us to be working with the Assam Company Ltd.
