March 21, 2016 Dear Friends: On behalf of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center, welcome back to the beautiful Al Hirschfeld Theatre for another incredible edition of Broadway Backwards. Every year, Broadway Backwards provides a unique snapshot of life for the LGBT community and our allies. Through these beloved songs from the musical theatre canon, we see our struggles, hopes and successes reflected back to us by some of Broadway’s most talented performers. Broadway Backwards brings together our two organizations to collaborate and share resources to make a difference for our friends and neighbors right here in New York and around the country. Whether through services for people with HIV/AIDS or providing an outlet and community for vulnerable LGBT youth and those recovering from addiction, BC/EFA and The Center ensure that essential, life-affirming and lifesaving services are available for hundreds of thousands LGBT individuals and their families throughout the year. Building and empowering a strong community has been the primary goal of The Center for more than 30 years. Whether it be through our first-of-its-kind youth substance use treatment program, our 275-mile Cycle for the Cause bike ride to raise funds for our HIV and AIDS programs or our recent collaboration with the Google Cultural Institute to bring our art collection and rich history to the world, The Center strives to bring together the diverse LGBT population of New York City. At Broadway Cares, we awarded $12 million in grants last year, funding health clinics, housing initiatives, emergency financial assistance programs and our longtime partner, The Actors Fund. Already this year, in our first round of grants, we distributed a record-breaking $1.85 million to community food pantries, congregate meal and meal delivery programs in 35 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico - including 16 right here in New York City. We are able to funnel this support swiftly and efficiently to vital neighborhood programs thanks to the dedication of the talented men and women onstage and working behind the scenes tonight, as well as the generosity of everyone attending this evening. Now, sit back and enjoy some of the great songs of musical theatre as they come to life in unexpected and thrilling ways. We are glad you are here with us, both tonight in this audience and as a member of our community. Thank you for joining us and for your generous support. Sincerely,

Glennda Testone Executive Director The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center

Tom Viola Executive Director Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS

March 21, 2016 Dear friends, As you sit back and take in Broadway Backwards tonight, I want you to think about one word … forward. Yes, that’s right. To quote Alanis Morissette, “Isn’t it ironic?” Since we first presented Broadway Backwards 11 years ago, our community has grown, changed and made great strides - from anti-bullying efforts to marriage equality, from being more “out” and united on social media to gaining more visibility in film, television, theatre and music. But it seems – especially in this election season – that many potential leaders of our nation want to steal the “Backwards” from our show title and send us in that direction, taking away essential civil and human rights. This kind of backtracking will deeply affect us in ways that are frightening to imagine. Think of our friends, families and co-workers wrestling for years to get access to basic, lifesaving HIV/AIDS medicines. Or of yet another generation of LGBT youth being told they are less than equal. Our community’s suicide rate is still much higher than that of the non-LGBT community. I cannot even fathom what will happen if our so-called leaders try to strip us of more rights and claim that it’s OK to condemn our community. So it’s up to us to prevent that from happening. Thank you for taking a stand tonight by joining members of the Broadway community to lend your support to these two important organizations: Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center. Day in and day out, they are on the frontlines funding and providing desperately needed assistance. By joining us this evening, you are helping a woman in Tulsa who desperately needs HIV meds and receives assistance from one of more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations supported by Broadway Cares. You are helping a teen from Alabama who runs away to find acceptance and safety in more friendly surroundings. You are helping those right here in NYC, deserted by their families, who are seeking a safe haven at the Center and blossom in their newfound community. This is why we are here. So as a community of LGBT people, our friends, families and allies, as you watch these talented and generous performers open their hearts… please remember to leave backwards on the stage and put forward in your hearts and minds. Together we can continue to move in that wonderful direction. Sincerely,

Robert Bartley Director
