Dear friends, On behalf of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center, we are thrilled to welcome you back - finally - for another edition of Broadway Backwards. It’s been a long time since we gathered for this heartwarming event. Much has changed since we were last gathered here, yet sadly so much has not. LGBTQ+ people still face bigotry and adversity across the country. Our rights remain in jeopardy and face new challenges. Yet this night is an opportunity to embrace what we believe in; showing there can be a better tomorrow when we speak out and make our voices heard. When the world is disheartening, the theater is a space for people of all backgrounds and beliefs to belong and have a voice. By being a part of our Broadway Backwards family, you’re making a real, tangible difference in the lives of the LGBTQ+ community and those among us facing challenges and crises. Broadway Backwards brings together our two organizations to create a safer, more inclusive and more dignified world. Whether through services for people living with HIV/AIDS or providing resources for queer youth and those recovering from addiction, Broadway Cares and The LGBT Community Center ensure that essential, life-affirming and lifesaving services are available for hundreds of thousands of LGBTQ+ individuals and their families year-round. At Broadway Cares, your support provided for $15 million in grants last year to health clinics, food service organizations, emergency financial assistance programs and housing initiatives in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Because of your donations, Broadway Cares continues to be the single largest supporter of the vital social service programs of the Entertainment Community Fund (formerly The Actors Fund), which provides those in entertainment with a safety net in times of need. Building and empowering a strong community while advocating for justice and opportunity has been at the core of The Center’s work for more than 30 years. From our economic justice programming for young adults, to our substance use treatment and mental health counseling services, to our 275-mile Cycle for the Cause bike ride that raises funds for our HIV and AIDS services, and beyond, The Center exists to help the diverse LGBTQ+ population of New York not only survive, but thrive. By being here tonight, you’re creating space for queer stories in the theater while making sure those voices have impact outside of the theater walls. In the continually tumultuous and dangerous political climate we still find ourselves in, we join in not only saying gay, but singing it loudly and proudly for all to hear. Sincerely,
Tom Viola Glennda Testone Executive Director Executive Director Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center
Dear friends, Welcome back to Broadway, my friends, and to Broadway Backwards! The last two years have taught me a lot, but especially that human connection is essential - kindness, compassion, hugging, looking in each others’ eyes and listening. Also, I will never take for granted being in a Broadway theater again and having the opportunity to create with and watch great artists. Considering all we’ve been through and the constant barrage of negativity, cynicism and bad news in the media, I thank you for taking a night away from all of that to be optimistic about what we can do together. Thank you for choosing love and hope. I don’t think of hope as an empty word that gives us a free pass to sit back and do nothing. To me, choosing hope means we mustn’t be complacent. It charges us to believe there can be a better tomorrow and stand up for our ideals and principals. It charges us to speak out and make our voices heard. Tonight is one of those nights. Tonight you will hear dozens of wonderful theater artists finding their voices and standing with our community. Thank you for joining us for Broadway Backwards and standing with two organizations I cherish and respect, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center. By the nature of what each organization represents and how our communities engage with them, both provide a framework and countless opportunities where we can make a difference and, one by one, change lives. Always speak out and, for goodness sake, always sing loudly, proudly and from the heart.
With love,
Robert Bartley Director
