March 24, 2014 Dear Friends: On behalf of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center, welcome to the Al Hirschfeld Theatre and the ninth edition of Broadway Backwards. Tonight offers us an opportunity to celebrate those accomplishments and share a very unique sense of community as we watch and listen to our favorite Broadway performers singing songs for us and about us. Since we last gathered together for this beautiful once-a-year event, we’ve experienced two historic US Supreme Court decisions in favor of marriage equality. As we mark each stride forward and embrace accomplishments that many of us never imagined we’d see in our lifetimes, we must remember that there are still countless members of our community who struggle every day. Both Broadway Cares and The Center work on a daily basis to ensure that those who face such challenges are able to find a connection in times of struggle – a helping hand, a strong shoulder, a loud voice. Whether through services for people with HIV/AIDS or providing an outlet and community for vulnerable LGBT youth and those recovering from addiction, BC/EFA and The Center ensure that essential, life-affirming and lifesaving services are available for hundreds of thousands LGBT individuals and their families throughout the year. Broadway Backwards brings together our two organizations to collaborate and share resources to make a difference for our friends and neighbors right here in New York and so many more around the country. Together, we can accomplish great things. Tonight, sit back and enjoy some of the great songs of musical theatre as they come alive in new ways and take on new meaning. We hope you see yourself in some of these songs and moments, perhaps a little differently than you have before. We also hope that the celebration we share tonight helps shine a brighter light for those who continue to live in the shadows. Thank you for joining us and for your generous support. Sincerely,

Dear friends, Welcome to the ninth edition of Broadway Backwards. What an honor it is to once again collaborate with so many wildly talented and generous theatre professionals, as well as the expert and tireless staff of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. We come together not only to enjoy this special night in a Broadway theatre, but to raise money for two causes I’ve been passionate about for some time. Thank you for sharing that passion and joining me in supporting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center. But while we celebrate, we also are reminded of those who are less fortunate and still struggle. It’s hard to turn on the television, go online or check Facebook without seeing the travesties in Russia inflicted on LGBT people simply for being gay, or the anti-LGBT laws and hate crimes in Uganda that seem to be feverishly spreading throughout Africa. Here at home, I’m astonished by proposals to legalize discrimination in Arizona and Kansas. All help remind me why we do an event like Broadway Backwards and support these two causes. There are so many who still live on the fringe of society, feeling cast off and without someone to turn to. This isn’t simply about LGBT equality or discrimination. My friends, there is a quiet crisis bubbling in the LGBT community that seems to have become passé to talk about. I’m certainly not seeing much about it on Facebook or in the mainstream media. It’s called AIDS. I recently read that infection rates are as high right now as they were at the height of the crisis in the ‘80s and early ‘90s. And there is a misperception that if you “get it,” you take a pill and all will be fine. It’s not that simple. The meds are complicated and cause side effects that are not easy. Most importantly, a significant number of people who need to be taking lifesaving antiviral medications aren’t. Even those who are, often live in fear that their closest friends and family will find out. Thus the crisis continues. A quiet crisis. Marriage equality is important. I demand and expect it. But in between all the appropriate celebrations, let’s recommit to help those affected by HIV/AIDS and so many other life-threatening illnesses, challenges and issues. They need support, counseling, access to medications and health care, nutritious meals, family planning and so much more. That’s just a part of what the two extraordinary organizations we’re supporting tonight make available right here in New York and across the country. Let’s definitely celebrate tonight. Celebrate our community and these extraordinary performers who are reinterpreting some of our favorite Broadway songs with a twist just for us. Then, when we go home tonight, know that you’ve been a part of something bigger and please, please continue to stay involved. I promise to. I hope you will. With love and thanks,
Robert Bartley Writer, Director & Choreographer
